Jeff Bezos said he's going to focus more on his space firm | Blue Origin and Amazon

After resigning as CEO of Amazon this year, Jeff Bezos announced on Tuesday that he would give more time to his rocket company Blue Origin.

In a letter to Amazon employees, Bezos said that as CEO of Amazon Mazon, he has been involved in major Amazon ventures, but that he also has the time and energy to focus on such projects as Blue Origin, the Washington Post, its first day.

Therefore, more blue-headed targets need to be included to change space travel. He wants to continue building rockets and engines to launch human orbits and other payloads outside of Earth's orbit, and eventually colonize the solar system.

“We are committed to creating space so that our children can shape the future,” the company says on its website.

What will Blue Origin do?

Blue Origin is a United States aerospace company based in Kent, Washington. Bezos owned this company and currently run by CEO Bob Smith.

Bezos founded Blue Origin in 2000 and called it his "most important job."

Bezos, the world's richest man, founded Blue Origin in September 2000, making space travel more accessible through cheaper, more frequent and reusable launch systems.

Jeff needs Amazon

In an interview with El Springer in 2001, Bezos said that more important than his mezzanine - airlines is his "most important work".

He said, "I will continue this work because I believe that if you do not do this, you will reach a civilization of stasis which I find extremely disappointing."

Billionaires have been fascinated with space travel since childhood. Insider Dave Mosher announced in 2018 that Bezos spent his childhood summer in his grandparents ’large village in South Texas and studied with machines. He also went to the local library to read science fiction novels about space exploration.

The motto of blue origin is "Gradatim Ferociter", in Latin "step-by-step, with rage".

Bezos often uses hash marks in Instagram posts about his business.

What Blue Origin does next

Blue Origin has many projects.

In December, NASA discovered Blue Origin with its New Glen rocket for future Earth observation missions, planetary missions and satellite launches, which took a step closer to the space company's star.

In May, Blue Origin received 1 billion from NASA to build a preliminary project for a human landing system for the Artemis 3 mission, which aims to land people on the moon by 2024.

Blue Origin will compete with Elon Musk and Alabama Dynamics' SpaceX to land NASA astronauts in 2024. Bezos said in an Instagram post in December that the company could run the same woman.

In 2019, Bezos unveiled a giant lunar landing called Blue Moon, which he said would help "go to the moon" and keep blue roots in space. The company’s ultimate goal is to find out what the moon calls permanent human presence.

BE-1, BE-2, BE-3, BE-4 and BE-7 - Blue Origin has also developed five rocket engines since its inception. For the company's reusable purpose, the engine is designed for multiple uses and is being tested at its test site in Van Horn, Texas.

Let me show you something.

Up until now, Jeff Bezos is said to have spent only one day a week at Blue Origin.

But that is about to change. For 27 years, Bezos has been steering what is now the world's largest online retailer.

But he recently announced he'll be stepping down as Amazon's CEO later this year writing to staff: when you have a responsibility like that it's hard to put attention on anything else. He'll transition to Executive Chair of the company's Board while turning his focus toward higher pursuits. Blue Origin has never been a hobby or a side project for Jeff Bezos.

Space is where his heart is. He's been obsessed with it since he was a little boy.

His high school girlfriend once told reporters the reason he wanted to get rich off Amazon was so he'd have the cash to pursue

his dream. Yet his rocket venture lags far behind SpaceX.

Elon Musk's aerospace firm has already sent astronauts to the International Space Station,

launched satellites for a new internet service, and is developing the giant Starship to send people to Mars one day.

In comparison, Blue Origin still hasn't even orbited the Earth despite being two years older.

Its New Shepard launch vehicle has flown more than a dozen times but it only goes to the edge of space, with the plan of providing a fun suborbital flight for tourists in the near future.

Musk has called Bezos too old and his rocket company too slow to achieve anything great but freed from his duties at Amazon, Blue Origin will most certainly get a substantial boost from the billionaire who knows a thing or two about building a successful company.

All eyes are now on New Glenn. The heavy lift rocket is supposed to reach orbit for the first time this year. It's partially reusable. The first stage booster lands back on Earth just like SpaceX's Falcon 9 does.

New Glenn already has contracts to launch internet satellites for the Canadian telecommunications company Telesat and the UK's OneWeb. With Bezos's business acumen,

Blue Origin is hoping to go after more customers and can even overcome its late start to help bring Amazon's internet satellites into service.

Project Kuiper could give SpaceX's Starlink a run for its money.

Both are trying to beam high-speed internet to remote places where it's currently too expensive or simply unavailable. SpaceX is clearly well ahead.

Over a thousand of its satellites are already in space with a planned 12,000-strong constellation at the very least whereas Kuiper still exists only on paper.

Despite Amazon not having launched a single satellite yet, the rivalry is heating up between Bezos and Musk. When Amazon and other companies opposed SpaceX's request to move its satellites to a lower altitude than originally planned,

Musk tweeted: it does not serve the public to hamstring Starlink, pointing out Kuiper is at best several years away from operation.

Amazon fired back, accusing SpaceX of trying to smother competition.

We don't know when Kuiper will launch but half of its 3,000 satellites have to be up and running within six years to meet licensing requirements.

When it does get off the ground, it could expand Amazon's empire by becoming the middleman for getting data into its successful cloud service AWS.

Getting satellites into orbit is just a step into space for Bezos.

He wants to go much farther.

We're not going back to the moon to visit. We're going back to the moon to stay.

This is a full-scale prototype of the descent stage of Blue Origin's lunar lander

which is based off the Blue Moon lander the company had previously been working on.

NASA will choose either this vehicle or SpaceX's modified Starship or the entry from Dynetics to send American astronauts back to the moon for the first time

in nearly 50 years. The government agency was supposed to narrow the race down to two by the end of February.

That has now been extended to the end of April as the Biden administration re-evaluates the 2024 target for a moon landing.

Bezos appears pretty confident his ride will be chosen,

declaring on Instagram that Blue Origin's BE-7 rocket engine will be the one to take the first woman to the surface of the moon.

NASA handed Blue Origin over half a billion dollars to develop the lander - a considerable chunk of change.

But for the most part, Bezos has been paying out of his own pocket to keep his rocket company afloat funneling a billion dollars worth of Amazon stock toward it every year.

So securing juicy contracts could make Blue Origin less dependent on his own personal wealth and perhaps erase some of the disappointment of losing out to United Launch Alliance and SpaceX for a U.S. Air Force contract worth billion. With the funding, Bezos has a bigger, long-term vision for humans in space.

Imagine moving off the planet into enormous space colonies holding a million people or more.

He believes Blue Origin is his most important work because he fears Earth's resources will run out one day.

It would lead for the first time to where your grandchildren and their grandchildren would have worse lives than you.

There is one place in space he doesn't want to go. He's not a fan of Musk's plan to build a city on Mars, pointing out Mount Everest would be a "garden paradise" in his words compared to the freezing red planet.

But while the SpaceX CEO has a timeline for sending the first humans to Mars 2026 is his latest estimate - it will be well into the future before Bezos's big dream has a shot of coming true, Blue Origin may liken itself to the tortoise in the fable where slow and steady beats the speedy hare however some believe this tortoise is just too slow.

By leaving the top job at Amazon and focusing more energy on his true passion, Bezos wants to prove them wrong. But it's not a sprint.

The race to space requires both mental and physical endurance.

Silicon Valley has been the mecca of tech for decades. It got its name from the silicon used to make computer chips. The area near San Francisco is attractive to companies for numerous reasons. The proximity to prestigious schools such as Stanford, the beauty, and the year-round sunshine.

The idea of a tech company moving out of such an idyllic setting might have seemed crazy a few years ago. But not anymore. Tech companies are exiting California at lightning speed, relocating to Texas, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington.

There used to be a competitive advantage to having brilliant minds concentrated in one giant epicenter. But social distancing has changed the game. Returning to the office full-time might never again be the norm. Twitter, Facebook, and DropBox have already offered their employees the option of permanently working remotely.

No surprise then that 135,000 more people recently left California than moved in – opting to go where the cost of living is lower. Without employees in the office, companies are reconsidering their own futures in the state. HP Enterprise, a spin-off of Hewlett Packard that literally started Silicon Valley out of a garage in Palo Alto, California in the 30smoved its headquarters to Houston, believing it’s an easier place to attract talent. And it’s pretty clear why. California’s personal income tax rate for those earning a million dollars or more is 13.3%. In Texas – it’s 0%. And money goes much further down south. A $2.5 million dollar home in Houston gets you this. In Palo Alto, it gets you this.

Let’s just say it’s a little less luxurious. Homes are so unaffordable in California, some people have been forced to camp out in RVs. The problem is that the state hasn’t been building enough to keep up with demand. Critics blame strict land-use regulations for limiting the number of homes being built. But officials blame the tech sector for flooding the region with jobs.

