6 ways to recover deleted post

Blogger has introduced Undelete this blog for you to easily recover deleted blogs. Unfortunately there isn't a "Undelete post" yet. So if you accidentally deleted a post, how can you try to recover (undelete) the deleted post? There are a few ways, some which which depends on good memory or clever guesswork.

Method 1: Using Blogger feed

Go to Feedly.com and type in the post address (url) into the search box and if you can find the feed, you can copy-paste into Blogger. For full recovery, your feed should be set to full, otherwise you will just get a partial recovery.

Method 2

This method is applicable if you are still working on the same computer where you had prepared the post (or had viewed the deleted post). Just press ctrl+H to open a sidebar listing the browser history. Go to the part where you were editing the post copy-paste from the cached copy of the displayed post into a new post or continue to edit or publish the post:

Alternative keyboard shortcut to call up the browser is shift+ctrl+H (shift+Cmd+H for MAC OS).

Method 3

This method is applicable if you have not closed the tab or window where you had been preparing the deleted post (or had viewed the deleted post). Just keep pressing the BACK button till you get back to the point where you were editing the post (or had viewed the post).

Method 4

Try to find a cached copy of the deleted post on the Web and restore the post from the cached copy. Type into Google search box

cache:address (URL) of the deleted post or some keywords from the deleted post to try to find cached copies on the net.

If the search throws up a result, click the link cached (see screen shot below) to open the cached webpage and either reconstruct a fresh post with the content from that cached webpage.

Another possibility is to try the Way Back Machine. For demonstration, I typed in the old pre-custom domain URL of this blog, namely http://blogger-tricks.blogspot.com into the Way Back Machine and this is what I obtained: archives of blogger-tricks.blogspot.com from Way Back Machine and below are the screen shots of the results:

and here is the screen shot of the October 8 2007 archive which showed no background color for the header and the old Google AdSense custom search box which if you compare with the current search box above, is different thus verifying that is is the actual archive of a page which now is non-existent on the Internet:

Once you have located a cached copy from the search engine, you can either copy the content and create a new post using the pasted content. However, the permalink (individual post URL) will be different from the original. If you don't want to recreate the post but want back the same permalink, then refer to Method 5: recover deleted post with original permalink.

Method 5

This is applicable even if you have no access to the computer where you had edited or viewed the deleted post, but you must have the URL (permalink) of the deleted post. If you don't have the URL, then you can try to guess the URL from the post title.

You will also need to know when the post was first published, or alternatively, can guess the date. This is because Blogger incorporates the date (year and month) when the post was first published.

Note also the URL ends with .html

For example, the title of this post is "Recover accidentally deleted post: How?". Now I haven't published the post yet, but I can guess that this post URL will be:

http://www.bloggertipsandtricks.com/2009/08/recover-accidentally-deleted-post-how.html

If you have or can guess the deleted post URL and you want to try to undelete the deleted post, you can try posting the post URL and your problem at Blogger Help Forum and hope to catch the attention of a Blogger Employee.

Method 6

If you have been backing up the blog regularly, try this. If you have the backup xml file, you can first create a new empty blog then using the xml file, restore the blog with the deleted post, then try to find the deleted post and using its content republish it back to the original blog. We sometimes get questions about how to get the web address/URL of a commentator in our blog. Blogger.com has not provided any way to do that. However, there is a way to guess, depending how high traffic, specific circimstances, sometimes quite accurately, the URL if you have www.statcounter.com installed for visitors statistics.

First, sign into www.statcounter.com and navigate to your project (blog). Then check RECENT CAME FROM

DATE | TIME | REFERRER | ENTRY PAGES

Just check for corresponding date and time of the comment and the relevant entry pages and under REFERRER you will see the URL

Blogger has been changing things around in the Settings. What used to be Templates they now call it Theme so if you are looking for Template in Blogger settings Templates, you will be asking where is Templates to change template, you will be highly disappointed.

Not only Tenplates. Blogger has also put the tab/link to DELETE BLOG. It used to be that to delete blog,

we sign into www.blogger.com > Dashboard > Settings > Basic > and the link/tab to delete blog is right at the top.

Now to delete blog, you have to
sign into www.blogger.com > Dashboard > Settings > Others and DELETE BLOG and DELETE BLOG is just like above, right at the top.

