Callaway Gardens blooms should be spectacular in one week

The cherry trees are in bloom and other plants and shrubs are showing nice color at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia.

Noted meteorologist Kurt Schmitz was at the gardens today and reported that the azaleas are coming in a little slow this year, but should be really nice in about one week. Mid-April should be quite spectacular.

Located on the beautiful rolling hills at Pine Mountain between Atlanta and Columbus, Callaway Gardens is one of the nation's most beautiful places. They were conceived by Cason J. Callaway in 1930. He discovered a rare native azalea growing in an area of worked-over farmland that year. With his wife, Virginia Callaway, bought the site and launched an ambitious project to create one of the world's most scenic gardens.

A labor of love for nearly 75 years, Callaway Gardens has achieved the dream of its founders. The scenery is spectacular and hundreds of thousands of people visit each year.

Historical research reveals new proof of Georgia monster!

Domain of a River Monster?

A search of nautical articles from 19th century newspapers has revealed new proof of a sea monster or river monster that many say inhabits the area around Darien on the Georgia Coast!

The Altamaha-ha, as it is called by locals, is a giant creature often seen in the channels, creeks and old rice canals of the Altamaha River estuary near Darien. Claims of its existence burst onto the scene during the 1980s when fishermen reported seeing the monster. They described it as a 30-foot long creature with flippers like a seal.

Eyewitness stories of 20th century Altamaha-ha sightings are common, but a new research project has revealed that two sightings of the creature were documented in the 182s!

A sea captain named Delano reported that he saw a monster in 1826 and again in 1830 while sailing along the coast of Georgia in his schooner, the Eagle.

The first sighting was in Doboy Sound, which separates Sapelo Island from the mainland of Georgia and connects to the Altamaha River not far from Darien. The second sighting, in 1830, was off St. Simons Island just south of the mouth of the Altamaha.

The discovery of the new accounts, which are unveiled in an article at ExploreSouthernHistory.com, reveal that people have been seeing something strange in and around the Altamaha River for nearly 200 years!

Civil War burning of Darien was branded a war crime by both armies

On June 11, 1863, Union forces led by Col. James Montgomery burned the historic town of Darien, Georgia, to the ground.

There were no Confederate soldiers in Darien when the atrocity took place, only women, children and the elderly. The city was shelled before it was torched and one woman had a hole torn in her dress by a cannon ball but miraculously was not injured.

Among the regiments taking part in the burning of Darien was the famed 54th Massachusetts Infantry, a Union regiment composed of black soldiers. Its commander, Col. Robert Gould Shaw, called the incident a "dirty piece of business." He had objected to the action, but Montgomery had directed that his orders be carried out, telling Shaw that Southerners must be "swept away by the hand of God, like the Jews of old."

Shaw protested the incident to his superiors in the Union army, questioning the honor and legality of the wanton destruction of a town occupied only by civilians.

Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard also protested the incident in a July 1863 letter to Union General Quincy A. Gillmore:

...Ravaging and burning private property are acts of licentiousness unauthorized by the laws of war and the belligerent who wages war in that manner must justly...be regarded as carrying on war like a furious barbarian.

Gillmore's response was to give Montgomery command of a brigade during the coming invasion of Florida that culminated at the Battle of Olustee on February 20, 1864.

War of 1812 on the Georgia Coast

The first tells the story of the British Raid on St. Simons Island and the other the virtually unknown story of the Battle of the St. Mary's, the last land battle of the War of 1812.

Georgia was the focus of the last campaign of the War of 1812. As a major British army moved against New Orleans in December 1814, a second amphibious force struck Cumberland Island on the Georgia Coast. Commanded by Rear Admiral George Cockburn, the same officer who had burned Washington, D.C., British forces landed on Cumberland on January 11, 1815. Two days later they took the U.S. Army battery and fort at Point Petre (Point Peter) near St. Mary's in a small but sharp battle.

Then, near the end of January 1815, Cockburn ordered his forces to invade St. Simons Island. Coming ashore on the island's southern end, they raided homes and plantations while liberating African American slaves and inviting them to join the British military.

Old Fort Frederica, on the west side of the island, became the command post for the operation and was the scene of one of the largest military emancipations of slaves in Georgia history.

Sailing vessel on the St. Mary's River

The final offensive action of the War of 1812 took place along Georgia's southern border on the St. Mary's River. A small flotilla of seven barges and a captain's gig rowed up the river to destroy the American outpost of Camp Pinckney near what is now Folkston.

