Using Cheap Web Hosting for Blogging

2011-06-08T20:02:00.000-07:00

It seems as if everyone is becoming interested in blogging lately, whether it be personal blogging, business blogging, news blogging, or blogging for profits. Creating your own blog and maintaining it on a regular basis can be enjoyable, and if the proper advertisement methods are used it can also be profitable. However, blogs are very diverse website types that can contain anywhere from a couple of pages to thousands of pages, depending on the age of the blog and the topics that it covers. Blogging is perhaps the best way for novice webmasters to begin their online endeavors with minimal experience, as blogging platforms/content management systems like WordPress are very user-friendly. Although most experienced webmasters frown upon cheap web hosting plans, a shared hosting or small VPS plan is sufficient to power a single blog, or even a network of smaller blogs. The following paragraphs review the process and advantages of using cheap types of web hosting for blogging.

Shared Hosting Blogging Advantages
In terms of monthly payments, shared hosting is by far the cheapest type of web hosting. Thus, it is an ideal starting point for bloggers that would like to begin building a blog without investing a substantial amount of money. This is especially true for bloggers that are planning on creating a nonprofit blog as a hobby, as making a significant investment for such an endeavor would not be sensible, considering the absence of a profitable return. Although the shared hosting environment certainly does not provide the same advantages as dedicated or VPS hosting, it does provide all of the basic tools and resources needed to create, manage, and even promote a blog or network of blogs. With shared hosting plans costing as little as $5-$10 per month, it's not surprising that many bloggers utilize this affordable hosting type.
Creating Blogs with Cheap Web Hosting Plans
Despite the limited capabilities of the shared hosting plan, in terms of server resources, the control panel includes all of the applications and tools needed to create professional looking blogs. Within your web hosting control panel you'll find a module that is devoted to installing scripts, which contains several simple installation applications that will help you install blog management platforms, content management systems, forum builders, and various other development applications. After installing a blog management/content management system you can immediately apply a predesigned template to the entire website without changing the content of the pages. This can be especially beneficial when redesigning your site, as you can change the look without affecting the content that you've worked so hard to develop.
Using Cheap VPS Hosting Plans for Blogging
Although VPS hosting costs slightly more per month (with prices ranging anywhere from $7-$200 per month depending on the capabilities of the plan), a cheap VPS hosting plan will actually have less of a startup cost as compared to a cheap shared plan. This is because a VPS hosting provider usually does not require you to make payments in advance, and instead will allow you to make monthly payments, whereas shared hosting providers usually require you to pay at least a year of service in advance. Thus, low-end VPS hosting plans provide all of the same capabilities of a shared hosting plan, with cheaper startup costs and more expandability.

3 Ways to Use Web Site Analytics for More Traffic

2011-06-04T13:57:00.000-07:00

Traffic is the centerpiece of the internet, influencing the success or downfall of every site in existence. Regardless of your web design skills, if you build a site and no one is around to see it, does it exist? Generating traffic can be extremely difficult for the novice webmaster because there are so may aspects of traffic generation that must be addressed. From social networking to search engine optimization, everyone is trying to find out what works.
Unfortunately, if you are unable to find out what is working, then most of your efforts will be wasted senselessly as your try to decipher the mysterious success you;re having. Fortunately, web hosting plans include applications within the control panel known as web analytics utilities, which are specifically designed to help you figure out the source of your traffic and determine which traffic generation techniques work the best. The following three methods can be used to maximize the benefits of web analytics and their uses.

Analyze Weekly Traffic
Although web analytics give you the ability to analyze traffic on a daily, weekly, and monthly schedule, it is best to view your result son weekly basis. Viewing the results of your SEO or traffic generation campaign will not give you a broad enough realization of what is happening, and viewing it on a monthly basis would require you to sustain a single method of promotion in order to judge the efficacy of the method, which due to time constraints is simply not plausible for most online business owners. Thus., analyzing traffic on a weekly basis, and introducing new traffic generation methods on a weekly basis appears to be the best way to see what is happening in real time.
Check Referrers
Although you may assume that you know the source of your traffic based on your recent promotion methods, the fact is it is impossible to know for sure without checking the referrers. A lot of people make the mistake of attributing their traffic success to the wrong source and then pursuing that avenue erroneously only to find that it was not that cause of their original success. To avoid this, check the referrers on a daily basis and focus on the traffic sources that are performing the best.
Generate Monthly Reports for Long Term Analysis
Although weekly analysis appears to put things into perspective a lot better, generating monthly reports is very important to the long term success of your business. Many web analytics applications include an extensive amount information on their monthly reports which are not included on the weekly reports. For example, you can get a better picture of traffic trends related to media events during that month by using monthly reports. Weekly reports should be use to analyze should be used to improve short term success, while monthly reports should be use in retrospect to teach you about your mistakes and beneficial decisions during the previous month. In order for this method to be effective however it is important that you keep track of every technique you use throughout the month.

