How to use Gmail Confidential Mode

Tap on Compose , and type the recipient’s email ID, subject and the body copy of the mail. You can even attach files that you want to send across.

You will see a small lock and time icon at the bottom, tap on that.

A new pop-up window will open where you can set the expiration date, with options from one-day to one-week, one-month, three-months, and five-years.If you set one-day, the e-mail will be deleted after 24-hours,Set the date and then click on save

You also get an option to set a passcode. If you don’t set a passcode, the e-mail will be easily accessible to the recipient. However, if you wish to set a passcode, you will have to enter recipient’s phone number. Once that is done, just save, and send the e-mail

If you have set a passcode, the recipient will receive the email, but will have to verify his / her identity by entering the OTP sent on their mobile phone.

If the OTP matches, the recipient can then view the contents of the email. The core benefit of Gmail Confidential Mode is that the recipient will not be able to copy paste the content, forward the email, print or download the attachment.

One is the loneliest number, especially if you’re a moon circling the Earth (Earth is rather far away, after all). But just as you are about to lose hope and accept your solitary fate, NASA announces there could be a second moon come to keep you company.

Sure, it is smaller than you and goes around the Earth amazingly irregularly, but still, two is always better than one.

It turns out that the second “moon,”asteroid 2016 HO3, is currently locked into “a little dance” with Earth, and it’s been dancing for a century. The rock’s orbit is highly elliptical, causing it to go a wee bit off tangent—between 38 and 100 times the distance of our planet’s primary moon—and bob up and down across Earth’s orbital plane.

HO3 is tilted by about 8° and it circles the Sun for 365.93 days, which is slightly longer than Earth’s 365.24 day-long year.

Because of its tilted and elliptical orbit, sometimes it is a bit closer to the Sun and moving a slightly faster than Earth. Other times, it is a bit farther out and moving a bit more slowly, though it never gets closer than about 14 million kilometers from Earth or farther than about 40 million kilometers.

NASA says it’s larger than 120 feet (36.5 metres) across, but no more than 300 feet (91 metres) wide, and will orbit for many more centuries to come.

Astronomers first found out about 2016 HO3 on April 27 with the Pan-STARRS 1 asteroid survey telescope on Haleakala, Hawaii.

'Alien Artifact' Is Going to Pass Earth in 2017'

About 20 years ago, a mysterious object made a close approach to Earth that some believe was indicative of a controlled encounter. In 2017, the object is due to swing pass Earth again. Ross Jones reports.

Let’s, just for a moment, take a break and amuse ourselves with a little light mystery,

Mysterious object is known as 1991 VG and it was first spotted in November 1991 by astronomer James Scotti at the University of Arizona. Today, many conspiracy theorists think that this is a genuine “alien probe”, which is deliberately set to fly near Earth in 2017.

The object has confused astronomers ever since it was first spotted, mainly because of its strange rotation and longevity in space. Some people think that this is a section of the Apollo 12 rocket, but according to Scotti it is probably something else:

“We looked into all the possibilities for it being man-made. There were a few possible spacecraft and rocket bodies that might be 1991 VG. But, when we looked into each, we were able to eliminate each of them”

According to other people, the strange object may also be a secret Soviet rocket from the Space Race era. It is a fact that the Soviets had equally powerful rockets as the American ones and it is quite possible that they launched one to get to the moon and covered it up if things went badly.

When 1991 VG was first spotted, it was around 10 metres in diameter, passing 280,000 miles from Earth – around 50,000 miles further than the Earth and the moon. The object showed a rapid rate of rotation and its brightness fluctuated. At that time, this kind of behaviour was not observed at any asteroid of similar size. The object’s orbit was also similar to Earth’s orbit.

After gathering more information about 1991 VG, Scotti realised that this object had passed Earth one more time in March 1975. Again this is something that is not characteristic for an asteroid. They don’t tend to pass twice in the same spot

Duncan Steel, an astronomer at University of Adelaide, suggested it might be an “alien probe observed in the vicinity of our planet.” He only mentioned this theory in order to disprove it. In further interviews, he has stated that he isn’t convinced that VG 1991 is of extraterrestrial origin.

