In 2008, T.I. had reached the peak of his career and he took a leap of faith. The rapper had finally risen from being a popular rapper to achieving international fame. With that, T.I. decided to launch his AKOO clothing line.

T.I. had discussed the idea in 2007 and had some designs created. But, with his career at a peak, he decided to finally launch the line. Initially, AKOO was only worn in T.I. and Grand Hustle music videos. Soon, other artists began wearing AKOO and they began endorsing them.

Recently, AKOO announced Curtis Granderson of the New York Yankees had joined the advertising campaign for 2011. This is a major step for AKOO, who has primarily rappers and a few actors modeling their products. But, for an athlete to join the advertising campaign is a major step for AKOO separating itself from being just another clothing line owned by a rapper into something bigger. By the looks of things, the clothing line will be on the level of Rocawear and Sean John sometime in the future.

Towards the end of the 2010-2011 NBA season, the Charlotte Bobcats pushed themselves into playoff contention. Their late-season run was led by Gerald Henderson. For his first year and a half with the Bobcats, he was buried on the bench by coach, Larry Brown.

But, with the Charlotte Bobcats looking like a lottery team, team owner, Michael Jordan decided to replace Brown with veteran coach, Paul Silas. In the past, Silas had coached LeBron James and the Charlotte Hornets.

Under Silas, Henderson developed into a solid scorer, and at times, appeared as a gifted scorer. Michael Jordan has had faith in the emerging Henderson for some time. Ever since he drafted him, Jordan has been invested in his career in Charlotte.

There have been so many players compared to Michael Jordan, over the years. But, Michael Jordan has remained in the NBA since his final retirement. As the head of his own team, it is only right Jordan pass the baton down to one of his own players. In addition to promising to bring a star to Charlotte, Michael Jordan also said Gerald Henderson will be an All-Star next season.

This is quite a jump for a man who only averaged 9 points per game this season. But, he really turned it on towards the end of the season. Recently, Henderson underwent successful hip surgery and he will be ready to play by opening night next season. In the meantime, the final four teams in the NBA will battle things out for their own spot in the 2011 NBA Finals.

Pharrell named Creative Director at Karmaloop

Outside of his illustrous music career, Pharrell will soon be an executive at Karmaloop. Karmaloop has been known as an urban clothing retailer for some time. But, Karmaloop will soon be expanding into television.

Pharrell will be the creative director of a new project from the company called Karmaloop TV. He will be in charge of programming the new network. The network is geared to the first generation growing up in the internet age.

Much like what they have done with the clothing industry, Karmaloop says they want to give the youth something innovative and new. They want this new television network to be something the youth can call their own.

Derrick Rose wins MVP, Bulls drop Game 1

The Chicago Bulls have been on a tear since the start of the season. With all of the hype surrounding the Miami Heat, it was easy for the Bulls to rack up wins. Early in the season, the battle for first in the East was between the Heat and the third seeded Celtics.

During the offseason, the Bulls picked up Carlos Boozer, expecting him to take the leading role. Injuries stopped this from happening and Derrick Rose emerged. Without Boozer in the lineup for most of the season, Rose put up solid numbers and the Bulls benefited.

In the end, the Chicago Bulls did not only creep up to the top of the East, but also the top of the NBA. Facing off against the Atlanta Hawks in the second round, the good times were supposed to continue. Instead, the Hawks continued their streak of surprises. In the first round, they stifiled the Orlando Magic, who were expected to contend for a title.

Now, the Atlanta Hawks have managed to pull off a 103-95 victory in United Center, defeating the league's Coach of the Year and MVP on their home floor. Derrick Rose can find some comfort in the fact that he was able to win MVP in a field dominated by Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and Dwyane Wade.

To the left is a picture of one of the many designs of fledgling clothing line, Streetwise Gear. Over the past two years, Streetwise has been generating plenty of buzz, especially with the people wearing their products. But, this is no fly-by-night operation.

