Review Sample Ballot to be an Informed Voter

Voters nationwide will soon head to the polls to cast their ballots in the 2026 election. The choice between Republicans and Democrats is relatively clear-cut. Most voters have already decided whether they favor a Blue Wave or prefer to maintain the status quo.

North Carolina is a battle ground state that will likely flip to blue this election cycle, as Democratic Senatorial Candidate Roy Cooper, faces off against Trump endorsed Michal Whatley, his Republican opponent. High voter turnout is expected in this hotly contested race and will likely draw voters highly motivated by the top of the ticket. But that doesn’t mean they will come to polls informed about other ballot issues. Many have not considered their votes in non-partisan elections or referenda and city and county bonds; issues that impact their daily lives.

In North Carolina’s Wake County there are several issues voters need to be prepared to address when they enter the voting booth. For instance, there are 3 amendments in this election cycle that many will not consider until they flip over the ballot and read them for the first time.

The constitutional amendments on the Wake County Ballot that may be confusing for the electorate. At first glance, the issues may appear clear cut. But a “yes vote” may miss some nuances that may not be readily identified by some voters. For instance, North Carolina already requires voter ID to participate in the election. According to BALLOTPEDIA, a search encyclopedia of American Politics:

“As of 2024, state law required individuals using mail-in absentee ballots to include a photocopy of identification. State law provided for an ID exception form if the voter could not present ID, providing a reason such as the ID being lost or stolen, lack of transportation, disability or illness, religious reasons, experiencing a natural disaster within 100 days before the election, and more. For mail voters unable to attach a photocopy, the voter's driver's license number or last four digits of social security number could be substituted.”

The Constitutional Amendment would require the photo ID of all voters. Simply providing a driver’s license number or the last four digits of the SSI would no longer be sufficient.

Opponents say this measure is designed to disenfranchise voters by mail; making it more difficult for students, older people and people with disabilities to vote by mail in North Carolina. Republican proponents insist it is a commonsense security measure.

Another ballot measure is a constitutional amendment to keep the State income tax rate from being raised higher than three and one-half percent (3.5%). This measure would permanently cap the rate at 3.5%, although North Carolina legislators passed a budget in July that already scheduled a drop from 3.99% to 3.49% effective 2027 -2029.

While this proposal may sound attractive to many voters, Democrats worry that the cap is unnecessary at this time and could limit the ability of the government to levy taxes, even when essential services are threatened without additional funding. Issues that might trigger the need for increased revenue include the need to fund government services to accommodate population growth.

Similarly, A constitutional amendment requiring limits on property tax increase by local governments could hamstring communities by a one-size-fits all solution. Rep. Maria Cervania, a Wake County Democrat and former County Commissioner says that “Bertie County is not Mecklenburg County,” and that it is dangerous to set limits that may stifle tax revenue growth for some local governments with differing needs.

While voters are focused on national issues, such as the makeup of Congress, and which party controls the state houses across America, local issues such as the state constitutional amendments and school bonds deserve just as intense a look as do these state-wide elections.

So, review your sample ballot. Examine the amendments and bonds and familiarize yourself with nonpartisan candidates on your ballot so you can make an informed decision about who will be governing your community. It is your community; make sure your choices are heard.

Will Trump Overturn Voters' Will in Midterm Elections

While voters seem acutely focused on rising food and fuel costs, equal attention should be paid to what may be America's best chance to change the country's direction: the 2026 midterm elections. Looking back to the 2020 election and the January 6th attack on the Capitol, it is clear that there are no limits Trump will not cross to maintain power. With only days to go before voters cast their ballots, the Trump administration seems focused on laying the groundwork to overturn the voters' will.

It is likely no coincidence that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is firing generals, a group of individuals who might oppose the illegal use of the military to alter the outcome of the election. The administration is also re-establishing its relationship with Elon Musk, who has been accused of tampering with previous elections to benefit Trump.

Local election officials who rejected the false claims that the 2020 election was stolen have already faced threats of being jailed by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullins. Further, the federal government has attempted to take control of elections from the states, which is patently illegal under the constitution.

ArtI.S4.C1.2.1 States and Elections Clause

Article I, Section 4, Clause 1:

The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing Senators.

It appears the administration, fearing a "Blue Wave," wants to seize control of ballots in order to control the narrative about who actually won the election. Many fear that false allegations about the election outcome may be promoted to stir unrest, or that state officials might refuse to certify election results, hampering the seating of duly elected officials.

American voters must make a clear-eyed assessment of the looming danger. Voters must actively pursue methods to maintain the integrity of our Democracy and the right of each citizen to cast a vote to determine who will lead our nation. The best chance to avoid the likelihood of a corrupt election is to vote in numbers that cannot be denied. Margins must be such that vote tampering, corrupt practices, and voter intimidation can be counterbalanced.

It really just comes down to your individual vote. You must be committed to vote, whether it is by mail, during early voting or in person on election day. You must be aware of the deadlines, and you must face all obstacles that may be placed in your path to hamper your efforts to vote. You must make sure you get to the polls and that your family members and friends get to the poll. Even if you are not enamored with your choices, you still need to make one.

Attend candidate forums. Follow the news. Talk to community thought leaders. Request a sample ballot so that you are familiar with the candidates and the issues that appear on your ballot. Check your registration status prior to going to the polls and make sure you have a valid photo ID. If you are challenged at the polls or don't have the appropriate ID, ask for a provisional ballot. If that doesn't work call the election protection hotline to get help.

When voting, make sure you read all the instructions carefully. Before submitting your ballot, double check that it is complete and correct. If mailing your ballot, make sure that the envelope is properly sealed and that any required witness signature is correct.

This may be the most consequential election in your lifetime. Don't sit this one out. Be informed. Be prepared.

Trump's Attack on the Free Press Threatens Democracy

According to PBS NewsHour, this week Donald Trump barred CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House. He accused the outlets of false, unfavorable, and anti-Republican coverage, but gave no enforcement details.

The Trump administration’s restrictions on press access raise a central democratic question: whether the government may limit journalists’ access in response to critical coverage. Retaliatory restrictions weaken First Amendment norms, reduce public access to independent reporting, and deepen distrust at a moment when voters need reliable information.

Among those reporters with whom Trump has clashed are Kaitlan Collins (CNN), who is known for asking uncomfortable follow-up questions; Jim Acosta (CNN) who refused to give up his microphone while asking about immigration; Kirsten Holmes (CNN) whom Trump accused of being fake news, calling her a "loud, boisterous person," and demanding that she "be quiet". Kelly O'Donnell (NBC News) stood up to Trump in the Oval Office and confronted him over his decision to ban competing news organizations from the executive branch complex. Numerous other news reporters and media outlets have come under attack from this administration for refusing to back down when asking the hard questions about Trump's policies. The administration currently is revoking press passes and denying West Wing access to any reporter representing CNN, MS NOW or Politico.

