GMC will bring Denali bling, bells, and whistles to its crossover Acadia this fall after its debut at the 2010 Detroit show with a choice of either front- or all-wheel-drive, bearing the familiar drilled chrome grilles, Xenon headlamps, monochrome fascias and cladding, chrome accents and special 20-inch chromed wheels with black-chrome centers.
Inside the 2011 GMC Acadia Denali, there's a mahogany steering wheel, perforated leather heated and cooled front seats, head-up display, dual sunroof, tri-zone climate control, special footwell lighting, chromed sill plates with red light-up Denali badging, and most every other creature comfort you can imagine (rear-seat entertainment remains optional).

A more meaningful upgrade is fitment of most of the Enclave's quiet tuning elements (extra mastic, triple seals, and acoustic windshield-the front door glass is not acoustic, as the Acadia's windows are a different shape). Maximum towing capacity is a class-leading 5200 pounds. Expect the price jump to be less than the $15K leap from Yukon SLE to Denali.
The Acadia Denali will be available in front- and all-wheel drive, and seven- and eight-passenger configurations. The standard engine is GM's ever-present 3.6L direct-injected V-6, and maximum towing capacity is 5200 lbs. The Acadia gets a suspension retune to compensate for larger diameter wheels and available all-wheel drive. The EPA's fuel economy ratings don't change: 17/24 mpg for the front-drive models, while all-wheel drive knocks 1 mpg off both ends.

The U.S. Focus is dead. Next year, Ford obliterates the heaviest complaint levied at its lineup. Next year, Ford gives us a European Focus.
Well, it's technically a global car. As a 2012 model, the third-generation Focus, whether in four-door sedan or five-door hatchback form, will be nearly identical in all markets. Ford's European small and medium vehicle center in Germany led development. Powertrain engineering occurred in Ford's technical center in England. Ford put its European driving dynamics specialists in charge of ride and handling. This is as European as it gets.

But there's better news: Ford says it's using identical chassis and suspension architecture in all markets, except for minor regional tuning differences. That means the torque vectoring Dynamic Cornering Control system -- added by those special driving dynamics folk -- is coming our way. It transfers power between the drive wheels to reduce understeer, and improve traction and turn-in.
The rear suspension is an updated version of the independent multi-link (Ford calls it "Control Blade") found in previous Focus models. Torsional rigidity is up 25% over the current North American Focus, thanks to extensive use of high-strength steel (comprising 55% of the body shell). Ultra-high-strength and Boron steels account for 26%. Ford says these materials help the Focus meet crash legislation across world markets and minimize vehicle weight.

With a bore of 92.2mm and a stroke of 92.7mm, the high-tech DOHC 32-valve engine under the hood of the 2011 Ford Mustang GT making its debut at the 2010 Detroit show displaces 4951cc. That figure legitimately rounds to 5.0 liters, unlike the 4942cc displacement of its pushrod predecessor. That overgenerous rounding drove some of us persnickety engineering types crazy for all those years, so right off the bat we're inclined more favorably toward this new V-8. Indeed there is a lot to like about this high-tech engine, starting with its output figures: 412 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque (on recommended but not required premium fuel, slightly less on regular no-lead).
Designed according to best-practices established in the design of the 3.5 and 3.7-liter V-6s as well as the 6.2-liter V-8, the Mustang GT's new 5.0 boasts cam-torque actuated variable valve-timing on the intake and exhaust cams plus a long-runner single-scroll intake manifold and tubular stainless headers to optimize breathing. Moving the alternator out of the valley opened up space for the 80mm throttle body to breathe directly into the larger intake manifold. To cope with the engine's 11:1 compression and high combustion stresses, the crank is forged steel and fully counterweighted, using forged powdered-metal connecting rods, floating wrist pins, and hypereutectic pistons cooled by oil jets. The bulkheads are also 2mm wider and the six main bearing bolts are larger than those in the 4.6. This is reportedly as large a displacement as this architecture can handle with the 1.2mm cylinder liners and the current deck height (a slightly larger bore could be accommodated by switching to a spray-lined cylinder design).

The unique new cylinder heads will not bolt up to earlier 4.6s. The exhaust cam has been moved down and outboard, so the intake cam could also move outboard a bit for a more vertical intake valve geometry. Extremely light valves and compact roller finger followers permit the engine to rev to the speeds of 7000 rpm. To cope with the extreme g-loading experienced on a track and enable a 10,000-mile oil-change interval, the oil capacity has been increased to eight quarts. Extensive baffling and redesigned oil return galleys ensure that the cylinder head oil drains and the oil pump pickup is supplied even at sustained 1g lateral loads.

