Hello from the city centre

My name is Sue Beattie and I am part of the City Centre Neighbourhood Team which I recently joined after working as part of 24/7 policing in various places in Newcastle.

My duties include covering taxi issues and youth anti-social behaviour in Old Eldon Square and around the Monument. I have spoken to some of the cafe/restaurant owners in this area and listened to any worries or problems that they may have. I have given them advice and introduced them to the shop/pub watch system which enables them to contact the Police Camera Operator if they wish to point out anything that they are unhappy with.

I also look at preventing cycle thefts within the city centre. In relation to this I have been involved in some operations where offenders have been arrested. A lot of bicycle thefts could be avoided if the owner took more precautions when leaving their bicycle in the town, and I know that one of my colleagues has been offering members of the public advice regarding this so that they can reduce the likelihood of being targeted.

On the beat in the city centre

I am Alan Lumsden and my primary area of responsibility within the City Centre is the Grainger Market. I am currently working closely with the markets and retail team to identify any problems of crime and disorder witch may affect the daily running of the market.

Within the market, police recently ran an operation which incorporated plain clothed and high visibility patrols to reduce both crime and anti-social behaviour incidents. This was deemed a major success from a policing perspective as well as by the markets team and traders.

Both anti-social incidents and crime have reduced over the last year due to the installation of a new CCTV system which is greatly assisted police with enquiries leading to a number of prosecutions.

The Grainger Market is a very safe place to shop and crime is low but if there are any issues you would like to discuss, feel free to contact the Newcastle City Centre Team and we will do everything we can to help.

Over the past couple of weeks I have been focusing my attention on providing a high-visibility presence in and around the Monument area. The Monument is nominally the centre-point for the City Centre and a hub for activity so the passing footfall is very large.

As we are approaching the festive season we tend to see an increase in the amount of shoplifting and related anti-social behaviour.

Highly visible patrols are an effective way of showing the would-be thieves that we know what they're up to and that we're watching.

However, it also has a duel purpose. I find standing on the Monument increases my interaction with the general public massively, not only in general chat and finding out peoples concerns, but giving out LOTS of directions!

These types of patrols allow me to provide a crime prevention service and an engagement service at one time, providing value for my time.

As Christmas approaches more officers will be providing these types of duel patrols. If you see me or any of my colleagues out and about, please don't hesitate to stop us for a chat!