Soaring housing prices mean businesses have to pay workers more to match the higher cost of livingAccording to one estimate, the average tech salary in the San Francisco Bay Area is $155,000 whereas in Austin, it’s $137,000. Not to mention if a business were to buy a couple acres of land, it’s a lot cheaper to do so in the Lonestar state. And then, there are all the regulations that come with operating in a blue state like California.

For example, the cap-and-trade program sets limits on emissions for companies. Although proponents applaud this as environmentally friendly, critics see it as unfriendly to business. Execs also complain about the state being outright hostile to the tech industry. The Bay Area city of Mountain View banned Facebook and others from serving free food – a major company perk – in an effort to help out local restaurants.

A couple of years ago, San Francisco banned delivery robots on most city sidewalks. And ride-hailing services Lyft and Uber threatened to shut down in the state last year over a law requiring them to classify drivers as employeesrather than independent contractors.

Elon Musk once suggested California is acting like an arrogant sports team in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. If a team has been winning for too long, they do tend to get a little complacent, a little entitled, and then they don’t win the championship anymore.

He himself has had run-ins with officials. When Tesla’s Fremont, California factory was forced to close to comply with lockdown rules, and the local county suggested it should remain closed,the company sued and Musk tweeted he would move its headquarters out of the state.

That didn’t sit well with state politician Lorena Gonzalez who was quick to tweet her response. Bleep Elon Musk. He apparently got the message. Tesla is building a massive manufacturing plant on the outskirts of Austin. In fact, all of his companies now have a footprint in Texas, including SpaceX, which is developing Starship in Boca Chica, in south Texas,to prepare for future missions to Mars. Musk has personally moved to Texas – one of many high profile people to leave California.

They include: Tim Ferriss, Ben Shapiro, and Joe Roganwho scored a $100 million dollar Spotify deal and moved his empire to Texas. People are just bailing. There’s a mass exodus out of California right now.

I don’t particularly like the way things are run here. Business leaders who packed their bags include Dropbox CEO Drew Houston, tech investor Keith Rabois, Oracle founder Larry Ellison,who makes his home in Hawaii while the software giant shifted its headquarters to Austin.

The Texas capital has become a hot relocation spot – earning the nickname “Silicon Hills” for the tech hub on the hilly west side. Although Texas is known for being conservative, Austin is considered a blue city in a red state – more liberal and therefore more similar to Silicon Valley. Not that everyone is welcoming the new exiles with open arms as evidenced by this saying.

Plenty of other cities are also landing spots. Denver welcomed data analytics specialist Palantir. Tempe, in Arizona, opened its doors to Align Technology, the maker of the Invisalign. Miami is another up and comer. Its mayor set off a Twitter storm when somebody suggested turning the Magic City into the next Silicon Valley and he eagerly responded “How can I help?”

The Japanese conglomerate SoftBank recently invested $100 million into Miami startups. With all these cities reaping the rewards from the mass exodus, what will happen to Silicon Valley? As people vacated the area, there are indications rents are starting to fall, plunging 30% in some cases in San Francisco.

It could also impact California’s bottom line – and therefore the amount of investment in infrastructure, research, and education. Although the state hasn’t lost all its superstars – Apple remains in Cupertino, Google in Mountain View the golden state, once the envy of the tech world, appears to be losing some of its shine. Companies are realizing people can be just as productive working remotely. Yet there is a potential downside.

Friends, I was watching a Youtube video that has 92 million views! 92 million!

Now, you could ask what’s the big deal about ?

It is not such a huge deal about us Indians. Because videos of several movie trailers and songs easily garner a 100 million views. But in this context, there are two interesting things to note.

First: The whole video is in Russian. And all the comments in this video are in Russian as well. And do you know the population of Russia? 144 million. That means, if we assume that half of the people who have watched this video are from Russia, Then that would mean 1/3^rd of the Russian population has watched this Youtube video.

Another interesting thing is that this is not a popular song or the trailer of a popular film. It is a video that exposes the corruption of Putin.

Greetings, friends!

What is happening in Russia today is one of the biggest threats to Putin till date. In more than 70 cities across Russia, the cold is chilling- temperatures are dipping down to -50 degrees. Even then, thousands of people have come out on the streets to protest against Putin. How strong can a person be- you will be shocked to know! Come, let us delve deeper into it.

Story of Alexei Navalny

The protests began after an individual by the name of Alexei Navalny was arrested in Moscow. When he was returning from Berlin back to Moscow on 17 January. On arriving at Moscow’s airport, he was arrested by the police. Shortly before he was placed in prison, Navalny filmed a message and posted it in social media.

In which he called for nationwide protests and urged his supporters to take part in the protests. But you might wonder who is Navalny and why have the Russians come out in support for him. Alexei Navalny was born June 4, 1976. His father was born in Ukraine.

He spent a lot of his childhood in Chernobyl before the nuclear accident in 1986. After earning degrees in law and finance from Russian universities, Navalny entered politics in 1999. This was the same year when Putin became Russian President for the first time.

Navalny started his political career by joining the liberal opposition party Yabloko. But disagreements with the party caused him to be expelled from the party in 2007. Gradually, he developed his Anti-Corruption Foundation and became popular in Russiaupon exposing corruption scandals in the late 2000s . Meanwhile, he also started his own party and tried to contest the elections- the idea was a flop one. In 2012, allegations were cast that the Putin won the elections through fraud.

So, he conducted rallies against Putin in Moscow for which he was put in jail for 15 days. In 2017, he got arrested for 25 days, in 2019, he got arrested for 30 days. Throughout the decade (between 2010-2020), he conducted anti-Putin, pro-democratic rallies. And protested that the elections conducted in Russia are fraudulent. And consistently tried to beat Putin in elections.

Today, he is seen as the face of the opposition in Russia – standing against Putin. Along with that, he is an anti corruption activist and you could even call him a Youtuber. Because the video with 90 million views that I had showed you was actually made by him. He is single handedly serving as the opposition as well as the independent media.

The problem, as you might already be aware of- is that Russia is a democracy only for name sake. It is a democratic country only on paper when in reality it is a dictatorship under Putin.

Russian Dictatorship

You will get to know the reality when you check Russia’s democratic index or Press Freedom index. Each time elections are conducted, allegations are cast on Putin and how he won the elections through fraud. All the television channels and newspapers have genuflected before the government or sold themselves (to the government).

The condition of the media there is even worse than the condition of the media in India. In such a dictatorship, for an opposition politician to win the elections is too far fetched. It is a challenge to merely stay alive. Literally.

Because Navalny has been attacked fatally many times, about which I will talk later. But despite that, Navalny has remain committed to exposing Putin in one case after the other. In the video with 92 million views, Navalny exposes (allegedly) Putin’s 1 billion dollar worth secret palace.

This is a palace that is secret and people do not know about and it was allegedly paid for “with the largest bribe in the world”. He has bought a huge area. The video is 2 hour long. Do watch it. If you do not understand Russian, then English subtitles are also available on the video.

Coming back to Navaly, I would like to tell you about the different ways Putin has tried to suppress him.

Putin’s Attempts to Silence Opposition

In 2011 Navalny was arrested for the first time for his role in a protest. In 2012, Putin ordered Russia’s Investigative Committee to launch a criminal inquiry into Navalny’s past.

The following year, in 2013, Mr Navalny was accused and sentenced for embezzling timber worth $500,000 from thestate timber company. This was in regard to the timber wood. In Russia, the dictatorship is so entrenched in the country that even the court judges are pawns of the government. Judgements are always delivered in favour of Putin.

This is the case of 2013 that was used to bar him from standing against Putin in the Presidential elections. Because there is a rule in place that states that a person with a pending criminal case against him cannot contest the Presidential elections.

Even his family members have not been spared. In 2014, his brother was jailed in a fabricated case. His brother spent three and a half years in prison before being released in 2018. In 2020, Russian authorities seized Navalny’s bank accounts and those of his wife, son and daughter. Navalny was forced to close his Anti-Corruption Foundation in July 2020, under the pretext of some allegations. And if this makes you wonder how much torture can a person undergo…

Then this is just the start. As previously mentioned, he has also been fatally attacked. He was even allegedly poisoned. Not once, but on three occasions.

The first attempt was in 2018, Navalny was attacked with a bright green liquid by an assailant who pretended to shake his hand- but he was saved.

The second time, was in 2019 when he suffered an allergic reaction in jail, allegedly from an “unknown chemical substance”. He was saved even then.

The third time was on 20 August, 2020. After drinking tea while in an airport, he became violently ill during a flight. The plane made an emergency landing and he was rushed to a hospital in Germany. The German government and labs in France and Sweden conducted an independent investigation on his body.

It was discovered that Navalny had been poisoned with a substance named Novichok. It was first suspected that his tea was poisoned but it was later found out that the assassin put the poison in his underwear. After this incident, he slipped into coma and stayed in that state for two weeks. He was on ventilator and you could say that.

