The Fruit Slice Earrings are a happy, summery, and super fun statement earring!  Slices of lemon, orange, and watermelon are easy to make with simple stitches.  Gives any outfit a joyful touch!

Materials:

• F (3.75 mm) crochet hook 
• Embroidery floss in fruity colors (I used DMC cotton floss in yellow, orange, bright pink, green, black, and white)
• Yarn/tapestry needle (a smaller one that can be used with embroidery floss)
• Scissors
• 4 small jump rings
• Jewelry pliers (regular pliers are ok too)
• Post style earrings with backs
• Hot glue or craft glue
• Optional–fabric stiffener and small brush

Sizing:

• Total height is 2.5 inches tall and 1 inch wide

Pattern Notes:

• Queue up on Ravelry here
• Earrings too big for you?  Try doing just one fruit slice!
• Mix up the colors a bit for different fruits, try a light green center with a dark green edge for a lime for example.
• Lemon slice–Row 1 and 2 in yellow, row 3 in white, row 4 in yellow, white embroidery
• Orange slice–Row 1 and 2 in orange, row 3 in white, row 4 in orange, white embroidery
• Lemon slice–Row 1 and 2 in pink, row 3 in white, row 4 in green, black embroidery

Instructions:

Note: see pattern notes above for which color to use for each row for each type of fruit.

Ch 3, then join in the furthest chain from the hook with a slip stitch to make a ring.

Row 1: Work 6 sc into the center of the ring.

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn.  Work a sc into the first st, then *work 2 sc into the next stitch.  Repeat from * across.

Row 3: Ch 1 and turn.  Work a sc into each stitch across.

Row 4: Ch 1 and turn.  Work a sc into each stitch across.

Fasten off yarn and weave in all ends.

For the lemon and orange, embroider three little lines with white floss to represent citrus segments as shown.

For the watermelon, embroider french knot seeds with black floss in a random pattern to represent seeds as shown.  If you don’t know how to make french knots, be sure to check out the video where I walk through the steps!  Alternatively, you can also try a small black bead too!

Assembly Instructions: 

• As an option, lightly paint the back of the fruit slices some fabric stiffener.  I have found that multiple thin layers works much better than one thick layer.
• Let dry overnight.
• Connect the slices as shown with the jump rings, starting with lemon at the top, then orange, and watermelon on the bottom. 
• Hot glue (or craft glue) the earring post to the back and let cool/dry.
• Done and ready to wear!

Today we’ll be focusing on topping those pretty points on the top of the blanket with fun tassels, then we’ll move onto the finish work!

How To Make A Tassel:

• Make one per point on the top and bottom edges of the blanket.
• Cut two pieces of yarn, each about 12 inches long.  Set aside.  Wrap yarn around all four fingers for a total of about 40 wraps.  Thread one piece of yarn into the top of the bundle and tie it securely.  Tie a second piece of yarn around the top of the bundle, about 1/4 of the way down, tucking in ends.  Cut loops from the bottom of the tassel.  Trim across to neaten.  Repeat for each tassel.

When you have finished adding tassels  to each point, weave in all ends and it’s done!

Materials:

• K (6.5 mm) crochet hook 
• 688 yards of #4/medium weight yarn (I used 2 cakes of Mandala Ombre from Lion Brand Yarn in the “Tranquil” colorway)
• Yarn/tapestry needle (a smaller one that can be used with embroidery floss)
• Scissors 
• Measuring Tape

Sizing:

• Bottom point straight up: 25 inches
• Bottom point over to the side point: 41 inches
• Top edge of the triangle from point to point: 54 inches

Pattern Notes:

• Easily change the triangle dimensions (both width and height) by working more or less rows of the pattern.
• Queue up on Ravelry here

Instructions:

Ch 4, then join in the furthest ch with a sl st to form a loop.

Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as a dc), then work 2 dc into the center of the ring.  Ch 2, then work 3 dc into the center of the ring.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as a dc) and turn.  Work 2 dc into the very first stitch (the loop you’ll see at the bottom of the turning chain you just made).  Work a dc into each of the next two stitches.  Work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) into the chain 2 space (this will create the triangle point).  Work a dc into each of the next two stitches, then 3 dc into the turning chain space.

Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as a dc) and turn. Work 2 dc into the very first stitch (the loop you’ll see at the bottom of the turning chain you just made).  Work a bpdc (back post double crochet) into each stitch until you get to the ch 2 space.  Work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) into the ch 2 space.  Work a bpdc (back post double crochet) into each stitch until you get to the turning chain space.  Work 3 dc into the turning chain space.

Row 4: Ch 3 (counts as a dc) and turn.  Work 2 dc into the very first stitch (the loop you’ll see at the bottom of the turning chain you just made).  Work a dc into each stitch until you get to the ch 2 space.  Work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) into the ch 2 space.  Work a dc into each stitch until you get to the turning chain space.  Work 3 dc into the turning chain space.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until your shawl is as large as you like!  Weave in all ends and it’s ready to wear!

Today we’ll be focusing on filling up the sides of the blanket with half granny hexagons to give it a nice straight edge.

The Half Granny Hexagon:

Chain 4 and join into a ring with a slip stitch.

Row 1: Chain 4 (counts as a dc, ch 1), then work (dc, chain 1) 5 times into the center of the ring.  Then work one more dc.  

Row 2: Chain 3 and turn.  In the first space work (2 dc, ch 1) Work (2 dc, ch 1) in each ch 1 space across. Then work (2 dc, ch 1, dc) in the turning chain space.  

Row 3: Chain 3 and turn.  In the first space work (3 dc, ch 1) Work (3 dc, ch 1) in each ch 1 space across. Then work a dc in the turning chain space.  

Note: row 4 is where the half circle becomes a hexagon.

Row 4: Chain 4 and turn (counts as a dc, ch 1).  In the first space, work (3 dc, ch 1), next space (3 dc, ch 1). In the next space work (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1).  In the next space work (3 dc, ch 1).  Next space (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1).  Next space (3 dc, ch 1), then work (3 dc, ch 1, dc)

Note: for row 5, we will be joining onto the blanket.

Round 5: Chain 1 and turn. Then slip stitch join the half hexagon into the corner space of the hexagon all the way to the right as it fits into the “nook” where it will go.  Work 3 dc into the first space, then sl st join into the next space of the other hexagon.  Work 3 dc, then sl st join into the next space of the other hexagon, then 3 dc.  Sl st join into the next space of the other hexagon, then work the first 3 dc of the corner.  Sl st join into the space in between the other two hexagons, then work 3 dc to finish the corner. Sl st join into the next space of the other hexagon, then 3 dc.  Sl st join then work 3 dc.  Work 3 dc to make the first part of the corner, sl st join into the space between the other two hexagons, the 3 dc to finish the corner.  Sl st join into the next space of the other hexagon, then 3 dc.  Sl st join into the other hexagon, then 3 dc.  Sl st join into the other hexagon, then 3 dc into the turning chain space.  Finish by working a last sl st join into the corner space of the other hexagon.

The Pool Party Earrings are a super fun pair of statement earrings that you can whip up in no time!  Just a quick circle and tassel and they’re ready to wear.  Make a pair to match a swimsuit or favorite summer outfit too!

Materials:

• E (3.5 mm) crochet hook 
• 2 skeins of embroidery floss (I used DMC cotton floss in #603 for the circle and #964 for the tassel)
• Yarn/tapestry needle (a smaller one that can be used with embroidery floss)
• Scissors 
• Measuring Tape
• Earring hook
• Beads (any type, just make sure they can fit onto the earring hook wire)
• 2 jump rings
• Jewelry pliers
• Fabric stiffener & small brush (optional)

Sizing:

• Total earring height is 3.5 inches tall
• Circle is 1 inch tall
• Tassel is 1.5 inches tall

Pattern Notes:

• If these earrings are too big for you, try a post backing or trim the tassel shorter.