This hasn’t stopped conspiracy theorists from continuing to spread the idea of an extraterrestrial origin of the object. They still keep citing Steele’s work as their main source.

When it does fly past Earth sometime in the summer of 2017, it will only be seen in the southern hemisphere. Since Scotti first spotted VG 1991, astronomers have discovered that asteroids under 100 metres have remarkably fast rotations. As a result of this knowledge, Scotti says we can’t rule out the possibility that VG 1991 is a natural space rock. Scotti stated:

“One possibility would be that it is ejecta from a lunar impact. Another possibility is that the Yarkovsky force, caused by the thermal emissions of a rotating object, systematically pushed the object around over long times. It’s still a puzzle.”

As part of Google's ongoing commitment to advancing computing and technology, we are pleased to provide scholarships and programs to encourage students to excel in their studies and become active role models and leaders. We hope these programs also help in dismantling barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields.

The Scholarship

Recipients of the Google Anita Borg Scholarship: Asia Pacific will receive a scholarship amount specific to their local region in respect to tuition. A group of female undergraduate and graduate students will be chosen from the applicant pool across Australia, China Mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia and India. Scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of each candidate's academic background and demonstrated leadership. All scholarship recipients will be invited to attend our annual Google scholars’ retreat in the Google Hyderbaad office from August 30th to September 2nd 2016. As an Anita Borg Scholar, you will participate in a unique program that includes professional development as well as outreach in your community which kicks-off at the Scholars Retreat in summer 2016.

OpenGL installation method on Ubuntu 14.04

This method will also work on Almost all versions of Ubuntu .

Open your terminal and first install necessary libraries to build our packages.

sudo apt-get install build-essential

Now we are ready to install FreeGlut. Lets install them using this command on our terminal

sudo apt-get install freeglut3 freeglut3-dev

Optional :

We need one last library which is names “libglui2c2”download And install it with this command.

dpkg -i libglui2c2_2.36-4_amd64.deb

Now open a file with your favorite text editor. In this case i will use Geany as my IDE. Create a new file. And write some Opengl code. Now to compile that file you have to reference OpenGL library that you have used. So, at the begining of your code, include this library.

#include <GL/glut.h>

Save the file. Now you have to compile the file. Open your terminal. Go to the directory your files are situated. Lets assume the file you are now working on is named “test.c” . To compile “test.c” input this command on your terminal.

gcc -o test test.c -lglut -lGL -lGLU

Here “test” is the output file. To execute the output file just input

./test

Dear Max,

Your mother and I don't yet have the words to describe the hope you give us for the future. Your new life is full of promise, and we hope you will be happy and healthy so you can explore it fully. You've already given us a reason to reflect on the world we hope you live in.

Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today.

While headlines often focus on what's wrong, in many ways the world is getting better. Health is improving. Poverty is shrinking. Knowledge is growing. People are connecting. Technological progress in every field means your life should be dramatically better than ours today.

We will do our part to make this happen, not only because we love you, but also because we have a moral responsibility to all children in the next generation.

We believe all lives have equal value, and that includes the many more people who will live in future generations than live today. Our society has an obligation to invest now to improve the lives of all those coming into this world, not just those already here.

But right now, we don't always collectively direct our resources at the biggest opportunities and problems your generation will face.

Consider disease. Today we spend about 50 times more as a society treating people who are sick than we invest in research so you won't get sick in the first place.

Medicine has only been a real science for less than 100 years, and we've already seen complete cures for some diseases and good progress for others. As technology accelerates, we have a real shot at preventing, curing or managing all or most of the rest in the next 100 years. 

Today, most people die from five things -- heart disease, cancer, stroke, neurodegenerative and infectious diseases -- and we can make faster progress on these and other problems.