He got saved with great difficulty despite that. This was the incident of September 2020. And thankfully, he was in a hospital in Germany. Had he been in some hospital in Russia, attempts would have been made to finish him off again.

But what he did after this shocked the entire world. He conducted an investigation undercover and posted a video of that on YouTube. The video was titled “I called my killer. He confessed.” (The title was in Russian- this is the English translation).

It is indeed as surprising as it sounds. He actually conducted an investigation to try and find out the person who tried to kill him/assassinate him. He called him up and pretended to be an intelligence officer and got him to confess how he attempted to assassinate him. The entire phone call is available on Youtube- What was the plan and why did it fail.

Not only was a Russian opposition politician attacked fatally,The very person who was attacked conducted an investigation himself and called up the attacker an got him to confess. Sounds like the title of a James Bond film, but it is, infact, the reality.

After all this, Mr. Navalny could have easily stayed safely in Germany. His life was less threatened there as compared to Russia.

Conclusion

He could have easily kept exposing Putin from there. His killer call video had already gone viral. He had already garnered more than 20-30 million views.

And everyone knew that if he returned to Russia now, Putin would finish him off definitelyBut despite that, Navany decided to go back to Russia. In January 2021, he boarded the flight from Berlin to Moscow. And the police arrested him as soon as he landed, in the presence of the media.

So did you understand the context of why so many people are out on the streets in Russia to protest in Navalny? In my opinion, Navalny decided to go back to Russia because he know that he couldn’t do much about exposing Putin save making videos. But this would not really affect Putin’s political power.

Putin could still continue his dictatorship. Going back to Russia and endangering his life sends a strong message to his supporters. And that is – in order to stand up to this dictator, one has to show courage. Which he himself is exemplifying. This action of his motivates his supporters to come upfront and protest in temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees.

The Russian police has detained more than 3,000 people in relation to these protests. But these protests are in no way slowing down. Navalny knew that he would be arrested upon his arrival to Russia and so he came prepared. Just after a day he was arrested, he released his biggest expose on Youtube. The video with 92 million views that exposes the corruption of Putin worth billions. He had already filmed this video. But when did he release it?

After his arrest. He has also made it clear that he has no intention of suiciding in jail. As a safety measure- to prevent Putin and the Russian authorities from declaring that he committed “suicide” in jail. Experts believe that by putting Navalny in jail, Putin is digging his own grave. For all the time he is in jail, if something happens to him , he will become a martyr.

Which would instigate and enrage people and increase the protests. While letting him go could threaten the parliamentary election, which is upcoming this year. When the public support (for Navalny) is so clearly evident, the public might not let Putin get away with an election fraud this time. In 2018, Navalny launched a project called Smart Voting.

That is designed to promote candidates who are most likely to defeat those Putin’s United Russia party. The success of this project became evident in 2019, when the project helped opposition candidates win 20 of 45 seats on the Moscow city council.

And regional elections last year saw United Russia lose its majority. The election frauds majorly take place in Presidential elections when Putin himself is contesting them. But his party is losing in the local elections. This year parliamentary election is upcoming in Russia: let us see what happens. In response, Putin denies all allegations put on him and maintains that “US is meddling”. And that Navalny is under the influence of anti national and foreign forces.

Putin’s Response

But the rest of the countries of the world have clearly seen what has happened. The governments of USA, UK, Germany France have all put pressure on Russia. To release Navalny and that the arrest is wrong. But irrespective of whether Navalny is released anytime soon or not, one thing is for sure: a spark has been lit among the people.

The whole of Russia has seen what exactly has happened through Youtube videos. And this is why it could be a turning point in Russian history.

We could hope to see an actual democracy in Russia in the coming years.

Car safety has improved drastically over the years. This 1959 Chevy didn’t fare well against a model that’s 50 years newer. Today’s vehicles are safer thanks largely to advancements in engineering.

And one company appears to be leading the pack. Teslas have consistently received five-star ratings from organizations that perform crash tests, such as the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

One reason you’d be safer in a Tesla is that electric cars don’t have an engine, so all the steel and aluminum at the front crumples and absorbs much of the impact,preventing it from being transmitted to the occupants. The lack of an engine isn’t the only reason they’re safe. It has to do with the overall structure of the vehicle.

They’re difficult to roll over because they have a low center of gravity since the heavy battery pack and the electric motors sit low in the vehicle. The American road safety regulator, NHTSA, determined that the mid-size SUV, the Model Y, has a rollover risk of about 8%. Tesla says that’s the lowest risk of any SUV ever built.

And lower than the chances of the Model X flipping over. In the unfortunate event that it does overturn, the Tesla relies on the strength of its roof to protect the people inside.

The Model 3’s roof has been found to resist more than 20,000 pounds of force - nearly six times its own weight. Or, as Tesla points out, it can withstand the weight of about two full-grown African elephants. The part of a car that offers the least amount of protection is the side - since there’s no area designed to crumple, unlike the front and rear ends.

To get over this side panel weakness, Teslas have been heavily reinforced with ultra-high grade steel, shown in teal blue,while the battery pack also acts as a barrier. If there is a side collision, the Model 3 has a thick curtain airbag that also contributes to a high safety rating. A real-world example comes to mind. In Oregon recently, the driver of a Model S crashed into a pole, hit two trees, and a telephone box.

The impact was so severe that hundreds of small batteries that work together to power the Tesla were ejected onto the road. Despite the damage, the driver walked away with only minor injuries.

Teslas have also been engineered to try to prevent accidents in the first place. A safety feature detects when the vehicle is drifting into another lane and then steers itself back.

And the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) recognizes obstacles and stops the car on its own. But there are still some kinks to be ironed out.

Well, if you’re one of those ones, then trust me, we’ve all been there. I have too.

So what I’ve learned for myself and what I want to share with you today, one of the keys is really establishing good habits. So how do we do that? Here, I think, are the top ten.

Number 1. Urging cluttered

So clutter can be anywhere from unnecessary documents to books to things that are stored. Just throw it away. Get rid of it. Go through everything.

If it’s not needed now, just get rid of it. Archive it. Store it. Get rid of it so that it’s not in your sight. If you’re like me, I see my little stacks and if I’m trying to focus on one thing I keep looking at my stacks thinking “There’s something over there I’ve got to do.” So it diverts my attention and pulls me away from things that I need to get done by a certain specific time.

Number 2. Avoid energy suckers and toxic people.

You know who they are. They’re the people who come by your desk and just go on and on and on about some problem or some drama they want you to either fix or change. But it’s constantly sucking your energy, taking your focus away from things that have to get done. Guess what? It’s eating at your time while your clock is ticking away.

Number 3. Establish systems.

So, it doesn’t matter if it’s paper systems or electronic system. Pick one. I actually use a blend. I’ve gone from using a day-timer system to literal calendars on the wall to trying to be all electronic. So I’ve found for myself is I really need a blend of those. So find what works for you and establish some form of system in place that you can track your time.

Number 4, block out working time.

Go ahead on your calendar throughout, if you know, if starting in January through the end of the year, if you have set meetings, schedules, things that you know are going to occur, go ahead and block that time out on your calendar, because you know you’ve already committed to that. So you need to make sure to protect it so that nothing else can come over or overlap that time.

Number 5. block non-working time.

So, it doesn’t matter if you get up in the mornings and you meditate or you work out, whether you do it in the mornings or the afternoon or maybe even lunchtime. Maybe you schedule a walk during lunch or maybe going to read a book or listen to music. Block that time out and vacations. Vacations – we find out that most people don’t even take vacations because they haven’t planned for them. They haven’t put them on the calendar. So what we find is if we get things on the calendar we more likely get those things done.

Number 6. Sync your devices.

So have you ever found yourself in a meeting where someone’s trying to schedule a meeting and you’re not real sure because maybe you have your iPhone but maybe you haven’t been syncing it with your computer or your laptop? So you over book yourself. If you keep everything synced, nowadays there is specific software that can sync from your smartphone to your computer to your laptop and now there are certain systems, project management software that will sync with that as well.

Number 7. Allow calendar access.

If you allow calendar access to those who need it, people who you authorize and trust, maybe people on your teams or maybe family, they can have access to your calendar. And see blocked out time so that they know not to plan or overbook or commit you to something that you have already committed to.

Number 8. Say “no”.

It’s a hard thing to practice and it’s a hard thing to say, and as project managers we try to typically accommodate everyone. But the best thing that we can do to work in our favor is set boundaries and practice saying “no”. A lot of times people think they have to justify why they’re saying “no”, and no, you don’t. “No” can be a complete sentence. So if someone asks you something or wants you to commit to something just say “No…” and just leave it at that. A long pause. You don’t have to explain, because if you explain then someone may try to find a solution, how you cannot do that and accommodate them. So they try to problem solve for you on your behalf. You don’t want that. So, set boundaries and just say no.