Signed into Blogger but cannot find blog? Solution

There are lots of bloggers complaining when they sign into www.blogger.com they
1. cannot find their blog
2. cannot edit
3. cannot publish new post, etc.

One likely cause is this very common confusion due to the gmail ADD ACCOUNT feature.

If you click your Google profile photo/avatar when you are signed into your gmail account, you will see a drop down which would have a tab ADD ACCOUNT
And if you click ADD ACCOUNT, you will open a new tab in the same browser which will allow to to sign into a new gmail account.

Note: Your Blogger account in this browser is associated with the first gmail account which you first sign in. If in this tab where you are signed into, say, gmail 2, the Blogger dashboard will not be associated with gmail 2 but gmail 1. So you may go complaining how come you cannot find your blog, cannot edit, cannot publish new post etc.

The solution is to open a new browser and use this browser to sign into that gmail account which is associate with the Blogger account you want to edit, publish post etc.

Make sure you are signed into the right account by hovering your mouse over your profile icon and make sure it is the account that is associated with the blogs you want to access

Below I append with the answer I often give when bloggers ask for help with similar questions in case your case is similar to what is being asked:

Would you happen to have more than one Blogger/Google/gmail and signed into the wrong one
Take note that although you can add accounts for gmails in multiple tabs with only 1 browser, you will only be logged into that Blogger account which belong to the first Google/Blogger/gmail account in the first tab.

Perhaps what I can suggest is if you have more than 1 Blogger/Google/gmail account, you use more than 1 browser, each browser for different Blogger account.

Here is what you should do in greater details.
Open more than 1 browsers
Make sure you are signed out of every gmail/Blogger/google accounts in every browsers with only 1 tab. Maybe even clear cache and cookies in each browser if you want.
Then sign in with different Blogger account in each browser separately www.blogger.com
To make sure, click on your profile avatar at the top of the browser and make sure you are really signed into different Blogger account
Check the dashboard to see what blogs belong to what email

Hyperlink: Internal link, link to another spot in the same post

Suppose you are writing a long post and you want to link from a particular spot A to another spot B in the same post/webpage. The way to do this is (you will have to use the HTML mode of the post editor):

At A, write the code <a href="#XXXXX">some words to describe spot B</a>

For example, I want to link this spot to a spot with title Chapter 1 below. Here I write Chapter 1 (<a href="#chapter1">Chapter 1</a>)
Try clicking the highlighted Chapter 1 above and see what happen.

The at B, if there is a title, write the code <h2 id="xxxxx">"Title describing spot B</h2>

For example, I want visitors to land at spot below when they click the Chapter 1 above on the spot below, I will then write below:

Chapter 1

You would have ended up here when you click the Chapter 1 at the top.

If you want to make a file in your Google Drive and only invited people can view, there is a way to do it.

1. Click the SHARE tab at the top right corner

2. After clicking SHARE, you will get a pop-up. Click the down arrow and choose CAN VIEW, then type in the email addresses of those people you allow to view

3. Click the tab DONE after you have type in the email addresses, and now if someone not invited try to open the file to view, he or she will see a YOU NEED PERMISSION message:

Step 1: Upload image to the web, eg, using the Blogger post editor
Step 2: Get the image url which if you use Blogger would be a long url
Step 3: Shorten the long image url using goo.gl to get a short url
Step 4: Go to www.blogger.com (Dashboard > Settings > Basic > Title: add this code

to the blog title, position as per your reference
Step 5: Click SAVE ARRANGEMENT.

Elaboration of the steps described above

Step 1. Upload the image, among possibilities, create a post using the HTML mode of the Blogger post editor. (this post can be saved as draft if you do not want it to be visible)

Step 2. In the post, look for a batch of code starting with <img src="http://......" /<. Type ctrl+F and search for src to quickly find the image address/url

Step 3. It is likely the http://.... will be a long web address/url. Shorten it using goo.gl.

Step 4. From Step 3. Copy from there the code <img src="http://......." /< into Notepad where the http://...... is a long web address/url

Step 5. In Step 4, replace the long http://..... web address/url with the shortened url from goo.gl (https://goo.gl/....)

