(opps... a little late)

It was another beautiful day at Lichgate! Hannah and I had two volunteers come with us through the Outreach Program at FSU. Brianna and Michelle got the hang of gardening very quickly, and were both so helpful in turning the beds over to plant on for the winter!

First, we all weeded the bed, and raked out the pine needles. Then, Hannah and I made several trips to the compost pile with the wheelbarrow, and put it on the soil in the bed. We then took shovels and hoes, and mixed the dirt and compost together to create fertile soil to plant on. We worked together, and got the mixing part finished very fast, which was wonderful. To finish cleaning up the bed, we re-rocked the entire border, and it looked beautiful!

All of us had a great time, and were so proud of what we accomplished. We also showed our volunteers the hugelkultur bed, and explained to them how we had made it. They both were fascinated, and very interested in learning about the science behind it. The bed is looking really beautiful, and plants are already sprouting, which everyone is excited about. We are so delighted to see the garden keep getting more and more beautiful, and cannot wait to plant some winter veggies!

Wednesday and Friday were both chilly days at Lichgate, and we all came bundled up! On Wednesday, Shayna, Hannah, Burgen, and I all worked on turning over two more beds. Shayna and Burgen shoveled and dug up the soil in the beds, while Hannah and I took the wheelbarrow to get fresh compost. After we poured the compost on the beds, everyone helped to mix, and it looked great! We then re-rocked the entire border of each one, and made them look tidy and neat. All of the beds are clearly lined and visible now, and there is plenty of walking space between them.

The plants and flowers all looked so beautiful, and appear strong enough to survive through the winter months coming up. On Sunday, I watered the kale, tomatoes, okra, and put a hose in the yin/yang bed to soften the soil for the session next Wednesday. The soil was very hard and clay- like, but hopefully next week it will be pliable enough to mix up and plant on. The chive is still growing, and looking very nice as the center of the yin yang bed. We want to add some starts to the left side of it, though, to make it took even better. The garden is coming together so nicely, and I cannot wait for the session on Wednesday!

We hadn't gotten the chance to re-rock the bed that we had worked on during the session on Sunday, so that's what Burgen and our volunteers worked on first.
We then cleaned out all of the tin foil, and now it looks spick and span! After the re- rocking and cleaning of the bed was finished, we made sure that all of the plants were properly watered. Sadly, Hannah, Shayna, Burgen, and I will all be gone for Thanksgiving break next week, but the garden will still be given some love from Kristi! We are all so excited to get the garden prepped for winter break after we all return for the last week of school!
Hannah, Burgen, and I drove the van provided by the Outreach Program to Lichgate today, along with two volunteers from FSU. We all started off working on the yin yang bed. I had put a running hose in it last Sunday to soften the soil, and it helped a lot! Hannah, Steve, and I were all able to dig up the soil with a hand trowel, and plant some new collards in the bed. It looked so healthy and pretty with all of the new starts in it! Meanwhile, Burgen and Melissa helped to turn over the bed by the okra, and it is now all set and ready to go. The veggies that we harvested for our volunteers were so crisp and delicious, but their favorite was the fresh okra! Today was a very successful day, and I am looking forward to finishing up turning over all of the beds on Sunday.

We arrived at Lichgate this morning, and had two more volunteers come to help us garden! They were very eager to learn about gardening, and were super helpful. Since it's winter, we have been prepping all of the beds, and were finally able to finish the last one today! Hannah and I went to get compost from the pile in the front like usual, and wheeled it to the bed where Burgen, Shayna, and our two volunteers were.

We all used hoes and shovels, and switched off doing the jobs of getting compost with the wheel barrow, and shoveling/mixing it into the soil. Our volunteers were very intrigued with the process, because neither of them had had much gardening experience before. Hannah, Burgen, and I all explained each step of turning beds over for winter, and they were very impressed! They both worked so hard, and despite the cold, were very diligent. This took up the majority of the session, but we were also able to use watering cans on all of the other beds to keep them looking wonderful!
The weather at Lichgate was beautiful today! We had three volunteers from the Masters of Public Heath Program at FSU come out to garden with us. Leah, Quasia, and Nolan were very helpful in raking leaves, re- rocking the beds, and collecting sticks for the hugelkultur bed.

