The manufacture their food by means of a process called photosynthesis, from elements they find in the air, water, and soil. Sunlight provides the energy for this activity, which is in reality a chain of chemical reactions. Plants also make their own vitamins and digestive enzymes, and the hormones that govern their desires, which are called tropisms. Working with plants gives you a great respect for them. Plants can absorb nutrients through their leaves as well. Plants reproduce in different ways, one of them by means of seeds.

Wilts, leaf spots, blights and fruit rots are just a few of the disease problems that plague vegetables gardens every year. Plant diseases are caused by four primary types of organismes such as fungi, bacteria, nematodes, and viruses. Plant diseases caused by fungi and bacteria are most common when rain showers and heavy dews are frequent and temperatures are warm. Excessive soil moisture will favor root and crown diseases such as damping-off, crown and root rots caused by fungal soil-borne pathogens. Crop rotation is very important in reducing losses to vegetable disease. Continuous plantings within the same plant family of vegetables provide opportunities for pathogen buildup.

Many plant diseases can be seed-borne. This is important to prevent a number of diseases, including halo blight, common blight, banthracnose of snap beans, and bacterial spot of tomatoes. Gardeners starting a crop from transplants should examine transplants carefully before purchasing. Select healthy transplants that appear disease and insect free. Using resistant varieties is the mos efficient way of controlling vegetable disease. Make an effort to buy resistant varieties when they are available. Plant crops such as corn and beans earlier, because their seeds germinate in cooler soils. It's also advantageous to plant these particular crops early to escape severe virus infections

Using trap crops may sometimes help manage virus diseases and aphid populations. You can use a mulch layer of straw, bark, shredded paper or plastic to prevent soil from splashing onto plants and to prevent fruit from touching the bare ground. This will help prevent rots on mature fruit such as strawberries, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers and melons. Sanitation will help reduce overwintering of disease causing organisms. After harvest, remove and destroy plant material. Plow the soil to help break down small rotts and debris that may harbor nematodes, fungi and bacteria. Healthy plants are the best control against plant diseases

It's low in calories but high in flavor. Compared to other vegetables, asparagus is a good source of vitamin A, B1, B2, riboflavin and thiamin. Asparagus gros on almost any type of well drained soil. Female asparagus plants produce berries that drop from the plant, self-seed and can create a crowded palnting. Male plants live longer, yield more, and eliminate the seedling weed problem. Asparagus grows naturally on the banks of streams and near salt marshes, where the salt content of the soil is high and the PH somewhat alkaline. Asparagus will thrive in soils having a salt content too high for many other vegetables. Pests include plants or animals that carry disease, damage our landscapes and gardens, or becume a nuisance and detract from the quality of life. Some examples of pests include insects, rodents, slugs, birds, rabbits, weeds, or brush, mildew, molds, bacteria, and viruses. Pesticide products generally are recognized by their advertised brand names, such as ortho rose and floral dust, fertilome sevin, d-con kills rats, and hi yield diazinon. You should know that every pesticide label must list the total amount of active ingredient in the product. The pesticide label is extremely important because this is where we, the users, find specific instructions for using the product safely. The procedures are simple, and the effects of taking safety precautions pay big dividends in protecting you and your home environment. Any pesticide can pose serious risks to people, pets, or wildlife if not used properly, in a manner consistent with its label.

You should make a depression 6 to 18 inches deep throughout the area of the garden. The soil in your rain garden should be a mix that will allow fast infiltration of water. This can be done using a mixture of about 50% sand or stone aggregate, 30% compost and 20% topsoil. Many rain gardens feature shrubs as well as wild flowers and grasses. You can also choose plants that attract local birds and insects. Large rain gardens generally contain at least 15 different species of plants at a density of 1 per square foot. For smaller gardens, a variety of perennials and shrubs makes a good mix. For the first year your rain garden will most likely require monthly weeding during the growing season.