Number 9. Stop drive-bys.

You know those people that come by and they drop the hot potato? They’re the people who come by your desk on Friday afternoon, maybe they’ve held something all week and they leave it for you Friday afternoon to get done by Monday morning which leaves you working weekends. So just avoid that. Just put a stop to it. Avoid people coming by, allowing them to drop the hot potato in your lap.

Number 10. Change routines.

Routines do change and when your routines change then change everything. If you are no longer working out in the morning, change your calendar. If you no longer have certain meetings, change your calendar. Things change over time. I mean, depending upon what work or what projects that I have, the systems change, and all of this has to change accordingly.

Keep it up to date. The bonus is how to break bad habits. Well, we usually lose track of our time and we find ourselves working overtime, weekends, holidays because we’ve established bad habits. Because sometimes we’re watching others who have bad habits too, so we’re modeling or we’re copying what they do. So other people don’t necessarily have good habits.

We don’t want to mimic or we don’t want to model those. So if there’s intimidation in your work environment or there’s peer pressure to work late… You’ve seen it. We’ve all been in those environments where the culture is to work through lunch, work long hours, or work holidays and weekends. That’s a bad habit. We don’t have to do it. So, break the habits. If there’s intimidation or peer pressure in your environment, then get over it. Protect yourself. It’s up to you to protect yourself. Establish good habits and then you can control your time management.

I literally have a business where I get to create my own schedule. I decide when I work, how many hours I work, when I start, and who I work with. That is one of the best things of having your own business. I remember when I was working for other people as some of you may know, I used to be a corporate flunky.

I used to be a VP at a bank and I worked my way up in mortgage finance. But the biggest thing that I always hated no matter how much I worked: I never got to own my own time. They told me when I had to show up, they told me how many hours I had to work there.

And even as I climbed the corporate ladder, it seemed like the work just kept piling on and on and I never got to choose who I worked with and how I worked.

Well, as an entrepreneur, not only do you get to decide who you work with and when you work, you’ll also get to decide how much money you make.

Again, if you work a job they decide your salary, they tell you how many hours you work and they pay you overtime or they don’t this that and the other. But as an entrepreneur, I get to write my own check and I’ve gone from making $225,000 a year the last job that I work to making millions of dollars in my own businesses.

Because the key with starting your own business is once you get it and you do one right, you can make other businesses and repeat and repeat and repeat and get multiple streams of income from your core business. Let me tell you about that. So, step one, you need to decide.

Make A Decision

Make a decision as to what business it is that you are going to start. Are you going to start a business where you offer a service? Or are you going to sell a product?

You need to go through and sit down and take the time to write out your business plan. Decide what it is that you’re going to sell, how much you’re going to sell it for, who are your customers and how will you serve them.

The key to making a successful business that makes a lot of money is you want to be a problem solver. If there’s some problem in the market, you want to be a solution for that problem. So, what problem is it that your customers are going to have? What are they going through? Do they need more customers? Do they need more flowers? Do they need videography? What do they need? What is it that your business will do to serve your customer?

If you become a solution to someone’s problem, you’ll bring value and make a lot of money in the process. Make a decision. Think about that. So, when I got started in real estate, I realized that I needed to be a problem solver in my business.

Be a Problem Solver

And the way that I made tons of money in my business is I created a business all around being a problem solver to people that were having real estate problems. I’ve created a niche where I targeted people that were either in foreclosure or that inherited homes that they did not want.

I started off with a very small niche. I knew what the problem was and I studied my customer.

Then I made all of my business around what their problem was and I created a solution. All of my marketing material was all around how I was a solution to their problem. I talked about all of the things that they hated about real estate using real estate agents, paying commissions, long times to close. And then I created a

Business where I didn’t have those issues and I solved those problems. I told them I

Could close quickly, I could close with cash, I could do it where you didn’t have to pay real estate commissions and I could do it where I would save your credit and you didn’t have to fix the house up or make repairs. Bring value to your customer by being a solution to their problem. So, again, whatever business it is that you have, even if you’re like a wedding photographer for example, what do people hate about wedding photographers?

Is it the long lines? Is it the cost? Is it the annoying questions? Whatever the problem is, make sure your business addresses that and you provide a solution to that problem. Make all of your marketing material around being a solution.

Set Up the Buisness

Now that you know how you’re going to find these people and what solution you offer, let’s go ahead and set up the business. You can literally set up a real business in one day depending on what state you’re in. All you need to do is create a name for your business. What is the name of your business?

Make sure you tell people what it is that you do.

Get your business registered with the secretary of state. Go ahead and get your LLC, your C corp or your S corp. Make sure your business is legal. Get your EIN, get your professional phone, number get your professional email, and get a website for your business.

Make sure your website publishes and states over and over again all of the benefits of working with you and how you solve problems.

No matter what business you are in people are looking for solutions to their problems. And if they go to your website and they can quickly identify what it is that you do and how you can help them and how your solution to their problem, you will quickly find customers and start to build the business that you want quickly.

Hello Everyone, Welcome to Virsual Tech and today we will be discussing something which we should be really proud of as SpaceX and the United States both has again represented them as the topper in the World Space Industry!! In 2020, out of 114 orbital launch attempts of this planet 104 launches were successful. Ten launch attempts were failed which was double the number of launch failures that happened in 2019.

In the year 2019, 97 flights became successful from the total worldwide 102 orbital launch efforts. We all know that the world is presently cursed by the Covid Pandemic, which has seriously threatened human beings in all the phases and turnabouts of life. The space industry is not outside of this. Even though the global pandemic weakens the infrastructure, yet the 114 launch attempts in 2020 have tied up with the year 2018 for the most orbital launches worldwide.

The United States along with their launch providers(mainly SpaceX) carried out forty-four missions in 2020 to place payloads in Earth orbit or in the depth of space. Out of these 44 missions, forty missions were successful, placing the U.S. in a leading position in the space industry. Virgin Orbit and Astra both newcomers to the U.S. small satellite launch business, also carried out their first missions in 2020.

In 2020, SpaceX has topped over all the other launch providers. SpaceX has successfully completed its twenty-five orbital missions that deployed nearly thousand of satellites for the company’s Starlink internet network. SpaceX has also sent satellites to other companies. Notable flights of SpaceX were Demo-2 mission, Crew Dragon spaceship mission (Crew-1), a couple of space station resupply missions, and three launches of national security payloads(NRO) into orbit for the U.S. government.

SpaceX completed all the twenty-five orbital missions using its Falcon 9 rocket. Not only that, but SpaceX has also reused their boosters for twenty missions out of all the twenty-five launches.

SpaceX has flown one first stage booster five times in 2020. After SpaceX and other U.S. launch providers, China comes on next place covering about thirty-five launch successes out of thirty-nine orbital launch attempts. China has four launch failures throughout the year 2020.

In those failures the first one occurred inMarch when a problem arose during the first launch of the Long March 7A rocket, the second failure happened in April when a Long March3B failed with the Indonesian Palapa N1 communications satellite, the third failure was done in July due to problems during the launch of China’slight-class Kuaizhou 11 and the last failure was due to problem in launching Kuaizhou 1Arockets in September.

The most notable successes for China’s space program in last year comprised of launches of the Tianwen 1 rover in July to Mars and the whole journey of Change 5 lunar sample-collection mission in December.

Russia’s space program comes just afterU.S. and China. Russia completed seventeen successful launches of Russian-built rockets in 2020, whereas SpaceX alone as a company of U.S. completed twenty-five missions. Out of those seventeen launches in 2020, fifteen were conducted with the Soyuz launcher. Russia’s heavier Proton and Angara launch vehicles both have completed one mission in2020.

The Russian Soyuz missions had also launched two crews to the International Space Station(ISS), three groups of satellites for OneWeb’scommercial broadband network, and two Progresslogistics flights to the station.

Soyuz rockets also launched on two missions with Emirati and French military reconnaissance satellites from the European operated GuianaSpace Center in French Guiana. Japanese vehicles launched less than one-sixth of SpaceX launches in 2020. The good thing to notice is that all of the missions went successfully. Japan’s four orbital launch attempts held last year consisted of three flights of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ “H-2Arocket”.

The H-2A rocket launched two Japanese military satellites into orbit, these completed the first two missions. The third mission of the year was deploying the Hope Mars orbiter for the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The fourth launch of the year 2020 was also the ninth launch of the most powerful H-2Brocket. It was a dual-engine rocket.

In May, the H-2Brocket lifted off Japan’slast first-generation HTV cargo freighter with a large number of supplies for the international space station. India’s space launch program was totally halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In spite of that India has launched two successful orbital missions in 2020.

India performed two successful missions with its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV)in the months of November and December. Both delivered their payloads to orbit. Iran’s success rate is almost fifty percent as they have conducted two orbital launch missions in February and April and one of them was failed while another one was successful. Israel launched a single mission to deliver a military spy satellite into orbit.

