Peace-minded Israeli reaches out to everyday Iranians via Facebook

2012-03-20T04:35:00.000-07:00

It is not possible to switch an Iranian variety from an Israeli phone. It will basically not go through. That no interaction arises from the govt stage, where there is no discussion between the two nations aside from community presentations used to bring large risks of war to each go camping.

That is why it was so challenging for Ronny Edry, an Israeli artist centered in Tel Aviv, to get his concept across to the individuals of Iran.

"My concept was easy, I was trying to arrive at the other part. There are all these shares about war, Iran is originating to blast us and we blast it, we are seated and holding out. I desired to say the easy terms that this war is insane," said Edry.

Using his graphics abilities and his partner's help (she is also a visual designer), he applied memes over images of himself, his spouse, his buddies and his others who live nearby. He then published them on the Myspace web page of Pushpin Mehina, his little style university, with a definite message:

IRANIANS

we will never bomb your country

We *Heart* You.

The reaction, said Edry, was frustrating. "In a few time, I had a large number of stocks and a large number of prefers and it was like something was developing.

"I think it's really awesome that someone from Iran poked me and said 'Hello, I'm from Iran, I saw your "poster" on Myspace,' " Edry said. "I believed it was insane because I never talked to an Iranian in my lifestyle. I awoke my wife: 'There is someone on Myspace from Iran!' "

He published his styles for anyone to take and plaster over their own images. The images and content have been surging the site.

Edry says he began the promotion to get previous the severe terms and discuss immediately to Iranians to see whether there really was anything to deal with about.

Iran's atomic progression system is producing security in Israel and its European members. Experts in the European say Iran is trying to create a atomic tool while Iranian authorities require their atomic system is for relaxing power creation only.Edry has obtained a large number of information from individuals in Iran submitting a declaration to Israel, he say.

He distributed one personal concept from Iran, without disclosing the identification of the sender: "We really like you too. Your term gets to out there, despite the censorship. And Iranian individuals, aside from the program, have no challenging thoughts or bitterness towards anybody, particularly Israelis."One publish on the Pushpin Myspace web page says: "We reveal a typical historical previous, have been giving both our excellent and historical societies, dialects and poems together. ... We are so identical, and political figures cannot cut a tie that has been linked millenia ago. I am extremely pleased to have you as my buddies."

Not all the reactions to the promotion were good, however.

One meme says "Iranians We *Heart* You SO MUCH we are arriving over."

The first meme was published Thursday, and Edry says he desires the discussion will not end merely with Iranians and Israelis. He mentioned the stress includes more than these two nations and he would like to involve members and nearby nations in the discussion. "The concept is to put the concept out there that we don't want this war."

"At the end of it, I will be the one doing this war. Bibi is not going to take the gun," he said, mentioning Israeli Primary Reverend Benyamin Netanhayu, "I will have to. Before I go into another war, maybe I examine this one a bit better."

When requested whether this design of promotion could perform with Israelis and Palestinians, Edry said that it was probably already previous that factor, but now Israel has the opportunity to utilize an opportunity to begin clean with another local next door neighbor.

"We are [right next to] Palestinians, so interaction was not a issue. This scenario is different because [Israel is] now just beginning to discuss to Iran," he said. "And maybe just by discussing we can end it."

In an Israel Community Viewpoint study by Shibley Telhami and the Dahaf Institution performed Feb 22-26 among a nationwide associate example of 500 Israelis (margin of mistake is +/- 4.3%), only 19% of Israelis indicated assistance for a pre-emptive strike on Iranian atomic features without U.S. assistance. And while 45% believe an Israeli reach would damage the Iranian govt, 44% believe it would actually enhance it.

The U. s. Declares has encouraged for a nonmilitary remedy, such as difficult supports and diplomatic discussions.

The increasing stress between the two nations have already affected other nations as well: Israel held responsible Iran for a Valentine Day bombing in Thailand and for a bombing the next day in Indian that focused Israeli diplomats.

Free mobile apps 'drain battery faster'

2012-03-20T01:48:00.000-07:00

Free mobile apps which use third-party services to display advertising consume considerably more battery life, a new study suggests.