On February 24, 1815, the British Royal Marines and sailors were attacked by U.S. Army troops and "Patriot" revolutionaries from Spanish Florida in what is known as the Battle of the St. Mary's. The action took place after the Battle of New Orleans, the Battle of Point Petre (Point Peter) and the Second Battle of Fort Bowyer, all of which have been labeled by various historians as the last battle of the War of 1812. So far as is known, however, British and American land forces never fought against each other again after the Battle of the St. Mary's.

Night at the Museum at Andersonville on Nov. 16

An outstanding event is set for Andersonville National Historic Site and the National Prisoner of War Museum on the evening of November 16.

The park and museum will host "Night at the Museum." The event offers an extremely rare opportunity to visit the museum and prison site after dark.

Special films will be shown in the museum There will be a special presentation on the 15 American Indian men from Company K, 1st Michigan Sharpshooters who were held prisoner at Camp Sumter (Andersonville). Plus the path to the prison site will be illuminated with lanterns and you will be able to visit the reconstructed northeast corner of the historic prison to interact with living history volunteers who will be reenacting life at the Civil War stockade during the winter of 1864-1865.

Stories of ghosts, monsters and "things that go bump in the night" are important in Southern culture and folklore.

Whether you believe in such tales or not, they were commonly told by our ancestors. Newspapers of the 19th century, in fact, often reported ghost and "wild man" (Bigfoot) sightings along with the other important news of the day.

Surrender of Gen. George H. Stoneman at the Battle of Sunshine Church (149th Anniversary)

Sunshine Church Battlefield - Round Oak, Georgia

149 years ago today on August 1, 1864, Maj. Gen. George H. Stoneman became the highest ranking Union officer to surrender during the entire War Between the States (or Civil War).

Stoneman's surrender took place on a hilltop 10 miles north of Gray, Georgia, at the end of the Battle of Sunshine Church. The engagement, which had begun the previous day, was one of the greatest Union disasters of the Atlanta Campaign.

Maj. Gen. George H. Stoneman

The Northern politician/general had left Decatur on July 27, 1864, at the head of a column of 2,104 officers and men and only two pieces of artillery. His objective - as approved by Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman - was to break the railroad between Atlanta and Macon and then liberate the thousands of Union prisoners of war being held at Camp Oglethorpe (Macon) and Camp Sumter (Andersonville).

Sherman warned Stoneman, however, to let caution be his guide. He was to focus first on breaking the railroad, but he was not to try to make the long ride to Andersonville unless he was all but assured of success. The cavalry commander did not heed Sherman's advice and paid for his mistake with his reputation.

Driving south from Decatur, Stoneman and his men broke the railroad and did as much damage as possible, but also unleashed a fury of terror on civilian families, particularly women and children. Their targeting of civilians outraged people across the South and in particular outraged the Georgia Reserves and Militia assembling to meet them at Macon.

Confederate Earthworks at Dunlap Hill

Instead of sweeping aside reserves and militia as he appears to have expected to do, Stoneman ran into a buzzsaw when he reached Macon. Maj. Gen. Howell Cobb commanded the well-fortified Confederate forces at the Battle of Dunlap Hill on July 30, 1864. The Federals tried a poorly organized attack up the Clinton Road, but Cobb's forces drove them back and the sun set to the sound of "rebel yells" coming from the Confederate earthworks on the Dunlap Farm and at nearby Fort Hawkins.

It was then that Stoneman made the mistake that would destroy his reputation. Instead of immediately falling back to the safety of Sherman's army, he began looking for another way to get across the Ocmulgee River to continue his planned raid on Andersonville - a ride that would make him a hero across the North if he could complete it with success.

Brig. Gen. Alfred Iverson

Gen. Cobb, however, outsmarted his Union counterpart by sending Brig. Gen. Alfred Iverson with a large force of Confederate cavalry to take up a position between Macon and Sherman's army.

Iverson, who had not performed well at the head of an infantry brigade at the Battle of Gettysburg the previous year, was in his element as a commander of cavalry and was especially ready to carry out Cobb's orders. He had grown up in Clinton and knew the roads, farms and woods of Middle Georgia like the back of his hand. Swinging around behind Stoneman, he chose the site for the coming battle in an area of ravines, hills, woods and farms about 10 miles north of Gray and just south of the community of Round Oak. A small rural chapel named Sunshine Church stood nearby.