Israel’s Shavit launcher successfully deployed their “ Ofek 16 military surveillance satellite” into orbit. United Launch Alliance (a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin) have successfully accomplished six missions last year. Out of the six missions, five missions were carried out along with ULA’s Atlas 5 rocket to deploy national security payloads into orbit, to launch the European-built SolarOrbiter science mission, and sent NASA’sPerseverance rover to Mars.

The last mission of the total six missions was accompanied by a Delta 4-Heavy rocket which happened in December. It deployed a top-secret spy satellite for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).

Rocket Lab, a company of New Zealand, who invented and created the Electron rocket have conducted seven missions in 2020. Six of them were successful, but unfortunately, one was failed. Rocket Lab has its headquartered in Long Beach, California. They construct all engine equipment and other mechanisms in the United States.

However, they assemble and launch their rockets from New Zealand. Electron rockets are intended to start their launching from a new launchpad located in Virginia, in 2021. Northrop Grumman has completed their three launches from the Mid Atlantic Regional Spaceport in Virginia in 2020. The three launches of Northrop Grumman comprises of two cargo launches to the InternationalSpace Station using Antares rockets and asolo flight of a solid-fuelled Minotaur 4rocket with satellites for the National ReconnaissanceOffice.

Arianespace, a European company launched five times from French Guiana in 2020.

European made launchers have reached orbit four times out of five attempts.

Three heavy-lift Ariane 5 rockets successfully launched from French Guiana with commercial communications satellites for B-SAT, Sky PerfectJSAT, Eutelsat, Intelsat, and the Indian SpaceResearch Organization (ISRO), a South Korean weather satellite, and a satellite servicing vehicle for Northrop Grumman’s ancillary space Logistics.

Richard Branson, a business mogul had founded the Virgin Orbit. This Virgin Orbit performed the first test flight of its airborne-launched LauncherOnerocket off the coast of Southern California in May 2020. Astra, another newcomer smallsat launch company, launched two of its orbital-class rockets on test flights from the launch site of Alaska.

The Virgin Orbit and Astra test flights all failed before reaching the targeted orbit, but the companies say they gathered enough data to set up for additional launches in the year 2021. The smaller Vega rocket program of Italy also undergo one failure in the two launch attempts in 2020.

The space launch stations from where launches were attempted in 2020 are:- Cape CanaveralSpace Force Station (Kennedy Space Center)in Florida; Jiuquan in China; Xichang space center in China; De Bo 3 platform near YellowSea; Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan; VandenbergAir Force Base in California; Mahia Peninsula in New Zealand; Vostochny Cosmodrome of Russia; Pacific Spaceport Complex of Alaska, Mid-AtlanticRegional Spaceport in Virginia; Satish DhawanSpace Center of India; Plesetsk Cosmodromeof Russia; Palmachim Airbase of Israel; GuianaSpace Center in French Guiana; Shahroud in Iran; Tanegashima Space Center in Japan; ImamKhomeini Spaceport of Iran and Mojave Air and Space Port.

The Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape CanaveralSpace Force Station of Florida was the most randomly used launchpad throughout the world in 2020 covering about thirty launches with no failures (fourteen SpaceX Falcon 9 missions were launched from this Space station).

Before 2020, the previous record for launches carried out from the Space Coast which had reached orbit was twenty-nine. It happened in 1966.

(There were thirty-one orbital launch attempts from Cape Canaveral that year. Not only that, but two suborbital tests flights of the Apollo era Saturn 1B launcher were also launched. Thus a total of about thirty-three space launches were held from Florida in 1966) `

China’slaunch stations placed at Jiuquan and Xichangeach accomplished thirteen satellites launched last year. Russia’s Plesetsk Cosmodrome, the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, Rocket Lab’s self-operated launch site in New Zealand, and the Guiana Space Center in South America each had carried out seven launches last year.

Chinese electric automaker Nio is making its mark in the industry. Nio, which is the Chinese electric automaker, which many people look at and say,look this is the company that's going to challenge Tesla in China.

Since its initial public offering onthe New York Stock Exchange, in September 2018,the company’s stock has risen from a52-week low of $2.11 to peak at $57.20 in 2020.

That’s an increase of more than 2,700%.

But this automaker has had its fair share of challenges,including being caught in the middle of U.S.-China trade tensions anddealing with the economic effects of Covid-19.

So, how did Nio, which was at one point on the brink of bankruptcy,rise from the ashes to become a major player in the electric vehicle industry?

In 2015, China’s premier Li Keqiang

announced a ‘Made in China 2025’ planto transform the country from a manufacturing hub of cheap, low-value goods,to one that produced high-tech products in ten areas– one of which was the electric vehicle market.

To that end, the government offered subsidies to startups.

This created a fertile ground for 45-year-old entrepreneur, William Li to grow his startup,

Nio, which he founded at the end of 2014.

Nio secured early investments from tech giants, including Tencent and Baidu,and in 2016 released its first model, the EP9.

It was a flashy race car with a top speed of 194 mph, and a price tag of $1.5 million.

This model raised the profile of the Shanghai-based automaker on the electric vehicle map and among China’s wealthy circles. Four years after it was formed, the company beat its domestic rivalsLi Auto and Xpeng to become the firstto file an international IPO. So unlike Tesla with its Gigafactories,Nio actually doesn’t make its own cars,Instead, it outsources manufacturing to a state-ownedautomaker in Hefei, the capital of Anhui province.

And the differences don’t end there.

Instead of relying on a charging network like Tesla,Nio decided to adopt a different approach to its batteries,a service that many experts have called Nio’s competitive advantage.

Through a network of battery swapping stations,Nio users can exchange their battery for a fully charged one in three minutes, eliminating the wait time,which can be as long as 24 hours for big cars.

As of June 2020, the automaker has established135 power swapping stations in 59 cities in China.

The Chinese government plans to standardize batteryswapping stations in the country, ensuring that all EV ownerscan use common batteries at any facility,regardless of their car brand.

This means that a Nio owner will eventually be able to swapbatteries at a rival’s battery swapping station.

This has allowed manufacturers to sell EVs without a battery,effectively making the purchase much cheaper,while also giving EV owners the option to upgradeto a larger capacity battery in the future.

In August, Nio unveiled a battery subscription service that allowsEV users to choose battery packs of various capacities and pay monthly.

While these services gave Nio a loyal following, the companyhasn’t been immune to the headwinds within the wider auto industry.

As the global economy slowed in 2018, trade tensionsbetween the United States and China were brewing.

Domestically, the Chinese government reduced tax breaks for car owners,weakening demand in the largest automobile market in the world.

These factors led to a 3% global decline in car salesand production fell by 2.4% in 2018.

Faced with mounting debt, management departuresand negative gross margins, Nio was struggling.

As the electric car startup expanded,so too did its costs.

In the third quarter of 2019, some $280 millionwas spent on marketing and flashy showrooms,25% more than the year before,

outpacing its revenue growth of 20%.

To reduce cash burn and stay lean, the company embarked on a cost-cutting campaign, slashing around 2,000 jobs between January and September.

Just one year after its trading debut at $6.26, the perfect stormtanked the company's stock to below $2 at the end of September 2019.

The cash-strapped company couldn’t pay its workers on timeat the start of 2020. But then the tide began to turn.

Help came in the form of a $1 billion lifeline fromthe local government of Hefei,

in return for expanding its existing operations,including the creation of a new headquarters in eastern China.

As China’s economy rebounded after the first waveof the Covid-19 pandemic, so too did Nio.

In March 2020, the Chinese governmentannounced that it would extend its subsidies,and a tax break for new energy vehicleswhich include pure electric and hybrid cars — to 2022.

This has led to a bumper year for EV manufacturers in China, with 1.1 million electric vehicles sold in the first 11 months of 2020, up 3.9 percent from 2019.

Nio delivered over 35,000 vehicles in the same period,more than twice as many as the year before.

But the company got a boost from an unlikely source. Thanks to the world's most valuable automaker,Tesla, Nio's fortunes were turning around.

In 2020, Tesla’s stock price had jumped nearly sevenfold. The surge encouraged investors to look foropportunities in other electric automakers. Some concluded that Nio was

The Future Of Humans Enhancement by Technology

This area is all about what could become ahuman nature?

Certainly we would contain many the values,the experiences that we have asbiological animals.

But looking beyond that whereas digitality,electronics interface with us throughhuman-machine interaction, what could webecome with this type ofimmersivity, transparency almostindistinguishable invisibility of technology?

It's all around us. It has become part of us.

And we will have many different issues about ethics and who we might becomeBut the bottom line of it all iswhat is the future of human enhancemnt,where are we going, who do we wantto become?

I look at it from two perspectives. Number one is life expansionTaking the notion of life extension,looking beyond our limitation of biology, which for thehuman animal is approximatelya 122-123 years, to what we might become through theimplementation of design.