Findings suggested that in one case 75% of an app's energy consumption was spent on powering advertisements.
Report author Abhinav Pathak said app makers must take energy optimisation more seriously.
Free applications typically have built-in advertisements so developers can make money without having to charge for the initial app download.

Mr Pathak told the BBC that developers should perhaps think twice when utilising third-party advertising and analytics services in their app.
The research, produced by at team at Purdue University in Indiana, USA, looked at popular apps such as Angry Birds and Facebook.
Due to restrictions built into Apple's mobile operating system, the team was unable to run tests on the iPhone.
In the case of Angry Birds, research suggested that only 20% of the total energy consumption was used to actually play the game itself.
Of the rest, 45% is used finding out your location with which it can serve targeted advertising.
'3G tail'
The tests were carried out by running the app over a 3G connection. The results noted that many apps leave connections open for up to 10 seconds after downloading information.
In Angry Birds, that brief period - described by researchers as a "3G tail" - accounted for over a quarter of the app's total energy consumption.
Chris McClelland, director of Belfast-based app developer Ecliptic Labs, said he was not surprised by the findings.
"Advertising needs to connect to the server and send information about location," he explained to the BBC.
"That just takes up so much battery. It seeps up the energy."
He said such practices were largely unavoidable if users wanted to enjoy free, ad-supported games and applications.
However, he said developers should give more consideration to energy consumption when building in new features.

Four shot dead at Jewish school in France; gun used in earlier attacks

2012-03-19T23:47:00.000-07:00

The gunman who fatally shot three children a young rabbi at a Jewish school in Toulouse, France on Monday remains at large after fleeing the scene on a moped through the city's backstreets. The killer has been described by French media as the "most wanted man in France," since President Nicolas Sarkozy said the bullets from a .45-caliber pistol he used matched one that was used in two previous fatal attacks in the last two weeks. This act is horrific and cannot remain unpunished," Sarkozy said in a televised address, adding that the terrorism alert level in France had been raised to its highest level ever. Sarkozy flew to Toulouse. The killer was described as a short, overweight man who behaved calmly and appeared to handle his weapons with ease. He wears a helmet and rides the same stolen scooter. His victims have been ethnic minorities -- Jewish, North African or Jewish -- witnesses have said that in one of the attacks, the killer pushed aside a bystander to get to his victims, the BBC reported.

According to Le Figaro, a French newspaper, Sgt. Imad Ibn-Ziaten had posted a classified advertisement selling a motorcycle, and the suspect made plans to see it on Sunday, March 11. Ibn-Ziaten waited behind a school in a quiet area of Toulouse, essentially waiting for his killer to show up.
Because of these details, some fear the suspect may be a serial killer driven by racism.
Everything leads one to believe that these were racist and anti-Semitic acts," Toulouse Mayor Pierre Cohen said on BFM-TV.
The gunman arrived at the Ozar-Hatorah middle and high school around 8:15 a.m. Monday morning and shot at people waiting on the curb for a shuttle, LaDepeche, the Toulouse newspaper reported. He killed 30-year old Hebrew teacher Jonathan Sandler, his two children, Arye, 6, and Gabriel, 3; and Miriam Monsonego, 8, the daughter of the school principal, Toulouse prosecutor Michel Valet said.
The gunman chased 8-year-old Miriam into the concrete courtyard, stopping her by her hair, The New York Times reported. That's when his gun jammed. Still holding her, he switched weapons and shot her in the head.
A 17-year-old was seriously wounded.
The assailant used a heavy-caliber firearm and another weapon. At least 15 shots were fired.
Nicole Yardeni, a local Jewish official who saw security video of the attack from the single camera near the school gate, described the shooter as "determined, athletic and well-toned." She said he wore a helmet with the visor down.
"You see a man park his motorcycle, start to shoot, enter the school grounds and chase children to catch one and shoot a bullet into her head," Yardeni said. "It's unbearable to watch and you can't watch anymore after that. He was looking to kill."
Parents who witnessed the incident -- which happened shortly before 8 a.m. local time (3 a.m. ET), as children were being dropped off at the school -- described the scene.
"I saw two people dead in front of the school, an adult and a child ... Inside, it was a vision of horror, the bodies of two small children," a distraught father told RTL radio, Reuters reported.
"I did not find my son, apparently he fled when he saw what happened. How can they attack something as sacred as a school, attack children only sixty centimeters [about two feet] tall?'' he added.
"It was terrible ... It felt like it lasted a long time," Charles Ben Semoun, a parent of a child at the school, told i-tele television, the Bloomberg news service said.
It was the worst anti-Semitic incident in France since August 1982, when six people were killed in a grenade attack and subsequent shooting at the Goldenberg restaurant in a Jewish neighborhood on Rue des Rosiers in central Paris. France's 600,000-strong Jewish community is Europe's largest.
The bodies were brought in hearses to the school Monday night for an evening vigil. All of the dead had joint Israeli-French citizenship and will be buried in Israel, the Israel Foreign Ministry said.

