The Duke and The Duchess of Cambridge visited the Emirates Arena, one of the sites for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, The Quarriers Stopover project and the Donald Dewar Leisure Centre, Drumchapel, Glasgow. The Quarriers Stopover project is purpose built short stay accommodation for homeless teenagers, consisting of 14 bedsits.

The Duke of Cambridge gave a speech at the Donald Dewar Leisure Centre :

"Catherine and I have thoroughly enjoyed spending part of this afternoon with you all at this impressive Donald Dewar Leisure Centre.

Catherine - who, you may have noticed, is limited a little in the sports she can play right now - has had to hold herself back from grabbing a tennis racquet and challenging me to a full game. I am far too much of a gentleman to say who would win (but you all saw for yourselves!).

Catherine, Harry and I are so proud - through our Foundation - to partner with Glasgow Life and the Hunter Foundation on this Coach Core programme. Coach Core is a simple idea which, we hope, will have far-reaching results.

Just a short time here at this Leisure Centre leaves me in no doubt that the role models to whom young people can aspire are not just out there - on the television or in magazines or in professional sport - but right here in Drumchapel, and in countless other neighbourhoods up and down the Country.

The energy and brilliance of young coaches has the ability, like nothing else, to inspire others - to improve self-esteem and competitiveness, to channel natural aggression, to build respect for others and yourself, to improve health, and to teach new and creative ways of thinking. I sincerely hope that some of you here today will be inspired to begin to coach others, and - in so doing - sow the seeds for future generations to follow in your example.

A modern, attractive, well run hub like the Donald Dewar Leisure Centre, under the Glasgow Life umbrella, provides the perfect setting for this Coach Core programme - and perhaps elsewhere across Scotland in the future.

Glasgow is a city with a great buzz and enormous optimism.

The Commonwealth Games here next year will be brought to life by Glasgow's youthful energy, creativity, and its unrivaled cultural heritage. Glasgow would also be tremendous host - if successful, as we hope you are - for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, continuing the legacy from last year. Thank you to Keith and all at Glasgow Life, and to Sir Tom and Lady Hunter for being so generous in your support.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your sports here today.

The Duchess of Cambridge, who is a volunteer in the Scout Association, attended a volunteer training day at the Great Tower Scout Camp, Newby Bridge, Cumbria. She used her training to help look after a group of 24 Cub Scouts taking part in a pack holiday event. As part of their programme, the Cub Scouts, from Cumbria and Manchester, got a chance to try out tree-climbing, belaying, outdoor cooking and fire-lighting.

The Duchess wore a khaki Barbour 'Belford' jacket, blue jeans, and a brown and white check Baker Boy cap from Really Wild. She also appears to be wearing a navy gilet and beige jumper/sweater, which will be much needed in the snow. The Duchess was also wearing her Le Chameau Vierzon Nord wellingtons. It was reported that the Duchess purchased some cream and khaki items whilst in TopShop earlier this month, so perhaps she is wearing some of those today?

The Duchess of Cambridge visited Baker Street tube station with the Queen and Prince Philip this morning, to mark the 150th anniversary of London Underground. The Duchess was given a 'Baby on Board' badge/pin - expectant mothers can obtain them at Tube stations, by emailing their full name and address to babyonboard@tfl.gov.uk or by calling 0843 222 1234!

The Duchess wore a blue coat by Malene Birger (from 2006 and no longer available) with her black suede Episode 'Angel' shoes and Cornelia James 'Bow Cocktail' black gloves . Her earrings are sapphire and diamonds, and she wore a black hat.

Catherine presented shamrock to Officers and Guardsmen, and the Royal couple visited the Guardsmen's cookhouse and took lunch privately in the Officers' Mess before departing. During the parade, Catherine got her heel caught in the drain cover - something we can all identify with!

The Duchess of Cambridge visited Grimsby for a number of solo engagements. The town is situated on the Humber estuary in North Lincolnshire, and legend has it that it was founded by a Danish fisherman 'Grim' in the 9th Century. In the 1950's the town was the busiest fishing port in the world, but has since been in decline, although it still one of the largest centres for fish processing in the UK.

The Duchess toured the National Fishing Heritage Centre, and learnt about Grimsby's fishing heritage and modern day sustainable fishing. She then visited Park Lane Fire Station, where she met young people who are on a course run by Prince Charles' charity, The Prince's Trust . Later, she officially opened Havelock Academy, and then took a tour of the school.

