Most of my friends' and family members' birthdays pass me by without me even knowing. Facebook is helpful, but you still have to be paying attention. I know I could set up some sort of reminder but I just haven't gotten around to it.<br /> <br /> Like my tendency to end sentences with prepositions, this is not a quality I'm proud of. &nbsp;Sometimes I think I'm a pretty selfish person deep down. Or maybe 'self-centered' is a better word. Recently, I neglected to remember the birthday of one of my only friends in Wilmington. And his birthday is even embedded in his email address. Also, I'm pretty sure that I attended Vikki's birthday party, and posted a birthday post for Sarah, but MAY have completely forgotten my good buddy Matt's birthday. Or maybe I didn't. I honestly don't know, because I'm so self-centered.<br /> <br /> In any event, Matt, you are truly an awesome person and friend and I'm glad as shit that I met you. &nbsp;No sarcasm or anything following that statement. As you may know, every so often I have to delve into the gargantuan postal department here in the Muck to look through the various correspondence from our vast readership. It's cold here, a little lonley, the world of tweets, blogs, and face book updates seems a long long way a way from these hallowed depths I can tell you.<br /><br />Anywho, if you'll cast your memories back to the 2007, you may remember I brought you news on the <a href="http://notesfromthemuck.blogspot.com/2007/06/winner.html">hot dog speed eating contest</a>, in particular, the plight of one man, Kobayashi, who finished second. Many of you wrote in to see what had happened to this tragic hero, whether he had gone on to take the covetted title<br /><br />Well people, I can tell you that things have not <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/us_and_canada/10504627.stm">panned out so smoothly for our wiener chomping chum.</a> He managed to get himself arrested for trying to partake in an eating competition he was not registered for. That, in itself, is cause for a tear or two. However, looking at the reason he was not registered, I was horrified to see that there is a Federation for these freaks of nature, named <a href="http://www.ifoce.com/index.php">Major League Eating</a>. Think how many people this employs. Wonder that this is not the only body of its kind, and that Kobayashi did not want to sign with them as if he did so then they would prohibit him, BAN him, from entering other competitions.<br /><br />Also something to ponder is the chant that went up from the crowd when Kobayashi, "The Tsunami", tried to take the stage illegally, "Let him eat, let him eat!!!". I imagine Kabayashi's chest puffing with pride, his eyes filling with tears, and his heart brimming with righteous indignation as the words emboldened his pasion and cause. Far be it for me to judge, but perhaps they would've been better off saying something like "Hey, dude, it's been like, 9 years since you won this thing. Leave it to that nerdlinger "Joey Jaws". Run free while you're still young." Not a howl of anguish as it slowly sinks beneath the waves it once conquered? Who's to deny that every day has it's night, not I, but every night has a dawn, and though this night has been particularly long and still, the light was always coming, even when it had faded from the last commentor's memory, it burned on, deep in the heaving hulking core of the muck, whose shell was cool and to all intents and purposes, lifeless to the touch.<br /><br />The muck lives on, will live on, because too much exists in it. And also I need somewhere to post about animals dying and shit.<br /><br />Anywho, did anyone bother watching Lost? The finale? Because I did. I sat through season 6 and was nonplussed. Maybe that's because I watched it on a laptop but still. I think I spent a lot of it wishing that they would just get lost in the jungle. All the way i thought I should be clearer on the story, clearer of what needed to be resolved aside from everything. I actually liked how they did the MAJORITY of the episodes in that I think the thing they did most was build believable characters that you maybe didn't care about what you wanted to see what happened to them. Secondary to this, for me, was the story of the island, and I do feel the resolution of the character's story was more important and more worthwhile.<br /><br />However. I did NOT like the final explanation. They are all dead and now they are going to heaven. Bull. Shit. Cop. Out. Sweet Jesus, 6 years and they really thought that was an acceptable way to end the show? Don't get me wrong, I liked Jack and Flocke's face off, and the final seen with Vincent and Jack was done well but where do they get off cheating us like that? Yes, cheating us. There's no other word for it. Despicable. And yes, maybe I just need to let go of Lost, and I always knew it would end. But forgive me for seeking something more than what they gave us. Something that was bold, that suprised us but that if we re watched the series from beginning to end would make sense. Something that challenged and comforted? It crashed into a ditch so many times that it lost a wheel and part of the propeller. I have to buy some replacement parts before I can try it again.<br /><br />Aside from that, I have continued to watch movies that meant a lot to me at one point or another. I watched A Nightmare on Elm Street, which was the first real horror movie I saw. I was about 6 or 7 years old, and it scared the crap out of me. In addition, I watched the Blu-ray disc of 2001: A Space Odyssey. 2001 was the first Stanley Kubrick movie I saw. I was about 14 years old, and it blew my mind. It continues to do so. Although, after all these years, I think I formed the opinion that the final segment is a deeply flawed conclusion to an otherwise brilliant film. Kubrick ran out of time and money when he was finishing the movie, and I'm convinced that the ending we know is not the ending he would have preferred if he had been able to continue. In any case, it looks fantastic in HD.<br /><br />I think that's it.
