Raksha Bandhan 2020: One of the oldest festivals in India, Raksha Bandhan, also referred to as ‘Rakhi’ is a day that celebrates the bond and the love between a brother and a sister, or siblings in general. The words ‘raksha bandhan’ literally means the ‘the bond of safety and security’ that siblings promise each other, no matter the circumstances. While the dates vary each year, it is normally celebrated around this time of the year. This year, it falls on August 3, which is a Monday.

Hindus around the world believe that the festival has much historical and mythological significance. In Mahabharata, when Lord Krishna had cut his finger while using his divine discus, Draupadi had dressed up his wound using the loose end of her saree. Thus, he had promised to protect her always, and he had kept his word especially during her public humiliation in the Hastinapur royal court.

Over the years, the tradition has continued with sisters tying a ‘rakhi’ around the wrist of brothers, and them promising to protect them always. The rakhi band itself serves as a protection for the brothers. Nowadays, you can find many different rakhis — of different colours, varieties and designs.

National Doctors' Day in India is celebrated on July, in honour of the birth and death anniversary of the great physician Dr. bidhan Chandra Roy.

This day serves to show gratitude to all those who have selflessly aided us in our time of need and tirelessly worked for the health of their patients by commemorating the greatest representative of these ideals.

Doctor’s Day was established by the Government of India in 1991 to be recognised and celebrated on July 1 every year in India. Doctor’s Day is observed on different dates across the world. In the United States, the day is observed on March 30, in Cuba on December 3 and in Iran on August 23.

Each year National Doctor’s day is organised with a theme, last year’s being, “Zero tolerance to violence against doctors and clinical establishment”. This year’s theme is yet to be announced but we can assume it will be regarding the pandemic that we are undergoing. However, we must acknowledge and express our sincere gratitude to all the health care professionals for their tremendous work and sacrifices in this period of crisis.

Holi is a festival of colors which is celebrated every year by the Hindus across the world. It is a spring festival.

People from all walks of life, all age groups have been eagerly looking forward to this festival "HOLI". It is an Indian festival having significance of good over evil. It is celebrated on the Poornima (the full moon day ) which falls in the month of "Phalgun", according to the Hindu calendar. It generally falls between the end of february and the middle of March.
People gather together with family and friends and smudge each other with powder color or colored water.
They share sweets.

71st Republic Day

As we know, India became free from British rule on 15th August, 1947. But its constitution came into effect from 26th January 1950.

It clearly declared India as a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic (as strictly against monarchy or dictatorship of any single person/ king/ dictator). After all, it's rule of the people, by the people and for the people.

Hence, every year ,26th January is celebrated as the Republic Day of India, whereas Independence Day is celebrated on 15th August.
On Republic Day, flag hoisting ceremonies and parades by armed forces and school children are held in different parts of the country.

However, the grand parade is held at Rajpath, New Delhi, which showcases the country's rich cultural heritage and military prowess. This parade is presided over by the President of India, whereas, on the occasion
of Independence Day, it's the Prime Minister, who hoists the National Flag.
One of the main functions of Republic Day Parade is to pay tribute to the martyrs who have sacrificed their lives for the country and to confer bravery awards on military persons, citizens and children for showing tremendous courage in the face of adversity.
The parade begins with winners of gallantry awards saluting the President in open military jeeps, followed by the display of various tanks, missiles and other equipment added to the arsenal of the military. After this is the March-past of different regiments of the armed forces, police, Home Guards and National Cadet Corps. The President of India, being the Commander-in-chief of the Indian Armed Forces, takes the salute.

History:

In India, we all know that Children's Day is celebrated on November 14, which is the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. But prior to 1956, India celebrated Children's Day on November 20. As it's the date observed as Universal Children's Day by the United Nations.

The officially recognized date of Children's Day varies from country to country.

So after the death of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India started celebrating Children's Day, i.e. 'Bal Diwas' on his birth anniversary. Because, he was more popular among the children. They used to call him as "Chacha Nehru".

Significance:

Children's Day is celebrated to increase awareness of the rights, care and education of children. It is also important to look after the safety and security of children. They are the future of the nation.
Children's Day emphasizes on the importance of giving love, care, attention and affection to children.

Celebration:

Children's Day is celebrated with much enthusiasm and excitement. Different competitions are held, for example Fancy Dress, Recitation, Dance, Story Telling etc. And the winners are awarded prizes and certificates. Sweets are distributed to all children. KARTIK PURNIMA

According to Hindu calendar, it falls around one month after Sharad Purnima or (Kumar Purnima as itwell known in Odisha) and almost fifteen days after Deepavali. It is the fifteenth day of the bright fortnight of the Kartik month.