Monday's shootings come days after three soldiers were killed in two separate shootings in the same area by a man who also escaped from the scene by motorbike. On March 10, a gunman shot and killed a paratrooper in Toulouse. Last Thursday, a masked gunman on a motorbike opened fire on three uniformed paratroopers at an ATM machine in Montauban, about 30 miles from Toulouse, killing two and critically wounding the other.

Criminal information show problems with the law, such as an police detain for attack. But stunned others who live nearby in Pond Tapps, Clean., where he resided with his spouse Karilyn, said they realized Bales as a friendly family man.

Bales is accused of leaving his outpost in southern Afghanistan base in the early morning hours Sunday and killing nine children and seven other civilians, then burning some bodies. He was taken into custody after walking back to the combat outpost.

In contrast, Bales is described in a 2009 Army report from Fort Lewis as being sensitive to local Iraqis after his unit helped rescue a downed Apache helicopter in Najaf in January 2007.

"We discriminated between the bad guys and the combatants, and then afterward we ended up helping the people that three or four hours before were trying to kill us,'' Bales is quoted as saying in February 2009. "I think that's the real difference between being an American as opposed to being a bad guy, someone who puts his family in harm's way like that."

The Army said Bales was being held in "special housing" in his own cell rather than the standard four-person room. The prison houses pre-trial and convic.,ted soldiers sentenced up to five years confinement and has a 464-person capacity.

Bales has not yet been charged.

A summary of Bales' military record released by the Pentagon said he attained the rank of staff sergeant in 2008 and has been in the Army since Nov. 8, 2001.

He is a member of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

Bales is a sniper who had completed the military's sniper training course as well as other training programs. He was on his first tour of duty in Afghanistan and arrived in the country last December. He had served three war-zone tours in Iraq of 12, 15 and 10 months' duration.

According to public records, Bales was charged with criminal assault in in Tacoma, Wash., in August 2002. The Associated Press reported he was arrested for assault on a girlfriend, not the woman he later married.

Bales pleaded not guilty, and the case was dismissed after he underwent 20 hours of anger management counseling. A separate hit-and-run charge was dismissed in a nearby town's municipal court three years ago, according to records.

Bales and his wife, Karilyn, who works for a bank, have two children, ages 3 and 4.

Neighbors described Bales as good-natured and warm, and said they had seen him playing with his children outside their split-level home about 35 miles south of Seattle.

"I just can't believe Bob's the guy who did this," said Paul Wohlberg, a next-door neighbor who said his family was friends with the Bales. "A good guy got put in the wrong place at the wrong time … I never thought something like this would happen to him."

Kassie Holland, who lives next door, said she would often see Bales playing with his two kids and the family together at the modern split-level home.

"I'm shocked," she said. "I can't believe it was him. There were no signs. It's really sad. I don't want to believe that he did it.

"He always had a good attitude about being in the service,'' she added. "He was never really angry about it. When I heard him talk, he said, it seemed like, yeah, that's my job. That's what I do. He never expressed a lot of emotion toward it."

Bales will be represented by military lawyers and Seattle criminal defense attorney John Henry Browne, who once defended serial killer Ted Bundy, who was executed in Florida in 1989.

Browne said Bales was injured twice while deployed to Iraq, suffering a concussion in a vehicle accident caused by an improvised explosive device, and a battle-related injury requiring surgery that removed part of one foot. The service record released by the Army did not mention battle injuries or a Purple Heart award for combat injury.

Browne said when the 11-year veteran heard he was being sent to Afghanistan late last year, he did not want to go.