Now one of the most interestinginnate characteristics of human to meis our love of exploration and ourability to innovate.

We're inventors, we love to problem solveand it ties very neatly into designbecause design, as you know,is iterative process, we're constantly reforming, remaking ourconcepts. So that they are not only feasible,they're doable.

Design is all about our problem solving.

The second part of my interest in this area oflife expansion is, as a reseacher -- part scientist, part designer,part artist, part theoritician -looking at how we might developa field for people, who would like to live healthyas long as they can, with as much conscious spirit andproductivity as possible.

The exploration of us and the innovation in ourinsight and also live beyond the limitation of a 122 years.

And you might say: "well, that certainly that'sa long time to live and who would want to live longer than that?"

But many of us do. You take someone who isin their hundreds, who is still vital, who still has atremendous "joie de vivre"

That person ought to live longer if he orshe wants to. And, certainly, you might say what isthe ethics of it, what about haves and the have-nots?

Only the rich can have this? Not so. We know from basic economics thatthe price is driven down. And, certainly, with the idea ofAnd what are we evolving into? Well, part of us is evolving into digitality.

We're data across streamsthrough Twitter, through interfaces,through all sorts of abilitiesto adapt to our environment. So, let's assume, how did all this come around.

I came around by a gentleman called Norbert Wiener. He worked in a concept of cybernetics,and cybernetics certainly dealt with machines,it dealt with warfare, but it also dealt with space exploration.

And one of our great explorationsthat we still drive for,with innovation, beyond any comparisonespecially with the X Prize,is space exploration, mining the asteroids.

But how does this tie into life expansion?

The idea of the cyborg, an old idea,certainly lost its 21st century spin,but the cyborg was aboutthe human and machines integratedso that the human could exist in zero-gravity.

Why? Because zero gravity could affect ourmuscular system and our bone density.

In zero G we would needa different type of body to exist. So, we are not in zero G,but we could becomme in zero G. But where are we?

We are not simply in the biosphere all the time,we're in the cybersphere. We spend just as much time,generally, in our computers working with elements of digitalityas we do with elements of oxygen. So, we take a look at this.

Where are we going?

We are adapting to what we might become. And it is my view, which is the cyborg view,although I'm not a cyberneticist,nor do I value the term cyberg any longer,but it is a great historical route for what we are becoming.

The transhuman is a notion of livingfully and richly through our lifesand adapting, and moving, and envolvingthrough our own abilityto steer our future through the innovationsand explorations in our sciences,technologies and numerous advancesthrough a transdisciplinary perspective.

So, we take a look at our own bodiesand how we’re engineering aspects of it.

We have transplants, implants, we have add-ons,we have enhancements.

Certainly there are over a hundred thousand people eachare waiting for a transplantand many of them have to die because there is no a transplant,there is no solution to it.

So we’re farming out these,we’re developing pigs to grow organs,we’re looking to manufacturing organs andwe’re looking at stamp cells for building our own organsand freezing them for the timewhen we may need to have a transplant.

But what else is there? An example here is prosthetics. Prosthetic devices that enable thosewithout their bodily functions to havevery interesting and sometimes better devicesthan our biological devices.

The only good thing that I can ever saythat comes from any type of war and hatred,is that the engineering and design sensibilityto build prosthetics have given people who have suffereda very stunning leg or an arm.

So where is this all going? What are we talking about here?

As far as a future body, a transhuman body,to live longer outside the biology.

I like to look at it as a type of platform diverse system.

If we’d look at biology as a substrate,we look at cybernetics or electronic digitally as another substrate,what if we could cross between these substrates?

What would it require for us?

We already have avatar bodies in Second Life in the Metaverse,we also have multiple personalities and all of our email exchanges.

And we can become multiple people in different environments.

But on a basis of living longerwe need to look at combining this biosphere that we love so much,that we live in, that we want to protect and prolong,And the cybersphere this other type of environment,this digital world that we become,so familiar with as if it was our own offspringand our parents as well.

So, the people who enjoy thinking about this,as an exploratory adventure,think about who wants this?

Who would want to live longer?

The people who simply do not want to die right now.

We say no one wants, to die right now.

Certainly, I do not want to die right now, but for these of us,who has faced life death situations, we know how fragile we are again,and our base safety net for staying alive is,of course, being with loved ones,having an animal companion, having financial security,having family love and support and being mentally sound,working out, being as healthy as we can for as long as we can.

And if we are going to invest the amount of money that we do todayand health in our own maintenance. Why would we just stop itbecause all of a sudden a 122, a 123 comes aroundand that is the maximum life span that humans have had so far.

So, my option here is to come up with an ideafor a whole body prosthetic that could be an alternative design.

You say: What, why would weback up the brain? Well, certainly,we back up our computerson a daily basis, if noton a minute to minute basis,why not back up our brains?

Aren't we a little bit sillythat we haven't done that yet?

Oh, that's not as easy as that in fact.

Some of the world's leadingcognitive scientists

are woriking in that area,as well as neuro scientists,thinking about how we couldback it up. The whole body prosthetic,because if you have a bodyyou have to have a brain in it.

So we get into the issue ofthe Cartesian issue of dualism.

And looking at if the mindis separate from the body is thatcorrect? Or is the mind in a brainwhich is part of a body?

Or can we just have a disembodied braindealing in cyberspace like an upload?

Or what do we do? Where do we meet here?

Oh, I'm of the different schoolof the thought than the mostof philosophers and theoreticiansin the academic arts whotalk about disembodiment.

That if we're going to cyberspaceas persons we will becomedisembodied agency.

I disagree, I think no matter what substrate we’re in,we will still have some kind of body,we need our perceptual apparatus,we need to have adventure and exploration,not just through our cognitive abilities,but through emotions, through feeling, to experiencing.

So, when we take on a first prototype in the design process,it should it's surely theoretical conseptual conceptand then we build it and then we test it and build it again.

The first time I built the future body prosthetic puma post humanwas in 1997 and it was extremely successful,not monetearly, because it was before it’s timeand I couldn’t build it,but I conceptualized it.

It was a very successful concept.

Now I’m looking at it againbecause technologies come up to the times,back then it was nanobioinfocogno technologies,but today those technologies that I'd worked ontheoretically are now making strides in our own fieldso I have to revisit the whole situation.

So here is my original drawings for puma post humanand, as you've noticed,I dealt with the mind and the body and the brain.

And today I still deal with it.

But first.. the body, then the brain, then personhood,because this is a continuation of our identity, ourself,who we are that we want to preserve,No matter how long we live, no matterwhat circumstances we go through,it is ourself, our person that to havea continuity of self would resolve inyou being suspended overtime wetherit is in the biological systemsemi-biological system or cybernetic system.

So here is my original designin 1997 of the transitional humanand a little of mock-up companyI develop was Ageless Thinking.

And you could see that I came up withdifferent ideas about the skin would regenerated itself.

Well… I met a dermatologist on the plane here.

And he was telling me about a patternin a couple years that it is an injectable with the skincould feasibly developed on its own collagen.

And there is many other issues therewith plastic surgery, with reconstructive surgery,dermatology, nanomedicine coming on board,genetic engineering dealing with the telomeresin our body that shortensas our daughter cells regenerateover and over and then lose ability to regenerate…This is just the beginning.

So, eventually, we could be able to havean MRI tells us if the onset of any type ofwide damage in our brain,and the onset of dementia or senility.

We could look at our bone density and seewhere we’re having a degenerative amount ofof bone loss or muscle loss.

We could look at our spinal column and seewhere some of the bones of the spine are fusing,we may have to go into intervene…These are ways we can see inside the bodyand that’s amazing.

We take it for granted sometimes with the MRI,but we can see inside the body,now we need to talk to the body.

So if we had nanomedicine, we would havelittle computers going to the body and talk to us.

So that’s my brain on the MRI, that’s my body with the bone densityand muscle density and that’s my body talkingabout the future body design.

I think it.. This stage ought to look biologicallike we are today and enhance an old manourselves as we choose.

And they will have issues about morphological freedomwho has a right to enhance andwho ought never to be coursed to enhancebecause the extent of the human enhancementis a personal choice each individual in my view anywayhas a right to determine how long he or she wants to live or can live.

Now you might again say that’s the haves and have-notsso that it’s a economic issue that’s where you live.

Yes that’s very true, but we’ve learned over the yearsthat the cost goes down,the people by a large love to stay aliveand protect their family and keep each other alive.

So what I want to end with todayis looking at some of these robotic designs,and that arm is exquisitely beautifuland these pieces of the bodyare beautiful to look atlike sculpture like Andrey Moraor Jean Hans Arp any of the beautiful designspart of the bodily designs,they have movement, they have sensitivity.

Despite all the five star hotels he could sleep in, the Tesla CEO chooses to sleep at his factories. Not just now and again, but often.

