2 things i learned

So I received a cookbook for Christmas, The Farm Chicks in the Kitchen. As I tried two of the recipes in the past two days, I have learned two little things...

1. toothpicks can be put in the oven while cooking.. who woulda thunk?! That was definitely a new thought to me! I learned this from the Brown Sugar Bacon Bites. Yum appetizer recipe!

And
2. a little pesto goes a long way! I also tried the Pesto Pasta Salad recipe. I tried to change it up a bit and adjust it to only make a couple servings.. It was.. ehh.. alright but I used too much pesto. I will try it again.

by the way.. i know this is a lousy post after an over 6+ months hiatus, but you have to start somewhere.. and this seemed like a quick little post.

Pumpkin Bars + Father's Day

I know it's not really the season for something pumpkin, but I made these as a fun treat for my hubby on Father's Day anyway. I thought he would like the surprise and he did! A friend of mine made these for our bible study dessert one week way back in the fall so I already knew the recipe was a winner. She got the recipe from Paula Deen. I did not make the icing. I wanted it to be more of a breakfast treat and thought the icing would make it a bit too sweet. It was delicious just like I remembered even without the icing and will definitely be used again come fall time.

Here is the recipe for Paula Deen's Pumpkin Bars:

Ingredients:
Bars:
4 eggs
1 2/3 granulated sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
15 ounce can pumpkin
2 cups sifted all purpose flour (I did not sift..)
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda

Icing:
8 ounce package cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Using an electric mixer at medium speed, combine the eggs, sugar, oil and pumpkin until light and fluffy.
Stir together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt and baking soda.
Add the dry ingredients to the pumpkin mixture and mix at low speed until thoroughly combined and the batter is smooth.
Spread the batter into a greased 13x10 in baking pan. Bake for 30 minutes.
Let cool completely before frosting.
Cut into bars.
To make the icing:
Combine the cream cheese and butter in a medium bowl with an electric mixer until smooth. Add the sugar and mix at low speed until combined. Stir in the vanilla and mix again.
Spread on cooled pumpkin bars.

I did not cut it into bars. We just cut as we ate them. :) It was yum and moist. I actually forgot to take a picture of it, but I did snap a few pictures of my little one helping me make something sweet for her daddy! :)

And then of the two of them on father's day. :)

Busted Lip

At first I did not realize she had busted her lip. She fell facing away from me. I thought maybe she hit her head a little, but it did not look like it hurt that bad. I thought, "oh tired girl, maybe a little shook up from the fall." I picked her up, calmed her down and then realized her lip was bleeding. Poor girl. She liked carrying around her ice. When she saw the blood on the wet paper towel, she called it "strawberries." Funny.

Naturally she also did a lot of this.. She is a snuggle girl. (phone picture)

'Weekend' Project

Here is what we worked on this weekend. :) It was really just a 2 afternoon project. We do not have the frames filled with our pictures yet, at least not all of them. But I am pretty proud of our work, so I wanted to go ahead and show it off.

This is something we have wanted to do for a while. We have collected these frames over the past year or so. While watching HGTV, I saw a tip about hanging multiple frames or artwork.

Here is the tip. (In my opinion, it worked beautifully.)

1. Lay paper on the ground, and arrange the frames/artwork on the paper like you want them.

2. Then make marks on the paper where you want the nails.

3. Tape the paper to the wall.

4. Hammer the nails through the paper.

5. Take the paper down, tearing around the nails.

6. Hang up the frames.

7. Voila! Step back and admire.

This may not be revolutionary for you, but it sure made my life easier today! This project still took a lot of measurements and time. It was a lot easier to make those measurements on the paper than trying to do that on the wall.

I used craft paper that is about the size of wrapping paper. I needed two strips of paper for the height of the arrangement of frames. I taped the two pieces together, and I used the bottom of the lower paper as the level part. Can you tell I am impressed with Ryan and myself?

Arizona!

I'm back.. hoping to be at least! I am pregnant and have had some seriously not fun nausea going on since JANUARY! ugh.. Anyway that is my excuse for taking a break from posting. So to this post. - We took a family trip out to Phoenix, AZ to see my in-laws at the beginning of April. It was a really fun trip. Adley is in love with her Grammy and Papa. She had a blast with them and so did we! We do not see them enough!

The first day we were there, we went to the Phoenix Zoo. It is a really nice zoo.

The last day we were there, we went on a scenic drive to Tortilla Flat. Tiny little town with population: 6.