Step 6. Log into www.blogger.com (Dashboard > Settings > Title

Step 7. Paste the code <img src="https://goo.gl/...." /< in front or behind the blog title depending on your preference.

Step 8. Save arrangement

How to install LinkWithin gadget to Blogger

LinkWithin has changed the way we install their Related posts widget to a Blogger.com blog. This is how you should do it. First, go to LinkWithin website. Copy-paste your blog address/url into the relevant field and select how many related posts you want to display (see screenshot below):

Then click GET WIDGET! Once you have done this, the LinkWithin gadget will be added to the list of gadgets for your Blogger.com blog.

After clicking GET WIDGET! a page will popup showing the LinkWithin gadget in your Dashboard:

Now click ADD WIDGET, and the LinkWithin widget will be added to the list of gadgets in your blog LAYOUT, probably in your sidebar.

How to add emoticons in Blogger

If you search for HTML codes for emoticons so that you can use those HTML codes in your Blogger posts, you may find various websites giving you the codes. However most codes would not work with Blogger such as
1. https://code.google.com/p/emoticony/wiki/Emoticons (looks promising as it is from google.com but didn't work out
2. http://character-code.com/emoticons-html-codes.php (some supposedly works with Safari browser but my Safari for Windows browser could not interpret, perhaps Safari for Mac may work but I don't know since I don't have a Mac computer.

The one I found:
3. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys-taunting.php
gives you HTML code to use with Blogger post editor in the HTML mode
but as tested at Testing emoticon codes for some reason didn't work with Blogger post editor rejecting it as
Your HTML cannot be accepted: Closing tag has no matching opening tag: A

The way around the above problem is to
Method 1:
Copy their emoticon URL then use the url in an img tag like
<img src="emoticon url" />

Drawback will be your emoticon will remain as long as that website remains online. If they remove that emoticon, your emoticon will become an empty box

Workaround. Copy-paste their emoticon URL into the browser address bar. This will display the emoticon on a webpage. Right-click on the emoticon, select SAVE IMAGE AS then safe in gif format in your computer.

Open Blogger post editor in HTML mode, click the UPLOAD PICTURE icon from the toolbar, select the newly saved .gif image, then upload and publish.

How to enable meta description for blog and posts

Meta description for both blog and post for Blogger is disabled by default. It is good for SEO as well as increasing the chance that people searching for something related to your blog or posts will click on the search results to get to your blog and posts.

With this default set, when you compose a post, you will not see an option to enter search description for a post and typically this screenshot would show the missing field for search description in the right sidebar of the post editor:

You will see a change when you enable meta description for your blog as shown below.

When you sign into www.blogger.com
Dashboard > Settings > Search preferences
you will see that meta tag for description for the blog is disabled:

Click EDIT, the tick ENABLE SEARCH DESCRIPTIONS? (.) Yes, then enter a suitable search decription for the blog then click SAVE

Now when you open the post editor to compose a post, you will notice a difference in the right sidebar. A new section for SEARCH DESCRIPTION will be added for you to enter a suitable search description for the post (see screenshot below):

Once you have an approved AdSense account, there are 2 ways to add AdSense ads in your blog

Method 1: Direct via Blogger Adsense gadget

Sign into www.blogger.com
Dashboard > Layout > Add a gadget > Add an AdSense gadget

Then in Layout, drag the newly added AdSense gadget to wherever you want and SAVE.

Method 2: Indirect via AdSense codes

Sign into google.com/adsense and click MY ADS at the top left, then +New ad unit, then select the ad unit you want.
After selecting the ad unit, at the bottom, click SAVE AND GET CODE

Now go to www.blogger.com
Dashboard > Layout > Add a gadget > HTML/Javascript gadget
Paste the AdSense code into the gadget
Drag the gadget to where you want and save.

How to change email address for Blogger login (New GUI)

Let's say, you want to change the email address for a blog from email A to email B. For this task, it is best to use 2 different browsers
Browser A for email A
Browser B for email B

First, in browser A sign into www.blogger.com using email A to get to the Dashboard of the blog
Dashboard > Settings > Basic
Scroll to the bottom to the PERMISSIONS section, type in email B then click INVITE AUTHORS

Second, in browser B, sign into email B and look for the invitation email, click on the link to accept invitation, then in BLOGGER, accept invitation.

