Santaclos no es bienvenido en mi mesa

Aarrggh, hay veces que decisiones ridiculas (la verdad retarded es mas apropiado) te cuestan $$ a ti, al mensete y de hecho a toda la mesa. Jugando 2-5 en el Aria, llega Santaclos, compra 200 que es el minimo de la mesa y se va all in ... antes de que le den cartas !!!, todos se tiran y el mensete en el big blind llama. Antes de que el dealer ponga el flop, Santaclos anuncia que hara eso en cada mano, y al parecer no miente, pues hay gente que confirma que efectivamente el es Santaclos; Santa lo unico que pide es que quien le llame, ensene sus cartas antes del flop (esto es despues del all in). Le dice a mensete que si no lo hace, simplemente se levanta y se va a otra mesa. Mensete no acepta, para mi pesar :( , el board viene J high, Santaclos abre sus cartas que resultan ser un J6, gana los 400 y se va a otra mesa, donde procede a hacer lo prometido, todo mundo en esa mesa feliz, Santaclos procede a perder unos 1500-2000, pasa un buen rato, pregunta si ya todos le ganaron al menos un pot, le dicen que si y se levanta a repartir felicidad por otro lado. Esos 2000 pudieron haber quedado en nuestra mesa, pero una decision incomprensible alejo al buen Santa.

Olimpiada Nacional de Matemáticas 2011: Parte I (La llegada y un examen que parecía fácil)

Domingo 13 de Noviembre de 2011, 6:00AM, termino de hacer check in en el aeropuerto internacional de Ciudad Juárez, esperando mi vuelo rumbo a la ciudad de México. En esos momentos recuerdo como una vez mas tomare un vuelo de domingo de las 7AM CJS-MEX, que me llevara a una Olimpiada Nacional, como tantas otras veces, específicamente como un domingo de otoño de 1991, donde me dirigía a mi primer nacional en Oaxtepec, en aquel entonces un profesor de prepa sumamente joven, enormemente emocionado de ir como entrenador de Chihuahua; creo que esa fue la primera vez que me subí a un avión.
Llegue al DF y ahora a buscar como irme de ahí a SLP, creo que las opciones eran ir a México-Norte y de ahí a San Luis, o agarrar un camión del aeropuerto a Queretaro y de ahí a SLP. Me compro un Venti Latte en el Starbucks y le llamo a Rogelio para que me confirme la opción de Queretaro, me la confirma y nos ponemos a hablar sobre el nacional y el examen, hablamos quizás demasiado que el Venti Latte, se desespero y se enfrió. Yo había estado en el comité de Álgebra y Numeros para analizar la lista larga del examen; pero no estuve en el equipo que tomo la decisión final. Aun así, conocía ya que problemas serian el 3,4,5 y 6. Rogelio me informa que hubo cambios, que alguien descubrió que el problema 3 ya estaba por ahí en algún texto, después me entere que fue Leo y sus superpoderes para detectar problemas conocidos quien así lo hizo. Rogelio me dice que el que iba a ser problema 5, seria ahora 3, y un problema de los finalistas, uno de rectángulos, ocupara ahora el problema 5. Los 3 problemas involucrados ya los había hecho, el ahora ex-3 me parecía adecuado, me llevo un buen tiempo hacerlo, el ex-5 que paso a 3, se me hacia un problema muy bonito, pero fácil, no para 3, aunque en esos momentos estaba influido por una solución fácil que había hecho que estaba mal; el futuro determinaría que fue un buen 3; el nuevo 5 también lo había hecho y no me gustaba mucho, el problema es bonito como problema, simplemente a mi no me gusta ese estilo de problema para concurso. Le dije a Rogelio que se me hacia que el examen iba a quedar todavía mas fácil, pero pues ya veríamos. Ambos estábamos muy animados de ir al nacional, Rogelio llegaría hasta el lunes. Antes de colgar, me comento el que seria problema 1, uno de Combi de 25 focos, lo oi muy rapido, pero creo que si me lo aprendí antes de volver a mi Venti Latte.
El viaje en Primera Plus, del aeropuerto a Queretaro fue bastante cómodo, siempre que un camión tiene wi-fi, la vida es mejor. Decidí hablarle a Irving, para que me diera sus impresión del examen, a Irving también no le gustaba mucho el nuevo 5 y le parecía que el examen quedaría fácil, nos imaginábamos muchos exámenes perfectos, al final no fue así. Le pedí que me mandara el 2 que yo no conocía por mail, para irlo haciendo en el camino. Hice el problema 1 de lo que me había dicho Rogelio por teléfono, lo hice tan rápido, que pensé que seguramente me estaba acordando mal de algún detalle, inclusive le escribí a Irving para que me mandara la redacción para revisarla, pero pues me acordaba bien, simplemente era un 1 muy 1. Empece a hacer el problema 2 en el camión, rápidamente descubrí las peripecias de intentar dibujar con compás un circulo en un camión en movimiento, después de una 1/2 hr (mmm, quizás mas) salio y me pareció agradable el problema, me gustaba como problema 2.
En Queretaro tuve que esperar una hora para mi transbordo a San Luis, el viaje fue sin contratiempos, pase dormido la mayor parte de el. Al llegar, me gusto que la central de autobuses estuviera enfrente del hotel, como me había informado Isai, también le había preguntado a Isai (quien vive en Chihuahua) si de pura casualidad no sabia si había una peluquería cerca del hotel, y pues "de pura casualidad" no sabia; pudiera parecer extraño preguntar algo así y esperar respuesta, pero Isai es Mr. Datos, valía la pena intentar.
En la recepción me encontré a Toño, a Rita, a Malu y a muchos mas, a todos los salude con mucho cariño. Ahí estaba, domingo por la tarde de inicio de nacional, no querría estar en ningún otro lado en esos momentos ..........