That’s what he did during his recent visit to the Gigafactory under construction in Berlin - Tesla’s first vehicle factory in Europethat will start turning out Model Ys this year.

Interviewer: Where do you sleep tonight?
Elon: Tonight, it’s in the factory.
Interviewer: In the factory? Not in a hotel?
Elon: Well, technically, a conference room in the factory, but yeah.
Interviewer: You sleep in the conference room in the not finished factory tonight?
Elon: Yah, it gives me a good feel for what’s going on.

Interviewer: Alone or...?
Elon: Yah, I assume so.

Kidding aside, he’s been doing this for years.

Including camping on the roof of Tesla’s battery factory in the Nevada desert.

And he showed CBS exactly where he slept at Tesla’s manufacturing plant in Fremont, California.

I sleep on the couch over there. Last time I was here I actually slept literally on the floor because the couch was too narrow.

When things get really intense and I don’t have time to go home and shower and change, so I just sleep here.

Saving time isn’t the only reason he sleeps at work, it’s just his style.

He explains that he doesn’t want to be one of those CEOs in an ivory tower, far removed from the hardships his employees face on the frontline.

He says he wants his pain to be worse than theirs.

There’s no question, his employees have had to endure a lot to get Tesla to where it is today.

The company delivered nearly half a million cars in 2020 - a stunning achievement considering how close it was to bankruptcy a few short years agoas it struggled to mass-produce the Model 3.

In 2018, Tesla planned on producing 5,000 Model 3s every weekbut only managed about 800 a week in the first three months of that year.

Part of the problem was that Tesla relied on too much automation, or, too many robots, too early. And any issue would cause the entire assembly line to stop.

The human staff was also overworked, exhausted, and according to a report in the Guardian, even passing out on the factory floor.

In response to this article, Musk said he cared deeply about the health and safety of his employeesand emphasized that Tesla’s safety record had improved significantly since then.

But shortly after, Tesla was hit by another claim of high injury rates at the factory.

So Musk responded with an all-staff email that’s been applauded by leadership experts.

He wrote: No words can express how much I care about your safety and wellbeing. It breaks my heart when someone is injured building cars and trying their best to make Tesla successful.
He went on to say he’d meet with every injured employee and would "...go down to the production line and perform the same task that they perform.”

It’s not certain whether he actually met with every single injured personbut this hands-on approach was clear evidence that he’s willing to put himself at the very heart of problem-solving.

And sleeping in his factories could go a long way toward inspiring his employees to make Tesla an overwhelming successby helping the world transition to sustainable energy.

Tesla aims to produce 20 million cars a year by 2030 - that’s 40 times what it produced in 2020.

Only an insane amount of hard work will get Tesla there.

Musk says at times he’s clocked in more than 120 hours a week - a work ethic that he adopted early on.

When he and his brother Kimbal founded their first company, Zip2, which was like an internet version of the yellow pages, they only had one computer.

So the website ran during the day while they coded at night.

They also slept at the office because they didn’t have an apartment and showered at the YMCA.

He doesn’t expect his employees to camp out at work but does expect them to spend a lot of waking hours there.

During that painful production ramp-up of the Model 3, staff was working 100 hours a week. That’s the equivalent of 14 hours a day, seven days a week.

Critics say he pushed his workers to the brink. Musk said there was no other way to meet Tesla’s production targets.

The company bounced back and exceeded its delivery goals in the second half of 2019.

Tesla is now the most valuable car company in the world as its stock price continues to soar.

Musk’s rocket company SpaceX is also soaring - literally - as it tests out prototypes of the massive Starship systemthat plans to send people to the moon and Mars.

Even though his companies’ futures look bright, the CEO says it’s no time to slow down.

He once explained that if someone is working 50 hours a week and you’re working 100,you’ll get twice as much done in the course of a year and be that much further ahead.

Perhaps this mentality is the reason that on Glassdoor reviews,only 65% of Tesla employees recommend working there compared with 85% who recommend Apple.

That doesn’t mean people don’t want to be hired at Tesla. They just recognize it’s a demanding place to work.

As Musk himself has admitted, “There are way easier places to work, but nobody ever changed the world on 40 hours a week”.

So his couch-sleeping will probably continue. Though he might find it somewhat more comfortable now.

How many people does it take to makea cup of coffee?

For many of us, all it takes is a shortwalk and a quick pour.

But this simple staple is the resultof a globe-spanning processwhose cost and complexity are far greaterthan you might imagine.

It begins in a place like the remoteColombian town of Pitalito.

Here, family farms have clear cutlocal forests to make roomfor neat rows of Coffea trees.

These shrub-like plantswere first domesticated in Ethiopiaand are now cultivated throughoutequatorial regions.

Each shrub is filled with small berriescalled "coffee cherries."

Since fruits on the same branchcan ripen at different times,they’re best picked by hand,but each farm has its own methodfor processing the fruit.

In Pitalito, harvesters toilfrom dawn to dusk at high altitudes,often picking over 25 kilograms per shiftfor very low wages.

The workers deliver their picked cherriesto the wet mill.

This machine separates the seedsfrom the fruit,

and then sorts them by density.

The heaviest, most flavorful seedssink to the bottom of the mill,where they’re collectedand taken to ferment

in a tub of water for one or two days.

Then, workers wash off the remaining fruitand put the seeds out to dry.

Some farms use machines for this process,but in Pitalito, seeds are spreadonto large mesh racks.

Over the next three weeks,workers rake the seeds regularlyto ensure they dry evenly.

Once the coffee beans are dry,a truck takes them to a nearby millwith several specialized machines.

An air blower re-sorts the seedsby density,

an assortment of sieves filterthem by size,

and an optical scanner sorts by color.

At this point, professionals calledQ-graders select samplesof beans to roast and brew.

In a process called "cupping,"

they evaluate the coffee’s taste, aroma,and mouthfeel to determine its quality.

These experts give the beans a grade,and get them ready to ship.

Workers load burlap sackscontaining up to 70 kilogramsof dried and sorted coffee beansonto steel shipping containers,each able to carry

up to 21 metric tons of coffee.

From tropical ports, cargo shipscrewed by over 25 peopletransport coffee around the worldBut no country imports more coffeethan the United States,with New York City alone consumingmillions of cups every day.

After the long journeyfrom Colombia to New Jersey,our coffee beans pass through customs.

Once dockworkers unload the container,a fleet of eighteen-wheelers transportthe coffee to a nearby warehouse,and then to a roastery.

Here the beans go into a roasting machine,stirred by a metallic armand heated by a gas-powered fire.

Nearby sensors monitor the coffee’smoisture level, chemical stability,and temperature, while trained coffeeengineers manually adjust these levelsthroughout the twelve-minuteroasting cycle.

This process releases oil within the seed,transforming the seeds into grindable,brewable beans

with a dark brown color and rich aroma.

After roasting, workers pack the beansinto five-pound bags,

which a fleet of vans deliver to cafesand stores across the city.

The coffee is now so closeyou can smell it,

but it needs more helpfor the final stretch.

Each coffee company has a head buyerwho carefully selects beansfrom all over the world.

Logistics teams managebean delivery routes,

and brave baristas across the cityserve this caffeinated elixirto scores of hurried customers.

All in all, it takes hundreds of peopleto get coffee to its intended destination—and that’s not counting everyonemaintaining the infrastructurethat makes the journey possible.

Many of these individuals workfor low pay in dangerous conditions—and some aren’t paid at all.

And if yes, then to what extent?

In today’s article, Abhishek and I will try to answer these questions for you. We will use research papers written by eminent scholars.

Specifically, we will look at the impact of reservation in three different areas; public education institutes, government jobs and political representation.

Outputs vs Outcomes

Before talking about the impact of caste reservation, I would like to explain this basic difference to you.

What is the difference between output and outcome?

It is important for you to understand this so that you can understand the content of this article going forward.

These two words sound similar but there is a big difference between the two.

Let’s take the example of Swacch Bharat Abhiyan. What was the target outcome of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan?

What did the scheme actually intended to achieve?

Make India Open Defecation free!

Make it clean, increase sanitation in the country and decrease the number of diseases that occur due to lack of cleanliness.

But how will Swachh Bharat Abhiyan achieve its outcome?

It will be through outputs. The output of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was to construct toilets.

Outputs tell us how effectively a policy has been implemented and on the other hand outcomes tell us the impact of implementing the policy.

It is easy for governments to ask for votes in the name of outputs. This is the reason governments want to focus more on outputs.

With claims like- Look how many toilets we have constructed…look how many free cycles we have distributed to girls.

But in reality if we really want to develop our nation then we should focus on the outcomes.

Did building more toilets result in the nation becoming cleaner? Did dirtiness in the county actually lessen?

Did distributing cycles to girls result in them being more educated?

