T.O.B.Y. Homes-Cool Week 24

This week passed so quickly! It has been quit nice, temps in the high 70's.
Not wintery like at all... however, I think it is going to be getting cold again over the weekend.
I do enjoy schooling by the fireplace, though we haven't been able to do that much this winter.

Here is what we have been up to...

Torah

This week we are in the parsha, "Bo", translated as "Go" or "Come".
In this portion we read about the last three plagues on Egypt and the first Pesach.

Both the parsha and the haftarah describe Yah’s judgment against Egypt. The parsha reports that Yah told Moshe to go (bo’) to Pharaoh (Exodus 10:1); the haftarah reports Yah’s word that Nebuchadrezzar would come (la-vo’) to Pharaoh. (Jeremiah 46:13.) Both the parshah and the haftarah report a plague of locusts — literal in the parsha, figurative in the haftarah. (Exodus 10:3–20; Jeremiah 46:23.) Both the parsha and the haftarah report Yah's punishment of Egypt’s gods. (Exodus 12:12; Jeremiah 46:25.) And both the parshah and the haftarah report Yah’s ultimate deliverance of the Israelites from their captivity. Oh, what a blessed promise!

One of the activties the children did this week was this little puzzle of plagues in Hebrew...

History of Medicine

This week Halea learned about William Morton and Charles Jackson. Jackson actually tutored Morton. Fighting over the rights to who actually invented anesthetic, both met a tragic end to their lives. This was actually quit sad, as these two men rivaled against each other until their anger led to death. As the account goes, Morton was riding in a carriage one day, and happened upon a newspaper article, favoring Jackson.

In a fit of rage, he fell unconscious, suffered a stroke and never recovered. He died a few days later. Morton is credited as the inventor of anesthetic inhalation. He also coined the phrase, "Your patient is ready, doctor." The statement made after the anesthetic has taken effect, and the patient is asleep.
Filled with jealousy, at the sight of Morton's tombstone, Jackson's jealousy drove him to insanity! He spent the rest of his life in an insane asylum.

Craft Time

This week our art came in the form of SHARKS! oh my... =)

The children made a mobile of sharks.

First I printed out the sharks, then they researched what each shark looks like. After carefully coloring them, we cut them out, and stuffed with cotton balls to give them depth. Then I attached them to two crossed kebobs, and it was ready for hanging.

P.E.

Our CO-OP just started a new P.E. class. As a part of the homework, the children are to keep track of their efforts to exercise for at least 15 minutes a day. They have done well, and Halea especially has peaked interest in working out, on purpose =)

Creation Study

This week Jacob had a writing prompt about sharks. More specifically, he had to write a story from a sharks point of view. This opened up to us a Creation Study, based on his desire to learn more about sharks.

This also was a good opportunity to practice researching skills. Out of his desire, the other children became interested as well. This is usually how a "unit study" is birthed in our home =)

T.O.B.Y. Homes-Cool Week 23

Well, another week has passed. How was yours? We had lots of learning this week!

Here is what we have been up to...

Torah

This week we are in the parsha, Va'era, translated as "I appeared".
This week's Torah portion continues the story of the struggle to leave Egypt. The name for the portion comes from its second verse which reads: Va'era el Avraham el Yitzhak v'el Ya;akov...I appeared to Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob...Exodus 6:3).

In this portion, we see the direct experience of Yah's awesome power and glory. We see the first seven plagues, and Pharaoh's heart that continues to harden.

The boys also enjoyed acting out the plagues, using laminated plague puppets... they took turns being Moshe and pharaoh...

It states:

I revealed Myself to Avraham, Yitzhak and Ya'akov as (El Shaddai), and did not allow them to know Me by My name YHWH.

We also started our Hebrew Alef-bet Lapbook =)
This week we are focusing on the alef-bet mini-books, and the animals that go along with each letter.

History

One of the things we learned more about this week included history surrounding Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Halea did a few document based activities, including: The Montgomery Bus Boycott, Brown v. Board of Education, and Woolworth's lunch Counter Sit-In 1960.

Noah learned about the history of the "holiday" and the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

And Jacob focused on what desegregation meant, both physically and emotionally. He read an account of a young girl from the era. Both boys did a bus craft, and united in love craft =)

We also watched Martin Luther King Jr. on NBC's Meet the Press, 1965

History of Medicine

This week Halea learned about Humphry Davy, who worked in one of the first pneumatic hospitals. His experience with using gases for medicine would lead him to search for a better "painkiller." Did you know in the late 1700's a surgeons skill was measured by how quickly he worked, not by how well he did the job! A British surgeon routinely took of a leg in a minute or less!

