Sheep Book Review: Lair of the Lion by Christine Feehan

Lair of the Lion, by Christine Feehan, is a stand alone story. *in singsong voice* Tale as old as time...song as old as rhyme....bet you know the rest. Lair of the Lion is a new take on the old story of Beauty and the Beast, but as mentioned in the book description this version is much darker and a LOT steamier.

So let's try a new take shall we? I'd like to think it's more of a Lion Witch and Wardrobe saga. Lion= the dude, Witch= lady that cursed him, Wardrobe= for his sexy young Italian chick.

Lion dude: "Hey so uh, wanna check out my lair? Right this way. Don't mind the claws baby"

Italian chick: "Okay, btw I'm a total Virgin!"

Ha! Ok, that was totally for my enjoyment so on to the review!

Plot:

The Beast . . .
Rumor said the powerful Nicolai DeMarco could command the heavens, that the beasts below did his bidding . . . and that he was doomed to destroy the woman he took as wife. It was whispered he was not wholly human—as untamed as his tawny mane and slashing amber eyes.

The Beauty . . .

Impoverished aristocrat Isabella Vernaducci would defy death itself to rescue her imprisoned brother. She’d even brave the haunted, accursed lair of the lion—the menacing palace of legendary, lethal Don Nicolai DeMarco.

The Beast has lived in the DeMarco men since a curse cast long ago by a witch, and now the curse has passed on to our leading man. He's tall, dark, stealthily and the devil all wrapped into one. A leader and hero any lady will be willing to fall for, cursed or not the don has a lot going for him, plus it helps he's shacked up in the biggest castle around. Forced to find a way to save her older brother from imprisonment, Isabella rides day and night (and somehow this took two years) to the castle of the don to ask for his help in saving her bro.

The story picks up right away with some creepy things taking place in the cursed lands. As things move along more twists and turns are added fueling the overall mysterious plot-line. While I enjoyed this as a whole I would have liked a little more definition on why sometimes the don was seen as a beast and other times he's seen as the man he is. It's explained but more as a hand-wave to get us back to the action. Aside from that Isabella keeps being cast into every life or death situation you can image: kidnapping, trapped, attacked, drugged, stalked etc etc etc.

What I did like, and there is a bunch of likes, was the dialog between our main two. And especially Isabella's ability to embrace her new surroundings even while going up against some pretty awful scenarios. I could have used less fainting/crying and more cojones but overall it wasn't awful on the character's part. It's a great mix of romance and goth thriller, jealousy and betrayal all wrapped into one, it was definitely entertaining even with some small flaws here and there. THIS is why I read Christine's work, fun sexy and entertaining.

Overall this is a well written satisfying read coupled with a nice paranormal feel and heavy B&B influence, it's one for the adults to love. Kids, it's time for bed!

Sheep Movie Review: Safe House directed by Daniel Espinosa

Safe House, directed by Daniel Espinosa and starring Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Brendan Gleeson, Vera Farmiga and Sam Shepard is an action-packed suspense-mystery that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

Plot:

Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds star in the action-thriller Safe House. Washington plays the most dangerous renegade from the CIA, who comes back onto the grid after a decade on the run. When the South African safe house he's remanded to is attacked by mercenaries, a rookie operative (Reynolds) escapes with him. Now, the unlikely allies must stay alive long enough to uncover who wants them dead.

Like a good conspiracy theory movie that's also jam-packed with action and bone-crunching fight scenes? Then you'll really like Safe House. Denzel and Ryan are two compelling characters to watch in this one, both coming from different points of view but with equally gripping storylines. This film gives you absolutely no time to "settle in" or even get bored for that matter. It's paced perfectly to carry you along and gradually unravel the mystery of this story.

Some good twists and turns will you keep you guessing on who's working for whom and where on earth can you go when everyone seems to want you dead. It's a spy thriller in the basic sense and sure if you've seen one you've seen them all but the actors came ready to do their job and the script keeps you right in the thick of it. If you like these types of films then it won't be money wasted and I thought it was enjoyable enough to risk the high ticket price.

Thank the heavens for NO corny dialog or LOL moments when the actors try to "make a funny" in those ever-intense scenes which would have ruined the overall mood of the film. This movie gets gritty and dirty almost to the point where you think you're watching a street brawl. The fight choreography shows in some parts but more so in Denzel's character than in Ryan's, with the younger of the two taking the brunt of the action scenes. Not to say Denzel dosen't bring it with his skills, both as an actor and in the fight scenes. Magnificent car chases which are not burdened with an overuse of CGI, this one's all thrill with the dialog to back it up.