Once we recognize that your generation and your children's generation may not have to suffer from disease, we collectively have a responsibility to tilt our investments a bit more towards the future to make this reality. Your mother and I want to do our part.

Curing disease will take time. Over short periods of five or ten years, it may not seem like we're making much of a difference. But over the long term, seeds planted now will grow, and one day, you or your children will see what we can only imagine: a world without suffering from disease.

There are so many opportunities just like this. If society focuses more of its energy on these great challenges, we will leave your generation a much better world.

Our hopes for your generation focus on two ideas: advancing human potential and promoting equality.

Advancing human potential is about pushing the boundaries on how great a human life can be.

Our generation grew up in classrooms where we all learned the same things at the same pace regardless of our interests or needs.

Your generation will set goals for what you want to become -- like an engineer, health worker, writer or community leader. You'll advance quickly in subjects that interest you most, and get as much help as you need in your most challenging areas. You'll explore topics that aren't even offered in schools today. Your teachers will also have better tools and data to help you achieve your goals.

The internet is so important that for every 10 people who gain internet access, about one person is lifted out of poverty and about one new job is created.

Yet still more than half of the world's population -- more than 4 billion people -- don't have access to the internet.

If our generation connects them, we can lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty. We can also help hundreds of millions of children get an education and save millions of lives by helping people avoid disease.

This is another long term effort that can be advanced by technology and partnership. It will take inventing new technology to make the internet more affordable and bring access to unconnected areas. It will take partnering with governments, non-profits and companies. It will take engaging with communities to understand what they need. Good people will have different views on the best path forward, and we will try many efforts before we succeed.

But together we can succeed and create a more equal world.

Technology can't solve problems by itself. Building a better world starts with building strong and healthy communities.

Children have the best opportunities when they can learn. And they learn best when they're healthy. 

Health starts early -- with loving family, good nutrition and a safe, stable environment.

Children who face traumatic experiences early in life often develop less healthy minds and bodies. Studies show physical changes in brain development leading to lower cognitive ability.

Your mother is a doctor and educator, and she has seen this firsthand.

If you have to wonder whether you'll have food or rent, or worry about abuse or crime, then it's difficult to reach your full potential.

We need institutions that understand these issues are all connected. That's the philosophy of the new type of school your mother is building. 

By partnering with schools, health centers, parent groups and local governments, and by ensuring all children are well fed and cared for starting young, we can start to treat these inequities as connected. Only then can we collectively start to give everyone an equal opportunity.

It will take many years to fully develop this model. But it's another example of how advancing human potential and promoting equality are tightly linked. If we want either, we must first build inclusive and healthy communities.

For your generation to live in a better world, there is so much more our generation can do.

Today your mother and I are committing to spend our lives doing our small part to help solve these challenges. I will continue to serve as Facebook's CEO for many, many years to come, but these issues are too important to wait until you or we are older to begin this work. By starting at a young age, we hope to see compounding benefits throughout our lives.

As you begin the next generation of the Chan Zuckerberg family, we also begin the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to join people across the world to advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation. Sorry, Wi-Fi. We had some good times together

What if every light bulb in the world could also transmit data? At TEDGlobal, Harald Haas demonstrates, for the first time, a device that could do exactly that. By flickering the light from a single LED, a change too quick for the human eye to detect, he can transmit far more data than a cellular tower -- and do it in a way that's more efficient, secure and widespread.

Expect to hear a whole lot more about Li-Fi - a wireless technology that transmits high-speed data using visible light communication (VLC) - in the coming months. With scientists achieving speeds of 224 gigabits per second in the lab using Li-Fi earlier this year, the potential for this technology to change everything about the way we use the Internet is huge.

And now, scientists have taken Li-Fi out of the lab for the first time, trialling it in offices and industrial environments in Tallinn, Estonia, reporting that they can achieve data transmission at 1 GB per second - that's 100 times faster than current average Wi-Fi speeds.

