Surmise - To Guess

Surmise is a painter in the fairy world. Surmise paints sun rises that he has seen in his life. Surmise though is no longer alive because he died about 50 years ago. He only made about 30 paintings. So his paintings are very expensive. Some fairies have spent half their life savings to get just one painting. Most of Surmise paintings belong to his children who will not sell them. Some of his children make wills so if they die the painting will go to their children. Many fairies believe that there are a lot more of his paintings somewhere.

Many fairies have gone looking for his paintings but none have found any of them. Some even go mad looking for them. Some fairies have gone looking for the paintings and never come back. Only one fairy has ever come back with a painting and it was only half of it. That fairy went back looking for the other half but he was never seen again. The half of the painting he found later was looked at by a family member and he said that Surmise only painted half of this one because he wanted to see what it would look like.

Only one fairy has more than 4 painting of his own. He is Surmise brother. Surmise left the 6 paintings to him in his will. He originally left 10 but his brother sold 4 of them to pay for a few bills he couldn’t afford. He sold the 4 paintings for over one million fairy dollars. Now he is the 2nd richest fairy in the world. The richest is the fairy king.

Most of Surmise family sold all of their paintings because they didn’t want them. His kids though didn’t sell any of them. Actually they buy any of the paintings that are for sale and they put it in the museum that they made. They made the museum for an extra few dollars a month but they decided to make it their main source of money. People come and pay to

Aback - by Surprise

Aback

Aback is a small deer that lives in fairy land. An aback can jump really high. An aback is different from every other animal in the fairy land in the way that they have now animal that tries to eat them. They live for about 70 years and only when they get sick do they ever live shorter than that. The aback have a disease that only they can get. The disease makes them very weak. It makes them so weak that they can’t search for food or water so they die. The disease though is very rare and sometimes doesn’t weaken them that much so sometimes they live. The aback also has plenty of food and water so they never have to worry about running out of either of them.

A long time ago the aback ran out of the only thing they ate. The aback had to find something else to eat other than what they had been eating. So the leader of the aback came to the fairy elders to have them help think of something to eat. The fairies and the aback thought for two days coming up with ideas but all their choices made the fairies sick. They thought for a few more days but had the same outcome. Finally they thought of the grass that grew near the fairies. The aback tried it and they loved it. From there on out the aback only ate the grass near the fairies.

Mentor - A Trusted Guide

A mentor is a monster. The mentors like to eat fairies. The mentor used to come up o fairies while they were asleep and they would eat them. Because of this fairies used to sleep in holes. They did this for a while until the mentor figured out that they were sleeping under ground. After that fairies would have a lookout every night. The only bad thing was then during the day the lookout would get tired and fall asleep. While asleep the mentor would sneak up on the fairy and eat him.

The fairies decided to have a meeting. They decided that they would have a few fairies look out during the day while the lookout during the night could sleep. The first time they did this a mentor came to eat the fairy. The other fairies woke up the fairy sleeping. Once the fairy woke up they flew away before the mentor could catch them. The fairies decided they would do this every day. The mentors would come every night but they could never catch any fairies. Because of this the mentor stopped coming and the fairies stopped looking out for the mentor at night.

Deluge - Overflow of Water from Rainfall

Deluge is a place where teenage fairies go to hang out. Deluge is a place where fairies can have drinks and food and talk with each other. There are a whole bunch of deluges in the fairy world. Each one has different drinks and food to eat and drink. Most deluges don’t cost much to get in. some don’t cost anything. The ones that don’t cost anything though have expensive foods. Some of them even have age limits that you have to be. Most deluges have people who serve the drinks and people who serve the food. Most of the workers are teenagers because they need the money.

The deluge was made because before it teenage fairies were talking with people everywhere. This wouldn’t be a problem except for they were getting in the way of the elder fairies. Because of this the elder fairies got together to discuss the problem. They decided that they should build a place where the teenage fairies could talk without getting in the way of anybody. The fairies ended up building the first deluge. The teenage fairies loved it and it is almost always full. The elder fairies loved it to and made one or there selves as well.

Logistic - Logical View of Mathmetics

Logistic

Logistic is the name of the tree the fairies sleep in. Logistic is a huge tree that fits all the fairies with room to spare. The fairies however only sleep in it because they spend most of the day outside. The fairies have been sleeping in the tree for over 10 generations. They sleep there because no animals can get to them. Well some animals can but they don’t harm fairies. The great thing about the tree is that as the fairy population grows so does the tree. That’s why the fairies can live there so long.