When Stoneman learned that Confederate cavalry was moving to cut him off, he fell back from Macon to try to get to safety before it was too late. He reached Sunshine Church on July 31, 1864, to find that he had waited too long. Iverson was entrenched along a ridge cutting off his route of retreat.

The Union general tried to cut his way through, but Iverson was too much for him. A fierce battle raged through the ravines, hollows and ridges at Sunshine Church. Things got worse for Stoneman when troops sent north by Cobb to attack him from behind appeared to his rear. With Confederates now holding the ridge ahead of him and coming up from behind, he decided he was trapped.

During the night of July 31-August 1, he met with his senior officers and ordered two of his brigades to try to cut their way out and escape while he remained behind with the rest of his men to sacrifice himself and buy time. They urged him not to resort to such action, but George Stoneman was already a a defeated man.

Capron's and Adams' brigades did break out (although Capron's brigade was soon cut to pieces at the Battle of King's Tanyard near Athens). Stoneman held on a hilltop - known today as Stoneman's Hill - for a short time before surrendering to Iverson. He barely escaped being hanged from the nearest tree by the Confederates, who were infuriated over the attacks on civilians carried out by the Union raiders.

149 years ago today, George H. Stoneman began his journey to a Confederate prisoner of war camp. It would be months before he was released and he holds the dubious distinction of being the highest ranking Union officer captured during the four years of bloody war.

Today is the 149th anniversary of the day that "Stoneman's cavalry came to tear up the tracks again" at Macon, Georgia (to borrow a line from the old song, "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down").

Confederate Gen. Howell Cobb was waiting at Macon with a force of Georgia Reserves, militia and a few regular troops. With them he would turn on Union Gen. George H. Stoneman who was raiding south from near Atlanta with 2,000 men in hopes of liberating the Federal prisoners of war at Camp Oglethorpe in Macon and Camp Sumter at Andersonville.

The action, fought on the northern edge of Macon and in part on the grounds of today's Ocmulgee National Monument, is remembered today as the Battle of Dunlap Hill or Battle of Dunlap's Farm. A Confederate victory, it ended any hopes Stoneman had of riding on to Andersonville and instead set in motion a change of events that would lead to him becoming the highest ranking Union officer captured during the entire Civil War!

A preliminary action to the coming Battle of Sunshine Church, but an important encounter that turned the tide of Stoneman's Georgia Raid, the Battle of Dunlap Hill was a significant event in the history of the Atlanta Campaign.

New Georgia State Park set to open on Lake Lanier!

Lake Lanier’s Don Carter State Park to open July 15

First Georgia State Park and newest beach to open on Lake Lanier

GAINESVILLE, GA., July 8, 2013 -- Lake Lanier fans can look forward to a new place to play this summer when Don Carter State Park opens on July 15. Georgia’s first state park on the 38,000-acre reservoir will feature camping, boat ramps, fishing, picnicking, playgrounds, hiking and a large swimming beach. Parking is $5 and most day-use activities are free.

Situated on the north end of the reservoir, the 1,316-acre park offers access to a quiet section of the normally busy lake. Swimmers will enjoy the large beach with sloped lawn and bath house. New boat ramps provide quick access to the lake, and anglers can prepare their catch at a fish-cleaning station. A 1.5-mile paved trail welcomes hikers, bikers and strollers to explore surrounding hardwoods, while a two-mile trail can be explored on foot.

Don Carter State Park offers overnight getaways as well. A modern campground with hot showers accommodates RVs, while another camping area is reserved just for tents and hammocks. Although the park will soon accept reservations, campsites will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis during the first few weeks of opening.

Those who prefer a soft bed over a sleeping bag can look forward to the eight rental cabins, opening later this summer. The two-bedroom cabins are perched on wooded hillsides near the lake, with rocking-chair porches and fully equipped kitchens.

Don Carter State Park offers a bargain getaway on Lake Lanier. Visitors pay $5 for parking, and most activities – including swimming – are free. Campsites range from $15 to $29, and cabins will be $110 to $160. Leashed dogs are welcome on trails and in the campground, but not in the visitor center and most cabins. Covered picnic shelters rent for $45 and are perfect for family reunions, birthday parties and casual receptions. Georgia’s newest state park is named in honor of Don Carter, the longest serving member (29 years) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources board.