We all helped with putting leaves, branches, and other plant matter onto
the bed, so it could eventually decompose and lead to fertile soil. We
are not sure what we are going to plant on it yet, but some sweet potato
sounds like the most popular option.

Along with finishing up the bed, we also cleaned up the shed, and
organized all of the tools and storage pieces. It is currently free of
leaves, and looks so nice and tidy. We are all so excited about how much
progress we have made with the hugelkultur bed, and are so ready to
start planting for the winter!
Today was such a productive day at Lichgate! We started by covering the hugelkultur bed with soil. Kristi, Hannah, and I all worked very hard at digging and setting a border around the bed, to make it look even and uniform. We also re-rocked the beds across from it, and put more fresh compost near where the mint grows. In this same bed, there is also some beautiful kale that is sprouting, and we put compost there too!

While the sprinklers were watering the pumpkins and okra, I watered the tomato bed. It's looking so nice and healthy, and the tomatoes
that Kristi harvested were delicious! We also harvested some okra and
green beans to try... also very tasty.

We had another great Sunday afternoon at Lichgate.

Damayan
volunteers and friends worked as a team preparing a hugelkultur bed
for planting this season.

We broke down and shelved dirt onto the bed
full of logs, sticks, pine needles, leaves, and other organic materials. All key components of building healthy soil before you begin planting in a new season. Volunteers learned
how to prepare a garden before starting the most anticipated
part, planting seeds and watching them grow into
delicious vegetables.

Last weekend, Damayan Garden Project partnered up with Whole Foods for an outside garden demo. This was an exciting day and many people benefited from it. Mark, one of our garden volunteers and staff members, led this presentation with the help of three others. Mark's main focus was on how to build a raised garden bed. It was so great because Mark started with four separate planks of (unfinished) wood and actually built the bed in front of the audience. Members from the crowd participated and many questions were asked. Along with building the raised bed, Mark and the garden volunteers continued with an elaborate explanation on what to do next for a garden. Whole foods was such a great host for this event and I hope reading this blog caught your attention to know more about GARDENING! We were blessed to have the Daisy Girls come out and garden with us. The day was filled with high energy, fun activities and beautiful weather! Kristi gave a great orientation in the outdoor classroom when the girls arrived. They were so captivated by everything she was saying and were itching to get their hands dirty. The girls were so adorable during the garden tour. We were all very impressed by their knowledge of garden produce. It was the funniest thing to watch them taste basil, we tried to warn them.. that stuff is strong tasting!! Not only did they get to taste the herbs, they got to harvest their own mint and arugula as well. Their parents were excited about this activity- providing them with fresh ingredients to make tea! yum!

It is not a complete garden day without the most obvious garden task- PLANTING! Garlic was our choice of the day and the girls were blown away by the fact that when one plants a garlic bulb... more garlic grows!! The learning never ends! We ended the day coloring newspaper pots in rainbows, unicorns, castles, and of course, FLOWERS. This was so fun and really made the girls excited about gardening. Once the pots were finished and absolutely beautiful, we planted peas in them for them to take home. The Daisy Girls were such a great group to have in the garden. They got to learn and personally experience the importance of sustainability. The moment children realize the fun behind the shovel, the more the world will GO GREEN!

THANKS Daisy Girls for a awesome Saturday!! Come back soon!

ripening persimmons, and the decline of the summer harvest. The
excitement is abuzz of the harvest to come - the kale, collards,
spinach, lettuce, beets, broccoli, radishes...oh the amazing list of
things to grow can go on and on and on! In the garden we've been
clearing the beds, preparing them for fall planting, and our focus has
been on adding compost to existing beds and mulching the pathways.
Kristi has begun to sprout some seeds in the greenhouse and will
receive fall starts soon to begin our planting! Last week Kristi and I
attended the FSU Ambassador Orientation and we welcome our new
Ambassador, Javier Zamparelli! Javier is passionate about growing food,
sustainability, and farming. We welcome him to the garden! Also, in
the past couple weeks we attended a tabling event at TCC. The event had
a great turn-out and we met so many wonderful people in our community
who are interested in coming out to the garden to learn, grow and
connect. Raven, a top volunteer attended the event with me and we are
ever so grateful to have her share her time, smile & compassion. In
recent news, Lichgate held a sprouting class with New Leaf Market in
the outdoor classroom. The class was a success and we look forward to
future classes being held in our outdoor kitchen! We hope to see you