Circle Instructions:

• Ch 4 and join in the chain furthest from the hook to create a ring.
• Round 1: Chain 2, then work 15 dc into the center of the ring.
• Slip stitch in the topmost chain at the beginning to close the round.
• Weave in all ends.
• Repeat for the second circle.

Tassel Instructions:

• Cut two pieces of yarn each about 8 inches long.
• Wrap the floss around two fingers 10 times.
• Carefully slip the bundle off of your fingers and tie it at the top with one of the floss strands you cut earlier.
• Tie around the tassel around the top part, about a quarter of the way down.
• Weave in the side tails if needed, but keep the top tails intact to tie onto the circle later.

Assembly Instructions: 

• Attach a jump ring to the top of the circle.  Attach the earring hook to the jump ring as well.
• Open up the hook and string some beads onto the hook.
• Tie the tassel to the bottom of the circle and weave in ends.
• As an option, lightly paint the back of the circles and tassels with some fabric stiffener.  I have found that multiple thin layers works much better than one thick layer.
• Let dry overnight and they are ready to wear!

Today we’ll focus on the full hexagons and joining them together.  Let’s do a sizing recap first.  My blanket is throw sized and is 6 full hexagons across and 9 full hexagons tall.  Our half hexagons will be added later to give the sides a straight edge in next week’s tutorial.  To figure out what size you’d like to make, check out this chart of common blanket sizes:

Next, if you are doing a colorful theme like the one shown, you’ll want to be mindful of your color placement.  Try to avoid placing two of the same (or similar) colors side by side.  Think high contrast for maximum effect.

Ok, let’s move onto our hexagons, shall we?

The First Hexagon:

Chain 4 and join into a ring with a slip stitch.

Round 1: Chain 4 (counts as a dc, ch 1), then work (a dc, chain 1) 11 times.  Join to close with a slip stitch.

Note: If you want to make round 2 in the same color, simply slip stitch until you reach a ch 1 space and keep going.  If you want to switch colors…cut yarn and join the new yarn at one of the ch 1 spaces and tie securely.

Round 2: Chain 3 and work a dc in the same space.  Chain 1, *then work (2 dc, ch 1) in the next ch 1 space.  Repeat from * around.  Join with a slip stitch to close.

Round 3: Chain 3, then work 2 dc in the same space, then chain 1.  *In the next space, work three dc, then chain 1.  Repeat from * around.  Join with a slip stitch to close.

Round 4 (circle becomes hexagon in this round): Chain 3, and in the first space work (2 dc, chain 1, then 3 dc, ch 1) all in the same space.  This creates the first hexagon corner.  *In the next space, to work the hexagon side, work 3 dc, ch 1).  In the next space (to create the next corner) work 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1). Repeat from * around.  Join with a slip stitch to close.

Round 5: Chain 3, and in the first space work (2 dc, chain 1, then 3 dc, ch 1) all in the same space.  This creates the first hexagon corner.  *In the next space, to work the hexagon side, work 3 dc, ch 1).  In the next space work another side (3 dc, ch 1).  In the next space (to create the next corner) work 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1). Repeat from * around.  Join with a slip stitch to close.

Note: just be sure there is a ch 1 in between each grouping of 3 dc as you work each round. That is what gives it the pretty spaces in between each cluster and keeps it nice and flat.

*IMPORTANT: Make 1 full hexagon to begin, then make all of the other motifs of rounds 1-4.  Then you will join them together for round 5.  Proceed below for the JAYGO (join as you go) technique.

I have seen many different beautiful ways to join motifs as you go, this one is super simple and very quick to do.  Before you begin, you’ll need 1 fully finished hexagon (all five rounds of the pattern), plus at least one or two hexagons (first four rounds of the pattern).  

Note: it really helps to keep everything flat as you work, I like to lay mine on a table or lap as I go.

