Make Sure You’re Insured

Are you prepared if something were to happen to your trailer or load? Are you willing to risk not having ample insurance?

Make sure you know whether or not your current auto insurance will cover damage to your trailer and its contents—it’s worth the time to find out about your insurance before you need it.

Liability Insurance - Your existing auto insurance is sufficient if you’re not worried about your trailer or its contents. If something was to happen and anyone or anything was damaged by you or your trailer while you’re on the road, the liability portion of your auto insurance policy should cover the damage. If something would happen to your trailer while at home, your standard home insurance policy should cover any damage or injury. But just to be on the safe side, check with your insurance agent.

Collision, Theft, and Vandalism Insurance – Your home/property insurance and auto liability insurance may be fine for most of your needs, but you can buy additional coverage meant expressly for your trailer and its contents.

NOTE: If you finance a new trailer, many banks and finance companies require that you have a separate policy for the trailer before the paperwork is completed.

Buying Additional Insurance - Insuring your trailer is generally done as an add-on to either your auto insurance or home insurance policy. You can also purchase a stand-alone policy, depending on your needs.

No matter what type of insurance you acquire, make sure you understand the details of your policy, and whether it includes the cargo you’re carrying, or just the trailer in case of collision or theft.

Keep Your Trailer Clean

Manure, dirt, and urine can eat away at a trailer’s floorboards, walls, and metal. Keeping your trailer clean, even while you’re on the road, is one of the best ways to reduce the chance of costly problems later.

These 9 tips will help you keep your trailer interior clean—and ready to roll:

Open the trailer doors, windows, and vents to help air out and dry the trailer after cleaning.
Remove all bedding and hay. This prevents mice and other vermin from moving in for an unwelcome stay.
Take out the trailer mats. This prevents dirt and moisture from getting trapped underneath them.
Sweep the trailer floor and ramp. Make sure you clean along the bottom of the walls and in the corners.
Use a wire brush on spots that won’t come clean with a broom. Pay close attention to the seams and corners.
Clean the walls and mats with water. Spray until any visible manure or urine reside is gone.
Occasionally (depending on how often you use the trailer) wash the interior walls and floor with diluted dishwashing liquid or a commercial cleaner.
Let the inside of the trailer dry completely before replacing the mats. If the trailer is not dry, the mats can mold and rot.
While you’re cleaning your trailer, check for any signs of excessive wear or deterioration. If something needs fixed, take care of it, or schedule an appointment with an authorized trailer repair center if something needs fixed.

What You Should Know About Your Credit Score

You should know your credit score - or at least have an idea where you stand - before you fill out a credit application, to make sure you're getting the best deal that you can.

What Is A Credit Score?

A credit score is a number generated by one of the three major credit bureaus: Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. These organizations may provide different numbers because they use different methods to calculate your score. In general, credit scores range from 300 to 850. Most financial institutions consider a score above 700 good.

How Do I Find Out My Credit Score?

Go to AnnualCreditReport.com to check your credit report. You can get one free report from each of the three credit bureaus each year. You can also learn your credit score at other free sites such as CreditKarma.com, but make sure they are legitimate BEFORE you share any personal information.

It is smart to check your credit report on a regular basis to make sure it is free from errors.

Does a Good Credit Score Guarantee a Good Loan?

Different lenders have different determinants for financing rates and terms and may not offer similar loan rates. If you get a rate that you believe is too high for your credit rating (which you should be monitoring), you may want to try a different lender, or go to your personal bank or credit union for financing instead of using an unfamiliar lender.

You can improve your credit score, but it may take time. The two smartest things you can do are to pay your bills on time, and to not borrow more than you can comfortably pay back.

How Old Are Your Trailer Tires?

There's nothing worse than getting ready to head out, only to find out that you have a flat tire on your trailer or tow vehicle.

Tires, like any rubber product, degrade over time, regardless of how much tread is left on them. Therefore, it is essential that you know how old the tires are on your trailer and that you keep an eye on them for any signs of excessive wear or damage.

