Hello. Am dropping these lines just to say I'm still alive, and happy holidays! If you knew me, you'd know I'm not really a fan of bright twinkling lights, or of loud show music. I prefer soft and sparse, just enough for warmth.

I'm visibly thinner, hopefully wiser, after the six months since my last post on this blog. Don't worry, I'll tell you all about it soon enough. Let's just say I've learned to celebrate what needs celebrating.

A day before July

Today could be just like any other day, no different from a day before January or September. But today, I will be submitting English translations for my last posts on my Benetton blog — well at least for this year. Been writing for them for three years already. Now it may be time again to find my own voice, maybe through another blog. How does Bosquejo Viaje sound to you?

Today is also a few days before my colleague, friend, designer (Bosquejo website and calling card), and ever-reliable photographer Trish will be leaving the country to begin a new life. Remember all my cameos in random places in Makati? That was her.

So how am I this last day of June, a seemingly normal day before July? Was promoted at work, but just also settled part of a huge phone bill followed by a stressful argument with Globe agents. Enjoyed The Amazing Spider-man last night, but right now all I need is stillness and quiet.
Things are a mix, just like this mismatched pair of Doc Martens. Only noticed when I got home that the faux croc patterns were different, but decided to keep the confused pair.
I'm still writing poetry, will make more accessories soon, and am very excited to plan travels around the country not only to take pictures but also to take everything in: to see with clear eyes and burn visions on paper.

Funny how people talk behind your back when they know you'll hear about it anyway. All these silly murmurings in the dark made by scared little animals.

Though I've been absent from many of the circles I used to move in, I still know what's happening.

But enough of that. Let's talk about this last shoot for the first part of my collaboration with Myth. Again the outfit is for the office (where rumors grow like mold, and loyalties have no real roots).

Sometimes I think office politics is as bad as the country's, but at least the former set-up allows for more grown-up experimentation with clothes, ie entering into roles. (What does "smart casual" say about you?)

The workplace can be dead boring, unless you find what's interesting in it, and you keep close to colleagues who are not only competent, but are also fun to be with.

5 days, 5 ways: Francis Libiran x Myth, part 1 day 4

I thought the weekend would never arrive! So here's a post shot in an apartment in the afternoon, one of my favorite parts of the day.

All I need is some quiet and a book.

As you've noticed, I just switched the shirt and the pullover from the last post, wearing the striped jumper inside. As some of you may have noticed, I've grown fond of wearing them inside short-sleeved shirts.

Lately, I've wanted to do so many things during the weekend, that I end up doing nothing. Well, not really: rest and reading and writing are really my priorities.

Saturday and Sunday just feel so incredibly liberating. To be finally able to do what I really want during the short weekly respite! Any well laid-out plan becomes irrelevant.

Of course, regret comes after. That is why I am now rushing to finish this post so I will be able to drop by at a few events tonight.

After all, rest and reading and writing are all done anyway in pockets across the week. I just hope every weekend proves to be more productive.

Because I have a day job that has a dress code, it only makes sense that I suggest officewear options for this shirt. Matched the gray checkered portion on the sleeves with similarly colored trousers.

Many of you may know just how much I love jackets, cardigans, and pullovers, but I have decided to mostly pass on them for these outfits so that the sleeve pattern shows. Hence, I wore this pullover as a scarf instead.

Of course, officewear doesn't have to be all drab and boring.

We may take them for granted, but vertical creases on pants make them more interesting.

Seems hard to imagine it was this sunny last weekend after yesterday's and today's onslaught of rain. It is June after all, and almost mid-month!

At least it won't be as difficult to wear denim, as shirts and even jackets.

Spent last Saturday shooting this cute charcoal gray short-sleeved shirt by Francis Libiran for Myth. As the title suggests, I styled it for five different outfits. Initially you'd think this piece would only be good for the office but this first ensemble is just right for the weekend, or a holiday such as tomorrow.
You might be interested to read a short post on Myth, a boutique in Greenbelt 5, I wrote for my Benetton blog.

I like this shade of gray, especially when mixed with white and blue. The subtle segments and the checkered pattern on the sleeves make the piece sufficiently interesting. Not to mention easier to mix and match!

There are days (almost every day nowadays) that the only sensible things to wear are shorts (which I need more of). Short-sleeved shirts are easy solutions for those who want to stay a little dressy.

Happy birthday, United Blogs of Benetton!

Had fun taking these photos for the first birthday of United Blogs of Benetton. An aunt said they reminded her of the Pixar movie Up.