Tips building a rain garden, you can use peat moss in addition to compost to increase moisture retention. In case of a large rain event, it is important to provide a way for excess water to drain out in order to prevent flooding of your garden. To increase the visits of songbirds and butterflies, incorporate berry and nectar producing plants. Leave the dead or dormant plants standing over the winter. Many of the plants will provide seeds and shelter for birds. In the spring, cut back or mow the stalk to allow new shoots to emerge

Vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts are better adapted to fall gardening, since they produce best quality and flavor when they can mature during cooler weather. Many vegetable crops are well adapted to planting in late summber for a fall harvest. Use fast-maturing cultivars whenever possible to ensure a harvest before killing frost occurs. Some vegetables that are already growing in the garden will continue to produce well into the fall, but are damaged by even a light frost. Some crops are considered semi hardy and will withstand a light frost without protection. You can extend the fall growing season for tender crops by protecting them through early light frosts.

Maintaining healthy lawns and landscape plants, however, ofter requires the use of fertilizers and improper fertilizer use can cause water pollution. Many fertilizer materials, including leaves and grass clippings, contain nitrogen and phosphorus. Most organic fertilizers contain relatively low concentrations of plant nutrients compared to synthetic fertilizers, and release nutrients more slowly. Slow release fertilizers provide a lower concentration of nutrients over a longer period of time. Fertilizer carelessly applied on one lawn can be a waste of the homeowner's money but may otherwise seem insignificant

Healthy gardens, trees and shrubs add beauty and value to a home, allow stormwater to soak into the ground and help filter impurities from the water. Fertilizers should be applied when trees and shrubs are growing poorly and the problem can't be traced to other causes. If plants don't respond, the problem may be soil-related.

Insects, deseases and weeds require control measures. Acidic, infertile, poorly drained or sandy soil may have to be improved. A vegetable garden can produce a steady supply of vegetables from spring to fall. These vegetables can he harvested at optimum maturity or preserved while fresh. Vegetable production provides healthful exercise and an interesting outdoor activity for the entire family. A good garden site is essential for high vegetable yields. Poor sites not only produce low yields, but may also be extremely difficult to grow a garden on at all.

Most garden vegetables require six hours of sunlight or more per day to produce well. Garden vegetables are susceptible to many insect and disease problems. Begin control of garden insects and diseases by following good cultural and sanitation practices. Many vegetables must be kept harvested if the plants are to maintain production. Gardens will produce more in less area and quality will be higher if certain vegetables are grown vertically rather than horizontally.

Anyone can make a rain garden. Rain garden can be an integral part of our stormwater management and environmental approach. They don't require much space, can be fitted into oddball shapes, and can readily added to existing buildings. If you have many low spots, you can choose those that are closest to the downspouts from your roof or nearest to a paved driveway. For preparing large gardens or in very hard soil, it may be worth your while to hire an excavator to bring in a machine for a few hours. Have the excavator use the removed soil to create a knoll or other pleasing contour to your property. If your land is sloped and all the water drains away, you can still build a rain garden by designing a level scallop or small terrace in your slope and creating a rain garden there.

Your rain garden needs to be able to absorb the water coming off your roof and driveway. When you prepare the garden for planting, you must create a dip in the middle where water will collect as it sinks into the soil. There are various zones in a rain garden (very wet, wet to dry and dry) and different kinds of plantswill thrive at different zones. To know how to prepare your rain garden and which plants will work best in your situation, you should have your soil tested. Sometimes creating a rain garden is as simple as directing rain to an absorbent swale in your yard and perhaps putting in a few plants. Rain garden also tend to become wildlife oases, you can expect and should plan for songbirds, butterflies, colors, fragrances and sounds. Rain gardens are low maintenance.

You can also buy established herb plants at local gardening centres. Some of the easiest herbs to grow are rosemary, oregano, chives, basil, cilantro and parsley.

However, most herbs are easy and forgiving plants and should prove no problem to the dedicated indoor gardener. Herbs need very little fertilizer. Use a fertilizer formulated for house plants and follow the label directions carefully, applying the fertilizer only once every two or three months

Even if the containers have never been used before, it is a good practice to wash them well with regular dishwashing liquid and a couple of teaspoons of bleach.

There are also commercial potting soils now that contain timed release fertilizers which are excellent for use in repotting indoor plants. If necessary, put the soil through a sieve to break up hard lumps and sift out any rocks or debris. Don't water your plants until the soil is dry enough that the plant actually needs water.