the weeds run rampant. We worked hard this week pulling weeds and
laying mulch in the walkways, keeping critters in check by inspecting
the plants, and harvesting the ripen treasures. It was wonderful to
have helping hands in the garden, getting their hands dirty, and
departing with the rewarding feeling of seeing the space transformed
with a handful of harvested veggies. Smiling kids frolicking catching

of summer is hot and buggy, yet the garden calls for love and the
volunteers heard the call. Thank you! In coming weeks, we'll continue
to mulch the pathways, pull weeds - as the herb, perennial &

We've had a lot of volunteers helping out in the gardens of Lichgate and
a few quiet weeks with Spring Break. We are preparing the gardens for
spring planting and our upcoming Earth Day event, "It's in Our Hands"
with The Magnolia School (more on that event to come). The garden is
looking quite lovely with all the new seeds, starts, and rainbow of
flowers being planted in the edible garden, perennial garden, and the
Shakespeare Garden. The perennial garden is blooming a variety of
flowers in many colors! It's exciting to see spring springing up from
the ground, buds forming, and all the butterflies flying about. I've
been working in the herb garden located directly behind the outdoor
kitchen by clearing out unnecessary weeds and planting lavender, echinacea,
lemongrass, mint, sage, and relocating a little thyme. Soon the herbal
garden will have delicious basil planted there...Yum! The tomatoes and
peppers that were planted a month ago are looking great. Beds are being
cleared and turned to add some starts of watermelon, cucumbers,
zucchini, and okra soon. Spring is a very exciting time of planting,
connecting, and enjoying the warmer weather in the garden. This weekend
on Saturday, March 31st, please join me at the Sand Festival at Market

We've had many wonderful volunteers coming out to help in the gardens
of Lichgate. On Friday, Heather, Devin, Patricio, Alexa, Davina,
Bessie, Madison, Carol, and I pulled weeds in the perennial garden for
the first hour. After clearing the weeds and taking them to the
compost, we began planting a flat of pansies and violas. This was the
first time planting for some of our volunteers, which is super exciting
to teach and watch them learn how to transplant plants into the ground!
We created a crescent moon bordering the perennial garden and added a
few pansies near the benches by the cottage. Saturday, I went to the
gardens with Dahveed, met with the Eagle Scouts, and watched the
progression of the rebuilding of the old car port. Dahveed and I went
to work pulling some weeds (there are always plenty) and called it a day
only to return the following day (we love working in the garden)! On
Sunday, we worked hard clearing the weeds near the outdoor kitchen and
relocating a huge compost pile that was in view from the outdoor kitchen
seating. We want to prepare the beds for a spring planting including a
butterfly garden from the view of the outdoor kitchen seating and more
herbs behind the outdoor kitchen work station. I planted a border of
beautiful white violas around the outdoor kitchen bed too! My 7 year
old son, Julius, joined us by helping in the garden and teaching a
couple of college students how to play chess while enjoying the grounds!
While planting, I found a garden snake coiled in the leaves. He
checked us out and slithered merrily on his way! On our workday Monday,
Kristi, Amelia, and Alexa prepped the front garden bed by weeding and
planting seeds into the ground. I cleared the front wooden fence by the
cottage of Japanese climbing fern (and some poison ivy) that was choking
some of the other plants. I added some yellow violas in honor of Laura
Jepsen. Our next volunteer day at Lichgate is on Friday, February 10th
at 1:45 pm. See you then! Phoenix, Lichgate Garden Manager 2/6/12

Lichgate - 1-28-12
What a beautiful Saturday, and a perfect day for a garden party! We had over 12 people show up to help prep our garden beds at Lichgate, including Madison and Kacki, two of our regular FSU work-study volunteers. After a brief tour of the grounds we all got busy raking off the mulch, weeding, turning the soil, and adding compost to four of the existing beds in the garden. Plus we even prepped a new area beside the strawberry patch. Thank you to the FSU Kiteboarding Association for all your hard work and to everyone who showed up to help out. Can’t wait to get some new starts and seeds into the ground!