At first the fairies slept in bushes. But sometimes on windy days they would blow away and the fairies would be lost. Or the wind would knock the fairy down and hurt them. The elder fairies got together to find a solution. They decided they needed a new place to stay. So they sent out younger fairies to look for a place. The fairies were out for a few days. When they came back they didn’t find anything. All the fairies were sad until a real young fairy came and said he found this huge tree. The elder fairies decided that would be where they would stay.

Controversial - Matter Causing Debate

Controversial

Controversial is a car that fairy’s have to get around their world. Fairy’s use this car when their wings are tired. Older fairy’s use this car a lot because they have trouble flying a lot. The younger fairies don’t usually use this car because they think flying is more fun. The cars run on ink and that’s why they use the eloquent. The only down side to the car is it can’t fly. That’s why the fairies try not to use it. And the car goes slow. Its max speed is half of the speed of a flying fairy.

The car was invented because one day a fairy was flying and got distracted by a bird. The fairy slammed into a tree and broke his wings. A doctor told him that he would not fly ever again. So a scientist invented a device that would carry him so he didn’t have to fly. At first it was extremely expensive but then he learned how to make the car faster than before and it became cheaper. With it less expensive people started getting them without needing them. Now with the car made, the scientist is making a plan so you can still fly.

Static - Constant

Static is a waxy goo that is used to replace regular glue. The fairies use it when they run out of glue in there fairy homes. The fairies don’t like using it though because if you want to take something off that you glued on with static you will have a really hard time. Sometimes when the fairies try to get something off the glue it rips whatever they glued it to. The glue comes from honey and other materials. Also the fairies don’t like using it because it can sometimes glue their wing together and everyone knows how bad that is.

At one point in time the fairies banned the use of static. They banned it because some fairies got their wings stuck and couldn’t get them apart. The fairies that couldn’t get them apart had to get it amputated. Can you imagine a fairy without its wings? Fairies don’t look like fairies without wings and that’s why they banned it. After they banned it the fairies ran out of glue. With no glue they had to do something. The fairies agreed to use it until they could find a substitute.

The fairies found that they could make less sticky glue if they added water when making static. With the new glue the fairies could do much more. The old static however is still being used for construction when they need something strong. The new glue is actually the only glue used now. The fairies after seeing how good it was made it the main glue to be used.

Fraught

Fraught - to be emotionally stressed

Fraught is the word that fairies use to describe a scared fairy. They use this word when a fairy is scared by something like a squirrel that they didn’t see. They also say it if a fairy is being chased by a bear. Luckily for the fairies they are faster than the bears so they always escape. Some fairies use the word to tease other fairies.

When a fairy gets told that they were fraught they get offended. Because of this many fairies got into fights and many of them ended badly. Because of this the fairy leader band the word from being used. The problem with this was now the fairies couldn’t call it anything.

The fairies tried to come up with another word for it but couldn’t. They tried as hard as they could but couldn’t think of a good word. After a long time of thinking the fairy leader found a solution. He decided to let the word be said but it could not be used in a mean fashion.

Dynamic is what you say when describing different dyes. Like red dye, blue dye, green dye, orange dye, etc. in the beginning fairies would just say different colored dyes. But then they decided that it wasn’t technical enough. So the fairy community decided to make a name for it. The fairies came up with a whole bunch of different names. The names that the fairies gave just weren’t the write ones. The fairies just couldn’t find the right one. The fairies even offered a reward for whoever could come up with a good word. The fairy community gave up.

The fairy community did not know though that there was a young fairy who knew the word that would be the most perfect word for it ever. The only problem was that the fairy was in another town and did not know how to get to the town where the community was. The fairy tried to find somebody who knew the way to the town. She asked everybody in town but nobody knew where it was. Well that isn’t entirely true. There was this one person who knew but he was the meanest fairy in the whole world. Nobody even dared to ask him anything. But she was desperate. After thinking it over for a very long time she decided that she had no other choice. She walked up to the door very slowly. In her mind she wanted to go back but she had to get to the fairy community. She knocked on the door and the man opened it. He invited her in and she sat down. After talking for a while the man who everybody thought was mean told her how to get there. She thanked him and went to go to the fairy community to tell them the right word.

Once she got to the fairy community she had to find the leader of it. She asked around but nobody stopped to answer her. She went into the town but when she asked somebody they wouldn’t tell her because they want the reward. She wondered around the building looking for somebody. Finally she asked someone who took her to the leader of the fairy community. The person she asked was the leader’s personal assistant. They got to the leaders office where he was. She asked him and he was amazed. It was perfect. He announced that from now on they would call it dynamic.