For the first motif, we learned rounds 1-5 of the very first hexagon, but for the rest of the motifs, we’ll do it this way:

Part 2: Joining The Second Hexagon

Begin the next hexagon and work rounds 1-4 of the granny hexagon (see above).  Begin round 5 as you normally would with that first corner (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1).  Next, work the sides as you normally would (3 dc, ch 1) in each of the next two spaces across. Now we’re ready to make our first join.  In the corner space work 3 dc, then work a slip stitch into the other hexagon’s corner space, then work (3 dc, ch 1) back into the hexagon’s corner.  As you continue down the side of the square, you’ll work 3 dc into the side spaces of the hexagon, but instead of the ch 1, work a slip stitch join into the other square.  When you get to the next corner, work 3 dc, ch 1, then slip stitch join into the other hexagon’s corner space, then 3 dc, ch 1 back into the corner space.  Work the rest of the hexagon the way you normally would (3 dc, ch 1) in each of the side spaces and (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1) in the corner spaces.  Join with a slip stitch to close round, fasten off yarn and you’re ready to join another!

Part 3: Joining Subsequent Hexagons

As you join the rest of your hexagons, you’ll basically be repeating part 2 (see above), except the only difference being that sometimes there will be an area where you’ll be joining into a corner that has two hexagons (instead of simply joining one into another one).  In this case, make you slip stitch join in the spaces between the hexagons where the two corners meet (not the corner space).  Always go directly across in your join to avoid it being off center.  To see this join in action in greater detail, be sure to check out the video.  In the video, I join two hexagons together, then three, showing all possible joining scenarios that may arise as you work on your blanket.  The rule of thumb is that when you don’t require a join, ch 1.  When you are at a spot that requires a join, simply replace the ch 1 with a slip stitch into the other square.

Materials:

• H (5.0 mm) crochet hook 
• 410 yards of #3/light weight cotton yarn (I used 5 balls of Friends 8/8 cotton yarn by Hobbii in Pistachio, Sunflower, Dark Yellow, Whiskey, and Capri Blue)
• Yarn/tapestry needle
• Scissors 
• Measuring Tape

Sizing:

• Bottom point of the triangle straight up to the top middle is 17 inches tall.
• Bottom point up the side of the triangle to either the left or right side points is 23 inches.
• Top edge of the triangle is 37 inches wide.
• total length of the tie from one end to the other is 79 inches long.

Pattern Notes:

• To make the triangle part bigger, work more rows of the granny stripe pattern.
• To make the ties longer, work more chains (no special stitch count for these!

Triangle Instructions:

Ch 5

Row 1: In the 5th ch from the hook, work 3 dc.  Ch 1, then work a dc (all in the same chain).

Row 2: Ch 4 and turn.  Then work (3 dc, ch 1) in the first space (the ch 1 space from the previous row).  Then work (3 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) into the turning ch space.

Row 3: Ch 4 and turn.  Then work (3 dc, ch 1) in the first space (the ch 1 space from the previous row).  Work (3 dc, ch 1) into each ch 1 space across (note: there will be one to work the first time, but then as your wrap grows, you do more and more (3 dc, ch 1) across).  Then work (3 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) into the turning ch space.

Repeat row 2 until your wrap has a height of 17 inches across the top edge OR desired width/height.  Note: As your triangle grows in width, it will also grow in height as well.  Do not fasten off yarn and continue below to the tie section of the instructions.

Instructions for Top Tie of Wrap:

After completing the last stitch of the final row of the triangle, ch 65 (totally ok to do more than this for a longer tie, but just make sure you duplicate this number on the other side too!).  

In the 4th ch from the hook, work a dc.  Work a dc in each chain until you work back to the triangle again. 

When you get back to the top edge of the triangle, work a dc in each stitch and space across. When you reach the end of the top edge of the triangle, ch 65.  Work a dc in the 4th ch from the hook and work a dc in each chain.  When you reach the triangle again at the end of the chains, it will look like this:

To avoid the “stair step look” simply flip the triangle over so it looks like this, 

Then slip stitch into the space where the arrow is pointing:

Done!  Now it looks like a continuous tie!  

Weave in all ends and it is ready to wear!
