It is very hard to see the frames we are stuck in: a visit to the 1955 World Book Encyclopedia

In my Substack, I've been writing a series called "How to Think" on critical thinking. It isn't specifically about hostility towards Israel or Jews,, but if people would use these methods, it would reduce both of those. I believe that this goes beyond what every other critical thinking book says.

Most of the chapters are partially behind a paywall, but I'm making this short chapter available to all. The analogy between the racism described here and antisemitism should be obvious - many of the previous forms of antisemitism seemed to be logical and even progressive at the time, and only later can they be seen for what they were. And so it is with today's "anti-Zionism."

We have been discussing frames and assumptions that are invisible from inside them. The 1955 World Book Encyclopedia provides one of the clearest demonstrations available.

The encyclopedia was used in tens of thousands of homes and classrooms. It was well researched and provided the best information available at the time. The editors clearly took the responsibility seriously.

Which brings us to its entry on "Negro."

The seven-page entry tries to be as liberal and politically correct as possible for its time. Reading it today reveals something the author and editors could not see: an entry meant to make Black people proud and promote their civil rights had deeply embedded racism that was literally invisible to everyone who produced it.

One should expect anachronisms in a 70 year old reference book, and certainly this entry has its share, not the least of which is the title of the article itself. It then opens with a section on what a Negro is, and subscribes to the theory of three major races on Earth: Caucasoid, Mongoloid, and Negroid. This was the scientific consensus in 1955 and remained that way until the 1970s with research on protein-based genetic markers. The Human Genome Project, completed around 2000, confirmed and extended the finding that skin color is a relatively small differentiator between people among thousands of genetic markers.

That is not one of the problems with the entry.

For example, the article notes that there is one Negro physician for every 3,680 Negroes, a ratio far below what health authorities recommend. The statistic is accurate and the concern is genuine. But the implication running beneath it is that Black people go to Black doctors and white people go to white doctors — that the relevant measure of Black medical achievement is how many Black doctors exist to serve the Black population, compared to white doctors serving the white population. The idea that people could go to a doctor with a different skin color is not considered.

Another problematic part is the photograph of a happy looking Pullman Porter with a caption: "Pullman Porters are known in all parts of the United States for their smiling courtesy and efficient service on trains." But the Pullman Porters’ job was to serve the mostly white passengers on luxury trains. Former slaves were originally chosen for those jobs in the 1800s because George Pullman thought that they would be more pliable to working long hours.

The text tries to be as respectful as possible but it comes across today as condescending.

Yet that is not the biggest problem, What is missing is by far the most telling.

Black colleges were trying to graduate more Black doctors. Meharry Medical College, Howard University's College of Medicine, and the National Medical Association had been producing and organizing Black physicians for decades.

They are not mentioned in the section of Black doctors.

A. Philip Randolph organized those smiling, courteous, efficient Pullman Porters into the most powerful Black labor union in American history, fought the Pullman Company for twelve years, won recognition in 1937, and built the economic and organizational infrastructure that would fund the civil rights movement.

This is not mentioned in the section on Pullman Porters.

The entry mentions Jackie Robinson in quite positive terms — "star second-baseman with the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1940's and early 1950's, was the first Negro to play major-league baseball." This is a real celebration of his achievements.

But the article does not say a word about the Negro Leagues, a parallel baseball league that was on par with the American and National Leagues in talent.

The Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, known as Black Wall Street, had been one of the wealthiest Black communities in America before its destruction in the 1921 massacre. Neither its existence as a thriving community nor its destruction are mentioned.

Astoundingly, although the encyclopedia has a good entry on jazz, that word is not mentioned in the Negro article. Jazz performers are lumped in as “entertainers” and their most distinctive art form, promoted by the United States worldwide, is nowhere to be seen.

The quality of Black newspapers were similar to that of white-owned city newspapers. The Chicago Defender, the Pittsburgh Courier, the Crisis — publications that had been shaping Black political thought and cultural life for decades, with national circulation and genuine influence — do not appear. Black journalism as an institution is invisible.

Every Black achievement the entry celebrates is based on how well Black Americans are doing in white America. Anything Black people did for themselves — the institutions they built as Black institutions not depending on the grace of white people — is not considered worthy of mention. An opportunity to educate a generation of white people about these accomplishments was not even considered. A Black entertainer or sports figure or businessman who rose to prominence among the Black community is invisible to the white majority

The entry that was meant to celebrate Black achievement reads, from outside the frame, as a document that can only see Black Americans in relation to white America — that has no category for what Black America built on its own terms.

The most surprising part? The entry was written by Ambrose Caliver.

Caliver was the most distinguished Black educator in the country. He had spent thirty years in the United States Office of Education, becoming the first African American to receive a permanent professional appointment to federal service. He conducted the major national surveys of Negro education. He served on the U.S. Displaced Persons Commission and the United Nations Special Committee on Non-Self-Governing Territories. And he created "Freedom's People," an eight-part radio series broadcast on NBC in 1941 specifically to showcase Black contributions to science, industry, sports, music, arts, and the nation — the first substantial program in mass media devoted exclusively to African-American life and history.

Caliver knew about jazz. He knew about Black sports and Black music and Black institutional life. He had devoted his career to documenting and celebrating exactly what the encyclopedia entry cannot see. And then he wrote an entry organized entirely around the white metric.

We cannot know whether Caliver wanted to write a more comprehensive entry and was edited down, or whether he knew what the audience wanted and wrote it for them. What is clear from reading it today is that the parts meant as cheerleading now read as condescension.

