Global Paradigm School Staff Participate in Sensory Strategies to Enhance Classroom Learning Workshop

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Global Paradigm School and presenting a workshop for the elementary staff. The focus was about sensory processing, identifying red flags of children with sensory processing dysfunction, and strategies for the classroom.

It is important for educators to know that everyone has sensory preferences. As adults, we all seek out different sensory stimuli to make us "feel alright." Some of us chew gum, drink coffee or doodle on paper during meetings and while on the phone. Some of us eat crunchy snacks to make us more alert when staying up late. Some of us prefer tight clothes to make us feel more comfortable and some of us are bothered by the tags in our shirts and pants. Some of us cannot stand noisy environments, like the shopping centers on a Thursday and Friday night and some of us do not mind.

Children are no different.

Some children have sensory preferences and can function alright throughout the day. However, some children have dysfunction in how they process sensory information and need assistance to "feel alright."

The teachers were instructed on the importance of classroom strategies, such as proper seating posture, using carpet squares for circle time boundaries, using quiet areas, using fidget toys to focus and movement breaks.

Children need to MOVE! Many studies show that children learn better when provided movement during an educational task. Movement can be integrated into such topics as spelling by clapping hands or stomping feet for each syllable. Movement can be incorporated into math by jumping rope and completing mental math at the same time. There are endless ways to adapt a lesson.

First American Curriculum Preschool Opens in Tanta, Egypt

I was recently invited to speak about occupational therapy and child development at the opening of Capital Schools in Tanta, Egypt. I spoke about pediatric OT in regards to our educational background, evaluation and treatment services and how we can support a child's sensory motor skill development within the school system. I also spoke about the importance of the preschool years being the foundation to build a child's language skills, pre-reading skills, pre-writing skills, social skills, sensory and motor skill development etc. Parenting tips were provided on how to support their children through the educational years.

Although the area has "nurseries", Capital Schools will be the first in the Delta region to have a preschool following an American curriculum. The preschool is opening this academic year and then the elementary and high school will follow in the next stage of development.

I was actually very surprised that Tanta did not have preschools. So, this was a very nice opportunity for me to visit and learn more about a city outside of Cairo!

Parent Lecture on the Importance of Play and Routine for Children.

I recently had the pleasure of presenting at Windrose Academy. The audience were parents and the topic was the Importance of Play and Routine for Children. Windrose Academy supports parent education by providing frequent workshops on various educational and parenting topics. Parents were very welcoming and presented many relevant questions regarding the topics.

In regards to play and routine, play helps children learn about the world in which they live. They can investigate and discover, test their theories, test spatial relationships, explore cause and effect, learn problem solving skills, build their motor skills, build self esteem, build social skills and family values. That is the importance of play, that there's virtually no area of life in which it cannot teach your child something.

“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” – Fred Rogers

We often do not think so, but children crave routine! Routine has many benefits for children, such as influencing a child’s emotional, cognitive, and social development, helping children feel secure and comfortable, helping children understand the expectations of the environment, helping to reduce the frequency of behavior problems (e.g., tantrums) and influencing child engagement in activities.

Parent Tips:

Observe your child play and learn about their skills and interests.
Follow your child's lead when he plays. If he is building a city, build a building alongside of his.
Limit toys that provide too many electronic features. The less a toy can do the more fun a child has using her imagination.
Be consistent.
Use visual schedules for young children.

Professional Training Day at The British Columbia Canadian International School (BCCIS) in Egypt

The British Columbia Canadian International School (BCCIS) in Egypt recently hosted a professional training day for their teachers at their school in El Sherouk City. Teachers and teaching assistants from the ECE and Elementary School Departments attended two workshops; Sensory Strategies to Enhance Classroom Learning and Frequently Asked Questions about Handwriting, which I presented.

Staff actively participated in numerous discussions about student's handwriting difficulties and learned strategies to support good sitting posture, pencil grip, letter formation, spacing, organizational skills and more. Staff learned about sensory processing and how student's ability to process sensory information affects their daily function. Staff also learned about sensory signals, sensory diets and how to create a sensory friendly classroom environment. Practical strategies to implement in the classroom were discussed and demonstrated.

Staff participated in "Brain Breaks", such as performing these yoga poses and learned how to incorporate movement throughout the daily classroom routine. Movement is widely known to enhance children's learning. Using movement breaks throughout the day keeps students and teachers focused!

Staff learned handwriting strategies, such as "back writing" and the importance of using simple, age appropriate language to teach handwriting.

Staff participated in "Would You Rather..." activities, showing how you can incorporate movement in an activity that was originally done in a seated position using discussion and/or pencil and paper.

Since children spend on average 6 hours a day in a classroom setting and write in every subject it is important for teachers to be aware of good handwriting practice and sensory strategies to help children function at their most optimal level.

It is good to know that schools like BCCIS are willing to support children with various educational needs. From my experience presenting to teachers at various schools, I find that many teachers are often willing to support children with various needs in their classroom, but they often just need the practical strategies to do so.

Occupational Therapy Awareness Day in Egypt

In honor of World Occupational Therapy Awareness Day 2014, I presented two complimentary workshops at the Learning Resource Center:

(1) What is Pediatric Occupational Therapy (OT)?

(2) Occupational Therapy Tips for Parents and Educators: Supporting Child Development

We discussed the importance of using fun activities to enhance participation in writing tasks, the importance of routines for children, the importance of participating in household tasks, how to develop sensory motor skills through self help tasks, how to develop a sensory room at home and school and more.