A part of human nature is being a product of one's environment. If a person grows up around people with an accent, they will have an accent. If a person grows up surrounded by violence, they will be influenced by violence.

Los Angeles, California is home to some of the most-brutal violence in the United States. The city is known for violent street gangs and violent music. Manny Rivera grew up in Los Angeles, surrounded by the music and listening to the music. While he was influenced by the violence around him, he managed to make a profit from it without breaking the law.

Manny Rivera is the founder of Streetwise Gear, having been a graffitti writer for some time. In 2003, he decided to take his designs from buildings to t-shirts and Streetwise was born. Following extensive reading, he decided to launch a full-fledged clothing line. Rivera partnered with Edgar Carrillo and the two men combined their talents in order to make Streetwise a successful entity. During the early years, there were struggles, but they managed to keep things running.

Streetwise Gear has been successful because Rivera and Carrillo are at all of the local events with booths set up, selling their product. Their hard work led to Streetwise being discovered by Compton rapper, Game, who has worn the products in some of his videos. Despite being "put on the map," the partners continue to promote Streetwise Gear on the street level, maintaining fans and buyers. Their shirts sell because of their artwork depicting the life on the other side of Hollywood.

Buyers truly connect with Streetwise and the message stitched upon each garment.

Last summer, a seemingly new clothing line emerged with a few short promotionals. The clothing line featured Lil Wayne t-shirts and was called Royal Gear. After a few weeks of promotion, nothing was heard from the line in months.

As far as most people know, Royal Gear does not have any products out. But, people are discovering more and more about Rudy Mardy, the designer of the products. Not only is Mardy the head designer of Royal Gear, he is also a company insider.

Earlier this week, Fo' Sho wrote a piece about Royal Gear and the holdup on the products. In this interview, the designer talks about this and how he ended up being a part of the clothing line. Surprisingly, Royal Gear has been in existence since 2008 and has changed ownership.

How long have you been doing art?
I have been doing art since I was a child.

What events led to you becoming a part of Royal Gear?
I started working with the Royal Gear project threw a friend of mine that referred me to Tevan.

In what ways will you be contributing to the advertising campaign?More or less just helping here and there with design and art vibe of Royal Gear.

Where did you get the ideas for all of those designs?
All original.

How were you affected by the change in management soon after your arrival to Royal Gear?
Well with all good things come change but one thing that has not changed is the work ethic of Tevan Savage.

Have things been better or worse since the clothing line went under new management?
Well the clothing line is still in its beginning stages but the future does look bright.

Do you think Royal Gear will have staying power against the other clothing brands?
YES!!! we just need to get the ball rolling.

Have you ever met any of the "faces" of Royal Gear?
Not face to face yet, but it is something to look forward to.

Were you excited when you were approached about molding Royal Gear into what it is today?
Yes, it is always exiting to be apart of something big from the get go.

Do you have full creative control of the clothing line?
Somewhat, but as far as the overall concepts that is left to the owner.

Nicki Minaj to launch Fragrance Line

The past year in hip hop can be summed up in two words, Nicki Minaj. Three years ago, Lil Wayne officially took over the radio waves and began shouting out Young Money. On the mixtape level, a lady named Nicki Minaj was winning men over with her curves and sexually suggestive lyrics.

In 2009, Lil Wayne added a new fan base when Nicki Minaj was signed to Young Money. When he went to prison, she took over the rap game, overlapping Drake. Now, Nicki Minaj is the biggest name in rap, after a high-profile feud with Lil' Kim. Nicki Minaj is focused on expanding her brand.

Recently, Nicki Minaj announced she was going to soon have her own fragrance line. She said the scent will not be bubble gum, despite what many may think. The fragrance will be summery, since Nicki's favorite season is summer. While she wants a summer smell, she also wants it to have a certain impact on the fans so they will continue to buy it.

There is no set date on Nicki Minaj's fragrance line.

