Read it or don't agree or don't but either way comment I would like to see what people think.

What do Wikinomics, The Wisdom of Crowds and The Tipping Point all have in comon? Three different books by three different authors.

Today as I was reading in Time Magazine this picture grabbed my attention right off the bat with an article entitled "Who Will Rule the New Internet?".

Google, facebook and Apple three of my favorite internet platforms. All three I use daily and I am willing to bet there are many of you that do too. If you don't you should.

What I found most interesting was while the article proposed to determine who is the leader in the "Internet Revolution" it really seemed to be more a question of who is leading the "Social Internet".

This made me realize that this is what the internet is in reality fast becoming, though not even in the way I would have first thought. We are being used by companies to, as Malcom Gladwell puts it in his book, be connectors and mavens not unlike Paul Revere but as advertisers for companies.

First lets explore these three books one at a time.

Wikinomics by Don Tapscott and Anthony D. Williams
The word "wiki" means "quick" in Hawaiian, and here author and think tank CEO Tapscott (The Naked Corporation), along with research director Williams, paint in vibrant colors the quickly changing world of Internet togetherness, also known as mass or global collaboration, and what those changes mean for business and technology. Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia written, compiled, edited and re-edited by "ordinary people" is the most ubiquitous example, and its history makes remarkable reading. Methods for exploiting the power of collaborative production are outlined throughout, an alluring compendium of ways to throw open previously guarded intellectual property and to invite in previously unavailable ideas that hide within the populace at large. This clear and meticulously researched primer gives business leaders big leg up on mass collaboration possibilities; as such, it makes a fine next-step companion piece to James Surowiecki's 2004 bestseller The Wisdom of Crowds.

The Wisdom of Cowds by James Surowiecki
While our culture generally trusts experts and distrusts the wisdom of the masses, New Yorker business columnist Surowiecki argues that "under the right circumstances, groups are remarkably intelligent, and are often smarter than the smartest people in them." If four basic conditions are met, a crowd's "collective intelligence" will produce better outcomes than a small group of experts, Surowiecki says, even if members of the crowd don't know all the facts or choose, individually, to act irrationally. "Wise crowds" need (1) diversity of opinion; (2) independence of members from one another; (3) decentralization; and (4) a good method for aggregating opinions. The diversity brings in different information; independence keeps people from being swayed by a single opinion leader; people's errors balance each other out; and including all opinions guarantees that the results are "smarter" than if a single expert had been in charge.

So the way I see it companies are able to harness a free workforce that is smarter and more effecient than anyone or team they could have hired even with the best resources like say... Microsoft. You see where I am going with this yet?

Look at companies like Mozzilla, which produces firefox a completely free and open sourced web browser. If you are not already using it I recommend you give it a try. Version 3 is out today and expected to break the world record for downloads in one day.

Both facebook and Google have very open sourced platforms which allow others to write applications for them and then let anyone on their network use them free of charge. And just in the last couple of weeks both have taken steps to become even more "open".

Apple is not so "open" in fact they might be the opposite of open which is one reason why it has taken them so long to become such a house hold item. When personal computers were first becoming truly personal and affordable Apple only allowed their own software to be used on their systems while the rest of the industry was built around a shared standard. Open if you will. This could prove to be their down fall once more or prove to be smart because they can better control the quality of there product or even programs that run on their products.

Yet all three are I believe are using and working to exploit even more efficiently the principal found in "The Tipping Point". Advertising

The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell
Little changes can have big effects; when small numbers of people start behaving differently, that behavior can ripple outward until a critical mass or "tipping point" is reached, changing the world. Gladwell's thesis that ideas, products, messages and behaviors "spread just like viruses do" remains a metaphor as he follows the growth of "word-of-mouth epidemics" triggered with the help of three pivotal types. These are Connectors, sociable personalities who bring people together; Mavens, who like to pass along knowledge; and Salesmen, adept at persuading the unenlightened. (Paul Revere, for example, was a Maven and a Connector).

The Apple Ipod was the Tipping Point for Apple, it allowed millions of people and maybe even more importantly youth (Connectors and Mavens) and that was it they are now becoming the preferred producer of Computers, Music Players and even Cell Phones. Also why I believe they market so heavily to college age students, get em while they are young. Ask anyone who knows me and I have probably tried to sell them on Mac.

Just think how many companes out there are trying to find this tipping point.

Thats where Google and facebook come in. Both completely free products but as we have all learned there is no such thing as a free lunch. The owners of Google and facebook are both literally multi-billionaires. How did they manage that with a free product?

Captive Audience.

If they can keep us on their sites we are a captive audience ready to be bombarded with advertisements. If they can take it a step further and know what it is we are intrested in by say ready our emails ad seeing what we talk about with our friends well then they can give us more relevant advertising.