Inducing a triple barrel bluff

He jugado bastantes manos interesantes en el ultimo mes, y siempre quiero escribir las mejores historias, pero por querer escribir "demasiado bien", termino no escribiendo nada.
Así que por ahora escribiré simple, sobre la primera mano que jugue hace una 1/2 hora.
Llegue al juego de 2-5 NL, y me sente con $500, mi primera mano jugable fue AcTc en middle position, llaman 2, pense en hacer raise pero solo llame los 5 y un senor de semblante indu o paquistaní llama también a mi izquierda.
El flop viene Ad8d3c, checan y decido checar, Musharraf apuesta 25, que suena a position bet. Llamo sin mucho interes; un 5s en el turn y checo otra vez, Mush sigue en su papel y apuesta 65, llamo, simulando que espero diamantes. El river es un Qc, y por supuesto estoy dissapointed de que mi diamante no llego y checo, Pervez toma su tiempo, yo le actuo como que me voy a tirar si apuesta, y con las 2 manos empuja unos 125, repaso un poco la accion y el board y llamo; "good call" me dice, esperando que le enseñe mis cartas, pero ni maiz, si quiere ver mis cartas tiene que enseñar su bluff, no lo enseña y se tira, y yo recibo el pot de unos 450 y mis cartas se van al muck boca abajo.

Natasha and drunk Bob in the game

El sábado la idea era irme temprano a jugar, temprano para mi es como a las 9PM, pero pues con la desvelada del día anterior, me volví a quedar dormido en la noche unas horas, me levante a las 2AM, y decidí irme a trabajar a las 4AM, vaya con los horarios de trabajo de un jugador de poker.
Llegue al Aria a jugar 2-5 NL, me senté con mis usuales $500, aunque en el Aria a diferencia del Bellagio te puedes sentar hasta con $1000, yo por lo general me siento con $500 o $700, dependiendo de las fichas en la mesa y quien las tenga. Y en esta mesa había bastantes fichas, decidí comprar 700 para ver que tal estaba la mesa.
Rápidamente me di cuenta que la mesa no estaba muy buena, todos parecían saber lo que estaban haciendo y pues lo único bueno era que había muchas fichas, en esto estaba pensando y viendo la posibilidad de levantarme, cuando llega Drunk Bob al juego, white old guy de mas de 60, bastante tomado, esto automáticamente cambia la dinámica de la mesa, no solo porque lo mas probable es que Drunk Bob deje bastante dinero, sino porque empieza a haber mas acción y algunos de los que juegan bien empiezan a jugar mal, así que era claro que debía quedarme y esperar mi turno de enfrentarme con Drunk Bob.
Efectivamente Drunk Bob empezó a perder dinero y volvía a comprar, llego mi oportunidad cuando me sale AJ, llaman varios y solo llamo los $5 en late position, Drunk Bob hace raise a $15 y obviamente todo mundo quiere jugar con Drunk Bob, unos 5 llaman y llega a mi, mi mano no es tan buena, pero debe ser mejor que la de Drunk Bob que es lo unico que importa, asi que hago un reraise a $90 para que me dejen solo jugando con Bob, este responde llendose all in, como son $300 en total, claramente todos los demás se tiran y yo llamo, esperando ser favorito, Bob tiene 8c6h y pues efectivamente soy favorito, esta es hasta el river pues después de un KT3T sale un 6 y Bob gana un buen pot; no hay problema, a pesar del beat se que es cuestión de tiempo, lo único malo es que hay muchos compitiendo por el dinero de Bob y solo es cuestión de ver quien se lo queda; aunque también cabe la posibilidad de que de repente se quedara dormido en la mesa.