The Duchess wore her Hobbs 'Celeste' coat (no longer available) and black Episode 'Angel' shoes and clutch . Her dress is by Great Plains, and is possibly the 'Cezanne.s paintbox pleated dress' now £30 reduced from £75.

Stocks of the Great Plains dress are running low, but a similar skirt and top are still available.

Kate was presented with a teddy bear by local well-wisher Diana Burton. The Duchess told her: “Thank you, I will take that for my d...” before hastily stopping herself.

Sandra Cook was standing next to Diana, and she said to Catherine: “You were going to say ‘daughter’, weren’t you?”

“Catherine replied, ‘No… we don’t know’.

“Then I said, ‘Oh I think you do’ to which she said, ‘We’re not telling’.”

Apartment 1A Kensington Palace - Catherine Duchess of Cambridge

As some of you may know, Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace is being refurbished for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The Duke and Duchess are currently using the two bedroom Nottingham Cottage, which is in the grounds of Kensington Palace (KP), and Prince Harry will be moving there from Clarence House when Apartment 1A is completed in mid 2013.

Princess Margaret lived in the Apartment from the 1960's, which was the last time it was refurbished, and she appointed Lord Snowdon's uncle, Oliver Messel, a stage designer, to redecorate in pinks and turquoise. Messel designed for the Royal Ballet, and ballet was a passion of Princess Margaret's, so one of his most famous designs was for 'The Sleeping Beauty' in 1946.

I recall when Prince William was born, and this photo of Princess Diana, Prince Charles and 'Wills' sparked a great deal of interest in the fabrics, wallpaper and furniture that Diana had chosen for KP! I am still amused by the cocktail bar in the background.

About £1m is being spent on the 20 room apartment, including new plumbing, wiring and the removal of asbestos. There is a walled garden, so Catherine will be able to to continue to grow potatoes and other vegetables and fruit, and make homemade jam. It will be the perfect London base for their new family, and there is plenty of room for the staff they may need once baby arrives.

A favourite for the job of redecorating the Apartment 1A is Annabel Elliot, the Duchess of Cornwall’s sister, who carried out the refurbishment on Clarence House. You can see from the photo below that her style is informal and comfortable - I can see the Duke and Duchess choosing something like this, but we will have to wait and see!

The Duchess of Cambridge is the Patron of Action on Addiction, and visited their premises in Clapham, Hope House, a Grade II listed Georgian House. The home treats up to 23 women who are recovering from substance abuse, when they have already undergone detoxification and first stage treatment.

The Duchess wore a grey and white wrap dress from Max Mara, with her Episode 'Angel' black pumps and accessorised with her Asprey Button pendent and Annoushka Pearl Earrings. Both the dress and shoes are sold out ladies, sorry. It's good to see the Duchess looking radiant and well again.

The Duchess had a message for '100 Women in Hedge Fund's, who support Action on Addiction :

"I am enormously grateful to 100 Women in Hedge Funds for their support of Action on Addiction this year. I have seen already, through their previous work with William's charities, how the fundraising effort and philanthropic support of this incredible organisation can be simply transformational for the charities it helps.

Those affected by addiction are in desperate need of the highest level of care and treatment; Action on Addiction delivers this brilliantly. Whether direct or indirect, the impact of addiction can be devastating. It affects millions of people. The Duchess was out shopping again last Wednesday 30th January. According to US Weekly, she visited Boots the chemist, Selfridges for yoga leggings, and Reiss for jumpers (sweaters). She's also purchased maternity clothes, picking up items at JoJo Maman Bebe, a London boutique, and ordering from ASOS Maternity Line.

The Duchess wore her 2010 Zara check cape again (now sold out), skinny black jeans, black jumper, black pashmina and possibly chocolate coloured Really Wild Seville Suede boots.

It has recently been reported that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be gifted the 10–bedroom Anmer Hall, on the Sandringham estate, as their country home. The building is Grade II listed, and close by a scheduled monument. It is currently being leased by James Everett until March 2017, and was probably chosen because it can be easily kept secure and private. I recall in the late 1970’s that Chevening House in Kent was rejected as a suitable home for Prince Charles , and the unofficial reason was that it was not private enough, and indeed much of the house and grounds can be viewed from nearby roads.

From planning documents submitted on 10 December 2012, we know that some building work is being planned for Anmer Hall.

· New longer private driveway will cut across an existing field used as grazing land, before reaching the front of the house which has its own swimming pool and tennis court.

