Labor Day 2025: A Celebration Of The Contribution Of Social And Economic Achievements Of American Workers

2025-09-01T09:15:00.001-04:00

Observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.

Honoring the Spirit of Work, Rights, and Progress

In today's world considering the so much talked about tariffs have a mixed effect on labor. While protectionist policies are meant to encourage domestic manufacturing, they also cause economic disruptions that can lead to layoffs and higher costs for consumers.

The tariffs disrupt global supply chains, increasing costs and uncertainty for businesses. The automotive industry is particularly vulnerable, with parts crossing international borders multiple times.

The World Bank projects that the tariffs could reduce global GDP growth and shrink international trade volumes. The Tax Foundation estimates that U.S. GDP could be reduced by up to 1.0% when accounting for retaliation.

Economists and the Federal Reserve have warned that the tariffs could contribute to higher inflation and fuel economic slowdowns.

While the United States and Canada observe Labor Day in September, the global holiday on May 1st honors the international labor movement and the contributions of workers everywhere.

India Independence Day -- Aug 15th

2025-08-15T10:11:00.002-04:00

India Celebrates Independence Day on August 15th, Commemorating Freedom from British Rule

India's Independence Day is observed annually on August 15th, a date that marks the nation's liberation from nearly 200 years of British colonial rule in 1947. This momentous occasion is a national holiday celebrated with patriotic fervor and enthusiasm across the country.

The stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947, signified the end of British sovereignty and the birth of an independent India. The transition of power was the culmination of a long and arduous freedom struggle led by numerous visionary leaders and involving countless ordinary citizens who participated in various movements, most notably those anchored in non-violent resistance and civil disobedience.

A pivotal event in the history of modern India, the country's independence was also accompanied by the painful partition of the subcontinent, leading to the creation of the Dominion of Pakistan (which later split into Pakistan and Bangladesh).

Key Historical Significance:

End of an Era: The day marks the end of the British Raj, a period of colonial domination that had a profound impact on the Indian subcontinent's social, political, and economic fabric.
Tryst with Destiny: In a famous speech delivered on the eve of independence, India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, spoke of the nation's "tryst with destiny" and the dawn of a new era of freedom and responsibility.
Symbol of Sovereignty: The hoisting of the Indian tricolor flag at the Red Fort in Delhi by Prime Minister Nehru on August 15, 1947, was a powerful symbol of India's newfound sovereignty.

Traditions and Celebrations:

The celebration of Independence Day is characterized by a blend of official ceremonies and widespread public participation.

Flag Hoisting Ceremony: The main event takes place at the historic Red Fort in New Delhi, where the Prime Minister of India hoists the national flag and delivers a televised address to the nation. This speech often reflects on the country's achievements, outlines future goals, and pays homage to the freedom fighters.
Parades and Cultural Programs: Across the country, state capitals and district headquarters hold their own flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades, and cultural events. Schools and colleges also organize special programs where students participate in patriotic songs, dances, and plays.
Kite Flying: In many parts of India, particularly in the northern regions, kite flying has become a popular tradition on Independence Day, symbolizing the spirit of freedom. The sky is often filled with colorful kites of various shapes and sizes.
Patriotic Fervor: The day is marked by a surge in patriotic sentiment, with people decorating their homes, offices, and vehicles with the national flag. Patriotic songs are played on television and radio, and special programs highlighting India's freedom struggle are broadcast.

India's Independence Day is a time for reflection, remembrance, and celebration. It is a day to honor the sacrifices of those who fought for the country's freedom and to reaffirm the commitment to the ideals of a sovereign, secular, and democratic nation.

Rakhi 2025: A Celebration Of Sibling Bonds

2025-08-09T09:26:00.003-04:00

Raksha Bandhan, popularly known as Rakhi, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated with fervor and joy, honoring the special bond between brothers and sisters. In 2025, this auspicious occasion falls on Saturday, August 9th.

The festival's name, Raksha Bandhan, translates from Sanskrit to "the bond of protection." The essence of the celebration lies in a sister's love and prayers for her brother's well-being and a brother's lifelong vow to protect her.

The centerpiece of the festival is the tying of the Rakhi. A sister ties a sacred thread, often intricately designed, around her brother's right wrist. This thread symbolizes her love, prayers, and the powerful bond they share. The act is accompanied by the chanting of a mantra, wishing for the brother's long life and happiness.

In return for this cherished gesture, the brother offers his sister a gift, which can range from money and clothes to other thoughtful presents. More importantly, he reaffirms his solemn promise to protect and support her throughout her life.

