The OSD blog has officially moved and we now have one website where you can keep up-to-date on the OSD Talk Show, the Internet video channels and all the other goodies that we're working on for 2011.

Remembering Jam Master Jay (RUN DMC)

I'll never forget the the time RUN DMC visited the US Virgin Islands. It was 1985, and Hip Hop, besides sports, was my focus.
I was enamored by the music that was pouring out of New York City, flowing as consistently as Niagra Falls.
RUN DMC has always been the group that epitomized the culture, the lifestyle and they set the fashion bar for many.
While Run and DMC did their thing on the microphone, my eyes were always glued on the disc jockey- Jam Master Jay (real name: Jason Mizell).
You see, Jam Master Jay had a way with working the "wheels of steel", the soon-to-be defunct Technics 1200s.
His scratches and cuts were always on cue, and even when one of them seemed out of synch, upon listening to the song a second time, it was then that I realized what Jay was intending.
To this day, I own a number of RUN DMC's albums, a few cassette tapes and the more common CDs and MP3s.
Today marks the 8-year anniversary of Jam Master Jay's (JMJ) murder.
I can remember it like it was yesterday when I heard the news: I was driving on the Long Island Expressway while listening to New York station, 97.1 FM.
To hear the news that the "silent one", as I had dubbed Jay, was killed in his recording studio in Queens was so disheartening that I had to pull over on the L.I.E. As Funk Master Flex reported the sad news........I cried.
I recall hearing, for the first time, songs "Sucker MCs", "Tougher Than Leather", "Rock Box" and "Walk This Way", and I always smiling, but it was "My Adidas" that spoke to my sole (pun intended).
I have always liked sneakers, and when Run DMC rapped about their love of the shell-toed sneakers, I immediately identified with the song.
When Run DMC rocked Madison Square Garden and told everyone to take off one of their Adidas sneakers and, "Hold them in the air!", I did and so did almost 15,000 other kids.
Little did I know the significance of that moment in sneaker history and how it would serve me in the future and today.
So, today I plan to listen to "Run DMCs Greatest Hits" and remember Jason Mizell a.k.a. Jam Master Jay and give thanks for the memories and him being a Hip Hop pioneer, and someone who motivated me to hear, listen and feel the music.
Walk GOOD JMJ, you're missed but not forgotten.

OSD x QAS 1st Annual Sneaker Design Contest Recap..

There's nothing like finding a way to tap into the future talents of any industry to see if it's future is in good hands. We, at OSD, take an active role in supporting talented kids who love sneakers wherever they may be. Thanks to design contests like FUTURE SOLE created by D'Wayne Edwards of Jordan Brand, we got inspired to get into the action.

About 6 months ago OSD teamed up with the Queen of All Saints Catholic School, in the Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn, for our own version of the Future Sole contest.

THE RULES

The requirements were for each student to write a 100 word essay telling what their favorite sneaker is, and what they would do if they had the opportunity to change it. The students also had to provide a sketch for their submission. That was well received by the students at the school from grades K through 8th grade. We're sure the prizes had a lot to do with it, because the 1st place winner (Jevaughn Williams an 8th grader at the time) got a $250 Gift Card to Foot Locker , and the 2nd place winner now 6th Grader Paloma Castillo received a fresh pair of Adidas (her favorite sneaker brand).

WE THANK THE PRINCIPAL MRS. THERESA ATTIANESE ,THE TEACHERS, AND ALL THE CHILDREN OF THE QUEEN OF ALL SAINTS CATHOLIC SCHOOL IN CLINTON HILL BROOKLYN.

We look forward to the 2nd annual design contest continuing the fun and positive vibes that the 1st one has produced. STUDENTS, GET READY!

Red Bull: King of the Rock (Alcatraz) Finals

This past July and August, Red Bull USA sponsored a 1-on-1 basketball tournament that pitted player against player, in a single elimination basketball game. The kicker was that the finalists would be playing to compete in the finals on The Rock, better known as Alcatraz.

