Happy Spring My Friends!

The glorious delicate hint of the warm sun has finally worked its way through the cold winter sky. Love, love this time of year!

I thought on this last day of March I would offer a small collection of some late winter and early Spring blooms that I have photographed.

I do not often "play" with my photographs after I make them, but lately I have been doing a little experimenting with textures, cross processing, and some other techniques.

Sharing my LOVE this week with some of these friends.

Silence

These misty and melancholy last days of the year seem like an appropriate time to share a few nautical inspired photographs I made in Marblehead, Massachusetts this past summer.

The idea I had when shooting these scenes was to create a series of images for my father-in-law, a former Marine, who loves nautical art. {For Christmas I printed the collection into note cards for him.}

With some photo editing and an added texture titled, "Silence" {created by Kim Klassen} the quiet colours of the solitary sail boats in this still New England harbor became painterly.

This work is a little different from what I usually create, but I do like how these images turned out and am offering them for sale here on My Front Porch ~ not sure if they will end up in my Etsy shop. Vintage Sheet Music & Satin Kissing Balls

Recently I was at a local sale of old and beautiful things for the historic preservation society in my town and found these ivory satin balls stashed behind some other items on a table. They were so soft and pretty that I purchased them knowing that I could embellish them further with some treasures I had in my studio.

Using original vintage sheet music that I also purchased locally at "The Old Book Sale" earlier this year, I punched out blooms and got to work. The result are these lovely vintage sheet music and satin kissing balls will sing beauty in your home, on a wedding gift {as I recently did for a cousin who is a musician}, or on your winter white Christmas tree.

Each vintage satin ball is approximately two and a half inches in diameter and entirely covered with vintage sheet music blooms. Each bloom is punched from the original sheet music, not copies! The double blooms are attached to the satin ball with a pretty matte white corsage pin.

I personally hand dyed and scrunched the vanilla cream seam binding ribbon from which you may hang the ball. A flouncy bow with streamers hangs from the bottom of each kissing ball and is adorned with a sparkle bead.

Each one is handmade and unique; therefore no two are exactly the same. Please allow for slight variances from what are shown in the photographs.

Spring Fling Totes

Hey Friends,

Just a quick hello and wishing you a happy Spring!

I know I usually post my original hand made creations here on My Front Porch, however I just finished making these fabulously fun, fresh, and functional totes for my Zazzle shop.

Each is printed with one of my hand painted watercolour and gouache designs {the originals are for sale, by the way} on a cotton canvas tote bag.

These are perfect for the beach, farmer's market, or even a bright and cheerful book bag for your child to take to school.

They are all customizable and you may also select different styles and sizes of the totes. These shown are the "budget" tote and I chose this size because the design fits just right on it.

A Cupcake Christmas

Darling holiday wall décor for any room in your home, these paintings were first illustrated in pen and ink, and then hand painted in gouache and watercolour on Strathmore acid free, cold press 140 lb. watercolour paper. The original image size is approximately 5” x 7”. The originals are still available. If you are interested in those, please e-mail me.

These are printed in my studio on 8 ½” x 11" Kodak Ultra premium high gloss 74 lb. photographic paper. The image size is approximately 5” x 7" with a white border allowing for framing. The colour is as intense and the originals and they fit perfectly into a standard frame. Another option is to mat them to a larger format and place them in a larger frame or hang with simple glass and clips.

A Rosie Outlook for the New Year

Usually I post original creations on My Front Porch, but I could not resist showing you my new 2012 P I N K calendar.

As some of you may know...I have a deep affection for HOT pink and also love the tender blushing Paris pinks. I do not have much pink in my home, except a few bold punches here and there in my studio and during the holidays, nor to I have much in my wardrobe, but I do love the colour.

January ~ April

This calendar shows off twelve of my favorite photographs of P I N K ! Blush pink tea roses, coral pink Valentines, hot pink Gerbera daisies and hand painted Easter eggs.

May ~ August

Pink that's almost red as a ripe strawberry, Sarah Bernhardt peony pink, the colour of the year {2011, that is) honeysuckle pink, and the playful pink beach toys we find along the sandy shore.

September ~ December

Rustic pink stucco walls, melon pink mountain roses, and sparkly crystal pink Christmas balls grace this calendar month by month.

This is my newest calendar and it is available in my Zazzle shop along with several other 2012 calendars. I also offer all of these images as individual matted photographs ~ just send me an e-mail if you are interested.

A Shabby Country French~Inspired Collection

Hello friends!

It has been a creatively busy two months as I was preparing for the Once Upon A Dream event that took place in Asheville, NC last weekend. I have created a collection of "Prairie Pretties" ~ the name I have given this group of shabby country French~inspired decorative home goods, party favors, and mini art inspiration kits ~ in keeping with the theme of the event.

I have a few pieces left from the vendor market and I thought that I would give you the chance of seeing them here first before I list them in my Etsy shop.

These sweet petite cotton frames are coffee and tea stained. Each frame is embellished with soft creamy velvet millinery blooms and gorgeous hand dyed and scrunched French vanilla seam binding. {I just purchased a pile of this wonderful ribbon from French Market.} All of these luscious notions are attached to the frame with a large brass quilting pin.

There is a single white pearl at the bottom of the frame and on the back of each there is a little dove stamped in permanent sepia ink.

These darling indoor plant stakes were painted with black chalk paint, then I added some sparkle and wrapped them with gardener's twine. They make a perfect gift for a gardener or even better, as individual "place cards" at each place setting on a table for a garden party.

These simple ivory taper candles are not so simple after I wrapped them in embossed paper tied with gardener's twine.

A tiny white paper rosette is placed right above the bow for added "prettiness." The contrast of textures on the candles is so lovely when placed in tarnished sterling silver candle holders.

How about some delicate confetti sparkles for your winter celebration. I filled these natural brown hen eggs with jeweled confetti then sealed up the eggs with layers of flowers cut from unbleached coffee filters and painted with glittery glue.

They are pretty in a vintage wrought iron egg basket or fun to crack open and sprinkle on a friend. {I think that these would be fun at a wedding too.}

A Tropical Paradise

These original paintings inspired by the tropical colours of the rain forests and jungles are my latest collection of little works of art that I am offering here on My Front Porch.

Stunning as a collection or just in small groups of two, three, or four, these petite paintings are darling for a child's room or bright sun room.

Each is painted on Strathmore acid free 140 pound cold press watercolour paper and painted by hand using my favorite paint medium ~ gouache.

This series of critters and tropical plant life is painted with the full intensity of the gouache, which is a denser and more opaque paint than watercolour, therefore allows for so much more saturation of colour on the paper.

I think these abstract peonies are my favorite out of the entire collection.

But this purple parrot makes me smile too.

These whimsical birds are from my All Gouached Up!™ collection. I hand illustrated the originals in pen and ink on heavy watercolour paper, and then painted each drawing with gouache.

After much thought and encouragement I have decided to offer prints of these original gouache and watercolour paintings I made several years ago.

I painted this collection of funky chairs on a whim and loved them so much that I have had them hanging in my home for years. One of my friends once offered me a significant handful of cash for them and I politely refused {although I did make her some small prints of them which she thoroughly enjoyed...but she still wanted the originals}.

While these originals are...well, priceless and I am keeping them, I am now offering the paintings in petite five by five inch prints. {The size is just perfect for ready made mats and frames that may be found at many craft and art supply stores.}

Chicken Wire & Canvas MIllinery Flower Frame

My altered frame, adorned with the basics of chicken wire, canvas, and mother of pearl buttons has been returned to me from Somerset Life.

And…now that I no longer need it for displaying my art work, it is for sale.

Sixteen of my signature hand made natural cotton canvas millinery flowers with mother of pearl button centers cover this 17” square frame. Two layers of chicken wire are attached to the back of the frame and create a perfect backdrop for just about anything.

The frame hangs by two two-inch ribbons of canvas tied in a floppy bow. The frame may be hung using a standard over the door hanger or a hook. It also looks great hanging from a door knob. With this frame, you will also receive a flower clothes pin to use as the finishing touch on the bow.

What can you do with this treasure? Once an abandoned and unattractive wooden frame, it is now a charming shabby chic work of art to hang on its own or use as an inspiration board or a place to hang jewelry, memos, ACEOs, photographs, or a pretty pearl monogram letter.

The fusion of natural materials and the juxtaposition of textures makes this chicken wire canvas millinery frame simply charming and befitting to almost any décor.

Italian Inspired...

Pretty and practical, these matchbook style pocket books fit perfectly in your handbag, tote, or coat pocket. And with twenty pages of acid free paper they are a lovely booklet for sketching an idea or jotting down a note.

Espresso Bean

This first series of note books are Italian inspired with patterns, textures, and motifs reminiscent of the renaissance, medieval Rome, glazed stucco, ancient gardens, and frescoed walls.

Ancient Gardens

Venetian reds, soft pink stucco of Baroque villas, patina greens of ancient Italian gardens, Amalfi coastal blues, opulent gilded golds, Tuscan sunflower yellows, rich espressos, and the creamy shades of Carrera marble are some of the monochromatic colour schemes I have chosen for this collection.

Amalfi Coast

Each is made using recycled commercial wall covering samples as the cover stock. As an interior designer I have access to some fabulous products and when they are discontinued, I get to keep them! These elegant wall papers are so durable you can even wipe them clean with a damp cloth if your latte should spill on the cover.

Botticelli Rose

Both the inside and outside cover are finished with the pretty paper. Inside the front cover there is a small embellished pocket filled with five two inch square notes ~ just the right size to pen a phone number. The booklets are bound with a coordinating ribbon tied in a bow and a delicate scalloped edge is hand cut along one edge of the booklet where it folds over and “locks” shut with a Velcro dot.

Carrera Marble

They make wonderful brides gifts, hostess gifts, party favors, and amenities for an overnight guest.

Each finger towel is hand ripped and sewn out of 100% white cotton twill. The sides of the towels are folded over and carefully machine stitched and the other edges have a soft torn fringe.

The millinery flower is three layers of natural flax coloured Irish linen and white cotton twill with a pretty mother of pearl button hand sewn in the center.

Of course these frivolous necessities would not be complete without a hand stamped crown and tiara on a cotton tag ~ each attached to the towels with a large brass quilting pin and soft toffee coloured satin bow.

These would make beautiful hostess or house warming gifts and compliment an elegantly traditional, shabby chic, cottage farm, or Scandinavian interior...

...or even a palace!

Notes to Cherish

These wooden clip boards are the newest addition to my natural home goods collection.

The clips on each wooden board are adorned with my signature hand sewn cotton canvas millinery flower and mother of pearl button. I have also added a hand stamped softly torn canvas tag which is attached with a brass quilting pin and a luxurious creamy mocha satin bow.

I sell these in sets of two ~ a large clip board on which to W R I T E and a smaller memo board for N O T E S.

Each wooden board is stamped in black ink with a crown and tiara.

As a final detail, a band of cotton twill printed ribbon wraps the bottom of each board with the words Beautiful and CHERISH.

These are wonderful holiday gifts for teachers and home office essentials for working women, girlfriends, and just about anyone who wants to make their life more beautiful and cherish each day.