Although federal courts have consistently ruled against broad administrative efforts by the Trump administration to restrict press access he, nevertheless, warned other news outlets they might face similar restrictions. Critics say this action violates the First Amendment which allows individuals the right to express their thoughts and opinions without government censorship or punishment. The Amendment reads: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press..."

The dispute between news outlets and the Trump administration raises broader questions about the role of the free press in American politics. Constitutional protection of the press is rooted in the need to inform the public, scrutinize government, expose abuse, explain policy, and check political claims. It also seeks to facilitate the presentation of competing views and to highlight unfair treatment of U.S. citizens. The Trump administration appears to intend to muzzle all media who choose to report on the facts as they see them, rather than regurgitating the talking points of the administration.

While retaliation against media for criticism violates constitutional free speech norms Trump's efforts have resulted in a chilling effect on journalism and factual reporting by some U.S. news media outlets. Trump's attack on reporters and news outlets who refuse to report the administration's false narratives has already resulted in some media self-censoring in order not to antagonize him. Among those organizations is ABC and CBS/Paramount who admitted to self-censorship, legal settlements and programming shifts.

It appears that the United States has fallen in global rankings and lost its long-standing status as a "liberal democracy. This recent degrading of freedom of speech and of the press in the U.S. point to a severe and unusually rapid erosion of American democracy. In fact the Pew Research Center states that the Economist Intelligence Unit (the world leader in global business intelligence and market insights), classifies the country as a "flawed democracy." Experts say it is rare in modern history to see the pace of institutional decline currently being experienced in America.

The need to stop the decline of democracy is at the forefront of 2026 midterms. Americans have become acutely aware of the struggle this administration has with the truth. Pew Research states that 83% of Americans believe the U.S. government is suppressing important news from the public. However, they also distrust the news organizations and social media. This skepticism has resulted in a highly fractured political landscape where citizens struggle to find the truth in the various messages with which they are bombarded.

This is a particularly critical as voters wade through conflicting messages from this administration and news outlets to find the facts they need to vote their best interest in November. It is imperative that the media be free to research and report the facts as they see them, and then let the people decided what is the truth. That can't happen if this administration muzzles large portions of the free press, and only shares information with those who will positively promote the president's agenda.

Independent journalism supports democratic accountability. When reporting is limited to positive views of political actors, the media is weakened and reporting becomes a disservice to the American public. Limited access can favor official messaging, and sustained pressure may deter reporting and deepen distrust. The lack of fact-based reporting results in a misinformed public and leads to poor public policy making. It also leads to a lack of trust by other nations and world leaders.

Cautionary Tale: Check Your Voter Registration, NOW!

My granddaughter turned 18 in July, 2026. One of the first things we did was visit the Wake County Board of Elections to register her to vote. She excitedly waited for her Voter ID to show up in the mail. And it did, this week. However, the last name on the voter ID card was not her last name.

We immediately headed to the Board of Elections to straighten it out. The clerk indicated that her form had been filled out properly, with her CORRECT name, and said they would start an investigation to see what went wrong. We were assured that her name was correct in the database, and that she would experience no problems when voting in the upcoming election. I took little comfort from that, and plan to make sure that we vote on October 15th, so that if there is a problem, we have time to rectify it before November 3, 2026.

I don't know if this was a nefarious attempt to disenfranchise my grandchild, or whether it was simply a clerical error. I await feedback from the Board of Elections to determine how this error occurred. If it happened to her, it is possible that it happened to other eligible voters; who knows how many.

Regardless, if you don't want to just cast a vote, but for that vote to be counted you must remain vigilant during this election season. We know that one party in particular plans to make it as difficult as possible for some of us to vote.

No matter how many elections you've voted in, check to ensure you are still on the roll. Have a plan on how and when you will vote. Determine where your polling place is, and if you wish to vote early learn the various locations around your county where you can cast your vote. You can get all that information from your county board of elections.

This election is too important for us to allow clerical errors, or malicious tampering to deny even one eligible voter access to the ballot box. Register. Plan. Vote in this primary election.

Ensure Your Vote Counts on November 3, 2026

As the 2026 midterms approach, many Americans will tune in to the political battle immediately following the Labor Day holiday. Voting should be easy, but the fact is that we may have to struggle to cast our vote in 2026. However, we cannot be daunted or intimidated as we work to ensure that our voices are heard.

The Trump administration has gone to great lengths to try to make the process as confusing as possible, eliminating voting locations, decreasing ballot drop-off sites, gerrymandering voting districts and attacking the mail-in ballot process. The goal is to inject confusion into the process in the hope that many voters, particularly minority voters, will be frustrated enough not to participate in the election.

That tactic, however, will not prevail if voters are proactive in their preparation for the November 3^rd election. Every voter should have a plan on how they will ensure that their vote is both cast and counted.

In North Carolina, a key state in this year’s midterm, election boards across the state will begin to mail out absentee ballots on September 4 to voters who requested them. In-person early voting runs from October 15 through October 31. Voters will cast their ballots at their designated precinct on election day, Tuesday, November 3, 2026. All those options are open to every North Carolinian. Each of us should assume the responsibility of making sure we are prepared to cast our vote in a way that cannot be challenged.

Each voter should contact their county board of elections to ensure that their name is still listed as active. Reasons you may be suspended or purged from the roll is if you have moved since the last election. You also might fall into this category if your name has changed since you last voted. This is particularly important for women who may have changed their name due to marriage or divorce. If your name has been suspended or purged for any reason, you can submit an updated voter registration form through the DMV website or your county registrar.

Another tactic by the Trump administration is to eliminate or change voting locations. You may have voted at the same location for years and find that that location is no longer a voting site. So, make sure when you check your registration that you also check your voting location. If you do end up at the wrong site on November 3, let the official know that you are not in your precinct and want to vote using a provisional ballot. The best way to ensure that your vote is cast and counted is to have a plan:

Know when and where you are going to vote.
Know where the ballot drop-off locations are.
Know where the early voting locations are.
Plan your transportation to the voting location.
If you are going to mail in a ballot, do so in a timely fashion to ensure that it will arrive in time to be counted.

This may be the most consequential election of your lifetime. Make sure you are prepared. Make sure you are involved. Make sure your vote counts on November 3, 2026.

Gary Indiana Becomes Trump's Katrina

BUT THE MEDIA DOESN'T CARE

Gary Indiana, a predominantly Black community where roughly a third of residents live below the poverty line, is struggling back from an unprecedented storm on August 11 that left many without power or resources. The storm is reminiscent of Katrina in New Orleans in 2005 where a lackluster federal response left thousands of New Orleanians struggling to survive. While Gary residents don't have to contend with the prolonged flooding experienced by New Orleans residents, the lack of access to life's necessities post-disaster are similar.

Unfortunately, the vivid pictures of flooding that dominated the airwaves during the Katrina disaster have not occurred during the Gary, Indiana storm. Apparently, downed trees and damaged power lines are not as gripping or captivating for the media, as the heart-wrenching photos that came out of New Orleans. But the pain of the Indiana residents is just as real.

The August 11 storms brought winds up to 99 mph to Northwest Indiana, downing trees and power lines and initially leaving more than half of Gary without electricity. Some residents entered a third week without power, creating the urgent need for food, laundry, showers, phone charging, and other basic services.

NIPSCO, one of Indiana's largest natural gas and electric companies, says it has experienced about 374,500 customer outages since Aug. 11. The prolonged power outage affected more than 38,300 homes and businesses in Gary and government response has been slow. Power restoration for remaining customers was expected by midnight on August 25, 2026.

The lengthy restoration has fueled questions about NIPSCO's response and the resilience of Gary's power grid, especially as neighboring communities recovered. While Gary struggled, residents in nearby Indiana received a better response rate to the disaster. ComEd restored nearly all customers across the state line within days.

As of Monday morning, about 3,878 customers remained without power because of the storms. While Gary has received federal help through FEMA's emergency declaration, direct assistance to residents; food, supplies, cooling and other necessities is largely coming from charities and local and state efforts. The August 15 emergency declaration allows FEMA to support state and local emergency protective measures, but it does not automatically provide individual assistance directly to households.

Gary Mayor Eddie Melton met with U.S. Senator Jim Banks to discuss federal disaster assistance and recovery needs. Melton also spoke with President Trump and urged swift federal action for Gary residents and neighborhoods.

While the disparity in restoration of services is troublesome, Gary apparently experienced more severe weather than Indiana. The National Weather Service says the storm intensified as it moved into Northwest Indiana, with a 99-mph gust recorded at Gary/Chicago International Airport, a speed that falls within the range of Category 2 hurricane winds.

Gary residents have called out state leaders, including Gov. Mike Braun, who said over the weekend that it was unacceptable that NIPSCO was taking so long to restore power while Illinois communities across the border had already been restored.

This is bigger than a power outage in Gary, Indiana," Bernice King, civil rights organizer and daughter of Martin Luther King Jr, said on social media. "It is part of a pattern. Black communities have too often been expected to endure conditions that would be treated as intolerable somewhere else."

Nonprofits, businesses, volunteers, and public figures have stepped up to fill the void, providing meals, supplies, funding, and other aid to affected residents. Raydia Martin, assistant director of the Flourish Community Hub at Flourish Church in Gary, said volunteers and community groups have been an important part of the response. The Chicago Bears announced a $200,000 storm relief donation, split evenly between Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago and Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Gary. World Central Kitchen distributed about 4,000 meals in Gary and nearby Lake Ridge with help from local volunteers.

As the city struggles to get back on its feet, the nation should examine partisan politics in federal services. On August 20, Indiana submitted a major disaster request seeking additional individual and public assistance, including possible FEMA support for households affected by this disaster. Gov. Mike Braun petitioned the federal government for assistance in 54 counties after the severe storm decimated the state's power system. President Trump approved the request for 21 counties, less than half that number.

Eligible residents in the designated counties can apply for grants of up to $5,000 to help cover immediate needs such as clothing and uninsured medical devices. Those affected should document damages and expenses and follow updates from the Indiana Department of Residents to find more information through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.

Recovery and Cleanup

· The American Red Cross offers disaster recovery resources on shelter, cleanup, and flood recovery. Call 1-800-733-2767 for assistance. Keep photos and videos of storm damage and save receipts for repairs, temporary housing, replacement items, and other disaster-related expenses. Residents who were affected should continue saving documentation, monitoring official updates, and using available state and nonprofit recovery resources as they await further federal assistance.

Low Global Approval of Trump, and Yet...

Public opinion on Donald Trump's standing on the world stage is dismissal. A multinational Pew Research Center report indicates that only 23% of adults across 36 countries worldwide express confidence in Trump to make good policy decisions on world affairs. His "America First" policies have strained relations with established Western allies, resulting in what appears to be an "America Alone" reality.

While diplomatic tensions are high and traditional partnerships are strained, there seems to be inadequate pushback both domestically and internationally to curb this out-of-control despot as he wrecks havoc on the social and political stage both here and around the world.

Some of his most unconventional and disruptive policies include threatening sweeping tariffs on our closest allies like Canada and Mexico, threatening to annex Greenland and Canada, declaring international waterways as under U.S. control, undermining NATO and pulling the U.S. from multilateral pacts such as the Paris Climate Agreement. He also has suggested that the U.S. should control the Strait of Hormuz and charge for use of the vital shipping lane. He radically cut or froze international development funding, including global health initiatives.

He has used the influence and might of the most powerful nation on this planet to play petty games, and one-up world leaders. His policies have denied food to starving people in Ethiopia while food rots in African harbours. He has disrupted the flow of lifesaving malaria prevention efforts and HIV/AIDS drug programs. He has rolled back the clock on climate change, erasing the positive strides of the Biden administration in the Paris Agreement on climate change.

His positions on Ukraine, Gaza and Panama are haphazard. They are based on whim, rather than actual facts, planning and expertise. All of these policies have negatively impacted the world economy and threatened social stability worldwide.

Nevertheless, world leaders still bow at his feet, strategizing about how to interact without triggering him. It is unbelievable to me that the entire WORLD seems to allow this toddler to throw tantrums as the world order devolves into a quagmire of his creation.

Who will stop him? Clearly the American voter has not, up to this point, been able to do so. Perhaps November will show us a different America. Perhaps, in November, voters will stop looking for the PERFECT solution and pursue an ACHIEVABLE solution. Perhaps in November America will give the world something new to work with...a way to repair the damage inflicted by this toddler-king who still has not made it out of his diaper.

Trump Accounts Closed Due To Money-Laundering Probe

Capital One Bank closed roughly 385 accounts linked to President Donald Trump and the Trump Organization in 2021 after identifying characteristics associated with potential money-laundering risk under its Anti-Money Laundering (AML) policies.

Trump went to court, alleging that Capital One unlawfully denied the organization financial services for political reasons following the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. The Trump Organization accused the bank of political discrimination, arguing that the decision reflected the shifting political climate after the attack.