Our secondary characters bring the movie around as Brendan and Vera head up the typical CIA big wigs you want to slap! How many conspiracies is the government covering up? Hollywood seems to think it's more then we'd care to acknowledge but hey, it makes for great film. If my teddy bear (Brendan) is in a film and backed up with the likes of Denzel, you throw in some action and things that go "boom" and I'm sold. An exceptional job with sets and on-location shooting leave me pleased with Safe House I got everything I could have hoped for plus a little more.

This novel has also been adapted as a major miniseries by HBO - with HBO's highest ratings to date, since having premiered on April 17, 2011!

Holy comic book orgasm! I went back to the comic book store and picked up some more comics with hot guys on the cover, 'cause that’s how I roll, and I saw A Game of Thrones with a sword wielding sexy warrior surrounded by direwolves. Now, I have never read the books (have you seen the size of them?) (Kalpar: Wimp! Wiiiimp! I read all of them, check the records!) or watched the HBO show (don’t have HBO) so I thought this would be a quick and easy way see what all the fuss is about.

Issue #1 covers the first three chapters of the novel A Game of Thrones and we are introduced to three storylines. In the first one we meet a band of warriors from The Wall looking for Wilding raiders. However these warriors are attacked by a group of malevolent phantoms who slaughter their leader, who then appears to come back from the dead. Next we meet Lord Ned Stark and his sons as he executes a deserter from the Wall. On their way home they find a dead Direwolf and her five pups, which is odd because Direwolves haven’t been seen this side of The Wall in over 200 years. Since the Direwolf is the emblem of House Stark, Lord Stark lets his sons keep the pups. At their home Ned and his wife Catelyn discuss preparing for the arrival of their old friend Robert Baratheon, now king, who is coming to visit with his entourage. Last we meet Viserys Targaryen and his beautiful sister Daenerys, heirs to the throne that Robert currently holds. Viserys has sold his sister to the barbarian Khal Drogo in a plan to take back the lands that were taken from his family so long ago by the Starks and Baratheons.

I can’t remember the last time a comic book sucked me in so quickly and had me wanting the next issue so bad. It is hard to imagine the talent it took to condense three chapters of such a complex story into 32 pages. Of course having vivid and absolutely stunning artwork helped.

In my opinion, this comic book had it all. I found myself re-reading it multiple times and immersing myself in the fantasy world depicted in the detailed art. I definitely got my money’s worth from it and will continue to do so as I will flip through it many more times. All my fellow romance fans will appreciate the smexy sword-wielding men, especially Khal Drogo. You meet him at the very end and he screams romance hero (sorry to all the A Game of Throne Nerds, but he is hot!)

This was a silly fun read. Each chapter introduces us to one of the teachers or students at this unusual school. There is also a small mystery throughout the book that must be solved. Someone is trying to make sure Scary School loses because they don’t like the fact that it allows human children to attend. There are plenty of black and white drawings depicting each character. Of course, being an adult, I wasn’t sure if this would be a hit with its intended Middle Grade audience. But guess what? I have a 10 year old. So I asked her to read it and then asked her what she thought about the book.

Sharon: What do you think of the cover?

Holly: I love it, the zombie on the cover made me want to read it.

Sharon: Did you like the art work?

Holly: Yeah, it helped me see how the characters look and it was pretty wacky.

Sharon: Did you have a favorite part?

Holly: I would say Petunia’s problem was my favorite chapter.

Sharon: Would you recommend this book to your friends?

Holly: Of course! I am going to donate it to my school library.

Sharon: Was this book funny?

Holly: No, hilarious! I had to hold my mouth to keep from laughing in school while I was reading. My favorite character was Ramon the Zombie.

So there you have it, straight from a 5^th grader’s mouth. It was literally a LOL read. Holly says this book deserves 5 Sheep!

Sheep Book Review: Spirit Bound by Christine Feehan

Spirit Bound, by author Christine Feehan, is the second novel in her spinoff series Sisters of the Heart, a Sea Haven novel. Christine as a writer is solid, there are no major grammar errors and no lack of imagination. Unfortunately this latest addition IS missing some essential material including a fluid storyline and sadly lacks in-depth characterization. I really wanted to like it more!

Plot:

Lethally sexy undercover agent Stefan Prakenskii knows a thousand ways to kill a man-and twice as many ways to pleasure a woman. So he's looking forward to his new mission: arrive in the coastal town of Sea Haven and insinuate himself in the life of Judith Henderson, an ethereal beauty with ties to the crime lord he's determined to trap...

