- A virtual machine (VM) is an environment, usually a program or operating system, which does not physically exist but is created within another environment. In this context, a VM is called a "guest" while the environment it runs within is called a "host." Virtual machines are often created to execute an instruction set different than that of the host environment. One host environment can often run multiple VMs at once. Because VMs are separated from the physical resources they use, the host environment is often able to dynamically assign those resources among them.

The phrase "virtual machine" is commonly used to describe Sun Microsystems' Java runtime environment, the Java virtual machine (JVM), in which Java-specific commands are interpreted. The JVM is a virtual machine in that it executes code compiled specifically for it – known as bytecode – and abstracts use of resources for this bytecode. The Java programming language does not rely on platform-specific instruction sets, such as APIs specific to any one operating system, to display output or access resources such as files. Instead, the JVM creates virtualized resources which the bytecode accesses. These actions are then passed on to the machine's actual resources.
A user interacting with a virtualized server can view the server as a physical machine, in the sense that the user would see access to machines resources like hard disks, RAM, processors and Ethernet connections. In fact, all of these machine resources are virtual. For instance, instead of accessing a real hard disk, the user is accessing a construct of the host environment. This construct then accesses the real disk to record the data.

Mistry demonstrates SixthSense

The basic idea of augmented reality is to superimpose graphics, audio and other sensory enhancements over a real-world environment in real time. Sounds pretty simple. Besides, haven't television networks been doing that with graphics for decades? However, augmented reality is more advanced than any technology you've seen in television broadcasts, although some new TV effects come close, such as RACEf/x and the super-imposed first down line on televised U.S. football games, both created by Sportvision. But these systems display graphics for only one point of view. Next-generation augmented-reality systems will display graphics for each viewer's perspective.
Some of the most exciting augmented-reality work is taking place in research labs at universities around the world. In February 2009, at the TED conference, Pattie Maes and Pranav Mistry presented their augmented-reality system, which they developed as part of MIT Media Lab's Fluid Interfaces Group. They call it SixthSense, and it relies on some basic components that are found in many augmented reality systems:

Camera
Small projector
Smartphone
Mirror

These components are strung together in a lanyardlike apparatus that the user wears around his neck. The user also wears four colored caps on the fingers, and these caps are used to manipulate the images that the projector emits.
SixthSense is remarkable because it uses these simple, off-the-shelf components that cost around $350. It is also notable because the projector essentially turns any surface into an interactive screen. Essentially, the device works by using the camera and mirror to examine the surrounding world, feeding that image to the phone (which processes the image, gathers GPS coordinates and pulls data from the Internet), and then projecting information from the projector onto the surface in front of the user, whether it's a wrist, a wall, or even a person. Because the user is wearing the camera on his chest, SixthSense will augment whatever he looks at; for example, if he picks up a can of soup in a grocery store, SixthSense can find and project onto the soup information about its ingredients, price, nutritional value -- even customer reviews.
By using his capped fingers -- Pattie Maes says even fingers with different colors of nail polish would work -- a user can perform actions on the projected information, which are then picked up by the camera and processed by the phone. If he wants to know more about that can of soup than is projected on it, he can use his fingers to interact with the projected image and learn about, say, competing brands. SixthSense can also recognize complex gestures -- draw a circle on your wrist and SixthSense projects a watch with the current time.

Electrostatic (E) field sensors

Electrostatic (E) field sensors are employed in many applications either as stand-alone devices or as components of more complex measurement systems. Common applications of E-field sensors are in monitoring of fields generated by atmospheric phenomena, particle detectors, mass spectrometers, scanning microscopes and electrophoresis systems, and the assessing of phenomena involving static charges either in processing and storage of inflammable materials or in the production of electronic devices. In the automotive industry, active and passive safety systems (e.g. air bags) and occupant sensing systems are equipped with E-Field sensors. In general, the measurement of electrostatic fields requires no contact with a surface to avoid surface discharging and electrical potential changes. Non-contacting instruments are commonly classified as electrostatic-field meters (ESFMs) and electrostatic-volt meters (ESVMs).

This project is designed to make home automation easy to control when a user is not at home. The project is designed to allow easy use of a mobile phone to control appliances in the home. Using a mobile phone the development of the control system will be carried out using SMS. This will communicate with another mobile phone, which in turn controls the devices attached to microcontroller modules. When the action has been carried out then a response is sent to the user. The project involves three main areas, research, development\programming, testing and the writing of the report.

The project is aimed at developing and testing the use of mobile phones to remotely control an appliance control system. The microcontroller would then control an device based on the information given to it. The proposed solution will need to be easy to use, simple, secure, robust and be useful on most mobile phones. To achieve this testing will need to be carried out to create a useful system.

The report consists of a background into the area of 8051 microcontroller and mobile communication, how they are interfaced to each other and AT (Attention) commands set used in communication.

The development of a medical robot that remains in the abdominal cavity in order to monitor sites of medical interest, and discusses robot travel operations

and specifications. A long and narrow piece of ferromagnetic material was placed inside the robot, after which an external magnetic field was used to set the robot in motion.

A prototype robot was developed and experiments were conducted in order to verify the proposed concept and the drive principles of the robot. In vivo experiments in a rabbit model showed that solenoids produced sufficient magnetic force to enable the robot

to travel through the abdominal cavity, verifying the motion principles. The appropriate shape of the robot was confirmed in the experiments, and the friction between the robot and the organs and the abdominal wall was measured. Using a modified prototype of the robot, clinical experiments were conducted out in the rabbit model in which a surgeon

operated the XYZ axis stages in order to adjust the position of the subject for the experiment and moved the robot to the liver. Robot travel from the insertion point to the liver was verified on X-rays. The long travel distance of the robot was enabled by

its improved shape and through the use of accurate magnetic field imaging.