Eloquent - Forceful and Fluent Expression

Eloquent - Eel pens

Eloquent is when fairies use eels as pens. The fairies use eels as pens when the run out of ink for regular pens. At first when fairies ran out of ink they would just go looking for ink. But all of that changed when the oldest fairy alive decided to find a new type of ink. One day they couldn’t find ay ink so the oldest fairy gave the idea to use eels. Ever since the only thing they use for ink is eels. The eels don’t mind though because once the fairies are done with the ink they put the eels back in the pond where they came from. The fairies use the eels even more now because they don’t run out of ink. Sometimes now the fairies write so much that there won’t be a single eel in the pond at times.

Some fairies even say that the inks from eels are better than the original ink. The inks from the eels don’t smudge like the original ink. The eels ink also dries much faster. I think that this will be a problem soon because the eels aren’t being able to live their lives. The eels are getting annoyed that they are being used so much. Some of the eels have decided that they don’t want to be used as pens any more.

Now there are only a few eels letting the fairies use them as pens. The fairies now have to find the ink that they used a long time ago. The eels that stopped being used as pens convinced the other eels to stop being pens. So now there are now no eels being used as pens. So now the fairy land is back to normal.

Approbation – an act of approving formally or officially

There are times when young fairies tend to be a little wild. They go about picking hardtack and using the gel inside it to paint leaves and rocks. Taking the colorful puffs they fly about placing the colors all over the meadow. They paint various animal pictures where ever they find a flat surface. Eventually, though, they will get caught. They are taken before the fairy courts which are full of disapproving adult fairies. As the young fairies are brought before the courts, they have to face their parents which is never fun. The parents tell them how disappointed they are in them and then they have to stand before the judges and face their punishment. They usually receive approbation. They have to go around where they painted the meadow and clean it up. It takes several days because when hardtack hardens, it is almost impossible to remove. They have to scrub for hours. This takes the young fairies away from all their fun which makes them really unhappy.

Approbation began several hundred years ago when the first disobedient fairy took off and colored up the meadow. It was a shock to the whole fairy community. It took the fairy leaders a long time to figure out how to punish the poor young fairies. It was finally determined that they can clean up the mess that they made. It did not go over too well with the ones who had to do the cleaning up, but it has been used as a punishment for the last 256 years.

Tipple - Drink

Tipple is a game that is played by fairies. They put a pebble on a stick where it balances but barely. They fly by it and who ever makes it fall looses. There are sometimes tournaments for tipple. The champions get a medal and a trophy. Tipple is a very old game from hundreds of years ago. An old man was bored and came up with this very fun game. Ever since it has been a world wide sport. If you ever walk in a meadow, you might be lucky enough to witness a game of tipple. If so, hide or else the game ends and they all scatter. So take care of what you are doing. You might be lucky enough to see a fairies’ good game of tipple.

Celerity – rapidity of motion or action

Green edible tree

In fairy villages, there is a kind of tree that fairies eat as well as humans. Fairies strip the “bark” off the tree and eat it. Celerity is delicious and also has a festival in its honor. The only true problem with celerity is that humans invade the villages (without knowing it) and steal the celerity while destroying the village. Celerity is stringy and some strands are used in jewelry, furniture, nets, or as rope to hold things together. The green color in celerity is commonly used as a die for clothes or furniture as well as art. At the bottom of celerity is a white, hard thing used for furniture or softer tools such as utensils, cook wear, and plates and bowls. Mainly things in the kitchen. Celerity is not only a snack, but a drink. Celerity juice is good and filling. Mainly baby fairies drink it but it is used at parties or festivals, too. So as you can celerity is used in a fairy’s everyday life.

Drubbing - To beat severely

In the world of the fairies there is always a party going on. One of the favorite things for them to do is dance throughout the night. There is a wonderful band that the fairies have that play really good. One of the instruments that they use is the drubbing. It is a large box shaped thing that has blades of grass strapped tightly over it which gives it its name. As the expert players began tapping on the grass, a sound like “drubbing” floats across the meadow and sets the beat for the music and the dancing.

These instruments became a source of pride for the players. As they progress in their musical abilities, they take ownership of each drubbing and begin to change them into something belonging to them. One will put painted pictures all around the sides of the drubbing. Another will stick flower petals in funny designs. There was one who painted his girlfriend all over the box. He changed it after one party when his friends began to pick on him too much.