ATLANTA, June 10, 2013 -- June is “National Great Outdoors Month,” and Georgia’s State Park system is asking citizens to help crown “America’s Favorite Park” and win a $100,000 grant for outdoor recreation. The national contest is part of Coca-Cola’s America Is Your Park campaign which encourages families to get active outdoors. Anyone can vote online at www.Coke.com/parks through July 15.

“We know that Georgians are passionate about their favorite state parks, and we’re asking for their help,” State Parks Director Becky Kelley. “E-mail your friends, post links on Facebook, and send out Tweets. Liberty County, just south of Savannah, is one of the best places in the nation to explore the history of the American Revolution.

Fort Morris State Historic Site - Located at old Sunbury east of Midway, Fort Morris was built during the American Revolution to protect the town that once was the second busiest seaport on the southern part of the U.S. Atlantic coast.

The fort was besieged by the British in November 1778 and became a landmark of American history when its commander, Col. John McIntosh, responded to a demand for surrender with defiant words, "Come and take it."

The British commander, Lt. Col. L.V. Fuser, didn't have the nerve and instead retreated.

Sunbury Cemetery in Liberty County, Georgia

Ghost Town of Sunbury - Just a few hundred yards from Fort Morris State Historic Site, Sunbury was an important Georgia seaport of the colonial era. At one point it rivaled nearby Savannah.

The town was the scene of battles and skirmishes throughout the Revolutionary War and it was the British occupation of Sunbury that started the community on its long road to disappearance. So many people fled that by the end of the war, Sunbury was a mere shell of its former self.

Today, besides the earthworks at Fort Morris, all that remains are a few old roads and the historic Sunbury Cemetery.

Midway Congregational Church - Founded in 1752 by Congregationalists who moved down from Dorchester, South Carolina, Midway Congregational Church was often called the Midway (or "Medway") Meeting House during the American Revolution.

A community meeting at the church in 1775 resulted in the election of Lyman Hall as one of Georgia's representatives to the Second Continental Congress. He went on to become one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Fighting took place 1.5 miles south of the church in 1778 when outnumbered Patriot forces tried to fight oncoming British troops at the Battle of Midway Church. Col. James Screven was mortally wounded in that battle and is buried at Midway Cemetery.

The British burned the original church building after the battle, but it was rebuilt in 1792 when the current structure was completed.

Jackie Robinson Birthplace

Jackie Robinson, the famed player who became the first African American of the modern era to play major league baseball, was born in a sharecropper's house in rural Grady County, Georgia.

The chimney of the house still stands and can be seen along with a historical marker at the birthplace site on a country road about 11.5 miles south of Cairo, Georgia, and 22 miles north of Tallahassee, Florida.

Born Jack Roosevelt Robinson in 1919, Jackie Robinson spent the first years of his life in a frame house occupied by his family. His father was a sharecropper. This system, under which men, women and sometimes children, worked in the fields in exchange for a share of the crop had been introduced in the South during the Reconstruction era by the U.S. Government as a way to get the farms back into operation at a time when hard money was in very short supply.

The Reconstruction era government authorities eventually went away or were driven out, but the sharecropping system they imposed on poor whites and blacks in the South continued on well into the 20th century.

Robinson first learned about life watching his father work in such a system. When his father left the family, his mother picked up her children - including the young Jackie Robinson - and moved them away in search of a better life. He went on to play baseball, basketball, football and track at UCLA and eventually became the famed player who broke the color barrier in Major League baseball.

The official observance of the St. Patrick's Day weekend stepped off in Savannah this afternoon with the Jasper Green Ceremony at Madison Square.

Savannah is home to one of the largest St. Patrick's Day parades and celebrations in the world. Hundreds of thousands of people will make it to the city to join in the celebration, which has been observed in the city since at least 1813. So far as is known, the first parade there was held in 1818.

The main day of events will be tomorrow (Saturday, March 16th), with the annual St. Patrick's Day Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist starting at 8 a.m. and the big parade itself stepping off at 10:15 a.m.

Battle-scarred walls of Fort Pulaski

One of the best preserved and most significant of the nation's antebellum coastal fortifications can be explored at Fort Pulaski National Monument near Savannah, Georgia.

Built on Cockspur Island near the mouth of the Savannah River, Fort Pulaski was a massive five-sided masonry fort designed to protect the vital port of Savannah from foreign attack. Instead, the only guns ever turned on it were those of the United States itself.

