Devour if you will this escape from urbanization, the XSCAPE is from a time and place unknown to us as of yet, a concept car for 2030. Daily commuting is what this lady is for, flexible and narrow for the condensed spaces of the future. Flexible materials are mixed with solids for a safe ride and trip – this car can also extend horizontally to accommodate more than one rider.

The extension mechanism is integrated into the chassis and the pillar which runs along the roof all the way along until the rear. At the back, a concertina of extended lights and a cluster-like hatch that opens to provide flexible luggage space as well. Each wheel is light and highly fuel efficient, a light stripe runs along each to show the width. Sensors and cameras are installed along the wheels to be viewed from within the car.

Inside you’ll find minimal interface between the occupants and the vehicle. Each mechanism is hidden under spandex-like materials allowing for max movement and flexibility while remaining simple aesthetically as possible. Controls appear and disappear just as easily. Each of the following are retractable so that the driver might enter/exit the vehicle: pedals, dashboard, and steering wheel.

The model you’ll see in the first image is milled out of a high-density yellow foam on a 3 axis CNC machine. The DLO is made of a sheet of 2mm Perspex on a vacuum forming machine, and small parts were made using a rapid prototyping machine. Fantastic!
Take a peek at this brand new vision for the future form of the Corvette. This is a project worked on by a Transportation Design student James Robbins, one where the entire history of the Corvette was researched and the design language and progression was noted and accounted for. The images you’re about to see are what this designer sees as the next logical step in the long line of super sleek, fashionable, ultra sporty vehicles. More images after the break...

In this project the current C6 Corvette proportions were kept, the surface being broken up into interesting sections to further evolve the form. The designer lets us know that these images are the final CAD model built in Autodesk’s AutoStudio and rendered in Keyshot 2. Looks great!
Behold an electric motor vehicle who indeed does fit the mold of “more than meets the eye.” This is no robot though, it’s a compact urban city car, but what’s more is that its rear wheels transform into bikes. Each of these bikes have only a single tire, functioning on the same system as the Segway! The car with the bikes still integrated has a light weight structure, 2 parallel side panels and a bunch of cross panels making the car like a feather yet totally tough.
To separate the bikes from the car, you’ve only to open the rear hood, take the bumper out, set down the stand to keep the car aloft, remove the docking lock, and activate the bike. A couple more features in the car are a solar panel roof, glass panels for side doors, and an overall essence of architecture embedded in the whole structure.
This project is a 2010 Red Dot Design Awards winner!
Iterations and iterations! If there's one thing a tech and design writer cannot possibly ignore or resist, it's Tron. With this brand freaking new movie Tron: Legacy out now, the folks at Disney have basically a sure shot as far as the internet crowd goes, and for the most part, everyone riding on the wave has their own shot at fifteen minutes of fame. Here's a designer taking that opportunity to the max with some alternate Light Cycle designs made for your pleasure!
This project is simply an exercise in enjoyment with designer Wallace Campbell following what he sees as the essential elements included in a Light Cycle, bringing unto the world another iteration with super sweet bright lights and blackness, all you could ever want.
A hubless wheel system, light trail, and glowing accent lights are amongst Campbell's self-imposed rules for the bike. Included also are a set of reality based parameters in place to bring the bike closer to a real world production. Included in this list are a windshield, side view mirrors, ecgonomical seat, and more. There is a faring on the left side of the vehicle but not the right simply in order to show off the turbine style engine.
Rotating 360° is a multi-outlet socket system that allows you to add many sockets to the strip – ala Lego style. The Smart Plus is a combination of a laptop case, projector keyboard and a Smartphone. There is no screen or a dedicated hardrive involved in the setup; the Smartphone itself is the “brains” in this combo. The inside of the case doubles up as a screen and the projector beams images to it or any other surface you desire. All of it together can be used as a laptop, gaming console or a phone.

The phone splits up into two where the bottom half is gaming controls and top touchscreen half, docks with the projector board. The idea for this new system is to do away with unnecessary electronic clutter and use the bare minimum. If nothing else, you can save up on individual internet options for your various devices and use only one for the Smart Plus.via
It’s the cutest little three wheeled vehicle you’ll ever set your eyes on. Do you love camping? How about totally on your own? How about camping totally on your own inside an APE?
The project you’re about to set your eyes on is called the “Bufalino,” and it’s a one-person camper using the APE 50 as its platform. Made for absolute flexibility, the Bufalino contains all the elements needed for living. Only the engine, frame, chasis, and parts of the cab were kept perfectly APE.
The APE is a unique vehicle in that it is exempt from taxes in some countries because of its extremely economical working nature. It is also allowed in certain metropolitan areas that larger cars are not. It uses only a tiny amount of gas. It’s super cute.
Inside the Bufalino you’ll find a bed, two seatings, a cooking zone, basin, relatively lots of storage, a refrigerator, and more.