Drubbing has become such a popular thing. Years before it was just a part of the music, but recently for some odd reason many of the girl fairies began to really go crazy over the ones who played on the drubbings. They would cheer whenever they played and would follow them around the party and even later at other events. It was downright embarrassing. At first. The drubbers began to walk a little differently as they were now the popular ones in the band. For the first time in fairy history, drubbers began to be noticed and be popular. They really enjoyed that.

Drubbing has changed over the years, but the beauty of the sound they make has not. If you happen to be lucky to hear them, pay attention to the soft beat that directs the music. You might be able to be this lucky if you lay in a meadow for at least an hour and tune out all other noises. Listen closely and you will begin to hear the party strike up under the starry sky.

Forebore – to have an intuition or premonition

Forebore is a pig with four horns. Forebores are really mean to fairies and are known to trample their villages. They can and will eat fairies as well. There was a time way back when a whole heard of forebores came and attacked a whole village. That village is gone and the few survivors were moved into another close by. There is a game played where a fairy must touch the horn of the forebore… and survive. This is an exceptionally dangerous sport and causes much death. The fairy counsil and most parents disapprove but they don’t stop. Forebores are very dangerous but are also sacred. I don’t know why. My best guess is that fairies lack common sense.

Treacle - Molassas

Treacle is a special treat fairies eat made of sap and dandelions. They start with a dandelion head and cover it with sap. After the sap dries, fairies sprinkle the top with a few dandelion leaves. This is a special treat and has a festival in its honor. Sometimes they add chocolate or other hard to get items. The fairies that make them are called Treaclists. They are honored as well. Every March 4th they celebrate Treacle Day so maybe then you could be lucky enough to stumble across their parade.

Shindy - a row, rumpus

A birthday party

Every time a fairy-let, or baby fairy, is born they have what is called a shindy. It lasts all day and night starting as just a normal party until sunset when the newborn fairy-let is introduced to Fairytopia. All the fairies kiss the baby on the forehead for good luck in a long and healthy life. After this is done, the fairies grab a partner and dance. While the fairies dance, the proud parents sit on a throne made of birch and the fairy-let lies in a crib of birth, fold, and gems. When all the stars are in the sky and the fire is lit, the parents dance and the god-parents watch the baby. After the shindy, the parents and the fairy-let spend the night in the Hollow Tree Hotel. In the morning, the shindy ends and the family goes back home.

Grog – a mixture of rum and water

Grog is a terrible and deadly disease to the fairies of Fairyland. It is very common and is not contagious at all. The reason grog is so common is because the fairy’s leaf-like clothes are made with the oily skin of a frog. All they do is swipe their hand against the frog and zip off with the oily substance which acts as a paste for the fairy clothing. Grog is given to a fairy if the frog croaks during this simple procedure. After twenty terrifying days of grog, the fairy either dies or if the fairy lives, they are sent to the Fairy and Wings Community Hospital. Here they live for a few days until they are healed, but they will never fly again so their wings are removed and put under the transplant list. Sometimes a lucky fairy will regain the ability to fly. In which case they are put back to work at the clothes factory as a clothes worker and no longer as a paste collector. Being a paste collector pays good, too! Fairies are paid as much as one butterfly wing and a snail shell. Because of the well paid job, paste collectors usually live in a whole toadstool! Most fairies live in a hollow tree with many other fellow fairies or they live in tulips and roses. If a fairy gets grog, they are treated well and if they live, great respect is given to them.

Alacrity – liveliness, briskness

Lack of sleep

Alacrity is a special kind of paint that is used to cover up damage done by humans. These large creatures are not well known for the delicacy, and they tend to trample quite a bit of the vegetation of the forest and fields. As they walk along they walk all over the flowers and grass. They reach out their hands and tug on branches and vines. They are not the nicest to nature. So, every day a special force of fairies take up their pails of alacrity and go out into the forest to follow behind the humans. Quietly, they follow them making repairs to the flattened grass, the crushed violets, and the broken twigs. They have to be very careful not to get caught because a few of these humans are quite tricky. They have sharper ears than most humans and their eyes are able to pick up the slightest movement. It is only because of them that there are even stories of fairies at all.

Alacrity is taken from a special plant that grows beside the brook. It looks like any other daisy flower, but it never closes its petals at night. It absorbs the rays of the moon and the dust from the stars to produce the special paint needed for the damage patrol. The plant is well guarded and revered by all throughout the fairy kingdom and even by all the animals.