The fort was battered into submission during a two day battle in April 1862, an engagement that forever ended the era of masonry seacoast forts. Advancements in artillery had surpassed the ability of structures like Fort Pulaski to stand up to a sustained bombardment from rifled cannon.

During the final year of the war, the fort also achieved a dubious distinction as the site of the dungeon where the Confederate prisoners of war of the Immortal Six Hundred were intentionally starved and tortured.

Gen. Beau Lee predicts Six More Weeks of Winter

Georgia's official weather predicting groundhog has defied the forecast of his Northern rival and seen his shadow. That means, according to Gen. Beau Lee, six more weeks of winter.

Gen. Lee is the official groundhog in residence at Yellow River Game Ranch on Highway 78 just east of Stone Mountain, Georgia. Independent verification indicates that, as usually is the case with Southerners, he is far more accurate than Pennsylvania's Punxutawney Phil.

The Pennsylvania "seer of seers" did not see his shadow this morning and says an early spring is on the way. But in Georgia, Gen. Lee says not to believe it. According to his official Twitter feed, we are in for six more weeks of winter.

For those who keep count of such things, Gen. Lee has a 94% track record of accuracy. And that's something no Northern groundhog can match! Punxutawney Phil, in fact, is right only 39% of the time.

SAPELO ISLAND, GA, November 29, 2012 -- Visiting Georgia’s Sapelo Island is a rare treat in itself, but visiting during the holidays can be a special opportunity. This December, the island’s Reynolds Mansion is opening its doors for seasonal dining and tours. Reached only by ferry, the Reynolds Mansion is a historic home normally open only to private group retreats.

During the holidays, day visitors can explore this historic home and pristine island during two meals, either brunch or lunch. Pancake brunch is offered on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, followed by a tour of the unique home. A baked chicken lunch is offered Monday, Tuesday and Thursday – including tours of the mansion, island, beach, lighthouse and Hog Hammock community. While touring the home, visitors will see the famed “circus room,” murals by Athos Menaboni, a bowling alley with original wooden bowling pins and the original 1850s pool table.

The Reynolds Mansion has a rich history dating back more than 200 years. The original home was built by Thomas Spalding, an architect, statesman and plantation owner who purchased the south end of the island in 1802. After the Civil War, the mansion fell into ruin and was later rebuilt by Detroit automotive engineer Howard Coffin in 1912. Tobacco heir Richard Reynolds purchased the property in 1934 and allowed the University of Georgia to use its facilities for marine research. Following Reynolds' death in 1964, the mansion and most of the island were obtained by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Today, the DNR operates the Reynolds Mansion as a group rental facility, while day visitors can take guided tours. The university’s marine research facilities are still located on the island, and descendants of former slaves continue to live in Hog Hammock community.

The cost is $10 for the ferry ride, plus $15 for brunch or $30 for lunch. Georgia's Forgotten Conflict - The First Seminole War of 1817-1818

On this date (November 20th), 195 years ago, the last men of the primary force of the 4th and 7th U.S. Infantry regiments arrived at Fort Scott, Georgia. It was the signal event that led to the first encounter of the long and bloody Seminole Wars.

While the Seminole Wars are most often associated with Florida, they actually began in Georgia as a result of a confrontation between the army officers at Fort Scott on the Flint River and the powerful chief Neamathla (Eneah Emathla, "Fat Warrior") of the nearby Creek Indian village of Fowltown. Both the fort and the village were located near Bainbridge in what is now Decatur County, Georgia.

Over coming days I will trace the history of the First Seminole War in Southwest Georgia and North Florida, but it was 195 years ago today that Major General Edmund P. Gaines gave the fateful order that would open a series of wars that would continue for forty years, claim thousands of lives and cost the treasure of the United States hundreds of millions of dollars.

The battle of wills between General Gaines and Neamathla had developed over the attempted enforcement by the United States of the terms of the Treaty of Fort Jackson. Signed primarily by the Upper Creeks in 1814, the treaty brought an end to the Creek War of 1813-1814. In exchange for peace, the Creeks agreed to surrender large swaths of territory to the United States. Among the lands ceded was all of Southwest Georgia below Fort Gaines. Under orders from their superiors, General Gaines and his subordinates tried to enforce the treaty by requesting a conference with Neamathla to arrange for the removal of his people from their town site on the ceded lands.