The omissions were not from ignorance. They came from a framework so thoroughly embedded in how educated Americans — including the most distinguished Black educator in the country — thought about Black achievement in 1955 that it was invisible as a framework. It felt like the obvious way to organize an encyclopedia entry on Negro life. The question "how are Black Americans doing in white America?" felt like the natural question because, in 1955, white people did not even have the concept of a separate Black America where the members were just as literate, just as talented and just as important as their white counterparts.

That was the framework of the World Book.

Every era has frames that are this complete. The ones operating now are just as invisible to us as the 1955 frame was to Caliver. They determine what we notice, what we measure, what we count as achievement, what kind of thing we think of as worth documenting, what we don't think of at all. We cannot list them — that is the definition of an invisible frame. If you could see it clearly, it would not be invisible.

But invisible does not mean inaccessible. The tools from the preceding chapter — applied to the entry itself rather than to a policy argument — would have surfaced the problem even in 1955. The questions are not complicated.

Who is the assumed audience, and what would a different audience notice is missing? The entry is written for a white reader who needs Black achievements explained. A Black reader in 1955 would already know about the Negro Leagues, the Chicago Defender, A. Philip Randolph's victory over the Pullman Company. The choice of what to include reveals the assumed reader. Ask who the entry is for, and a different reader immediately appears — one for whom the omissions are not omissions at all but the most obvious starting points.

For every achievement described, ask where it came from. Jackie Robinson arrived at major league baseball with the skill to compete immediately at the highest level. The Negro Leagues role is ignored. Duke Ellington and Lena Horne are mentioned but not the Cotton Club where they honed their talents. Harry Belafonte and Eartha Kitt came up through the American Negro Theatre. The entry described Marian Anderson as one of "the first Negroes to appear with the Metropolitan Opera Company, [who] made their opera debuts in 1955." But she was 57 at that point: what were her struggles to get there? A natural question that should have been asked is, “what were all these talented people doing before they made a splash in white America?”

When the entry describes a disparity as a deficit, ask how that disparity happened to begin with? While “separate but equal” was in force, what parallel institutions were built that aspired to excellence? The deficit frame sees the gap. The question "what did people do about it?" sees the institutions. The entry's frame can ask the first question. It cannot form the second.

When the entry describes integration as an achievement, ask what existed before integration and what integration replaced. The entry's implicit frame treats integration as the endpoint — the measure of Black progress is how far Black Americans have been admitted into white institutions. Ask what the separate institutions looked like on their own terms.

Look if the tone of the entry subtly looks down on Blacks or acts surprised at their accomplishments. Do a red-team test: less than 20% of NBA players are white, would any encyclopedia treat their entry into the league today as noteworthy, let alone celebrated?

None of these questions require special knowledge or analytical sophistication. They require only the habit of asking what the account is organized around, who it is organized for, and what a different question would produce. The questions would be the same as for any communication: who is the target audience? Could anything possibly be construed negatively? That habit, applied in 1955, would have caught what the most distinguished Black educator in the country could not catch from inside the frame.

Which is the point. The tools in this series do not guarantee you will see outside the frames you inhabit. They improve the odds. They prompt questions the frame would not prompt. They do not make invisible assumptions visible automatically — but they make it more likely that someone, somewhere, will ask the question the frame cannot form. That is as much as any analytical tool can do.

During Passover, the Free Press published a beautiful piece by Olivia Reingold titled “I Am an October 8 Jew.” In it, she describes how, after October 7, she began to reclaim the Jewish heritage she had all but abandoned as a child. Eventually, Reingold would find herself moved to tears during a recent Shabbat service, “a day that used to mean nothing to me, except more time to scroll online or work.”

I can’t say that I’m an October 8 Jew, as I was devoted to the cause well before then. But something about my Judaism has also changed since October 7.

I’ve long been a passionate Zionist, and I’ve felt that I owe everything to God. While I am a devoted believer, however, I’m a very negligent observer. Having come fully to embrace my Judaism only in adulthood, I’ve done slightly more than the bare minimum to maintain a personal sense of Jewish tradition.

Beginning a few decades ago, I went about kosher eating in my own way (and I’ve got my biblical justifications for it). I wrap tefillin in phases, the way others might go to the gym, slack off, and then resume. I pore over the Hebrew Bible regularly but in no regimented fashion. I tread lightly and humbly into the Talmud.

All of which is to say, I have cobbled together my own version of observance and continue to fine-tune it. Many Jews do the same.

Judaism, as I came to it, was about my relationship with my God, my place in history, and my inheritance. A lot of “my” was involved in this, but somehow “my people” barely came up.

October 7 changed me in this important respect. Before that day, I had never felt much of an ongoing obligation to my fellow Jews around the world. Of course, whenever I heard news of threatened or assaulted Jews, the bonds of history and faith would take hold. But they would once again recede. I didn’t think a great deal about how my actions or words affected the Jews of Australia, Asia, Europe, and elsewhere.

It hadn’t occurred to me that we were all, as Jews, in the same position. Because, at the time, we really weren’t. I was born well into the age of Jewish emancipation, and up until October 7, 2023, the overwhelming majority of the world’s Jews were counted foremost as individual citizens of their countries of residence. Their circumstances varied.

‘Fauda’ producers issue content warning regarding Oct. 7-based episodes

he producers of the action TV series “Fauda” warned viewers on Sunday that they may want to skip the upcoming episodes based on events during the Hamas-led massacre in Israel’s northwestern Negev on Oct. 7, 2023.

“Episodes 7 and 8 [of Season 5], which will air tomorrow [now today] ... include content, sights, and sounds that may be difficult to watch. It’s important for us to say: These episodes return to that terrible day and stand on their own. If watching is too difficult, it’s OK to give up and connect with the season’s plot, which will continue in the episode that will air next week,” Israeli satellite television network Yes said in a statement on social media. The renowned show, which debuted in Israel in 2015, has aired in 190 countries.