Third, go back to browser A, to www.blogger.com
Dashboard > Settings > Basic
then in the PERMISSIONS section, you will see email B added as Author.
Click the down arrow and make email B as ADMIN

Now if you wish, you can go back to browser B
Dashboard > Settings > Basic
and in the PERMISSION section, make sure you have email B as admin, then if you wish, you can remove email A

Embed Youtube video direct via Share to Blogger tab

Test embedding direct from Youtube via Share > Blogger rather than copy-pasting into the post editor in the HTML mode This video was originally intended for a post in the Robotics for Children blog titled Command motor turn in 41 languages.

However, I noticed that the width of the Youtube video was automatically changed such that it slightly overlap to the right sidebar.

In the COMPOSE mode of Blogger post editor there is a video upload icon which you can click to upload video. However, we have found that to be messy and if you want videos in your blog, it is far better to upload them to Youtube then embed into your blog.

After you have successfully uploaded a video to Youtube.com, then below the video click SHARE > EMBED to get the embed code. The code will look something like this (you don't need to understand the code in order to use it):

Then if you want to embed the video into a blog post, then click the orange pencil icon to open the post editor. Note that you have to be in the HTML mode. Note also the width of the video above is 560px and this may be wider than your blog post column width. To change, click the SHOW MORE below, select CUSTOM SIZE

Click in width field and type a number suitable for your blog post column width then click in the HEIGHT field. The height will automatically be added such that the aspect ration is maintain so video wouldn't be distorted.

If you want to embed the video in the sidebar, go to Dashboard > Layout > Add a gadget > Add a HTML/Javascript gadget, paste the code into the field and save. Note: if you don't know the sidebar width, go to
Dashboard > Layout > Template Designer > Adjust width
and you can see the sidebar width there (also total width - sidebar width = blog post column width)

What is source code? What do they do?

Source codes are codes written to do something. There are many types of source code for various purposes. In the case of the Internet and if your are using a blogging platform like Blogger.com for your blog, the source codes are meant to be read and interpreted by browsers (Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.) and instruct them to display what the coder want the browser to display on your computer screen.

Below is an example of a small section of the source code used to display what you see now on your screen. Do you need to understand what all those "gibberish" means? Not exactly, it is meant for browsers and browsers are not human (coders/programmers are also "not human" but they need to understand how to write the source codes for the browsers)

Although you don't need to be an expert on source code, it will be good for you as a blogger to know a bit about HTML (which is one of the source codes for the Internet). For example, you want to put in your blog post a link for your visitors to click to take them to elsewhere such as to my Blogger for Dummies blog.

And if I want the link to open in a new tab/window, all I need to do is to add an attribute target="_blank" or target="new" like this

and paste their codes there.

We often come across bloggers just starting to create blogs, publish posts, etc, but are confused over the terminologies. Google/Blogger has created a good Guide for Beginners which should be a good starting guide to refer to. Whatever, I think it is a good idea to sort out the confusions over terminology. It will be a long winded explanation below but it may help if you refer to the examples (illustrations) below.

At any point in the explanations below and you want actual examples to deepen your understanding, refer to examples. Best if you are very new, just initially concentrate on publishing new posts then try to digest the rest of this business of blogging.

First the blog and its web address (URL). Each time you create a blog, it will have its own unique web address (URL). For more info about web address, refer to How to get blog or post URL (address), and a blog webpage (URL) may look something like myblog.blogspot.com. For example, the web address of this particular blog is www.bloggertipsandtricks.com and there is another example Robotics for Children below.

Whenever you publish a new post, the posts itself will have its own web address (permalink), something like myblog.blogspot.com/2015/03/my-blog-post.html. After you have created a blog, it will be listed in your Dashboard (what you see when you log into www.blogger.com). You can create more than one blog for each Blogger account and each blog will be listed in the Dashboard in a list of all your blogs.

After creating a blog, the next task will be to publish a post. This you do by clicking on the CREATE NEW POST pencil icon or if you are in a Dashboard of a specific blog, the plain NEW POST icon .

Clicking on them will open a post editor where you can type your text, upload photos, etc. When you have finished editing your new post, clicking the PUBLISH icon .