Pasan las horas y hay varios pots grandes, yo pierdo otro all in con QQ en una mano con 2 nuevos que tenían poco de haberse sentado, un musculoso afro-americano con el que ya he jugado antes y se que juega bien hace raise a 20, yo estoy en el boton con QQ y solo llamo, pero entonces un cholo gringo (gang member?), la hace 100 desde el small blind, mmmmm, esto tiene toda la finta de squeeze play, un squeeze play es una jugada donde hay un raise y calls después y el squeezer si siente que el que hizo el raise originalmente no tiene tan buena mano, hace un raise grande para ganar ahí el pot, pues los callers lo mas probable es que no llamen, para mi sorpresa el musculoso afro llama los $100 y entonces yo tengo una decisión fuerte, yo se que mi buen afro no tiene tan buena mano como yo, asi que el no me preocupa tanto y si el cholo esta haciendo squeeze pues entonces mi jugada es clara, all in, como con $600, mi buen cholo insta-call (y entonces se que estoy frito), y el buen afro también llama !!, quien sabe con que, no me sale ayuda en el board y Mr. cholo gana el buen pot con AA; y yo en esos momentos ya voy perdiendo unos $1000 por la noche, pero la mesa promete, así que compro otros $500.
Bob entre su juego errático, se la pasa haciendo también todo tipo de comentarios erráticos, como buen borracho. A mi derecha tengo una muchacha joven y guapa, a la que de repente Bob le pregunta, "Are you Russian?", la muchacha le responde en excelente ingles que no que es de Costa Rica, y Bob dice: "I don't know, you look like a Natasha to me", así que toda la noche Costa Rica girl es Natasha, y Bob se la pasa toda la noche haciendo todo tipo de preguntas extrañas sobre Costa Rica y Rusia.
Yo por lo general tiendo a pensar que las mujeres no juegan muy bien al poker, las mujeres jóvenes y guapas menos, pero después de ver un rato jugar a Natasha era claro que era un buen jugador y por si alguna duda me quedaba, de repente llego Huck Seed (campeon mundial de poker en el 96) a saludarla y platicar con ella, era claro que debía tener cuidado con Natasha.
En el asiento 9, estaba un middle age white guy de Kansas, que constantemente decía que como era de Kansas no sabia lo que estaba haciendo porque la gente de Kansas es tonta, tenia muchas fichas y hacia muchos bluffs, pero claramente era buen jugador, no tenia nada de tonto Kansas guy.
Mi enfrentamiento con Natasha, llego en una mano donde Kansas hace raise a $20, varios llaman, incluyendo a Natasha, yo estoy en el botón y veo mis cartas, KK, perfect, así que hago un raise a $90, no pequeño, porque no quiero que llamen todos, pero tampoco tan grande porque quiero que llame alguien, Kansas guy no decepciona y llama los $90, los demás se tiran y Natasha se queda pensando y al final decide llamar, lo cual me sorprende. Aunque ya habia jugado ella varios pots con Kansas y Kansas le habia estado ganando. El flop vino Q75, con 2 clubs, Kansas checa, Natasha checa y yo hago una apuesta semi-debil de unos $130 para que parezca AK, Kansas se tira, y Natasha se queda pensando y la sube a $325 (con solo unos $250 detras), por la manera en que aposto y el tiempo que se tomo no me asusto mucho, asi que me voy all in y tengo mas que ella, Natasha esta forzada a llamar, le digo que tengo KK y hace mueca de resignación ya que tiene QJ, el turn sale un 7 y en el river una Q, para mi bad beat de la noche, Natasha se disculpa y pues solo me queda decirle "no problem".
Para esto, Bob ha estado gane y gane pots, tiene un desmadre de fichas en su asiento y una chica de las chip-runners (las que le cambian el dinero a uno por fichas), se la pasa ayudandole a acomodar sus stacks, es inutil, chip-runner termina de acomodar, Bob juega otro pot y una vez mas hace un tiradero, a la chica parece no importarle, dice que con Bob siempre es lo mismo, los demás al ver su noble tarea le insisten a Bob que le debe dar una green chip de propina (una de $25), a lo que Bob accede.
Yo al volver a comprar unos $600 mas, ya estoy metido $1800, y mi intención ya no es ganar del día, sino recuperar algo de lo perdido; Bob calculo que debe tener como $2500, así que hay esperanzas.
Los rayos del sol matutino ya hace tiempo que entraron en el casino, mis juegos de baseball (MLB) del día, empiezan a las 10AM, y como a las 9:30AM me levanto para ir al Sportsbook a hacer las apuestas de mis sistemas. Regreso a la mesa y al poco tiempo se queda libre el asiento a la izquierda de Bob, inmediatamente pido cambiarme, así que mis $900 y yo nos movemos al asiento 2.
Bob, después de ganar muchos pots, parece que ya no se involucra en tantas manos y esta jugando mejor, pero al intentar hacerme platica, me queda claro de que esta totally wasted.
No pasa mucho tiempo y mi oportunidad llega, Bob en el small blind y yo en el big blind, llaman 2 y Bob hace raise a 35, veo mis cartas y una vez mas KK, le hago raise a $90, para que se tiran los otros, que asi lo hacen, Bob se me queda viendo y quien sabe que tanto me dice, algo como que no tengo nada, y la hace $275, perfecto, la pienso un rato y me voy all in de la manera mas desafiante que puedo para que Bob no se me vaya a tirar y llame, el buen Bob llama casi inmediatamente con Jd8d !!, ya solo esperar que no salga un bad beat, el flop sale medio feo, QJ9 con un diamante, yo esquivo la mirada para no ver turn y river, el señor asiatico a mi derecha me dice "good", salio un 3 y un 7 y le gane el super pot a Bob, el dealer esta confundido y le quiere dar todas mis fichas a Bob, diciendo que me cubre, jajaja, los demás le dicen que que rollo si el que gano fui yo, y despues de un rato reacciona, cuenta mis fichas y me da ese total del stack de Bob, que despues de perder cerca de $1000 conmigo ya solo le quedan unos $300, que al rato los pierde en otro all in contra mi buen afro y su QQ. Yo con el pot de Bob, llego a cerca de $2000, al perder sus últimos $300 Bob se retira, y claramente es tiempo de retirarse. Son las 11:30 AM, Natasha y los otros miran de reojo mis fichas, claramente deseaban que Bob me hiciera un bad beat pero no se les hizo, me voy a la caja y tengo $1899, para una ganancia de $99 del día, la cual la considero un triunfo.
Ya es casi mediodía y el bullicio de Domingo en Las Vegas se empiezan a sentir, junto con sus típicos 100 grados Fahrenheit y los miles de turistas buscando el camino del aeropuerto para regresar a su normalidad, .... yo justo acabo de salir de la mía.

Fin de semana de poker

Los viernes y sábados por la noche-madrugada es el mejor tiempo para los poker pros para jugar en los casinos en Las Vegas. Miles de turistas arriban semana a semana los viernes por la tarde a Las Vegas para divertirse sacando a relucir su 2a. y 3a. personalidad, para irse los domingos y volver a su lugar de origen con su rutina y su 1a. personalidad; en el intermedio divirtiéndose a morir y dejando una buena cantidad de dinero en los casinos. En las Vegas hay turistas todos los días, pero no en la cantidad en que se dejan venir los fines de semana, así que esos son los días en que voy a jugar mas.