The newest season of the series was filmed primarily in Israel and Budapest, Hungary, after plans to shoot its European segments in Marseilles, France, were changed due to security concerns.

It was rewritten to address the aftermath of the Oct. 7 attacks. The 11-episode Season 5 runs weekly on Yes in Israel and is distributed internationally on Netflix as well.

Israeli actor Idan Amedi, who played undercover agent Sagi Tzur in earlier seasons of the series, does not appear in the latest season due to the serious injury he sustained while fighting against Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip.

Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood compares boycott-led show cancellations to “taking books off shelves”

Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood has likened his gigs with an Israeli artist being cancelled due to boycotts to “taking books off shelves”.

In May 2024 and again in March 2025, Greenwood played in Tel Aviv with Israeli musician Dudu Tassa, incurring criticism from the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. A pair of UK performances by the duo, scheduled for June 2025 in Bristol and London, were later cancelled following pressure from pro-Palestinian campaigners.

The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) said those cancellations followed “peaceful BDS pressure”, citing what it called the artists’ “clear and irrefutable links to whitewashing Israel’s genocide in Gaza that has killed at least 62,000 Palestinians”. Its post also said: “Dudu Tassa has repeatedly entertained genocidal Israeli forces in between these massacres of Palestinians in Gaza, willingly acting as a cultural ambassador for apartheid Israel.”

Greenwood has now given an interview to El País, in which he was asked to compare his stance on playing in Israel to the cultural boycott of apartheid South Africa in the 1980s.

“I’m a fan of lots of Israeli films and writers and musicians, and the music I make with Dudu is resurrecting songs that are older than most of the countries that are currently fighting each other,” Greenwood responded.

“That’s always going to be more important to me,” he added. “There are bookshops in Madrid that are openly selling Amos Oz’s novels and he’s Israeli. To me, cancelling music is the same as taking books off shelves.”

Greenwood responded in a statement at the time of the cancellations, saying: “The venues and their blameless staff have received enough credible threats to conclude that it’s not safe to proceed.”

“Forcing musicians not to perform and denying people who want to hear them an opportunity to do so is self-evidently a method of censorship and silencing,” he continued. “Intimidating venues into pulling our shows won’t help achieve the peace and justice everyone in the Middle East deserves. This cancellation will be hailed as a victory by the campaigners behind it, but we see nothing to celebrate and don’t find that anything positive has been achieved.”

Across the region, from Iran to Lebanon to Gaza, our enemies are seeking to rebuild, rearm and evolve in order to continue threatening our citizens and terrorizing our people. However, recent developments are generating serious, legitimate concerns in Israel—concerns that must be addressed—because we in Israel are in the line of fire. We must also address concerns regarding the financial components of the deal with Iran in order to prevent funds, which Iran will supposedly receive, from being funneled toward its war machine and its proxies.

As for Lebanon, let me be clear: The conflict in Lebanon should be resolved through negotiations between Israel and Lebanon—and not by Iranian extortion. Tying Iran to Lebanon not only leaves Israel exposed to constant threat; it leaves the Lebanese weak and powerless, and will prevent their president and government from moving forward.

Tomorrow, negotiations between Israel and Lebanon will resume in Washington, D.C., under the auspices of the Americans. The disarmament of Hezbollah must be inherent to any solution in Lebanon, and Iran cannot dictate the future of Lebanon—on these fundamental points there is full agreement between Israel and Lebanon.

President Donald Trump is a trusted partner of Israel. Our closest friend and ally and leader of the free world—the leader of the United States of America—has been staunchly combating the empire of evil and promoting stability in the Middle East. We value the president’s ongoing friendship and his administration’s clear stance regarding Iran’s nuclear plans and intentions. We share values and interests, and I have every confidence that together we can find the best formula to tackle this challenge.

I totally reject any derogatory statements aimed at senior officials in the administration.

Netanyahu adviser Caroline Glick says ‘truth will win out’ in battle against anti-Israel disinformation

Despite the rapid spread of misinformation against the Jews and Israel, Caroline Glick, international affairs adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said that she is hopeful that the truth will eventually win out.

Speaking at the Second Annual JNS International Policy Summit in Jerusalem, Glick focused on what she called the “eighth front” in Israel’s war: the battle over information and the spread of anti-Jewish incitement.

“In the same time that information is spreading, disinformation is also being spread deliberately and with malice of forethought,” she said.

False narratives spread quickly, Glick said, because rather than encouraging people to think about how to solve problems, it causes people “to think about who to blame for your problems,” which is a “much easier sell” and aligns with people’s existing prejudices.

As an example, she cited an interview with Jeremy Boreing, co-founder and former CEO of The Daily Wire, in which he said that whenever he posts pro-Israel content on social media, he is inundated with accounts accusing him of being Jewish, which he is not, and targeting him with antisemitic attacks.

Glick said many of those accounts appear to be automated bots activated in response to pro-Israel messaging and designed to divert attention from the original content.

She argued that some online influencers have discovered that antisemitic content generates significantly more engagement than their usual material.

Such influencers, especially among the “woke Right,” have found that “disseminating antisemitic messaging and giving approval to others to feel comfortable in their own antisemitism or to adopt antisemitism as a calling card, even if they hadn’t really thought too much about Jews in the past” is a way to get more subscribers, Glick said.

Glick also accused major media outlets and universities—the “general institutions” that people rely on for truth-telling—of contributing to what she called a broader “complex of un-truth.”

She pointed to how the New York Times won a Pulitzer Prize for using a front-page image of a child with cystic fibrosis as a “blood libel” to say Israel is deliberately starving civilians in Gaza. The Times edited the child’s brother out of the photo, who appeared “healthy” and “well-fed,” according to Glick.