Kartik Purnima is a festival celebrated in different ways/styles/beliefs by the Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. There are different names for this also, such as Tripuri Purnima, Tripurari Purnima, Deva-Diwali or Deva-Deepavali, Guruparab or Guru Nanak Jayanti, as different communities celebrate this occasion according to their own beliefs, customs and traditions. But they all consider this day, the fifteenth lunar day of Kartik,very auspicious. In some parts of the country, the whole month of Kartik is considered to be the holiest month among all according to the Hindu calendar.

Jainism:According to Jains, Kartik Purnima is a very important religious day. They celebrate this day by visiting 'Palitana', a Jain pilgrimage centre. Thousands of Jain pilgrims flock to the foothills of Shatrunjaya hills of Palitana taluka on the day of Kartik Purnima to undertake the auspicious Shri Shatrunjay Teerth Yatra.

Sikhism:
According to Sikhism, there are no so called auspicious days. On the other hand , any day or month devoted towards pursuing divine entity is auspicious for them.
Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated with great fervor by Sikhs, as it is the birthday of the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Hinduism:
Among hindus also, there are different beliefs/thoughts regarding Kartik Purnima. According to some, it's the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon named Tripusara. That's why it's also called as Tripuri or Tripurari Purnima.
According to some, it's celebrated as Deva-Diwali or Deva-Deepavali, the festival of lights or the Diwali of Gods and Goddesses.

In Odisha, Kartik Purnima is known as Rasa Purnima(ରାସ ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା), 'boita bandana' 'ବୋଇତ ବନ୍ଦାଣ' or Danga bhasa(ଡଙ୍ଗା ଭସା). Boita bandana is one of the ancient festivals of the state. It reminds the maritime glory of Odisha. In the olden days "sadhaba puas"/sea traders used to sail off to distant islands like Java, Sumatra, Bali, Indonesia etc. for their trade by their huge boats (boita/danga). The women of the community were giving them a hearty send off on this auspicious day.
Now-a-days in the memory of those golden days, people still continue with the tradition, by floating small boats made out of cork, thermocol, decorated with colored papers They head toward the nearest water body very early in the morning for setting afloat miniature boats (ବୋଇତ), made from banana stems, coconut sticks, fabric, betel leaves and lit with deepak/lamps.

It's also called "Danga Bhasa" meaning floating the boat.

କାର୍ତ୍ତିକ ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା ଦିନଟିକୁ ଅନେକ ହିନ୍ଦୁ, ଶିଖ୍ ଓ ଜୈନ ଧର୍ମର ଲୋକମାନେ ଭିନ୍ନ ଭିନ୍ନ ଭାବରେ ପାଳନ କରନ୍ତି । ଓଡିଶାରେ ଏହି ପର୍ବଟି ରାସ ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା, ବୋଇତ ବନ୍ଦାଣ, ଓ ଡଙ୍ଗା ଭସା ନାମରେ ପରିଚିତ ଅଟେ ।

ଆମ ଓଡ଼ିଶା ବାସୀଙ୍କ ପାଇଁ ଏହି ପର୍ବ ପାଳନ ସହିତ ଜଡିତ ଥିବା କଳିଙ୍ଗର ଅତୀତ ଗୌରବମୟ ଦିନଗୁଡ଼ିକର ସ୍ମୃତି ଝଲସ ଉଠେ ।

ପ୍ରାଚୀନ କାଳରୁ ସାଧବ ପୁଅମାନେ ଦୂରସ୍ଥ ଦ୍ବୀପ ସମୂହ ଜାଭା, ସୁମାତ୍ରା, ବାଲି ଇତ୍ୟାଦି ବିଭିନ୍ନ ସ୍ଥାନକୁ ନୌବାଣିଜ୍ଯ ନିମନ୍ତେ ବୋଇତ ବସି ଯାଉଥିଲେ । ପବିତ୍ର କାର୍ତ୍ତିକ ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା ଦିନରେ ସ୍ତ୍ରୀ ଲୋକଙ୍କ ଦ୍ବାରା ଶୁଭ ମନାସି, ବୋଇତ ବନ୍ଦାଣ ପରେ, ସାନବଡ଼ ପୁଅମାନଙ୍କ ନୌବାଣିଜ୍ଯ ନିମନ୍ତେ ଯାତ୍ରା ଆରମ୍ଭ ହେଉଥିଲା ।

ଅତୀତର ସ୍ମୃତିକୁ ଆଖି ଆଗରେ ରଖି, ପ୍ରତି ବର୍ଷ ଓଡିଶାର ଲୋକମାନେ ଏହି ଅତିଥିରେ ବଡି ସକାଳୁ ଉଠି ନିତ୍ୟକର୍ମ ସାରି ସମସ୍ତଙ୍କ ପାଇଁ ଶୁଭ ମନାସି ଡଙ୍ଗା ଭସାଇ ଦିଅନ୍ତି ।

On the eve of Gurupurab, let me express my deep regards for the philosophy of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. As I came to know about his life history I got more influenced by his principles/beliefs, because I am also not in favour of the rituals associated/developed with different religions.