Li-Fi was invented by Harald Haas from the University of Edinburgh, Scotlandback in 2011, when he demonstrated for the first time that by flickering the light from a single LED, he could transmit far more data than a cellular tower. Think back to that lab-based record of 224 gigabits per second - that's 18 movies of 1.5 GB each being downloaded every single second.

The technology uses Visible Light Communication (VLC), a medium that uses visible light between 400 and 800 terahertz (THz). It works basically like an incredibly advanced form of Morse code - just like switching a torch on and off according to a certain pattern can relay a secret message, flicking an LED on and off at extreme speeds can be used to write and transmit things in binary code.

And while you might be worried about how all that flickering in an office environment would drive you crazy, don’t worry - we’re talking LEDs that can be switched on and off at speeds imperceptible to the naked eye.

Apple’s Swift Is Going Open Source

A year ago, Apple released the Swift programming language to the public. Not long after that, Microsoft open sourced the .NET Framework. And almost as if in rebuttal, Apple just announced that Swift too will be made open source. Plot twist after plot twist.

Here are two companies that sit at the top of the technology food chain, both known for their proprietary schemes and designs. To see them officially adopt theopen source philosophy, at least to some degree, feels extremely out of character for both, but it’s ultimately good news for all of us.

It’s nothing short of monumental, marking a huge milestone in the evolution of the programming industry. Even if you aren’t a programmer yourself, these developments will impact you. Want to know why and how? Keep reading.

What the Heck Is Swift?

Have you ever wanted to create an iOS or OS X app? You wouldn’t be the first, considering how widespread the Apple ecosystem is and how profitable those users can be when it comes to app purchases.

The one big problem, until recently, was that Apple apps had to be coded in Objective C, a not-so-modern programming language that lacks the relative user-friendliness of alternatives like Java, C#, and Python. Swift aims to address that, and more.

According to the official Swift 2.0 release, here’s what Apple means by “open source”:

Swift source code will be released under an OSI-approved permissive license.
Contributions from the community will be accepted — and encouraged.
At launch we intend to contribute ports for OS X, iOS, and Linux.
Source code will include the Swift compiler and standard library.
We think it would be amazing for Swift to be on all your favorite platforms.

So what’s the big deal here? The fact that Swift is now open source doesn’t mean anything on its own. It’s the implications that we care about, which is why our attention should be trained on bullet point number four — the compiler is now open source.

How This Benefits You and Me

Everything above is like a candy shop for programmers, but most of us aren’t programmers and these details may be flying over your head. We don’t care as much about making apps as we do about using the ones that are on the app store. So, do we have reason to celebrate?

Technology may Influence Human Evolution

There’s not a single aspect of the human experience that hasn’t been touched by technology. Everything from industry, to medicine, to how we work has been fundamentally reshaped by the technologies which emerged in the second half of the 20th century.

Technology can also change the human in terms of his or her characteristics and abilities. Want to be smarter? You can take a Nootropic. Want to perceive the world with more detail and more information? Put on Google Glasses. Want to get stronger or more physically agile? There are medicines or robotic exoskeletons.

Technology has moved away from merely making our lives more convenient, and now it has the potential to change every aspect of what we are as humans. We are becoming transhuman.

Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam (15 October 1931 – 27 July 2015) was the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. A career scientist turned reluctant politician, Kalam was born and raised in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu and studied physics and aerospace engineering. He spent the next four decades as a scientist and science administrator, mainly at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and was intimately involved in India's civilian space program and military missile development efforts.[1] He thus came to be known as the Missile Man of India for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology.[2] He also played a pivotal organizational, technical and political role in India's Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998, the first since the original nuclear test by India in 1974.[3]

Kalam was elected President of India in 2002 with the support of both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Indian National Congress. After serving a term of five years, he returned to his civilian life of education, writing, and public service. He received several prestigious awards, including the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.

