Many people use Excel as a simple database manager, entering information in different rows of a worksheet. As you are working with your data tables, you may come across a need to reverse the order of the rows in the table. Thus, if you have a table with ten rows, the rows would go from ten to one instead of one to ten.

There is no intrinsic function in Excel that allows you to flip data in this manner. However, you can use the sorting capabilities of Excel to accomplish the same thing by following these general steps:
1.Insert a new column immediately to the left of your data table.
2.In the cells of the new column, enter the numbers 1 through however many rows there are in your table.
3.Select the rows that make up your data table.
4.Choose Sort from the Data menu. Excel displays the Sort dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
5.In the Sort By drop-down list, indicate you want to sort by your newly created column.
6.Click Descending as the type of sort.
7.Click on OK. Excel reorders your data in the reverse order of what it was.

How To: Edit Visual Studio Templates

Every time you create a new item in a Visual Studio project you get some default text. For some it is exactly what you want. For others you find yourself consistently making the same additions/deletions. Thankfully, changing the default content in the templates is easy to do.

Steps

1.Locate the templates directory.
2.Change the template you want to change.
3.Rebuild the template cache.

Locate the templates directory.

If you installed Visual Studio in its default location, you will find all the files of interest in the following two places:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\ItemTemplates
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\ItemTemplatesCache

Under both of these directories will be separate directories for C#, VB.NET, J#, and Web. Since every language has different templates, they are separated in their own directories. Web templates are separated, and under the web folder there are folders for the individual languages. In these directories (and in the 1033 directory that all of them have) are the templates. All the files under the ItemTemplates folder are zip files. Under the ItemTemplatesCache directory are folders that correspond to the zip files in the ItemTemplates directory. For example, in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\ItemTemplates\CSharp\1033 directory is a zip file named Class.zip. This is the template for the Class file option in the Visual Studio dialog Visual C# projects. Its twin in the cache is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\ItemTemplatesCache\CSharp\1033\Class.zip, which is the files that are contained in the Class.zip file.

Find the template you want and edit it.

So next find the item template that you would like to edit. Let us say you want to edit the normal class template, the one that you get when you pick "Class" in the new item dialog in a class library. That one is found in ItemTemplates\CSharp\1033\Class.zip. Find that file, back it up somewhere (just in case something goes wrong), and extract the contents. You will probably see the following:

I will take you through the changes I make. First, since I take them out more than I keep them in, I remove the second two using statement. Second, I put "public " in front of the class declaration. After that, I am done.

Next, delete the Class.zip in the ItemTemplates\CSharp\1033\ directory. Put the files that are in the folder that was extracted earlier into a new zip file called Class.zip, and place that new zip file where the old zip file was. At that point the edits are done.

If you were to go into Visual Studio after that and create a new class file you would notice that the changes were not yet in effect. To make that happen, you have to rebuild the template cache.

Rebuild the template cache.

It appears that Visual Studio pulls from the ItemTemplatesCache folder for its template items, not from the ItemTemplates folder. To get those changes into the ItemTemplateCache you can manually make the changes or you can have Visual Studio rebuild the template cache. This is done by opening up the Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt and executing "devenv /installvstemplates". This will recreate the cache.

What you do not want to do is to just make the change in the ItemTemplatesCache folder and not in the ItemTemplates folder. If there is any reason in the future that the cache needs to be regenerated, all of your changes would be lost. When the cache is recreated the ItemTemplatesCache folder is deleted, so any local modifications will be lost.

Also, I would recommend shutting down Visual Studio with the rebuilding is done. Visual Studio does not need to be restarted for the change to be noticed, but it did give me an error once (sorry, do not remember what it said) when I rebuilt with Visual Studio opened, but not after I closed the IDE and ran it again.

Movie Maker Hanging - Solution

Movie Maker sometimes causes problems crashing or hanging when trying to save projects or files.

(This appears to be a Hardware acceleration issue)

This is how I solved this problem:

For Windows Vista

1) Click on the Start Button.
2) Right Click on "Computer", select "Properties".
3) Click on "Advanced System Settings" on the left.
4) Click on the Advanced Tab
5) In the Performance, Visual effects. processor scheduling, memory usage, and virtual memory section:-
6) Click on the Settings Button
7) Click on the Advanced Tab on this window.
8) Within the Process scheduling section click in the Radio Button Background services
9) Then Click the Apply button, bottom right.
10) Then click the OK Button.
11) Then click the next OK Button.
12) Close the windows.

For Windows XP

1) Click on the Start Button.
2) Select My Computer
3) Select View system information
4) Click on the Advanced Tab
5) In the Performance, Visual effects. processor scheduling, memory usage, and virtual memory section:-
6) Click on the Settings Button
7) Click on the Advanced Tab on this window.

Windows Movie Maker should now handle files and projects all right.

I noticed no degrade in computer speed after using this File Fix.

Another Tip. Is having patience, and then have even more patience. Video, Picture and sound files may be very large and therefore take some time to import and process etc.

This is in an interesting one, and can be a real killer for your computer. No, this isn’t a virus, and no, it’s not spyware. It’s an official Microsoft process that is part of the Windows Live Photo Gallery that they recently released. Apparently it still has some bugs in it such that some people will find that this process loads up mysteriously and simply hogs the CPU and chokes out any other process you want to run.

It acts like a virus, kind of, because it brings your computer to a virtual stand-still. But it’s just a buggy part of their program. And they know about it, too.

The following batch file will automatically perform all the steps that are required to disable support for QuickTime.
To create and run the batch file that will disable support for QuickTime, follow these steps:

Copy the text the next section, “Batch file to disable QT support.”
Paste the text into Notepad.
Save the document to your desktop as “DisableWLPGQT.cmd,” and then exit Notepad.
Run the batch file. To do this, follow the appropriate step:
1. In Windows Vista, right-click the DisableWLPGQT.cmd file, and then click Run as administrator.
2. In Windows XP, make sure that you are logged in as a user who has administrator credentials. Then, double-click the DisableWLPGQT.cmdfile.
Restart the computer.

QuickTime content is now disabled in the Windows Live Photo Gallery.

Fixing "BOOTMGR is missing" Error While Trying to Boot Windows Vista

If your Windows Vista computer has encountered the dreaded “BOOTMGR is missing” error, you aren’t alone. If the problem isn’t hardware related you can fix it with relative ease as long as you have a Windows Vista DVD handy.

If you don’t have one, you can create a Windows Vista repair disk using our guide.

Boot off the Windows Vista DVD and then click Next at the first prompt:

You should see a link in the lower left-hand side for “Repair your computer”

The installation process will attempt to find your Vista installation directory. If there’s more than one in the list, select the correct one and then use the Next button again.

Click the first link for “Startup Repair”

The installation process will repair the system, and then prompt for you to reboot.

Alternatively you could have chosen the Command Prompt option instead, and use the following command to fix the boot options only:

bootrec /fixboot

At this point you should be able to reboot your computer, remove the DVD and everything should be working. If not, then head over to the online forums and ask your question there. We’ve got some top-notch geeks over there!

How to Check If My Processor is x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) in Windows?

Up until this point you might not have wondered to check if your processor isx86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) as almost no one used 64-bit in Windows XP and when Vista came, most were cautious about the drivers and compatibility with 64-bit processor including me but I think its time everybody moves to 64-bit processing for Windows 7.

Windows 7 is here and you have to make a decision to go for 32-bit or 64-bit before you upgrade from XP or Vista to Windows 7 and I recommend you going for 64-bit.

But why? First let’s see what exactly these numbers 32 and 64 represent. These numbers 32-bit and 64-bit represent the Data Bus width that are between the Memory (RAM) and the Processor. Obviously you can see that 64-bit has the capability of carrying data twice the width of 32-bit. If you were using 32-bit Vista so far, you would have seen the maximum memory it can realize is 3 GB (though you have 4GB) but with 64-bit Windows you can realize much higher (It was 128 GB with 64-bit Vista). Also, in days to come having more than 4 GB will become a standard and developers and service providers will have to give support and drivers for 64-bit processors. So it’s wise to invest in 64-bit processor and OS at this point in time!

So you have an old Windows XP or Vista computer and now how do you find if your processor is 64-bit capable?

There are different ways to find if your computer processor is 64-bit capable:

Method 1: Easy Method!

Go to Start -> Right click on Computer -> Click Properties. Click on Windows Experience Index.

Now click on View and Print detailed performance and system information.

Here you will be able to see the current system type, number of processor core and if it is 64-bit capable. Note: If you are already running 64-bit processor, it will show in the current system type and you will not see if it is 64-bit capable or not.

If you feel a bit geeky then you can use the following methods to find if your processor is 64-bit:

Method 2: Using Regedit

Go to Start -> Type regedit

Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System\CentralProcessor\0

From ProcessorNameString you will be able to see the name of your processor and fromIdentifier you will see the family of the processor and if it has 64 then it is 64-bit capable.

Method 3: Using MSINFO32

Go to Start -> Type msinfo32.exe

From the System Information page under System Type you will find as x64-based PC.

Method 4: Using CPUZ

Download CPUZ

CPUZ is a small utility which gives all information about your CPU (Processor), Cache, Mainboard, Memory, SPD etc.

Under Instructions from CPU tab, if you see EM64T (if its Intel) or AMD64 (if its AMD) then your processor is 64-bit capable.

So are you using 32-bit or 64-bit processor and which OS are you using. If you are having 32-bit Windows, will you consider going for 64-bit OS, let us know in the comments.

Configuring Cygwin C/C++ compiler for Netbeans 6.5 (under Windows)

Today I tried setting up Netbeans as a C IDE, it has built in support for C, but unfortunately enough you have to manually configure a compiler so that you can actually debug / build your C/C++ programs.

Fortunately there is this helpful page at Netbeans.org to help you install Cygwin, a very popular UNIX/Windows C/C++ compiler. However, this helpful page isn’t as helpful as I’d hope at all! It will point you in the right direction to download Cygwin, and will tell you what packages to select for download, it will even tell you to set up your PATH environment variable for Cygwin, but it will assume Netbeans auto detects the correct settings, which it unfortunately doesn’t do. (Well at least at my pc, and I’ve seen a few threads with the same problems around).

So here is my attempt at a more complete overview on installing Cygwin for Netbeans 6.5.
Go to http://www.cygwin.com/setup.exe and download the small setup program. Run it (if your using Vista, set the compatibility options to XP SP2, and run it as administrator). Follow the pretty standard steps until you get to choose the installation packages. If you thought just pressing next would install the most common Cygwin apps, like the compiler (gcc.exe) and the make implementation, unfortunately Cygwin, is not just a C/C++ compiler, it even includes a java compiler, games, documentation, text editors etc. . Ok so just install everything, well that will install the compiler etc., but also 3GB of (for us) useless data. So don’t make the same mistake I did there. We are going to search for the few packages that we actually need. According to the Netbeans.org these are:
select gcc-core: C compiler, gcc-g++: C++ compiler, gdb: The GNU Debugger, and make: the GNU version of the ‘make’ utility.
Unfortunately these aren’t easy to find. For example there is no core package directly visible (we do have base and development though). It took me a while but I think I’ve nailed it down. Select the following packages by clicking the weird “refresh” icon next to them until it says install:
-The entire base

-In the development package select

–binutils

–gcc core

–gcc g++

–gcc g77

–gcc mingw core

–gcc mingw g++

–gcc mingw g77

–gdb

–make

–mingw runtime
(note I’m not sure about the mingw packages, this seems to be a seperate C compiler but it doesn’t seem to harm)

After that go to windows configuration screen->advanced->environment variables. And add "C:\Cygwin\Bin” to the PATH variables (or wherever you have located your Cygwin\bin folder, (make sure to separate it from the last one with a ‘;’).

Start Netbeans, navigate to tools->options->C/C++. Check to see if Cygwin is in the list on the left panel. Select it, and then fill in the options as following: (I assume that you’ve installed it in C:\Cygwin)
Base Director: C:\Cygwin\bin C compiler C:\Cygwin\bin\gcc.exe

C++ Compiler: C:\Cygwin\bin\g++-3.exe*

Fortran Compiler: C:\Cygwin\bin\g77-3.exe*

Make Command: C:\Cygwin\bin\make.exe

Debugger: C:\Cygwin\bin\gdb.exe
(* marks optional)

Now make a new C project. And add a new main file to it by right clicking the source directory and selecting New->Main C file. There is an odd chance that the include directives will be underlined with red. This is not a problem, as you will see the program will compile and run fine, but you can’t use intellisense this way so we are going to fix it. (First make sure your PATH variable was correctly set!).

Right click on your project and select properties. Go to build->C compiler (or C++ compiler if you are doing C++). Select the “…” button after Include Directories. And add the “C:\Cygwin\usr\include” directory to the include directories. Save your settings and reload your project. The red lines should’ve disappeared now, leaving you behind with a fully functional C/C++ IDE and compiler in Netbeans. *Yay*!

Configuring Microsoft Outlook for NTU mail

The procedure given below would work ONLY if you are connected to the NTU network (either through LAN or Wireless). However, if you are not connected, you could download and install the NTU VPN software, which allows you to use the Internet to connect to the NTU network.

This post serves as a guide to all NTU students who want to use their NTU Mail on Microsoft Outlook.

1) Open Control Panel -> Mail.

2) Click on "Show Profiles".

3) Now click "Add". In the new dialog box, give a name for the profile (eg)Mail NTU.

4) Select the "Manually Configure server settings or additional server types" and click NEXT.

5) Select "Microsoft Exchange Server" and click NEXT.

6) Enter "MAIL24.student.main.ntu.edu.sg" as the Exchange Server.

7) Enter # followed by your name and followed again by # in the "User Name" text box (eg) #BIJU JOSEPH JACOB#
Click "Check Name" in order to verify. Your name will be underlined once it is verified.

8) Click on "More Settings ..." and then go to the "Connections" tab.

9) Select the "Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP", and click on the "Exchange Proxy Settings" button.

10) Fill up the details exactly as shown above and click OK.

11) Now click "Apply" and then click on "OK".

12) Click NEXT and then FINISH.

13) Launch Microsoft Outlook and enter your NTU username and password. (For your user name enter "student\" before entering your username).