While Alcatraz has been closed since 1963, the 22-acre former lighthouse island, has been featured in a number of television shows and movies; the 1996 smash The Rock, starred Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage.

Players from all over the world made their way to California to compete in the 1-on-1 tournament and were cheered on by Boston Celtics point guard, Rajon Rondo.

Beginning tomorrow night, on Comcast and Fox networks you can tune in to see the finals. (Check your local listings for availability.)

The Day Kicks Changed Forever: 25 years later...

September 15th, 1985 is day most of us sneaker lovers (who are old like me) have grown to appreciate long before today. See, we knew that something crazy was about to happen once time (a couple years) passed and people were able to reflect on exactly what those red and black kicks represented in the grand scheme of what would become a long line of kicks that goes on til this day. See I was personally into kicks a couple years before 1985, but with the summer wages I was earning the reflection of that love was based on Mom's cash (Thank You mom). So the shoe inventory varied based on my behavior at the time. But mom always wanted me to at least have standard issue kicks (meaning- kicks good enough to fit in and not be laughed at but still cool). In 1985 my mom and many other parents were now forced to pay attention to this talk of "Jordans". How much do they cost? Where do we get them? Why these colors? What's so good about this guy? Most fathers already knew the legend of MJ since the days at North Carolina, (right Patrick Chewing?) but the mothers were the ones who mostly went school shopping, not the dads. So as Nike was paying $5,000 per game for Michael to keep wearing the kicks, they knew that money would be coming back in from all across the country once folks could get the sneakers. Mike's playing abilities which Larry Bird once described as "God disguised as Michael Jordan" would only elevate the demand for the sneakers that David Stern (yes David Stern) said are not legal on the NBA hardwood on October 18th of the same year. He had no idea what his decision and Nike's reaction to it would spawn. But we sneaker lovers are thankful for his decision and Nike's reaction to it. Today marks the 25th Anniversary of the day the sneaker business changed forever. The same way Nike (and Mike) infected a world of kids from the US shores spreading outward around the world, now other companies are trying to do the reverse. Companies like Li-Ning and Peak are now starting to invade the US sneaker market. They want our kids!!!

With countless brands that have come and a lot that have gone away since that time, I thank Nike..I thank Mike (Jordan), Peter Moore, Sonny Vaccaro and all the innovators and risk takers at Nike and Jordan Brand for their dedication to continuing the legacy and creating a business model and strategy that has lasted the test of time. Love them or hate them..the shoes can't be denied. Mars Blackmon told us what it was back in 1987, did he not???

Nike / Jordan FUTURE SOLE 2010 RECAP

For the 2nd year in a row OSD has been personally involved in the Nike / Jordan brand Future Sole competition. If you've been in tune with the OSD movement then YOU KNOW we ride really seriously for this competition. Why? the future of sneakers depends on it. Last year's competition spawned one of the best sneaker releases (in my humble opinion) for 2010 so far in the Future Sole Melo M6 that released a few months ago. I'm very happy to be a part of it, and I'm very happy about the future of sneakers. That's how much I believe in the talent, passion, and support they received from their families and mentors. Salute to my homie DWayne Edwards as well!!!

OSD Talk Show: Ep. 143: 3-Year Anniversary Show

When the OSD Talk Show was created 3-years ago, little did I know that a simple, albeit more complicated than it sounds, Internet talk show, dedicated to the people that like sneakers ALOT, would motivate others to express their passion for wearing and talking about kicks!

Looking back now, I shouldn't have thought otherwise, but with the creation of magazines such as Sneaker Freaker, Sole Collector, Kicksclusive, Sneaker Marmalade and countless other publications that I'm not aware of, the footwear industry is always changing. As long as people have feet, there is going to be a need for shoes and, especially, sneakers!

In this episode, we discuss sneaker news such as Sonny Vaccaro returning to claim the summer basketball crown and his pending deal with Li Ning, along with Usain Bolt renewing his contract with Puma until 2013.