While delivering a lecture on Livable Planet Earth at Indian Institute of Management Shillong on 27 July 2015, Kalam suffered a severe heart attack at around 6:30 p.m IST. He was rushed to the Bethany Hospital in a critical condition; despite efforts to revive him, he died of cardiac arrest at 7:45 p.m IST

Kalam started his career by designing a small helicopter for the Indian Army, but remained unconvinced with the choice of his job at DRDO.
Kalam was also part of the INCOSPAR committee working under Vikram Sarabhai, the renowned space scientist.[9] In 1969, Kalam was transferred to theIndian Space Research Organization (ISRO) where he was the project director of India's first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III) which successfully deployed the Rohini satellite in near earth orbit in July 1980.
Joining ISRO was one of Kalam's biggest achievements in life and he is said to have found himself when he started to work on the SLV project.
Kalam first started work on an expandable rocket project independently at DRDO in 1965. In 1969, Kalam received the government's approval and expanded the program to include more engineers.
In 1963–64, he visited Nasa's Langley Research Center in Hampton Virginia, Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland andWallops Flight Facility situated at Eastern Shore of Virginia.
During the period between the 1970s and 1990s, Kalam made an effort to develop the Polar SLV and SLV-III projects, both of which proved to be success.
In the 1970s, Kalam also directed two projects, namely, Project Devil and Project Valiant , which sought to develop ballistic missiles from the technology of the successful SLV programme. Despite the disapproval of Union Cabinet, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi allotted secret funds for these aerospace projects through her discretionary powers under Kalam's directorship.Kalam played an integral role convincing the Union Cabinet to conceal the true nature of these classified aerospace projects.
His research and educational leadership brought him great laurels and prestige in 1980s, which prompted the government to initiate an advanced missile program under his directorship.
Kalam and Dr. V. S. Arunachalam, metallurgist and scientific adviser to the Defense Minister, worked on the suggestion by the then Defense Minister, R. Venkataraman on a proposal for simultaneous development of a quiver of missiles instead of taking planned missiles one by one.R Venkatraman was instrumental in getting the cabinet approval for allocating 388 crore rupees for the mission, named Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (I.G.M.D.P) and appointed Kalam as the Chief Executive.
Kalam played a major part in developing many missiles under the mission including Agni, an intermediate range ballistic missile and Prithvi, the tactical surface-to-surface missile, although the projects have been criticised for mismanagement and cost and time overruns.
He was the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister and the Secretary of Defence Research and Development Organisation from July 1992 to December 1999.
The Pokhran-II nuclear tests were conducted during this period where he played an intensive political and technological role. Kalam served as the Chief Project Coordinator, along with R. Chidambaram during the testing phase. Photos and snapshots of him taken by the media elevated Kalam as the country's top nuclear scientist.
In 1998, along with cardiologist Dr.Soma Raju, Kalam developed a low cost Coronary stent. It was named as "Kalam-Raju Stent" honouring them.
In 2012, the duo, designed a rugged tablet PC for health care in rural areas, which was named as "Kalam-Raju Tablet".

EARTH 2.0 ( NASA discovers Earth-like planet in ‘habitable zone)

Kepler-452b is an exoplanet orbiting the G-class star Kepler-452. It was identified by the Kepler space telescope and its discovery was publicly announced by NASA on 23 July 2015. It is the first near-Earth-size planet discovered orbiting within the habitable zone of a star very similar to the Sun. It is the fourth-most Earth-like exoplanet known to date.

The star is 1,400 light-years away from the Solar System; at the speed of the New Horizons spacecraft, about 58,536 km/h (36,373 mph), it would take approximately 25.8 million years to get there.

The planet takes 385 days to orbit its star. It is older and bigger than Earth, but lies within the conservative habitable zone of its parent star.

It has a probable mass five times that of Earth, and its surface gravity is twice Earth's, though calculations of mass for exoplanets are only rough estimates. If it is a terrestrial planet, it is most likely a super-Earth with many active volcanoes due to its higher mass and density. The clouds on the planet would be thick and misty, covering much of the surface as viewed from space. Kepler-452 would look almost identical to the Sun as viewed from the surface.