Tires older than 5 or 6 years are more susceptible to blow out when traveling, so when buying a new trailer (or replacing tires on ANY vehicle), make sure they have been manufactured within the past year or so.

So how do you know when your trailer tires were made?

Tires are manufactured with a 4-digit date code, which represent the week and year the tire was made. This code is on the tire usually in a circle or indented oval following the other sizing numbers and info on the tire.

* If don't see this number on a tire that's already mounted, it might be on the inside sidewall.

If you have ANY doubts about the age or condition of a tire, have it checked at an authorized trailer service center. Your safety is worth it!

Tips for Buying a Trailer from a Private Seller

If you read the newspaper and the online classifieds, it seems that everybody and their brother wants to sell their used trailer at an “unbelievable price.”

But how do you know if a good deal is a “deal,” or if the seller is trying to make a “steal?” Heed these 3 pieces of advice before heading out to buy that trailer:

Tip #1 – Know the Seller

If you don’t know the seller personally, at least get a complete name, address and phone number. Without this info, it might be impossible to contact the seller if you have a question or problem after buying the trailer. If you’re meeting the seller somewhere other than at their home or business, be careful!

Tip #2 – Know What You’re Buying

Some sellers may not be honest about any problems or damage areas on their used trailer. We’ve posted many articles about what to look for before buying a used trailer—read them before you shop.

Tip #3 – Know the Paperwork

Never give someone money without receiving a signed and dated (by the seller) Certificate of Title, Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin, and/or a completed Bill of Sale. Without the proper ownership documents, you have no proof that the trailer being sold by the right person (or is stolen property)!

As with any big purchase, use caution (and trust your instincts) when buying from private sellers. If a deal sounds too good to be true, there may be something fishy going on.

10 Tips for Winter Trailer Travel

Whether you like it or not, winter is here…and that means being ready to deal with bad weather when you're on the road. Driving on snow and ice is never fun, and it's even more challenging if you’re pulling a loaded trailer.

Here's our list of tips to help make sure you and your cargo make it to your destination safely:

· Plan for extra driving time, even if you're just going down the road.

· Allow extra space between your vehicle and those around you in case you need to maneuver or stop quickly. If there is rain or snow on the road, it will take longer for your tow vehicle and trailer to stop.

· Avoid riding directly beside other vehicles for long periods. This will keep you out of the way in case another driver must stop quickly.

· Brake slow and steady in non-emergency situations, so the trailer does not push, lurch or sway.

· Pump the brakes to slow the trailer in an emergency situation. Even if you have snow tires on your tow vehicle, the trailer could easily jackknife.

· Avoid riding the brakes. Overheating the brake pads makes them less effective (and creates the possibility of fire.)

· Scan the road for hazards and potential dangerous situations.

· Be prepared. Search for a quick way out, such as veering onto the shoulder of the road, in case you need to make a sudden stop.

· Pull off the road and seek shelter if travel conditions worsen, or if you are not comfortable driving in snow, sleet or freezing rain. Resume your journey when the bad weather passes and the roads are plowed or cleared.

· Don't test your limits because someone else convinces you that it's not that bad outside.

In winter weather, getting where you're going safely should be your number one concern—even if this means postponing your travel plans.

Storing Your Horse Trailer

Just because riding or show season is over, that doesn't mean you ignore your horse trailer for the winter.

We've talked before about how to winterize your horse trailer. Once that is done (whether you do it yourself or have the trailer winterized at an authorized trailer service center such as Lazy B), you need to follow a few simple steps to store your trailer so it will be in good shape when it's time to put it back in use.

5 SUGGESTIONS FOR STORING YOUR HORSE TRAILER

Make sure you park the trailer on level ground.
Adjust the jack so that the weight of the trailer is distributed evenly between the tongue and the tires. Elevate the front of the trailer just a bit so that the rain and snow will slide off of the roof.
If possible, store your trailer indoors to preserve the paint/finish. If possible, park the trailer on concrete to protect the tires from dry rot.
If you plan to store your trailer for a long time, jack up each side of the trailer and place blocks under the axles where the springs attach. This will take the weight of the trailer off of the tires.
Store your trailer away from horses or other animals that might cause exterior damage by chewing or rubbing.

