The Library will be closed on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4 for the Independence Day weekend. Regular hours resume on Monday, July 6.

Reminder: the Library is closed on Sundays through Labor Day weekend.

Russian Folktales

Henry Savin, acclaimed storyteller, will be at the Library on Sunday, April 19 at 2 p.m. He promises to captivate the audience with legends and tales from his Russian heritage. The program is free and open to all ages. Refreshments will be served.

This program is part of the World of Words celebration sponsored by the Connecticut Center for the Book and celebrates Connecticut's roots and heritage while exploring our ethnic similarities and differences. During April we will celebrate the culture and literature of Russia in conjunction with the celebration of 50 years of Russian in the Glastonbury schools.

Kill-A-Watt

The Welles-Turner Memorial Library has three Kill-A-Watt devices available for users to borrow. These small devices can be connected to household appliances to assess how efficient these appliances are. A large LCD display counts consumption by Kilowatt hour, just like the utility companies. By using this device it is possible to calculate electrical expenses by the hour, day, week, month or even the entire year. Users can also monitor the quality of power by displaying Voltage, Line Frequency and Power Factor.

The devices are available at Lending Services and may be borrowed for three weeks. For more information contact Lending Services at 652-7719.

Friends Booksale

Book lovers throughout the area will want to highlight their calendars for the latest Friends of Welles-Turner Library used book sale in Glastonbury. It takes place on the lawn of the library at 2407 Main Street in Glastonbury, CT on September 6 from 9:00 am-5:00 pm.

The sale will put more than 1100 cartons of used books, videos, CD’s, and books-on-tape back in circulation at affordable prices. Unless otherwise marked, hardcovers are one dollar, most paperbacks are fifty cents and there is a specially priced selection of books at five dollars and above. There are over fifty-four categories to choose from. All proceeds directly benefit the library.

The Library circulates over 550,000 items annually. A circulation of this size can mean long lines at the Lending Desk-especially during summer reading. For added convenience we have two shelf check workstations: one located on the first floor across from the Lending Desk; the other is located on the second floor near the Reference Desk.

Checking out materials is easy-scan you library card barcode, scan the barcode on each item and take the slip from the receipt printer. If you need to renew items, pick up materials that are being held for you, or pay a fine you will still need to go to the Lending Desk. For further assistance, please ask a staff member.

Playaways are here!

The Library now has a small collection of Playaways. A Playaway is a pre-loaded digital audio book. All that the user needs to listen is a standard set of headphones. Titles in the collection include: Simple Genius by David Baldacci, Quilter's Homecoming by Jennifer Chiaverini, Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and Mayflower by Nathaniel Philbrick. Playaways ciruclate for 3 weeks.

Family Adventure Packs

The Connecticut Library Consortium (CLC) and the Connecticut Forest & Parks Association (CFPA) have received grant money from REI to provide themed packs to selected libraries in the greater Hartford area, including Welles-Turner.

Each pack contains outdoor gear provided by REI such as compasses, journals, first aid kits as well as other items suited to the theme of each pack. The packs also include trail books from CFPA.

For 3 months we have the Wildlife Watchers pack. Stop by and check it out for 2 days, enjoy the outdoors and share your experiences in the journal.

Friends Book Sale

The Friends of the Library book sale will be held on Saturday, May 17 from 9:00-5:00 p.m. In the event of rain, the sale will be held next door in the BankNorth parking garage. There are over fifty-four categories to choose from, including used books, videos, CD’s, and books-on-tape. Unless otherwise marked, hardcovers are one dollar, most paperbacks are fifty cents. Some books are specially priced selection at $5.00 and above.

All proceeds directly benefit the library.

The deadline for donations was May 8.
