Organisation
The Agroscope Liebefeld-Posieux Research Station ALP operates at two locations: Liebe-feld and Posieux. Its area of research ranges from animal feed to foods of animal origin (meat, meat processing, milk, dairy products and apiculture products). ALP also carries out controlling, implementation and consultancy tasks.

Tasks
A postdoctoral position is available, starting in October 2008, in the Laboratories of Aroma and Taste and of Biochemistry at Agroscope Liebefeld-Posieux Research Station ALP.

The mission of the project is to investigate on the microbial generation of aroma compounds in collaboration with an industrial partner. Selected food-grade bacterial strains will be screened for their generation of interesting aroma compounds in appropriate media using instrumental analysis such as an MS-based electronic nose and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The analytical part will be accompanied by organoleptic assess-ments. The volatile aroma compounds generated by selected strains will be further charac-terised by GC/MS in combination with olfactometry using suitable extraction methods.

Profile
Candidates should hold a PhD degree in Life Sciences (analytical or food chemistry, biologi-cal sciences) and sound experience in aroma analysis or volatile compound analysis. Know-how in GC/MS techniques is a prerequisite and interest in microbiology would be an advan-tage.

As an interdisciplinary scientist and a team member you will build a bridge between re-search groups in the fields of aroma analysis and microbiology. You should have excellent communication skills in English also and team spirit. Knowledge of German or French would be an asset.

2009 Rewi Alley Scholarship in Chinese Studies

BACKGROUND
The Rewi Alley Scholarship in Chinese Studies was established by the Rewi Alley National
Committee to mark the occasion of Rewi Alley's birthday and in recognition of his humanitarian and
literary work in China over more than 50 years. The purpose of the Scholarship is to encourage study
and research on China, preferably in New Zealand.
REGULATIONS
1. The Scholarship shall be known as the Rewi Alley Scholarship in Chinese Studies.
2. The Scholarship is tenable at a university or other institution in New Zealand approved for the
purpose, or, with the consent of the Selection Panel, without formal enrolment at any institution.
Where appropriate facilities are not available in New Zealand, the Scholarship may be offered
towards study undertaken abroad.
3. The Scholarship is open to persons who are New Zealand citizens, or who are permanent
residents of New Zealand, for study on any aspect of life in China.
4. The Scholarship shall be offered in alternate (odd) years, i.e. 2009, 2011. In 2009, the
Scholarship will comprise a sum of $1,000.
5. The award of the Scholarship shall be made by the Scholarships Committee of the University of
Waikato on the recommendation of a Selection Panel established for the purpose by the New
Zealand Asian Studies Society.
6. When submitting your application, you should attach a written statement on what your future aims
are, how your studies are relevant to life in China, and what you would use the funds for if the
Scholarship were awarded to you. Attach two written academic referee reports in support of your
application.
7. Applications for the Scholarship must be submitted on the current application form to the
Scholarships Office, University of Waikato, Private Bag 3105, Hamilton, by 31 October in
alternate (even) years, i.e. 2008, 2010.

New Jersey World Trade Center Scholarship Fund 2009

The New Jersey World Trade Center Scholarship has been established by the Legislature to aid the dependent children and surviving spouses of New Jersey residents who were killed in the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001, or who died as a result of injuries received in the attacks, or has died as a result of illness caused by exposure to the attack sites*, or who are missing and officially presumed dead as a direct result of the attacks. Those incurring the full-time cost of attendance at an eligible institution, having lost the financial resources of a parent or spouse, are deemed to have financial need. In 2008-09, qualifying individuals may receive up to $6,500 per academic year, not to exceed the actual tuition, fees, room and board charged. Scholarship amounts may change as a result of changes in program funding and student's other available financial assistance. Scholarships will apply to both in-state and out-of-state institutions.

What is the purpose of the e8 scholarship?
The purpose of the e8 scholarship is to support outstanding students pursuing advanced studies in sustainable energy development and to encourage meaningful contributions to the collective body of knowledge about this subject.

The e8 considers an outstanding student to be one

For a German Subproject (The Standardized Mind: Implications of Neuroimaging on a Theory of Human Reflective Action ) we seek to appoint a Post-Doc Researcher for three years. You will be working primarily on neurophilosophical and neuroethical questions which

The Laboratory for Neural Control of Movement of the Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute (MRRI), a division of the Albert Einstein Healthcare Network in Philadelphia, has an opening for a full-time BA/BS- or Master's-level research assistant.

The position involves assisting on studies of perceptual-motor behavior in stroke patients as well as behavioral and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies of neurologically intact individuals. Applicants should have a strong academic background in cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, motor control, or a related field. Coursework in statistics and research methods, prior research experience, and computer programming skills (C++, Matlab) are strongly preferred. Experience working with patient populations is desirable but not required.

Postdoc Position Cancer Biology Austria

A PostDoc position is available in the group of Maria Sibilia (Reserach Unit Tumorbiology) at the Institute for Cancer Research to study the role of inflammatory cells in tumor development.