Este viernes no fue excepción, aunque en realidad empece algo tarde a jugar, llegue a la 1AM del "viernes" al Aria, y rápidamente procedí a sentarme en un juego de 2-5 No Limit. Compre $500 en fichas y ni habia terminado de acomodarme cuando le doy una ojeada a mi primera mano, par de reyes, me encanta KK, creo que es mi mano favorita (después de AA obvio), una señora de semblante inofensivo en sus 50's en early position hace raise a 15, llega a mi y la subo a 60, todos se tiran y la señora llama.
Me encanta tener una supermano en la 1a. mano, porque como no te conocen asumen que eres un maníaco si empiezas haciendo reraises, el flop vino bueno para mi, T74 rainbow, la señora checo y yo aposte 80, esperando que no me creyera y me llamara, pues no solo no me llamo sino que la subió a 200, y le quedaban otros 100 atrás, obvio que no iba tirar mi precioso KK en mi primera mano y menos contra una señora inofensiva de 50 y me fui all in, llamo inmediatamente pues tenia TT, nada de ayuda en el turn y river y asi como asi, Mrs. inofensiva me gano cerca de $400, mala forma de empezar el día (bueno la madrugada ya que era como la 1AM), saque otros $500 y a tratar de ahora si empezar, esa mano ya quedaba para la historia. Despues de una 1/2 hora de estar jugando me di cuenta que la mesa era terrible, todos parecían saber lo que estaban haciendo y ninguno tenia finta de turista y pues no tenia sentido seguir ahí, perdí otros pots y solo dure 1 hora con $600 menos en mi cartera, decidí que el 2-5 me estaba aburriendo y me dirigí al Bellagio a buscar un juego de 5-10, donde los pots son mucho mas significativos en términos de dinero y eso me hace concentrarme mucho mas, pero pues también hay muchos mas pros y es mucho mas difícil ganar.

Llegue al Bellagio y solo había 2 juegos de 5-10, uno de ellos short-handed (las mesas son para 9 jugadores, si hay 6 o menos se considera short-handed), le di una ojeada al line-up de la mesa, estaban algunos con los que ya había jugado antes y sabia que eran muy buenos, y los otros tenían una cara de pro que asustaba, ningún turista feliz, indefenso y deseoso de dejar su dinero. A pesar de las ganas que tenia de jugar 5-10, me discipline y mejor pedí mesa en un 2-5, la mesa que me dieron no estaba muy buena, pero afortunadamente se quebró rápido y me cambiaron a otra, para mi felicidad rápidamente me di cuenta que era una mesa perfecta, gente feliz platicando, tomando y pasando bien el rato, síntoma de turista, había un joven asiático que me pareció pro, bueno, en realidad todos los jóvenes asiaticos me parecen pros, pero con el pasar de la noche me di cuenta que solo era otro jugador recreacional mas, que le gustaba perder su dinero de $200 en $200, hasta que creo que perdió unos $1000 y se fue. Había un muchacho de Chicago que tenia muchas fichas en la mesa, creo que como unos $2000, muy agradable el muchacho y jugaba bastante raro (o sea mal), tirando AA por ejemplo en el flop sin ninguna razón de peso, pero a mi por alguno razón insistía en blofearme una y otra vez, era un patrón, el blofeaba en el river sin nada y yo le llamaba con manos medianas y le ganaba, se enojaba y me decía que porque no me tiraba con sus apuestas "diseñadas" para que me tirara, yo nomas me sonreía y en mi mente pensaba que como me caía bien, le debía decir que sus bluffs eran muy obvios, pero nah, para que le digo, un mandamiento en el poker es que nunca te debes de poner en medio de un sucker y su deseo irremediable de separarse de su dinero.
El bad beat del dia fue el siguiente, un señor en sus 50's hizo raise en el boton y defendí mi bind con A7, salio Q27, cheque, aposto y le llame. En el turn salio el A, que era la carta perfecta para mi, pues si checaba otra vez, seguro el iba a apostar, así que decidí checar, no me hizo quedar mal y aposto y pues le hice raise creo que a 90, ni la pensó mucho en irse all in como con unos 250 mas, ughhh, me quede pensando, pues no me gustaba nada su all in, tendrá AQ?, tendrá 22? o como había 2 diamantes quizá solo tenia una mano como AJd, y pues con un par y el flush draw se estaba portando agresivo, me fui con esa posibilidad y llame con mis 2 pares, el señor solo tenia A8, o sea nomas un par, pero pues faltaba el river por venir y de las 44 cartas había 3 8's, y pues ahí viene el 8, y perdí el pot de unos $800, el señor se disculpaba diciéndome que se confundió y se fue all in porque pensaba que tenia A7, jeje, nada como cometer un error que le cueste a otro, solo le dije que no había problema, porque pues en realidad no había problema y seguí jugando como sin nada.
Las horas pasaron muy a gusto, buena platica, era el mejor jugador en la mesa y ya como a las 8 AM me levante después de ganar unos $900, que con los $600 que había perdido en el Aria me pusieron en +$300.

El "sábado" estuvo mas interesante pero supongo que lo platico en otra entrada pues esta ya esta muy larga y pues como ahora también me desvele y no he dormido pues ya tengo sueño.

Fui a jugar live unas 5 hrs, esta vez 1-2 NL y siempre es bueno sentir que eres el mejor jugador de la mesa, tuve una buena sesión sin ningún problema para controlar la mesa.

Hubo una jugada que me llamo la atención, porque mas o menos da una idea del nivel de juego, no me acuerdo de todos los detalles, pero la parte importante es el river;

En un board AJJQA con 3 diamantes, están heads up, después de haber llamado en el flop y turn, un regular (malo), apuesta $20, esta heads up con un turista (malo), quien le hace raise a $40, el regular piensa poco y le hace raise a $160, entonces el turista toma su tiempo y yo empiezo a elucubrar que tienen ambos:

La apuesta del $20 no dice mucho, aunque con el board implica que probablemente tiene el A, el donk miniraise implica probablemente otro A, pero entonces el raise enorme ya esta dificil que sea un A naked, asi que yo me pongo a pensar que el regular o tiene AQ o tiene JJ, manos que le ganan a un A naked, el turista piensa y piensa y piensa y al final llama, que tiene, un A? nooooo, una J? noooo, un flush? nooooooo, el inocente tiene KT; I mean, there is bad and BAD, y por su parte que tiene el regular, AQ, JJ? of course not, tiene un A3 y se aventó un tremendo value bet, jajajajajajaja.