The Difference between Electric Brakes and Hydraulic Brakes

Trailer brakes are an essential part of the towing equipment you need to haul safely. Many states have laws that require mandatory trailer brakes that are separate from the brakes on the tow vehicle when a trailer exceeds a certain weight limit; in Ohio, trailer brakes are required on any trailer with two or more axles.

Trailer brakes fall into two categories, electric brakes and hydraulic brakes.

Electric brake controller

Electric brakes are controlled by a brake controller in the tow vehicle that takes voltage from the tow vehicle’s electrical system and routes it to the trailer brakes via a simple wiring system. Electric brakes have no without hydraulic fluid, master cylinders, or brake lines.

Since the brake controller is wired to the tow vehicle, the electric brake system is always “on.” However, it sends power to the trailer brakes only when activated. The driver activates the electric trailer brakes when stepping on the tow vehicle brake pedal, or when engaging the manual activation lever or button.

Electric trailer brakes have a magnet inside of the wheel hub assembly that causes the brake shows to push against the drum when signaled from the brake control.

Electric brakes are easier to install and maintain than hydraulic brakes—the magnet wires, brake shoes and return springs are the only parts that need servicing or replaced—and the only extra initial expense is the brake control itself.

Surge brake drums

Hydraulic (sometimes called surge) brakes are activated by a special coupler on the trailer. The advantage of hydraulic brakes is that you don’t need a brake controller or special wiring for your tow vehicle. However, surge brakes may not meet DOT requirements—regulations state that trailers with brakes must be fitted with an actuator that allows the tow vehicle driver to operate the trailer brakes independent of the tow vehicle brakes.

Hydraulic brakes do not do this. When you press the brake pedal on the tow vehicle, the surge brake coupler's internal master cylinder compresses against the coupler body, forcing brake fluid through the brake lines to the wheel cylinders which forces the brake shoes against the drum (or pads against the rotor, if equipped with the newer disc brakes). However, in case of an emergency, there is no way for apply the trailer brakes independently from the brakes of the tow vehicle.

Hydraulic brake systems must be serviced and regularly maintained to keep them in working order. You can have the surge brake system serviced at a qualified trailer repair and service center.

Is One Type of Brake Better Than the Other?

It’s not a matter of whether electric brakes are better than hydraulic brakes or vice versa. Instead, each type of brake system is used for specific applications.

Most horse trailers and trailers with a GVWR of less than 16,000 lbs. come with electric brakes. Surge brakes are usually found on larger trailers, such as flatbeds and equipment trailers.

How to Winterize Your Horse Trailer

If, like many of us, you plan to park your living quarters trailer for the winter, there are steps you need to take to unnecessary problems and repair bills in the spring, especially if you live in an area where the temperatures drop below freezing.

The following steps are general. A trailer dealer or authorized service center can help you choose those that are most appropriate for your needs:

Park your horse trailer on a solid, level surface.
Winterize the exterior and chassis as recommended in your trailer owner’s manual.
Winterize the 110V generator (if applicable) as suggested in the owner’s manual.
Clean the horse trailer thoroughly, both inside and out, including the refrigerator.
Turn off all electrical switches and appliances.
Close the curtains. If you’re storing the trailer outdoors, place foil or paper between the windows and the screens to prevent the curtains from fading.
Close all windows, doors and vents.
Cover the exterior vents on appliances to prevent moisture and insects from entering.
Check inside the horse trailer regularly during the winter to make there are no new leaks or condensation issues. To reduce condensation, air the horse trailer out occasionally during storage.
Check the battery electrolyte level and make sure it is full charged. (A discharged battery will freeze and crack the case) Check the battery charge once a month—if the charge is 80% or less, charge the battery. NOTE: You may want to remove the batteries from the horse trailer and store them in a heated area. Even when warm, the battery charge level must still be maintained; however, a warm battery accepts charge much more readily than a cold one.
Remove any snow that accumulates on your trailer.
If you intend to store your horse trailer outside or in an unheated building, you must winterize the water system to prevent damage. To winterize your water system:

Make sure the trailer is level.
Drain the waste water tanks.
Turn the water pump switch off.
Open all faucets and the water heater drain.
Open low point drains on the water lines.
Drain the fresh water tank.
When all the lines are drained, close the water tank valves, water heater drain and low point drains on water lines.
Fill the fresh water tank with a non-toxic antifreeze solution, per the product directions.
Turn on the water pump and allow the winterizing solution to circulate and fill the system.
Close each faucet as solution flows freely from it. This also includes the water line to the toilet.
Turn off the water pump.