Are You Safe from Hackers?

2011-06-01T16:36:00.000-07:00

We don't use E-gold very often since most of our online business and customer sales are conducted through our online merchant account. However, we occasionally have someone who will request paying by E-gold so we keep an account there for this reason. Once a month or so we withdraw the funds and decided to do so yesterday. Imagine our dismay when we logged into our E-gold account yesterday and found our balance to be a big fat ZERO! We had checked the balance just a few days ago so we knew this was not correct. After investigating the history of the account, we found that a spend had been made to another e-gold account user WITHOUT our knowledge or authorization. We had been hacked!

Since we have up to date anti-virus and firewall software on our computer, we assumed we were safe. Not so! It seems this is not enough to keep away the hackers as the software does not prevent "Spyware" from being installed on your computer.

"Spyware" is software that gets onto your computer and literally "spies" on your activities. The spying can range from relatively harmless use of cookies tracking you across multiple websites... to extremely dangerous "keystroke loggers" which record passwords, credit cards, and other personal data. That data then gets relayed to the person who put the software on your computer.

Spyware gets on your computer in one of several different ways.

First, it rides along with software you download from the 'Net and install on your system.

Second, they come as email attachments (much like viruses) and automatically install themselves on your computer when you open the email message.

Third, hackers find an open port on your computer and use the "back door" to install basically anything they want.

And fourth, the more malicious types, like keystroke loggers, can even get installed by someone with direct physical access to your computer such as an employer, suspicious spouse, business competitor, or someone who wants to know exactly what you're doing.

So how do you protect yourself against these malicious hackers? You need a program that specifically scans your system for the tens-of-thousands of existing spyware programs along with the new ones appearing daily.

Below are two programs which specifically check for and remove spyware from your system:

"Spybot Search & Destroy" - www.safer-networking.org
"Ad Aware" - www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

You may have spyware lurking on your computer right now so protect yourself today by downloading one of the above programs!

As a point of reference, we contacted E-gold and informed them that we had been hacked. We provided them with the account number of the person who received the funds and asked for a contact e-mail address on the person. E-gold informed us that they could not provide that information without a "court order" and that basically there was no way of getting the money back!

Take action today to protect yourself from this growing threat! The bottom line is: - Keep your anti-virus program current

- Install a firewall
- Carefully screen software before installing it
- Scan specifically for spyware weekly
- Stay current on this growing threat.

The Search For The Perfect Computer

2011-05-28T10:19:00.000-07:00

Finding that perfect computer can be a challenge when the standards are always changing and you have no idea what the best computer for your needs is. It seems that the “best” computers are from different manufacturers every computer season. So just how do you get your self the best deal on the computer that is perfect for you?

One thing to remember is never forget about the basics - the hardware. Notebook computers basically require three things to run. They need ample hard drive storage space to record great amounts of files without fear of using up all the storage space.

They also need plenaty of RAM. This short-term memory is the process essentially runs open applications, so the more of it your Laptop Computer has, the faster and greater amount of multitasking it can get done. Notebook Computers need a super fast processor to juice up the online experience plus the speed of your applications.

Dont forget to inspect the included options that a Laptop Computer offers. Depending on what you require your Laptop Computer for, you might need mobility such as wireless Wi Fi technology, USB and FireWire ports, and mobile chip technologies like Intel's new Centrino. Accessories should focus on a Notebook Computer's primary benefit over desktops, which is, of course, mobility.

Don’t forget to compare the best of its class with the middle of the road model. Sometimes the best and fastest is not needed for your purposes and you will just be wasting money on power you will never use. This is a list to help you know which elements to look for that all top-breed computer laptops possess.

Just as you would when buying your desktop computer, you need to consider your needs when you’re looking for laptops. No longer is their primary purpose their ability to be carried. Now there are laptops strictly made for playing video games. Others are packed with the high-tech graphics programs to design these video games. While other notebooks are loaded with business capabilities such as Bluetooth wireless access and FireWire ports. You need to decide what you want it for and buy accordingly.