Once you click PUBLISH, Blogger will assign it its own web address (permalink, see explanation below):

This post will be displayed in 3 places,
1. its own web address (myblog.blogspot.com/2015/03/my-blog-post.html)
2. in the homepage myblog.blogspot.com together with other posts if you have created them (the default maximum number of individual posts displayed in the homepage is 7 but can be changed by you the author). Once the maximum is reached, publishing another new post will get this new post displayed at the top of the homepage while the oldest will be pushed off and will only be displayed in its own webpage (permalink) as well as in the archive.
3. in the archives as explained in (2). If you have added the Archive gadget in the sidebar, there will be listed all other published posts. In the current month, each post published in that month will be listed individually in the archive gadget together with other posts published in that month. Older posts in later months will not be listed individually but there will be listed individual months, and when you click on that month it will go to the webpage where all posts published in that month will be listed.

Then this is an example of a post: LEGO Wedo GUI (something that helps us talk with computer which has its own web address (permalink) http://robotics4children.blogspot.com/2015/01/wedo-program-screen-gui-graphic-user-interface.html and viewable on its own webpage (permalink), but as of today (4th March 2015), it is currently the latest post, so it sits at the top of the homepage Robotics for Children below which are other posts which you can see when you scroll down.

When new posts are published later, you will see a different post at the top of the homepage). However, if subsequently new posts had been published, it will then be pushed further down the homepage till it reaches the bottom. Any further new post published will push this post off the homepage but it is still viewable at its own web address http://robotics4children.blogspot.com/2015/01/wedo-program-screen-gui-graphic-user-interface.html and also in the archive for the month of March 2015 together with all other posts published in the same month.

Gathering posts of a category under a Page tab with Page gadget

You may want to gather all of your posts with a particular label (category) into a page and have a tab in a horizontal menu bar below the blog title for visitors to click on to get to that page. The way to do it is to first label your posts with various labels. You will need the links for the various labels (categories) so first go to LAYOUT and add a LABEL gadget to the sidebar. Click on VIEW BLOG to display your blog with the sidebar.

Then go to

Dashboard > Layout > Add a gadget > Add a Page gadget (Note: The HOME tab is automatically already added for you)

You will get a pop up window "Configure Page List". For a proper horizontal menu bar, I would suggest you delete the title "Pages". Then click ADD EXTERNAL LINK (see screenshot below):

In the new pop up window, to Add a New Page, Web Address, type in the title (name) of a particular label (cagetory) you want to add. Then go to your blog, right-click on the listed label (category) in the sidebar, select COPY LINK to copy the web address (url) into the clipboard, go back to the pop up window, right-click in the field for Web Address (URL) and paste.

Continue doing one by one for all the label (category) pages you want to add, then click SAVE.

How to get blog or post URL (address)

You may want to give something to your friends to enable them to come view your blog, or you may be asking for help at help forums and requested to give the blog or post URL (web address)

The URL or in layman's term, web address of a webpage is that string starting with http:// or https:// which you see at the top of a browser in what is referred to as the ADDRESS BAR (see screenshot below, URL underlined in red):

So to get the web address, just highlight it in the address bar, right-click and select copy to copy to the clipboard.

Other ways to get the blog or post address is to go to your blog Dashboard. For the blog address, right-click on the VIEW BLOG tab and select COPY LINK ADDRESS to copy to clipboard:

To get the post URL (address, also called permalink), if the list of all posts is not already displayed in the Dashboard, click POSTS in the left sidebar (you can also only list unpublished drafts by clicking DRAFT or only published posts by clicking PUBLISHED. See screenshot below):

When the list of posts get displayed, right-click on the VIEW tab of that posts and select COPY LINK to copy to clipboard (see screenshot below):

Create Table of Content with Link List gadget

I have a previous post on how to Easily make HTML sitemap/table of content using javascript. With this script, the TOC is automatically created and once set up, new posts will be added to the TOC without needing you to update manually. Unfortunately, that script created/hosted by Abu Farhan will cause malware warning and if nothing had change since, your blog may end up locked for hosting malware.