Hope this blog finds everyone in great spirits for the holiday season. It was another productive day at Lichgate thanks to Esposito Nursery who donated more starts for us to plug in the ground. We revamped the small veggie patch by the Shakespeare garden and added Swiss chard, broccoli, and violas. Also, we created a small herb patch on the other side of the wall. We seem to have an abundance of mustards in the garden. The carrots that we planted have turned out to be mustards and just about every garden patch has mustards in it. I think a mustard faery came and sprinkled her seeds everywhere. Thanks to Raven, Bessie and Christi who are the core of Lichgate volunteers. We will miss Christi who is going back to Canada but who we hope returns to get her masters degree.
I was able to distribute some starts to the garden at the YMCA and to the Enrichment Center. But was saddened to find a tray of dead starts that I brought to the small garden at Astoria elementary school a few weeks ago. We may need to find a new liaison there.
On another note, Damayan Garden project needs a new garden manager! I have been trying to keep up with Lichgate and the other gardens but it has been challenging when I live in a different county. We need someone in Leon county who is enthusiastic about gardening and wants to take on the challenge. Please put the word out there, we need all the help we can get. I will always hold Lichgate in my heart and will continue to come volunteer with Damayan Garden Project but feel that I need a change.
PS please come support local artists this Friday Dec. 9th at the community center at MLC from 4:30-9:00. For more info call 671-2232...I will be selling my pottery! Also, check out the Alternative Christmas Fair on the 10th to help support Damayan Garden Project. More Details on our website...
How unusually warm it is! This is why we live in Florida and can garden year round. My only regret is that I did not wear a tank top and shorts.
Last Tuesday I met with the Ecology of Agriculture class from FSU and gave them the Lichgate tour, pulled up the butternut squash and talked with them long enough for one student to fall asleep. It was nice having the outdoor education center to sit in though.
On Monday we had two students from the FSU class come and volunteer in the garden and three dedicated volunteers returning for more fun too! We deweeded, stirred the compost, planted more carrots and lettuce and ate a lovely garden salad together. We even had a surprise guest come tour the garden, Nathan Valentine and his friend who I am forgetting the name of right now.
We need to start making some Okra angel ornaments and getting geared up for the Alternative Christmas Fair in December. We need volunteers to help man the booths there. Thanks for showing up everyone! Peace and Love
I was glad to see some gardening action when I arrived. Christina, Madison and Raven were hard at work getting new beds fluffed up so we could plant some carrots, red lettuce, shallots and spinach. It has been a pleasure getting to know the volunteers especially when they want to learn how to garden and have a lot to teach me too! It was a nice change to have my girls with me. My friend Anita came with her daughter and brought us a nice picnic. Some film students came and filmed some hula hoopers under the majestic oak. That was lots of fun to watch as we indulged in our picnic. Things are looking good at Lichgate. Just a reminder that there is another workday at the preschool off of Old St. Augustine this Sat.the 29th from 8ish-12ish. Thanks
It is nice to have a good group of volunteers to work with who are excited about gardening. Also, I found out Lichgate has its very own Geo cache. You have to have a cell phone with GPS to find it or a volunteer who can help. Thanks to everyone who helped volunteer on Saturday at the Boys and Girls Club and all the other times too!
With love, Mary Rault
I was greeted by two volunteers this morning, Bessie and Shannon. As we were looking around and were watering and pepper and squash harvesting another volunteer showed up, David. He helped top dress the peppers from the compost which may yield some more peppers if we ever get some rain. Raven, a hula hooper, helped harvest some sunflower and spider flower seeds for next year. It was very refreshing to have some eager volunteers who want to contribute and find Lichgate as sacred as I do. Monday mornings at Lichgate is the perfect place for that need and I look forward to help guide those who are interested.
Last Thursday I met with a group of 10 FSU students who were there for a service project. We planted a blueberry, harvested pesto and discussed some recipes, started some lettuce seeds and identified lots of poison ivy. They were another enthusiastic group who had never been to Lichgate and were super excited to come volunteer.
Despite having all these great volunteers, this next Monday is a holiday and I will not be there. I plan to make up my day on Wednesday morning instead. A huge thanks to all who care and donate their time to make Lichgate what it is. Until next time...