If you are a business owner would you rather play a commercial on tv to millions and have it relate to just a few. Or would you rather spend you money pointy your adds directly at those who you know are interested in your product? And maybe more importantly advertise to you in the moment you are thinking about said product.

Well lets get to the point of this thing. The next company that will rule the net will be the one who will be able to harness the power or crowds and let them advertise or sale products for them for free.

Thats what happens when you and I find something online and like it then tell our friends about it. Google and Facebook are developing ways to do that even more conveniently. You can hardly find something online that doesn't have the ability to share it with others.

So who ever can pull in the largest number of friend groups and allow them to share things (Products) easily will win the Internet. They will create tipping points by harnassing crowds with connectors mavens and salesman.

Is this good or bad? It stated the total was $872 billion, or
$2,898 of credit card debt for every man, woman, and child in the
United States.

This is besides the $1.5 trillion in non-revolving credit, like
auto loans. That equates to an additional $4,984 debt per person.
Simply put we spend money we don't have. So what does the government want us to do? Spend More! They are going to "give" each of us around $600 to go spend to stimulate the economy to keep us out of a recession. Now I am no economist but in my mind this isn't going to work. Maybe it post pones a potential recession.

Now granted I do not think it is the governments job to teach us fiscal responsibility

The Outstanding Public Debt as of 15 Feb 2008 at 06:15:15 AM GMT is:

http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/

I do think they should not train the American people to continue to spend money they do not have. This is no solution to an already major problem. Is this not just another example of postponing todays problems for tomorrows leaders.

All that aside here is the biggest problem with this plan. This money we are suposedly getting magically from the government has to come from somewhere. And it does... from what I have been reading, comes from your next years tax returns. For example, if a single person were to
receive a $600 rebate check from the government and their 2008 tax
return was supposed to be $900. That person would receive $300.
However, if they were to receive less than a $600 refund in 2008, the
rebate cancels out their refund, and the taxpayer would not owe the
difference.

Thanks but no thanks. Some one please explain to me how this is a good plan.

President Bowen (my mission president in Barcelona Spain from 2000 to 2002) taught us a new way to write goals for our lives. He invited us to find 6-7 Christ like attributes that we would like to improve or emphasize and write a goal from the perspective of what people will say about us after we die. But in first person. Then fins a scripture that shows that quality.
One of the quality's that I wrote was virtuous and one of the lines that I wrote said: "My words and actions are never such as to offend the spirit, even when that might offend others."
For some reason that really impacted me today and as I am writing my new years resolutions it is becoming a theme. I need to remember that all I do in this life is for one singular purpose, "...to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. Moses 1:39" and everything else is just a vehicle for this purpose.
I hope everyone has a happy new year and whether you are a "new years resolution" type of person or not, best wishes in all you hope to accomplish in 2008.

Powered by ScribeFire.

Powered by ScribeFire.

While in that course I was required to use an AP style book while writing. This book is used for a couple reasons, first to help journalist maintain the same style where ever they are and second to help prevent journalists from writing things that will get them in trouble by writing libel.
One of the things that the book said and that my Professor was very adamant about was that when reporting about death that we use direct words like death and died. Words like passed away or passed on were not to be used. I accepted it with no problems as it made perfect sense to me when writing trhings that the General Population would read. Quickly this became part of my regular speech and I stopped using passed on in my speech as well.
I haven't thought about it again until today during General Conference during President Monson's talk. He recounted the story of a lady he worked for as a boy who lost a loved one at war and had no understanding of life after death. I began to question which phrase is more accurate at least with my gospel understanding. Do we really die, or just pass on to another progressive step.
We know that because of the Saviour's Atonement for us the latter is more accurate. We are taught that Christ overcame death for all of us regardless of the choices we make. Being that he overcame death could we say that death no longer truly exists and that what we call death is really nothing more than a passing on? A commencement so to speak?
By no means am I arguing that we remove the word death from our vocabulary but with our Gospel understanding I hope I recognize the difference in my speech so that I might more fully have an Eternal Perspective at all times.

Powered by ScribeFire.