Game talks Canada arrest

Last week, Game was excited about going to Canada for the first time in six years. The Compton rapper was going up North for a short performance. However, upon arriving in Canada, Game was arrested over his passport.

When news hit the media, it was revealed Game was arrested because of his ties to organized crime. Canadian officials could not risk having an international criminal come over. Game was initially supposed to spend two weeks behind bars.

50 Cent sheds light on past Jadakiss feud

In 2003, 50 Cent supposedly ended Ja Rule's career. Obviously, the memo was not sent to Murder Inc. In the middle of the G-Unit feud, Ja Rule decided to go back to recording the music that made the fans love him. The result of this was a top five hit, "Wonderful."

The song featured R. Kelly, at the time, the king of the R&B game, fresh off his work with Jay-Z. Ja Rule was back on top of the game and he had even made a song for the streets. Uniting with veteran rappers, Fat Joe and Jadakiss, Rule released "New York."

Last summer, New York City was hit with a product that has changed the fragrance game forever. The fragrance was the branchild of journeyman, David Marquis. Marquis has been thinking of Whyte T for years and he finally made it happen last summer.

Without any pushers and without any stores, David Marquis was able to sell many bags of Whyte T. For those not familiar with Whyte T, it is a bag of treats for the men who like to be clean. The product is very diverse with everything being in the bad. From the pretty boys, to the thugs, and the businessmen, Whyte T is a product they would like.

David Marquis, along with his partners, Jesus Rosa, and Darryl Warren. Marquis has often boasted of how the product sells itself. Every good salesman says this about his product, but the Whyte T men are among the few who are actually telling the truth. David Marquis said he had a bag and was walking down the street when he sold one product out of the bag for the going price of $35.

For $35, Whyte T gives you a nice bag, aftershave, bodywash, and lotion. Clearly, each product could be worth $35 within itself, proving the bag is ahead of its time. David Marquis has made this obvious and he would be glad to tell you himself.

Whyte T is a dream come true for David Marquis, as he has done so many different things. The Whyte T bag is really the first thing he went out and did for himself. Each time Whyte T makes the news, Marquis feels an extra sense of pride.

The profits from Whyte T have done enough to ensure the already well-off Marquis will not have any financial worries. He has taken some of the profits and invested them in other ventures in the clothing and fragrance market, he feels would work well for him. In the next few months, David Marquis' name will be on other products.

But, the main news about David Marquis over the next few months and for years to come will be about his innovative bag, Whyte T.

Coogi still profiting off The Notorious B.I.G.

Now-a-days, clothing lines pay rappers for the type of promotion, The Notorious B.I.G. was giving Coogi for free. Usually, when a clothing line is trying to establish a fan base, they set up some sort of partnership with a business or entertainer.

Hip hop clothing lines obviously do their best to team up with rappers before they end up launching their own lines. Rappers have not always thought as smartly as they do now. The Notorious B.I.G. built an international consumer base for Coogi for free, as he often wore their products in his videos.

Had the internet been as widespread as it is now, Coogi would have posted the videos on their website as a method of promotion. It was Biggie's unsolicited endorsement of Coogi that led to Sean Combs, the head of the Bad Boy label, home to Biggie, create his own Sean John line. Seeing how rappers endorse clothing lines for free, Combs decided to create his own for profit and Jay-Z did too.

Despite only being a rapper, Biggie had a great business mind and planned to expand. In 2000, he was going to retire from the rap game to focus on business ventures. Before his death, he served as Sean Combs' manager, as he began rapping.
The Notorious B.I.G. intended to launch his own record label to house his Junior M.A.F.I.A. camp. His untimely death ended this, but Biggie had big plans. Possibly, among his plans were a proposal to Coogi, or a line of his own.

Regardless, Biggie's endorsement of Coogi has helped them years after his rise and his death. As B.I.G.'s popularity grew, so did the clothing line. These customers have remained loyal and Biggie's image keeps them in the forefront.