A motion filed by Capital One in a Florida federal court refutes that claim, stating that the decision followed several months of internal review by its Financial Crimes Compliance Team. The court filing over this past weekend requested that the lawsuit be dismissed, stating that “The closures were the result of months of analysis and careful review by Capital One’s AML team in accordance with bank policies and regulatory guidance.”

According to Capital One, AML is an internal financial crimes and risk-compliance unit that investigates suspicious transactions, screens customer accounts against global watchlists, and ensures adherence to federal bank regulations. AML cited patterns in the flagged Trump accounts that were consistent with those identified through federal banking guidance as suspect.

It is reported that Capital One had been fined $390 million by federal regulators just months before closing Trump’s accounts, due to lax anti-money laundering practices, which caused a heightened internal scrutiny of compliance issues. While Capital One did not actually accuse the Trump organization of illegal money laundering, it states that the accounts were closed based upon standard regulatory practices. The bank says that it never publicly disclosed why the accounts were closed and that the organization was given several months to move funds elsewhere.

It will be left up to the court to decided whether the "debanking" of Trumps accounts is anti-money laundering enforcement as stated by the bank, or is political discrimination. This litigation does, however, open the possibility that sensitive financial information related to the Trump accounts may become a matter of public record; an occurrence likely not considered by the Trump organization when bringing this suit.

Supreme Court Campaign Finance Decision: Selling Democracy

In a 6-3 decision issued on June 30, 2026, the Supreme Court struck down limits on how much political parties may spend in coordination with candidates. The ruling allows wealthy donors to channel far larger sums through political parties, giving them greater power to shape campaign messaging and election outcomes.

The Court held that post-Watergate limits on coordinated spending between political parties and candidates violate the First Amendment. With those limits removed, parties and outside political groups can play a larger role in financing campaign advertisements and related expenses.

Individual contributions directly to candidates may still be limited, such as $7,000 per election.
Wealthy donors can give much larger amounts to national political parties, which can then direct spending to support particular candidates.
Super PACs may spend unlimited amounts on political messaging, including television ads, so long as they do not coordinate directly with a candidate’s official campaign.

Supporters argue that campaign spending is a form of political speech protected by the First Amendment. Critics counter that the ruling increases the risk of corruption by giving wealthy donors and special interest groups outsized influence over elections. In effect, they argue, the decision makes political power more available to those who can afford to spend the most.

Grassroots candidates can still build support through many small-dollar donations, but that model may struggle to compete with unlimited spending from corporations and wealthy donors. As more money flows into television, print, and social media advertising, small-dollar donors and ordinary voters may find their voices increasingly drowned out.

Put simply, these rulings give the wealthiest participants the loudest megaphone. Those with the most money will have the greatest ability to shape public messaging, influence opinion, and impact voting outcomes.

Many elected officials already respond to high-dollar donors by supporting legislation that aligns with donor priorities. As Super PACs, political parties, and wealthy contributors spend more aggressively, this influence is likely to grow. In practical terms, the decision moves American democratic rule further toward a system where political power is increasingly shaped by those able to spend the most, and that is not democracy.

I will not celebrate America's 250th Anniversary on July 4th 2026. It should be a joyous occasion where we all look back on how far we have come, and all the many wonderful accomplishments that made this country a leader among nations. Those accomplishments are real...documented...impressive. Generally, in a blog such as this, I would list them...laud them. But not today. Today I flipped through my facebook pages and found evil, despicable stories and comments that overshadow all the good that this country has brought forth, because it has been equally efficient in birthing violence, hate, injustice and racism.

On Sunday night, the president of these United States hosted a taxpayer funded UFC fight...that's right, a cage fight, supposedly to honor our 250th anniversary and his 80th birthday. This uncouth display had all the trappings of a trailer park brawl with no dignity and no mention of this country's storied history which it supposedly was celebrating. Instead UFC fighter Josh Hokit took the opportunity to slander former first lady Michelle Obama during a post-fight speech.

I won't repeat the offense, but you all know it. According to CNN journalist Alejandra Jaramillo, Trump, who was seated on the front row, "appeared to show a half-smile seconds after the false remark." Apparently there was a mixture of cheers and boos from the crowd. The fact that there were enough attendants who audibly cheered such mean-spirited behavior made me ashamed of the Republican crowd who supported this event. But what triggered me today is the number of Americans from across the country who support and display that same behavior and are willing to put it in writing on Facebook.

While Michelle Obama did not go low...apparently, she plans to go to court. It is my hope that she is successful in stripping Hokit of his earnings from his despicable performance in that cage that you and I payed for.

But that wasn't all. On that same day, a Mississippi police officer took the life of a 1-year-old over the alleged theft of a box of pampers. Yes, you read that right. Little Kohen Wiley was shot and killed by Senatobia Mississippi police officers called to the local Walmart for his parent allegedly stealing a box of pampers. The police claimed they shot into the vehicle in a public parking lot because the driver tried to run over them. (That is a story we've heard before...I will wait for the video.)

Now, it is bad enough that this incident occurred, but the numerous Facebook posts that try to justify the taking of this child's life is heart-wrenching. They do not ascribe any fault to the police officers..."the driver should not have headed toward the officers, nearly hitting them." But the tragedy of the snuffing out of this baby's life causes them no grief. It elicits no sympathy. They acknowledge neither his humanity nor his innocence.

That is the America I cannot celebrate. All of America's storied history is muddied, defiled by its inability to acknowledge the cruelty, hatred and bigotry that is buried beneath its gloried accomplishments; attributes that allowed it to build its success on the backs of blacks and other minorities who to this day have not been acknowledged as fully American, or even fully human.

So there will be no fireworks for me. There will be no celebration. Instead, I will celebrate Juneteenth, which commemorates when many of my people learned of the Emancipation Proclamation, a proclamation that to this day has not been fully realized. Because of that, I see no reason to celebrate this historic anniversary.

Don't Be Distracted During America's Fight For Justice

Just because Renee Good, Alex Pretti, and Keith Porter are no longer in the news does not mean they are not still dead.

It does not mean that they were not killed at the hand of the state. It does not mean that their deaths were not homicides. It does not mean that a myriad of other American citizens have not been targeted, attacked, raped and imprisoned by the Trump administration.

The atrocities continue though media attention does not.

The Kennedy Center is still under attack. The White House sits in the ruins of the West Wing. People are still being disappeared. Detention centers are still being built and women and children are still being raped in them.

Gas prices are still too high. Citizens are being oppressed by rising costs for food, housing and other necessities. The South is still trying to suppress your vote and Trump and his family are still on the grift, using taxpayer money as a personal piggy bank.