Quizas alguien estara pensando que el regular hizo eso para hacer que el turista tirara un A y no hicieran split, (ademas de que no tuviera AQ), nah, zero chance el penso eso, para empezar el turista nunca hubiera tirado el A, ese regular no pensaba mas alla del 2o nivel, y simplemente hizo raise porque tenia full house que es una mano poderosa, jajajajajaja.

La verdad me dio mucha risa la jugada de los 2, pero ilustra muy bien el juego en el que tuve la suerte de sentarme esta noche.

Busy, busy, ........ never stop improving

I have been pretty busy with poker, spending a lot of hours studying and playing. I remember I used to study a lot of poker situations but I kind of lost that. I'm glad is coming back, since you should never stop studying, you should never stop improving your game.

Since I'm basically haven't studied and played a lot of poker last 2?3? years, I have to make up a lot. There are too many good players, and so many of them work pretty hard on their game, so, it's a big battle. but I'm happy I'm fighting.

Now lets variance pass and the results will come. I always say to my students that if you're pretty good at something and you have the passion and work pretty hard, success will follow.

I don't know if I'm still good enough, but the passion and the work it's here again, lets see if I can maintain the pace.

To say the online poker No Limit games here in the States are tough is an understatement, they are damn hard and most of the time you're playing against regulars, most of the time against the SAME guys on all your tables, since almost all regulars multitable. I'm trying to learn how to play a lot of tables, I'm not a fan of multitabling since I think it has done a lot of damage to online poker, but I don't think the big sites are going to do anything about it, so I better learn how to do it, it has been a expensive lesson, but I'm on my way, I think I can handle 10 tables now, but still if the rest of the players are pretty good then what's the point. Hopefully I'm wrong and there's still money to be made online, buy boy, it is tough; since I'm pretty stubborn one thing that is good of all this, it makes me study and work harder, since I don't want to be the "bad regular", I want to beat all of them, lets see how it goes, but if I don't see a big change online, probably I just play more live.

Respetar tu bankroll

Empiezo el año con un bankroll pequeño para jugar, asi que yo creo me la pasare grinding 2-4 and 3-6 online y 2-5 live en Las Vegas. Con el ocasional torneo de vez en vez.
Es muy importante que respete uno su bankroll, lo debes tratar con mucha delicadeza, esto es si no te quieres quebrar, si eres profesional no debes de jugar un juego para probar que eres "muy bueno", no tienes que probarle nada a nadie y ademas, nobody cares, si eres profesional, este es tu trabajo y tu bankroll es tu instrumento de trabajo y una de las razones mas importantes por las que juegas es para pagar los bills, claro, para los jugadores jovenes que no tienen familia, es mas dificil que vean el juego de esta forma, pero para los que vivimos de esto, es fundamental.
No niego que la gloria y fama de ganar torneos importantes por ejemplo, sea atractiva, lo es, pero no debe perder uno de vista las prioridades y el jugar poker no es muy diferente de cualquier otro trabajo, debes trabajar duro, debes mejorar profesionalmente, prepararte, sobre todo debes disfrutar lo que haces, you have to do your best and enjoy the ride, ... always.

Wow, we're in 2010, it's like living in the future. Hopefully it will be a good year, I have lots of goals, health, family, poker, economy, happiness in general; living and enjoying every moment.
I finished the year in a bad note pokerwise, I went to play live some 7 hours and won, then came back home at 8 AM and since I could not sleep and was the last day of the month, I decided to try to make it to Gold Status in PokerStars, it was a disastrous decision, since I lost a lot, I shouldn't have played that tired (but I did make it to Gold, lol).

But today it's a new day, a new year indeed and a new opportunity to make things right, but every day is, it does not have to be January 1st to start living a better life and get rid of the old, every day you have that chance, Isn't that wonderful?.
Every day you can do whatever the hell you want and improve yourself and be a better you, the past is gone forever, don't live in the past, don't live in the future either, live here, now !!!!! ....... life is good.

Una de las diferencias notables entre jugar poker online y live, es el numero de manos que juegas; mientras que online puedes estar jugando muchas manos a la vez y literalmente estar tomando decisiones importantes cada segundos, live la mayor parte del tiempo es contemplacion.
A veces los juegos son tan buenos live que simplemente una buena dosis de paciencia y tu ABC game es suficiente para ganar. Sin embargo este concepto de paciencia es tricky, a veces piensas que estas siendo muy paciente y por fin te llega una mano jugable contra el maniac, la paciencia no se debe terminar preflop, el hecho de que has tenido suficiente paciencia para aguantar jugar en muchas situaciones marginales, no garantiza que este pot sera tuyo, no debes echar el analisis por la borda, no hay tal cosa como merecer ganar un pot, no cometas el error de desesperarte postflop, esto me ha pasado montones de veces y es un leak que es muy costoso. En mi ultima sesión perdí todo mi stack por ejemplo con un par de 88, en un board T9494, porque el maniac me debía seguramente de estar blofeando, y aun cuando si existía esa posibilidad, analizando mas detenidamente la jugada, era mas mi willingness to play a pot que un objetivo análisis de los posibilidades de estar siendo blofeado lo que me hizo perder un buy in. La paciencia no solo se aplica preflop, nunca eches tu analisis por la borda, la paciencia es importante pero sin tu analisis situacional en realidad no vale gran cosa. Even when you have waiting a lot, sometimes you just have to let it go, yet again.