Similarly, when we talk about the impact of caste reservation in this article, we will first look at the output -whether caste reservation has resulted in larger representation of lower caste in colleges (which is an output) Thereafter we will look at the outcome whether lower caste people got better job opportunities? Have their lives improved?

Have their incomes risen? And has caste discrimination decreased in society?

Outputs in Higher Education

Let’s talk about outputs in higher education first.

Has reservation resulted in increased representation of the marginal groups in higher educational institutes or not?

Article 15 and 16 of the Constitution has given powers to our government to reserve seats in educational institutes and in matters of public employment.

According to population shares, about 22% seats have been reserved for SCs and STs.

So the first question is has reservation resulted in increased representation of the SCs and STs?

Yes, it has increased.

From 1970 to 1990s, this representation has increased for both the groups and according to the latest higher education survey; this representation has increased further as well.

But can we say with utmost guarantee that reservation is the reason behind the increase in representation?

It is possible that due to good economic growth in India, SCs and STs have been uplifted more and this is the reason behind the increase in their representation and not reservation.

If we want, we can speak of it in probabilities but as told by a researcher, we cannot say with guarantee that reservation only is responsible for it.

Despite the increase, we must focus on the fact that the representation share of STs is still lower than their seat reservation number.

One of the most common criticisms of reservation is of the creamy layer.

According to this theory, the SCs and STs that do get reservations do not belong to some poor family but are in fact from a rich family and because of their reservation, the people belonging to the poorer section from the general category do not get seats.

Researchers have looked into this as well.

They found out that the SCs and STs that do get reservations are better off in their own group but their situation is not better than general category people.

The second argument given against reservation in education is that the reserved students have lesser score requirements.

This might help them get a seat but after getting into the college, they would struggle and this seat would be wasted.

In a research conducted in 215 engineering colleges, it was found that there isn’t any evidence that suggests that reserved students are not able to cope up with the syllabus.

Outputs in Government Jobs

Now, let’s talk about public employment.

Let’s get to know whether reservation has resulted in the increase in representation of SCs, STs and other marginal groups in Indian bureaucracy or not.

According to government data, there has been an increase in representation of SCs and STs in government administration.

But when we look at this data in detail and divide the government positions in different levels, we see that SCs, STs do have representation but it is mostly in lower positions.

For example, their representation is near their representation quota only in group C and group D category.

SCs have higher representation in group D positions because many of these people are “Safai Karamcharis” (sanitation workers) In fact, almost 40% Safai Karamcharis belong to the scheduled castes.

A common criticism against reservation in government jobs as well is of the creamy layer.

A researcher investigated the same but found no evidence to support this creamy layer theory.

One more argument that is quoted against reservation in government jobs is that if people from the marginal groups enter governance then the effectiveness of governance will be compromised.

But researchers did not find any evidence regarding this as well.

Two researchers conducted a very interesting study to investigate this.

They considered the data of Indian railways from 1980 to 2002 and studied 15 lakh railway employees.

They wanted to see if reservation affected the productivity of the Indian railways in a negative manner.

After analyzing, they found no such evidence suggesting that the efficiency of the railways were decreasing due to reserved employees.

In fact, in some cases, they found out that the efficiency increased due to the reserved employees.

Outcomes of Reservation

Reservation has resulted in increased representation of disadvantaged groups in public administration and higher education institutes but what has been its impact in their lives?

Let’s get to know about that.

According to research, overall it has had a positive impact in their lives but there is a lot of room for improvement even now.

For example, a research highlighted that post reservation in government jobs, the representation of SCs and STs in salaried jobs increased by 5%.

Another study highlighted that reservation in government jobs has resulted in boosting the morale of OBC students and they started studying more.

Due to reservation, on an average, a student started studying for 0.8 years more.

If we talk about reservation in political seats then we see a mixed impact.

According to one study, reservation in gram panchayat has resulted in decrease in poverty amongst the STs but a similar impact was not seen in SCsAnother paper showed that reservation in politics has not only resulted in more jobs for SCs and STs but government schemes have also started targeting them more.

Another study tried investigating the impact of quotas in panchayat elections.

They found out that because of these quotas the people from the disadvantaged groups get more aid from the MNREGA scheme and there is improvement in their roads, water and education as well.

Another study that was conducted in Rajasthan found that when a SC sarpanch is elected then the entire community benefits in many ways.

If you look at all these studies then you feel like that reservation is quite a good policy tool resulting in so many positive changes.

But we should also remember that reservation cannot change everything.

The same researchers also said that despite a SC Sarpanch, the relationship between different castes did not change much within the village.

And we have seen many such examples that reservation wouldn’t necessarily result in changing the undercurrent of the society.

Recently, we saw a report where a SC panchayat President had to sit on the floor because of her caste in Tamil Nadu.

“The woman panchayat leader there has not been allowed to sit on a chair. She was sitting on the floor and she also alleged that she was also not allowed to hoist the flag.”Many researchers have even talked about the same as well that including quotas in political representations do not guarantee benefit to marginal communities.

A researcher said that to win any panchayat election, a leader needs support from different social groups and this is the reason that many times they would not take such a decision that will only help their group.

Why Reservation are not enough?

Despite these benefits of reservations, there is a huge gap between lower caste and upper caste people today.

Data from 2011 shows that a Brahman adult on an average acquires 5.6 years of more education over the course of his lifetime as compared to a scheduled tribe adult.

This map is from 1954. This shows how people reside on the basis of caste in the country.

Even after 6 decades, there isn’t a huge change in it.

This table shows you a comparison of average income, assets and education level across different caste groups.

You can easily see that forward caste members compared to the rest of population are quite ahead in every aspect.

All these data proves that only caste reservation is not enough to solve the problem of caste discrimination in our country.

And this is not just my opinion.

DR. B R Ambedkar opined the same in his book Annihilation of Caste.

Solutions to Reduce Descrimination

Greater social integration simply means that people from different castes live together in every aspect of life.

Not just lie in the same societies but also participate in similar activities and inter caste marriages also rise.

We gave a great example of the same in the last article that how researchers conducted an experiment where they organised a cricket tournament.

They observed that the teams which had members from different caste had greater sense of friendship which does not happen when all the players in a cricket team belong to similar caste.

Actually schools are one of the best social settings to enhance this integration.

According to another research experiment conducted in Delhi schools found out that the classes where poor and rich kids mingle, the rich kids discriminate lesser and they interact more with poor kids.

And if such interactions happen more is school and colleges then inter-caste marriages will automatically rise in the country consequently resulting in decrease in discrimination.

Another research found out that if women in the country are given the independence to choose their husbands while marrying, 20% of such cases are inter-caste marriage.

But in reality, in the entire country only 6% marriages are inter-caste marriages.

So an interesting connection can be seen here that how giving the right to choose to women i.e women empowerment increases inter caste marriage and also results in reduction in caste discrimination.

This is the reason that some governments have tried promoting the same.

Recently, Odisha government has announced a scheme to incentivise social harmony They launched a Sumangal portal to increase inter-caste marriages in the state.

But this is not just the job of the government alone.

Here, the Police and judiciary too need to take swift action in cases of discrimination.

Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1955 tries to protect SCs and STs from discrimination.

But the evidence that has come to the front suggests the provisions of act have been barely utilised.

The conviction rate is quite low and the backlogs are quite high in such cases.

There was a study conducted of 100 such cases in Andhra Pradesh in 2002-03.

The study found out that the Police usually does not register such cases or pressurise lower caste individuals to compromise and the accused doesn’t get arrested here.

Another good example of improving the system is to not only provide reservation for seats but also offer free coaching to marginalized groups.

One such scheme was launched by the Ministry of Social Justice in 2016 where SCs and OBCs were offered free coaching for UPSC, NEET and JEE exam.

It was reported that more than 10 percent of students who availed the benefits of this scheme cracked these exams.

So these are some solutions/suggestions to improve the reservation system in order to further reduce the caste discrimination in our country and equality flourishes.

Are Reservation against merit?

Some people would argue that reservation is actually against equality because the hard work put in by us in order to secure a seat, our options shrink and an undeserved candidate takes our seat away.

In my opinion, it is quite a narrow perspective to look at the entire situation here.

Imagine, you are competing with one lakh people and you write an exam to get selected on one of the 100 seats.

Amongst these 100 seats, say 50 seats are reserved.

But think about that if you are competing with one lakh people just for 100 sets then how difficult it is in the first place itself.

And if the seats are reduced from 100 to 50 then does that make any difference to the difficulty level?

But imagine if there were 1000 seats instead of 100 for which one lakh people were competing.

If 50% were reserved then you would write the exam for 500 seats but otherwise you were writing for 50 seats.

It is not right to blame reservation for this problem.

If the exam is so competitive and seats are so less then this problem is of our education system.

Ask the government to build more universities, schools and colleges so that seats can be increased.

Or the education system should be overhauled such that people go to other fields and more jobs are available.