Judge orders pro-Palestine 'legal' body to pay UK-Israeli IDF soldier it attempted to prosecute

The International Center of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) has been ordered to pay costs after failing to bring a private prosecution against a dual British-Israeli citizen (called Soldier A) who served in a reserve IDF unit after October 7, 2023. ICJP’s antics were also called “egregious” and “inexcusable” by the presiding judge.

ICJP describes itself as “an independent organisation of lawyers, politicians, and academics” concerned with the situation in Gaza. The attempted summons against Soldier A was the ICJP’s first private prosecution attempt.

ICJP made the application for the summons of Soldier A on November 6, 2025, with the aim that he be charged under Section 4 of the Foreign Enlistment Act 1870. However, UK Lawyers for Israel intervened and pointed out that the offense could only be committed by “a British subject” and that, by virtue of Section 35 of the British Nationality Act 1981, a British and/or Israeli citizen is not a British subject. UKLFI also pointed out that successive UK Governments have also explicitly stated that the FEA does not apply to British dual nationals serving in the IDF.

Judge Paul Goldspring of Westminster Magistrates’ Court ultimately ruled on April 8, 2026 that ICJP’s application was “fundamentally misconceived in law,” as the FEA does not apply to dual nationals.

“For a dual national, service in the armed forces of his other state of nationality is not ‘foreign enlistment’ in any meaningful sense,” Goldspring wrote in his decision.

Goldspring also said that Soldier A did not actually “enlist” on October 8, 2023, but merely reported for reserve duty pursuant to his existing liability under Israeli law.

He also dismissed the ICJP’s argument that Israel was at war with a state friendly to the UK (the FEA requires that a foreign state be at war with a friendly state).

Goldspring then went on to say that, even if the ICJP’s legal case were sound, “which it is not,” the application would still fail due to lack of admissible evidence.

What I saw in Israel changed the way I read the news

When I traveled to Israel earlier this month as part of a student journalism trip, I went expecting to learn about the Oct. 7, 2023 terrorist attack, the war with Iran, and the broader conflicts involving Gaza, Lebanon, Hamas, and Hezbollah.

I had followed the headlines from the United States. I had seen the social media clips, campus slogans, and commentary from both sides.

Being there with The College Fix and Passages made the limits of that coverage obvious.

In the West, Israel is often treated less like a country and more like a symbol. For many on the left, it is the permanent villain, blamed for nearly every crisis in the region. To parts of the right, the conflict is reduced to an unwanted foreign entanglement, as if Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah are not part of a larger ideological and strategic threat.

Both views egregiously misrepresent the people who live with the consequences.

I stood at holy sites where Jesus performed miracles and gave his life. I also stood in villages and saw the devastation wreaked by Hamas terrorists three years ago on Oct. 7: bullet holes, blackened walls, posters with the faces of people who were murdered.

But the trip’s most important lessons came from the people I met directly: Israelis still grieving their dead, Palestinians explaining the complexity of life in the region, former IDF members describing the realities of war, and survivors whose stories made it impossible to dismiss the conflict as just another overseas war measured by its effect on gas prices.

The conflict is not a clean morality play. It is a long and painful history shaped by religion, conquest, exile, terrorism, failed leadership, regional power struggles, and the basic desire of ordinary people to live day-to-day without rockets overhead.

One of the most important conversations I had was with Shadi Khalloul Risho, an Aramean Maronite Christian and former IDF officer. His argument is not that Israel is above criticism. It’s that much of the criticism begins from a false history.

“The Jewish people didn’t come here on behalf of a mother country like Britain or France to exploit resources,” he told me. “One cannot colonize a land where his ancestors’ language is written on the ancient stones, where your kings ruled, and where your prophets walked.”

Collins accuses Platner of antisemitism, defends support for Israel

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) accused Maine Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner of antisemitism and defended her support for Israel in a Fox News interview on Monday.

“I remain a very strong supporter of Israel, the one democracy in the Middle East, our true ally in the Middle East,” Collins said when asked about increasing hostility to Israel and AIPAC among the American public. She attributed such trends to “rising antisemitism in our country that Graham Platner certainly is part of, and has been since his high school days. That’s been a consistent theme throughout his entire life.”

Collins pointed to Platner’s accusations of genocide against Israel and his comments praising Hamas’ tactics in a raid that killed multiple Israeli soldiers, as first reported by Jewish Insider in April, calling his activity “appalling.”

“AIPAC is made up of Americans who care deeply about our relationship with Israel,” Collins continued. “Platner makes it sound like this is some sort of evil foreign influence, and that is absolutely wrong.”

Angry Coffee Shop Owner Who Smeared Jewish Rep Dan Goldman as a ‘Fascist’ Sipping ‘Genocide Juice’ Is a Graham Platner Donor Cited for ‘Filth and Flies’

A New York City coffee shop told a Jewish member of Congress—who brought his young daughter by the store— to stay away, saying his "AIPAC" money was no good there, and smeared him as a fascist who sips "genocide juice."

On Monday, Poetica Coffee, an East Village roastery, posted a surveillance image on Instagram of Rep. Dan Goldman (D., N.Y.) at its cash register and launched into an invective-laden screed against the congressman, who's locked in a tight primary race that's focused heavily on his support for Israel.

"Hey @repdangoldman, we see that you stopped by our shop today for a coffee. Do you see how it doesn't taste like genocide juice? Or are you still having a hard time telling the difference? See, here at Poetica, we don't serve racists, fascists, homophobes, genocide enablers, or anyone in between," the account said.

"Too bad we didn't recognize you right away, or we would have turned you away. We issued you a refund—we don't need your money (it's probably coming from AIPAC anyways). Enjoy your loss on Tuesday. Don't ever come to Poetica."