"He wasn't thrilled about going on another deployment," Browne said. "He was told he wasn't going back, and then he was told he was going."

Afghan shootings: US soldier suspect flown to Kuwait

2012-03-15T03:07:00.000-07:00

The US soldier accused of killing 16 civilians, including women and children, in Afghanistan on Sunday has been flown to Kuwait, US officials say.

They say legal proceedings will now be conducted in another country.
Afghan MPs have demanded that the man be tried in Afghanistan. Correspondents say that scenario is very unlikely.

Meanwhile an Afghan man who crashed a lorry at an airfield as the US defence secretary's plane was arriving has died of his injuries, officials say.
Lt Gen Curtis Scaparrotti said the man apparently had tried to ram the stolen vehicle into a group of US Marines at the Camp Bastion in Helmand. Defence chief Leon Panetta was not at risk at any time, US officials said.
Mr Panetta was in Helmand to address US troops, as fears mount that they could be the target of a backlash against foreign forces.
He is also due to meet Afghan President Hamid Karzai in an effort to rebuild relations rocked by incidents such as the massacre in Kandahar and the burnings of Korans at a US military base last month.
Shot in their homes'
The attack in Kandahar province has caused outrage across Afghanistan. On Thursday about 2,000 people demonstrated in the southern Afghan province of Zabul, the second major protest outside Kandahar this week.

The victims were shot in their homes in the remote Panjwai district of Kandahar, which is also the spiritual homeland of the Taliban.

The staff sergeant, who has not been named or charged, allegedly left his base in southern Afghanistan before dawn on Sunday, entered several houses in the area and shot men, women and children at close range.
The soldier was held by the US military in Kandahar until Wednesday evening, when he was flown out of the country "based on legal recommendation", Pentagon spokesman Capt John Kirby said.
"We do not have appropriate detention facilities in Afghanistan," Capt Kirby said.
A Nato official later confirmed to the BBC that the suspect had been flown to Kuwait.
Members of the Afghan parliament had demanded that he should be put on trial in their country.
But the BBC's Paul Adams in Washington says this was never going to happen. The US has always insisted that charges of wrongdoing by its soldiers be dealt with within the American military legal system.
US officials say the soldier handed himself in. Mr Panetta has said that if found guilty, he could face the death penalty.
Officials said the soldier had completed several tours in Iraq but was on his first tour of duty in Afghanistan.
Nato and the US administration have insisted that there will be no change of strategy in Afghanistan. The issue has been at the top of the agenda as the UK's Prime Minister David Cameron makes a state visit to Washington.
Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) plans to withdraw all of its combat forces by the end of 2014. American troops are also following that timetable.

Google implements privacy policy despite EU warning

2012-03-01T02:35:00.000-08:00

Internet company Google has gone ahead with its new privacy policy despite warnings from the EU that it might violate European law.

The change means private data collected by one Google service can be shared with its other platforms including YouTube, Gmail and Blogger.
Google said the new set-up would enable it to tailor search results better.
But data regulators in France have cast doubt on the legality of the move and launched a Europe-wide investigation.
Google has merged 60 guidelines for its individual sites into a single policy for all of its services.
France's privacy watchdog CNIL wrote to Google earlier this week, urging a "pause" in rolling out the revised policy.

"The CNIL and EU data authorities are deeply concerned about the combination of personal data across services," the regulator wrote.
"They have strong doubts about the lawfulness and fairness of such processing, and its compliance with European data protection legislation."
The regulator said it would send Google questions on the changes by mid-March.
Strong as ever'
In response, Google's global privacy counsel Peter Fleischer said he was happy to answer any concerns CNIL had.
"As we've said several times over the past week, while our privacy policies will change on 1st March, our commitment to our privacy principles is as strong as ever," Mr Fleischer wrote in a blog post.

Strong as ever'

The company rejected the regulator's request to hold off on making the changes. Users are being moved on to the new single policy shortly after midnight on 1 March, local time.