Congress is still ineffective, and the Supreme Court is still propping up a convicted felon. Insurrectionists have been pardoned and promised a payout for their January 6th acts of treason. And they are not the only criminals pardoned by this administration.

Iran still has control of the Strait of Hormuz, and there is no discernible end to the conflict that has cost American lives and treasure. America has become a joke on the world stage, and America's 80-year-old president appears to have signs of dementia, and various other physical ailments. He thinks he is a superhero, or perhaps, God. He messes his pants and falls asleep during important meetings. He still has control of the army and its nuclear weapons. The media runs breathlessly back and forth from one firestorm to another. We have gone from weekly breaking news to daily and sometimes even hourly. It is dizzying...sometimes incomprehensible.

But we must not let the dash from one existential crisis to another overshadow the horrors that we know now exist in our society, our politics and our social interactions. Do not be distracted by the firehose of B.S. coming out of the White House and Congress meant to confuse and obfuscate.

America is in trouble. Only the American people stand between freedom and this nation's ultimate downfall. So we must focus.

The Trump administration has systematically decimated much of the infrastructure that made our nation the beacon for freedom throughout the world. While we have many times fallen short, our history demonstrates that we sought to be a society that provides equality for all it citizens. Our nation has struggled to build that "more perfect union" that the Founders sought.

But the struggle is not near to its completion. The periods in our nation's history where we lost ground are more numerous than most of us would like. This, unfortunately is such a time.

We must continue to pursue liberty. We must continue to fight for justice. We must seek to live up to our heritage where we offer refuge to the poor, the downtrodden, and those who hope for a better life.

Do not be distracted. We must continue to seek ways to rebuild the foundation that has kept us safe for 250 years. (Unfortunately, we have not all enjoyed America's promise for much of that time...nevertheless, it is our goal.)

As the scripture said in Nehemiah..."Stay on the wall,"(Nehemiah 6:3) until our fortress is rebuilt. It will take all of us working together...those always afforded the riches this land has offered, and those who still strive for total inclusion.

Don't be distracted. Stay focused. Rebuild the walls.

NC Alliance of Black Elected Officials holds 20th Annual NC Black Summit

The NC Alliance of Black Elected Officials held it’s 20th Annual NC Black Summit April 23-24 at the Raleigh Marriott Crabtree Valley. This year’s theme of "Unleashing OUR Power, United in Purpose," provided a platform for Black leaders throughout the state to connect, share their experiences, and collaborate on addressing mutual challenges. The organization’s foundation was built on the belief that collective problem-solving among community leaders would strengthen advocacy and foster positive change.

The 2026 Black Summit recognized founding staff and executive leadership of the Alliance of NC Black elected officials.

Accountability and Misconduct in Congress

I am disappointed with Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell. If he is guilty, and evidence suggests he may be, he should face appropriate consequences for his actions. However, there is a troubling inconsistency in how justice is applied within our country. While Democrats are held accountable for their misdeeds—as they should be when found at fault—Republicans who commit similar or even more serious offenses often seem to escape punishment and walk free.

The allegations against Congressman Swalwell are just part of a broader pattern of sexual scandals that have involved members from both political parties. These incidents helped ignite the 2017 #MeTooCongress movement, which called for greater transparency and accountability regarding sexual misconduct in Congress. Among those implicated is Republican Congressman Tony Gonzales, who admitted to having a sexual relationship with a staffer who later died by suicide.

Both Swalwell and Gonzales have resigned their positions, ensuring that the balance of power within Congress remains unchanged. However, this raises important questions about what would happen if only one of them were credibly accused of abuse, and the implications such a situation might have for Congressional power dynamics.

Historically, misconduct among members of Congress has often been addressed through closed-door investigations. These processes tend to shield members from public scrutiny and prioritize their protection over that of the victims. Additionally, until recent reforms, taxpayer funds were used to settle harassment complaints. Democrats generally advocate for more stringent and immediate consequences when one of their colleagues faces accusations of sexual misconduct. In the end, it is the victims who incur the reputational risks and suffer political, social and employment consequences.

Thwarting Trumps Ambition to be King

I am not sure Americans understand the threat the Trump administration poses for our nation’s continued democracy. Legal scholars, advocacy groups and political opponents have noted his sustained assault on constitutional norms and principles that maintained our democracy nearly 250 years.

The Trump administration has initiated an aggressive campaign targeting a wide range of fundamental rights and protections. This assault extends to immigrants, voting rights, civil rights, states’ rights, and women’s rights, undermining the progress and security these groups have achieved over decades. By challenging and diminishing these rights, the administration has shown a disregard for the foundational values upon which the United States has long stood.

Central to this effort is the administration’s willingness to overlook, and in many cases, actively contravene established legal precedents and constitutional safeguards. For example, actions related to birthright citizenship directly challenge the 14^th Amendment. Similarly, the administration has disregarded the principle of Separation of Powers and has overstepped its authority in congressional spending, ignoring the checks and balances that are crucial to the functioning of American democracy. These departures from tradition and law reflect a broader pattern of governance that puts personal and political interests ahead of constitutional norms.

Despite their often disorganized and seemingly incompetent behavior, the administration has made alarming progress toward a deeply concerning objective: the systematic rollback of constitutional rights for American citizens. The aim appears to be the establishment of a government resembling a monarchy, with Trump and his family positioned as the central figures of power. This gradual shift away from the democratic principles and constitutional framework upon which the United States was founded signals an unprecedented threat to the nation’s longstanding traditions of liberty and justice.

The consequences of these actions are stark. America is witnessing the slow dismantling of its constitutional foundation, a process that leaves the country vulnerable and exposed. This erosion is comparable to a scenario in which an individual, worn down by persistent advances, ultimately yields to an unwelcome suitor—only to discover that her initial fears of mistreatment and brutality were justified. As constitutional safeguards continue to be weakened, the nation faces an uncertain future, one in which the values that have defined its democracy are increasingly at risk.

Though Trump appears to be quite mad when you view his behavior on the world stage, he is nonetheless cunning. Many of his goals are so absurd that they seem to have no chance of succeeding, but he constantly and consistently pursues them. He chips away at our foundation the way a prison inmate chips away the wall that stands between him and freedom with nothing more than a kitchen fork.

His cabinet is comprised of sycophants who are both unqualified and who place Trump’s desires over constitutional norms. Their primary goal seems to be the implementation of his every whim, whether constitutional or not.

Chief among them is Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth who has embarked on a rampage to kneecap the armed forces by firing top military leadership, even as the U.S. is embroiled in a war against Iran. The abrupt dismissal of leaders such as Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George and Army Gen. David Hodne blindsided military leadership. While troops are being deployed to the Middle East, Hegseth summarily dismissed Hodne, the four-star general tasked with providing appropriate equipment to protect U.S. forces.

