Photo A Day Challenge - February 2012

I had meant to do this last year, and this is on my "Creative 2012" to-do list, so here we go:

I was reading a wonderful blog called Fat Mum Slim and saw this challenge and I decided that I will join in on the fun. In having my interest focused on sites such as Pinterest, I realize that when I look at various images, ideas come to me very quickly. I also decided that I had wanted to create a photo journal of my life, so this is a great way to start the project. So starting today and for 29 days straight the rules are to photograph:

I can do this!

Here's how to play:

1. Use the list above as inspiration and take a photo everyday. For example for number one on the list, "your view today" you would take a shot of whatever it is that you can see today. This would be a wider shot of your office space, where you went for a walk, or whatever it is that you can see!

2. Share on your blog, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, or where ever it is you want to share. If you're sharing on Instagram or Twitter use the hashtag #FEBphotoaday so everyone playing along can find them. There's a great community around the photo sharing, so do share!

3. Check out everyone else's pictures whenever you get a chance. It's fun to see how different everyone's photos are. These are people from every corner of the world playing.

Hang tight! I decided to move to Wordpress and I'm figuring everything out! I've also been interviewing like crazy, plus interning so I've had a lot on the plate and I CANNOT believe that it's almost February!

Anyway, I haven't forgotten about you all! It's been crazy! But I think 2012 is the YEAR! So give me another week to figure this all out, and we'll be back to normal!

Bah Humbug & Merry Christmas!

Hi everyone!

I know I have been a bad blogger. There's really no excuse for it, but I have been very busy. Let me tell you just how busy I've been. I've been going hard in looking for employment (still nothing, but I am certain the first quarter of 2012 will be a successful one for me, so I keep on keepin' on.) I looked into the volunteering/internships and I found a company to intern for (yes at the tender age of 45, I'm interning. That's another conversation for another time). I signed up for a Microsoft Office Specialist course that starts next month. Not that I really need it, because I know all Office applications, but considering most companies are using 2010 version and I last worked on 2007 version, I figured why not? The course is free, I will have upgraded my skills, will have a certificate at the end of the course and once again have something under my belt that more than likely benefit my personal life more than it will my professional life.

I also started making more jewelry. The photo below is a pic of the first set I created:

I really love what I came up with. Who knew? LOL!

Mind you, I had all of these beads, feathers and whatnot and decided to accessorize my wardrobe since I can't really spend any money. Well my neighbor came down one day to show me something she purchased, and I had most of the jewelry I created laid on the table. Next thing I knew, she purchased two pieces. Then another neighbor came by and same thing happened. Let's just say, all of the pieces you see here with the exception of two (one gift and two I kept) are all sold. I made some more, but I never got a chance to take the photos. Good news was that I got a chance to make a lil Xmas cash. I wish I had done this sooner, because it would have helped me get some money for the second jewelry course I wanted to take at FIT (that I never got a chance to take this summer). I have all of 2012 to take it, but I really wanted to get started in January.

I mentioned earlier that I planned on changing CLJ. I have still been reading up on Photoshop Elements 9. I'm still debating as to whether I will let CLJ stay on blogger, or move it to Wordpress. Different background, less images, what font to use. I'm still debating as to whether or not I want to go on YouTube. Jury still out on that one. Decisions, decisions...

We went downtown two weekends ago to go check out some supplies I needed for Xmas. At the end of the evening we stopped at Bryant Park to check out their Citi Pond event. I really had a great time watching all the ice skaters and taking photos of their Christmas tree:

Christmas is the one time of the year that I really love; but this year I have to say, there seems to be a commercial mean streak showing itself regarding Christmas. What is going on with people pepper spraying and shooting folks in WalMart, stabbing over Michael Jordan sneakers, beating people up in the parking lots across America? All for items that they are going to forget about by the time Martin Luther King Jr.'s Holiday gets here (another day they make into a shopping extravaganza!) In these uncertain economic times, we should be grateful for what we have, as well as being alive. I'm all for giving Christmas cheer, but really, does a child need to see this on television?

I hate this commercial. I mean where's the holiday spirit?

