Chypre: Cyprus In the History of Perfume

In 1917, Great Britain had just obtained Cyprus from the Ottoman Empire. Stories of the exotic island with its ancient ruins and Eastern Mediterranean charm piqued European imagination and quickly became fashionable. 1917 was the year Francois Coty released the iconic Chypre de Coty, which inspired so many latter perfumes that chypre became a new family of scent, named after the French word for Cyprus. However, chypre perfumes has a history almost as ancient as the ruins on Cyprus. Chypre perfume referred to a blend of materials commonly found in ancient Roman times and was a staple of 18th century perfume manuals. Guerlain Chypre and Guerlain Chypre de Paris were both predecessors of the established Chypre fragrance family.

Chypre de Coty shaped the rough hewn traditional chypre into the refined classic chypre structure of citrusy bergamot top notes, a floral heart, and a base of oakmoss and usually patchouli, musk, and amber. As I sit in a Nicosia kafeneio drinking in the scents of the Cyprus Spring, it seems like the perfect time to write a bit about the perfume legends this pretty little island has inspired. Over the years, the classic chypre structure has been modified and embellished to evoke different moods and feels. The following are some of the most iconic chypres under their respective subclasses.

Fruity Chypre: Guerlain Mitsouko was created by Jacques Guerlain in 1919 and was revolutionary in adding a fresh and luscious peach note to the dry chypre oakmoss. However, the peach note is thoroughly abstract and bears no resemblance to the syrupy peach soda fragrances swamping the perfume market. The Mitsouko peach develops from the blossoms that blends with a rich rose heart to the soft peach skin to the woody peach kernel. Guerlain Mitsouko is a femme fatale that embodies the jazzy Roaring Twenties. Mitsouko is a very complex scent that needs time and sophistication to appreciate.

Leathery Chypre: Chanel Cuir de Russie was created by nose Ernest Beaux for Coco Chanel in 1924. 1924 was a time when many Russian aristocrats fled from their homeland following the 1917 revolution with deposed the royalty and created the Soviet Union through the Bolshevik revolution. The Parisian fashion scene was greatly influenced by the opulence of the old Russian aristocrats with their exotic Eastern allure. Cuir de Russie was inpired by Coco Chanel's own love affair with the exiled Grand Duke Dimitri Pavlovitch, cousin of the last Tsar of Russia, with influences from her friends Stravinsky and Diaghilev. Cuir de Russie opens with dry aldehydes and the chypre bergamot, has a heart of jasmine, rose, ylang-ylang, and a warm base of the softest leather tempered with amber and vanilla. Chanel Cuir de Russie is a confident woman who proudly wears the opulence of past glory.

Green Chypre: Chanel No. 19 was created by Henri Robert in 1971, a year before Coco Chanel passed away. The number 19 was chosen for the fragrance to commemorate Coco Chanel's birthday on the 19th of August. Chanel No. 19 is a balsamic green scent which opens with sharp bergamot and galbanum followed by hyacinth. The scent develops into a luscious velvety floral blend of rose, ylang-ylang, and iris, then finally settling into a dry chypre base of leather and sandalwood. No. 19 is an expression of Chanel's crisp elegance, her sense of balance between sharp and soft. Chanel No. 19 is strong and passionate yet decorously restrained and elegant.

Citrusy Chypre: Christian Dior Eau Sauvage was created by Edmond Roudnitska in 1966. Refreshing, clean, and elegant, Eau Sauvage is the quintessential masculine citrus scent. Eau Sauvage is a light scent that opens with an earthy citrusy accord of lemons and petitgrain which introduces sheer floral notes of rose, iris, and jasmine with aromatic touches of basil and rosemary. The scent dries down to a chypre base of oakmoss, vetiver, and musk. Dior Eau Sauvage is impeccably dressed in a conservative blazer from a glamorous era.

For the first time in the 63 years of presence of the Cambridge University newspaper (Varsity), a controversial photo article is hosted. The newspaper was first published in 1947 as the independent student newspaper for the University of Cambridge and this is the first time ever they include a topless photo.

A 20 year-old girl/student appears half-naked wearing a wool scarf only in the wet fields around Cambridge for this art photography/fashion article of the newspaper. They named it "Days in Paradise" and the aim is to get a simple and tender result!

I just came across this really interesting video clip from a band called OK Go .
The song is called "This Too Shall Pass" but honestly if you take a look at the video clip you probably won't give too much attention to the actual song ( at least the first time). This is the most interesting video clip I've seen for a while. I have no idea how is linked to the actual song. In any case, I just wanted to share this piece of art with you all.

Babutsa - London Calling 2009

"Babutsa", the name (in Greek and Turkish) of a juicy fruit particular to Cyprus, bestowed its title to the music band, which has proven to be a great hit both in Turkey and in Cyprus. The band, unusually formed of three soloists as opposed to a single lead, released their debut album in the latter half of 2009. The three members of the group Peri Aziz, Soner Türsoy and Ali Sönmez came together for this exciting and somewhat pioneering project. The members of the band, who like many other Cypriot ex-pats live in the UK, met in London and formed their own group.

The recording of the 12 songs that make up the album took place at the "London Sons Studios". Aside from the songs containing their own lyrics, the album entitled "London Calling" also contains songs composed by Raif Denktaş, Vangelis Perpiniathis, Ayhan Başkal, Türkan Altay, Ersay Hasan, Erdinç Gündüz and Buray Hoşsöz. By giving these popular Cypriot songs their unique rendition, Babutsa have managed to grab the attention of not only Cypriots around the world, but also of many people in Turkey who are often foreign to Cypriot music.

In the album every member recorded a total of 4 songs and demonstrated the high level of influence that they have each had from various styles of music including pop, rock, blues, reggae and some Greek tunes. In fact, one of the songs, "Gençlik Böyle Geçer"/"Ekatomiria" even contains a delightful blend of Greek and Turkish lyrics. However, "Yanayım Yanayım", recorded by Ali, which was the first release song and the song for which the first video clip was filmed has found its way to the top of the charts in Turkey and Cyprus and managed to find a place for itself on the tongues of many people from all walks of life. For those interested in experiencing a taste of Babutsa (no pun intended!), the band frequently hold numerous gigs in Cyprus, Turkey and the UK, the details of which can be found on their facebook fan page.

The Tale of Beatrix Potter (1866–1943)

We recently found a little treasure in a a large skip in our neighbourhood. Among other things thrown in there (most of them in perfectly good condition) there was a wealth of childrens' books, so we salvaged them.

We gave most away, but I decided to keep 3 of them for myself. They are 3 stories by Beatrix Potter. It broke my heart that anyone would throw them in the trash.

I am a sucker for good stories and looking back, I think that Beatrix Potter's stories, among others, must have played a major part in the moulding of my baby brain. Peter Rabbit was one of my first heroes, and the adventures of Benjamin Bunny, Flopsy, Tiptoes, Mr.Tod and Tom Kitten filled my head in the most colourful way, aided of course by Potter's lovingly crafted illustrations.

But while so many people have known and loved her stories, few know about Potter's own tale, her life and her scientific aspirations. As an aspiring zoologist myself (apart from an established sucker for good stories), I feel that, like her characters, she has become one of my present heroes.

Her parents didn't let her go to school and appointed her as their housekeeper, and she was rejected by the male-dominated scientific establishment of the time on the basis of gender. Despite everyone's disapproval and hinderance, she still went for it, fought for her work and for her own place in science.

She managed to become an expert mycologist, and was one of the first people to recognize that lichens were the product of a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an alga. She made remarkable, detailed drawings of fossils, archaeological finds, mosses and lichens, wild flowers, microscope drawings and, most importantly, fungi. Despite being ignored by male scientists, she managed to get a paper presented to the Linnean Society by her chemist uncle (she wasn't allowed at the meeting ofcourse). In her later years, she became a farmer and sheep breeder and was involved in preserving the ecology and natural beauty of the Lake District.

If she was given a break, she would have probably been a successful professional botanist or mycologist and made a great contribution to science. She earns my respect for developing her talents and intelligence the best way she could with what she had, trying hard for what she wanted, and outshining everyone else's expectations of her anyway.

She gave a lot of land to the National Trust, she donated her scientific illustrations to the Armitt Trust, and she left us with the wealth of her books and her wonderful stories. She also left people in general, but women in particular, an invaluable inheritance- her own graceful battle against the establishment.

(So if you're ever thinking of throwing Peter Rabbit in the bin, don't. Or else.)

Dimitris Papaioannou (born Athens, 1964) is a Greek avant-garde choreographer, director, dancer and artist who conceived and directed the 2004 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony and its closing counterpart. The opening ceremony drew considerable acclaim from the international media.

Papaioannou studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts, where he was trained by the Greek artist Giannis Tsarouchis. He later studied dance and trained with the La Mamma Experimental Theater Company in New York and the choreographer Erick Hawkins. His explorations of dance, theatre and improvisation have also led him to an interest in Japanese modern dance disciplines.

In 1986 he founded his experimental Omada Edafous Dance Theatre troupe, with his duets with the dancer Angeliki Stellatou becoming a trademark and securing performances at Biennales in Spain and Italy. The more classical and minimalist setting of 1993's well-received Medea foreshadowed Papaioannou's conception of the Olympic ceremony. Other significant works by Papaioannou include : "Domatio I", which he choreographed in 1988, "To Teleftaio Tragoudi"(the Last Song) in 1990, "Enos Leptou Sighi"(a Moment of Silence) in 1995, 1997's "Dracula", set as a performance only in white and characterized as a transition from light to darkness, "Tragoudi '99" (Song '99) in 1999, and "Ghia Panda"(For Ever), in 2001.

JUST CARE photo exhibition

On Wednesday, the 21st of October at 8 there will be a photo exhibition opening at OMIKRON gallery (opposite the old GSP, Nicosia). On display will be photographs taken by Marina Shacola and Andreas Vassiliou during their travels to sub-saharan Africa. Together they created the Sophia Foundation for Children and have initiated numerous projects in Kenya.

The event will be opened by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Demetris Christofias. A bazaar will follow with works of African art. A book containing all their photos will be on sale as well. All proceeds will go towards the renovation of the Makarios Orphanage in Kenya.

Their efforts are admirable (especially in Cyprus where such initiatives are few) and we should show our appreciation by supporting their event.