There are two methods you can use to water your plants :

One method is to water your plants from the top of the soil. When watering from the top of the soil, use a watering can with a narrow spout that will fit between the leaves to prevent splashing too much water on the foliage.

You can also water your plants from the bottom. This method is also preferred for most plants because it allows the water to soal up through the entire soil base

Not only do herbs add flavor to our food, they also can provide to us added nutrients. By growing our own organic herb garden, we can have fresh, chemical free, herbs any time we want. By growing an organic herb garden, we can more fully appreciate the full taste of the herbs. When the chemicals are used in the herb growing process, the natural taste of the herbs is altered. The mulch helps the plants retain moisture. Mulch also helps to suppress weed growth. Mulch, as it decomposes, provides constant nutrient rich food to your plants. Leaves, grass clippings, and wood shavings are excellent choices for mulch. You can also purchase organic mulch. Be sure it does not contain any type of chemicals, or else it will not be organic mulch.

Once you have made the choice to remove the tree, you need to plan its removal. Once you have the falling direction planned out, you should climb up the tree and tie two long ropes near the top. Anchor them on the opposite side of the one that you want it to fall towards. This will allow you to adjust the direction the tree is being lowered in, just in case it starts leaning towards anything it could destroy

Now that you’ve taken all the necessary precautions, you are ready to begin chopping. If you plan on using a manually operated saw or axe, please step back and consider how insane that is. Chopping down a tree by hand will take you forever, and will not even begin to be as accurate as using a chainsaw. If you don’t have a chainsaw, you shouldn’t even consider doing it without one.

Removal of the stump can be slightly more difficult. You have several choices; you can rent out a stump chipper that will completely destroy the visible section of the stump. Or you can spend countless hours digging it out. Digging out the stump is much more thorough, but takes forever

During the process of cell division that all new fruits go through, cool weather can be fatal to the largeness of your fruits. Likewise, if the weather is particularly cloudy very early in the season, then fewer carbohydrates will be available to your plants. Occasionally, if the factors are all against the well being of your fruit tree, then the fruits will drop to the ground before they are even ripe. A lack of water or certain nutrients, or excessive pests and diseases can also damage the growth of fruits. If you notice these things going on early in the season, you should do more fruit thinning than normal

Sometimes as much as three fourths of the fruits should come off, to allow full nutrition to those who remain. The best way to find out how to gain larger fruit sizes is to experiment. If your tree has been around for a while, there is almost nothing you can do to it to cause it to die or stop producing fruit. Just test different thinning techniques or anything you can think of to make the fruits larger. You might even head down to your local nursery and enquire about what they would suggest. They will be able to give you advice based on your region and specific tree, which is better than anything I could tell you. So don’t settle with small fruits. Go out there and find out what exactly you need to do to improve the size

This is known as either a fan or an espalier shape. There is one main branch in the center that is completely vertical, then multiple branches that go off to the side. If the side branches are horizontal it is known as an espalier. If they are sloped, it is known as a fan. Generally these 2 shapes are used in orchards because of how compact they are. By using them, you allow for many more trees to be in the certain amount of space.

However, if land conservation is not an issue or you’re not looking to be efficient, you should probably stick with the traditional tree shape. To aid in the watering of your trees, you should install either a sprinkler system or an irrigation system. The sprinklers require more maintenance, but if you dig an irrigation ditch then it is really easy to just run the faucet for a few minutes every day and reach all the trees. It’s just a matter of what you would prefer

Once your tree collection starts to bear large amounts of fruit, you can consider starting a fruit stand or participating at the farmers market. Instead of letting the fruits go to waste or trying to eat them all (which can lead to some bad stomach aches), you can let the rest of the world enjoy the product of your intense labor. If you become a popular vendor, you might even make back a decent return on your investment. However, you can’t count on making very much money. Starting an orchard shouldn’t be a capitalistic investment. You should only start one if you have a passion for trees

If you buy your tree from a nursery, be especially careful when you are taking it from the nursery to your house

After you've planted your tree you might start to have some problems with pests. To help keep these pests away, always rake away old leaves, brush, or any other decaying matter that could be holding bugs that could be harmful to your tree.