What a night yesterday at Aria, it was full of good poker action, playing 2-5 NL and I was involved in so many good hands to fill the remainder of the year on the blog.
For example one hand I raised preflop with JJ, 2 callers, flop came QJ9, I have a pretty good hand right?, well, I folded in the flop after a bet, call, raise, reraise, all in, all in, fold !!! (my actions bolded), the other 2 guys happened to have QQ and KT !!!!; another one when I was "trapping" with the same JJ and a board QJ447, raising the guy in the river, just the "correct" amount and just being called with QQ !!!!. Another one preflop with a raise, reraise, rereraise, call!, and me going all in and doing my best AA impersonation, making both of them fold !!
I won't tell the details of this and other hands right now, but I do want to make this point. Hands like this is why we love poker, and it's a hell of a lot different to experience them live than online, live all the action mounting, all the decisions, the whole table excited, the all ins, the agonizing sick fold, the agonizing sick call,looking into the souls of your opponents, the trash talk, the mind games, the word games, analyzing all your options, just being there !!!, I guess all that beats the hell of "Honey, can you believe what just happened" (that's when you're one of the lucky ones, some have to settle with talking to their dog about the incredible poker hand).
I know internet poker and live poker are two different animals, hell yeah, just saying live is way, way more fun than online.

Esta noche jugue en Aria 2-5 NL otra vez, esta vez solo unos 90 minutos, gane unos $350 y me fui porque la mesa no estaba muy buena.
La mano mas interesante que jugue fue la siguiente, en la que se puede ver claramente la importancia de estar en posicion:

Con 10c7c llame en LP, quizás era MP que parece LP porque el juego era 10-handed, lol. Llame porque llamaron varios antes de mi y la mesa no estaba haciendo mucho raise, asi que la probabilidad de que alguien hiciera raise despues era poca; llamaron varios mas los $5 y como unos 7 vimos el flop:

Como pueden ver tengo los nuts pero pues con tanta gente jugando, seguramente alguien mas las tiene, aqui mi estrategia es tratar de ganar lo que se pueda, es decir si alguien apuesta solo llamar, si no, apostar poco, para que agun KJ o algo asi se quede, so much for the plan, BB apuesta $20, EP le hace raise a $60, mmmmmmm, no me gusta la accion pero pues los nuts son los nuts y solo llamo los $60, los demas se tiran y ahora BB decide irse all in con $261 mas, arrggghhh, porque arrrggghhh diran ustedes, despues de todo tengo los nuts no?, pues si, pero el problema es que a la mejor todos los que estamos en la mano los tienen y alguien puede tener 10s9s por ejemplo, o sea nos puede ganar en el river, asi que a lo mas vamos a ganar poco (casi nada) o perder mucho, EP se queda pensando y decide llamar los $261 (tiene como $500 mas atras), demontres, ahora mas probabilidad de que alguno tenga el flush draw, pienso un poco y decido que como EP no se fue all in, no tiene el flush draw, asi que si existe un flsh draw solo es posible que lo tenga BB, pero pues este no era particularmente un buen jugador, asi que igual y solo tiene el T y ni cuenta se ha dado del flush draw, asi que decido llamar los $261 y me quedan como $600 atras.

El river es un Ad

Perfecta carta para mi, pues tengo posición sobre EP, el checa como era de esperarse y que hago yo, pues obviamente ya se que tiene así que me voy all in, se queda piense y piense y piense como 3 minutos, agonizando pensando que me llego el full house y que yo andaba llamando con 2 pares, jaja, seguramente, pero pues al final decide llamar y se alivia al ver que todos solo tenemos el T, y hacemos un split, BB efectivamente ni flush draw tenia solo el T, lo cual hace que su movida all in sea bastante mala. Fue una mano divertida donde casi no gane nada pero jugue el river perfecto y casi me sale, pero pues se puede ver claramente la importancia de la posicion y la importancia de poner presion en tus oponentes.

City Center grand opening was today, Aria casino opened at 11:59PM Wednesday, I tried to be there on time, but I couldn't find any parking and wasted a lot of time, at the end I could find one between the Montecarlo and New York New York casinos, I wasn't really late since by 12:10AM I was already in the poker room which was really packed, and by 12:15AM I was already playing my first hand at the Aria, probably the first 2-5 NL game that opened ever !!, my table was good, since only 4 of us (out of 10) bought in for $500, rest of the table bought between $200 and $300 which is always a good sign. My stack at the beginning of the session

The first hand I was UTG, so I was the first to fold a hand, next hand I won my first pot betting a K22 flop with my 78o; everybody started to play really careful, but as usual after a little while people start to get anxious to play pots, and my table didn't dissapoint, there were two German guys, one of them who tried to bluff me a little too much; one guy who was known by a lot of the people there since he was a WPT finalist or something, 3 young friends with one of them pretty happy and drinking, tipping dealers left and right and just hemorrhaging money at the table, 2 other middle age guys who looked like pros but played pretty tight for my taste, basically the table was pretty, pretty good for me, since I could not identify a single player who was going to be a threat. Don't remember many hands, one I raised to 20 with 88 in EP, German guy called me, flop was J72, I made a $35 continuation bet, he called, next card was a 7, I decided to check and he bet $50, I called, river was a 4 and I checked again, he promptly bet $100, I thought for a while and was going to muck but he insisted on showing his hand to his friend and when I hinted I was gonna call, he made a motion to show his hand, there was something about his willingness to show that didn't add up, so I called and he just had AK. Another hand I remember was a pretty funny one, between German guy, happy guy and a pretty nice lady, they were all in after the flop, German guy won the main pot, but happy guy and lady didn't realized there should be a side pot and both mucked their cards !!!, which I found pretty hilarious.
Session went pretty smooth and I booked a pretty good win, without too much effort to be honest, they let me win some pots because they didn't use too much pressure and also some of them insisted on calling all my value bets, so this was my stack at the end after 5 hours of playing (with $3 chip on first plane)

By 5AM I was really tired, so I decided to call it a night, but I think I will be back today and the weekend and hopefully I find some other good tables to play, there is a good chance since the place is new and everybody want to play and be there.