DIY dollhouse bookcase

We have been looking for a bookcase for Adley's room for a while. My husband has been dying to get Adley's toys up off the floor. We will see how long that works out. A little over a week ago I came across this dollhouse bookcase plan and we decided we wanted to try our hand out in 'do it yourself' furniture. It took us a couple days to do it. We skipped the windows and doors because we do not have a tool to do that and we were already going to be buying a circular saw. Two things that would have made the project go faster: 1. a babysitter 2. a nailgun. But nonetheless, I feel it really came out great! By the way, this website has gobs of diy furniture project plans and they all look cool. I have about 10 picked out that are next in line for us! :)

Here are some--- actually a bunch of pictures of this project:

First we bought ourselves a circular saw, wood and some paint.

Printed out our plan.

I measured our cuts.

Ryan did the sawing.

Then we nailed it together.

Last: Paint and put in place. Notice the pile of toys on the ground.

She wasn't a fan of the saw.. at all! way too loud. I felt the same way.. So we went in for a snack during those times.

What we bought:
4 - 1x12s @ 8ft (bookcase shelves, roof and sides)
1 - 1x4s @ 6ft (bookcase footer)
1/4 in plywood (back of bookcase)
scrap of wood for practicing
2" nails
1 1/2 " nails
wood glue (we didn't really end up using this.. we only used this on the first couple of joints.)
wood putty
paint
sandpaper

What we cut:
2 - 1x12s @ 38 1/2" (top cut at 30 degrees) SIDES.
1 - 1x12 @ 17 1/2 " (top cut at 30 degrees) TOP SHELVE DIVIDER.
2 - 1x12s @ 27 1/2" (top cut at 30 degrees) ROOF.
3 - 1x12s @42" - SHELVES.
2 - 1x12s @ 12" - BOTTOM SHELVES DIVIDERS.
2 - 1x4s @ 11 1/2" - SIDE FOOTERS.
1 - 1x4 @45" - FRONT FOOTERS.
1/4" plywood - BACK OF BOOKCASE. Wait until the front is put together. Lay the bookcase down on the plywood. Trace and then cut.

Nailing Together:
1. We took two of the shelves (bottom 2) and nailed the shelve dividers (12" dividers) to each of them. Bottom shelve divider 13 1/2" from the left, second shelve 13 1/2" from the right. [2" nails]
2. Next nail the bottom two shelves together. Also nail on the top shelve. [2" nails]
3. Nail the sides on. Make sure the shelves are 12" apart. This should help keep them level. [2" nails]
4. Nail on the footer. [1 1/2" nails]
5. Next nail the top divider (17 1/2" divider) onto the top shelve. It should line up with the bottom shelve, so 13 1/2" from the left edge. [2" nails] [This step could be done when we nailed the other shelve dividers on. I think we just wanted to be able to play with it and the roof to make sure our cuts were accurate enough.]
6. Then nail on the roof. This was the hardest to make work, but play with it and use the wood putty to fill a small crack at the top if needed (like we did). [2" nails]
7. Now is the time to trace and cut the plywood. Then nail it onto the back on the bookcase. [1 1/2" nails]
8. Check and apply wood putty where needed. Sand and prep for paint.
9. Take a step back and proudly admire! :)

Christmas Morning plus Monkey Bread

MONKEY BREAD! warm gooey goodness!

I got this recipe from my momma who got it from a friend of hers. It is wonderful! I only made a half recipe for our Christmas morning since it was just us, and that would have been fine for 4 people. Do not do the math, you will be depressed at how many biscuits you can eat when they taste like this!

Monkey Bread

Ingredients:

4 cans (10 count) biscuits

1 cup cinnamon sugar

1 1/2 sticks of butter

1 1/2 cups of brown sugar

1 tablespoon cinnamon

Directions:

Grease a bundt pan. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Make some cinnamon sugar to your liking. Cut biscuits into fourths, and roll in cinnamon sugar. Place 1/2 biscuits into pan. Cook butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon in sauce pan. Pour 1/2 butter mixture over 1/2 biscuits in pan. Add remaining biscuits, pour remaining butter mixture over biscuits in pan. Bake 35-40 minutes.

**bundt pan is not required, any pan will do. I sometimes even use a casserole dish or the bundt and a casserole dish, it cooks a little more even that way. With a bundt pan, you might get some gooey biscuits in the middle.. especially if you use 4 cans. In case you are wondering.. 8 count biscuits do not work as well for this. They are thicker biscuits and the outside will look done but the inside will be gooey and some won't be cooked.

**Also if you only do a 1/2 recipe, you can put all the biscuits in the pan and pour the butter mixture over top. It makes it's way down through the biscuits no problem.