Fiat took an interest in Chrysler, many figured it wouldn't be long before Chrysler-branded Fiat products would show up in the U.S. Now, the first one is here. Fiat subsidiary Lancia has rebranded its Delta hatchback as a Chrysler for the 2010 Detroit Auto Show.
We heard a few weeks ago that the rebranding of Lancia vehicles was a possibility, but we were still pleasantly surprised to see a new model on Chrysler's stand next to a handful of badge-only special editions. In all that domestic rebadging, though, no one seems to have come up with a new name for the Delta. For now, it's simply known as the Chrysler Lancia. From the looks of things, it's a Lancia Delta with new-age Chrysler badges and a Chrysler corporate grille, and truth be told, it doesn't look that bad.
The real question is what this car represents. It very well could be a peek into the future Chrysler lineup, one populated with Fiat models. On the other hand, it could also be a look at Fiat's strategy to rebrand some its models worldwide as Chryslers thanks to the American brand's better name recognition in some markets. For its part, Chrysler isn't saying why it's here, but it's a good bet that they're testing the waters in Detroit for Italian rebadges.

General Motors is firing back. The new Chevrolet Cruze debuted last month at the Los Angeles auto show; the Spark is on its way; and Chevrolet is completing the trifecta with the Aveo RS show car, a thinly veiled preview of the long-awaited Aveo replacement.
Knowing full well that the replacement needed to greatly improve upon the existing Aveo, Chevrolet has made the new hatchback wider, longer, and more spacious that the one it will replace. For the show car, Chevy has gone all out with special design cues including big front fender flares, extra-large brake cooling ducts with pushed-out fog lights, and big air inlets trimmed in both brushed and polished aluminum.

Other elements are more likely to make it to the production car, including the exposed, aluminum-trimmed headlights and round taillights, elements Chevy says were inspired by motorcycles. Turn signals integrated into the mirrors, and rear door handles tucked into the C-pillars, are also likely to carry over to the production model. The chrome, center-exit exhaust tips, racy roof spoiler, and aluminum-trimmed, tinted tail lights are a bit less likely.
While some of these bits might not be found on the production car, they may be available as accessories. Chevy says it's targeting younger buyers and enthusiasts and hopes to hook them with the kinds of personalization options that have been such a hit for small-car competitors Scion and Kia. For the show car, Chevy even crafted a special silver engine cover with aluminum accents flanked by wheel-colored honeycomb grilles, and blue-rimmed coolant and power steering caps. The company hasn't said yet which, if any, of these show car items will actually be offered as factory or dealer upgrades.

the XTS Platinum concept car, Cadillac aims to re-imagine "the luxury sedan as a personal headquarters." At an inch longer than the Escalade Platinum Hybrid, and 2.3-in wider and 1.1-in taller than the CTS, the large luxury sedan is a rolling showcase for the brand's Art and Science design language and a probable direction of its future production cars.
Modeled after the Platinum philosophy, the XTS features hand cut-and-sewn interior. Dark materials adorn the steering wheel and overhead compartment, contrasting against the prominent light cream interior color. The dash is a harbinger of the future of in-car electronics for the Cadillac brand. Organic Light-Emitting Diode (O-LED) displays replace the traditional gauges and screens, while the deployable touch-screen navigation system supplants the majority of buttons and switches on the dash. The panels appear black until the car is started; a "dead front" design, as dubbed by the designers, that aims to give the dash a flowing appearance.
The exterior "is the antithesis of the conventional three-box sedan, suggesting the active evolution of Cadillac's design language," according to design director Clay Dean. It features a sweeping profile and angled beltline to suggest forward motion. Vertical lamps sit at all four corners, while the lights up front receive adaptive lighting that adjusts direction depending on the angle of the front wheels.
Under hood is a paring of General Motors' direct-injected 3.6L V-6 and a plug-in hybrid system. The combination makes an estimated 350-hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, and can propel the XTS under electric power alone. When plugged into a power outlet, GM says the battery can recharge in about five hours. The engine routes power to all four 20-in wheels, which are wrapped in Bridgestone rubber. Widely believed to be underpinned by GM's front drive-based Epsilon II platform, the XTS also features magnetic ride control, using shocks that are capable of adjusting damping in indiscernible amounts of time.

Cadillac CTS-V sedan worked darn well. So with the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe, which enters production this summer after its debut at the 2010 Detroit show, General Motors isn't straying far from its proven modus operandi. This CTS-V variant merges the bountiful abilities of the performance sedan with the coupe's unabashed design.
So what's different? Beyond losing two doors, the CTS-V Coupe shrinks in length and height by 2 inches compared to the sedan. It shares the sedan's 113.4-in. wheelbase, but its rear track is about an inch wider. Cadillac says the Coupe's sleek shape and slightly lower mass ensures "a similarly high level of performance."

The requisite CTS-V bodywork dons the Coupe's nose and tail. Additions include a larger grille that doubles air intake, says GM, a bulge in the hood that makes room for the supercharger, and a center-mounted exhaust with two outlets poking out the back. The rest of the details come from the standard CTS Coupe, including the touch-pad actuated doors, a dramatically angled windshield (62.3 degrees), a near horizontal rear window, vertical tail lamps with LEDs, a center lamp that acts as a rear spoiler, and the absence of a conventional B-pillar.

we took a spin in the Opel Insignia OPC (which stands, not too imaginatively, for Opel Performance Content), the highest performing model in the extensive and lauded Insignia lineup. We posited that car might point the way toward the revival of a Buick performance subbrand like T-Type. Well, now we know it's likely to be called GS if the Buick Regal GS show car bowing at the 2010 Detroit show is any indication, though it's still not confirmed for production. Most of the content is lifted directly from the OPC, from the aggressive restyled fascias with vertical air inlets in front, dual exhaust outlets and a diffuser in back, as well as unique rocker panels, integrated rear spoiler, and special Olympic White paint. The jet-black interior features Recaro seats with white stitching, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and piano-black trim.
Mechanical upgrades borrowed from Opel include 20-inch forged wheels, vented and drilled Brembo brakes with 14 x 1.2-inch vented and cross-drilled front rotors, four-piston, high-strength aluminum calipers, and high-performance pads. An adjustable suspension lowers the body by 0.4 inch and features HiPerStruts in front that help reduce torque steer and maintain negative camber during cornering for improved grip, improving road feel and reducing undesirable feedback in bumpy corners. The Interactive Drive Control System (also available on Regal CXL 2.0L turbo models) delivers enhanced vehicle stability and greater driving safety, while also adapting the damping and driving characteristics to the driver's preferences. Normal, sport, and GS modes tailor the suspension settings, throttle response, shift pattern, and steering sensitivity through the variable-effort steering system.
The big difference relative to the OPC is replacement of that car's 2.8-liter turbocharged 321-horsepower, 321-pound-foot V-6 with a higher-output version of the 2.0-liter turbo that's expected to produce at least 255 horses and 295 pound-feet. That abundant force is routed through a six-speed manual to a Haldex all-wheel-drive system that includes an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential. Why ditch the six? According to Craig Bierley, product marketing director for Buick, that engine would likely incur a gas-guzzler penalty, and in any case, the design brief was to build a car that could accelerate to 60 mph in the fives, and the 2.0T was easily able to accomplish that while achieving considerably better fuel economy than the V-6.
Bierley also assured us that the rock-hard damper tuning of the IDCS system's OPC setting (now GS) would be softened just a bit for the U.S. market. Trust us -- this is a good thing in a country that maintains its roadways so much worse than the Germans do. Only the Insignia's normal setting felt tolerable, Sport prompted minor kidney trauma, and when in OPC (the max setting) one fears that conversation might imperil one's tongue. We're also hopeful that Buick will tune the four-cylinder's exhaust to eliminate the annoying drone we recently experienced in the OPC at 2000 rpm. Grip from the Pirelli PZeros was impressive back in November, and we expect much the same from the new 245/35/ZR20 Bridgestones. The steering feedback, braking feel and performance, and general chassis poise felt equal with the German sport-sedan competitive set on the Opel Insignia, and the same should hold true for the Regal GS. It will admittedly take some work to get the driving public to consider a Buick competitive with an A4 Quattro, but the first step is delivering the goods.

Straight-six power is making a return to the U.S.-spec 2011 BMW 7 Series with its 740i and 740Li models, which will bow at the 2010 Detroit show. Housing the German automaker's twin-turbocharged, direct-injection 3.0L inline-six engine under the hood, the new 7 Series variant will output 315 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque (15 hp and 30 lb-ft more than in the 335i) when it hits showrooms next spring. The eight-cylinder 750i and 750Li will continue to be sold alongside the six-cylinder model.
The 2011 740i and Li models will feature an adaptive six-speed automatic transmission and brake energy regeneration to further boost the car's efficiency. According to BMW, the new engine and transmission will allow for a V-8-like driving experience, but with improved fuel economy. Both the 740i and Li will be available with all of the current option packages, including the M Sport Package, Driver Assistance Package, Luxury Seating Packages, Rear Entertainment Package, and BMW Individual Composition Package.
The last 7 Series model to offer a six-cylinder option in the U.S. was the 218-hp 1992 735i and iL, while the original 7 Series -- the 733i -- launched in the U.S. in 1977 exclusively with a 3.2L I-6 that produced 197 hp.
BMW says pricing for the 2011 740i and 740Li will be announced at a later date.

next chapter in its EfficientDynamics program calls for a new all-electric vehicle to complement its current fleet of leased Mini E electric subcompacts. To accomplish its self-prescribed mission, it enlisted the help of the 1 Series coupe and a revised synchronous electric motor to create a new show car called the Concept ActiveE. It's the epitome of electromobility in the true BMW sense, the automaker claims, and with the Mini E, continues to pave the way towards the ultimate goal of a mass-produced 'Megacity Vehicle'.
The heart of the concept is, of course, its electric powertrain. Engineers designed the unit to replace the 1 Series' combustion engine, fuel tank, drivetrain, and rear axle. The actual motor is enclosed in the would-be differential casing, while the lithium-ion battery modules take the place of the propshaft and also fit snugly under the front hood. ActiveE keeps the 1 Series's rear-wheel drive layout, as well as its 50/50 weight distribution, and combined with the instantaneous high torque of the new motor, promises to live up to the brand's distinct driving spirit.
Making a grand total of 170 horsepower and 184 foot-pounds of torque, the motor was built to provide generous amounts of grunt at high road and engine speeds. That's in addition to the Concept ActiveE's immediacy of power, as in other EVs. The electric powertrain has been tuned to behave similar to that of a combustion engine, by reducing torque gradually under high load, rather than abruptly. BMW points out that the 3900-lb. car can hit 60 mph in around 8.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of 90 mph.