The place is really something, all City Center looked beautiful, Aria, the Veer towers, Crystals, the tram, everything was great and it was very enjoyable just to walk here and there, there was art everywhere and all was really modern and cool, man, I love Vegas.

I'm yet to see 3 out of the 5 best picture drama nominees, I so want to go and see Avatar, trailer looks great, I liked The Hurt Locker but not as much as the critics circle, and I liked Inglourious Basterds a lot, being a big Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction fan, I'm glad Tarantino is back up there in the awards circle. Hopefully I can find some good movie bets and hopefully I don't chicken out this year and bet like a man, lol, but seriously, I have left money there by not betting more last years, every year I have made money betting on movies so far and I want to continue that lovely tradition.

Perdí, pero estoy feliz

Porque estoy jugando !!!, en estos 4 días logre jugar mas de 2500 manos en Internet cash games, lo cual es un tremendo logro para mi, jugué 2-4 NL, 3-6 NL, 5-10 NL y 30-60 LH, de hecho hasta algunas manos de Razz 30-60; ja, hasta un torneo de $33 (en el cual llegue al dinero, a whopping $62). Gane en todos los limites con excepción del .... 2-4 NL, así es, el que se supone debe ser mas fácil para mi y me fue horrible, tan horrible que opaco mis ganancias en todo lo demás y salí perdiendo un poco por los 4 días. En un siguiente post explicare porque creo que se dio este fenómeno, por lo pronto me siento muy bien porque estoy jugando bastante lo cual es bueno, solo paciencia y los resultados vendrán.

Checa el flop y dejalos imaginar que el pot ya es de ellos

Con la agresividad de los jugadores en internet hoy en dia y puesto que la mayoria de ellos son buenos, no dejan pasar una oportunidar de apostar, hacer value bets y comprar pots, tienes que ingeniartelas para contrarrestarlos .

Por lo general si tu hiciste raise antes del flop, no es bueno dejar de apostar el flop con manos marginales, pero a veces sobre todos con jugadores que se creen que al checar tu el flop ya el pot es de ellos conviene hacerlo.

En la siguiente mano eso fue lo que hice, es un juego de 3-6 NL en Stars, hice raise en posición con una mano marginal, me salio solo un 7 en el flop lo cual es bastante marginal, pero eso fue suficiente para ganar unos $70 extras nada mas por checar el flop.

algunos de estos jugadores compradores de pots no lo pueden evitar, les checan el flop y automáticamente viene su apuesta en el turn y como les llamaron pues tienen que aventarse otro bluff en el river; quizás a muchos les pueda parecer mi jugada pasiva, pero en el medio actual tan duro de jugar en Internet donde parece que todos son pros o semipros pues te las tienes que ingeniar. No digo que jugar al check-call sea bueno, lo que digo es que en ciertos spots quizás sea la jugada mas profitable.

This Saturday, Sunday morning I arrived at The Winn to play 2-5 NL at 1AM, I started winning but at the end after some 11 hours it would be a disastrous session, pretty good table but I just couldn't win; I've been there, so I just need to suck it up and hope to have better luck next time.

The most interesting hand was the following:

UTG raised to $15, everybody called and I had 87o in LP, so I called with the rest of the table, family pot.

Flop: 7h7d2h

pretty nice, exactly what I want, UTG bet $20, UTG+1 raised to $80 !!, folded to me, I didn't think much of his raise, but I wanted to price the flushes over there, my options were call or raise, the original raiser was a bad player and if he had a big pair he was going to play his stack with that flop, I opted for raising, and I did it t $215, now the fun came, the next guy pondered my reraise and flat called !!!!, damn, I did't like it at all, but then the button guy went all in for like $1600, what???, what the fuck, folded to me, pretty big pot by now and I had about $600 left, so I thought my chances now where pretty, pretty slim to win and most possible I was way behind (one of the two HAS TO have 22 or something like A7 right?), so I decided to fold, next guy since he had more than $1000 behind agonized to make the decision and at the last moment decided to call his stack with 74s !!!!

Button guy had AQh !!!!!, blanks (Td and Kc) on the turn and river and 74s guy won a monster pot. It was the most commented hand of the night, everybody commenting about if button's decision to go AI was terrible or just pretty bad, if my decision to fold was right and if 74s guy decision to call was the right move.

Creando tus pots en un torneo

Just for a change, decidí ponerme a jugar un torneo online, el de $150+12 en PokerStars, no se porque razón, pero me dieron ganas de jugar un torneo.

A pesar de tener mucho tiempo de no jugar torneos me sentí cómodo, la verdad no capte grandes diferencias con respecto a la ultima vez que jugué torneos online seguido, aunque una cosa que me extraño, fue que no se completaran los jugadores para el guaranteed de $100,000, con 661 jugadores, casi se completa.

