The Church

noreply@blogger.com (Sir Shanksalot) — Tue, 14 Dec 2010 17:00:00 +0000

I've known a number of people over the years who've sworn by Australia's The Church, particularly live. Have to confess, I'm not too familiar with them but gave a listen to their new EP this morning (below). First few tracks are pretty solid. On tour after the new year, so I think I'll see if this "live" buzz is all it's cracked up to be.

The Black Angels - Young Men Dead

noreply@blogger.com (Unit) — Mon, 13 Dec 2010 23:02:00 +0000

This song, by the Black Angels, has been in heavy rotation for me for the past month.

I knew I liked you Shanksy.

The Sniper at the Gates of Heaven

noreply@blogger.com (Sir Shanksalot) — Mon, 13 Dec 2010 20:19:00 +0000

Been digging the Black Angels pretty heavily the last couple of weeks. Think Brooksy saw them a couple years ago, backing Roky Erickson. As much of the world prepares to celebrate Jesus' birthday next week, "Sniper at the Gates of Heaven" will be on heavy rotation at my place.

Tame Impala

noreply@blogger.com (brooksy) — Thu, 09 Dec 2010 20:17:00 +0000

Surprisingly our resident powerpop/hardcore head turned me on to these shoe-gazing Aussies. I dig the dreamy psych mixed with a Blue Cheer edge. haven't had time to dig into the LP....but what I hear is aces..

How Soon Is Now?

Lame political references to the Smiths makes me feel pretty dang old...

Norm

noreply@blogger.com (brooksy) — Thu, 09 Dec 2010 04:19:00 +0000

8Clip linked me up to this sweet piece about Norm. Big fan of his Bay Area graf. Used to be Grime's apprentice and has links to the SoCal hardcore scene. always dug his graf and tattoos. Best thing about this piece is him making his own tattoo guns. Sick.

Austin Comp

Heard Matador's Austin compilation? Not exactly a Chaos set, more indie (again, Matador)... but not a bad collection... includes Bad Sports, Harlem, Love Collector...

Voices

noreply@blogger.com (Sir Shanksalot) — Wed, 08 Dec 2010 02:55:00 +0000

That "Gimme Shelter" vocal track from Merry Clayton (who does Brooksy's fave cover of the song) still has me reeling. Started digging back into some old shit, and have gotten stuck on Roy Orbison. Fuck, nice to rediscover him once in a while...still some of the best pipes ever.

Particularly love this early demo version of "Claudette" with him by himself...complete with a fuck-up in the middle. Then the live version of "Candy Man"...that harmonica almost steals the show. Gotta love the simplicity, and the talent.

Shit, what would the rest of us do without distortion pedals and the like? We'd have to actually be good.

London Calling The Movie

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Tue, 07 Dec 2010 02:15:00 +0000

I suspect I'd rather watch Mystery Train several times over than see the under-production Clash movie... but you never know... 24 Party People was fun. Slate.com asked the question today: Who should play Joe Strummer? I haven't the faintest idea. Clive Owen perhaps?

Jason Donahue

noreply@blogger.com (brooksy) — Fri, 03 Dec 2010 19:09:00 +0000

J Don is a tattooist who works out of Idle Hand in SF. The guy is fast as shit and has STYLE. He's has inked up a couple of the B&M crew and will no doubt do more. This peacock snake thing is mental.

Birthday Present

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Fri, 03 Dec 2010 17:23:00 +0000

A heap of US hardcore for free. Bit of a re-gift I suppose. Sorry I didn't wrap it. Hope you don't already have all of 'em, Brooksy.

Not hardcore, but I like to hear it on the day I get older:
