World War II Memorial

Today we remember...

We recall to our hearts those who left the safety of their families and their homes to serve. We name those of our blood who did not return from wars of independence. We think of the unknown men and women who work each day on behalf of our protection. Today we are grateful.

My previous work called me to become the keeper of the beginning stages of a remarkable archive for the Navy V12 College Training Program. Clutching the hem of a worn wool jacket of a remembered Navy V-12 sailor, my heart is stunned. The stories accompanying the photos, the letters, and naval maps are gracious gifts.

As a child of the 20th century, my understanding of war is limited. I recall the few stories told of my grandmother's only brother (Norris) who fought beside my newly engaged grandfather in the Philippines. Only one returned home. The letter of condolence to my great-grandmother holds a sacred location in my great-aunts home. Norris was the only son and only brother. The yellow ribbons donning our city's trees served as a bright welcome home to our men and women of Desert Storm. At the time, I only understood the magnitude of joy expressed on the family’s faces. Their grief for the fallen seemed an iridescent cloud surrounding their thanksgiving.

The summer of 2009, my mother and I visited the World War II memorial in Washington, DC. The reality of service to one's country, dedication to one's job, and discipline of heart came into focus, as family of four paused in front of us. The grandfather with his blue cap decorated with pendants and his eyes swollen by years, nestled in a wheelchair, recounted stories to his great-grandson. Composed, my mother extended her gratitude for his service. Then she silently turned and walked away to express grief in memory of her father. The emotion felt that afternoon is not easily explained. Instead, it is an education learned. It is a churning in your soul, and you are forever changed.

Let us always remember.

Create More Business Connections by Networking Like a Pro

For any professional that is interested in advancing their career networking is an important skill. Depending on your ability to reach out and make lasting connections with many people is one of the easiest ways to advance your position and status. This doesn't happen by accident and it takes practice to put effective networking into play.

Networking should be viewed as a form of creating social connections. Looking at it only as an opportunity to further your career or make a sale is a sure fire way to destroy any relationships you do manage to build. Networking isn't only about what you get out of the connection, it's also about what you give. This is one reason why many fail at networking events and gatherings. If you look at it as a way to pick up new clients, and only view the event in that light, you are missing out on a great opportunity. Networking is about meeting new people and offering just as much as you receive. If you only try to sell other professionals will view you as a salesman and chances are they aren't buying what you are selling.

Another thing to be aware of is that you are actually networking at all times. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Look at every social interaction as a way to build your network of contacts and friends. Let this happen naturally and act professionally in everything you do. You never know when the person behind you in line at the grocery store is the CEO of a small company that would love to buy your product. Being aware of how you act and present yourself is an easy way to start to build your network of contacts.

Also, don't be afraid to add everybody to your list of contacts. It may seem odd to try to add the local cleaning lady to your professional network but that is short sighted thinking. Some day she may build her business up and become CEO of her own company. If you own some office space or need some major cleaning work done you'll be glad you have her in your network as she may offer you a discount or preferred service because you knew her before she hit it big. This is just one example and having the foresight to treat everybody in a courteous manner.

Don't come on too strong when trying to build your circle of influence. Networking is a social activity and your communication should set the other person at ease. Making a connection should be like talking to an old friend. Trying to come on strong and manufacture a relationship where one doesn't exist is a recipe for failure. Communicating and creating a new contact is more about listening to the other person and hearing what they have to say. They'll appreciate the fact that you are willing to listen to them.

After a new connection make sure you follow up in a few days. If you make a new connection you want to make sure you keep the relationship alive. Taking a business card and stuffing it into your Rolodex is as good as never making the connection in the first place. Make sure you stay in touch with the person every few months. That way if you need to call on them for something the relationship is current and they don't feel used because you only call them when you need them.

Building relationships and expanding your sphere of influence through networking is not difficult. Practice the methods above and act in a professional manner. Keep an eye out for any new connections and relationships you can build and soon you will have a network that any professional would envy.

STARTING OVER

Today, I began again. As I laced up my shoes, attached my phone to my arm, and turned on my training app, I said a silent prayer; "Brooks, you have been here before. You can do this. Get out of your own way." So, out the door I go. "Walk for five minutes to loosen your muscles." the training voice, says. "I'll tell you when it is time to start running." The verb running is a bit of a stretch in my opinion. I like to call this activity "wogging". It is the combination of walking and jogging. I have never, and I do mean never been a runner. However, it is a goal I want to reach this year.