Google's business model - the selling of ads targeted on individual user behaviour - relies on collecting browsing information from its visitors.
Until today, this information was kept apart between services.
This meant a search on, for example, YouTube, would have no significance on what results or advertising you would encounter on another Google site like Gmail.
The new agreement, which users cannot opt out of unless they stop using Google's services, will mean activity on all of the company's sites will be linked.
Many websites and blogs in the technology community have given guidance for users concerned about how their browsing history will be used.
They suggest users can access, and delete, their browsing and search history on the site by logging in to google.com/history.
A similar page for YouTube viewing and search history can also be accessed.
Users can see which Google services hold data about them by viewing their dashboard.
'Advertiser interests' In preparation for the policy change, Google displayed prominent messages notifying visitors about the plans. A dedicated section was set up to provide more details.

Google argued that combining the policies would make it simpler for users

However, campaign group Big Brother Watch has argued that not enough has been done to ensure people are fully aware of the alterations.
A poll of more than 2,000 people conducted by the group in conjunction with YouGov suggested 47% of Google users in the UK were not aware policy changes were taking place.
Only 12% of British Google users, Big Brother Watch said, had read the new agreement.
The group's director Nick Pickles said: "If people don't understand what is happening to their personal information, how can they make an informed choice about using a service?
"Google is putting advertisers' interests before user privacy and should not be rushing ahead before the public understand what the changes will mean."

A major conference is being held in Tunisia to seek a breakthrough in the increasingly bitter Syrian unrest.

2012-02-24T01:27:00.000-08:00

He US, Europe and Arab countries plan to challenge President Bashar al-Assad to provide humanitarian access within days to the worst-affected areas.
But Russia and China, key allies of Syria which have blocked UN resolutions again Damascus, are not attending the "Friends of Syria" conference.
Activists say more than 90 people died across Syria on Thursday.
The conference will agree a declaration on Syria, expected to demand an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian assessment, with the threat of further sanctions if ignored.
The declaration may also boost the standing of the main opposition umbrella group the Syrian National Council, by naming it as a "legitimate" representative of Syrians, but stopping short of giving it full endorsement.
The BBC's Jim Muir in Beirut says the conference is unlikely to persuade Damascus to change its stance towards the uprising but will increase the pressure on it.
Russia and China - considered crucial allies of Damascus - are not taking part.
Both countries have faced Western and Arab criticism for blocking a UN Security Council resolution that would have backed an Arab League peace plan for Syria.
They have said they want to see an end to the violence but oppose any international action which amounts to forced regime change.BBC News

Some Apple fans no longer on speaking terms with Siri

2012-02-22T04:25:00.000-08:00

Siri is easily the most acknowledged operate of the 4S, Apple's best-selling iPhone ever. And there's speculation it might be a operate in the next version of the The apple company company iPad, expected to be unveiled in beginning Objective.

So four many months after Siri's launch, we preferred to see how clients are getting to the talking about affiliate. Is it a must-have addition they couldn't stay without, or a unique that seemed fun at first, but now is hardly used?

We obtained out to an unscientific selecting of USA TODAY guests to find out, and the verdict is 50-50. Some individuals really like it, whileothers say they will on talking about circumstances with Siri.

Ken Burke of Calgary, Clear., says he examined in with Siri at the beginning because it was fun, but he exhausted with it easily. "I can believe in one area how many times I have used it in the last three many months."

Norm Glismann of Dayton, Oh, says he would rather type in information himself. "Siri usually misunderstands what I've expected, so the response isn't near to what I'm in search of. Once, it took me five tries to get a appropriate response."

But John Sherk of Redondo Seashore, Calif., likes Siri and uses it to keep pressing affiliates while behind the rim. "I use it every day," he says. "To talk about and produce and not be dangerous needs an affiliate, and that's who Ms. Siri is. I tell her what to do, and she does it. It's maybe the best element on the iPhone."

Apple, which lowered to ideas on this story, has not released particular research for income of the iPhone 4S. But some 187 million iPhones of all wrinkles have been promoted since the lights 2007 launch. And in the 1 / 4 that completed last Dec, The apple company company promoted a record 37 million iPhones. Verizon wifi wireless Wireless and Splash now provide the mobile phone gadgets in the U.S. moreover to AT&T, which was once the exclusive U.S. company.

Siri designed its way to the iPhone after The apple company company ordered the company (also known as Siri) in beginning 2010. Before that, Siri was a free-standing app for the iPhone.