It's funny because I remember as a kid I hated Conference Weekend. It wasn't just conference it was a whole weekend. Not only did it last 2 hours but it was twice a day and I had to give up my Saturday as well.
Now when I say "when I was a kid" this means until I was 18 years old. As I started getting ready to serve a mission I realized I needed to be better prepared. I had a TV in my room and decided it was time for that to go. I still remember my dad being really proud of me for taking that out of my room which I thought was weird because I had no idea that he didn't like it there. Yet after I took it out I realized how much easier it was to focus.
Also I decided I need to learn how to work hard so I moved down to Mesa to live with Karl and Kellie and Work With David and Karl framing Houses. Well I learned fast that this really was hard work and i still joke with David how I will never do that again. I truly believe that it made me a better missionary.
I am sure there are more things I did to prepare but those are two things that stick out in my memory. I say that because before I did that I did one thing that I believe set me on that path. I went to Conference.
I didn't o to Conference in Utah I went to the stake center, but I actually went. I got dressed up and went to the church for all three sessions on Saturday and Both on Sunday. I even dragged friends with me to different sessions. I took notes and suprise suprise I loved it. Ever since Conference is one of my most treasured times of the year. I honestly believe it helped change my life especially as l prepared for my future life as a missionary.
Ever since that weekend before my mission I have looked forward to Conference with great anticipation. I love to hear President Hinckley welcome everyone to conference and say what a wonderful sight it is, to talk about all the millions participating all over the globe. I love to watch all the new Seventy's take their place on the stand and today we will see a new member of the twelve and First Presidency.
I look forward to sustaining these new leaders as witnesses of Christ. I look forward to hearing the talks especially the ones that will call me out and inspire me to change. I look forward to calling Caleb and saying what did you think of that? Or what does that mean? I look forward to priesthood session and being with the other priesthood brethern as we get to listen to the whole first presidency and listen as they let their guards down just a little more. I look forward to getting the Conference issue of the Ensign where I can go back and gain new insights that i missed the first time and look for those small comments that don't get printed like last conferences comment by Pres. Packer about the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. :)
I hope everybody enjoys conference today.

Powered by ScribeFire.

I doubt that it will be as good as the book but they never are. This is a book about 2 boys in Afghanistan that shouldn't be friends but are as close as brothers when something happens that causes their lives to change forever. There is one part that is pretty graphic and I have had this conversation with a couple people about whether it is necessary or not. Now I believe if its not in the book then it isn't the same. Life is not easy and bad things happen even if we pretend that they don't. I believe this is written in a very tasteful ad real way, and a way that makes you feel the pain of these boys. The book goes on through out their lives and we can see how their lives are affected by this one single experience. Another reason I love the book is because it is written by a native of Afghanistan who gives us a great picture into what it would be like to grow up there and realize the great blessing it is to live in America. I doubt this has convinced any one to read the book and thats ok. It is still my favorite novel and when the movie comes out I will definitely make the trip to see it. I thought it was so funny i'm posting it. I think he should think about writing a book.

I have to tell you about this dream because it's been in my head all day.

Imagine a war-torn Holbrook Arizona. The enemy has ravaged and controls most of the town. Our adventure begins at Farrs Downtown Shell where several Holbrook citizens have convened to make a stand against the enemy. Lane Farr and Kyle Gardner are among those who will not live under the yoke of enemy bondage. I’ll call our heroes in the resistance movement “The Wolverines” like in the 1980’s box office hit Red Dawn.

(Background) Among the enemy’s goals is one to take over the means of transportation, and to gather all large vehicles for their war effort. Semi trucks and Busses are on the top of their list. Consequently the resistance movement is searching out the same vehicles to deprive the enemy and aid in their resistance movement.

And now we join the wolverines in deliberation on the corner of Navajo and Hopi.

During their gathering, the wolverines learn of a bus that has not fallen into enemy hands. They make plans to take the bus into the foothills of Holbrook near the golf course to keep it away from the enemy.

Doped up on adrenaline and knowing that any further deliberation would be futile, Kyle and Lane ran to the bus. Kyle took his place behind the wheel and set off down Hopi Blvd. The very sound of the engine starting turned enemy ears from miles away. Within 30 seconds, the quiet road-blocked street turned into a hornets nest of enemy small arms fire and preparations to stop the bus.

For Kyle, there was no break pedal. Ever gaining speed, He weaved the bus in and out of wrecked cars, smashing into buildings and laying waste to road blocks whose constructors proved no match for the 14 ton wrecking ball at Kyle’s disposal.

Kyle and Lane had never been so scared in their lives. Their fear however, was swallowed up by the rage they felt toward the intruders and by the sense of purpose to accomplish their mission.

Passing West end park, Kyle and Lane felt they were home free. While the enemy had strong control of the down town sector of Holbrook, they placed little emphasis on the outskirts of town. To their horror, the chase continued. The air was thick with chaos and only Kyle’s experience behind the wheel kept our hero’s from losing the bus (and their lives) to the enemy.