We had a great turnout of parents, teachers, administrators, physical therapist's and people interested in learning more about occupational therapy as a career.

SESSION 1: What is Pediatric Occupational Therapy (OT)? (45 minutes)

This is an introductory session providing caregivers recommended tips for supporting

The Learning Resource Center (LRC) was chartered September 1996, and since then, has been providing diagnostic and consultative services for children of all ages who have a broad range of learning difficulties, developmental disorders and/or behavior problems. A range of specialists provide services at the LRC including psychologists, behavior therapists, speech and language pathologists, occupational and physical therapists, educational specialists, and consulting physicians. We provide assessments, consultations, specialized therapies, and in-service training for schools and/or parents. We also provide support to families in accepting and dealing with their child's difficulties.

Occupational Therapist Position: OT’s responsibilities are evaluating and treating clients, as well as collaborating with other professionals in order to provide an effective program. This includes documenting, working with developmental specialist staff, attending staff meetings, providing and attending in-service training, participating in professional development, mentorship of junior clinicians and other duties as assigned by supervisors. in Cairo, Egypt. The school will follow an American curriculum and offer an American diploma. OT needs

years old and children have a wide range of diagnosis, such as Autism, CP, Down syndrome, Sensory

Minimum requirements include:

WORLD OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY DAY

Hello,

It has been a while since I have posted to the blog. I have been mainly consulting and presenting workshops when in Cairo. There is not as much growth in the OT profession in Egypt as I had hoped for years ago. However, I still enjoy presenting workshops about OT and other related topics!

In honor of World Occupational Therapy Day last month, I am presenting two complimentary workshops:

1). What is Pediatric Occupational Therapy?
2). Tips for Choosing Toys for Infants, Toddlers and Preschoolers

at The Learning Resource Center on Saturday, 9th of November 2013 from 12.00 pm to 3.00 pm. The LRC is located at 9 Road 278, Maadi (near the Maadi Public Library).

Session 1: What is Pediatric Occupational Therapy? (45 minutes, from 12.00 pm to 12.45 pm)

This introductory session will explain what pediatric occupational therapy is. Participants will learn about an OT's educational background, who would benefit from OT and what is included in an OT assessment and treatment.

Session 2: Tips for Choosing Toys for Infants, Toddlers and Preschoolers (90 minutes, from 1.30 pm to 3.00 pm)

This introductory workshop will provide tips on how to select appropriate toys for children aged 0-5 years old. Participants will also learn general developmental milestones for these ages. If participants have specific toys that they would like to learn more ways to use with a child, they are welcome to bring them to the workshop.

- Educate client and family to facilitate skills in areas of occupation as well as health

maintenance and safety.

- Monitor and reassess the effects of occupational therapy intervention and the need to

continue, modify, or discontinue intervention.

- Prioritize and schedules work tasks independently.

- Manage inventory of therapeutic equipment and assessments, and project needs for

budget planning.

- Maintain clinical and administrative records in accordance with professional standards.

- Review occupational therapy services for quality improvement and make changes as

needed to ensure quality of services.

- Ability to determine the need for an occupational therapy evaluation and to select and

administer appropriate assessment tools to evaluate the client.

- Ability to interpret the evaluation data and write a comprehensive report that reflect

strengths and barriers to client’s participation and occupational performance.

- Ability to participate collaboratively with multi-disciplinary to develop Individualized

Education Programs to meet client needs.

- Ability to develop occupationally based intervention plans based on evaluation

information.

I Worked in India for 2 ½ years as an Occupational Therapy Advisor with SANKALP, a Non- Governmental Organization in the state of Uttar Pradesh under the auspices of Voluntary Services Overseas [VSO].

Have also worked in Kenya for 3 years with Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya [APDK] – Nairobi as an Occupational Therapist in the Community Based Rehabilitation Programme.

My career path as an Occupational Therapist [OT] has been rehabilitation of physically disabled people; children with developmental disorders, as well as people with psychosocial dysfunction in Hospitals, community based rehabilitation [CBR] and in school based.

My career objective is to use my knowledge, abilities and experience to manage and prevent disability, promote independent living for people with special needs in the society. Tombola at the ADVANCE & LRC 12th Annual Educational Conference Inclusive Education: "Ways and Means"

Once again, it is that time of year that the ADVANCE Society for Children with Special Needs and the Learning Resource Center (LRC) are organizing the annual educational conference in Cairo.

This year, the topic is Inclusive Education and the title of the conference is "Ways and Means." The conference will be held Friday-Saturday, May 4-5 at the Misr American College in New Maadi, Cairo.

A few years ago, I organized a tombola with toys from various international companies: http://otegypt.blogspot.com/2010/02/purchase-raffle-tickets-to-raise-money.html

This year, I am organizing a tombola with mostly Egyptian and a few regional companies donating toys, books, dvd's/cd's, arts and crafts, baked goods (the infamous cupcake and cookie companies sprouting up the last year!), and services. All proceeds from the tombola go to support student tuition scholarships at ADVANCE. There are a growing amount of children's activity centers developing in Cairo and several have been kind enough to donate certificates towards free classes!

Each tombola basket has a value of between 500- 1,000 egp.

Tickets will go on sale April 1 at the LRC and ADVANCE School in Maadi. The winning tickets will be selected on May 5th at the conference, but you do not have to be present to win.

I am still collecting basket donations from companies until Thursday, March 15th. Companies can sponsor a whole basket or donate a few items that will be combined with other items to form a variety basket.

So far, I have collected the following donations with many more to come!:
