Art Show 2012 Continued!

I said that I would be back with the rest of the art show pictures!!

Here they are!!

First, of course you have to start with some snacks, there were fruit, sweets, chocolate fountain....

and veggies, cheese, dip, crackers, and toasted bread...

and some beverages, which also included wine ;)

Then there were the auction items, this and the food (and the art that you can read more about HERE) were my main responsibilities .. there was also the performance, ok most of the areas were my focus areas. There were 90 items/baskets and 7 raffles, I was so glad! This was the first time I have ever collected donations for something like this and I am glad it didn't fail!

I like how these simple dollar store frames really make everything uniform and tie it all together. Plus it was interesting going through and buying 101 frames at the dollar store lol.

There were 3 tables with 30 items each!

We also sold pictures of the kids dressed up in clothes from the different decades- look who got to be used as a display/example photo!! ADORABLE!!

I was so tired but I am glad it was a success!

2$ Tape Stenciled Ombre Door Mat

Are you noticing a theme?

Spray paint, tape stencils and ombre?

Yeah, I had a spray paint filled weekend thanks to my fabulous Mother's day present!! (It was 12 cans of spray paint!!)

Nothing was safe! I went to Big Lots to grab some staples and came across this mat for $2! No brainer. Honestly it may be for the bathroom, but there is an overhang over our porch and it is summer so it is really for looks because there isn't going to be any heavy mud tracking. If there is, who cares, it was $2, I can just make another one!

I had the masking tape on hand but I picked that up at the dollar store so if you have to buy it, it would just be another buck.

I started at one of the corners and started making a geometric type pattern.

And kept on going...

And going...

Until I was done!

Then I made sure to tape off the edges.

Then I grabbed the spray paint, I used 4 colors. I started with the lightest yellow at the beginning of the tape, then went to the yellow/orange, then the orange and last the dark red.

I let it dry and then put it on the porch! It is a fun little pop of color... I need to do something about that mail box, as I look at this picture, it needs to be taken care of.

Fun and bright!

Folding Chair Makeover

We all have some ugly folding chairs in the garage. I break them out and cringe at all the big functions and I thought, why? Why don't I just make them better?

So I did. Plus I just grabbed everything I had around my house to do it!

Here is the before and after! Well I guess, after and before.

So much better!!

Let's get to how I did it, first I had to take apart the pad and the chair frame. For mine it was just a few screws.

Fabulous fabric huh? Not really.

Then I grabbed the black spray paint and gave the frame a couple of coats.

I found some cloth napkins that had a few stains on them that were the perfect size for the pad on the chair so all I had to do was iron them flat.

Then I just grabbed some masking tape I bought at the dollar store and taped off diagonal lines that were a tape width apart.

Then I painted with some black fabric paint I had on hand.

When it was dry, I pulled the tape off and it came out pretty well!

Then I placed the chair pad on the napkin upside down and stapled all around!

After it was all stapled I just had to add the pad back in and screw it down and I was done!

So. Much. Better.

BLOGGY OLYMPICS!!!

Guess what?! The 2012 Summer Olympics are coming soon and we are so excited! To help get in the spirit of the Olympics and to add a bloggy spin of our own, we will be hosting a 6 week Bloggy Olympics!

There will be 17 different blogs participating over 6 weeks and 6 events from June 9th-July 21st. Each week 3 blogs will share a simple tutorial that you can copy or will get you thinking about that event's theme. At the end of the week they will host a 3 blog linky party for you to link up your finished even projects. And of course there will be features, giveaways and fun Olympic Stuff!

The Open Ceremony begins Thursday , June 7th and runs until Friday, June 8th at midnight. Come link up your blog if you are planning on joining in an event for the "Bloggy Olympics". In order for you to get to know a little more about me, if you are new to my little corner of the bloggy hood, here are 10 facts, some random, about me:

1. I am married to a very handsome man named Wade. I have a beautiful feisty 2 year old daughter named Avery. We also are caregivers to young gentleman with Autism named Scott who lives with us who is pretty much family.