This entire auto is inspired not only by the De Tomaso past line of cars, but by a fine taylor-made Italian suit as well. De Tomaso cars Pantera and Mangusta are used as inspiration for surface treatments and more.
Instead of giant air intakes supposedly indicating power, the Ghepardo boasts ecoboost technology and methanol fuel cells. Sustainable energy sources are TRUE power. Elegant surface, stands, volume, tensioned lines, and integrated spoilers creating a 0.25 Cd drag. Bottom windows installed to “increase the rear passengers perception of speed.” With a cue from the Magusta, the rear gull wings function as boot cover and rear doors.* *First time I ever saw this feature was Back to the Future 2 on television. For real.
Ghepardo is powered either by a Ford twin-turbo ecoboost 3.5 V6 engine producing 465 bgp or by four electric in-hub fuel cells producing 85 Kw each (combined creating the equivalent of 440 bhp.) Electricity is produced by a methanol fuel cell stack located beneath the 500 liter boot. The entire vehicle measures 4820 mm in length, 1970 mm in height, and has a wheel base of 2990 mm.
AND: Since I am a resident of the Twin Cities in Minnesota, USA, I am required to ask: His Royal Purpleness, Prince, would you call this auto your ride if it were brought to fruition?
So you’ve got one in your MP3 player, yes? Well they’re the worst! When it comes time to integrate, one of the greatest parts of industrial design quite often I must say, there are occasionally concessions that must be made. Designer Dror Goldblum knows this, and in order to save the ever-important voice recorder device from crap-level quality forever, he created this bone!

Goldblum’s voice recorder does the two things every standalone voice recorder should do – record and play sound. It also does the relatively newly important bit, connecting to a computer through USB to transfer the recorded sound files it picked up. It’s got an earphone jack, an optical volume interface, and does a fabulous little flick of the wrist activation sort of deal, exposing and activating the mic as you do so.
Once it’s on, it can stand alone on the table in a sassy little arch while you gaze into the eyes of your professor Dr. Jones.
Don’t let the designer fool you, it’s THREE things in one. This is “Pico,” a projector/video camera, two in one. The third thing is the cuteness. It has a camera for an eye, a projector for another eye, and a microphone for a smile. And what’s that? It’s got fold-out feet so it can stand on its own? Oh my goodness yes. It also has the ability to plug a tripod into it, but that’s neither here nor there. Isn’t this little guy just the most precious thing you’ve ever seen?

Present and record at the same time! The Pico also has the ability to work free of a laptop or other potentially cumbersome computer. Like the rest of this “smart object” generation, this device has the ability to do everything in and of itself. It has a full-size display on the back from whens you can also present on a more personal level.
Optical zoom lens, simple to use interface, compactness, loveliness.
I’ve been watching BBC’s The Genius of Design and it has totally re-educated my perspective of the Industrial Design profession. The genius of design is in offering solutions to a problem in such a way that they don’t compromise on our routine habits. The other aspect of designing that I understood was that it’s not wrong for designers to try and improvise an existing solution, with their own perceptions. Usually I disregard a design submission that is very similar to a published post, but this time around I want to bring out the two and spark a debate on the design challenge.

Problem:
The clothes iron is a fantastic invention and the technique dates back to the ancient Chinese people using pans filled with hot coals to iron out clothes. With electricity and modernization we moved on to regular and steam irons. However one situation remained constant with the advent of new technologies – burning clothes due to carelessness.
Solution:
One solution that we recently saw was the Roly Poly Iron designed by Wonkook Lee. It worked on the rocking principle where weights in the handle pulled back the iron into a standing position, when not in use. A simple enough idea that was worth exploring!
Ironically, I have stumbled upon another similar solution and what’s really weird is that this iron too is called the “Roly Poly”. Like I said we don’t usually publish repetitive ideas, but what makes the second version different from Wonkook’s is derived from my first statement: “offering solutions that don’t compromise on our daily habits.” Roly Poly II has a form that we are very familiar with, it is intuitive and basic. It solves the problem of being careless while ironing by rolling back to the upright position, but in a very logical way.
Would you call Part II a genius of design or are we mature enough to break the mold of conventional norms and adopt designs that are form beyond function?
A QWERTY Keyboard that slides over the iPhone, guarding its edges and syncing in well! Get atop your bike, ride it, then store it. No more leaving it outside for bike thieves to chop up for you, nay! This is “Le Pliable,” a fold-up bike concept by Saul Maret. This one’s based on the central headset position with an X silhouette. Foldable in the frame, saddle, pedals, swingarm, and handlebar.

Depending on where you’ve gotta store it, you can fold one or all of the things I just listed. Do what’s gotta be done! All spare parts are standard, too, so this bike can be repaired easily at any of your local bike shops. Then when you’ve got to lug it around after it’s folded, no worries: the folded position affords a wheel still moving so that you can push it around like a golf caddy.
The hub is basically a station where you can hook up all your computer peripherals and media gadgets and from it a single wire goes into the CPU.
Right at this moment I’m glancing down to where my CPU is, and the mess of wires going into it really looks icky! So will something like this “Change” hub make a difference? Maybe, or maybe I just need some tacking wires to straighten things up. Better still opt for wireless devices!