In a response, Goldman on Instagram said he had stopped by so his daughter could use the restroom and had purchased a coffee out of politeness.

"I'm sorry to see this post. The barista could not have been nicer to my 7-yr-old daughter and me," Goldman said. "I made sure to buy a coffee in return for her kindness. I hope you at least make sure she gets the tip that she deserved."

The coffee shop is owned by Parviz Mukhamadkulov, an immigrant from Uzbekistan who is a donor to far-left Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner and who, closer to home, has publicly complained that his Brooklyn neighbors were not tipping enough.

The post instantly made waves on social media, and within hours of it going online, Poetica Coffee had taken down its entire Instagram account.

On its website, Poetica incongruously touts its "radical hospitality" and proudly notes that guests are "sacred" and "the door is open to everyone."

Ro Khanna signs pledge from antisemitic group TrackAIPAC to win endorsement

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) announced last week that he had been endorsed by the anti-Israel group TrackAIPAC, which has faced widespread accusations of antisemitism, after he became the first politician or candidate to sign a new “pledge” promulgated by the group.

TrackAIPAC has garnered ongoing accusations of antisemitism for its targeting of individual Jewish donors with, in some cases, distant or long-ago ties to pro-Israel organizations, fueling accusations that the group aims to broadly stigmatize Jewish political participation. Its inconsistent methodology and practices for determining which politicians it labels as “pro-Israel” have also generated criticism.

The group faced further scrutiny for endorsing antisemitic Texas Democratic candidate Maureen Galindo, though it belatedly revoked its endorsement after her antisemitic stances gained widespread national attention.

The “PEACE Pledge” requires signatories to reject any support from AIPAC, Democratic Majority for Israel, Republican Jewish Coalition, Christians United for Israel “or similar organizations and large donor networks promoting unconditional support for Israel” and to “reject spending and funds routed by groups like AIPAC and their allies through intermediary organizations or coordinated donor activity.”

The false projection of this term and inversion of the allegation is no accident. It is calculated in order to inflict yet further harm on the Jewish People. Further to that, the Mayor’s invocation of this false claim renders the term “genocide” meaningless and dramatically degrades the credibility of the international legal framework and undermines the values it was designed to uphold.

Then there are the Mayor’s threats against the political leadership of a key ally of the US. Mamdani’s vow to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu in New York is certainly dangerous rhetoric, but it is also legally illiterate. Quite apart from this baseless threat being contrary to US federal law, it threatens foundational pillars of customary international law designed to uphold state sovereignty and facilitate international relations.

The Mayor’s own abuse of international law builds upon the abuses already on display at the International Criminal Court (the ICC) itself.

In pursuing its anti-Israel agenda and issuing arrest warrants against Israel’s Prime Minister and its former Defense Minister, the Court has acted contrary to its own jurisdiction, its own rules, and on the basis of demonstrably false allegations.

The canard of deliberate starvation is easily refuted by the publicly available information on the COGAT website, which documented throughout the war in Gaza the volume of aid which was facilitated into the Gaza Strip by the Israeli army. The pursuit of charges by the ICC despite the clear evidence to the contrary is demonstrative of the political agenda now pursued by the Court. The United States has been the sole nation to hold the ICC to account, despite not even being a member of the institution.

Mamdani’s position is hardly surprising, given his hardcore anti-Israel activism and hostility to the New York Jewish community. But his false invocation of international law should be challenged. His attempts to mask his hostility to Israel and the Jews by falsely deploying international legal concepts and phraseology should be called out.

Ultimately, the Mayor is simply peddling modern blood libels against the Jewish state through misuse of these legal terms that inverts their meaning. The impact on Jews is obvious. The impact on international law may be less obvious, but is no less dangerous.

What starts with the Jews rarely ends with the Jews. Anyone who prizes the freedoms of the United States—life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness—and enjoys the privileges of life in the Free World, should recognize the urgent need to challenge the weaponization of international law. Time is not on our side.

Mamdani amplifies attacks on AIPAC that drew outcry from Jewish groups

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani doubled down on his rhetorical assault on AIPAC on Monday, after Jewish groups over the weekend criticized his comments about the pro-Israel organization at a Thursday rally last week that they argued evoked classic antisemitic tropes.

Mamdani defended naming AIPAC among the “monsters who move dark money,” maintaining that he was quoting 20th century Marxist philosopher Antonio Gramsci’s comment about living in a “time of monsters.” But the phrase is a notorious and widely known misquote of Gramsci’s, though the mayor evinced no awareness of the inaccuracy — and backed up his argument with statistics from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry alleging the death of more than 1,000 Palestinians at the hands of the IDF since the ceasefire last fall.

“When I am speaking about AIPAC, I am speaking about an organization that has been supportive of the status quo, that has fought any attempt to actually deliver to not just people in Palestine but frankly through much of the region,” he asserted on Monday following an unrelated event at City Hall. “Oftentimes they also support the status quo through dark money, by filtering money that would’ve previously been directed from AIPAC, now through other shell organizations whose identities of their contributors are only made clear after the election.”

Candidates Mamdani has endorsed for Congress have received the backing of multiple large PACs, including Justice Democrats, that received money through organizations that mask the identities of their contributors through the exact mechanisms he lamented on Monday.

Progressive Long Island congressional candidate caught liking anti-Jewish posts: ‘horrible antisemitic and ugly’

A Long Island Congressional candidate’s social media “likes” are full of hate.

Suffolk County political hopeful Lukas Ventouras keeps giving the digital thumbs up to posts by Slums of the Hamptons, a year-old Instagram account studded with content which mocks Jews’ fears of rising antisemitism, lampoons Jewish celebrities and the Israeli Defense Forces.