The Notorious B.I.G. will be featured on the cover of Fader and he will be pictured in Coogi, as he is to the right. In recent years, Coogi has faced a slight dip in sales and this cover might be just the thing to boost sales.

Even if it does not, The Notorious B.I.G. did a lot for Coogi as a one man advertising campaign for the company without being paid, as far as the public knows.

When Carhartt was Hip Hop

In most rural areas, Carhartt is the attire most people considered "rednecks" choose to wear. Over the years, Carhartt has been stereotyped into being clothes for country white people. But, things were not always like this for the workman clothing line.

Long before the days of FUBU, Rocawear, and Sean John, rappers wore clothes that were already out. Carhartt was very popular among such groups as N.W.A. Dr. Dre, before he landed all of his endorsements, was frequently found wearing Carhartt. Even as he and Eazy-E traded disses, both of their camps wore the Carhartt products.

Because Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, and other rap stars were wearing Carhartt, their listening audience, the black community, also began wearing Carhartt. Soon, the trend found its way to New York City. Fat Joe emerged during the summer of 1993 with his first hit single, "Flow Joe." In the video and in promotional photos, Joe was shown wearing the Carhartt products. But, the style did not catch on and Fat Joe was soon wearing the products of FUBU and Coogi, among others.

Right now, the picture to the left is not thought of as much more than another pretty woman. But, Fo' Sho is one of the first outlets to let people know this is Brittany Monet. She has been doing modeling her entire life and she has expanded into doing videos, also.

Earlier this year, Brittany Monet had a co-starring role in the video for rising singer, Renaldo Price, "Dream Girl." Price has been making moves in the game and Brittany Monet had a major part in his first video. As industry insiders have checked out his video, they have checked out Brittany.

While the video was a great method of publicity for Brittany Monet, she is trying to do much more with her career. Not ruling videos out, Brittany Monet wants to expand her career into acting, more modeling gigs, and possibly executive roles. Having been in the entertainment business her entire life, she definitely has the skills to do anything she wants to in the entertainment industry.

Carmelo Anthony staring down another First Round Exit

Carmelo Anthony has been one of the NBA's best players over the last decade. When he was drafted by the Denver Nuggets, he took a perennial loser and turned them into playoff contenders. It did not take long before Denver was making annual trips to the playoffs.

However, the first four seasons in Denver ended the same way for Anthony and company. Regardless of their regular season performances, the Nuggets fell in the first round in five games. But, in 2008, Anthony and the Nuggets were swept by the Lakers.

The embarrassing sweep served as motivation for Carmelo and the team. Determined not to go down the way they did before, they played hard and earned the West's second seed. With this spot, they made it past the first round and to the Western Conference Finals, facing the Lakers again.

In the 2009 Western Conference Finals, Carmelo Anthony put together a spectactular performance, pushing the Los Angeles Lakers to six games before losing. The 2009 playoffs has been the only playoff run in which fans had a chance to see Carmelo Anthony past May. Last year, the Nuggets were on pace for another finish at the second spot before their coach, George Karl, took time off with cancer. Without Karl, Anthony found himself in a familiar position, losing in the first round.

This past year, Carmelo Anthony made it clear he was leaving Denver at the end of the season. Despite his announcement, Anthony played very well, keeping the Nuggets among the top of the standings. But, midseason, he was traded to the New York Knicks. Surprisingly, the Nuggets played better without Melo and the Knicks struggled, barely making the playoffs. In the playoffs, the Denver Nuggets are being manhandled by the Boston Celtics, currently down 3-0 to the Cs.

One more loss and Carmelo Anthony will find himself in a familiar position, losing in the first round of the playoffs.

Soulja Boy headed to Cash Money?

Ever since his Souljaboytellem.com album, Soulja Boy has released his albums through Interscope Records. Initially written off as a one hit wonder, Soulja Boy became the top priority with the entire Interscope team.

