Este capítulo es algo especial, sin duda alguna 100% "made in madrid"... nuestra ciudad, la capital de España, posiblemente el metro mas difícil de Europa y el segundo sistema de metro mas grande nuestro continente, donde no hay tregua alguna con todos esos escritores de graffiti que constantemente intentan, intentan y vuelven a intentar esa misión que tanto cuesta sabiendo que lo mas normal es no acabar gracias a la gran vigilancia y constancia durante 24 horas de todas las cámaras de este sistema y toda su seguridad.

Como todo sigue una linea y una evolución, me gustaría rescatar este par de piezas de Vino y Blue del 2002, cuando se hacia un estilo más tocho, con muchas rallas asteriscos y flechas señalando la pieza y esos enorme 3D. Nose si es la nostalgia o que pero joder ese estilo molava y mucha peña lo hacia por toda Barna y tenia su rollo casi se podía decir que se llego a cocinar un estilo de BCN.

Volvamos a los muros a rescatar este estilo.

TRAIN TRACK MEMORIES

A book by Leo Rivinoja (Incognito Magazine) and Björn Engberg about Stockholm train writing.

The idea to write your name on a train and watch it roll through the city, first became popular in New York in the early seventies. The phenomenon appeared in Stockholm about fifteen years later, since then the city's subway and commuter trains have been painted frequently. But one important thing has changed since the mid-eighties – train writing today attracts little attention.
Once painted trains could roll throughout the city for months, now they are generally taken out of service immediately. The paintings are removed before hardly anyone other than their originators and a couple of rail workers have seen them. What was once a public art form available for everyone to see, has become a private game only accessible to the players.

This collection of private pictures and personal memories from some of the most prolific writers in the history of Stockholm is an attempt to yet again make train writing visible to the general public. The book features writers like Akay, Ape, Beges, Detch, Erir, Healr, Hnr, Kaos, Ribe, Rilo, Skil, Termit, Terror, Triss & Weston.

Dicer is an Old School South London Graffiti Writer, who is still representing the culture, by painting sick Burners, and giving back in the form of his amazing new Self Published "Steel Canvas" 1987-1995 London Underground Train Graffiti book. The book is crammed full of over 250 photographs of rare and unseen Train flicks from the golden era of London Graffiti. Dicer also known for rocking the infamous Battersea/Vauxhall/PatMore London Hall of Fame, took a moment to talk to The Kool Skool about his soon to be Classic Book, and legacy in the London Graffiti Scene.

Hi Dicer, thanks a lot for coming by, for those not familiar with Dicer, could you tell us a little it about yourself?

Well, I've been writing graffiti since around 1985, the story follows along the usual lines of the American invasion of hip-hop into the uk, and myself starting graffiti. Although, I guess I am somewhat different to other London writers in that I didn't go to school with lots of writers and get into painting that way. Instead I simply went out on my own, racked paint, and did it by myself for my own gratification for many years. In 1987, I chose the name Dice, at the time it was more for convenience as 4 lettered names were popular and easy to write. Although it’s always been a bit difficult to bend and shape the letters too much as there's not much you can do with a D. In the early 90’s I battled for supremacy with my pieces on the District & Circle Lines writing Dicer/Diser, by the mid 90s my crew TSM (The Shag Masterz) were competing with the likes of DDS on the trains, in the late 90s disbanded. I painted a lot with Khans STD in the early 2000’s, Since then Ive been painting “freelance” as it were, with anyone and everyone, I still get a kick out of battling people on walls.

Being that you’re a South Londoner, and traditionally the South is often over looked in its place in Graffiti History. Why is it that people seem to sleep on the South?

I guess it’s because historically there were no big halls of fame in the South to attract attention, but also the Holy Grail of train lines (the met) didn’t run down South, having instead a truly underground subway didn’t help attract writers to the area.

Who are some of the South London legends and stories you remember?

When writers used to hit the Buses in South London, (84-86 era), there were some very legendary writers, namely Lazy Lady, Pest, Feend 219, and Dust. It’s a shame some of them didn’t graduate on to the train scene, as they probably would have been as big as Fuel and Prime.

Why should New Schoolers care about the Old School?

Well, I wouldn’t expect anyone to “care”, but they should at least know as it stops their heads getting too big! People don’t realise half the time the stuff their bragging about doing has been done a hundred times before, and better! People were doing full colour top 2 bottom wholecars in 1986, by 1987 every yard had been slapped.

What made you put this book together now?

