Valentine’s Day Pallet Art and Doily Mantel (tutorial)!!

Valentine’s Day is becoming one of my favorite holidays.

It makes January and February a little less dull and blah. So when the girls at Adorn It Fabric sent me their Happy Hearts Fat Quarter stack, I was excited to make something for Valentine’s Day.

I have seen so many great pallet projects around lately. And I had recently found some very rough boards on the side of the road. I decided to try my hand at making some pallet art for Valentine’s Day.

This is what I did:

I started off by cutting the boards into 35 inch-wide sections.
I had 4 boards and once I cut them in half I ended up with 8 boards.
I nailed a couple smaller boards on the back and then sanded it down a little to keep from getting too many splinters in my hands (I told you their were rough – LOL).

Then I painted the boards white. And printed off a little saying with my Silhouette. But if you don’t have a craft cutter, I think painted the words freehand and sanding them down would be pretty!

Then I took the Fat Quarters and made some hearts for a banner.
I sewed along the edges of the hearts and stuffed them with a little quilting stuffing.
I hot glued them onto some pretty Baker’s Twine and attached them to my board with a little hot glue, covered up with pretty upholstery tacks.

Next I made a little garland with Dollar Store heart doilies, .99 Valentine lights I picked up on clearance last year, some white cupcake liners and little rounds from the Adorn It fabric I cut out with my Big Shot Machine.

I glued the alternated between the heart doilies and the cupcake liners with a round piece of fabric inside. I glued them all to the lights. And Voila – a pretty little garland for my mantel.

The last thing I did was make a simple rag wreath with the left-over fabric. I tied strips onto a Dollar Store wreath. And then hung a little heart ornament inside.

Overall, a simple mantelscape, but one that coordinates and I love the twinkling lights. Makes me happy to see the bring colors in the middle of gloomy Winter weather!

Creating a Family Picture Wall — Step 1: The Placement

I have been wanting to make a Family Picture Wall for awhile now.

I loved Shelley’s colorful wall that she unveiled last year.

Over Thanksgiving we were able to book some time with my very-talented sister Wendy for a family photo shoot. I was so excited!! I wanted to get some really colorful family shots. My oldest son is a senior (where did the time go???) and I wanted to get a shot of the whole family before he left for college. So the day after thanksgiving we met at a deserted parking garage for some urban/suburban family shots.

I know I mentioned HP’s new Photo Creations free software program. I used it to create some large photo prints to use in the gallery wall that I am planning. The software is free to download. And you can make all sorts of great photo projects.

I have a place in my front hallway that I want to put this Family Picture Project:

I ordered a bunch of different sized prints from the photo shoot using the HP software. I also ordered them in Black and White for a photo project I am working on in my master bedroom redo.

And I ordered these whimsical unfinished frames for the project from Cut It Out. Amazing frames and amazing prices.

This is where I need your help….

Should I paint the frames all one color?
Or different shades of the same color?
And if so — aqua or grey??
Or should I paint them all white?
Or should I stencil them all in different geometric patterns in the same color scheme?

So many decisions!!!

I am so excited about this project.

I also ordered some things using HP’s free software — a unique mousepad, some luggage tags for us when we travel and a little keychain. So fun!!

Get Organized in 2012 — Make DIY Canvas Bow Basket Liners for under $5 each!!

I’m Stacie from The Three Sweet Peas — and I am glad to be back after a long winters nap, I had all of December off, no guest post, so I am thrilled to be sharing this DARLING TUTORIAL with each of you.

Make DIY Canvas Bow Basket Liners – perfect for organizing this year!!!

This should help with those organization projects that are BUZZING everywhere all over the internet. ..AND talk about inexpensive, the total cost of the project was under $5.00 for each basket liner, including the basket!!

You will need:

wire basket; from Sam’s Club under $4.00
fabric; I didn’t keep track but used, maybe, a 1/4 of a yard, I bought two yards total, but ended up using a fraction of the fabric
cardboard piece; same size as the bottom.

Let’s get this party started! You will measure the height, the length of both the long sides, the short sides, and the bottom, and give yourself a 1/2″ inch seam allowance on each side.

These are the exact measurements that I used for the Sam’s Club Basket, if you choose to purchase the same one, I would DEFINITELY double check the basket dimensions just to make sure they are the same sizes.

18″ Length x 10″ Height long sides x 2 {one for each side} – This will allow for a 1/2″ inseam.
11″ Length x 10″ Height short sides x 2 {one for each side} – This will allow for a 1/2″ inseam.
18″ Length x 11″ Width for the bottom – This will allow for 1/2 inch inseam.

Always double check your measurements, remember measure twice, cut once.