50 Cent was in the same position in 2003. While he complained about being backburned in favor of Soulja Boy, he supported the young star. The two have gone on to develop a very close friendship.

While Soulja Boy bonded with 50 Cent, he is looking to cut ties with Interscope Records. Soulja Boy has been in talks with Birdman to move his SOD label from Interscope to his forever-expanding Cash Money movement.

Can an Independent Hip Hop Clothing Line last?

Everyone has dreams of making it big in their own way. In the urban communities, many people dream of working in the hip hop industry. As things have expanded over the years, hip hop is no longer solely dedicated to rapping and singing. Any savvy businessman would find a way to find some sort of work within the hip hop industry.

Many urban youth who are artistic often dream of launching hip hop clothing lines. But, as reality sets in, these dreams usually die. However, there are several people who end up getting involved in these dreams and refuse to stop until the goal is reached. There are a few clothing lines that were submitted to Fo' Sho and we had to ask the question, can an independent clothing line last?

Of course, hip hop will forever be tied to Sean John and Rocawear, but can an outsider, within the urban community, launch a successful clothing line that can stand the test of time?

NGC Life

NGC Life was actually founded in 1998, but the launch has taken time. Trey Hollis, a Compton native, created the clothing line. But, as real life, a wife and children, set in, he had to take time off from his dream.

Initially, his clothing line was called Nutz Gear, but he rebranded in 2011. For years, he has been trying to launch. However, following extensive internet searches, he found Spreadshirt.com and he posted his designs.

Not only did he post the designs, he also teamed up with local movement, Kool Gang, and his products are selling moderately well online. While NGC Life is doing very well online, a time will come when people will have to see the physical products. When this time comes, will the company be able to deliver and will the product be accepted enough to launch into the big time?

Made Men Apparel

Made Men Apparel is the branchild of New Jersey native, Michael Gambino. He launched his clothing line in 2009. Following a year of hard work, he began to see the rewards of his labor.

Going on two years, Made Men Apparel has won over nearly 1,000 Facebook fans. Not only is the clothing line popular, but it is selling very well. One reason it has done so well is because of the Mafioso undertones.

Many rappers and hip hop fans are also intrigued by the myth that is organized crime and Made Men Apparel gives right into these thoughts. Because of this, Michael Gambino and his team have done very well in winning over new customers. While the appeal is broad, the question arises, ten years from now, will the clothing line have the staying power to remain a top seller?

Royal Gear Clothing

In the eyes of many, Royal Gear Clothing is a joke because the products have yet to see the light of day. During the summer of 2008, the clothing line was launched by a struggling filmmaker. A few shirts were printed before the clothing line went dormant.

Royal Gear resurfaced in 2010 with Lil Wayne-themed products. The products built a small following, but they never saw the light of day. A dispute ensued and Royal Gear was shelved again until late 2010.

Now, under new management, Royal Gear has several hip hop artists serving as the "faces" of the company. The shirts are designed by artist, Rudy Mardy, and the new owners are beginning to start several promotions for the new products in the next few months. Ever since January, the clothing line has been putting together a marketing campaign.

Several independent businessmen and companies have been working hard to launch clothing lines. Even the simplest of designs take a lot of time and hard work. More than the work, each product costs a significant amount of money. The average child has dreams of launching glamorous businesses like Diddy and Jay-Z, but when it is time to put in the work, they realize how hard it is. This, along with the uncertain economy, is why many of these upstart ventures never last.

But, is it possible one of the clothing lines mentioned above could end up prospering and competing with some of the establishment clothing lines?

A-Thug, rebuilding Harlem World

The hip hop business has changed over the years and rappers are using different methods for exposure. In Harlem, the Manhattan city has seen multiple rappers dominate the game. Nearly twenty years ago, Mase, of Bad Boy Records, was leading the game.