It is not known if Kepler-452b is a rocky planet or a small gas planet, but based on its small radius, Kepler-452b has a reasonable chance, between 49% and 62%, of being rocky. It is not clear if Kepler-452b offers habitable environments. It orbits a G2V-type star, like the Sun, with nearly the same temperature and mass and 20% more luminous. However, the star is six billion years old, making it 1.5 billion years older than the Sun. At this point in its star's evolution, Kepler-452b is receiving 10% more energy from its parent star than Earth is currently receiving from the Sun.^[4] If Kepler-452b is a rocky planet, it may be subject to a runaway greenhouse effect similar to that seen on Venus.

Help Wanted: 11 million college grads

This spring more than 2 million students across the US are doing something I’ve never done. They’re graduating from college.

That’s an achievement we should all celebrate. Although I dropped out of college and got lucky pursuing a career in software, getting a degree is a much surer path to success.

College graduates are more likely to find a rewarding job, earn higher income, and even, evidence shows, live healthier lives than if they didn’t have degrees. They also bring training and skills into America’s workforce, helping our economy grow and stay competitive. That benefits everyone.

It’s just too bad that we’re not producing more of them.

As the class of 2015 prepares to join the workforce, what many people may not realize is that America is facing a shortage of college graduates.

That may not seem possible, especially for any graduate who is unemployed or underemployed. But here are the numbers: By 2025, two thirds of all jobs in the US will require education beyond high school. (That includes two-year and four-year college degrees as well as postsecondary certificates.) At the current rate the US is producing college graduates, however, the country is expected to face a shortfall of 11 million skilled workers to fill those roles over the next 10 years, according to a new study by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce.

I’ve had a couple chances to talk about this skills gap with Cheryl Hyman, the chancellor of the City Colleges of Chicago. We first met over dinner with a number of education leaders last year, and I was really impressed with her accomplishments. Raised in poverty in Chicago’s housing projects, she got a college degree in computer science, worked her way to the top of a Fortune 500 company, and is now one of the most innovative leaders in higher education. Since taking the job in 2010, she’s doubled City Colleges’s graduation rate.

After our initial dinner, Cheryl kindly agreed to come out to my office so we could continue the conversation:

One thing Cheryl and I talked a lot about is the key source of the skills gap. The problem isn’t that not enough people are going to college. (Enrollment in postsecondary programs has grown by over 50 percent during the last 25 years.) The problem is that not enough people are finishing. More than 36 million Americans—a fifth of the working age population—have gone off to college and left without a degree.

It’s always moving to sit down with students and hear the stories of why they decided to drop out. Many of them are poor and often the first person in their families to go to college. They arrive on campus with big aspirations to get a degree and start a career that would earn a good salary. Then their dreams unravel.

Many quit when they realize that their high schools didn’t prepare them academically for college. Some don’t make it because they can’t afford tuition. Others leave after getting overwhelmed trying to navigate the college system without enough personal guidance from their college. All leave school with a lot of debt and, even worse, a diminished sense of themselves. Their entire sense of what they can achieve in life is damaged.

The fact that a high percentage of people who don’t finish college are from low-income backgrounds should be a concern for all of us. Without degrees, they are more likely to stay trapped in poverty. At the same time, the scarcity of skilled workers in the labor market drives up wages for those with a college education, worsening income inequality in America.

At our foundation, we are working with college leaders, including Chancellor Hyman, to transform the college experience to make it easier for students—especially low income and first-generation students—to stay in school and complete degrees at an affordable price.

Cheryl and I discussed the need for colleges to create a less confusing course selection process. Students often waste time and valuable credit hours taking classes that don’t help them progress toward graduation because they don’t understand the degree requirements. New personalized online guidance tools provide students with clear, semester-by-semester maps to graduation and a career.