History:

Who was Guru Nanak????

Well, he's well known as the founder of Sikhism.
But, do you know? He was born to a Hindu family as a kshetriya in the village of Talwandi, on the Indian subcontinent in 1469. Guru Nanak is said to have strongly reacted against the Hindu thread ceremony at the age of ten and rejected it. But that didn't mean that he didn't believe in the existence of God. He traveled worldwide in quest of religion vs. God. According to ancient stories, he achieved his enlightenment at the age of thirty. He declared himself as neither Hindu nor Muslim, but simply a follower of the path to God. After this point of time, he was recognised/ described as a Guru (one who dispels or removes ignorance or darkness 'gu', and brings enlightenment or light. 'ru').
Guru Nanak encouraged both Hindus and Muslims to perceive the truth which existed within themselves to reach God without the aid of intermediaries such as the Brahmins and Qazis who laid emphasis on rituals and superstitions.
Guru Nanak was a social reformer who was against caste system and who strongly supported women upliftment. Soon a body of believers in his compositions, The Japji, the Sofar and the Arati and meditation grew into a strong community, even though, he never said he was God. It was twenty days before his death on September 22, 1539 he appointed a successor, Guru Angad, who consolidated the beginnings of the Sikh religion by collecting Guru Nanak's poems and hymns into what is now the holy book of the Sikhs, the 'Adi Granth'.

What, when and how?

Do you know, what is a 'deep'? It means a 'diya' or an earthen lamp.

'Deepavali' is the plural form of 'deep' or it refers to a collection of 'deeps'/'diyas'/earthen lamps.

On 'Amavasya' or no moon light, people of 'Ayodhya Nagari' celebrated the victory of Lord Ram over the demon king Ravana and welcomed Ram to their own city after 14 years' exile in the forest. People were so exited, that they lit lamps/diyas/deepavali (a collection of earthen lamps) and decorated them everywhere to remove darkness and spread light. There were no electricity at that time. So from this day onwards, 'Diwali' or 'Deepavali' is celebrated every year.

India is known for its tremendous festivals and their celebrations with great fervor. Time has now come for yet another festival, that is 'DIWALI' or 'DEEPAVALI'.

Unique celebration of 'Diwali':

As Dussehra, this festival, though celebrated all over India, also differs from state to state, or from place to place, according to their beliefs.
Some celebrate it as the marriage of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth with Lord Vishnu. Others celebrate it as the birthday of Lakshmi. But, most of the people believe Diwali as the festival of lights to commemorate the victory of Lord Ram over Ravana, and his return to Ayodhya along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman.

Somewhere, it's a five-day celebration.

Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti

As we all know, his full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who was born on 2nd October, 1869, at Porbandar, Gujarat. He was an Indian lawyer. After having completed, Bachelor of Laws, he was practicing law in South Africa. But he decided to come back to India, his motherland, that was in need of strong will power, support and leadership of many such figures like him to fight against the British rule. His role as an anti-colonial nationalist, and political leader, who employed non-violent resistance, to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British Rule. and inspire movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.

What is 'Navaratri'?

Literally,' nava' means number nine and 'ratri' means night. Thus, 'Navaratri ' signifies a festival, which is celebrated for a period of nine nights. In certain areas, people fast on these days to worship the nine different incarnations of Maa Durga. They believe in each particular color dress/saree as good to be worn on each day of this 'Navaratri' festival, such as the following:

What is 'Dussehra'?

'Dus' stands for the number ten. That means it's a ten day festival.

It starts from 'pratipada', according to the Hindu calendar, the first day of the 'sukla' fortnight of 'Aswin' month, to the tenth day, that is 'dasami' or popularly known as 'Vijaya dasami'. It has been named 'Vijaya Dasami' to signify the importance of (vijay meaning victory), victory of good over evil.

Because, on that day,Lord Ram defeated the demon king 'Ravana'.

Though, Dussehra is celebrated across India every year; but the customs and practices vary from state to state. In the eastern states, it marks the end of Durga Puja, whereas, in northern and western states, it marks the end of Ramleela.

Thus, every locality in the country has its own uniqueness in the celebrations.

A teacher is a friend, philosopher, and guide who holds our hand, opens our mind, and touches our heart. The contribution of a teacher cannot be ignored at all. In many countries across the world, teacher's day is a special day where teachers of schools, colleges, and universities are honored specially. The date varies from country to country. The universally accepted World Teacher's Day is 5th October. In India, the Teacher's Day is celebrated on 5th September and this tradition started from 1962. This is the date when Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born. He was a philosopher, scholar, teacher, and politician and his dedicated work towards education made his birthday an important day in the history of India. We remember the great work of this exemplary person on this day.