Para ganar un torneo necesitas de toneladas de suerte, ganar all in tras all in, pero en medio de todas esas manos en las que solo te queda esperar la gracia de los dioses del poker, existen algunas manos básicas en las que tu creas tu suerte y son las que te permiten seguir adelante. Esta fue una mano en una etapa no tan relevante del torneo, pero fue la mano donde gane mas BBs de todas las manos que jugue en el torneo (unas 67), y lo mas importante, fue una mano creada, donde solo dependí completamente de mis acciones y los dioses del poker fueron simples espectadores.

Tenemos un caller en early position, mi raise con AT es digamos semistandard, tengo posición sobre el caller, llamaron las blinds, asi que tengo posición sobre todos lo cual es magnifico. El flop no me trajo nada, pero al checar todos, es un buen flop para hacer un continuation bet, aunque 2 de ellos no cooperan llamando. En el turn BB checa y EP hace una apuesta debil, es hora de mostrarle que mi raise preflop si significaba un par grande así que le hago reraise, BB se va pero EP llama; así que o tiene un flush draw (good) o tiene un 9 y no me cree (bad, but not that bad), en el river checa y apuesto pero no all in, para que parezca value bet y se tira. Muchas veces es difícil tirar el tercer barril, después de que ya te llamaron flop y turn, pero hay circunstancias en las que tienes que hacerlo y esta es una de ellas.

This Friday (Saturday morning), I decided to go to play some 2-5 @ The Venetian, I got there around 2AM (nice starting working hour heh), and ask for 2-5 NL, there was a table with 2 seats open, so they sent me there and looking the stacks at the table I decided to buy $600, at the Venetian you don't need to post your first hand, so you get to play it for free and since I was on late position I decided to start playing. I got Kd3d, I was still busy with my wallet when the action came to me, nobody has called, so, I decided to just play the hand and call the $5, nobody called, just the blinds and we got to see the flop.

Flop: Qd7d4d

Wow, really nice for a first hand, but since almost no people in the pot and no preflop action, usually you don't win much, they checked to me and I of course checked. Turn was the 4s, LB bet $15, BB called the $15, nice, somebody had to have something, so I decided to raise to $65, why $65, since I was new to the table, they have no image of myself and I wanted them (or the one of the two with the better hand) to think I was buying the pot and called me if they have a Q, well, little blind didn't disappoint, but instead of calling me, he reraised to $115, BB folded; interesting, what does he have?, I saw no point on raising, so I decided to just call the $115 and see what happens with the river, river card was Kh, so we have a board:

He then decided to bet $250, mmmmmm, wait, a Q does not make much sense, so maybe he had a 4, a flush or a boat; or maybe he was full of air, continuing a failed resteal on the turn, betting that much with a 4 didn't make much sense either for me, if I was weak, that was way too much if he wanted me to call, so, flush, boat, air, I didn't see much value by reraising, so I decided to just call. He had 10d3d and I won the almost $800 pot.

Probably I would have played differently if this wasn't my first hand at the table, but I was pretty content with the way I played it, some may say I should have gone all in after the $250, but I don't really think it's the best play in the long run, since most of the hands that call my all in with that board (boat, A high flush) had me beat.

It was a good thing to start winning that night (morning?), since for the next 3-4 hours, I was not winning anything, not flopping any pair, lost the minimum with AA and KK, lost a turn all in, when I was a big favorite, all that crippled my stack, but I didn't lose my temper, just wait and wait, and eventually things came my way and after playing some 9-10 hours I scored a pretty good session.

Mis Lugares Preferidos para jugar No Limit Holdem en Las Vegas

Hasta ahora he jugado live NL cash games en Bellagio, Ceasars, MGM, Venetian, Planet Hollywood, Winn, Excalibur, Mandalay Bay, Mirage y quizás algún otro por ahí que no recuerdo al momento.

Solo he jugado 1-3 (1-2) NL, 2-5 NL y una que otra vez limit holdem, aunque muy rara vez, inclusive el 1-3 NL también rara vez lo juego y me he concentrado mas en jugar 2-5 NL, regularmente me siento con $500 y dependiendo de los stacks que haya en la mesa a veces me siento con mas (si es permitido por el casino).

Definitivamente mis 2 lugares favoritos para jugar son el Winn y el Venetian, a toda hora (de las que yo he ido) hay juegos, y el ambiente de estos 2 casinos para mi es mucho mejor que el de los demás. El parking lot en el Winn es super conveniente, aunque igual y no tengo problema en caminar lo que sea necesario para llegar al poker room de un casino, pero quizás el que el poker room del Winn este ubicado en un corredor rumbo al parking lot lo convierte en una distracción, imagínense nada mas la pasarela interminable de mujeres guapísimas en altas horas de la madrugada !!; el Venetian seguramente se convertirá en EL lugar para jugar poker en Las Vegas si no es que ya lo es, quizás ahorita vayan demasiados pros ahí para mi gusto, pero hasta ahora me han tocado suficientes mesas buenas, inclusive alguna vez que estaba en una mesa no muy buena por que parecía que todos eran regulares/pros, me pude aprovechar un poco de la situación puesto que ellos me veían a mi como el "turista" al que había que ganarle las fichas, y pues como no me conocían, eso hacia que no jugaran optimamente contra mi estilo de juego.

Trato de variar y jugar en la mayor cantidad de lugares posibles para tener un bajo perfil, pero sin lugar a dudas mis preferencias son por el momento el Winn y el Venetian.

Ya esta llegando el tiempo de que empiece a jugar en serio, o es eso o a pedir welfare, jajaja, pero si es una realidad que mi bankroll se ha ido extinguiendo, me he dado cuenta que es muy dificil ganar dinero cuando no juegas :)

Por lo pronto creo que jugare mas live games que Internet, principalmente 2-5 NL en los casinos de Las Vegas, he jugado un poco en los meses anteriores y me ha ido muy bien, esperemos que esto siga así y pues ya relatare mis andanzas en Sin City.