· Installation of electric gates

· Relocation of the swimming pool

· Extensive planting of trees and shrubs, some of which will be done on the existing driveway, which is to be ripped up to form part of the front garden.

· Moving the main gates for the house further down a lane, so members of the public will not be able to get so close to it.

· New garden room to be built onto the kitchen

· A pergola made of stone columns with oak beams for plants to grow through and provide shade on a patio.

· Extending an existing garage block to form an equipment room.

· It is also proposed to turn a wood store into 'accommodation', which could possibly be used by police guarding the couple.

It is believed the work will be carried out by Charles Morris, who has previously worked for the Prince of Wales, and who is the great great grandson of Sir John Kelk, who built the Royal Albert Hall.
The Duke and Duchess use Kensington Palace as their London base, and will be moving into refurbished apartments Summer 2013, see my post here.

The Duchess was spotted shopping on the King's Road yesterday, where she popped into Pret a Manger for a croissant. We don't know which shops she visited, but there is always Duke of York Square, which has a number of the Duchess' favourite shops, including Zara, Whistles, LK Bennett, Jack Wills and of course the department store Peter Jones is nearby.
The Duchess wore a 2010 Zara check cape (now sold out), skinny jeans and possibly black pumps/ballet flats.

UPDATE 29 January
The London Evening Standard reports that the Duchess was looking for maternity jeggings (skinny jeans) in Gap on Friday, but could not find her leg length. You can find some GAP maternity jeggings below.

Since the Duchess re-styled her hair in November, salons have been inundated with requests for her new fringe (bangs). So what are the key elements of her latest style?

Shiny, chocolate brown tones. To keep coloured hair in tip-top condition, a semi-permanent vegetable or oganic hair dye* is the best choice. For best results, visit your favourite salon.
The Duchess favours Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa, where she keeps her hair conditioned by having Richard Ward's Infusion Blow Dry: Everyday Keratin Infusion, £6.95. This is a multi-vitamin complex which is applied to the hair before blow-drying; the heat helps to infuse the active ingredients deep down into the hair shaft leaving it super glossy. The Duchess also loves Kerastase Rituals, an in-salon treatment range which can do anything from tame hair and define curls, to add volume or strengthen. At home, the Duchess uses Kerastase shampoo and conditioner* for dry hair.

Long, graduated fringe/bangs. A small section of hair from the front, chopped into it at a steep angle, using little snips to soften the effect. Extra layers are chopped into the lower lengths to add texture, volume and bounce. This is best achieved by a stylist at your favourite salon.
Add volume and curl. The Duchess has a stylist on hand to blow-dry her hair into shape. If you don't have your own personal stylist on stand-by, blow-dry hair roughly until about 90 per cent dry, then spritz with volumising spray at the roots, or apply volumising mousse. Set the hair with large heated rollers, such as Babyliss* , and leave to cool.

Style. Remove the heated rollers when cool, and roughly style the hair with your fingers to tease out the curls. If you brush you hair at this point, you will lose curl and definition, so resist the temptation! (Unless you want a 1940's look!)

UPDATED: Baby due in July - Catherine Duchess of Cambridge

St James's Palace announced today the the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting their baby in July.

"Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to confirm they are expecting a baby in July," said a St James's Palace spokesman. "The Duchess's condition continues to improve since her stay in hospital last month."

It is likely that the Duchess has now had her 12 week scan, so the baby may be due mid-July.

UPDATE: 15 January
It has also been reported that the Duchess will not be making any public engagements for the next month.

UPDATE:
It has been reported in the media that the Duchess is favouring gentle walks with royal pooch Lupo, and Pilates to keep fit during her pregnancy. First Official Painting - Catherine Duchess of Cambridge

The first official painting of the Duchess of Cambridge has been unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery today.

The portrait is by artist Paul Emsley, and took three and a half months using a technique of building thin layers of oil and glazes on canvas.

The Duchess sat for the artist twice, and Mr Emsley also worked from a series of photographs he took of Catherine. Sandy Nairne, the Gallery’s director, chose Mr Emsley to paint the portrait, and the Duchess was also involved in the selection process.

The Duchess was born at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, and is the eldest child of Michael and Carole Middleton. The Duchess of Cambridge was christened at the parish church of St. Andrew’s Bradfield in Berkshire on 20th June 1982.
Today, the Duchess is reported to be spending her birthday privately.