Samsung's SB LiMotive partnered with engineers in Munich to develop the innovative power supply. Their lithium ion battery cells are grouped into compact modules that utilize individual liquid cooling systems to boost the vehicle's 100-mile single-charge range. Thanks to the battery's intuitive management control unit, users have the flexibility to charge their vehicle at any number of outlets, regardless of voltage or amperage. The control unit calculates power conversions and allows the batteries to charge at a fast pace. Engineers have quoted 3 hours to fully charge the units while plugged into a 230/240 volt European-spec outlet. On a more North American-like 32 amp plug, it'll take 4.5 hours.

BMW has officially taken the wraps off its 2011 BMW Z4 sDrive35is -- a range-topping model of the Z4 lineup that's set to make its world debut at the 2010 Detroit auto show.
While we'd prefer they'd call it Z4 M (it's a lot easier to pronounce, forone), we're not going to argue with the upgrades to the automaker's twin-turbo 3.0-liter I-6. Mainly through changes to the turbocharger system, the engine now outputs 335 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque - a healthy increase over the 300-hp, 300 lb-ft output in the Z4 sDrive35i. In addition, there's also a controlled overboost function that briefly increases torque by another 37 lb-ft.
The updates to the engine will push the Z4 sDrive35is from 0 to 60 in 4.7 seconds onto an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph, according to BMW. The power bump won't come with a corresponding decrease in fuel efficiency, either, as BMW estimates the sDrive35is will roughly match the efficiency of the sDrive35i equipped with the automaker's 7-speed DCT transmission.
Speaking of the DCT, BMW claims both the transmission and the automaker's electric power steering system have both been optimized to further enhance the sporting character of the car. In addition, the exhaust system of the Z4 sDrive35is has been fitted with new mufflers and baffles designed to give it a deeper rumble especially under hard acceleration.
While they aren't calling it a Z4 M, the sDrive35is comes with a host of BMW M Sport upgrades. The automaker's adaptive M Suspension for the Z4 is fitted to the car, which features a reduction of overall ride height by roughly a quarter inch, along with a set of electronically controlled shocks. The car's M Aerodynamics kit employs a number of exterior enhancements to the front bumper and rear fascia, and a rear diffuser has been added. Special, five spoke 18-in. alloy rims are standard equipment, with 19-in. alloys available as an option.
The M treatment continues on the inside, with numerous enhancements including the awesome, thick-rimmed M steering wheel, sport seats and other model specific touches including BMW's new Aluminum Carbon interior trim. The sDrive35is also marks the debut of a new leather color called Kansas Walnut, and the car will be available in six colors including Melbourne Red metallic, a new hue for the Z4.
So far, no word on pricing, but expect it to scrape up near the $60,000 range when it goes on sale sometime next spring.

Audi launched its all-new 2011 Audi A8 at the Fountainbleu Hotel in Miami Beach, where the automaker is a major sponsor of Art Basel December 3-9, the sister event of a show in Switzerland. Actress Lucy Liu emceed the gala.

The Audi A8 launches in North America about this time next year, a few months after the summer '10 release in Europe. While Western Europe gets a 3.0-liter TDI V-6, a 3.2-liter FSI V-6, and 4.2-liter turbodiesel and gas direct-injection V-8s, we get the car only with that latter engine, upgraded to 372 horsepower and 328 pound-feet.
The direct injection allows a 12.5:1 compression ratio and Audi's "modular efficiency system" converts kinetic energy to electric power, buffered in the battery, upon deceleration. A computer monitors actuators for the ideal distribution of the heat flows between the engine, transmission and interior. At cold start, the system uncouples the engine temporarily from the cooling circuit to shorten the warm-up phase with its high friction losses.
The 4.2 may be a short-termer, however. Audi is preparing a supercharged 4.0-liter V-8 gas direct-injection engine to supplement, for the time being, the 4.2. While we don't have a timeline, an insider assures us it comes very soon after the luxury flagship's launch. Also rumored to be in the pipeline is a hybrid model.
The power is transmitted through a new eight-speed automatic to the quattro all-wheel-drive system. Audi claims a 0-62 mph time of 5.7 seconds and an electronically controlled top speed of 250 kp/h, or, in the automaker's exactitude, 155.34 mph.
The dynamic shift program now networks with the optional MMI navigation plus system to anticipate curves in its gearshift strategy and avoid unnecessary gear changes. Taking a swipe at BMW's and Mercedes' modern gearshifts, the A8 comes with a selector lever on the center tunnel, shaped like the thrust lever of a yacht. You can change gears with a quick tap of the lever, or use the rocker switches on the steering wheel.