Beware on picking daisies by the creek. You might feel a few “bites” that drive you away. It is just the well aimed arrow of a warrior fairy guarding the sacred flower.

Aridity – extremely dry

A flower only found in a forecastle

Remember the forecastle? Well, an aridity is a flower only grown in a forecastle. It grows in hot shaded parts. An aridity is large (about 1 cm across and 2 cm tall) and heavy. It has powder in its petals to give health to a fairy when they need it.

Aridities are yellow with red spots and a blue-gray stem. Their petals are nice and soft. Fairies clothes are made out of the petals and their shoes are made from the stem. When an aridity dies, it is buried and it grows into a dandelion.

The aridity is also a symbol of luck. A fairy would take their paintings of the flower and place it above their fireplace. This would give luck to the house.

This is why we must treat dandelions nice because that “weed” may have saved a fairy!

Forecastle

Forecastle – any sailor’s quarters located in the forward part of a vessel

The king of the fairies live in a castle with 4 parts - the west, east, upper, and lower parts. All the king’s family lives with him in all parts except the upper part. That is the king’s very own room. The forecastle is beautiful with gold trim. The walls are sea blue and the windows are a clear crystal. All the windows are not a plain shape. They have a unique design. The forecastle is over 3 feet high covered by magic to look like a rock (remember that fairies are only 3 centimeters high).

A forecastle can never be found by humans. That is why fairies are “not real” to humans. The forecastle has been around for 500 years and can never be destroyed for the fairies protection. Once the east part needed fixing but other than that the forecastle is in top notch condition. The Forecastle is an important part of the fairy world.

Pre-possessing

Owning something belonging to humans

Fairy hunters are fairies looking for interesting stuff they could steal. If a hunter comes back with a human made item they sell it. The costs range from 5 to 6 butterfly wings. When a fairy buys it they call it pre-possessing something. It’s special to pre-possess an object. It brings good luck, too.
Sometimes a human finds what a fairy is pre-possessing. Doing this causes a human to be shocked. Really, it’s the fairy biting him.
Only fairies can pre-possess. Once a human has their item back, it’s what a fairy calls annoying. You’ll never know if a fair has pre-possessed an item of yours unless you’ve been “shocked”. Even then, you can’t be sure. Fairies don’t steal, they find. So if you’ve lost something, you lost it, don’t blame the fairies.

Corpulence

Corpulence – bulkiness or largeness of body

The fairy’s most favorite food is corn and only a chosen few that to have corpulence can collect it. You see, to gather corn is a tough job. You must chop the corn stalk down with an axe. Then you must shave off the leaves surrounding the corn cob. When the “shaving” is done, twenty male fairies with a lot of corpulence will carry the cob off to fairyland where they pluck the corn from the cob. After five chosen fairies complete the plucking, the corn is wrapped and sent to the market where they could cost as much as half a butterfly wing! Corn is rare for fairies because it is hard work and it is only around during the harvest. Oh, and farmers have no need to worry about aliens in the corn field. It’s just fairies and they like to make designs while chopping which they do apologize for. Fairies also love corn so much that they have a habit of using corpulence to seal corn from humans! So watch out! The best way to protect your corn is to keep it near the color black. Fairies are colorful and hate black. There eyes don’t even have black on them. So keep your eye open!

Demur

Demur – the act of making objections

The demur in a fairies life is when they are shown how to fly with their wings which they do not get until they are 5 hours old. This can be difficult since the young fairies are so eager to begin using those wings. The demur is a serious time as the Demur master tries to calm the young ones. They could hurt themselves if they aren’t careful and do not pay attention as they move about. They could easily fly right into a tree. When the Demur master gets them calm down, he lines them up on the leave of a sunflower. He begins to teach them the breathing exercises that they will need to know as they fly through the air. This takes awhile as all young fairies are impatient. They don’t care about breathing. They just want to go. Next comes how to hold their arms as they go through the air and around the plants and trees. It includes teaching them how to stop and turn quickly to escape anything chasing them. After a few hours of this, the Demur master allows them to begin to flap their wings and try to fly in place. Only after all small fairies have learned to do this can they begin to move off the leave. They are allowed to only fly to the next sunflower and then to the next and then to the next. By the end of the sunflower row the young fairies are flying like they have been flying for years. They begin to fly all around the valley to show off their new skill to their family and friends. Cheers rise up as all the older fairies watch the young ones. The demur time is a very important and fun time.
