Some time ago I had Buffalo Drive Station 1TB external hard drive (In shell there was Western Digital 3.5" Caviar Green HDD). Like all 3.5" external HDD it has AC power adapter and one fine day the lightning hit somewhere near my block, power went off, and after power was on, my external hard drive was broken - click, click, click that was the sound of my 1TB Buffalo I lost all my pictures, music and other kind of memories. I decided that my next hard drive will be without AC power adapter and it will be pocket sized 2.5" external hard drive with USB 3.0. I did some research, and I understand that basically things that makes external HDD different is capacity, design and brand name. I stopped on SILICON POWER DIAMOND D05, because I like design, 640Gb is ok (but you can buy 1Tb) for me Silicon Power is like luxury brand in storage business (I like think so). And this HDD attracted me with 3 years warranty, other manufactures give only 2 years warranty on similar products. Design is solid, I like the fact that fingerprints not stays on cover of HDD.

DIY PC Fan with switch - PC Cooler Mod

Tools: Drill, screwdriver, blank plastic from PC front, wire, tape, switch, PC fan, knife.
Budget: 5$.
Time: ~30 min.

Do you need extra Fan for your PC in times when you do some big project which overheats your PC? But you don't want loud PC case standing in front of you when just surfing the Internet. If so, this post can help you.

The idea of this projects born after situation when I was rendering some videos, but in half of a way of rendering my system rebooted. The reason of this problem was my video card which overheated, so I bought PC Fan to put right before my video card, but I didn't like the fact that now my PC got little bit louder. First I thought that i will connect or disconnect Fan on my purpose. But then I will need to open PC case and it will take some time. And then I got idea that it would be nice to make the fan with switch. Here you can read how it was done. All project is improvisation, I did not have some tools that would be helpful (soldering iron, thermo tape, file), I am not professional. I bought PC fan which you can place where PCI cards of PC stands but this work can be done with any kind of PC fans.

Steps:

1. Get the tools.

2. Cut the wire of PC Fan (you need to cut only one wire, no meter what color it is (because it is not a bomb). I cut red wire, since my extra cable is red).

3. Clean the ends of the wires of PC Fan and wires of the extra cable.

4. Tie the wires of PC Fan and extra cable (if you have soldering iron, then do it that way).

5. Use the tape to wrap the node and then cut the extra cable in the middle.

6. Clean the ends of the extra cable.

7. Integrate switch in blank plasctic of PC Front. I drilled small holes then with knife cutted out hole for switch. You can do this any other way.

8. Tie the ends of extra cable with switch.

9. Use the tape to wrap the node.

10. Put PC fan in place. Put blank plastic with switch in place.

11.Now you have button to turn on/off your PC Fan.