Dozens of other military leaders, many of them female and/or black, recently were terminated from their positions. It makes one wonder why this administration so desperately wants to decapitate the military. This pattern of dismissals raises significant questions about the administration’s intent in destabilizing the military’s leadership structure.

The judiciary has made only weak attempts to contain the rise of authoritarianism fostered under the Trump administration. Congress, on the other hand, has buckled beneath Trump’s onslaught.

In this critical moment, the preservation of American freedom and democracy rests squarely on the shoulders of its citizens. The institutions that once served as reliable safeguards—such as congress, the courts and the military—can no longer be counted on to defend our democratic principles. Instead, it is up to the American people themselves to protect the nation’s future.

Our most effective tool in this fight is the ballot. By voting, we exercise our fundamental rights and affirm our commitment to democracy. It is through collective action and vigilance that we can ensure the survival of the liberties and values that have defined our country for generations.

In the current climate, where threats to democracy are increasingly present, it is essential for every citizen to exercise their right to vote. Even when confronted with challenges such as militarized polling stations or intimidation from groups like the Proud Boys, we must not be silenced. The act of voting is not only a right, but a crucial responsibility that ensures our voices are heard and our values are protected.

We must steadfastly defend our right to vote, making certain that every ballot is counted fairly and accurately. By standing up against any form of suppression or intimidation, we play a vital role in preserving the democratic process. The survival of democracy in America depends on our collective determination to participate, protect, and promote free and fair elections. Only through this unwavering commitment can we guarantee that democracy continues to thrive in our nation.

Trump’s War: The Bully Without Backup

So, Donald Trump and Secretary of War Pete Hegeseth decided it was a good idea to play wargames with Iran. Both Trump and Hegseth seem to think America’s military is a cadre of toy soldiers they can use to demonstrate what strong men they are, just like kids playing in the back yard. They entered this war with little thought, and apparently no plan, having left military experts out of the conversation. They thought they would drop a couple of bombs, assassinate a couple of leaders and that Iran would play the role of a whimpering underdog, fleeing from their strength and might. Hegseth talks about killing and fighting as though that is a goal, rather than a deterrent.

In the three weeks since the two countries launched their attacks on Iran, the United Nations has noted mounting reports of civilian casualties. Trump’s little foray into militarism has resulted in the bombing of a school in the Iranian city of Minab, where more than 160 schoolgirls were murdered and as many as 100 more people were wounded.

Iran answered American and Israeli attacks with drone and missile attacks on Gulf States. As of March 15, service members killed in the Middle East numbered 13. Iran also moved to close the Strait of Hormuz, a vital, narrow passage connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arbian Sea. It is the world’s most important oil transit corridor. The strait is only 21-33 miles wide and serves as the only sea route for much of the crude oil and liquid natural gas exported by Saudi Arbia, Iraq, Qatar, Kuwait and Iran.

Often referred to as the gate to the Persian Gulf, Iran has restricted passage through the Strait to the US and its allies. As a result, oil prices have surged to about $100 per barrel. About 20 percent of the world’s oil usually passes through the Strait, and so global oil prices have soared. Before the war, oil was around $70 a barrel. U.S. gas prices now average $3.71. That’s up 80 cents over a month ago.

Clearly that does not play well on the nightly news in America, so Trump is seeking to extricate himself from a web of his own weaving. His next move in this bloody game is to coerce NATO allies to join him in reopening the Strait. The problem is, the Allies were not consulted when Trump started this war and do not feel compelled to join a naval coalition to escort ships through the Strait. While he calls Iran a “paper tiger”, he still wants NATO allies to send warships to secure the strait.

So, Trump has started a war he cannot finish and now turns to NATO to back his play. But this is not NATO’s war. NATO is obliged to come to the aid of its members once they have been attacked. Nothing in their charter compels them to join a member who is the aggressor.

Trump and Hegseth must play their war game, “EPIC FURY,” alone. The problem is Iran is not playing and war is not a game. What America ends up with is “EPIC FAILURE,” as the bully stands alone.

Battleground State North Carolina March 3rd Primary

Early voting has ended in North Carolina, but it is still not too late for your voice to be heard. The 2026 Primary Election is March 3, 2026.

As Washington D.C. swirls out of control, it is more important than ever that all those Americans who marched in the streets to decry the abuses of the current administration, march into the voting booth to put action behind their rhetoric. It seems that North Carolinians are motivated to do so, with early voting totals in Wake County topping 500,000 through Thursday, February 26. According to Catawba College’s Center for N.C. Politics & Public Service, Early voting in North Carolina surpassed both the 2022 midterm primary and the 2024 presidential primary totals at the same point in the calendar year.

Data analysis showed that early voting through Thursday was about 24% higher than at the same point in the 2022 midterm primaries-and even surpassed the 2024 presidential primaries. For context, the 2022 midterm primaries had the highest turnout for a midterm primary in the state in 20 years.

With record numbers of voters participating in the early-voting cycle, what remains to be seen is who will turn out on election day. Democrats seem to have a strong showing in early voting among registered partisans and Unaffiliated voters. According to Old North State Politics half of Unaffiliated voters chose the Democratic ballot. This could be impactful if it carries over to the March 3^rd primary vote.

This election marks a pivotal point in our nation’s history. Not since the civil war have Americans had such a profound decision to make about who we will be, both domestically and on the world stage. As we wrestle with an authoritarian assault on our democracy we must decide whether justice and the rule of law are the real underpinnings that hold up our democracy.

At the end of the day, it is up to the voters to confirm or deny the direction in which our country is going. That means it is up to you.

If you haven’t voted, turn out on March 3^rd and make your voice heard.

Trump Insults Nation's Only Black Governor

As the sitting president continues to sow chaos throughout the political landscape, he outdid himself over the past week. First, he tweeted a racist photo of former president and first lady Barack and Michelle Obama. (He claims one of staff did it yet refuses to apologize for it or chastise whoever did.) Then he moved to disinvite Governor Wes Moore of Maryland from a bipartisan dinner for governors at the White House.

This is particularly puzzling since Moore is the vice chair of the organization and the only sitting Black governor. Trump announced that only Republican governors would be invited to the bipartisan winter meeting of the National Governors Association (NGA). He specifically blocked Moore and Colorado Gov. Jared Polis from the event’s black-tie dinner. Both have publicly challenged the White House since Trump began his second term.

Moore opposes Trump’s immigration policies and his deployment of the National Guard to, supposedly, combat crime in states led by Democrats. He also supports redrawing Maryland’s voting maps in response to Trumps efforts to gerrymander districts to create GOP majorities.