To make sure that your tree always stays healthy in the long run, you should prune it during winter or spring. Water your tree every two weeks during dry times, and be sure not to hit your tree with a lawn mower or a weed eater because it could severely damage the growth process. Also just make sure that your tree gets plenty of water and plenty of sun, and your growing experience should be just great.

Roses need their food too

Watering your roses correctly and in the morning is a good way to keep fungal diseases from hitting your roses

A two inch layer of mulch at the base of your roses is a good way to keep soil born diseases at bay

Many people have probles using the pesticides and insecticides that go along with growing roses and keeping them healthy.

Here are some tips step by step method growing organic roses :

Each bush that you want to plant will need to have a foot of space all around it so that the flowers can get the proper amount of circulation.

You will want to purchase organic roses

Along with roses that have green stems, you will need to look for stems that have evenly spaced leaves that are close together

You will need to use well drained soil so that you can promote the healthy growth that will give the flower all the water and nutrients that it needs from the roots to the flower's head

Fix the soil so that you can build organically

Soak your bare root roses in a large container of composte tea for many hours before you plant them

You must mound up enough good organic sol that is mixed with an equal amount of composte in the middle so that you can spread the roots out and down from where they meet at the trunk

Now, plant the rose at the point where the stem breaks into the root so that it is at soil level, or approximately 1 inch below the top level if you live in an area that is prone to hard winters

You have to check your bare root roses first

Mix your organic soil garden soil with an equal amount of composte and use your hands to gently spread the roots into the soil mix

You have to mulch to help you prevent your roses from being exposes to weeds, and water stress complications

You must feed your roses organically also

Water your organic roses deep at the planting, and then once every week after that during growing season so that you can promote deep roots

You must cultivate the top inch of your soil around each of your roses and fertilize on a monthly basis with a balanced organic fertilizer

To help protect your bed against the various types of pests and insects that can plague your roses, put sticky yellow bars every ten feet to catch them

You may use an organic pesticide if the problem is bad

If your pest problem is sever enough, you may use insecticidal soap to spray over your roses

Adding a rose bush to any garden can be the best choice that you ever made.

Here are all of the steps to plant your potted roses :

You should plant contained roses in the spring, after you are absolutely positive that there is no chance for areturn of the frost

You will want to choose roses that do not have any flowers on them because you are simply trying to establish your roses

You definitely want to choose the right environment for your roses

If you want the transition of your roses from a pot to your garden to go smoothly, you will need to prepare your soil very well

Once you have prepared your soil, you will want to work several spadesful of composte into the planting hole after digging in a hole that is about two feet deep

Tap your rose from its original container and plant it

Lastly, you will want to dig a mote like ring round the rose so that you can pool the water

It takes a steady hand the proper procedure to ensure the best possible roses that you can get.

Here is a list of the proper techniquest to guide pruning your roses process :

Soak your pruning shears in equal parts of water and bleach

Pruning in the early spring, just after the snow melts is best

Hand shears are the best tool for pruning the smaller branches

You want to get rid of the winter protection that you set up like cones, burlap, and mounded soil

You want to get rid of the dead wood first

Next, you want to get rid of the thinner wood, which is the stems that are thinner than a pencil

Cut all of the branches that cross or overlap one another because these are often diseased or will become so

Keep the remaining five branches

Cut your health canes to be about one to four feet long, or whatever size that you prefer

Cut you roses properly so that they stay healthy

You should use bypass pruners that work like scissors and not the anvil types because the anvils crush the stems and make the roses more available to diseases

Unfortunately, roses are the most difficult flower to manage and keep healthy, however, all good things require high maintenance.

Here are some great tips for the regular upkeep of your roses :

You should prune your roses in the early spring

You should cut the dead and damaged branches first. Next, you should cut all but five of the lefover healthy branches.

Cut the bushes by approximately one third or one half, depending on how tall you want them

You should always sharpen yourhand shears before pruning, and prune the climbing roses with caution

Mulching is necessary because it helps to keep your maintenance down a bit

Protect your roses during the winter months by adding a few extra inches of soil to the base of your roses

You should avoid the white plastic cones when doing your winter protection because they trap too much heat during the winter thaw

You should feed your roses water often, but lightly

Keep the area around your roses cleared to prevent them from getting locked in an area that doesn't provide enough circulation