The 25-year-old NYU grad — who faces off against 36-year-old Chris Gallant in the June 23 Democratic primary — is vying to represent tens of thousands of Jewish people in the First District, which stretches from parts of northern Suffolk County to include all of Long Island’s tony East End.

In May, Ventouras commented with a laughing emoji on a vile Slums of the Hamptons post that implied Jerry Seinfeld flosses with human organs from Palestinians, according to a review of his social media, a move which felt “like a gut punch,” locals said.

“It felt like he really identified with his horribly antisemitic post,” one Hamptonite lamented to The Post. “It tells me that he endorses this antisemitic blood libel.”

The law school student — who in a debate last month demonized Israel for “land stolen from Palestinians”— has also “liked” crass posts about Jews and trafficked in harmful antisemitic tropes from his official candidate account.

Tucker Carlson’s new all-star guest, JD Hall, suggested that Jews hate Christians and have been persecuting them in Israel.

Who is Andy Burnham? Potential future UK PM's stance on Israel, antisemitism

Burnham was the mayor of Manchester at the time of the October 7 Hamas attacks. On October 13, 2023, about a week later, he released a statement condemning “without reservation the appalling attacks in Israel by Hamas.”

“Nothing justifies the taking of innocent lives in such a barbaric and indiscriminate manner,” he said.

He also acknowledged the heightened concerns of many members of Manchester’s Jewish community and said he had spoken to the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, who assured him that there would continue to be an increased police presence in all areas of the city-region with Jewish organizations.

Burnham also said that, while people must always be free to demonstrate peacefully and display flags if that is their wish, it is not acceptable to display “flags being used to provoke confrontation, displaying the flags of proscribed organisations, or the making of inciteful, hateful, and inflammatory statements.”

He then added that “Israel has the right to defend itself and protect its citizens in line with international law.”

However, just under two weeks later, on October 27, Burnham, along with the deputy mayor and local councillors, released a statement calling for a ceasefire at a time when hostages were still being held by Hamas.

“We condemn unreservedly the appalling terror attacks on innocent civilians in Israel by Hamas on October 7,” the statement read.

However, it added: “We also have profound concerns about the loss of thousands of innocent lives in Gaza, the displacement of many more, and widespread suffering through the ongoing blockade of essential goods and services.”

“Given the humanitarian disaster unfolding in Gaza, the mayor, deputy mayor and the ten leaders of Greater Manchester join the growing international calls for a ceasefire by all sides, and for the hostages to be released unharmed.”

This was criticized by Adlestone, who said that, “although much of the content was well-constructed and demonstrated an awareness of the situation’s complexity, I agreed with the majority in our community that the request gave insufficient weight to Israel’s right and obligation to defend her citizens.”

At the start of this month, Burnham notably declined to describe Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide, causing significant upset within the pro-Palestine space.

Burnham was reportedly asked about foreign policy during an interview with The Guardian and allegedly declined to say Israel has committed genocide, explaining: “I can’t judge things of that enormity from where I am as mayor of Greater Manchester.”

Pro-Palestinian activists and left-wing media sites have since been circulating a video clip from the 2015 Labour Leadership Election where Burnham said: “The first country I will visit if elected is Israel” and called the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement “spiteful.”

Keir Starmer resigns, hailing his achievement in curing Labour of antisemitism

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation less than two years after coming to power, triggering a Labour leadership contest with Andy Burnham seen as his likely successor.

In a statement outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer revealed his party had questioned whether he was best placed to lead Labour into the next general election. He said, “I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace.”

Jewish Labour peer Lord Mike Katz paid tribute, telling Jewish News: “Keir Starmer was true to his word: he promised to rip the poison of antisemitism out of the Labour Party, and he did just that.”

Starmer spent the weekend considering his future with his wife, Lady Victoria Starmer, as support at Westminster dwindled.

Addressing supporters outside No.10 with his wife Victoria, Starmer explained: “The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead the party into the next general election. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party.”

Starmer said he had informed King Charles of his decision and asked Labour’s governing body to set a timetable for his replacement, beginning July 9 and concluding before Parliament returns in September.

During his speech, Starmer — his voice cracking with emotion as he praised his wife as his “rock” — reflected on leading Labour after Jeremy Corbyn and his efforts to root out antisemitism.

“Six years ago, I inherited a Labour Party that was politically, financially, and thoroughly bankrupt,” he said.

“I was told time and again that my party was finished, consigned to history—that a majority, let alone a landslide, was impossible. But we proved them wrong by changing our party: ripping out the poison of antisemitism, restoring trust in the economy, defence, and national security, and standing proudly with our national flag.”

A Parliamentary debate over ‘pro-Israel influence’ sends a dreadful message

At a time when the number of antisemitic incidents in the UK are running at near-historic levels, it beggars belief that, this week, our parliament will stage a debate on “pro-Israel influence on politics and democracy in Britain”.

Jews have been stabbed in the streets, murdered at their synagogues, and harassed and intimidated in schools, hospitals and campuses and, somehow, the real problem Britain faces is the alleged outsize influence of the “pro-Israel lobby”.

This is not parliament’s doing or the government’s. It’s the result of a petition pushed by a plethora of extremist groups – like 5Pillars, an Islamist news site, which hosts fascists and neo-Nazis like Mark Collett and Nick Griffin to rail against Zionists – clearing the 100,000 signatures requiring a parliamentary debate.

This debate is nothing short of an opportunity for centuries-old antisemitic tropes about Jews, money and power to be peddled and propagated in the mother of parliaments. It is a dark, disturbing day for Britain – a country which the Chief Rabbi, Sir Ephraim Mirvis, once described as “being good to the Jews” as well as “the Jews being good for Britain”.