The major focus of the Sibilia laboratory is to understand the molecular pathways leading to tumor development using the mouse as a model system. Tumor-cell intrinsic mechanisms are being investigated at the molecular level by analysing how signalling via the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR), a receptor tyrosine kinase frequently amplified and overexpressed in human tumors, affects the development of epithelial and glial cells and tumors. Moreover, the lab is also studying tumor cell extrinsic mechanisms and particularly focusing on the role played by various innate immune cells (e.g. DCs) in host defence and tumor immunity or tolerance. The ultimate goal is to translate this knowledge to human patients to develop rational and effective therapies for the treatment of human cancer.

Applicants interested in this position need a PhD in genetics, Molecular Biology, Molecular Medicine or a related field. Only candidates with a strong background in Cell Biology, Immunology, Molecular Biology will be considered. Salary is according to FWF standards and the position is available as soon as possible. Two PhD scholarships and one Postdoc position in Ultra-high-speed optical communications
Non-linear optical switching for extremely high data rate communications (NOSFERATU)

Two PhD scholarships and one Postdoc position are available at DTU Fotonik, Department of Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark from October 1, 2008. All assignments are for three years.

As part of a new national research project, Non-linear optical switching for extremely high data rate communications (NOSFERATU), two PhD positions and one Postdoc position at DTU Fotonik, will be available. NOSFERATU is funded by the Danish research council for technology and production sciences, and aims to develop the world's first optical communication system capable of handling 1 terabit per second serial data transmission. To accomplish this, the project will deal with fundamental aspects of optical pulse shaping including pulse compression, the development of ultra-fast optical switches based on various technological platforms such as non-linear fibres, highly non-linear glass-waveguides and Lithium Niobate devices, as well as develop network solutions and functionalities as a platform for a 1 Tbit/s optical Ethernet (1 TE).

The two PhD candidates will interact strongly with each other and the Postdoc researcher in the course of the project, but have separate topics to focus on. The PhD topics are:

1. Pulse shaping: Pulse compression for 1 Tbit/s, shaping of pulses by optical methods (Optical Fourier Transform technique and Optical Differentiation technique) and develop a general theoretical description frame. Exotic pulse shapes for various optical functionalities (phase marking and novel switches).
2. 1 Tbit/s optical Ethernet: Investigate optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) networking issues for optical Ethernet solutions leading to 1 TE, starting from 100 GE or from standard 10 GE equipment. Develop a multiplexing structure with synchronisation of incoming Ethernet packets to a MUX clock.

The Postdoc researcher will be working on monitoring techniques for 1 TE and switching at such high speeds, as well as be co-supervisor for the PhD students, and be partly responsible for the identification of key functionalities and switches.

PhD scholarships
The candidates for the PhD projects should have backgrounds in optical communication systems/networks and/or physics. PhD candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the successful candidates will be enrolled as PhD students at the Technical University of Denmark. Postdoc position
The candidate for the Postdoc position should have a background in optical communications with experience in optical signal processing, and be well acquainted with non-linear optics. The candidate should hold a PhD degree and have a significant publication list in international peer reviewed journals and/or conferences.

The salary and appointment terms for postdocs are negotiated in accordance with the current collective agreement for Danish University faculty members. At the moment, the annual salary of a postdoctoral candidate is approximately 360,000 DKK (48,000 EUR) + pension.

Description: Research assistantships for Ph.D. students whose academic work focuses on child/family issues so as to enhance development of a research excellence in this area. These nine-month awards carry a stipend of $14,000 and a full tuition scholarship of up to 21 credit hours. The awards are for one academic year only. The Graduate School will consider nominations for renewal of funding in subsequent competitions (eligibility for funding in limited to three years). Renewal, however, is by no means automatic as The Graduate School's intent is to spread the opportunity to the greatest number of eligible students.

Eligibility: Incoming or current Ph.D. students whose academic work focuses on child/family issues.

PhD Scholarships in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Poland

Faculty of Physics & Applied Computer Science (AGH)
and Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry of Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN)
(both of Krakow, Poland) in cooperation with research institutes of 10 European countries run a common PhD programme in Nanoscience.

The project is financed by European Union Innovative Economy Programme with
Foundation for Polish Science.

8 PhD positions are opened in 2008 and 4 in 2009. The project duration is nearly 5 years, of which 6 to 24 months the students will spend abroad, mostly in Western European institutes that enter the consortium. Project

Mathematical model for chatter prediction in multi-stand cold flat rolling mills

The Australian steel manufacturing industry is an international leader in advancing technologies

and improving quality and productivity. Annual steel exports generate about two billion dollars in

national income and are still growing.

The market for rolled strip products is intensely competitive, and continued success is critically dependent on productivity and quality. This project aims to develop comprehensive dynamic models for stability and transient analysis of self-excited chatter of multi-stand flat cold rolling mills under a wide range of operating conditions. It will assist Australian steel manufacturers in understanding and controlling chatter of rolling mills, and improving quality and preventing production from breakdowns.