If you are looking for portability, then many laptops today are made in a mini size and this is being embraced by consumers worldwide. The world of technology is becoming less cumbersome. The ease with which people are able to conduct business, communicate and have fun using technology pushes the industry to create small versions of just about anything and laptops are no different.

In the end, there are the other things that make a laptop great. If you are looking for one of the better computers, you need to take all the elements into consideration. Body weight, chassis style, screen size, battery life - these are the elements that some shoppers overlook.

Strategies for Maximizing the Life of Your Hard Drive

2011-05-26T09:13:00.000-07:00

If I asked you the question: which part of your computer is the most fragile, what would you say? What if I asked: which part is most important to you?
Often, the answer to both of these questions is your Hard Drive.

Your hard drive is likely one the most important things you own. It contains work data, school data, emails, photos, music, movies, tax information, etc… Incidentally, the hard drive is also one of only two moving components in your computer (the other being your optical drive). The following is a list of important maintenance and monitoring techniques you can use to maximize the life of your hard drive and prevent data loss.

Hard drives are physically fragile – handle with care
Statistics show that 25% of lost data is due to a failure of a portable drive. (Source: 2001 Cost of Downtime Survey Results)
Contrary to its seemingly rugged appearance, your hard disk is a very delicate device that writes and reads data using microscopic magnetic particles. Any vibration, shock, and other careless operation may damage your drive and cause or contribute to the possibility of a failure. This is especially relevant for notebook users, as they are most at risk of drive failure due to physical damage, theft, and other causes beyond their control. That’s why we recommend regular backup of notebook hard drives, as often as possible.
Possible solutions include external USB or Firewire drives (although these are prone to the same risks), desktop synchronization, or backup at a data center through the web.

Hard drives write data in a non-linear way forcing it to become fragmented.

When files accumulate on your hard drive, they do not just get written in a linear fashion. A hard drive writes files in small pieces and scatters them over the surface. The fuller your hard drive becomes and the more files you save and delete the worse file fragmentation can be. Hard drive access times increase with fragmentation since your drive must work harder to find all the pieces of the files. The more fragmented your data is, the harder the actuator arm has to work to find each piece of a file.

A case in point: Disk fragmentation is a common problem for users of Outlook Express and database software. Each time outlook saves new mail, it does so in a different physical location from the previous time. This results in extreme fragmentation, causing longer hard drive access times and forcing more strain on the heads. This strain can eventually lead to a head crash, and often that means a virtually unrecoverable drive. Finally, in the event of a total crash, a fragmented drive is much more difficult to recover then a healthy defragged drive.

Luckily, Windows makes it remarkably easy to defrag your hard drive, simply launch the Disk Defragmenter utility (Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools), choose which disk or partition you’d like to defragment and set it to work overnight or while you are not actively using your computer. Defragmentation will speed up your computer and ensure a longer life for your hard drive.

A very small power surge can fry a hard drive – use a UPS and turn off your computer when you can

Another little-known fact about the fragility of your hard drive is its susceptibility to electrical failure. An electrical failure can be caused by a power surge, lightening strikes, power brown-outs, incorrect wiring, a faulty or old power supply, and many other factors. If a power surge enters your computer, it may do an unpredictable amount of damage, including destroying your hard drive’s electronics or crashing the heads and possibly resulting in total data loss.
The best way to protect your computer from such dangers is to use a highly rated protected power bar or an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). Although these devices won’t eliminate the chances of a crash, they will serve as effective protection in most cases. Also, you can minimize the danger of an electrical problem and reduce wear of your hard drive by turning off your computer or using power-save modes whenever possible. It’s a known fact that 100% of drives fail, the question is when will it happen and will you be prepared? Make sure to check out the knowledgebase section of our website for more detailed information on how electrical power affects your computer.

Be SMART, monitor the health of your drive to prevent unexpected crashes

All modern hard drives have a self-monitoring technology called SMART (Self Monitoring Analysis & Reporting Technology). What most people don’t realize is that the majority of hard drive failures do not have to be unexpected. Most failures occur as a result of long-term problems which can be predicted. By regularly monitoring disk health and performance, you can know about potential hard drive problems before you lose any of your data.

Several excellent utilities are available, including DiskView and Stellar SMART for standard IDE and SATA desktop drives. Also available are tools that monitor the health of SCSI drives and full RAID Array systems. Ariolic Software offers a great utility called ActiveSMART.