Moore says the National Governors Association, known for bipartisan cooperation committed that the dinner will not be considered an official NGA event. Meetings between the president and governors typically allow direct discussion of national issues. Moore claims his exclusion from this event may be due to race and criticizes the president’s actions as unaddressed.

Trump Continues His Politics of Distraction

So, Trump is at it again. Trying to distract us from the EPSTEIN FILES....

- Blowing up boats in open waters

- Kidnapping a foreign leader

- Sending troops to major sanctuary cities to war against the community

- Using babies as bait to lure immigrants to capture

- Crashing into people's cars on the streets of America as a means of apprehension

- Disbursing tear gas into neighborhoods, cars and houses

- Tear gassing people in the face

- Kidnapping American citizens and holding them unlawfully

- Killing American citizens in the streets

And now he wants to start a war with Iran for carrying out similar atrocities against its own citizens. Oh, and let's not forget that he is sending the FBI into Georgia to try to rewrite history to say he won the election against Joe Biden.

All of this deserves America's attention. But we cannot forget the Epstein files. He needs to be prosecuted for all of the above. But he, and all others who show up in the Epstein files need to be made to account for their actions and pay for any crimes they may have committed.

America Awakens to the Horrors of ICE Tactics

Everyone has heard of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, both executed by ICE agents while peacefully protesting in Minnesota. It is horrific and sickening. It is unthinkable that those are the images I see when I turn on the morning news. Muted in the media coverage, however, are stories of black and brown people who have been abused and murdered at the hands of ICE. Extrajudicial killings of people of color is normal in America. It does not pierce the conscience of America as these killing did, though it should.

Another narrative in the media is how Renee Good and Alex Pretti were great citizens, and from all accounts they were. But that was not what made their murders wrong. No one needs to be dragged through the streets, peppered sprayed in the eyes and set upon by a hoard of jack-booted thugs and ultimately be slain.

The brutality of this agency is unbelievable. There are at least 13 instances of immigration officers firing at or into civilian vehicles. At least eight of those resulted in gunshot wounds, with two leading to deaths. Those are just the ones we know about. And the general public does not even know their names. Assumptions by many is that these people represent the “worst of the worse” Trump so fondly refers to in his rants about immigration.

Keith Porter, a black 43-year-old father of two was shot by an off-duty U.S. ICE agent in California on New Year’s Eve. He was not the “perfect victim” whose killing raises red flags for your average white Americans. Porter fired his gun in the air in celebration of New Year’s Eve according to his family. This tradition began in early U.S. history as a symbol of celebration and renewal, and it is occasionally still practiced in some Southern regions. His actions were illegal but did not warrant a death sentence. And ICE agents are not police. But the media attention focused on him for a moment and then moved on.

They aimed a bright light on the murder of both Renee Good and Alex Pretti who had every right to protest. They had every right to record the violence being inflicted upon the citizens of Minneapolis. They had every right to offer a hand to a citizen violently pushed to the ground and then pepper sprayed.

Their murders were atrocious, gut wrenching, unthinkable. But so are the assaults on people who may or may not have committed a crime. So are the assaults on children, women, the elderly, the sick, many of whom have fallen victim to an overly aggressive, paramilitary force released on the streets of our cities.

No matter the circumstance, no matter what the crime, everyone residing within our borders has the right to face justice based on due process. No one deserves to be summarily executed in the streets of America, to be detained without warrant or to be expelled without adjudication of their case.

If we are going to wake up…let’s wake ALL the way up.

Stranger Things: America Living in the Upside Down

Every day I wake up to news of additional infractions against the constitutional rights of citizens and inhabitants in America. A nation once seen as full of promise and opportunity is now viewed as a hellscape.

Today, America is a place where soccer moms are shot in the face and five-year-olds are used as bait to entice immigrants to surrender to masked thugs as vicious as Demogorgons; humanoid but not human. Just like these fictional monsters in the Supernatural horror series “Stranger Things,” ICE agents travel in pacts enacting the will of Trump who uses his power to manipulate, terrorize and sometimes kill his victim. His main aim seems to be controlling the world.

The American hellscape, just like the landscape in Stranger Things, creeps into every corner of our existence, consuming everything in its path. While ICE agents ram cars on our highways and beat and choke a 16-year-old citizen whose only mistake was travelling to school in a car driven by his immigrant father, these thugs have no respect for the rule of law. They murdered Alex Pretti, who simply attempted to protect a woman who they had viciously attacked and pepper sprayed. After the first shot, they peppered his body with up to ten shots once he was down. It is reported that one of the agents commented their actions were just like the video game, “Call of Duty”.

This is not law enforcement, and it certainly is not a game. This is anarchy cloaked in governmental authority. It appears that Donald Trump and his administration have unleashed a rabid group of criminals upon the streets of America, parading as law enforcement. It is alleged that many ICE agents were pulled from the ranks of the January 6^th rioters, and they seem anxious to continue their attack on the foundational rights and privileges enjoyed by Americans for well over 200 years.

They have taken to the streets kicking down doors, breaking windows dragging people from cars, beating citizens and non-citizens alike, with no regard to the constitutionality of their actions. This administration has given them license to do as they please to those residing within our borders.

As disturbing as those actions are, it appears this administration has not seen enough violence on the streets. Trump seemingly plans to deploy the ACUTUAL military to the streets of American communities.

As new atrocities come into view daily, Congress and the courts seem stymied by the brazenness of this administration’s attacks on the rule of law. It is as though they are surprised that an elected leader of the United States would choose not to play by the rules.

Our courts and our Congress seem to be caught flat-footed in the face of an authoritarian leader whose goal is to subjugate the people and undermine the Constitution. It is amazing that they did not anticipate this upside-down world, when the Constitution itself recognized it, defined it and set up guard rails to contain it.

While our Founders clearly understood that one day someone would attempt to steal the freedoms they fought so hard to wrest from the hands of an imperialistic government, they believed that they had established a framework strong enough to repel a dictator’s rise to power. Unfortunately, those agencies empowered to balance overreach by an authoritarian administration seem to be impotent. While the courts have awarded shallow victories in this fight, our gerrymandered Congress is stymied and offers us little relief.

So, we are at a crossroad. What are American citizens to do? If our courts and our Congress cannot protect us, what are we to do? Will our world remain upside down, or will we fight to return to normalcy? It is for Americans to choose.

ICE Agents Kill American Citizen

On January 7, 2026 Trump’s thugs killed an American citizen in cold blood. Renee Good, a Minnesota poet and mother, is accused of intentionally trying to run over ICE officers, although video indicates she was attempting to leave the scene. ICE officer Jonathan Ross pumped three bullets into Goods car, shooting her in the head. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem then took to the airwaves to lie about it. She labeled the victim as a domestic terrorist within hours of the incident and claimed the agent is immune from prosecution.