Also, we're joined by GLC of G.O.O.D. Music and listen as he talks kicks, his new distribution deal and what he and others are doing to stop youth violence in Chicago. Chuuch!

In today's fast paced yet disposable information age, 3 years can seem like 10 with the human attention span these days. In considering that, we at OSD know that it's a choice and a connection you have with us in the OSD Crew that keeps you coming back every Wednesday night for the live show, or downloading the podcast to the tune of over 300,000 PLUS as you dedicated sneaker addicted folks have done to date. For that, WE THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Dee Wells (OSD's Creator) and I (Paper Chasr) have made it our business to strive for taking sneaker culture to new levels of exposure as we continue with the goal to appreciate, educate, and elevate. Be it with OSD or OSD2 internet video networks, which have been viewed to the tune of over 2.2 MILLION minutes to date, or be it with sneaker culture's 1st official sketch comedy show JUST BLAME CHAD which will continue to blur the line between people who love sneakers and those who didn't know they love sneakers.

It's often said, "Who knew that leather and rubber could bring so many people together?" That statement has crossed the lips of so many people, from various walks of life and, certainly, various backgrounds.

The World Basketball Festival (WBF), the Nike sponsored event that took place in NYC August 10-15, featured a number of events for residents of the 5-Boroughs and anyone that ventured to the Big Apple to watch some basketball, witness one of Brooklyn's Finest (Jay-Z) perform at Radio City Music Hall, and venture "Uptown" to the famed Rucker Park where there were young and old Witnesses.

In this episode, the Crew discusses the WBF and, of course, sneaker news and the people that really like sneakers, kicks, sleds, dogs or whatever you call them.

We can agree on one fact......we ALL have OSD!

OSD Talk Show: Ep. 141 DJ Clark Kent (5-Boros Pack/ WBF & More)

The Nike Air Force 1 5-Boroughs Pack was released at Nike Sportswear, located at 21 Mercer Street, in New York City, on July 31. The sneakers, along with a block party DJed by Clark Kent, were the lead-up to the World Basketball Festival, which is taking place in New York City this month.

As with all OSD episodes, we talk sneakers and, more importantly, we talk to and hear from the people that like sneakers...ALOT!

A Supposedly Quiet Trip To The Brooklyn Museum (No Sneaker Talk Dad..Please!)

This past Saturday was one that I (Paper Chasr) and my son are normally in a basketball gym or shooting hoops at one of our local parks working on his game. After all 8 year olds with a wicked left jumper need to stay sharp, BUT.. today would be a break from the norm. It's 1st Saturday. So what is 1st Saturday? It's the day where MEGA retail super store TARGET sponsors FREE.99 entry into the Brooklyn Musuem the 1st Saturday of every month. Figuring my son would get a rest from the stern looks from the sidelines as well as my usual shop talk about SNEAKERS..DUH the museum would be a great place to find refuge RIGHT?

WRONG, it became obvious my son would not escape sneaker talk right from the very minute we touched the NYC subway platform headed to the museum. If you didn't get a chance to peep OSD's Episode # 140 then you didn't get to hear us praise sneaker company K-Swiss for their genius new marketing campaign to promote their new "TUBE" running sneakers using Kenny Powers of HBO's Eastbound and Down. The viral videos are truly insane and we love it. Well, K-Swiss has also rolled out a new wave of the promotion on the subways and buses of NYC with more craziness from Kenny "Mutha fucking" Powers.

Here's what we saw on the platform headed to the Museum

So...Now that my son is listening (if you call it that) to me explain why I was laughing to almost tears and pulling out my cell phone to take a picture of the poster, even at 8 years old he knows already...it aint over. Boy was he right! A stroll to the Museum Gift shop looking for a gift for one of his friends that has birthday coming up would seal this afternoon's fate...Guess what we happened to find the last copy of in the gift shop?

I've been looking for this coloring book ever since Sneaker Freaker Magazine hipped the sneaker world to it about 4 months ago. Truly a great find. I was most definitely a lot more excited about it than my son was. But he loved it once we got the book to the crib.