My main motivation for putting “Steel Canvas” together was just to get the photos in print, before they disappear from history. I’d lost a ton of photos from broken hard drives, and actual photos had degraded, been lost, stolen, and given away. I felt like the curator of a graff museum, and it’s my job to restore these photos for future generations. My secondary goal, was to take graffiti back to looking at photo albums and books. The internet is now so saturated with thumbnails of grainy out of focus “old school” photos, the whole meaning has been lost in translation! Having photos of old school graff in a book is a way to bring it to the people and get them talking about it – people tend to huddle around a book, whereas viewing the internet is almost always a solo pursuit.

That's a really interesting way to think about it. The internet has kind of devalued and even played out the action of looking at graffiti photos, also many writers nowadays have probably never seen a painted train in traffic. I have never seen a lot of the photos in Steel Canvas, whose photos are they, are they all yours?

They are 100% all my own. Any train you see in the book I personally saw running, probably tagged the inside, and occasionally maybe had a piece next to it too! I try to make it clear in the book, that unlike a lot of other publications this is the first time that a single person has made a whole book using (only) their own photos. I think it gives the book a certain authenticity, it would of been so easy to plaster the book full of train photos from my personal archives.

For those of the internet generation, can you explain how writers got photos of other artists?

It was a lot different back before the net. A lot of a writers status was based on rumour and reputation, not actual hard evidence. Photos of trains weren’t banded about like they are now, they were very coveted, and secret. Us later generation writers looked up to writers like Fuel, Prime, Drax, Crash, Cazbee, Hate etc. Not because what they had done (the photos didn't emerge until after the year 2000 on the net), but because we had heard stories of whole trains, top to bottoms, yard chases etc. And to us aspiring train writers, they seemed like gods! You would always meet other writers out on the lines if there was something running that day. During the time period that the book covers, I rarely saw any of the old school train photos that seem so familiar now, and are freely available on the net. Writers would arrange to meet up somewhere like Covent Garden and bring photos along and generally they would swap the ones that were bad angle shots or out of focus keeping the good ones for themselves. Unfortunately, this practice has since backfired, as a lot of the only surviving old school train photos are the ones that the writers discarded in swap meetings, due to the originals being destroyed by BTP after house raids. Over the years even these poor angle shots and out of focus shots have become more prized. So they have been color copied and duplicated to the point were the quality has suffered so much, so the piece is just a blurry blob on a bleached out train. Nowadays we are more clued up because of the internet, we can see exactly how many train pieces so and so crew or writer has done back in the day (or so we think), but we must always bare in mind that whatever you see in photos is only ever 40 - 50% of the whole story. So just imagine how big writers like Kast were in his day!

How important is it for the UK scene to support books like this?

It is important in the sense that it is “your” Subway Art! We’ve never had one, and this is as near to it as there is (at the moment).

How is Steel Canvas selling?

I am happy to say that it has sold surprisingly well. Looking back I was a bit naive to think I would only sell a handful to friends and family, I thought it may get lost in the sea of graff books out there, but people have been very supportive and I thank you all.

As it’s a self-published book, the amount of actual books in print are very low. With the success of Steel Canvas, have you got there any more book in the works?

There are certainly more books in the works, but I can’t tell you exactly what, as I like the element of surprise!

¿Cómo ha cambiado el graffiti desde que empezaste?

Antes, cuando yo empecé a pintar, había, ya sabes como en NYC, reuniones de escritores en los andenes, muchos escritores, 30 o 40, que se reunían en las estaciones subterráneas para tirar fotos, bocetear, compartir tags… Era más abierto.

Pero ahora hay mucha mierda circulando. Demasiados escritores hablando más que pintando. Quiero decir que ahora hay muy buenos escritores también, pero también más mamones.

A parte de pintar… llevas tatuando 14 años…

Sí, me inicié en el tatuaje gracias al graffiti, pero para mi son dos cosas muy distintas. Si no hubiera pintado no hubiera tatuado, por supuesto. Me ayudó mucho con el tema de los colores, las letras, las sombras y los trazos.

Cuando empecé, el tipo que me enseñó veía la forma en la que lo hacía y trataba de enseñarme a su manera. Desde luego aprendí muchísimo, pero de alguna manera también le enseñé yo debido a mi trasfondo de escritor.

Mucha gente no sabe lo grande que es esa comunidad hasta que se dan cuenta…

¿Intentas mezclar ambos mundos?

Por supuesto que los mezclo, los dos. Pero el tatuaje está destinado a la piel de las personas y no puedes hacer cualquier cosa sobre la piel de los demás. El graffiti es libre, puedes hacer lo que te de la gana. El tatuaje es lo que hace que me gane la vida y evidentemente es genial poder vivir de algo que te gusta, pero es un trabajo.

¿Planeas exhibiciones?