Now I know some people tell their kids there's no such thing as Santa, ok, I get that, it's your kid and times are tight. Personally, I would let my child experience the joy of the season; they wouldn't get everything they wanted, but I would at least let them have the joy of the season. Explain the real reason behind Christmas, and then let them enjoy the tale of Santa (I figure their going to come to their own conclusion by the time they are about 8 years old. By 10 I don't think they buy it anyway. The joy of making it a wonderful holiday for children has vanished. I don't care, I'm a lover of Christmas. I know the "reason for the season" is Jesus. But I also want Santa, Scrooge, the Three Wise Men, It's A Wonderful Life, Charlie Brown, Ralphie and that BB gun! I want to watch "King of Kings" or "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (no matter how bad the film is). I don't care! I don't want to get all philosophical on the Santa subject. People analyze everything to pieces. I have 358 days to be "in the know"; For one week, I wanna forget about conspiracy theories, "real truths", and "his-tory revealed". I want a Santa, I want Ebenezer! I want to go straight into the new year deliriously happy, even if I had a hellish year. Who puts on a commercial with a woman challenging Santa and kicking his likeness off of a roof? Or the one where the wife tells him "Daddy don't want no cologne"...

Who does this?!! Ridiculous. And so wrong.

Even this crazy anorexic Martha Stewart clone woman who was training for Black Friday at Target...

This broad freaked me out! I have to tell you, this season's commercials turned me off.

Now I could visualize this happening to Santa in the 21st Century. I found this one funny!

Well, I have to take off. Need to clean up a bit and try to finally get to see the tree at Rockerfeller Center. I've been trying to get there for the past 3 weeks. I will post next week, because it's the last week of 2011 and I have to get it poppin. So to all of you...

Giving Thanks...

Hey everyone!

I know I haven't posted in about what 3 weeks? Well, again, massive job interviews, and I signed back up to take some classes in January, so I've been a bit busy. I'm also practicing with Photoshop (like really, where have I been? I love this software!) because you know this blog needs a new look for 2012.

Anyhoo, can you believe that it's Thanksgiving? I mean really where is the time going? Even though it's been a bit tough financially, my sweetie and I were saying this morning that we are really blessed. YES we have had to deal with major financial stress this year, but here's our blessings:

No matter what, we still have a roof over our heads. Thank the heavens for New York City's rent control laws...

We've lost some family members, but we cherish their memory, and learn to love the ones who are still here more and more each day.

We haven't gone hungry. My waistline can vouch for this. Which leads to the next point...

We have our health. No diseases, no health concerns. We decided to add more veggies and fruits in the diet in 2012.

We are not giving up. This is a test, everyone goes through it in life. This too shall pass, it's just time to switch our thinking, get more creative, courageous and focused.

When I think about all of this, I know I've been bless, I am grateful for my life, and I cherish the good and the bad. It is meant to be, so I can BE.

Even if you are not with family and have a can of corned beef hash, open that bad boy up, get a candle and eat by candlelight. Enjoy your life! Make lemonade out of those lemons. Be THANKFUL that you have can can of hash; make that hash a full turkey dinner. It will get better, trust. So to everyone I say Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones!

On their own creations!

This is what I've been up to lately, which is why there hasn't been any posts for past two weeks. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

I still haven't been able to find a J-O-B, but you know what? That's ok. I just realized that I need to put my passions to work.

I have been enjoying every minute of it. Music playing, incense burning, wine, some wire and hand tools have my creative juices flowing like never before. I don't know if it's because I've had enough with the job market, actually miss having my days to myself (job hunting is work), wanting to pursue MY GOALS or just saying F it (I had a HELLISH week last week), but I put on some old school music and I went for broke.

I had planned on working on this late summer, but life took a hold and was giving me some issues for a bit. Now I can say to look for the jewelry debut Dec 1st. Of course I'm going to sneak in a post before then, I just purchased a new calendar (2011-2012) for time management (I'm still old school, digital schedules don't work for me, I like to write my lists). It's crucial to know my next steps.

With the passing of Heavy D this past week, I have been obsessing over his last tweet:

Life is too short not to take chances and enjoy doing what you love. Find inspiration in all that you do.

I know, I know. I was supposed to show you my latest creation. Well, it didn't turn out as well as I liked, so I decided to step back and think about what I did wrong and start again. Then I stopped in the middle of creating.

It gets like that sometimes. Full speed ahead followed by a case of ADD brought on by either Dancing With The Stars, a rerun of "Two and A Half Men" or a DVR full of "Modern Family". Can you tell that I loooove this show?

I'm so ashamed...

I have nothing to show you.

I meant to post this last night, but I had tons of laundry that needed my attention. Anyhoo, I think that my frustration in my career search is causing me to create more. This could be a good thing. It beats sitting around moping or watching mindless television (except for Wednesdays. I'm sorry "The Middle", "Modern Family", "New Girl" are HILARIOUS and I love Kathy Bates in "Harry's Law").