Five minutes later, I'm jogging. Feeling good and accomplished for getting this far. I recognize a remarkable feeling in my back. It is upright, firm, strong. My arms swish from side to side, my torso swinging with confidence, and my breath...I am breathing. My lungs are working; in/out/in/out. Now, we are walking. Deeper breaths restore my movement. My mind is clear, and I am full of gratitude. The wogging is a sequence of eight. Half way thru, I am still feeling inspired. I am overwhelmed by the tenacity of my soul and the resilience of my body. Six months of inconsistent physical activity will leave a girl feeling low, a body sluggish, and a heart sad. I see the fire truck wheeling out of the fire station. Hearing their sirens and horns, I gleefully imagine they are cheering me on toward my goal. (Prayers lifted for those they are actually saving.) I appreciate when my neighbor stops me during the cool down and says, "Oh, you've been running again!" HA! I'll take it! If he thinks I am a runner, maybe I can become one. Yes, yes...THAT is what I will do.

I will learn to run. I will learn to run with all of my heart, mind, body, and soul. The trick for me is to learn to run toward something, instead of away. Have you ever felt you were running from yourself, your job, your relationships, and your life? I have. I recently ran as far away from my career in Higher Education as my diploma would allow. After 10 years in the industry, I quit. I had never quit anything (well, yearbook staff in college). I quit my job. Upon the heart-wrenching and prayerful recommendations of my remarkable mother, godmother, and god-sister, I walked into the human resources department and announced my immediate departure. The breath after such a declaration was priceless.
For the first time, I saw leaves on trees. During the last six months, I've been blessed to see the barren trees of winter blossom into full shades of green, flowers popping up and pollen flowing freely. Now, I find myself looking for the next book of my life to write. Healing has taken place over the last chapter. The End nicely stamped.

Today, the gunshot of a new race began. No particular personal best time to beat, accomplishment medallion, or sticker to be placed in perpetuity. My goals include: Life to be lived, and Joy, peace, and contentment to be found. Oh, and RUNNING...Yes, I will learn to RUN TOWARD LIFE. Will you join me?

IS YOUR MOTHER HOME?

Working on the back deck, I am accompanied by the squawking of the Canadian geese. They have migrated into the back yard for their afternoon ritual of what I'm sure would be high tea in other parts of the animal kingdom. They are loud, but that is okay. We humans are much worse; of that I am certain. There is a knock at the front door, yet no one answers. I am expecting the lady of the house to answer the door, yet the only greetings are that of the loud barking dogs. So, I meander around to the front to see the nice yard fella walking away. "Hello", I say. "Yes." he turns and asks, "Is your mother home?" Our conversation is brief. His team begins to work, and I am respectfully shooed off of the back deck to allow their hedge trimming success.

I continued to ponder his question. "Is your mother home?" As a young child, I was taught to never answer that question in the negative. A stranger could be trying to trick me into allowing him/her into my home. Of course, that is to assume that I never talked to strangers. Which of course I did. It was a lesson, I did not learn very well. To this day I will talk to anyone/anything. If it talks back I am overjoyed. I digress...

Canadian adventure with her...

"Is your mother home?" Well, no, biologically speaking, she was not home. I was sure she was working in her salon. However, yes, she was home. I'm not aware of what kept her from opening the door, but I expect the reason was warranted. The lady of the house, my aunt, was home. In one small question, I was honored by the nice yard fella's belief that she was my mother. For all practical reasons, yet not so technical, she is a mother to me. She is the woman who has shown me the world, taught me the value of a sale, opened my eyes to boundaries, awakened my mind to female progress, and has been a steward of my spirit in Christ. From day one, she told the doctor I was the ugliest baby she had ever seen. This happening on the heels of the preacher, unbeknownst to her, saying that I looked JUST LIKE HER! HA! I think she has tried to make up for that moment, my entire life. She has supplied me with wardrobe after wardrobe, food from her pantry, and nuggets of wisdom; too many to share. In fact, any time a friend has a concern, it is her teachings I most often quote. She is a rock, a safe place, and she is a mother.

Perhaps, you can identify with my situation. You too have been blessed with a relationship without a nine month gestation period; she has provided you the matriculation of a lifetime. She has shielded you, comforted you, straightened you out, called you by name, and above all, she has loved you. She has shared her love without measure.