The seams will be on the inside of this basket.

You will pin a short end to a long end, right sides together. You will notice there will be fabric overhang. Match up each edge and then pin in two little tucks to create a small pleat.

Sew the edges together with a 1/2″ seam allowance.

You will repeat this same process four times, alternating short, long, short, long, the last step will be bringing the entire long strip of fabric together.

After the strips are sewn together you can now add the bottom of the basket. Match up the four corners with the seams on the short, long, short, long ends.

The liner is almost finished, just put a hem across the top that will be visible when you fold it over the metal part of the basket. The sewed a 1″ hem doubled so you cannot see the raw edge.

You are almost DONE, the last part is the ribbon or fabric strips (I used). I took eight 11″ x 2″ pieces and sewed two onto each corner. This will allow you to tie the basket liner to the basket. I left the edges raw no hemming.

From each corner I measured six inches down from the top and two inches out from the corner inseam. I turned the fabric under and ran a simple 1/2″ seam on each side, one on each corner and you are FINISHED!

CONGRATULATIONS, your adorable basket liner is ready to be placed and you spent under $5.00 including the basket!!

Put the basket liner in the basket and fold over the top wires, bring the ribbon around the outside of each wire and tie in a bow.

One last step because the basket isn’t a solid wire I placed a cardboard piece in the bottom of the basket liner.

Valentine Glitter Mason Jar Tutorial!!

Thanks for the nice comments on my Aqua and White Kitchen remodel. I am loving the lighter colors. Sorry my site was down some of the day yesterday.

Here’s a sparkly little Valentine idea.

Over Christmas I had seen some tutorials on making DIY glitter ornaments using floor wax.

I decided to try that with mason jars for Valentine’s Day. I discovered that floor wax might work great for ornaments, it does not work as well for votives with insides that might be touched — the glitter rubs off. So I experimented and found that the same technique can be used with polurethane instead of floor wax. Once the polurethane dries, it keeps the glitter on the mason jars. You can buy polyurethane at any hardware store.

Here’s what I did:

I used a few different sizes of mason jars. Plus some other sized jars like a pickle jar.

I took some vinyl (even shelf liner would work). I cut out heatrs of different size.

The next thing I did was stuck the vinyl hears inside of each of the jars, centering them in the middle of each jar.

Then I poured a little bit of the polyurethane into the jar and put the lid back on. Then I shook the polyurethane around in the jar until the whole jar was covered in polyurethane.

If there was a little extra polyurethane in the jar, I poured the excess into the next jar.

Then I poured glitter into the bottom of the jar and put the lid back on. Then shook the jar until glitter covered the inside. Next I took the lid off the jar and let it dry out overnight.

Once the polyurethane was dry, I peeled the heart off each of the jars.

The last thing I did was pour some Red Hot candies into the bottom of the jar and then I added a flameless votive tealight and lit it up.

*****NOTE — I had a reader ask about flamability with the tea lights and polyurethane. I didn’t even think of that. So to be safe, be sure to use FLAMELESS candles. You can buy them at the Dollar Store.

I love the way the light reflects off the glitter and shines through the heart opening in the mason jars.

And such an inexpensive way to add some festivity to your mantel or it would be so pretty on a Valentine’s Day Dinner Table!!

Aqua and White Kitchen Reveal!!

I love my new Aqua and White Kitchen.

I had white cabinets at my last house and loved them. For some reason I thought since this house was a little more rustic that a white kitchen wouldn’t work. But I am so happy with the way this remodel turned out.

Here’s what the kitchen looked like when we bought the house 10 years ago — Corian counters and lots of brass.

A few years later we added some granite counters and a rustic backsplash:

But it wasn’t quite what I wanted. I needed something a little lighter and brighter.

So this summer we started working on making a pretty big change. We painted the walls from brown to a light grey –

Sharkey Grey from Martha Stewart Paint via Home Depot. And painted over the backsplash tile. We used a special primer for tile first. And it looks so great.

We ended up painting the entire first floor, except for the living room that color. It’s such a pretty shade of grey and so neutral.And it makes the house seem so much lighter and brighter than the brown color did.

We also painted the little nook in our family room white and added some beadboard to the back. It’s a great place to display family pictures!

There are also a few other projects that I did along the way that added to this project, like my Aqua Door:

Just to let you know — we did pay someone to paint the cabinets. After painting my DIY Entertainment Unit, I knew I was way too anal to paint all of these cabinets myself.

So we hired a wonderful cabinet painter. He used a very high-tech spray gun with dyed polyurethane which is very durable and leaves no brush marks. I couldn’t be happier.

And now I have a bright & Happy kitchen/Family Room area.

It’s a great space to spend time as a family!!