This makes a pretty yummy New Years' Day breakfast too!

Birthday Napkin Flowers

I am on a roll :) I found a tutorial for these flowers while browsing for party ideas. Here is the link to the tutorial on Made. This craft was super easy and fast. I did it the morning of the party. That is why I only have a couple pictures. Here is a quick run-down. (Check out the Made website for the real tutorial and lots of pretty pictures of her wallflowers.)

My supplies:

1. 3-ply napkins (big and small)

2. scissors

3. string

Each flower uses 4 napkins (3 larger and 1 smaller). I just opened the napkins that I had bought for the party and took out what I needed. Open the flowers up and lay them flat as shown. Go ahead and round the edges of the smaller napkin. (The larger ones can be done all at the same time after folding.)

The next step is to fold the napkins back and forth as shown. (This step is shown and described in detail on the other website.) Tie a string around the middle of the 'flower.' Now is the time to round the edges of the larger napkins. I don't have a picture of that either..

Then pull out the napkins to make the petals. They turn out pretty nice. I made several of them, orange and pink, to set around the room as extra decorations.

I also sewed the table topper that you see in the this picture. I don't have any pictures of the process, but I actually found the tutorial for them on the same website. I had not used my sewing machine yet, so I needed the tutorial, but it is really easy too. Dana-made-it is a great site!

M&M Kid Candy Jars

Okay, so this idea naturally came from the mason jar idea and seeing some of the empty baby food jars being stored in my cabinet. But I also found this cool way to cover jar lids from DesignSponge. This link takes you to the directions for this project. I am still going to show my step by step as well, just because I want to.

Obviously, I used baby food jars for this project which saved money because I just needed to save up Adley's baby food jars as she went through them. This did not take long. :)

Alright, so here are the supplies for this project:

1. Baby Food Jars

2. GooGone

3. Clorox

4. Scrapbook Paper (thinner paper may work better)

5. ModPodge

6. Ribbon

7. Pencil

8. Paintbrush

9. Scissors

10. Ruler

1. First step is to clean the baby food jars. I used GooGone to get the glue from the labels off the baby food jars. I then disinfected the jars with a little clorox. Some baby food jars hold the smell of the baby food. The clorox helps take care of this little problem. Make sure to do these steps in a well-ventilated area. Both of these products get VERY fume-y. You live, you learn.

2. After you have cleaned all of your jars and let them dry, the fun part begins. Trace the lid on the back of your scrapbook paper with your pencil. (The paper I used was double sided.) You can't see the pencil line in this picture but it is there. From your traced circle, measure a bigger circle (height of the lid + 1/4" for wrapping over). Cut around the bigger circle. Since all of my jar lids were the same size, I just used the first one to trace and cut out the rest. Once you have your circles cut out, mark every approximate 1/4" around your circle.

Then cut at every mark from edge to your mark for the smaller circle. I had already cut the slits in the picture above but thought you could see it better here.

3. Now gluing begins.. Put ModPodge in the smaller circle as shown below.

And affix the lid in place. I let it dry a little so it wasn't sliding all over the place while I was trying to glue the rest.

4. Begin gluing strips 2 or 3 at a time and move around the lid clockwise. Here is where the thinner paper may come into play. I had to hold the glued strips and press them firmly as I went around to make sure they adhered to the lid. I think thinner paper would fold and glue easier than some scrapbook paper.

Continue process all the way around the lid. I coated the paper to seal.

Then flipped it over and coated top with ModPodge as well. Let dry. Notice my crafty ruler drying rack.

After drying, fill jar with candy! :) Put the lid on and tie ribbon around the top of jar.

Note: Baby food jar lids don't go back on very easily anyway... so with the added paper they are hard to get back on tightly. It is doable but get ready for a tad bit of frustration.

Here is the cute finished product!

Candy Mason Jars

This is me at the start of my project. Well after collecting all of the necessary supplies. My supplies are 1. Variety of Scrapbook Paper 2. Cupcake and Circle Template (I made this in a word document and printed it out.) 3. Mason Jars 4. Ribbon 5. Mod Podge 6. Heart hole punch And a few other usual items: 7. Scissors 8. Paintbrush 9. pencil/pen

Oh wait one more, . 10. CHOCOLATE! Yes this is a necessary supply item for me. It helps me to mark the progress of my task. Work a little, eat a little.. I can find myself many an excuse to eat chocolate and this is just one of them. ;) hmm, maybe I should apply it to my blog posts.. then maybe I would post more often..