Houston, Texas - When the H-Town Sneaker Summit started over six years ago there were no ‘sneaker boutiques’ in Houston, TX, only mall stores and a couple of ‘mom and pops’. Little did they know over the next several years along with the growth of their bi-annual event, the H-Town Sneaker Summit community would witness the development of a burgeoning sneaker scene that would become recognized the world over. This included the edition of several highly regarded boutiques in the Southwest including; Premium Goods, and the addition of not one, but two House Of Hoops in Houston, as well as the new Nice Kicks Shop in nearby Austin. Throughout Reggie’s life he and his friends watched their dreams come true. Finally the shoes that they long hunted for by surfing the web or making cold calls were now close at hand. They also saw the release of several Houston and Texas themed shoes with two recent NBA All Star Games in Houston and Dallas respectively. Being a huge Air Force 1 Aficionado, Reggie also got the chance to meet two of his heroes through the recent H-Town Sneaker Summits who shared his same passion; DJ Clark Kent and Bobbito Garcia. To keep Reggie a part of the event that he helped promote and participated in for years, H-Town Sneaker Summit will be holding their very first silent auction in Reggie’s name to raise money for charity and help other kids watch their dreams come true. This very first auction will be for a special pair of shoes created specifically for one of Reggie’s favorite basketball players. This Sunday the H-Town Sneaker Summit will be holding a special silent auction for a pair of Yao Ming Player Exclusive ATR Elite Reebok Basketball Sneakers donated by the Houston Rockets. The Holloway family asks that all proceeds from this auction be donated to the Make A Wish Foundation Of The Texas Gulf Coast in Reggie’s name .

DunkxChange Boston 7/25/10

Boston played host to the DunkxChange on Sunday, July 25th and 'heads from throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island converged on The Fourth Wall Project in the Fenway-area, and the event also saw some cats that made the trek from New York City and the Nation's Capital.

The folks that made their way North to Boston were glad to leave behind the heat and humidity that has been slamming the East coast and even the cats from NYC were glad to be in Boston. Being with fellow sneaker lovers and not having to contend with 90-degree-plus weather was a welcomed reprieve.

The heat was on in Boston, but most of the heat was in the form of sneakers starting with Gary's Wu-Tang Clan Nike Dunk Highs. I caught more than a dozen folks staring, pointing and one dude got so amp'd, that he nearing dropped his shiny iPhone 4 as he was retrieving it from his pocket to snap a picture to show his friends what they were missing.

There were alot of people walking around with boxes of sneakers that they were looking to buy, sell or trade. SFK and I noticed that this time, there seemed to be more people that were attempting to sell worn sneakers. In one instance, we were standing outside to get some fresh air, we overheard a cat ask another dude if he'd sell him the Air Jordan 6 Olympic sneakers (released in 2008) that he was wearing. The Jordan 6 wearer said, "Let me think about it" and then continued to say to the potential buyer that he'd sell them to him for $90, to which SFK and I looked at each other, and we must have been thinking the same thing......we both must have made a screw-face at the same time that said, emphatically----GTFOOH! Homie wanted $90 for some beat, yellowed and severely scuffed Air Jordan 6s that I would say were BEAT and, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being near deadstock, I would've rated them a 4.

Well, suffice it to say that the Boston event was well attended, with over 100 people in attendance and it was held at a great location where people could walk around, catch up with folks they hadn't seen in awhile and show their sole passion.

On the Streets of Boston

Yesterday, the SFK (read: Size Fifteen King) and I decided to hit some of the Boston shops and kick it with the 'Heads of State in Beantown.

Well, wouldn't you know it, on our walk to X Squared, on Newbury Street, we spot this cat looking at a menu with his wife while wearing some Skechers Shape Ups. All of a sudden, SFK and I made eye contact, gave the prerequisite head nod and each reached for a camera or cellphone to take a few pictures.

It was if the world had slowed down and all of a sudden we were in the Matrix. Funny times for sure!