My photographer apparently likes to take candid photos (read: when I am totally not ready, haha). I still remember the first time I blogged for United Colors of Benetton. It was for the IT'S MY TIME Global Casting campaign in 2010. We were just a handful of bloggers then, but after two years (and the evolution of the Benetton blog) our family has expanded to sixteen.

Together with Montaigne Street from France and Botica Pop from Mexico, I am the only blogger left from the original group. Magali, who was the campaign model from France, now blogs as well. New faces came from Chile, Spain, Italy, Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, Peru, Portugal, Turkey, Russia, Columbia, Bulgaria, and China.

Slack and easy

Or lazy is more like it. Brought out these pleated slacks in my closet and wore them last Wednesday. Believe it or not, I've had them since high school.

Remember the nineties when trousers were all baggy? We were required to wear them at school, with long-sleeved shirts, whenever we had occasions like feast day masses. I guess my love for them stuck, now extended to drawstring and fisherman's pants.

Red-hot summer

I tried it on a couple of times, but I really don't think Tangerine Tango, Pantone's color of the year for 2012, agrees with me (not even plain orange). This is the best I can do: rusty red on Nantucket.

Vault magazine: Je ne sais quoi / On the streets of Paris

I wrote an article and styled five looks for the latest issue of Vault magazine (should be in the newsstands now or early next week). The issue is all about travel and my piece focusses on Parisian style.

I chose the title "Je ne sais quoi" because I thought that the style of men in the French capital is a bit hard to define in strict terms. Below is the first paragraph from the piece. Hope you can buy a copy so you can read it in its entirety.

"Of all the world’s fashion capitals, Paris is certainly the most distinct when it comes to style, and not just in terms of the clothes that come out on the runway but also what is seen on the street. But I do not know exactly what it is that’s different, much less what has made it so. The same way that chic cannot be defined: you just see it, and you know."

Striped linen

After taking almost a week off to cram for my Palanca entry (submitted last last Monday, good luck with that), I still have a hangover. Now nothing else feels as natural. I just want to write and write and write, even if there are no contests to join (which, mind you, happen to be good motivators for procrastinators like me). I guess this is how it feels to find oneself in one's element.

I still remember what a friend said when he was "trying" to read my palm years and years ago. He said that for me I always try to look at things in black and white, to make sense of them in clear terms. Not sure if he was just pulling my leg, but in a way he was right. I suppose light and shadow have a similar distinction, opaque and translucent, sheer and solid.
You will see less and less of me as I grow larger in your mind.

What's in My Bag, part V: mesh Benetton tote

Those who know me know that I always lug lots of stuff. One bag is never enough: I carry at least two, sometimes even three. Because cramming is my way of life, I always have my mobile in my hand. If I'm not checking or drafting emails, I am checking/updating my schedule or writing out a poem or finishing a blog post. That is why I need bags that hang from my shoulders, to keep my hands free (backpacks are not that practical for summer). Often my second bag is a tote.

What's inside? Most often my basic combination of books, magazines, and a notebook. Sometimes I carry my point and shoot instead of my heavy DSLR. That's why this new mesh tote by Benetton, in fresh summer colors, is perfect for my needs. (The belt is only there because it matches the tote.)

Sometimes I also toss my mobile into my tote, especially when the jeep is crowded and I can't return it inside my pocket. This knit case from Benetton fits my iPhone 4S just right.

So why, you ask, do I have to bring all these readings on a day-to-day basis? Simply because I don't like wasting time; I don't like idle waiting. But then again, I often catch myself pursuing a thought or being distracted by the outside world — too busy to bother with magazines and books.

Apologies for the way I look. This is how messy I get when I spend days on end doing nothing but writing. Good thing I even managed to shave.

The nitty-gritty

This was taken last week in another part of our untidy backyard. (Don't know why we still keep the old water containers, but thought they'd look good with polka dots.) The past few weeks have been about the details, as I have been trying to finally finish a series of poems that I have been writing for the past eight years. I have no more excuses. If I am to finish them, it should be soon.

Which is not to say that I am enjoying the process. I have finally accepted (A voice says: Are you sure? Another: Keep quiet; I'm trying to be decisive here.), after almost a decade of distractions, that this is my one enduring passion. As such, it occupies most of my time: filling my thoughts, inspiring ideas, giving me perspective. (It's also fun to be anonymous and absent.) Challenging me the most. This blog serves as a breather, a quick sidelong glance. (And the rest? Don't even ask.)

In this way － yes, wait for it － I guess my April Fool's "in a relationship" Facebook joke (considered serious in this day and age) was half-meant. I am tied to the dirt of the details.