The only fool-proof way to prevent data loss is... Backup!

If you only take one of the suggestions here to heart, let it be this one: always back up your important data. After all the monitoring and all the prevention measures are in place, one fact still remains: all hard drives fail. Backing up regularly will ensure that you’re never caught without your critical data. For individuals, the simplest solutions include external portable hard drives, dvd’s, and online storage. For businesses, we recommend renting space at a secure data centre and implementing a disaster recovery plan, regardless of the size of your business.

I hope that the above techniques give you some idea of the importance of hard drive maintenance and provide some insights in how you can protect yourself from data loss.

Cleaning and Organizing Your Computer

2011-05-25T23:03:00.000-07:00

It is a good idea to think of your PC as an office. It stores files, programs, pictures. This can be compared to an actual office's files, machines and decorations. The operating system is the boss. With this image in mind, think of an office you've visited that was slow and inefficient. There were probably many different reasons for the inefficiency. This is the same with a computer. There can be many items that slow down your computer. Perhaps the one most commonly overlooked is disorganization and clutter.

Disk Cleanup

An office can accumulate a lot of unnecessary files, machines, and decorations. This is the same with your computer. One of the best ways to keep this clutter under control is to perform a cleaning utility periodically. In Windows this cleaning utility will be called a "disk cleanup." It removes a variety of unnecessary files depending on the options you have selected.

To perform a disk cleanup on Windows XP you can simply click on "my computer" under the start menu. Than right click on your "c drive" or "hard disk" and choose properties. Than click "disk cleanup" and follow the prompts. When selecting files to clean up, or delete, Windows will give you information to help you decide. When looking over the list of file types, you would simple click on the name of the file type and read the description placed below in the description area. This will let you know if the files can be safely deleted. To select the file group just check the box next to the group name. When finished selecting press "OK" to finish.

Now, performing a disk cleanup is not very time consuming, just a couple minutes, and it may save more time in the end by making your computer run faster. However, a disk cleanup should be run periodically rather than just once in a great while. One way to make this run periodically is to make it a scheduled task. This will allow your computer to run it automatically with intervals and time of day determined by you. Yet, you can always run it yourself periodically without creating a scheduled task.

Add or Remove Programs

The information given above can help you get rid of some unnecessary files, but you may also need to clean out some unnecessary programs as well. This can be done using the "add or remove programs" utility in Windows. This is located in the control panel and lists all of your currently installed programs along with an option to uninstall them. It is a good idea to browse through the add or remove programs utility every once in a while just to make sure that all programs are of usefulness.

If there are programs listed that are no longer used, you can simply highlight the program and click the uninstall button. Windows will than begin the process to uninstall the program. In most cases, to finish uninstalling a program, it is wise to restart your computer. This will dump and files that are held temporarily.

The add or remove programs utility is very useful, but not all of the programs are listed up front. Programs that come pre-installed on your computer and the Windows operating system can also be uninstalled. For instance, Outlook Express is a default e-mail program that comes with the Windows XP operating system. If you do not use this e-mail program you can uninstall it. Click "add or remove windows components" found in the add or remove programs utility and simply follow the instructions.

Defragment

Many offices contain a large number of files and programs that are valuable and cannot be thrown away. In fact, they may contain files that are not even used, but still have to be retained for some reason. Although these files must remain in the office, they need to be organized. This is why we create file folders that hold groups of files that are related. Than we store them in cabinets that are arranged in alphabetic order.

In a computer, the files that are saved are placed on the hard drive. However, they are placed according to the time that they were saved. So, if you open a word document and save the file as "file A" and than open another document and save it as "file B", you have a "file A" placed next to "file B." This is fine, but if you open "file A" later on and save it again, than the added information is saved next to "file B."

When files are broken up this way it is referred to as a fragmented file. This means that the computer must find the first part of the file and then find the second part of the file to open that one word document. This can make your computer run slower. However, Windows has created a utility that is meant to rearrange files so that they are no longer fragmented but sit right next to each other.

You can run the disk defragmenter by selecting "all programs" under the start button. Next, select "accessories" and "system tools" and you will see "disk defragmenter." In fact, this is also an alternative way to select the disk cleanup mentioned earlier. Before starting the defragmenter you can analyze your hard drive to see if Windows recommends performing the defragmenter. It will either say that you should or should not defragment at this time.

If you need to defragment your computer, simply hit the defragment button. It may take your computer a while to finish this task depending on the speed of your computer and the amount of defragmented files. It could take from about 15-30 minutes or more. However, you can still use the computer while the disk defragmenter is working.