Intento viajar tanto como puedo. Hace cinco o seis años empecé a cansarme de mi ciudad (Copenague), los mismos muros, la misma gente… ya sabes, todo. Empecé a sentir bastante angustia interior, así que decidí viajar para encontrarme con la belleza de diferentes ciudades. Eso me hace tener más energía y conocer gente diferente…

Los trenes son un punto importante en tu graffiti… ¿Qué significan para ti?

Para mí, el graffiti real está en los trenes. Es como ir ahí, con la locura, en poco tiempo, y ver el tren en circulación. Pintar muros, hacer throw-ups… está bien, pero no es lo mismo.

Para mí, toda la experiencia es buena. La foto es un extra. Si no tienes la foto, mal, pero al menos sabes que lo hiciste con tus amigos. Estuviste ahí, lo planeaste y lo hiciste. Y el día después, no importa lo que pase, tendrás una sonrisa en la cara.

¿Puedes explicarnos lo importante que es para ti ver el panel circulando?

Es importante porque está vivo, va desde el punto A al punto B. Con un muro la gente tiene que ir a verlo… con un tren no importa si la gente quiere verlo o no, el irá a ellos y volverá en su cara.

Hice muchos trenes sólo por hacerlos. A diez metros del lavadero… pero los hice.

¿Qué cualidades admiras de un escritor?

Originalidad. Y el hecho de pasar un buen rato. Sé que todo el mundo tiene influencias de todo el mundo, pero puedes hacerlo por ti mismo. Tratar de poner algo propio.

Para mí el graffiti es un mundo aparte. Puedo relajarme, sin jefe, sin reglas… pintamos lo que pintamos y nos divertimos.

¿Modelo de tren favorito?

La peor cosa que ha sucedido en la historia del graffiti danés es el cambio del viejo S-train al nuevo. De los trenes más bellos a los más feos. Existe la teoría de que los tipos que diseñaron el nuevo modelo de S-train lo hicieron para joder a los escritores de graffiti. Yo no lo creo.

Es feísimo, es como una salchicha. Conozco algunos escritores que no quieren pintar este modelo ya que los trenes son curvados y no se pueden pintar cómodamente.

Hay que pintar bien grande para que la pieza parezca recta y si pintas desde andén, la pieza tienen que ser flotante.

En general me gustan muchos modelos de trenes…

La primera vez que vi fotos de la garra de Claw alucine con la potencia que tenia el logo y como lo podía adaptar en cualquier sitio siempre junto a sus partner Miss 17 que al principio pense que podría ser la misma persona y todo. Más tarde dio la cara en uno de mis documentales favoritos despues del mitico style wars en Infamy que veiamos a una claw evolucionando al mundo de las responsabilidades de crear una familia; casa, facturas y rutinas. Haciendo la pregunta que mucha gente se a ido planteando: ¿ Es hora de dejar el graffiti ?

Posteriormente o no se si antes vimos un joya de libro que saco "bomb shell" que para mi fue algo fresco y muy personal cada vez que lo veo descubro algo nuevo entre tanto detalle de cosas.

Y bueno ahora la vemos en este vídeo más reciente llevando graffiti y familia de la misma mano.

Este es el famoso muro que pinto Futura en el año 1989, algunos datos curioso que si no recuerdo mal aparecen en el libro pioneros del graffiti:

Futura realizó una exposición en una galeria de la zona, el escritor Biz le ayudo con los rellenos, Ni siquiera le dio por blanquear la pared. utilizó pintura de una tienda que todavía esta por arco del triumfo salen como unos tigres.
Una vez terminó el mural la pintura se la dio a Biz y Fasim que posteriormente realizarían murales míticos.

Para no hacer un post de todo lo que me ha llamado la atención estos días lo resumo de forma rápida en uno.

Ahora que esta tan de moda el anti-style o estilo más dejado que tanta influencia esta dando algunos nombre punteros de la escena y que ahora todo el mundo lo ve como algo "Nuevo", hablaremos del colectivo Cap que ya lo hizo fresco en su día con cantidad de piezas muy originales y dejando de lado todos esos conceptos e ideales del buen graffiti Amerricano. Lo que si no recuerdo mal este grupo se disolvió o algo así:

El libro del escritor Honet ya esta publicado con cantidad de material indoor y outdoor con sus personajes y su estilo nos deleitaran en 80 páginas. Una compra casi obligada para los fan-boys del estilo el precio me parece de lo más correcto lo que cerca de 10€ de gastos de envio no tanto

Primer metro pintado en Hong Kong

Corría el año 1996 y Loomit y Chintz, realizan un viaje a Asia sin quererlo en busca de nuevos modelos pintan por primera vez en la historia el metro de Hong kong. Posteriormente envían la foto a una revista llamada Bomber Megazine.

"Según apunta el pie de foto no fue tan fácil como podemos pensar"

Hoy 16 años después recuperamos ese momento en forma de foto.