The celebration of Rakhi extends beyond the immediate family. It has evolved to embrace and honor any relationship that embodies a spirit of protective and benevolent kinship. It's not uncommon for Rakhis to be tied on the wrists of cousins, close family friends, and even soldiers, signifying a bond of mutual respect and care.

The festivities typically begin with preparations weeks in advance. Markets bustle with vibrant Rakhis, traditional Indian sweets (mithai), and gifts. On the day of Rakhi, families often gather for a special meal, exchange sweets, and create lasting memories. The air is filled with a sense of love, togetherness, and familial duty.

Historically, the festival is rooted in various legends. One of the most popular tales is that of Queen Karnavati of Chittor and the Mughal Emperor Humayun. When faced with an invasion, she sent a Rakhi to Humayun, seeking his protection. Touched by the gesture, he immediately set out to defend her kingdom. This historical account underscores the profound significance of the Rakhi as a symbol of protection that transcends religious and social boundaries.

In modern times, with families often spread across geographical distances, the festival has adapted. Many sisters now send Rakhis by post or use digital platforms to celebrate with their brothers, ensuring that the spirit of Raksha Bandhan remains strong, regardless of the miles that may separate them.

VAIKUNTA SAMADHANA

In Hindu tradition, the ceremonies performed after a person's passing are vital for the soul's peaceful transition and onward journey. The term "Vaikunta Samadhana (12th day ceremony)" points to the significant rituals conducted on the 12th day following death, which are understood to be crucial for the soul's progression towards liberation or the ancestral realm.

The 12th Day Ceremony: Sapindikarana Shraddha

The primary and most widely recognized ceremony performed on the 12th day after death is Sapindikarana Shraddha. This ritual holds immense importance:

Transition of the Soul: Until the Sapindikarana Shraddha, the departed soul is considered a preta (a disembodied spirit still attached to the earthly realm and not yet an ancestor). This ceremony facilitates the soul's transition from a preta to a pitru (an ancestor).
Entry into Pitruloka: By becoming a pitru, the soul is enabled to join the company of other deceased ancestors in Pitruloka (the realm of ancestors). Offerings are made during this ritual to the departed soul and to other ancestors to ensure this acceptance.
Alleviation of Inauspiciousness: The period of intense mourning and ritual impurity for the family is generally considered to conclude or significantly lessen after the 12th or 13th-day ceremonies, with Sapindikarana being a key rite in this process.
Rituals Involved: The procedure typically involves prayers, invocations, the offering of pindas (rice balls) which symbolize the subtle body of the deceased and also represent the ancestors. These offerings are believed to nourish and support the soul on its journey.

Historically, some traditions suggested that Sapindikarana be performed after one year. However, for practical reasons and to ensure the soul does not remain in the preta state for an extended period should something happen to the chief mourner (karta), it is now commonly performed on the 12th day.

Vaikunta Samaradhane / Vaikunta Samadhana

The term Vaikunta Samaradhane (or "Samadhana," which can imply appeasement, fulfillment, or propitiation) refers to sacred rituals performed to honor and commemorate departed souls, with the ultimate aim of their journey to Vaikunta, the celestial abode of Lord Vishnu, and the attainment of moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death).

Goal of Liberation: Vaikunta Samaradhane focuses on the soul's spiritual liberation and its union with the divine.
Broader Context: While Sapindikarana Shraddha on the 12th day is a specific ritual for ancestral status, Vaikunta Samaradhane can be a broader term or a specific observance aimed at the soul's highest spiritual destination. It is also sometimes associated with Vaikunta Ekadashi, an auspicious day (the 11th day of the waxing moon in the Hindu month of Margashira) dedicated to Lord Vishnu, observed by devotees for spiritual merit and liberation.
Connection to 12th Day: When "Vaikunta Samadhana" is referred to in the context of the 12th-day ceremony, it likely signifies that the rituals performed on this day (including Sapindikarana Shraddha) are conducted with the profound hope and prayer that the departed soul not only peacefully joins the ancestors but also ultimately attains Vaikunta. The ceremonies of the 12th day are a critical step in the soul's journey, and invoking the goal of Vaikunta emphasizes the ultimate aspiration for the departed.

Swarn's son Dr Shailendra told me that it was Inter trochanteric fracture right Femur.