This time around our protagonist is Judith, a young and talented artist who works with paintings and kaleidoscopes. She's smart and gifted with elemental talents and the ability to emotionally influence people around her. There was a lot of build up around Judith, her past and the hurt she inadvertently caused those around her, the dark nature of her gifts and the enormous power she could possibly wield. I waited patiently 'till the end to see this magnificent manifestation of abilities only to be let down. Maybe Judith will use more of her abilities in coming novels, but this book lacked a significant payoff to its own emotional buildup. Aside from her abilities, Judith for the most part seems the vulnerable type of gal who's pretty on the eyes and whose kind nature make her the victim the majority of the time. I would have liked a little more bite from our heroine, but alas it never happens.

We have a major shift in the balance of power with Judith and her sisters, their influence stretching out of their farm and into the tiny village of Sea Haven. Tornadoes and crashing waves are assaulting the town from all sides, but miraculously none of the citizens of this town get hurt. A huge wall of flames is also running along the streets and gun shots are going off like mad, but no one seems to notice. The girls themselves have to call the local Sheriff to come down and investigate. Why does no one in this small town of folks wander outside to see what all the fuss is about? I have no clue, but this scene only adds to the overall feeling of disappointment with this story.

Enter Stefan Prakenskii, the Russian assassin sent to Sea Haven for a few reasons, one of which is to protect Judith from a psycho ex-lover who's going to escape prison. Stefan's character is all alpha-male and "I'm the boss so deal with it". I liked the guy to a point, but the Mr. Bossy-pants routine starts to get old. He's a tuff dude that knows his stuff, but the ego needs to get a nice reality check from Judith or some more character growth needed to take place here. Which unfortunately it does not. I felt like he bossed his way into her life, bossed her into loving him and then bossed her into staying with him after countless lies and deceit. No can do buck-o!

Not only is Stefan an arrogant type of guy, he's been trained to become a killing machine. So much build up is placed on Judith's ex but by the time push comes to shove the whole scenario is wrapped up without a fight. I wanted to read about Stefan beating the snot out of this guy and Judith getting in a nice rib kick! But negative points aside, I did like the steamy romance that takes place between our main two. Their dialog for the most part was intriguing, especially when bringing up past histories that have shaped both of their lives. The town of Sea Haven itself has a plethora of material that can be tapped to produce more wonderful stories. It's a stunning backdrop the author is using to paint this visual picture, I just wished the characters and story itself was worked out a little better.

Overall I'm on the fence about continuing this series. While I enjoy her other works and will actively read those, the Sea Haven saga may get washed out to sea with the coming tide.

Relying on the wisdom of an elderly vampire hunter, Sarah's rabbi father, and her own disturbing visions, Sarah must fight a millennia-old battle between unspeakable forces, where the ultimate prize may be herself.

As the modern world establishes itself and pushes the supernatural into the shadows, they supernatural fight back.

So a Rabbi, a Greek immigrant and an Egyptian God walk into a bar....Yes this was kinda the first thought I had when I saw the synopsis of this book, and I have to say I am so glad that I grabbed this one to read.

Our protagonist is a young woman named Sarah, who is not your "typical" young woman of the 1913's. Instead of worrying about who her family is arranging for her to marry, she's busy with her nose in a book trying to better educate herself.

Sarah is very independent and speaks her mind, despite what her mother thinks. I found this to be a breath of fresh air in the book, rather than being a typical "damsel in distress" Sarah is always the one thinking first about what to do in order to save her friends. No guns, no swords, no weapons, just the belief in her religion, family and friends gets Sarah through this fight.

Alex is the Greek immigrant that Sarah meets and feels an instant attraction, even though she knows her mother and father would never approver of their relationship since he is not Jewish.

Shortly after Sarah and her friends first meet Alex, things take a turn for the worse when the corpse of one of their classmates is found buried in the branches of a nearby tree. A few nights later while Sarah and her friends are out enjoying the last days of an Indian Summer they come across their former classmate, who is now a vampire. Alex explains what has happened to their classmate and they decide to kill the boy again to keep him from attacking others. Now knowing that there is a vampire "maker" somewhere in the town they discuss going after him, with some reluctant help from Sarah's father and Alex's grandfather. The story picks up great speed at this point until the end. There is a wonderful mix of Jewish, Greek and Egyptian lore and religion in this book, along with a touch of Dark magic, prophetic dreams and angels.

The way the chapters are set up is a great way to follow the plot of the story. Each one has the date, location, and sometimes the time of day. It really helps set the mood and tone of what is going on, and it doesn't leave you wondering how many days has gone by between incident A and incident B. There are a lot of small chapters (mainly 3-4 pages) so the number of chapters may seem overwhelming at first, but once you get going and get caught up in the flow of the book, you hardly notice that you have gone through so many chapters.

If you are looking for a Twilight style of vampire book, this is not it. If you want something more of the darker side, this is the book you want to grab!