However, in the middle of his reign, he gave it all up. Mase moved away to Atlanta and became a pastor. Following Mase's run, Shyne was groomed to take over Bad Boy. Meanwhile, in Harlem, Cam'ron sought to become the top rapper in the city.

Over the years, Cam'ron has had his hits, but he has not been able to break through and truly take over the game. On the street level, Harlem is being led by A-Thug. At 26, he is the head of his own record label, Black Rolling Stones, and he has different ventures.

Many conservative adults try to keep their children away from hip hop, but for A-Thug it has provided a comfortable life. A-Thug is representing the same Harlem Mase did in 1998, but he is taking over the industry from the bottom up. Teaming up with local businesses and local clubs, A-Thug is putting together a movement, which will go unrivaled in the hip hop game.

Dwyane Wade reaches New Peak

The past few years have been tough on Dwyane Wade. But, this past season has been a great experience for the veteran. Wade went from being a great player on a horrible team to being one of three great players on a great team.

In his personal life, Wade's divorce from his wife went final. Early in the season, his ex-wife tried to sue for custody. Dwyane Wade has been dating actress, Gabrielle Union, for nearly two years. His ex-wife said they were too intimate around the children.

Right before the All-Star break, the case was won by Wade. He followed this win with a 35 point performance. Dwyane Wade is the captain of the Miami Heat, who are currently in the middle of a playoff run.

Playing the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round, Dwyane Wade is taking a back seat. Many have questioned why he has allowed LeBron James to have the spotlight. As the leader of the team, Dwyane Wade said all heads of major companies allow their employees to do most of the legwork. While Wade only scored 17 points in game one, he did score the game-winning points.

Personally and professionally, Dwyane Wade has been on top of his game this season.

Wiz Khalifa inspires New Clothing Line

Ever since breaking into the game, last fall, Wiz Khalifa has been one of the biggest names out there. His "Black & Yellow" anthem became the fight song for the Pittsburgh Steelers. But, Wiz Khalifa's overall lifestyle has inspired an entire clothing line.

Nutz Gear Clothing has been around for quite a few years. In 1998, the idea was first toyed with. But, the official launch did not come until 2010. In between 1998 and 2010, there were too many changes to count. It was the changes that hepled Nutz Gear.

The clothing line has taken full advantage of Wiz Khalifa's habit of smoking and hip hop. When Khalifa was still a small child, the people behind Nutz Gear were out doing what he raps about. It was a no-brainer to use some of his quotes to help build the clothing line.

In a matter of only months, Nutz Gear Clothing has grown in popularity and is selling around ten products a day. For the owners of the clothing line, it is light years away from still trying to get it off the ground. However, the owner is hoping for the days when he can barely keep the clothes without someone buying them.

Royal Gear releases "Royalty in Your Own Right" shirt

Royal Gear Clothing has been around for a little over two years, barely existing. Last summer, a test marketing campaign began and was a moderate success. Towards the end of last year, the real advertising campaign began.

Named "Royalty in Your Own Right," the independent clothing line has partnered with several artists. Among the first to join forces with Royal Gear were Dos Diligence and LoPro. They were joined by Raaddrr Van and Darius Bradley.

The "Royalty in Your Own Right" campaign hit a new peak when the first design was released. Designed by Rudy Mardy, the title shirt is already available for purchase on the Royal Gear site. A promotional video is said to be in the works.

Fabolous celebrates Rich Yung clothing line

Fabolous, like many other rappers, entered the clothing game a few years ago. Over the past five years, Rick Yung Society has done fairly well. Fab wears the clothing when he is out at social events and in a few of his videos.

Still, however, he wears other popular clothing brands, such as the long-running Rocawear and Sean John. Fabolous has been doing fairly well with Rich Yung, but he is hoping to reach the next level.

Recently, the Brooklyn rapper decided it was time for him to relaunch the clothing line. In celebration of the relaunch of the clothing line, Fab held a private dinner in Las Vegas. His longtime friend, Red Cafe` was in attendance.