When The apple company company introduced Siri, it designed a element of saying the operate was in "beta," and says on its website, "We'll keep enhance it gradually."

for recommendations, Web inquiries and developing his routine.

Dan Gillespie, of Glen Allen, Va., is a type two diabetic issues individual and says Siri is a day-to-day prompter. "The quick I get home from the healthcare doctor, it informs me to take my alternatives and analyze my program. In the last, I'd always forgotten." Austin Goff of London, uk Country, Mo., uses Siri only sometimes, due to issues. "I find out it aggravating that when I ask a concern most of your energy and effort she says, 'OK, how about a Web look for for … ?' Many times she feedback, 'I'm really sorry about this, but I can't take any needs right now.' "

One big obstacle for Siri seems to be components. It has concern with deep-accented individuals.

"A lot of times it doesn't know what I'm trying to say," says Matthew Yamamata of Los Angeles.

Evan Neves, who lifestyle in New You are able to but comes from Southern region usa, understands it "annoying" when he requirements Siri to deal with a cherished one, "and it says I found five restaurants near to you."

Ginny Geer of Memphis says she has to do it again her ask for to Siri too many times and comes to an end up "just coming into in a get in touch with wide range or looking something up for myself. I had a attractive child, I don't need a attractive cellular cellphone."

When Siri released, many clients had fun asking the cellular cellphone ridiculous issues, which designers encouraged by healing ridiculous alternatives into the databases, such as recommendations on what to do with a dead body and outcomes ("Oh, stop") to marriage recommendations.

Gartner professional Erina Gartenberg says the absurdity was a "novelty" that got individuals talking about and into stores. And it performed, he says. "It's one of their very big differentiators for the iPhone 4S from everything else and is a tremendous hit. Just look at the income for the iPhone 4S."

Competing mobile phone gadgets according to The search engines Dealing with program and Windows Windows Phone methods have terminology recognition as well, "but they're not nearly as refined as Siri is," he says.

Siri may be ground-breaking and the most comprehensive use yet of terminology look for, but for client Eric Casperson of Austin, tx, tx, it still has a long guidelines on how to go.

While he uses Siri sometimes for recommendations, more often than not, it's just "a fun toy," he says. "Good to settle a bar bet, asking her to do the research for you."http://www.apple.com/

Apple Wanders Into Mountain Lion Territory

2012-02-21T01:50:00.000-08:00

Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) let OS X Lion out of its cage just last July, but the company's already started talking up the next version of its operating system, which it'll call "Mountain Lion."

The details and developer preview that Apple has come out with indicate that even more iOS DNA is being mixed into OS X this time around, with more shared features and functions.
One of the most welcome new features for iOS 5 last year was the Notification Center, and a very similar type of notification tool will show up in Mountain Lion. iCloud will have deeper hooks in the OS, allowing users to upload documents. The mobile Notes app will make an appearance on the desktop, and full-screen mirroring will come to Airplay -- though only in 720p with stereo sound.
iChat will become a thing of the past. In its place you'll find Messages, which will support chats with the usual gang of IM platforms as well as iMessage, the chat system used by iOS.
And one new feature called "Gatekeeper" could make OS X even more iOS-ish in a different way -- not with common features, but with a common security philosophy.
iOS operates in what's known as a "walled garden." Unless you go through the process of jailbreaking your iPhone, the only software you can get is stuff that Apple's specifically OKed and placed in the App Store.
With Gatekeeper, your Mac can live inside a walled garden too -- though you do have the choice of whether you want to stay there, no jailbreaking required in order to leave. You can opt to accept only software from the Mac App Store, meaning you never have to worry about weird programs you don't want somehow latching onto the system. Or you can opt to take stuff only from the App Store and in-the-wild developers that Apple has identified as safe. Or opt to accept installations from anywhere if you figure you can take care of yourself. So it's sort of like supermax versus halfway house versus your own home.
This gives users a choice regarding the old liberty vs. security conundrum, but it could foreshadow a much more restricted future for the platform. When the Mac App Store first arrived, there were already suspicions that the company's ultimate goal was to eventually make its store the only way for Macs to get software. Gatekeeper still leaves a choice, but it could also prove to be another way Apple slowly eases its users into an even more closed-off system.