As we all know, antisemitism has metastasized in recent decades. As the late Lord Sacks, the former Chief Rabbi, suggested in 2017: “In the Middle Ages Jews were hated because of their religion. In the 19th and early 20th century they were hated because of their race. Today they are hated because of their nation state, the state of Israel.”

Consequently, the myth of an all-powerful Jewish conspiracy pulling the world’s strings – most notoriously propagated by that infamous forgery, the Protocols of the Elders of Zion – has evolved over time.

But the essence remains the same: that Jews are engaged in a surreptitious and malevolent effort to subvert the national interest to promote their own agenda – and, when they’re caught out, they attempt to deflect criticism by raising the false charge of antisemitism.

This is unsurprising: anti-Zionism – the all-consuming hatred of the world’s only Jewish state which is today so prevalent in many of our public institutions and culture – was contrived in Stalin’s Soviet Union by a group of far-right nationalist authors who, as expert Izabella Tabarovsky put it, “rewrote the antisemitic conspiracy theory of the Protocols as a Marxist-Leninist critique of Zionism fit for consumption by Soviet Communist elites and the global left”.

Pro-Israel influence debate in Westminster sparks outcry over antisemitism

Parliamentarians from across the political spectrum have condemned the staging of a Westminster debate on alleged pro-Israel influence in UK politics.

A succession of MPs warned that its premise echoes antisemitic conspiracy theories at a time when Britain’s Jewish community faces mounting threats and attacks.

Monday’s debate, prompted by a public petition calling for an inquiry into the influence of pro-Israel groups, was held against the backdrop of increased antisemitic incidents in the UK.

Many MPs argued that the very nature of the petition risked legitimising age-old prejudices.

“Why is Israel singled out in this way? Why not Gulf countries, Iran, eastern Europe or the USA?” asked Andrew Mitchell, Conservative MP and former minister.

“The petition is being discussed at a time when the Jewish community are clearly under threat and are suffering numerous hideous attacks.

“I am not sure I trust the motivation of the petition organisers. I fear the whole thing smacks of an antisemitic conspiracy theory.”

Jewish Labour MP Peter Prinsley echoed these concerns at the debate, held in Westminster Hall.

“Shame on those who have orchestrated this regurgitation of antisemitic tropes,” he said. : It is ancient just as it is predictable. … The idea that Jews exercise hidden influence over politics, democracy and society is not new, it is an ancient conspiracy theory repeatedly used to isolate Jews, undermine social cohesion and stoke hatred.

“Let us come to our senses. We must reject antisemitism in all its forms, reject conspiracy theory dressed up as political analysis, and defend a politics based on evidence, decency and truth.”

Eight Palestine Action activists ‘planned Elbit attack to cause maximum damage’

Eight Palestine Action supporters allegedly organised an attack to cause “the maximum amount of damage” to an Israel-linked weapons manufacturer in the UK, a court has heard.

The defendants are jointly charged with criminal damage and violent disorder at an Elbit Systems’ factory in Filton, near Bristol, on August 6 2024.

None of them was at the scene at the time, but their plans included compiling an equipment list, reconnaissance, and purchasing tools and weapons used by others, Deanna Heer KC told the Old Bailey on Monday.

The prosecutor said in her trial opening: “The defendants in the dock may not have gone to the premises that night, but they are equally responsible for what happened there because they were responsible for planning and organising the attack and ensuring that it was executed so that the maximum amount of damage was caused.”

The plan was to “to shut Elbit down for as long as possible”, Ms Heer said.

Two terrorists killed after firebombing near Karmei Tzur

Israel Defense Forces soldiers killed two terrorists and neutralized a third during a counterterrorism operation near the community of Karmei Tzur in Judea on Sunday, the military said.

According to the IDF, troops identified several suspects burning tires and hurling fire bombs toward the community, endangering residents and security forces.

The soldiers opened fire, killing two of the terrorists and neutralizing an additional suspect. No Israeli casualties were reported.

The military said the burning tires sparked a fire in an area adjacent to Karmei Tzur. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene and worked to extinguish the blaze.

IDF troops launched a search for additional suspects believed to have been involved in the incident. The Israeli military said its forces would continue operating to thwart terrorist activity and maintain security for residents in the area.

Seattle soccer league glorifying terrorism used public parks without permits

A Seattle soccer league that has glorified terrorism and the Islamic Republic of Iran in its promotional materials has been using athletic fields at public parks without the required permits, according to Seattle Parks and Recreation.

JNS asked the department whether the Fedayeen Football League, which has hosted weekly matches at Cal Anderson Park in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood and at Green Lake Park, had obtained permits to use the public athletic fields.

“This group did not submit a permit for this event,” Christina Hirsch, a spokesperson for Seattle Parks and Recreation, told JNS. “Their athletic field use would need a permit, of which they did not have for either of these two advertised athletic dates.”

Seattle Parks and Recreation requires permits to reserve athletic fields and other park facilities for organized events and public gatherings. Organized sports teams are generally required to obtain field reservations or permits for scheduled games and exclusive use of park facilities.

The soccer club, which is named for the Arabic term for “those who sacrifice themselves,” has promoted its events with materials depicting armed militants wearing keffiyehs, missiles striking urban areas and clips from news articles referencing attacks on Israel and the deaths of Israeli soldiers.

Hirsch told JNS that even if the group had applied for a permit, the parks department “does not review or moderate marketing materials, fliers or social media content for permitted events.”

Pro-Israel candidate wins Colombian presidential election

Colombian conservative candidate Abelardo de La Espriella has clinched a narrow victory in Sunday’s presidential election, according to official results, in another gain for the right-wing wave sweeping across Latin America.