ଏହି ପର୍ଵଟି ମୁଖ୍ୟତ ପଶ୍ଚିମ ଓଡ଼ିଶାରେ ଖୁବ ହର୍ଷ ଓ ଉଲ୍ଲାସର ସହିତ ପ୍ରଚଳିତ ହେବା ଦେଖାଯାଏ। ସେ ଠାରେ ଥିବା ପ୍ରସିଦ୍ଧ ଠାକୁରାଣୀ, ମା ସମଲାଇ ହେଉଛନ୍ତି ଆରାଧ୍ୟ ଦେବତା ବା ଦେଵୀ। ଯେହେତୁ ଓଡ଼ିଶା ଏକ କୃଷି ପ୍ରଧାନ ରାଜ୍ୟ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଲୋକଙ୍କ ଅତ୍ୟାବଶ୍ୟକୀୟ ଖାଦ୍ୟ ସଶ୍ୟ ଅନ୍ନ ବା ଚାଉଳ ଅଟେ,ତେଣୁ ଯେତେବେଳେ ଫସଲକୁ ଅମଳ କରିବା ସମୟ ଆସେ, ପ୍ରଥମ ଅମଳ ମା' ସମଲେଶ୍ବରୀଙ୍କଠାରେ ଅର୍ପଣ କରାଯାଇଥାଏ। ଵହୁ ପୁରାତନ କାଳରୁ ଏହାର ପ୍ରଚଳନ, ଓଡିଆ ତିଥି ଅନୁଯାୟୀ, ଭାଦ୍ରବ ମାସ କୃଷ୍ଣ ପକ୍ଷ ପଞ୍ଚମୀ ଦିନ (ଗଣେଷ ଚତୁର୍ଥୀ ପର ଦିନ) ହୋଇ ଆସୁଅଛି । ବର୍ତ୍ତମାନ ଏହା କେବଳ ପଶ୍ଚିମ ଓଡ଼ିଶାରେ ସୀମିତ ନ ରହି ଅନେକ ଆଡକୁ ବ୍ୟାପିଲାଣି।
ଆମ ଭାରତ ବର୍ଷର ପ୍ରଧାନମନ୍ତ୍ରୀ ଶ୍ରୀ ନରେନ୍ଦ୍ର ମୋଦୀ ଟ୍ୱଈଟ କରି ଶୁଭେଚ୍ଛା ଜଣାଇଛନ୍ତି।

According to his tweet, "Nuakhai is one of the most ancient festivals of Odisha. May this auspicious occasion further the spirit of prosperity, especially among our hard working farmers." He also prayed for everyone's good health and well being.
NUAKHAI is observed to welcome the new rice of the season. According to the Odia calendar, it is observed on panchami tithi of the lunar fortnight of the month of 'Bhadraba'. Thus it falls on the day after 'Ganesh Chaturthi'.

Basically, NUAKHAI is an agricultural festival, mainly observed by people of western Odisha in India. It is also called the festival of harvest. Though it is a regional festival in western Odisha, but it is becoming more and more popular and is spreading its genuine concept/awareness worldwide. It emphasizes on the importance of harvesting crops and also the harvesters or the farmers.
Odisha, being an agricultural state and its staple food being rice, the HARVEST FESTIVAL is considered significant.

This year Ganesh Chaturthi falls on the 22nd of August. Specially in this period of COVID-19 pandemic, we should not indulge in large gatherings outside for Ganesh Puja.

Basically, it's a Hindu festival.
It's also known as Vinayak Chaturthi. Because, Vinayak is the other name for Ganesh.
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesh, who's considered by Hindus as God of wisdom and success. Lord Ganesha is the son of Shiva and Parvati.

He's also called Vighnaharta or Vignavinashak, meaning remover of all obstacles. Though the festival is celebrated all over India. But, specially, in the state of Maharashtra, it is fervently celebrated and with exceptional zeal. It can last up to ten days. People celebrate the birth of Lord Ganesh both as a private affair in houses as well as public affair in community places. Large pandals are erected and clay idols are installed inside. The clay idols are decorated with garlands and the whole area is decorated nicely. A Brahmin priest conducts all the rituals related to Puja. Slokas are chanted. People make offerings and perform worship.
Lord Ganesha is the God of good omen and his consent is mandatory for starting any thing new, whether in business or life.
He's considered as remover of all the problems and creator of happiness in the life of people. People in India always seek the blessings of Ganesha before starting any new work. He's the lovely God for all children. Children call him Chhota Ganesh or friend Ganesh,as He cares and loves children.