Consult your trailer owner’s manual for additional information on storage, cleaning and winterizing procedures and ask your dealer for instructions suitable to your geographic area.

How Much Should I Sell My Used Trailer For?

Whether we get a call from someone who wants to sell their cargo trailer at home or someone wishing to trade a horse trailer for a newer model, we're asked this question all the time. Unfortunately, there's no standard answer.

Though you can find blue book values for travel trailers and RVs, there is no blue book for horse trailers or cargo trailers.

If you want to sell your used trailer yourself, start by writing down important information such as the year, make and model. Also list any special features that the trailer may have. Check the condition of the trailer, both inside and out, and note any signs of damage or excessive wear.

Next, search online for similar trailers. TrailersUSA, UsedTrailers.com and HorseTrailerWorld/CargoTrailerWorld are just a few of the many sites with easily searchable inventory of new and used trailers from all over the country.

Compare your trailer with similar online listings. Write down at least three prices; average these prices to get a good idea of where to price your trailer.(Note: This is where the features matter--prices could be dramatically different between trailer models with fewer features vs. trailers with custom or extra features.)

Take the time to research before sticking a too-high or too-low price on your trailer. Your trailer is more likely to sell if you're in the right price range for your particular trailer.

Enclosed cargo and specialty trailer manufacturer Aluminum Trailer Co. (ATC) announced the expansion of its affordable all-aluminum Raven Lite line to include 8 1/2-foot wide-body auto transporters in lengths from 16 feet to 24 feet.

According to a press release, the Raven Lite line features an all-aluminum perimeter tube frame for strength and durability, spring axles, .030 aluminum exterior skin, seamless aluminum roofing, 3/4-inch Advantech flooring, a 32-inch side door with flush lock, non-powered roof vent and 12-volt interior lighting.

The new wide body models for the auto-minded user also features floor cross members 16 inches on center, a ramp door with transition flap, beavertail and four D-rings. The Raven Lite with the car hauler package has a MSRP range of $7,030 to $8,667, depending on the trailers length and axle configuration.

Though the thought of backing up while hauling a trailer sounds like a near-impossible task to many people, it can be easier if you follow these three tips:

(And before you ask, Ron and Larry have been known to take uncertain customers on test drives so that they are sure they can handle hauling their new trailers.)

The most important thing to remember when
backing up a trailer is to think "backwards."

1.) KNOW HOW A TRAILER HITCH WORKS. The ball-and-socket combination on a trailer hitch allows the trailer to move (and turn) with the tow vehicle. That’s fine when you’re moving forward, but can cause confusion when you need drive in reverse. Because of the ball hitch joint, when you turn your tow vehicle, the trailer usually pivots in the opposite direction.

To back up your trailer, you need to steer your tow vehicle in the opposite direction. For instance, if you want to go to the right in a car, you turn the wheel to the left. With a trailer, it’s backwards. If you want the trailer to go to the right, you turn the steering wheel to the right.

Some people recommend placing your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel and slowly turning it in the direction in which you want the trailer to end up.*

2.) Needless to say, before you back up your trailer it’s important that you PAY ATTENTION to what’s going on around you. Look for objects that might cause a problem such as curbs, cars, trees, light poles, fire hydrants, and other people.

3.) PRACTICE until you’re comfortable before heading out on the road. Backing up a trailer takes conscious effort—find an open parking lot or other area where you can learn to maneuver your trailer without having to worry about damaging it.

If possible, drive with a friend. Two sets of eyes are always better than one.

Though backing up with a trailer may never feel natural, the more you practice the easier it gets.
