Before you clean your closet, you have to stop shopping!

You can't keep adding inventory to your closet if you're trying to clean it out. It just makes the process worse. If you really can't hold off on shopping until your closet is clean, here are a few questions you should probably ask yourself.

Do I already own something like it?
Can I alter something I already own to look like it?
Where will I wear it?
Do I really need it?
What will I have to forgo later because I spent my money on this?

The last question is simple! You could have spent your money on organizational items, or even saved it!

Just ask yourself questions before you purchase anything because not only is it saving you money, it's saving you room. Especially in that closet of yours.

What do I have?
What do I need?
What do I want?

All these questions! AHHHHH right? Well it's worth it

Closet Cleaning 101 Part 1

As you may already know I offer closet cleaning (jmcstudio) as a service. Some of my readers aren't from Connecticut though and would like some tips on how to manage their closets. So on this super lazy Sunday I've decided to stay in bed and blog about what I do to organize and add inventory to my closet. As with any project you start you have to plan, organize, schedule and strategize. Sounds pretty funny but hey I think it's necessary. So! With that said enjoy the blog entries I have in store for today!

Wearing Shoes

Don't wear the same shoes every day. When you alternate your pairs, it allows shoes to dry between wearing. It eliminates smell, and of course makes them last longer. You produce moisture on the inside of your shoe, in case you were wondering why I stated to let them dry. You should let them dry for at least 2 days if they got wet and soaked through to the inside.

Book I don't recommend- Marketing With Email

This book vows to show you how to recruit new customers, where to look, how to set up a network, which none of those were addressed.

This book is for someone who already has over 1000 people in their contacts, and it has great tutorials on how to make a tutorial in publisher.

For me, I wouldn't recommend anyone that is just starting up to waste their time reading this. Most of the people now a days are savvy enough to create a news letter anyways, and I feel as if Publisher is outdated especially when we can use Illustrator or Photoshop.

I don't know it's simply my opinion.

Sewing Tip, How to Trim Closely

"Palms Up!"

With this palms up technique you can trim close to any seam or edge. I prefer trimming with 5 inch trimmers, but you can also use larger sheers.

Hold the seam in your left hand and the scissors in your right hand. Slip the lower blade under the raw edges. With both palms up and the scissors almost parallel to the garment seam line, trim close to the edge stitching.

---Remember to keep the scissors almost parallel to the garment when trimming closely.

How to Edge Stitch

How to edge stitch It's easy to edge stitch evenly and close to a folded or garment edge.

---Change your machine presser foot to a wide straight stitch or edge stitch food.

---Align the folded edge or seam line with the inside edge of the foot, and set your stitch length at 2.0 mm.

--- Stitch 1/16 inch from the folded edge or seam line.

If you don't have an edge stitch foot, use a zigzag foot and reset the needle so it's on the extreme right hand side.

Fabric Chalk Alternatives

As you know, I'm all about working with what I have. If you don't have fabric chalk, or you lost it in the pile of fabric in your sewing station, using small soap pieces will do the trick just fine.

You may lose your chalk, but you know exactly where your soap is :)

I hate thimbles!

I know I'm not the only one... Come on!!!!
Do you really want metal that comes off easily? I hate needle pricks, calluses and all the "perks" that come with being a sewer.

My bright idea, is.... BANDAGES!!!!! yeah really simple, really cheap. It doesn't slip off, and when you're done after 6+ hours of sewing just take it off.

Make sure the padding is where the needle would normally hit, otherwise whats the use!

Avoid Fraying When You Purchase New Fabric

It's probably not a secret!!!!!!!

When you buy fabric, do you notice the ends fray? This doesn't happen to every fabric, but a select few. So my idea and maybe millions of others is to simply... Ready for this??? Ready??

Serge the ends with a serge machine. It's quick and easy!

How to prevent runaway beads

We just had a disaster zone, when a bag of really small round beads fell. I'm not exaggerating when I tell you it took days to pick up. So I have a new method of dealing with beads.... Sticky Paper!

When I'm beading on fabric, I use sticky back paper to keep my beads contained. I cut a piece of contact shelf liner, about 8x12 inches (like a piece of paper) and remove the protective paper from the adhesive side. I place the paper sticky side up on a padded board, and pin or tape it to each of the boards corners. I then spread the bead on the sticky paper and they stay put!!

So I get to fit in my favorite chair while I bead away!