I’ve written before about how online courses are helping reduce tuition costs for college students and give them the flexibility to learn on their own schedule. While I’m enthusiastic about the future of online courses, I also agree with Cheryl that they’re not, as she put it, a “magic bullet” that works for all students. Some of her students, she told me, still need face to face time with instructors and classmates to help them learn how to interact with other people and work as part of a team. Critical skills nearly all employers look for in new hires.

While all of these efforts are important to close the skills gap, Cheryl says the biggest issue is changing the culture of higher education. For many years colleges measured success by how many students enrolled in their institutions and not whether they were training students for jobs that were in demand in the marketplace. “We’ve taken our eye off the goal. I think we’ve been divorced from the real world for far too long,” she said.

It’s time for higher education and the “real world” of employers to start working together to meet the demand for 11 million skilled workers in the US. If we’re successful over the next decade, we’ll do more than close the skills gap. We’ll also make progress reducing the large and growing gap between America’s rich and poor.

Nobody is going to see New Horizons fly through the Pluto system. At least, not in real time. But thanks to the power of planetary physics you can watch the space probe pass by on your computer right now. NASA’s awesome visualization team has loaded the flight plan into their Eyes On The Solar System app.

On Tuesday, NASA's New Horizons spacecraft will sweep past Pluto and present the previously unexplored world in all its icy glory.
It promises to be the biggest planetary unveiling in a quarter-century. The curtain hasn't been pulled back like this since NASA's Voyager 2 shed light on Neptune in 1989.Now it's little Pluto's turn to shine way out on the frigid fringes of our solar system.

Astronomy enthusiasts fear losing access to Mauna Kea permanently

Two weeks ago, protestors heaved boulders and rocks onto the Mauna Kea Observatory Road in the latest attempt to halt construction on the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT), which will some day become the world’s largest. That prompted government officials to close the road off to the public entirely, including the tourists and amateur astronomers who frequent the mountain for its pristine dark skies. No one other than astronomers and construction crews has been allowed up since.

Tour companies say that’s already hurt their bottom line. Such operations bring tens of thousands of visitors up the mountain every year for sunset and stargazing tours. Pat Wright, president and owner of Mauna Kea Summit Adventures, told Hawaii News Now that his company has been offering such tours of the summit for the last 32 years at a cost of $212 a head. But business has plummeted since the road closure.

“Since that time we have been generating about one-third of the revenue that we normally generate, but almost 100 percent of the same costs," Wright told the local news station.

And they’re not the only night owls on the mountain. Each month around New Moon, amateur astronomers set up their personal telescopes outside the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station. The visitor center runs its instruments until 10 p.m., but amateurs often will keep their own telescopes out until dawn. It’s website says the center is closed “indefinitely.” Andrew Cooper, an amateur astronomer who lives in Hawaii and runs the blog “A Darker View,” says enthusiasts also set up their telescopes away from the visitor center.

Both user groups are now concerned this change will become permanent.

Today, Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will consider a hunting rule change that would restrict nighttime access to the mountain in an effort apparently aimed at protestors. The new rules state:

For the two dozenth episode of Crash Course Astronomy, we have to take a step away from the straight astronomy stuff and talk a little bit about light. After all, pretty much everything we know about the Universe is information sent via electromagnetic radiation, and as we press on into the cosmos we’ll need to know something about how it works.You probably don’t think much about light, but holy wow
does it store a lot of information into teeny little photons. This is a part of astronomy, of science, that reaches into my brain and tickles my mind; we see objects so far away that just the numbers describing their distance seem huge beyond imagining, yet that trickle of light tells us what those objects are, how far they are, what they’re made of, how hot they are, how rapidly they’re moving, whether and how fast they’re rotating, how strong any magnetic field they might have is, even giving us hints of the existence of things we can’t see. And even then, there’s still so much more.

If I were of the anthropomorphizing type, I’d say the Universe was desperately trying to tell us as much about it as it can. It’s just the consequence of the laws of physics, of course, but that removes none of the wonder or majesty of what we can learn. The Universe may not care what we know, but we do.