Neamathla, however, had not signed the Treaty of Fort Jackson and did not consider himself bound by it. He informed first Major David E. Twiggs and later General Gaines himself that the land in Georgia below the Flint River was his and that he was "directed by the powers above to defend it" and would do so. After sending his message of refusal, he declined to meet with the army officers at Fort Scott indicating that he had nothing more to say on the matter.

With the arrival of the 4th and 7th Infantries at Fort Scott on November 19-20, 1817, Gaines found himself with a sufficient force to arrest the defiant chief and bring him to the post by force for a conference. His original orders are preserved today at the National Archives:

The hostile character & conduct of the Indians of the Fowl Town, settled within our own limits, rendering it absolutely necessary that they should be removed, you will proceed to the town with the detachment assigned you, and remove them. You will arrend and bring the chiefs and warriors to this place, but should they oppose you, or attempt to escape, you will in that event treat them as enemies. Your men are to be strictly prohibited, in any event, from firing upon, or otherwise injuring women and children.

You will return to this place with your command as soon as practicable.

P.S. Should you receive satisfactory information that any considerable number of the neighboring Indians have joined those of Fowltown, you will in that event immediately return to this place without making any further attempt to execute the first above written order.

The orders were issued to Major David E. Twiggs, who had commanded Fort Scott from July 1817 until the arrival of General Gaines in November. He was assigned a force of 250 men from the 4th and 7th Regiments and on the night of November 20, 1817, marched out from the walls of the fort and started up the west or north side of the Flint River for the old crossing point at present-day Bainbridge.

The Seminole Wars would begin the following morning.

This annual festival highlights why we are thankful for nature's plants like sugar cane. Watch us grind sugar cane and make cane syrup. Come & Take It! -- Thankful for the American Revolution

Show appreciate for our country by joining this annual American Revolution encampment. It commemorates Colonel John McIntosh's defiant reply to a British demand for surrender: "Come & Take It!" Meteors and More: Appreciating the Night Sky

Fall Harvest Candlelight Hike to the Mill

Sweetwater Creek State Park, Lithia Springs, GA
Join us for this mile-long, moderately difficult night hike down to the rapids of Sweetwater Creek. We will go inside the Civil War-era textile mill ruins where we will enjoy hot cider and hot chocolate. Candle lanterns will be provided. No children under 6 years or dogs permitted. Walk Off That Turkey Hike

Turkey Stroll at Buck Shoals

Burn a few calories and share this beautiful park with holiday guests. This is not a "turkey trot" fun run; instead this is a leisurely 1.5-mile stroll around Crean Lake at Buck Shoals, a future state park in White County. Historic New Manchester History Hike

Gold in Them There Hills! - Gold Mines of the North Georgia Mountains

America's first major gold rush took place not in California in 1849, but in Georgia twenty years earlier!
The great Georgia Gold Rush was sparked in 1829 (although some say the actual discovery was made the previous year) when news spread that gold had been found in the mountains about thirty miles north of Gainesville, Georgia. This is in the area of the present-day town of Dahlonega.

Men hoping to "strike it rich" flooded into North Georgia from all over the fledgling United States, much to the chagrin of the Cherokee Indians who owned much of the gold territory. The Cherokee, however, were forced west at bayonet point on the Trail of Tears in 1836-1838 and the entire gold country was opened to the whites once and for all.

A Congressional report indicates that by the summer of 1829 - even before the forced removal of the Cherokee - as many as 3,000 men were prospecting for gold in the mountains. They primarily used pans or sluices to extract the precious yellow metal from stream and creek beds and the amount the found was impressive. By 1830, hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of gold had been found (in 19th century dollars).

The wealth of the Georgia gold fields led towns such as Dahlonega and Auraria to spring up almost overnight. The U.S. Government even built a branch U.S. Mint in Dahlonega and turned out over $6,000,000 in coins there in just 23 years.

The gold fever in Georgia was already wavering by 1849 when a new strike in California sent miners flooding west, but gold was still coming out of the hills. In an effort to encourage miners to stick it out and dig deeper, the assayer for the Dahlonega branch mint took to the steps of the old Lumpkin County courthouse, pointed to the surrounding ridges and exclaimed, "There's gold in them there hills!" The phrase became an important part of American culture.

There was still gold in the hills and millions more would be extracted. People still find it there today, in fact, and the U.S. Forest Service even allows the public to pan for a little of their own in the Chattahoochee National Forest!