As May brings about the flowers of April's showers, it is no surprise that we also celebrate the gifts of Mothers. May you make the space and time to show your mother (no matter the definition) that she will forever be "home" in your heart, your mind, your soul, and your love. Blessings!

Willie Nelson Concert!

As we mature and begin to take on more responsibility, we search for ways to run our lives, organize our homes, raise our kids (puppies and plants, for some of us), juggle work, and give quality time in relationships. I have often found the wisdom of "plan your work and work your plan" to be helpful. With a background in event planning, I love a plan, a guide, a schematic of space, and the organization of every tiny detail precisely penned. The execution or the "work your plan" part is where the unconscious adrenaline of procrastination can set into my body. I know I will get a kick of energy at the very last minute and go into a tailspin of unhealthy multi-tasking. There is a list; a long list. I LOVE a list. Heck, I even write things on the list that "are complete" just to mark them off as a triumph of success. Please tell me I am not alone!

Recently, my mother and I met to go to the grocery. Going to town is a planned activity because "town" is not around the corner. It's a haul, and we must prepare. As we met over coffee to fuel our shopping day and divide our lists, Mom mentioned her deep freezer. It had not been inventoried in a while, and she did not want to duplicate purchases. To the back porch we go. Yes, that is where one keeps the deep freeze and the extra fridge (we will get to the extra freezer in the shed, in a bit). In less than 10 minutes, the plan to take a trip to town was out like frozen food bitten by Jack Frost. We were committed, to a NEW plan: Let's empty the deep freezer, defrost it, sort every type of meat and vegetable, and wrap (yes; wrap and label) all of the meat. Then we can sort the veggies into the standing freezer in the shed, and stock the back porch fridge freezer with ready to eat meals! Did you see it?... The birth of a brand new plan. The original one put aside for another day!

I must tell you, it was a very FUN day. In fact, it made going to town much easier. We even joked about our exact inventory as we walked around Spain's. In essence, our work your plan into another plan worked beautifully! Flexibility can be a beautiful gift. The next time you want to fuss at yourself for getting off track, remember that sometimes you have to take an account of where you are, what you have, and exactly what you need before moving full speed ahead with YOUR plan.

Silently, I believe my mom was teaching me that lessons. Cheers to her brilliance: teaching me about why the side of the freezer freezes, how to tell the difference between round steak and chuck steak, finding a partner to share in this monumental task, and sharing her amazing laugh throughout the entire day!

Meet Max... He is my five year old Yorkie friend, my best bud, my main squeeze, my little man. Each morning, he wakes with more energy than the energizer bunny. His morning routine includes stretching, treats, running, and of most importance finding his toy. Toy begins its journey as a small natural rope. Toy ends its life as an over-loved and chewed wad of what resembles rope.

Our bed covers piled high from evening's slumber, coffee in hand and a nice game of fetch already under way...I noticed Max digging in the covers. He is twisting, turning, and manipulating the covers, in his normal way of making his perfect resting spot. However as Max snuggled next to me, I notice Toy is barely peaking under the mound of prepared blanket. As is custom for dogs to hide their most prized possessions, Toy was indeed hidden.

The calculated treasure made me consider: For years, I hid under my own version of blankets. Growing up with acne, I was ashamed of my skin, my face, and my looks. Thanks to the modern marvels of concealer, I felt safe to show my face in public. Before Mother Nature decided to regress to winter, my mother and I decided it would be a great idea to landscape the front of her Salon. I have grown up with my own version of Steele Magnolias minus the 'bashful and blush" color scheme. Her customers are delightful, informative, and quite helpful when it comes to landscaping suggestions. Looking back, I wish I had taken their advice to start small. Instead, we dove into a huge project.

Our bodies have ached, our fingers blistered, and our hearts filled with laughter as we attempted to become human tillers. Manipulating the ground has been an adventure in snail relocation, earthworm mutilation (sorry), and fire ant hill destruction. Please do not think me a violent person. We intended no harm for the sake of esthetics.

Three-fourths finished with our back-breaking tilling routine, the idea of fixing our mechanical tiller came to our supervisors mind (aka my father). One of our handiest family members was in earshot of the suggestion. She became intrigued by the challenge and barreled off to retrieve the tiller from its resting place.