Its structure and form remains identical to last year's car, but now receives a larger front grille that's flanked by slimmer projector headlights. Its foglights get new encasings and additional chrome outlines the greenhouse and chiseled skirts. To the rear, its dual exhaust integrates smoothly into the bolder diffuser, while a sculpted trunk lid gives the hindquarters more pizazz. Taillights now incorporate LED elements and encompass the reverse and turn signals into one sleeker package. The fresh wheel designs add to the model's new look.
Much time was taken to revamp its interior as well. New color choices and premium touch points aim to uplift the sedan close to the luxury echelon. Two trim levels -- Avalon and Limited -- are available and come standard with an eight-way power driver seat, backup camera, dual zone climate control, moonroof, and 17-inch wheels. Step up to the Limited and a power passenger seat, driver seat cushion extension, rain sensing wipers, smart key, and cooled seats are included in the standard features list. Optional on both is a JBL Synthesis sound system, heated seats, and navigation.
Passengers are also welcomed by standard Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, USB and auxiliary ports, and as we just mentioned, a revised DVD-based navigation. The nav's maps and usability are said to be easier and quicker to use. More backseat room is attained thanks to enlarged reclinable seats. For added convenience, there's an electronically controlled rear window shade.
The sole engine option -- a 3.5-liter V-6 VVT-I -- remains in place but is tuned for improved fuel economy and lower emissions. The ULEV-certified mill pumps out 268-horsepower at 6200 rpm and 248 pound-feet of torque at 4700 rpm while mated to its six-speed automatic gearbox. The combo also returns an estimated 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg highway, or 23 mpg combined. That's a slight improvement over last year's 19/28/23 rating.
Safety features include a seven airbag safety net, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, and TRAC traction control. And yes, the model comes replete with a redesigned accelerator pedal and brake override system.
Three new exterior colors -- Zephyr Blue Metallic, Cypress Pearl and Sizzling Crimson Mica -- have been added to the color pallet. Avalon grade buyers can choose from three leather colors that include Ivory, Light Gray, and Black, while Limited grade owners can specify Ivory, Light Gray, and Black Bordeaux.

Auto show attendees can get up close to the bespoke Speedway Blue paint and matte-black vinyl that runs along the beltline. The motif continues inside with seats wearing black fabric and blue highlights, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with blue stitching. To make a worthy 40th Anniversary tribute car, start with a 2010 Nissan 370Z Touring, equip it with the Sport package, then paint it "40th Graphite" gray and give it a red interior. For extra flavor, add high-luster "smoke" finish 19-in. wheels, red brake calipers, a shock tower brace with a 40th Anniversary badge, and another one of those special badges on the rear hatch. The Ray is a four-door, four-seat, plug-in hybrid based on the Kia Forte platform. Under the Ray's glass hood is a 153-horsepower, 1.4-liter direct-injection four-cylinder engine mated to a continuously variable transmission, used in combination with its 78 kW electric motor. Power can be sent to the Ray's front wheels from the gas engine, the electric motor, or a combination of both. When running only on the energy stored in its lithium-polymer battery pack, Kia says the front-drive Ray can travel up to 50 miles on a single charge.
Altogether, Kia says the Ray will achieve an eye-popping 202 mpg (as opposed to GM's claimed 230 mpg city rating for its coming Chevrolet Volt) and will be able to travel up to a whopping 746 miles before needing to be refueled.
Helping the Ray achieve such lofty eco performance are several green tricks, such as a smart alternator that only charges on deceleration and braking. Other tricks include the extensive use of lightweight composite materials and recycled materials, hexagonal solar cells embedded in the all-glass roof that can power extra lighting or the climate control system to reduce cabin temperature and drive-by-wire steering. Along with the solar cells, the roof also employs "cool glazing" to keep heat from the sun out, which is complemented by nano-laminate films on other parts of the body to reduce heat absorption.

The Hyundai Azera -- the Korean automaker's sedan that occupies the space between the Sonata and Genesis -- has been somewhat forgotten in the Hyundai lineup since its launch in the U.S. some five years ago. But Hyundai is changing that at the 2010 Chicago show with the debut of the 2011 Hyundai Azera, which adds a number of refinements in order to help make it stand out in the near luxury midsize segment. Expect to see it on Hyundai dealer lots starting this spring.
The biggest news for the 2011 Azera is its updated powertrain options, which now feature a choice between a 3.3-liter V-6 or the 3.8-liter Lamba V-6 engine, mated to Hyundai's new, in house built, six-speed automatic transmission.
The 3.3-liter, DOHC V-6 is standard for the Azera GLS and produces roughly 260 horsepower and 233 lb-ft of torque and is estimated at 20 city / 28 highway mpg. The Azera Limited is powered by the Lamba 3.8-liter, DOHC V6 engine which is found in the Genesis sedan and coupe, and delivers an estimated 283 horsepower and 263 lb-ft in the Azera. Estimated mpg for Azera Limited is 19 city / 27 highway mpg.
Mated to each engine is Hyundai's own six-speed automatic with its Shiftmatic manual control feature, a unit the automaker is clearly proud of. Hyundai claims it is the most compact and lightest six speed automatic on the market and is some 26 pounds lighter than the five speed it replaces. It also uses 62 fewer parts and is designed so that the transmission fluid will last for the life of the vehicle under normal circumstances.
Under the sheetmetal, Azera features a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear four-wheel independent suspension and Hyundai says more high strength steel has been used in all the right places in order to add rigidity. In addition, Hyundai says it has improved the Azera's steering and suspension so it can better absorb the bumpy stuff and provide a more responsive steering feel.
Outside, the Azera has undergone a number of changes, including a reworked front fascia that features redesigned headlamps, updated grille and round fog lights. At the back of the car, the Azera picks up LED taillights, along with an updated bumper, chrome tailpipes and decklid treatment. Other updates include new 17-inch alloys and revised side mirrors now sporting puddle lamps. Overall, it's a decent looking update at first glance, but far from the bold new 'fluidic sculpture' design that Hyundai rolled out on the new Sonata.

others and Honda's new Odyssey Minivan Concept looks like just about all it needs to hit the streets is a set of license plates. Indeed, it shouldn't be far off from what you see here -- a new model based off of the concept is expected to hit U.S. streets this fall as the 2011 Honda Odyssey.
A full inch lower than the current production Odyssey and 1.4-inches wider, the Odyssey concept is clearly aimed at attracting new buyers with sleeker, sportier styling. A steeply-raked windshield, "lightning-bolt" beltline, and tapered rear roof line all help to rework the popular people-mover for the new decade. Projector beam headlights and LED taillights fall in line with current design trends and Honda's larger chrome grille is found front and center. The Odyssey Concept's more aerodynamic look is also said to be functional, with a lower drag coefficient to help increase fuel economy.
Speaking of fuel economy, the production 2011 Honda Odyssey is expected to achieve 19 city/28 highway mpg on certain versions. Does that mean the Odyssey will receive a four-cylinder engine option a la 2011 Toyota Sienna that just hit showrooms? Most likely. The '11 Sienna is the new minivan to beat in the revitalized segment, and is capable of 19 city/26 highway, which according to Honda, the Odyssey slimly beats.
So what will change from this thinly-veiled concept when the 2011 Odyssey arrives in the flesh? Well, those diminutive boy-racer mirrors won't make the cut and we're skeptical of those aggressively-styled rocker panels. The interior won't be quite as flashy as the design sketches suggest, and we're also not sure if Honda will be able to integrate such flush-mounted door handles. But generally speaking, at least from the exterior, what you see is pretty much what you'll get.

At this week's 2010 Chicago auto show, Ford is introducing no less than three new propulsion options for its Ford Transit Connect commercial vehicle workhorse, along with showcasing a Taxi version of the vehicle that could serve as Ford's eventual replacement for its long-serving Crown Victoria.
Included in the Transit Connect's expanded powertrain mix is the long-expected EV version featuring a lithium-ion battery pack, along with compressed natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas-powered models. Ford says all of them will be available at the end of the year and claims the biggest benefit of the new options are reduced operating costs -- which Ford believes will be music to commercial fleet owner's ears.
First up: The Transit Connect Electric. It's the first entry in Ford's aggressive electric vehicle strategy, going into production in late 2010. Following it will be an electric Focus in 2011 and an unnamed plug-in hybrid model in 2012.
This Transit Connect uses a liquid-cooled, lithium-ion battery pack supplied by Azure Dynamics, a company that specializes in electric powertrains for commercial vehicles. The connection between Azure and Ford is a budding one. Azure's Balance Hybrid Electric is a medium-duty commercial truck based off the Ford E-450.
In the Transit Connect, its 28-kilowatt-hour "Force Drive" powertrain boasts an 80-mile range and a top speed of 75 mph. If the range seems low, consider the Transit Connect EV is aimed at "fleet owners that have well-defined routes of predictable distances and a central location for daily recharging," as Ford's press release says.
When the juice runs try, the charge port above the passenger rear wheel can be connected to a 240-volt or standard 120-volt outlet. A full charge takes six to eight hours, and Ford estimates the pack will last the lifespan of the vehicle. The battery pack doesn't impede on space either, as the Transit Connect Electric still boasts 135 cu-ft of cargo volume with 59.1-in of load height and 47.8-in of width between the wheel arches.

2011 Ford Edge a simple refresh. Pick nearly any aspect of the popular mid-sized SUV and the Blue Oval's engineers probably tweaked, restyled, or replaced it. It looks and sounds like an all-new edition.
Ford is offering three new powertrains and a revamped transmission to the Edge's SEL, Limited, and Sport lineup. Previously, customers could outfit their Edges with a grand total of one engine and transmission. Now, there's a base 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder that's expected to deliver best-in-class mpg (though no figures have been released), some 15% better fuel economy than the Edge's current 3.5-liter six. A reworked 3.5-liter (285 hp and 253 lb-ft) puts out 20 more ponies versus the previous edition and is said to be cleaner and more fuel efficient than anything preceding it.
The big brother of the mix is a 3.7-liter V-6 that cranks out a robust 305 hp and 280 lb.-ft. of torque (equal to the 2011 Mustang V-6) and is standard equipment on the Edge Sport. Like the Mustang, both V-6 mills use Ford's TiVCT, or twin independent variable camshaft timing, for improved fuel economy and horsepower, as well as lower emissions. Power is routed through a recalibrated first-generation SelectShift six-speed automatic transmission, though the Edge Sport gets the same unit, but with steering wheel-mounted paddles for a more engaging drive. Slip the gearshift into manual mode and the ECU allows for quick shifts at the rev limit.
Peer closely at the new Ford Edge's exterior and you'll notice the slight, but distinguishable changes. Upgrades like slimmer headlights, a bolder front grille, fresh wheel designs, and a more pronounced chin spoiler create a clean, sophisticated look that's better aligned with its named competitors, the Lexus RX350, BMW X5, Audi Q5, Acura MDX, and Nissan Murano. The A-pillars match more seamlessly with the redesigned hood. At the rear, new taillights achieve a jewel-like appearance and are mated with 4-inch chrome exhaust pipes. A blacked-out grille with matching smoked head and taillights -- plus some painted bodywork -- differentiates the Sport from other trims. Ford calls the design updates "more expressive" and "bolder." From what's been shown so far, we tend to agree.
The front lip spoiler was built with two functions in mind. Along with underbody shields, its secondary role is to aid in reducing interior noise levels by controlling passing air. 2011 Ford Shelby GT500, we're sorry to disappoint. Rather than attempt to reinvent an already very capable wheel, Ford has made incremental improvements to the big snake in an effort to squeeze even more performance out of the GT500's already impressive package. The first and most important stop on the upgrade train is under the hood.
Many had speculated that the GT500 would ditch its old Modular 5.4-liter V-8 in favor of a blown version of the hot new 5.0 that recently debuted in the 2011 Mustang GT (and later supercharged for the new Shelby GT350), but that isn't the case. Instead, Ford's Special Vehicles Team decided that the Lotus philosophy of "add lightness" was the way to go. The 5.4's heavy iron block was shuffled off to the scrap heap, replaced by an all-aluminum version of itself. That little trick alone was good for 102 lbs in weight savings.
Of course, aluminum isn't as resistant to the explosions commonly found inside the internal combustion engine as iron and steel, so aluminum-block engines typically require heavy steel liners for the cylinders. To avoid the extra 8.5 lbs of weight gain steel liners would have added, Ford pioneered a process known as Plasma Transferred Wire Arc coating in which a jet of 35,000-degree plasma melts a steel wire and blows the molten steel against the cylinder walls. As it cools, the steel oxidizes to form a super-strong, iron-iron oxide coating.
Back up the new block with a big 2.75-in. exhaust system, a larger two-row intercooler with 40% more capacity, a forged steel crank, and billet six-bolt mains, and you have a recipe for 550 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. That's 10 more horsepower than the iron-block powering the outgoing GT500. In addition, 80% peak torque is available from 1,750 rpm to the 6,250 rpm redline. What's more, the new engine picks up 1 extra mile-per-gallon in both city and highway driving for a total of 15 city and 23 highway, good enough to ditch the Gas Guzzler Tax that saddled the 2010 model. All that power gets to the ground through the popular Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual only.
Of course, that's just the base model. If you really want to kick it up a notch, you'll pop for the optional SVT Performance Package. Starting at the corners, the SVT team ditches the stock 19-in. wheels for a set of lightweight forged-aluminum wheels that are 19-in. in front and 20-in. in the rear, cutting 4.7 lbs and 2.8 lbs respectively from the base model wheels. Next, SVT wraps them in Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar G: 2 tires that are wheel-specific and made exclusively for the GT500 SVT Performance Package.

With little or no money for actual product development in recent times, the folks at Auburn Hills have turned to digging through their library of eye-catching (and eye-searing) exterior colors to drum up interest. In October, the Challenger went Plum Crazy and now, here in snow-coated Chicago, it's become Furious Fuchsia.
The color is patterned after an even hotter one called Panther Pink offered on the original Challenger in 1970 (the Plymouth Road Runner version was called Moulin Rouge). While it's not certain as to why someone within the Pentastar's product-planning department decided that what the world needs is a rebirth of the hot pink muscle car, it's here, it's quite pink, and for better or worse, amazingly eye-catching.
Furious Fuchsia will be available on both R/T Classic and SRT8 variants of the Challenger starting at $35,140 and $45,150, respectively. Dealers will begin taking orders next month, but the first of these hot pink Challengers won't be built until May.

Though it may look nearly identical to the existing Silverado HD, save for small refinements to the hood, grille and front bumper, don't let that fool you. The real story lies beneath, where Chevrolet has made big improvements to the structure and powertrain that the company promises will make this truck a segment-leader in towing and hauling, all the while burning cleaner and making more power.
Starting under the hood, Chevrolet is rolling out the latest version of the 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V-8, which has been reworked internally to increase strength and improve efficiency. How much, Chevy won't say yet, but the company promises that the new mill will put out "significantly" more power than the current engine, which churns out 365 hp and 660 lb-ft of torque. If you don't need that much twist, there's always the 6.0L Vortec gasoline V-8 which is mostly unchanged save for a new camshaft that increases torque at low RPM.
If you want to sample Chevy's latest gizmos, though, you'll want to stick with the oil burner. Internally, the Duramax has seen its oiling system upgraded substantially and the engine can now be run on B20 biodiesel without any modification. Altogether, Chevy says the improvements are good for an 11% increase in highway fuel economy and a range of 680 miles thanks to a 36-gallon fuel tank.
Those aren't the only new tricks the Duramax has learned either. With a urea solution injected into the exhaust stream from a 5.3-gallon tank that will reportedly last 5,000 miles between fill-ups, Chevy says it has reduced NOX emissions by 63%. A new diesel particulate filter now lasts for 700 miles between regenerations, a full 300 miles longer than the outgoing truck.

It wouldn't be a stretch to call the Chevrolet Suburban the original SUV, with roots dating all the way back to the 1930s. It's also the longest running automobile nameplate still in production, and to celebrate its latest significant birthday, Chevrolet has created the 2010 75th Anniversary Diamond Edition Chevrolet Suburban.
Making its debut at the 2010 Chicago show, the 75th Anniversary Suburban is a special trim package that will be limited to 2,570 units. Each copy starts with the Suburban's LTZ package and is available in either 2WD or 4WD half-ton versions, and comes standard with a host of GM's latest entertainment and safety-themed technology including a rear view camera and parking assist, remote start, Bluetooth, and a navigation system with integrated XM Radio and NavTraffic. Options include a rear seat entertainment system, a blind spot warning system and mobile WiFi.
So what makes the Diamond Edition special? A White Diamond Tricoat paintjob, Cashmere colored interior, special 20-in. chrome rims, roof rack rails and of course, lots of special badge work, including on the wheel center cap, sill plates and front headreasts. In other words, not much.

The F01/F02 BMW 7 Series-based Alpina B7, which is making its North American debut at the 2010 Chicago show, is the latest offering from the Bavarian factory-supported BMW tuner (Alpinas are sold at BMW dealers and covered by BMW warranties) and is only the second B7 to be offered in the U.S.
Underhood, BMW's 4.4L, twin-turbo V-8 remains under the unique Alpina engine cover, but with new pistons, enlarged intercoolers, and a 14.5-psi max boost pressure, the mill produces 500-hp and 516 lb.-ft. of torque -- the latter comes on tap at 3000 rpm. For those keeping score, that's 115 hp per liter, and a worthy improvement over the 750i's 400 hp and 450 lb-ft. This newfound power, Alpina claims, will propel the rear-drive B7 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.
Yet acceleration plays but a bit part. In the handling department, angling for a neutral experience behind the wheel, Alpina has fitted shorter springs, dropping ride height by 0.6 inches front and 0.4 inches rear. The B7 also makes use of BMW's Dynamic Damping Control and Active Roll Stabilization, offering three setups: Comfort, Normal, and Sport. Each setting affects items like the suspension, power steering resistance, dampening, and throttle response. Throw the Alpina six-speed automatic into sport mode, and shifts take a "few hundred milliseconds" when commanded by buttons on the back of the steering wheel.
Alpina wraps Michelin PS2 tires, measuring 245/35 front and 285/30 rear, around its unique 21-in wheels. New front and rear splitters compliment the rolling stock, and Alpina claims reduce front lift 30% and rear by 15%. The revised fascia also integrates multiple engine and transmission coolers.
With the performance components set, Alpina turned to the interior, adding illuminated doorsills, hand-stitched leather to the steering wheel, and Myrtle Burl trim, which a wood unique to the B7 and the Pacific Coast. Piano Lacquer interior trim is optional. You'll find Alpina logos on the upper seatbacks, on the LCD cluster, and on a plaque mounted on the inner roof panel just ahead of the sunroof. The standard allotment of 7 Series exterior colors are available, as is Alpina's signature blue metallic.