This is what the jar looks like close to the end of the project. There is this cupcake shop that opened up here recently when I was browsing around for ideas for birthday party favors. I got the idea to decorate a mason jar from their cute cupcake in a jar. I love mason jars :)

So first job is to cut out the circles. I measured the inside of the top of the mason jar, it was pretty close to 2 inches. On the computer, I printed out a couple of circles with sizes close to 2 inch diameter and then tried them out to see which fit.

I traced and cut out the circles.

I had to play with the size of the cupcake too, just based it on what it looked like on the circles.

Traced them on the back of the scrapbook paper and cut them all out and played with the colors, lining them up for easy gluing. I also punched out hearts and decided where to put them.

ModPodge the top of the jar. It gets pretty self-explanatory from there. I used Mod Podge between each layer and on top to seal it. I didn't take the first two pictures in succession so that is why the colors do not match up.

I let them dry and then tied ribbon around the lid of the jar. I also filled the jar with candy. These last few pictures also allow for a sneak peak into craft number 2!

Birthday Baby!

My baby is 1! We had a little party for her over a month ago! I know I am SO late posting these.. My excuses: 1. Family in town 2. Baby's first stomach bug... ewh! 3. two trips. 4. I'm lazy.

Here are some pictures from the day! :) Actually just pictures from Adley "eating" her cake, because that is really what first birthdays are all about, watching a baby dig into a yummy cake for the first time!

She had fun playing with her cake. Didn't really eat much of it, just smooched it around.

In the end, she pulled it into her lap!

Time is up! Really not sure how some ended up on that little foot..

Chicken Pot Pie

This may seem to be a nice post about chicken pot pie, but I have you fooled. There is a lesson to be learned in this story, possibly one you already know; but one I have learned the hard, tearful, stomach turning way. But we will get to that in a minute.. This happened quite a long time ago, in July actually. This is partly due to my being a slow post-er, but mostly because of the stomach turning part. Ok.. ok.. mostly because I am a slow post-er.

We never had chicken pot pie growing up. I guess I can't really claim that... I apparently have a bad childhood memory, my sister loves to recall things that I don't remember. So maybe we did, but basically I thought I didn’t like it.. Well someone brought a delicious one to us just after we had our little chicken.

And since then, I’ve been stuck on attempting to make a decent one. The times I have tried, they are very TASTY, but also very soupy. Anyway, so I have actually tried to document this each time I have tried, hoping it would be the time I get it right. So here are some pretty pictures of this particular time.

Some chicken, about 1 cup. (Cooked of course.) I cooked mine in a little coconut oil on a skillet and then chopped it up nicely.

Followed by 1/2 cup of onion..

Broccoli, not your traditional veggie for chicken pot pie. Broccoli is one of my husband’s favs, so there it is. I imagine you can put whatever veggies you want into a chicken pot pie, my choices were carrots, peas, corn, and broccoli. Pick a few, leave out what you don’t want and add more of what you do. Basically I used about 2 cups of veggies.

Then I heated the butter and onions.

I added the flour,

Got the pie crust ready..

Took a picture of all the pretty vegetables together.

Added milk, cream of chicken soup.. and stirred.

Then... dgbihfnsdhouhiahkjhjsf and this! That doesn't look like chicken pot pie. Sick feeling enter here:

I DROPPED MY CAMERA! And it is a NICE camera, one that I bought with money I had saved up from multiple birthdays/Christmases. So this is the lesson; expensive cameras have straps for a reason. Actually the strap is partly to blame. I went to grab the camera to snap another picture and the strap caught the edge of the counter! Bam, expensive camera somersaults and falls to the TILE floor. Nonetheless, I wasn't using the strap as it is intended. And it is there to prevent this type of event.

my new way to eat a cupcake

MMMMmmmm!!!

I made these Cookies n Cream Cupcakes thanks to Sarah for sharing the recipe on her blog! If you check hers out, they definitely look a lot prettier and more moist. I did not try hers, but I will say that mine were yummy! (very rich)

This is how it starts, by putting half an oreo in the bottom of the cupcake liner. Go ahead and preheat your oven to 350 degrees too.

Then you mix up all the other cupcake ingredients, ending with oreos pieces in the cupcake batter!

Tired baby girl!

Wants momma to pick her up and not just smile down at her and take pictures.

Okay, now that baby chick is in bed for her nap, back to the cupcakes. Stir up the batter with the oreo pieces.

Put the batter in the cupcake liners.

Cook the cupcakes for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool 5 minutes in pan and then cool them completely on a wire rack. Yes, this recipe makes 24 cupcakes.. but it can easily be halved for a smaller group.