5 Important Factors When Choosing Your Ink Cartridges

2011-05-20T08:44:00.000-07:00

There are a lot of factors to consider when you need new printer ink. Whether you need cheap Canon refills, Brother ink, or any other brand of cheap ink cartridges, if you fail to take these factors into account, then you could end up failing to get the best deal. So what are the main things that you need to remember? Here are five to help you out.

1. Longer Lasting
You may think that all ink cartridges will last the same amount of time and provide the same amount of prints, but this is not the case. Different brands and different models will all provide slightly differing amounts of ink, and some will therefore last longer than others. You can also get larger cartridges which last longer and may work out as more economical. This is really something that you should start thinking about when you first choose a printer as it could save you a lot of money down the line.
2. Cheap to Replace
It makes sense that you don't want to be paying more than you have to for your printer ink, so price is always going to be a concern. Certain brands provide cheaper ink cartridges than others, and some printer models also use cheaper cartridges. Whether you shop for cheap HP ink cartridges or cheap Epson ink cartridges, you may also want to look for cartridges which can be refilled easily as these can work out as the most economical of all.
3. Ease of Replacing
Some printer cartridges are very easy to take out and replace in a printer, whereas others seem to be a lot more difficult. If you are not keen on spending hours playing around with your printer just to replace the ink cartridges then you should find one which makes replacements very easy to carry out.
4. Easy to Find
If you go with one of the larger ink cartridge manufacturers then you should have fewer problems when it comes to replacing them. Some cartridges can be harder to find than others so it is best to go for a cartridge where you know that you will be able to find a replacement with ease, either on the high street or online.
5. Reputation of Manufacturer
If you always want the best quality outcome from your printing then it makes sense to choose ink cartridges from a manufacturer with a good reputation. Cheap Epson ink cartridges, cheap Canon ink cartridges and other brands with a good reputation could be the best option here. Make sure you do your research before buying a new printer to make sure that when it comes time to change your ink, you know you can purchase ink suitable for the make and model of your printer easily and at a reasonable cost.
Conclusion
Make Sure You Choose the Right Ink Cartridges
If you take the above factors into account when you choose your cheap ink cartridges then you will have a good chance of finding the best cartridges which will last you a long time and lead to better results. So consider these factors and choose your cartridges better in the future.

Computer Maintenance

2011-05-16T10:15:00.000-07:00

Our computers and laptops are just like appliances. Appliances need to be cleaned and maintained in order to work well. There are things in the house that need to be maintained so that you can use it for a long time. Just like our cars, we bring it to auto repair shops so we can see if there are any problems or we simply bring them there for maintenance. It needs to be checked so that we can prevent further damage if there are any broken parts. This is a way for it to work at its best. When it comes to computers, this has to be done also. For it to work properly, you have to do some computer maintenance.
When we use our computers, we can do so many things. We can type, surf the net, chat, send mails, watch movies, download music and other things. Because there are so many things that we do with it, a lot of things can happen also. Since we spend a lot of time online, there could be unwanted programs and applications that could enter our system. Also, since we download different files, there is also a possibility wherein you download files with an unwanted virus. That is why computer maintenance is important so you can see and remove these things.

What do you do when you maintain something? You check every part of the object and you look for all the problems that it may have. If repairs are needed, then you must do all the things necessary for it to be fixed. For the computers, what are things that you need to do for its maintenance? Here are the things you must do:
• Run an anti-virus/computer scan every week if you use your computer often
• Delete all the virus that are found in the system
• Delete all unnecessary files
• Delete files that are unknown or files that is in your system that is not yours
• Remove or uninstall programs that you do not use
• If you use the internet, delete all temporary internet files. Although it can speed the loading time on some websites, it could take up a lot of space in your system
• Have a backup for your files so if you need to delete them from your main computer, you always have a backup
For a typical or regular computer user, these are the necessary things that they must do but for computer technicians, they do a lot of things for their computer maintenance. They have different programs that they use and they type and configure so many things. Those are for computer geeks and lovers but for ordinary users, you can simply have a weekly scan for viruses and other unwanted programs. That is the simplest and easiest way for your computer to work properly. Every user would want their computer to load fast and to work the way it is supposed to. For you to be able to enjoy your computers and laptops, just have regular computer maintenance.

Computer Performance

2011-05-15T02:24:00.000-07:00