2. I am a toddler teacher when I am not a Stay at Home Mom.

3. I am a graduate student working on a MA in Early Childhood Education.

4. I coupon like a crazy person and walk around the grocery store with a huge binder of coupons, yup, I am that person.

5. I think most problems can be solved with hot glue.

6. I am incredibly ~~cheap~~ frugal, you probably got that from the couponing but it goes into every part of life.

7. I don't believe in trash cans in my home. I use a garbage bowl and take trash out multiple times a day (yup, I am a freak).

8. I don't like cheese (we already covered that I am a freak).

9. Someday I want to be a published author.

10. I recently have been incredibly into party planning and hope to do much more of it.

So there you go, me in a nutshell. Let's get back to the whole Bloggy Olympics thing, I am lucky enough to be apart of the first even, decorating which is the week of June 9th. Under $25 Craft Organization

I have been going back and forth with the organization for my craft area because technically, where I work, is supposed to be a desk for both Wade and me... but the crafts took over.

So, I finally accepted this and started to add some organizational elements to the corner near the desk, ,but since this is our living room, it has to at least be cute!

What do you think?

Thank you to Goodwill, Michaels with coupons and spray paint. They were the major players in keeping this affordable.

I am finding this is a good place to organize some of the stuff that takes up bins and can then organize other stuff that is awkwardly shaped into the now empty bins.

Here is the first find, I bought this shelf at Goodwill for $5.99, already white. But here is the best part, on the back there is a sticker that says "Pottery Barn"... you know it wasn't $6 at Pottery Barn, score!

On the left is a drawer organizer I bought at Goodwill for $2.99 that was wood, just a coat of spray paint later, it matches everything else. The Washi Tape Organization from 3 min egg wall hangers that I found at Goodwill for $1.99 I did a tutorial on that you can find HERE.

The frame is a laser cut wood frame that I found at Michaels for $7.99 but then used a 40% off coupon on to make it cheaper. More on that simple transition to the photo holder at the end.

Last is the little wooden shelf at the bottom that I also picked up at Goodwill for $1.99 and spray painted white. Woo to the hoo for spray paint!

It started out empty ...

And got filled up! I think I am going to sew some sort of simple organizer for the rod on the bottom of the Pottery Barn shelf, still thinking on that one.

Back to that frame, I just cut some wire to fit the width and hot glued each end to the back of the frame after I spray painted it white.

Then I used two large command strips to hold it on the wall and added some mini clothespins, simple!!

Butterfly Bow Holder

I have been really making an effort this year to make all the birthday gifts for the forty eleven birthday parties that we have been attending.

I feel like it is a win/win/win: I get to make something, my friends get something thoughtful and homemade and usually it is more affordable than a store bought gift.

What I don't spend in money, I spend in time :).

Here is the bow holder I made for Avery's friends second birthday.

I called the mom, also my friend, and asked about room decor colors and patterns and that is where I got the pink with yellow butterflies- really Avery picked the yellow, not surprising, everything Avery picks is yellow these days. It went great with her room!

Giving a bow holder without at bow is like giving someone an empty purse, just not right.

Photo Frame {Personal Crafter Project}

I have mentioned before that occasionally I get given an "assignment" and asked to make something for a friend or family member.

I think this is great because it makes me think outside the box or allows me to make something I have seen around but haven't come across the materials for myself.

This was the later, the director at the preschool I work at sent me an email to check out this framed turned into a photo holder. She said she had a mirror and asked if I could make it happen.

Of course! There were two awesome things about this, first, I got to finally make one of these and second, the blog that she found it on and sent me the link to is an amazing one that I wasn't currently reading!

She sent me a link from Goodwillionaire and how cute of a name and blog concept is that!!

Seriously, check it out, great blog.

Here is my version for my boss.

I started with a mirror so I had to break it down a bit before I could start making the photo frame. Here is the view from the back.

And the front, it was a tinged silver color to start with:

I grabbed some pliers and took out all the staples holding the back cardboard into the frame, they looked like the kind on the back of a picture frame that you would whip out the butter knife for, does that make sense?