Now for the icing! mmm! More oreo cookie crumbs! and LOTS of Powdered sugar! For some reason I cannot add enough powdered sugar to get it to the right consistency. I must let my butter and cream cheese get too soft before mixing it up.

So I had to put these cupcakes in the refrigerator.

Here is the recipe from Sarah's blog. I actually used coconut oil instead of butter.

Cupcake Ingredients:

24 Oreo halves, with cream filling attached

1/2 cup butter, softened

4-oz cream cheese, softened

2 cups sugar

4 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 (8-oz.) container sour cream

1/2 cup coarsely chopped Oreo cookies

Frosting Ingredients:

1/2 cup butter, softened

1 (3-oz.) package cream cheese, softened

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 (16-oz.) package powdered sugar

3 to 4 Tbsp. milk

2 Tbsp. Oreo cookie crumbs

Oreo Cookies cut in half for garnish, if desired

Instructions:

Cupcakes

Preheat Oven to 350.

Line cupcake pans with paper liners.

Place an Oreo half in each liner, cream side up.

Beat butter and cream cheese at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy. Beat in sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating until blended after each addition. Stir in vanilla.

Combine flour and next 3 ingredients. Gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture alternately with sour cream, beating until blended. Fold in chopped Oreos. Spoon batter into cupcake pans. Bake at 350° for 18 to 20 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in centers comes out clean. Cool in pans 5 minutes. Remove from pans to wire racks, and cool completely (about 30 minutes).

Frosting

While the cupcakes are cooling, beat butter, cream cheese and vanilla at medium speed in an electric mixer until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar alternately with 3 Tbsp. milk, beating at low speed until blended and smooth after each addition. If needed, beat in remaining 1 Tbsp. milk, 1 tsp. at a time, until desired consistency. Add cookie crumbs and beat on low until evenly dispersed. Once cupcakes are completely cooled, spread or pipe on the frosting. Garnish with oreo half if desired.

PUBLIX

So I went to a different Publix today than normal. I had to mail birthday presents for my nephews. I needed to get a couple bags to send for wrapping and there is a dollar store and pack and ship place next to this Publix.
So here is the real story.. As I was walking out with my groceries there was a news reporter walking towards me with a camera. He wanted to ask me a couple questions. I was actually terrified by this request but was too embarrassed to say no. I had not showered and looked pretty raunchy, but I was actually worried he would play one of my clips and I would look stupid. (As if I know anyone who watches local news.) He tells me what the story is all about. So he goes ahead with a couple questions, and I "answered" them. The story was some guys had been arrested at the Publix yesterday for using fraudulent gift cards. I guess my answers were not concerned enough because he didn't use my answers. :) It would have been funnier for this if he had used my answers, I could have posted a clip. We watched the news and turns out the reporter did not tell me the whole story. I might have been more of a concerned citizen if he had, but oh well. Still wasn't much concern for me with all the other things in the world that do!
Another funny part of the story is that right as the reporter was finished with me, Ryan walked up. It was totally unexpected. He saw me being interviewed across the parking lot. I did not know he was working in town today and I did not know he even had a store right by there. Quite a world wind of events. Adley just chilled in the grocery cart, so excited about seeing her daddy!
Okay, now time for cookies and ice cream!

growing like a weed

Adley is 9.5 months old. I took her to the doctor last week. She only had one shot and a prick on her toe. I thought for sure this would be the time she really fussed about it. Nope, she's tough, took it like a champ. Must not have been the stinging kind. She weighed 17 lbs. and is 27 inches long.
So she has been crawling for a while now and just learned a new trick in the past couple days. Ryan made her do a little squat "workout," and the next day she started pulling up on a couple things. And then yesterday morning, Ryan came in to this...

Actually she wasn't just standing there, she was reaching her very hardest for the nice ipod on her night stand.. Ryan said when she saw him she pulled her arm back real quick like she knew she wasn't supposed to be doing it. I think he just startled her.

If she looks like she is about to cry or stick that bottom lip out, she is. She wants to be in her daddy's arms so bad and she just doesn't understand why he left her in her crib to go get the camera! So cute!

All day today she has been pulling up everywhere. I can't leave her anywhere, not even a minute or two before she is pulling herself up on something scary. I even set her at my feet in the kitchen (because I needed to keep my eye on her while I was getting dinner ready) and she got herself standing by the cabinet. I don't know how, there is nothing to grab there. I'm going to have to see if she will try it again tomorrow.

She obviously is changing so fast and learning new things. I want to pull her out and make her start all over again.. means I'm ready for another one right???.. Hah!