Halea also learned about the doctor, Sir James Young Simpson. He justified the use of anesthesia based on his understanding of Scripture, found in Bereshit/ Genesis 2:21.

Art

This week the children started a course of "sketching"... Here are few highlights from their lessons:

First they reviewed need supplies...

BTW, that framing device is made out of 2 pieces of cardboard! It does not have to be expensive =)

They also learned that masking tape is better than a clip, so that you can easily move your paper around.

And the sandpaper can be used to sharpen the lead of your pencil, or to make it "blunter".

They learned about different weight pencils and how they create different shades, lines and the overall look of the sketch.

Next they learned about different hand positions...

Then they experimented =)

FIAR

This week Noah worked on The Snowy Day.

After he read the book, he worked on his lapbook =)

Because we live in the sunshine state, he was unable to play in the snow... but we did do a couple of activities with our version of "snow"...

The boys made snowballs out of shaved ice, build a "snowman", and then...

A "Snow"ball fight =)

Then all the children enjoyed a "snow" cone...

And he made foot tracks in the "snow"... aka shaving cream =)

we made Borax Crystal Snowflakes...

and pencil top snowmen!

On a different note, Jacob is plugging along with his multiplication, and used the thesaurus for the first time!

You did a very good job in school this week! Great job =) Indubitably!
All in all, it has been a very productive school week! And tomorrow is prep day! YaY =)

FIAR: The Snowy Day

This week Noah worked on The Snowy Day.

This story involves a young boy’s experience on a very
snowy day. The magic and wonder of a lovely snowfall,
as seen through the eyes of a child, is conveyed as
we watch young Peter explore and enjoy the snow. As
the day progresses, we find Peter finding new ways to
enjoy the snow that has piled up all over the city
streets.
Toward the end of the story, we find Peter saddened
because the snowball he brought home in his pocket
has disappeared. However, when Peter awakes the next
morning, he discovers that the snow outdoors has now
disappeared, and he calls to his friend across the hall to
join him for another day of fun in the snow.

After he read the book, he worked on his lapbook =) He really enjoyed the book online as well. He played it several times a day, all week! He likes how each word lights up as it was being read...

A "Snow"ball fight =)

Then all the children enjoyed a "snow" cone...

The boys tried to make foot tracks in the "snow"... aka shaving cream =) It was very slippery,
and the bag wanted to stick to their shoes... although they thoroughly enjoyed the activity =)

We also made Borax Crystal Snowflakes...

I had to run all over town to find the borax... also known as 20 mule team! FYI =)
I do not use it in the laundry, so I was not familiar with it. This craft was fairly simple to do, though it did take time and a little patience...

after creating their snowflakes, the boys had to wait patiently overnight so that the borax had enough time to form the crystals on their snowflakes.
Look how pretty they are above the mantle =)

The boys also made pencil top snowmen!

These were made out of Styrofoam balls, scrap material and glitter glue. SO cute =)

The last time Noah saw snow was at age 3, when we were visiting family in the mid-west... This was a fun little row. I especially liked the snowball fight. It reminded me of when I was little with my brother and sister...

Growing up in Kansas, we would get snow drifts over the back door, and my daddy would make tunnels in the snow for us to play in...

My mom would dress us soooo warmly, and because we had no snow boots, we would wear several bread bags rubberbanded, over our shoes, in their "proper" place.

This time, I was the observer... Still fairly warm, yet no bread sacks on my shoes, or their little feet =)

Wisdom in view...

A discerning man keeps wisdom in view, but a fool's eyes wander to the ends of the earth. ~Mishle/ Proverbs 17:24

The particular Hebrew word translated as "discerning" in the verse is very common in the Tanak. It has the idea of considering a situation carefully, studying all the options, pondering possible courses of action, and then choosing the best course. By contrast, a fool pays no attention to anything around him but blithely lets his mind wander, and so stumbles from one predicament to another.

Abba, please, continue to teach me... I sing of Your mercy and Your patience.

Your enduring love... Help me to be discerning... in it's truest form...

Let me not be a fool... but a woman who's heart continually searches Yours...