So in my persistence in tackling that bin of yarn I found, I started with project number 2. Stay tuned to see how this masterpiece will turn out.

When you clean out your closets?

So while I'm looking for one of my many handbags, I find two large bins of yarn. Now if any one knows anything about the size of NYC apartments, first question is, what was on my mind? I need as much space as I can find. Second question, where did I find all this great yarn? Had to have been a store closeout, or I had a major Michael's moment. I have an assortment of styles and colors. Ooooh!   I'm a kid in a candy store!

I was estatic! I found my crochet needles, and went to work! Everyone knows I hate the cold, so this was a no brainer. I found so many skeins of yarn, to add to the basket full of yarn placed near my couch, I could open up a store.   Hmm...

Whad'ya think?   Excuse my twists, they were a bit off course this day...lol.

I'm getting ready for the winter y'all!

I'm still on my job search, but I have to give a heartfelt shout out to Donna from Sweet Potato Pie Chronicles and SOUL PRETTY for sending me some links and info regarding job opportunities. I have to tell you, it warmed my heart and soul to see that people are trying to assist or give insight on where you can score a gig. You like me, you reaaally like me! (ha, ha).

Right now, I'm getting ready to meet with a recruiter and see what comes up. I also got wind of a job fair so I will stop by that to meet with employers. I just want a gig that will let me still pursue what I want, is that too much to ask? Most of these corporate jobs want 8am - 6pm! When did that happen? I'm not the CEO or even the Vice President. You messed up the money and now I have to give my time and life in return? What the hell?

*SIGH* One thing for sure, you have to stay positive. I keep affirmations all over the house and I also watch comedies and of course I love music, so anything to uplift the spirits I will get played in my house.

My sweetheart said to me yesterday, "OK, this is it, from this morning on, we don't talk about anything negative about the economy". I have to agree, it has been getting to the both of us. Time to refocus. So while on Facebook a friend of mine posted this photo. I cannot stop laughing, because when it's all said and done, the only thing you can do is just listen to the music and go with the flow...

Oh, by the way, I have to show you my new project; just as soon as I figure out how to download pics from my phone! :)

I am officially a "99er"

what EXACTLY has been going on in my world. I know it's been a long time. Some of you I keep in contact with and I have told you what has been going on. For the rest of my readers, let me give you the short version..

Point blank, I'm in a job hunting frenzy like never before. I'm not sure if I even mentioned it before on CLJ (and it's only because quite frankly, I'm not into depressing anyone), but I have been unemployed for two years and five months. Although I enjoyed my time off and I have been looking within these two years, I wanted to devote more time to CLJ and pursue other interests and had full intentions on doing so.

Unfortunately, you need income to rock whatever it is you really want to do. I have had more fights with Department Of Labor this year over my unemployment that would rival a sketch on The Office. I mean you wouldn't BELIEVE the hell I went through with them. Two months with income, then a month without. Then, all monies are reactivated, stopped again when Congress gets to fighting about the budget. It was bizarre and completely maddening!

Then, it all came to a sudden stop this summer; I mean the breaks came to a halt. I knew it was coming and let me tell you...it is hell out here folks. That's all I can say without getting all political, frantic or just plain exasperated by the whole situation. I am tired. I am officially what the government statistics call a "99er". I went through 99 weeks of unemployment. I am now on my own. I understand that it couldn't go on forever, but this is ridiculous.

I have a binder full of "Thank you for submitting your application, but..." letters, going way back to September 2009. I have changed my resume so many times to fit job positions I applied to it's ridiculous. You have to, it's the only way your resumes will even be read by HR/recruiter. I wasn't a brain surgeon, I wasn't a CEO, I was a freaking Executive Administrative Assistant. This past Friday I even received a email from Macy's saying that there were no jobs for my amount of experience. Mind you, I was applying for HOLIDAY work! As a cashier! I don't plan on living on the income they were paying, I just need to have an income so I can at least have some money to pay for books when I return to school in January (hopefully). I have dealt with corporate expenses, Per Diem cash, talked to clients over the phone and dealt with brokers. Yet I'm not qualified for Macy's. ARE YOU SERIOUS?!

Don't even mention temporary/executive recruiters to me. You used to be able to go to an agency, take a test, go to the employer, temp for a month, two, three then get hired. NOW they send you to the employer, you're interviewing with other external candidates...and I need the agencies to do what for me? Why am I using you? You're the middleman, and you are sending me out to INTERVIEW for a TEMPORARY POSITION and I'm with an external candidate. Hm mm, and you still get a cut? No, no, this is completely unnecessary.

I've been to job fairs. Don't even get me started on telling you what I think about them...

I really had to take a break this summer, but I missed all of you tremendously. I felt so guilty about not posting, but I was in such a exasperated, exhausting funk, I couldn't post anything. Plus I really wanted to enjoy the summer; It turned out that Mid-July to Mid-August was the best part of Summer of 2011 for me, the rest sucked.

Of course one can say, start your own business. Honey child's let me tell you. Still need some capital to start one up. Not only do I have to get my 9-5 hustle back on, my side hustle has taken a hit because supplies cost money (more about that later). Rent still has to be paid, and your savings account is dwindling, need a magnifying glass to double check your ATM receipts, cause you can't believe how little is left in your account and you're checking to see if your vision is correct.

I have met so many people who were: accountants, secretaries, traders, retail workers, construction, airline attendants, maintenance workers, photographers, models, these are people who had jobs, some money in the bank, a car, a home (let's not forget-thousands are in foreclosure); I mean, we've seen it on the news. It's NOT RIGHT! I have family members with degrees up the "a", loans in the thousands and they can't find job! I've had a job since I was 17 years of age. Never had a problem finding one. All of a sudden, I'm now a castoff? Says who?

Breathe, girl, breathe...There, I got that off my chest. Trust, this is the last I speak of this situation. Dealing with this on a daily basis is enough. It's taken my focus off of what I really want to do, and THAT'S a problem. Time to regroup.
So...it's come down to this...while I'm in a serious job hunt (so is my honey, so the two of us are out of work - great, just great.) I will be posting on CLJ a minimum of two times a week. I can't leave you guys hanging. I was going to change up the site, but I decided to let that wait until the first of the year, so much is going on right now (also lost a dear family member this summer, and another family member just suffered a stroke). I will persevere my friends, I will make it through.

Funky Flashback Friday - July 15, 2011

It's 5:52am and I've been up since 4:30am. I went to bed and slept for only an hour. Got a lot on my mind...

I am in need of a SERIOUS time out, I mean a true pack my bags and get the hell out of dodge moment. I will be taking a much needed break soon, but I would love to take a chilling by the beach while someone refreshes my wine glass while a strong masculine chiseled 6ft body with strong arms and a tight tush walks by me vacation. Can't do that this year, but hey, a girl can dream. My other getaway is my annual get together with some friends who are the best when it comes to having fun, so I'm just happy that I will see them soon. With all that anticipation, this song by Bobby Brown is just what I need to here. Don't front, y'all know full well you was kickin' it with Bobby back in the day!

Since I'm in the mood for BB, I have to play this joint as well. I was happy to see it on YouTube as I actually had a copy of this performance that I wore out on VHS tape. This is when award shows were worth watching...

Watching this made me 22 again! LOL!

This one is my favorite BB song, which is off of his 3rd(?) CD entitled "Bobby". It didn't get much play but I tell you when it camed to BB or NE (New Edition) even though I was a bit older, I played the hell out of their CD's. Bobby is sexy as he wanna be in this vid:

Funky Flashback Friday - July 8, 2010

I haven't posted a Funky Flashback Friday in a while, and as of next week, I think I'm going to change the format a bit, but I had to post today because of a group I saw on television this week.

I'm not sure if any of my readers watch TVOne's "UNSUNG"; but UNSUNG is a music series a la "Behind The Music" that features black artists that had some great hits back in the day, but somehow their stars faded into obscurity. You know, later in years you ask "whatever happened to so and so?". Well, this show will let you know what happened to them.

So far they have had an impressive list of artists: Donny Hathaway, Phyllis Hyman, The Fat Boys, Teena Marie (before she had passed last December). Recently they have had Alexander O' Neal & Cherelle, Big Daddy Kane and Monday's episode will feature Evelyn "Champagne" King. There have been so many profiled that they do two seasons a year and are on it's eighth season. Yesterday they announce 3 extra episodes extending into August and on August 1st are profiling The Sylvers! I cannot WAIT for that one, because next to the Jackson 5, The Sylvers were it for me. They were a talented family that I feel got stuck to singing bubblegum music and then disco hits and just fell off. It seems they were the number one group everyone seemed to want to ask "what happened to them?" Well, we're about to find out!

Last week UNSUNG profiled the Ohio Players. My mother loved this group. So I had to search for a video of one of their hits and I came across "Love Rollercoaster". The following clip is from the Midnight Special TV series (ok, please tell me someone remembers this show! This was my show!) Honey, these outfits SCREAM the 1970's!