By this time the, the bus was going as fast as it had gone up until this point in the chase. Somehow, the remaining chasers managed to force the bus into an embankment which resulted in a thunderous crash throwing Kyle and Lane and causing a cloud of dust which further intensified the confusion. To ad to that, the concussion had caused the buss’ gears to break down and they couldn’t move anywhere. Lane was mortified. In a split second, a hundred thoughts ran through his head. “This is it” he thought “as if the chase wasn’t scary enough.” “At least during the chase we were moving and there was a chance at success for the mission and life”, “It’s all over, the enemy will close in, and we’ll be done for”

Grasping his AK 47 assault rifle, Lane prepared for the onslaught that was about to ensue. With only one clip of 30 rounds, their final defense would be meager and ill-fated.

But then, in a moment of desperation, Kyle who had this whole time been frantically prying at knobs and controls of the bus, jammed the gear shifter into reverse causing the bus to come alive with noise from the blaring motor. Now in reverse, Kyle sped the bus up along the side of the embankment and on to the top of a hill. They were driving so fast that they didn’t even realize till mid air, that there was a steep 60ft drop off on the other side of the hill. The bus crashed to the ground and rolled eventually coming to rest right side up on it’s wheels.

By now, the sun was all but set and the light was low. After gaining control and absorbing everything that had just happened, Lane gazed up at the cliff that they had just fallen from and saw enemy figures and vehicles appearing against the light of sun down. The enemy was looking down at the bus. Within moments, the vehicles drove away. Lane concluded that they were going to find a way down to them.

The bus was away from the enemy stronghold down town. While they didn’t make it to where they had originally hoped to, Kyle and Lane had successfully gotten the bus out into the desert foothills were other resistance members could come and fix it later. From here, our hero wolverines set out on foot, running through the dirt and sagebrush up toward Spurlock hill. Lane, being the more athletic navy-seal type of the two, ran out ahead with his AK 47 and Kyle not too far behind him ran with his WWII 5-shot rifle.

After some time, Lane slowed and looked behind him to find Kyle standing on the other side of a small mound of dirt. “Why is he standing there?” Lane thought to himself. Realizing that the situation was volatile and that there may be trouble Lane refrained from talking but rather crept back toward Kyle who was facing him. Only Kyle’s face and shoulders were visible as he stood there eyes locked on Lane. Lane stopped and tried to make sense of the situation. “What is he doing? “ Lane thought in the Silence. Just then, in true Jason Bourne style, Kyle swung his rifle behind him firing two shots in rapid succession. Lane hurried over the mound to find two enemy soldiers’ bodies drop to the ground not 10 feet behind Kyle.

What happened next is unknown, but we can probably imagine that our heroes eventually killed all of the bad guys and they probably built huge statues of them in Holbrook marking their heroic efforts in stopping the enemy during the battle for Holbrook.

My Graduating class was the largest in the history of the school at a whopping 150 something, and to top things off I was in the top 10% of my class and this after getting kicked out of National Honors Society. But I was not prepared to take on the world or even a university for that matter. Sad to say but I didn’t feel capable.

I want to start a new class to help change this inferior complex. Why not have a practical application class. My mother and I were talking recently about how drastically the world has changed since she was a kid. She tells the story of the first time she saw a TV. This is a good thing right? Most of us love the advances we have today and would not want to go back to the way things were done even in the 90’s. I agree but why hasn’t education advanced with the rest of society.

Lets have a class where we can start our own think tank. A practical think tank. I have been taught in a number of education classes that as teachers we have the responsibility to inspire critical thinking. I don’t know if my teachers didn’t get this message or just set there expectations way to low. I never felt stretched in School at least not in things that interested me. What interests me? Practical Application! Why not start a wiki. Write a book. Visit a with a congressman and share ideas. Invent a product and market it. There are thousands of ideas out there and most of them are in the brains of our students. Just look at the incredible opportunities web 2.0 are bringing the world. Why not show students that this simple maybe even crazy ideas can become a reality with a little determination.

I want to create an environment of ingenuity fueled by belief and commitment. Masterminds is the class of today!

For a long time I have heard it said that the world will continue to get more and more wicked so the righteous will have to not only maintain their standards but get better. For a long time I have simply accepted this as reality and have definitely seen the wicked march farther into self destruction. The righteous getting better has not been quite as visible for me.

Recently I have heard the same talk again that I have heard ever since I can remember talks. It was on putting on the armor of God. One of the ways to put on the armor of God is to read your scriptures.

For some reason on this last occasion it hit me how important it is to read in the morning. If we wait until the end of the day its like we are putting the armor on after the battle is over. What good is that going to do?

In days past it was good enough to just read at night and that would have been enough protection to last but in times as they are its not good enough anymore. Now you need to pay more attention to the timing of things. When we do things.

I truly believe this is a mystery revealed for me. The timing of obeying God’s commandments is how I can not only maintain my standards but raise the bar. While it obviously applies to scripture study I also believe its is equally important in things like home teaching and praying. I am resolving to be more aware of when I do things and not just of what I do.