Applicants:
The Australian Postgraduate Awards Industry (APAI) are available to outstanding candidates seeking to commence full-time study towards a doctoral or masters honours degree. Each scholarship has duration of three years and provides a stipend of approximately $25,000 (tax-free) per year but this amount can be supplemented. Postdoctoral position at CMS IPN Lyon

Applications are invited for a one-year postdoctoral position open in September 2008.
The IPNL CMS group has major involvements in the ECAL and Tracker detectors as well as in the preparation of top and Higgs physics analyses.

The position is part of the project "SUSY-HIGGS" financed by the French "Agence Nationale de la Recherche" (ANR) involving the CMS groups of IPNL, the Institut Pluridisciplinaire Hubert Curien (IPHC) in Strasbourg and the Laboratoire Leprince-Ringuet (LLR) at the Ecole Polytechnique in Palaiseau. This project targets Higgs boson and SUSY particle searches, in particular in decay channels with tau leptons in the final state, through the use of particle flow techniques.

The successful candidate will work largely on the reconstruction and identification of converted photons which have been shown to be important for tau lepton identification.

Applicants should have a PhD in experimental particle physics.
Ideally, they should have some experience in object-oriented programming and the C++ language. The possible working languages will be French or English. IIM Kozhikode, a leading Post Graduate institution of excellence in management research, education, training and development in the Asia-Pacific region has started its Doctoral Programme, Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) in the year 2007-08. IIMK recognizes the fact that no top class academic institution of higher learning will be able to preserve its quality without emphasis on top quality research. The FPM of IIMK aims at developing top quality researchers and faculty resources for academic institutions including IIMs, and it envisages itself as a leading source of top quality management experts and thinkers for business organizations, government and society in India and abroad.

The FPM programme of IIMK strives to incorporate the strengths of similar programmes in other IIMs while it also tries to introduce new strengths and certain innovative features in the programme. The purpose of such efforts is to overcome any weaknesses in the Fellow Programmes elsewhere and to bring out the best in the Fellows coming out of the programme.

The programme duration is normally 4 years while it can be completed any time after 3 years. If sufficient grounds exist, the tenure of a Fellow participant can be extended, with reduced rate of fellowship, upto 4½ years.

The admission to FPM of IIMK will be open to all Indian citizens, Non-Resident Indians, Persons of Indian Origin and foreigners. Admission will be based on academic qualifications, performance in the qualifying examination, personal interviews and work experience. The main research interests of this lab revolve around signal transduction, gene expression and metabolic regulation in plants and microbes, using rice, Arabidopsis and Spirulina as experimental systems. One specific theme is to characterize the molecular basis of nitrate responsive gene expression and nitrogen use efficiency in rice, using a combination of biochemical, molecular biological, pharmacological, genomic and bioinformatic approaches.

Another theme is the high-throughput screening for G-protein regulated genes and signalling

The incumbent should be a 1st class M.Sc./M.Tech holder (<24 yrs) in any field of relevance with strong training/experience in biochemistry/molecular biology/genomics/bioinformatics, with a UGC-CSIR NET JRF or equivalent source of independent fellowship valid for at least 4 years from the date of joining. Other requirements include strong aptitude for research, excellent communication skills in English, interdisciplinary outlook and ability to master new

Registration for the current version of the Graduate Record Examinations® (GRE®) General Test, has been closed in China and India.

The pattern of GRE is going to be changed and the new GRE would start in September 2007.

The current GRE General Test will no longer be offered after July 31, 2007.

Registration for the revised GRE General Test begins on July 1, 2007.

The first test dates will be September 10, 15 or 16, 2007 (depending upon location), and September 29, 2007.

There will be no testing in August 2007.

Test Content Changes

The revised General Test will measure the same general skills that are measured on the current General Test: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing. However, each of the sections will be revised to better focus on skills that are necessary for success in graduate school.

The New Verbal Reasoning Section

Measures the ability to
o understand the meanings of words, sentences, and entire texts; understand relationships among words and among concepts
o select important points; distinguish major from minor or irrelevant points; summarize text; understand the structure of a text
o analyze and draw conclusions from discourse; reason from incomplete data; identify author's/speaker's assumptions and/or perspective; understand multiple levels of meaning (such as literal, figurative, text's intent, etc.)

Emphasis on skills related to graduate work, such as complex reasoning
o increased emphasis on inferential reasoning
o increased emphasis on verbal reasoning in context
o increased number of reading comprehension questions based on a greater variety of reading passages
o reduced emphasis on vocabulary out of context (no Antonyms or Analogies)

Inclusion of new question formats other than traditional multiple choice (e.g., highlighting a sentence in a passage that serves the function described in the question)

Test Administration Changes

The revised Verbal and Quantitative sections are changing from an adaptive test format, where the questions presented to each examinee vary according to his or her performance, to a linear test format, where all examinees testing at the same time receive the same questions.

The GRE General Test will be administered on computer on approximately 30 test dates worldwide. The number of administrations in any given region will be based on the test volume in that region.

To address possible security concerns, starting times for the test will be staggered across time zones.

An expanded Internet-based testing network with about 3,500 test sites will be available worldwide.