Since her assassination Good has been vilified by members of the Trump administration, even though her final words were "I don't hate you." Compare her character to that of the assassin who called her a f'n bitch as he shot two additional rounds into her head. Let us not forget, Good was an American citizen exercising her constitutional right to protest when she was murdered on the streets of Minneapolis, just blocks from where George Floyd had been murdered by Minneapolis police in May of 2020.

The FBI has taken over the investigation, refusing to share case materials with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension(MBCA) that includes evidence from the scene and eyewitness testimony. As the administration continues its public attacks on Good, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz says that he fears that there will not be a fair outcome if the MBCA is not allowed access to crucial crime scene data. It appears that the MBCA will pursue a parallel investigation into the murder.

While Trump claims the ICE officer who killed Renee Good has total immunity, law seems to indicate that state prosecutors have the authority to pursue charges. The officers' qualified immunity under federal law will likely complicate the prosecution. The state is currently collecting evidence before making a decision on whether to bring charges.

Sen. Mark Kelly Faces Death Threat

President Donald Trump labelled Arizona Democrat Mark Kelly and several other Democratic veterans as traitors who should be executed. Kelly and six Democrats with military or national security backgrounds appeared in an advertisement targeted to military personnel stating that they should disobey unlawful orders. The advertisement triggered a firestorm in the West Wing of the White House which caused a red-faced, white-knuckled Donald Trump to demand retribution.

It was not an outrageous thing for the Democrats to say. In fact, they simply quoted the United States Military Code of Justice which establishes the legal standards for military personnel. Under this code, military personnel are required to obey lawful orders. Likewise, military personnel HAVE a DUTY to refuse to follow unlawful orders. In fact, following such orders may expose them to criminal liability. An unlawful order is one that requires the commission of a crime, violates the Constitution, federal law or clear international law.

It is ludicrous that Americans who use their right to free speech to voice concern over the illegal actions of this government could be threatened. We all know that those who participated in the advertisement had the right to say that soldiers DO NOT have to and SHOULD NOT follow unlawful orders. Some may even think they had the obligation to speak out. Yet this administration will spend time and the taxpayer's money to pursue this frivolous suit to detract from more pressing matters, such has the high cost of living, out of control health care costs, the destruction of our history, the dismantling of civil rights, Gestapo-styled state policing, the collapse of foreign alliances and of course, the rape of children, only to name a few.

The fact that the FBI is investigating a sitting senator for reciting the uniform code is exactly WHY we need to keep speaking up.

While Kelly is being investigated by the FBI for speaking the truth, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is accused of ordering a strike on a purported drug-smuggling vessel in international waters and then ordering a second strike to kill any survivors. As we examine the Military Code of Justice, clearly, one of these actions is not like the other.

Kelly and company exercised their right to free speech to remind military personnel of their obligation to act lawfully while carrying out their duties. Conversely, Hegseth is setting up both himself and those soldiers who carried out his orders to face war crimes and murder if he in fact issued the alleged “kill order” that resulted in the deaths of two survivors of the first strike. Trump rages about the one, and is resoundingly quiet about the other.

Hegseth's actions have raised significant legal and ethical issues regarding the drug boat strikes. The Trump administration has carried out more than a dozen of these strikes since September 2025. More than 70 people have been killed in what may well be declared illegal operations by the American military under Hegseth’s command.

It is incredible that the FBI is investigating a sitting senator for reciting the Military Uniform Code of Justice while ignoring the highly suspect bombings in international waters that have cost the lives of these individuals without the benefit of evidence, a court or a jury. American patriots all over the country must speak up just as Kelly and his compatriots did.

We are a nation of laws. In times such as these, it is good when we are reminded.

Democrats Back Down with Compassion, Not Weakness

It appears that the U.S. government shutdown is nearing an end, as Republicans continue to steadfastly oppose negotiations with Democrats. Amazingly, Democrats find themselves at this juncture, even after the overwhelming rejection of Republican candidates and their far-right politics during the November 4th elections.

It is much like the difficult decision faced by King Solomon in 1 Kings, 3: 16-28, when two women who lived together each claimed the same child as their own. It appears that one woman rolled over and killed her baby as they slept. She then switched her dead baby with the living child of her roommate.

With no witnesses and no one to identify the child’s mother, Solomon was faced with an almost impossible task to determine to whom the living child belonged. So, he did something outrageous. Since he could not determine the identity of the true mother, he ordered his soldiers to bring a sword to cut the baby in half and give half to each woman. The true mother cried out, “Please don’t kill my son…give him to her…just don’t kill him.” Solomon then discerned who the true mother was and returned the child to his true mother.

Democrats faced a similarly difficult decision as they fought to maintain healthcare for millions of Americans. The Affordable Care Act tax credits (ACA), a signature Obama program, are set to expire at the end of the year. If that occurs, Americans will face sharply higher health insurance premiums and possible loss of coverage. This program is made affordable through tax credits targeted to assist middle-class Americans who would otherwise fall outside the subsidy range. Before the enactment of the American Rescue Plan Act and the Inflation Reduction Act, those participating in the ACA faced a steep premium increase, making the coverage untenable for many Americans.

While Democrats have fought ferociously to maintain the healthcare tax credits, Republicans have been willing to sacrifice hundreds of thousands of federal workers to fight the Democrats' attempt to safeguard healthcare. Many federal workers have been furloughed or fired, and most have not received pay during this shutdown, although workers like soldiers and air traffic controllers are still required to work. Instead of working to solve the problems facing our country, the Republicans took more than a month “vacation” as House Speaker Mike Johnson sent them home and advised them NOT to hold town hall meetings.

Acutely aware of the pain Americans were suffering as they struggled to pay mortgages, buy groceries, or pay for a myriad of necessary expenses without the funds to do so, Democrats were much like the mother in the Bible story who chose to relent rather than have the baby cut in half.

I am unsure whether it was the right choice. Unfortunately, America is not run by Solomon-like leaders, nor do I have divine insight. I know that, just as the woman in the scriptures was hard-hearted enough to sacrifice the child rather than acknowledge the death of her own, the Republicans did not feel the people’s pain and were willing to destroy everyone if they were unable to get their way. Even in the face of a landslide election that indicates Americans think they are wrong-headed, they had no intention of negotiating to find a solution that was acceptable to all.

I am somewhat disheartened that Senate Democrats backed down, but I don’t know how to split the baby without killing it. I hope that Americans view the Democratic struggle as one of compassion, and not weakness.