It was great to have my brother and sister-in-law Ravi and Mukta Anand, my cousin brother Satish Ji in Rochester Hills for a short visit -- but without Dada this time -- I seriously missed him . Whenever Ravi and Mukta have come to see me from Toronto, most of the time Dada has also come with them, sometime along with Vijay and Veena , and some time with Satish Ji -- Miss You Dada!

We had simple lunch at Neehee's in Troy. Mukta Ji also got packed several lunch packages for me to take home with me.

Rameshwar Mathur (Dada) -- Childhood Friend To Me,Vijay, Arjun, Dilip, And So Many Is No More

December, 20 2024

Dear Rameshwar Mathur was a great friend to me, Vijay, Arjun, Dilip, and many others since our high school days in New Delhi, India in the 1950s. He was like an elder brother to us ... that is why we fondly called him Dada. I have very fond memories of knowing Dada's Dad, his brothers and sisters -- whole family, attending Dada's wedding to loving Chand Ji in India ... then when we had some great time together in Toronto in the 1960s when Dada, Vijay, and I were fortunate to stay together in Toronto for some time in the mid 1960s. I have been fortunate to have Dada's beautiful daughters Renu and Kiran spend some time with me in Rochester Hills MI. Renu and Kiran are great young ladies, have their own families now, and after Chand Ji passed away, Renu and Kiran had been taking care of Dada till his passing. Dada had been a great friend. He had a good life despite some illnesses in the past few years. May His Soul Rest In Peace!

Got a call from my friends Veena and Vijay Jain from Mississauga on Saturday Dec 7th that our friend Ramesh Mathur (Dada) is not doing well.

So I took off early Sunday morning to Dada's place. Dada's daughters Renu from Texas, and Kiran from California had come to be with Dada. Vijay, Veena, and I arrived at Dada's place around 10:30 AM. Found Dada to be week ... but in good spirits. We talked about Dada's health, reminisced about good old days, had coffee and snacks.

We talked about options for Dada's staying at the main floor level, and not have to necessarily havin to go to BedRoom upstairs. But Dada wants to stay with his routine.

Then after lunch, I went over to Kings Bridge Circle to see my sister Kanta and my nephew Sanjay. Kanta has not been well, but I found her to be in good spirits. Kanta had prepared nice lunch ... but I asked her to pack it for me -- with all the goodies, and big box of RasMalais. As I wanted to be ale to return to Rochester Hills MI before it got too dark, I took leave from Kanta Ji, and headed out.

Wishing You A Very Happy Ugadi 2024

2024-04-09T15:16:00.009-04:00

UGADI

Ugadi or Yugadi is celebrated as the first day of the year by people of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. On this day new Samvatsara, which is cycle of sixty years, starts. All sixty Samvatsara are identified by unique name.

Ugadi is celebrated as Gudi Padwa by the people of Maharashtra. Both Ugadi and Gudi Padwa are celebrated on the same day.

Ugadi is new year according to Luni-Solar calendar. Luni-Solar calendars consider the position of the Moon and the position of the Sun to divide the year into months and days. The counter-part of Luni-Solar calendar is Solar calendar which considers only position of the Sun to divide the year into months and days. Because of that Hindu new year is celebrated twice in the year with different names and at two different times of the year. The Hindu new year based on Solar calendar is known as Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Bihu in Assam, Vaisakhi in Punjab, Pana Sankranti in Orissa and Naba Barsha in West Bengal.

The day begins with ritual oil-bath followed by prayers. Oil bath and eating Neem leaves are must rituals suggested by scriptures. North Indians don't celebrate Ugadi but start nine days Chaitra Navratri Puja on the same day and also eat Neem with Mishri on the very first day of Navratri.

Holi

Holi is considered as one of the most revered and celebrated festivals of India and it is celebrated in almost every part of the country. It is also sometimes called as the “festival of love” as on this day people get to unite together forgetting all resentments and all types of bad feeling towards each other. The great Indian festival lasts for a day and a night, which starts in the evening of Purnima or the Full Moon Day in the month of Falgun. It is celebrated with the name Holika Dahan or Choti Holi on first evening of the festival and the following day is called Holi. In different parts of the country it is known with different names.

The vibrancy of colors is something that brings in a lot of positivity in our lives and Holi being the festival of colors is actually a day worth rejoicing. Holi is a famous Hindu festival that is celebrated in every part of India with utmost joy and enthusiasm. The ritual starts by lighting up the bonfire one day before the day of Holi and this process symbolizes the triumph of good over the bad. On the day of Holi 2024 people play with colors with their friends and families and in evening they show love and respect to their close ones with Abeer.