A Table of Content (TOC) listing all individual posts can also be MANUALLY created using the Blogger Link List gadget. Go to Layout > Add a gadget > Add a Link List gadget
(see pitfalls to avoid)

On clicking to add Link List, you will get a Configure Link List window:

So now all you need to do is to enter the New Site Name [which is the title of the post] and the New Site URL [which is the address/URL of the post. Do this one by one. I would suggest that you start with the oldest post first so that when you need to update the TOC with a new post, it can be easily added to the top of the Table of Content.

(IMPORTANT: http:// has already been added to New Site URL (underlined with red line below:). If your link already have the http:// in front, make sure to delete that http:// before you add your link, otherwise it would end up as htto://http:// and your link will be broken)

MAKE SURE EACH TIME A POST IS ADDED TO CLICK [ADD LINK] . When ADD LINK is clicked, you will see it listed as shown below:

Repeat the above till you have added all the posts that you want added to this "Table of Content" and REMEMBER TO SAVE when finished.

Now each time you publish a new post, you will then need to go to LAYOUT, edit the LINK LIST GADGET and add in the new post into your "Table of Content".

I have used this method to add a Table of Content for this Robotics for Children blog and for now you would see it at the top of the second right side bar.

Pitfalls to avoid

1. Remember not to have 2 http:// in your hyperlink, example http://http://mywebpage.com) which will become broken link.
2. After adding each post title and url, remember to click ADD LINK
3. Remember to click SAVE when you finish.

Enhanced Categories (Menu) to include individual post

The Blogger Labels gadget (Categories) only display the labels title/heading without listing the individual posts labeled with that label. Many are not happy with that. They wants the individual posts also listed under that label heading.

While that is not provided for by the Blogger Label gadget, it can be done using the HTML/Javascript gadget, but it has to be done manually.

Let us describe how it can be done using this blog (Robotics for Children) as an example:

There are 2 individual posts each (as of 13 December 2014) for these 2 labels - Sensors and Building from scratch.

Type the title of of the first category (Sensors) and bold it by clicking on b. Add this HTML line break tag <"br> at the end to start a new line.

Open those 2 label search pages (Sensors and Building from scratch) and note down the post titles and the permalinks (individual post URLs).

Thus in the (Sensors search page, these are the post titles and post permalinks:

In the title of the HTML/Javascript gadget, write it as Labels or Categories according to your preference.

Now for the first label/category which in our example is SENSORS. Type the text SENSORS and old it to make the category stands out. Add a HTML line break tag <br> to make the following text start on a new line.

Then in the box, list down the titles of the posts with that label. Highlight a post title and click on the hyperlink icon .

A pop up window will appear for you to enter the URL of that post (see screenshot below)

Just type or copy-paste the URL of the selected post into the URL field. Again type the line break code <br> at the end to start another new line.

Repeat for the second post (and ad infinitum).

Repeat the above for the second lable (category). The final result should look something like this:

How to add a picture to the post title or description

So you want a picture appended to your blog title and/or blog description. No sweat.

I have found that it is possible to put HTML tags in the post title which means that you just have to add a <img> tag

Sign into Blogger (Dashboard > Settings > Basic > At the top will be the boxes (fields) for typing in the blog title and blog description.

Thus if you want an image followed by the post title, you will then type into the field for the post title the following:

<img src="picture url" /> "put the post title here without the quotes" replacing "picture url" with the actual picture url and "post title" with the actual post title. Below a screenshot to illustrate:

Rearrange Blogger labels, share buttons, comments

Here is how easily to rearrange the position of Blogger's labels, share buttons and comments in the posts. Just go to the Dashboard, click the down arrow and select LAYOUT:

Then in the Blog posts section in the middle of LAYOUT, click EDIT and you will get a pop-up and at the bottom will be a REARRANGE ITEMS section. Hover your mouse cursor over any item and the cursor changes to a cross:

Just drag and drop the selected item to your desired location and click SAVE.

Solution to Youtube embed code problem

Something has gone wrong with sharing a video with an embed (iFrame) code. The embedded video doesn't play when the play button is clicked and also nothing happens when we try to click on the Youtube icon to take us to the Youtube website with the video.

The embed code is broken and now looks like this:

You will notice that the required http: is missing from the Youtube link. You can try to correct this by editing it to include the missing http:

But after publishing, the video will still not play. So what is the solution? Fortunately there is a simple solution - instead of adding http:, add https: instead so the embed code will now looks like this:
