Financial Aid Workshop Wednesday, November 30th at 4pm

Glacier High School would like to invite all parents and students to attend our annual Community College and Financial Aid Workshop this Wednesday, November 30th at 4pm in Modular C at our Oakhurst Campus. If you are a parent of a senior or junior or a senior and junior yourself, and have not yet attended any workshops regarding college and Financial Aid you should attend this one! 9th and 10th grade families are also encouraged to attend , it is never to early to find out about college. A college representative will be at Glacier to explain the Community College process, including registration, transfer information, and vocational education. The Representative will also explain the Financial Aid process and go in to detail on how students are given grants, scholarships and student loans as well as when and how to apply to FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Refreshments will also be provided. So bring paper and pen for note-taking and any questions. Please contact your charter teacher to reserve seating for this workshop.

9th, 10th, 11th Grade Benchmark testing 11/2/11 8:30am

Dear Glacier High School 9^th, 10^th and11^th Graders,

This is a reminder that you are to be here at the Oakhurst Campus, tomorrow morning, 11/2/11 for our school’s benchmark testing. We will be administering the ACT’s Plan test to the 9^thgraders and the Explore test to the 10^th and 11^thgraders. We need you here at school by 8:15. The testing will last approximately three hours. You may use a calculator, so please come prepared with yourown. Please note however, scientific calculators are not allowed. Your regular classes will follow after the testingconcludes. Below is the schedule for tomorrow.

An informational meeting will be held at 3 PM tomorrow (Friday afternoon, Oct 28) at Glacier HS Module C, outlining a trip to Europe proposed for the spring of 2012. The meeting will include a Powerpoint presentation provided by an established tour company, and an opportunity will be provided for discussion about fundraising, trip preparations, and coordinating travel with school. ROV workshop for interested students.

Tomorrow, Tuesday October 11th we are having an “ROV-in-a-Bag” workshops to help students grades 6th- 12th to learn how to design and build their own ROVs. During this 90-minute workshops, students create then test-fly their own ROVs in a outdoor swimming pool. This is a great chance for students to see if this something they will want to commit to. Please meet us at 2pm in Mountain Home School main building. We will then travel to the Yosemite High School pool. Directions will be provided. Please arrange for your own transportation. There is no cost for this workshop and no commitment, come check it out, you child will be glad they did! Any questions feel free to give Mr. Hagen or Mr. Englund a call at school.

Other family members are welcome to take pictures, as well. Packets will be available for purchase. Free Student I.D.'s will be available upon request only (see order form). Parents can purchase an I.D. card for $5.00.

Program Flyer: Constitution Day 2011: Powers of the President

TEST: If the connection TEST to the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site in St. Louis does not work, I will let you know three days before the actual event.

Arrive 15 minutes early. The program begins right at 11:00 AM PST

Because of the grade level content, young children attending would not be advantageous.

Program Length 60 minutes

Description: The 11:00 AM PST program will focus on the President and international issues. Our scheduled panelists of political scientists, Presidential scholars, and Presidential advisers will be able to provide great insights into the questions above and your students’ questions as well as we discuss the powers of the President. Viewers will also hear directly from President George H.W. Bush and President William J. Clinton through video messages created specifically for the program. The program will air from the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site in St. Louis, Missouri.

Program Format:

Pre-Program Information—The Constitution Day Study Guide prepared by The Missouri Bar is available as a download with this web exhibit if you enroll for our program. It is also available for anyone’s use at www.mobar.org in the Educators’ section under Constitution Day. The guide will include Constitutional issues to consider, questions, worksheets and other activities designed to get your students thinking about the issues that will form the focus of the program.Program Order—The videoconference program will consist of the following segments. Student questions and comments will be welcomed throughout the program. This program will focus on Presidential powers in the foreign policy arena. A finalized program agenda detailing the specific powers to be explored in segment 2 below and specific examples of decision-making referred to in segment 3 below will be sent to schools upon their enrollment in the program.

1. Welcome and Introduction—Student groups and experts will be introduced and welcomed to the program.

2. Powers of the Presidency—This section of the program will explore the Presidential powers enumerated in the Constitution and the historical background and debate for determining those powers.

3. Process of Presidential Decision-Making and Implications of Presidential Action—This section of the program will look at historic examples of Presidential decision-making, processes used to make those decisions, and implications of those decisions on the separation and balance of power between the three branches of government as well as on the nation as a whole.

4. Summary and Closing—We’ll summarize the major Constitutional implications of the program’s discussion and close the program.

Objectives Students will be able to:
1. Explain the purpose of Article II of the United States Constitution.
2. Evaluate and defend the role of the President in the American Constitutional System.
3. Explain how the executive branch has evolved since 1787 and the implications of this evolution.
4. Compare and contrast the executive branch of George Washington’s presidency with the present day presidency.

Initial conferences are important to sign contracts, establish your current course list, review your progress towards graduation, and set overall goals for the coming year. Wild Water Adventure - Aug. 19th!

It’s time to have some fun! On Friday, August 19th, we will begin our new school year with a trip to Wild Water Park. The cost is $12.50 per person and the deadline to sign up & pay is Tuesday, August 16th. The fee is nonrefundable. Even if you didn’t originally sign up in June, we’d love to have you attend. We will meet at the park entrance at 11:00 a.m. to distribute tickets, so please arrive on time. Families may bring their lunch and drinks as in past years but need to remember that no glass containers are allowed inside the park. Wild Water’s address is 11413 East Shaw Avenue, Clovis, CA.