Then I took off the wire hanger for the painting process. I re attached it later and hooked it to the corners so you couldn't see it when it hung up.

After it was all dismantled I gave it a coat of white spray paint.

I also pray painted the little clothes pins, thanks Goodwillionaire for the idea!

They didn't have the right color in spray paint at the craft store when I went so I grabbed acrylic, I would suggest spray paint because it is easier and faster but this worked and I was able to get it done pretty quickly with a few coats. It is the kind of project you come back to in the garage a few times throughout the evening.

Then I applied the wires with screws, check out Goodwillionaire for more pictures about that.

I just hung it on a random nail in my entry way to get a picture, this is obviously not a forever home seeing as how it isn't mine and I wouldn't hang it half covering my light switches LOL.

It came out great, was fun to make and my director was really happy with it, yay!!

"Craft" Trifecta

So you know there are things that have been really trendy that get stuck in your head and you have to try, right?

Then I get conflicted because generally I get on bandwagons late because, I don't know, it is my own trend? And posting them seems redundant.

There are two new techniques I have been wanting to try and one I have done many times before but wanted to have a new twist on.

I have been really interested in the look of the nail and string art and the ombre color effect. Originally I just thought of doing it separately but then, but THEN, I thought "huh, that would be cute together on those little scrap pieces of wood that I have that were going to spell some five letter word"

Yeah, sorry my brain can be a scary, spastic place, sometimes I think it looks like if you hyped up a ping pong ball and set it free in a room with no windows or doors.

BUT ANYWAYS. Here is where that mind ramble got me:

What do you think? I was pretty excited because it is like the crafting trifecta and also, because I have not seen this combination around. I am not saying it isn't, I just haven't seen it.

I am sure the whole idea is pretty self explanatory so here is a quick tutorial if you still need it:

First grab your scrap wood, if you want to sand it, do that first, I liked the non sanded look for this project. Then get your spray paint, you could use acrylic but spray paint is faster and easier. I used a darker teal, lighter teal and white.

I started at the bottom with the darkest color and spray painted straight across all the blocks. Then the middle and then the lighter.

After that I cut out my letters and traced them on the blocks.

Then I added in the mini nails.

And started stringing! I just tied my crochet thread to one nail and then wrapped until the whole letter was outlined and filled in.

When I was done, I just tied the end to the leftover from the beginning and trimmed the rest.

Tea Cup Flower

This one should have been shared last week with all the other tea party stuff, but I didn't have a picture of the final product to share. I was so concerned with making sure I left the party with all my stuff and cleaned up, I forgot the art project!!

Here was the finished craft/party favor the kids got to take home from the party:

I picked up some tea cups from Goodwill and some stickers from either the craft store or the dollar store. Then the children got to pick a flower and plant it in the cup with some soil! It was really sweet and went over great! If you trust your kids with Sharpies, that could be fun too!

Tea Party for 2 {Year Old Birthday}

I have had a couple of posts hinting to a Tea Party birthday I did for a friend and today I thought that I would finally share the photos from the party!

This is the first birthday party I have done for another child and it came out great!!

Here is the main food table, there were chocolate covered strawberries, cream cheese and jelly and cream cheese and cucumber tea sandwiches, chocolate dipped marshmallows and sugar wafers and scones. YUM!

That lace overlay was actually cream colored until I spray painted it to match the pink and white and turquoise decor.

Here is the iced tea bar, there were 4 different flavors of tea, lemonade, and water. There were also orange and lime slices, sugar cubes and raspberries to add into the tea to get all fancy.

These are those fun cupcake liner balls, like the wreaths only scrunched and hot glued to a ball.

The craft was a planting activity. The kids got to put stickers all over their tea cups and then plant a flower inside, it came out adorably!

On that table, I just hot glued flowers to large claw clips and gathered the table cloth to make the plastic table cloth look a little fancier. There are two table cloths, I wanted a white one with a pink one on top but I couldn't find pink ones in round. The white on white still looks great too!
