A robot will teach coding to kids

A robot has been developed to teach kids of all ages the coding.

The robot named Root looks just like a smoke detector but is actually a sophisticated robot. A magnetic surface, wheels, and an impressive arsenal of sensors allow it to navigate a classroom whiteboard. But Root isn't actually programed to do anything. Its tasks and functionality lies on a child's imagination.

The robot is capable of driving and drawing as well as playing music, but Root needs instructions to operate, a line of code. Zivthan Dubrovsky of Harvard's Wyss Institute recalls testing out Root with kids for the first time.

Using a tablet connected wirelessly to the robot, level one introduces kids to the principles of programing using an interface of simple commands and pictures. As they become more adept, they jump to levels 2 and 3, at which point writing computer code becomes second nature, according to Dubrovsky.

The team hopes to partner up with education companies to develop curriculums based around Root with the hopes of enticing schools to add the robot to classrooms.

"By adding a robot into the classroom you are actually adding a third agent into the classroom and you enable a new interesting way of teaching where the students can become the teachers, teaching the robot to do things," Dubrovsky said. While at the same time learning a new skill, one that is increasingly important in a digital world where knowing how to code could become just as important as knowing to read and write.

Sniffer dogs team set up at a British airport with a cost of 1.25 million pounds have proved that they are good at discovering small amounts of cheese and sausages but not so good at finding smuggled drugs.

In an inspection of border security at Manchester Airport in northern England, It was found that during a seven-month period, the six dogs had failed to find any illegal and dangerous Class A drugs such as drugs such as heroin or cocaine.

According to a report by the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration, this represented a low return on investment, given 1.25 million spent on new kennels and the costs of operating the unit.

Each dog has its own specialty in detecting goods such as drugs, tobacco, cash and meat being illegally brought into the airport by the 22 million passengers who use it annually.

However the report found that although the sniffers had helped customs seize 46 kg of cigarettes and 181 kg of meat, they had uncovered no class A drugs between November 2014 and June 2015 even though this was a "very high" priority.

It said one dog trained to find smuggled animal products had made "multiple accurate detections, but most were of small amounts of cheese or sausages, wrongly brought back by returning British holidaymakers and posing minimal risk to UK public health".

Managers are now examining how better to deploy the dogs, the report said.

They are just as deserving and just as intelligent," he said. Theakston added that he had been surprised by each dog's ability to show empathy, despite the difficult circumstances they had grown up in. "Even if a dog has been deprived of human contact or has been badly treated, it is just as able and motivated to initiate a new relationship with a human very quickly." Stanley Coren, professor of canine psychology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, was not convinced the dogs would be able to manage the challenge. "Given that we would not expect a human three-year-old to be able to fly a plane, I would not expect that a dog could do so either," he told The Independent.

A Machine called ‘Foodini’ that prints eatables

Are you hungry and there is no food? Just take a print out and eat it. Yes it is possible; you can now just print your favorite dishes like pizzas and burgers. You can also print far from the machine through your mobile. A newly startup company from Barcelona in Spain, called Natural Machine, came up with a new 3D printer Foodini that can print eatables. Lynette kucsma, co-founder of the company says that the machine called as Foodini uses the same technology as that of a 3D printer, and deploys edible ingredients squeezed out of stainless steel capsules instead of plastics. It was due to the single melting point of the plastics and whereas with food it was different temperatures and textures. The price of the Foodini will be quite high. Foodini is priced at around 1000 dollars. It has been described as a mini food manufacturing plant with the size shrunken down to the size of an oven. It can print a wide range of dishes, from sweet to savory. There will be a touch screen connected to a recipe site in the cloud and users would also be able to control the device remotely using a smartphone, and share their recipes with the community. The company reported that they had tested the machine and the food prepared by the machine was liked by everyone. If you are eager to buy this exciting machine you have to wait few days. The machine initially was targeted for professional kitchens and it announced that soon the consumer version will be introduced. The Foodini machine would be available in the market in mid-2015.

Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was born on 27 March 1845. He was a German physicist who won the first Nobel Prize in Physics for his extraordinary services he has rendered by the discovery of the remarkable Röntgen rays or X-rays. On 8 November 1895, he produced and detected electromagnetic radiation in a wavelength range today that was known as X-rays or Röntgen rays. In 2004 the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) named after him the element 111, roentgenium, a radioactive element with multiple unstable isotopes in his honor. He died on 10 February 1923 from carcinoma of the intestine.

Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff:

Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff was a Dutch physical and organic chemist born on 30 August 1852 at Rotterdam in Netherlands. He was the first winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on the discovery of the laws of chemical dynamics and osmotic pressure in solutions. From young age he was interested in science and actively part in botanical excursions. He is best known for his discoveries in chemical kinetics, osmotic pressure, chemical equilibrium, and stereochemistry. The work of Van 't Hoff in these subjects help found the discipline of physical chemistry as it is today. Van ‘t off died on 1 March 1911 suffering from tuberculosis.

Emil Adolf von Behring:

Emil Adolf von Behring was born on 15 March 1854 in Hansdorf the present Lawice in Province of Prussia now Poland. He was a German physiologist who received the Prize in Physiology or Medicine, for his discovery of a diphtheria antitoxin. Thereby he opened new doors in medicine. At that time diphtheria was a major cause of death of many children. He was widely known as a "savior of children" for his discovery. He was died on 31 March 1917 at Marburg in Hessen-Nassau.

Sully Prudhomme born on 16 March 1839 in Paris was a French poet and littérateur, and was the first ever winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, in 1901 for his poetic composition, which gives evidence of elevated idealism, artistic perfection. He originally studied to be an engineer but turned out to philosophy and later to poetry. He declared it as his intent to create scientific poetry for modern times. He was sincere and melancholic, his work displays characteristics of its own. He died suddenly on 6 September 1907 due to his poor health suffering attacks of paralysis.

Henry Dunant:

Jean Henri Dunant also known as Henry Dunant was born on 8 May 1828 in Geneva to a businessman. In 1901 he received the first Nobel Peace Prize together with Frédéric Passy. His father and Mother were active in helping orphan, sick and the poor. Dunant was a Swiss businessman and social activist. During a business trip in 1859, he was witnessed consequences of the Battle of Solferino in the present Italy. He recorded his memories and experiences in a book “A Memory of Solferino”. It inspired the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1863.

Frédéric Passy:

Frédéric Passy was born in Paris on May 20, 1822 to a veteran of Waterloo, Felix Passy. He was a French economist and a joint winner first Nobel Peace Prize 1901 along with Henry Dunant. He became a professional economist in 1857. His reputation was established through his “Mélanges économiques” in 1857, essays and a lecture series given at the University of Montpellier. He became a member of the French “Académie des sciences morales et politiques” in 1877. He was died on June 12, 1912.