My pen is not just my sword (sounds like a testament), it is my shovel (channeling Heaney) or as I would randomly put it: my pick-chisel-flashlight. But as of the moment, as I embark on an itinerary of memories and ideas, I most urgently need it as a walking stick.

The long and short of it

These were my Sunday shorts last weekend. Since I had to report to work for a few hours, I also wore a pullover, though not on top of my t-shirt but under.

Now the jumper is obviously in a larger size than the tee. That's why it flares a bit. A few more inches and it's good as a skirt. I love how it fools the eye. Of course, I like that it's shiny. And blue. And checkered.

Since I really don't do poses on this blog, I let my bag do it.

Got the leather duffel a long long time ago. Have to remind myself to use it more often. The bag and the sneakers make the look a little sporty.

After all, the bottom zipper is for shoes. Love this shade of wood (mahogany?). Though it is starting to crack again and needs to be reconditioned.

The top reminds me of brain coral. Makes me think of drawstring leather pants, or shorts.

Sadly, the American Boulevard store where I bought this pendant (Taft near DLSU) has long been closed. I love how small and sinister it looks. Almost like bared teeth.

This is antoher item I have had to fish out from my closet: Gucci sneakers designed when Tom Ford was still creative director. Even the thrift store I found these in has also ceased to exist.

As you can see, the leather laces have frayed and split in half. As it is next to impossible to find good leather here, I may need to ask bag/shoe designer friends for custom laces.

Good thing the embroidery is still intact. Do you remember the brightly colored silk jackets that were part of the same collection?

Not rust; dirt I think. That hairy design on the toes must be pineapples. The shoes are too nice to be called high-tops.

Say hello to my "new" DIY jeans. The jeans themselves are not new; last time I used them was in secondary school. How did I bleach them? Not with any kind of detergent. The vital ingredient is called Ondoy, internationally known as Ketsana.

Our house in Quezon City was flooded up to the second floor. The room my brother and I grew up in was downstairs. When we returned to survey the damage, I found my navy jeans a lighter shade of indigo, with patterns that remind me of leaves and hibiscus. Naturally, I paired them with another pattern: the Union Jack and British crests mixed into checks.

I'm tired of carrying my totes on my shoulders. Why not on my neck? Why not incorporate them into jackets via detachable fasteners and buttons?

What do you call this camouflage pattern? Only recently did I discover that just as leopard spots are different from cheetah markings, camo can come in many many patterns, such as lizard, lime, heck even scrambled egg. Quack quack.

Jeans, shoes, and sandalwood

Finally bought these navy Sebago docksides I've been eyeing for quite a while. Was a tiring day from the office and back at the stores for the third time (because idiot me forgot to jot down pullout prices).

When I thought things couldn't get worse, I discover that our house helper for more than two decades now washed my A.P.C. New Standards.

I could just go crazy. Yesterday the barber discovered a small bald spot while he was giving me a haircut. He said it was probably caused by stress. Now he sounds like a prophet.

So all that talk about washing your NS (yes, fans love their raw denim that much) only after at least six months or even a year or more in order to leave your own personal mark (stains, rips, and creases) is now gone. The jeans have shrunk and the thread is not the same — but without the benefit of any real wear. They just look old, a little like my navy Gap pair after six months of washing. (Though I was really also planning to get the Petite Standards. Then maybe I can compare methods...)

Talk about Mercury in Gatorade (my version). I swear I also had a similar string of disasters last year (should I now believe in astrology?), now replaced by my iPhone theft, my unbelievable phone bill, and the job I didn't get. Nowhere but up, right?

I forgot to show you the bottle I bought with the A.P.C.s: a fine fabric care solution for non-detergent washing, which containts lemon and cedarwood. Smells good and can also be used to wash wool (not that I have lots of that). Ironic?

But the real dilemma that has again tied me in knots is my first and real career, which is asking, entreating, demanding that I spend more time on it, ie at least four hours each day. Call it universal feng shui: all the bad things will stop happening once I let things flow properly. Aye, there's the rub.

Maybe I'll be gone a little longer, maybe I'll be back tomorrow. But know this, care of A.P.C., Aesop, and William Blake (see the bottle quote): "You never know what is enough unless you know what is more than enough." Or from me: "Better out of sight and out of mind than out of my mind".

Yes, that is actual dog hair on my Iceberg sweater. (Am always playing with our dogs.) Now that I'm looking at it again, I think that's Pluto and not Goofy. What do you think?

Iceberg became famous in the 90s for its Disney sweaters. Though the last time I saw cartoon characters on their clothes was for their Spring 2009 collection. As this sweater says, it is part of history.

I still fall on these 2.5-inch platforms. Not practical, but I love how they look.