De La Espriella won 49.7% of the vote, and his left-wing rival, Sen. Ivan Cepeda from outgoing President Gustavo Petro‘s party, received 48.7%, with nearly 100% of the ballots counted in the runoff election.

A 47-year-old lawyer and political outsider nicknamed “El Tigre,” or “The Tiger,” de la Espriella pledged during the election campaign to open an embassy in Jerusalem and renew a strategic alliance with Israel.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar congratulated de la Espriella on his victory.

“The Tiger won, Colombia won!” he posted on X. “Congratulations to my friend Abelardo “The Tiger” de la Espriella on his impressive win in Colombia’s presidential election. We expect to work with President-elect de la Espriella to revive relations between Israel and Colombia and bring them to an all-time high.

De La Espriella will enter into office on Aug. 7.

Petro severed diplomatic ties with Israel in 2024 over the Gaza war triggered by the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack and expelled Israeli diplomats from the South American country.

The right-wing has made gains across Latin America, including in Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica, Bolivia and Ecuador, where voters concerned by high crime and a weak economy voted for conservative presidents in their most recent elections.

Maccabi Tel Aviv’s Hélio Varela scores at FIFA World Cup

Cape Verde winger Hélio Varela, who plays for Israeli Premier League club Maccabi Tel Aviv, scored with his first touch after coming off the bench in a 2-2 World Cup group-stage draw against Uruguay in Miami on Sunday evening local time.

Varela, 24, found the net in the 61st minute, moments after entering the match, helping Cape Verde secure a point. Born in Portugal, he represents Cape Verde at the international level.

Yoga enthusiasts salute the Tel Aviv sun

Hundreds of yoga enthusiasts performed a series of 108 sun salutations at the Tel Aviv port on Sunday to mark the 12th International Day of Yoga.

The yogis and yoginis gathered at the invitation of the Indian embassy in Israel, which has been hosting the annual June 21 yoga event since 2014, when it was first declared by India as a global celebration.

This year’s event focused on the continuous sequence of sun salutations, a series of meditative and active yoga postures that warm up the body.

The number 108 has special significance in yogic philosophy, with 108 sun salutations traditionally performed in succession to mark transitions or major life events.

The 12th International Day of Yoga revolved around the theme of graceful aging, through yoga activities.

JPost Editorial: Escalation must cost: Current Switzerland talks leave Iran stronger, Israel exposed

The United States and Iran concluded talks in Switzerland on Monday. Mediators Qatar and Pakistan described “encouraging progress” and announced a 60-day road map toward a final agreement.

The talks had created a “good foundation,” US Vice President JD Vance said, adding that Iran agreed to allow International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors back into the country. Washington also issued a temporary 60-day license that allows Iranian oil and petrochemical sales through August 21.

The talks included discussion of a Lebanon “deconfliction cell” aimed at preventing renewed escalation between Israel and Hezbollah. Israel was absent. Iran was present.

That fact should trouble every Israeli. Diplomacy with Iran can be useful when it weakens the regime, freezes a threat, or buys time under conditions that favor the West. The Switzerland talks risk giving Tehran time, money, legitimacy, and a role in managing the fires it helped set.

Over the past 24 hours, criticism has focused on one concern: Tehran appears to have gained a road map without publicly accepting the hard conditions that would make it meaningful. It appears to have secured breathing room on sanctions while its proxies remain armed. It appears to have turned the Strait of Hormuz into a bargaining chip and Lebanon into part of a broader US-Iran understanding.

Iran should not be rewarded for threatening global shipping. It should not receive economic relief after using regional chaos to force the world back to the table. It should not gain influence over arrangements involving Lebanon while Hezbollah remains its most important Arab proxy and the direct threat facing Israel’s border communities.

A Lebanon deconfliction mechanism may sound technical. In reality, it could become a diplomatic trap. Israel cannot allow its freedom of action against Hezbollah to be filtered through a process shaped by Iran. The residents of Metula, Kiryat Shmona, Moshav Margaliot, Kibbutz Manara, and other northern communities do not need another committee. They need Hezbollah pushed back, disarmed, and deterred.

Most importantly, how much damage will be done to the sanctions architecture that took years to build?

Tehran could also gain access to tens of billions of dollars in additional oil revenue and portions of the roughly $100 billion in Iranian funds frozen abroad. That would be a massive windfall.

If the MOU includes broad waivers covering banking and transportation transactions, that would represent far more than a narrow licensing arrangement. It would fracture the core architecture of American oil and financial sanctions.

Once the United States normalizes Iranian oil exports to major buyers such as China, India, and the United Arab Emirates, alongside the repatriation of oil revenues back to Tehran, the damage becomes difficult to reverse.

If companies, traders, insurers, shipping firms, banks, and governments become accustomed to doing business with Iran again, restoring today’s pressure campaign would take years, not weeks — precisely why sanctions relief should come at the end of successful negotiations, not at the beginning.

And prematurely weakening this leverage will make it even more difficult to secure the final nuclear agreement with Iran that the MOU is supposedly designed to deliver.

The regime has played this game successfully against multiple American presidents. Indeed, the only arena in which the Islamic Republic has consistently defeated the United States is at the negotiating table.

President Trump argued he still retains the military option. But leverage erodes. Deployments end, Washington’s attention shifts, and Tehran may simply pocket economic concessions while waiting for pressure to dissipate or for a next president not willing to stop Iran.

If negotiations fail — as they likely will — the administration should be prepared immediately to restore maximum economic pressure, return to military operations including in Hormuz, and suffocate the regime’s remaining sources of power.

There is one final instrument that every administration has neglected.

The Iranian people.

Economic pressure and military power can weaken the regime. Only the Iranian people can ultimately end it.

Nothing can match the power of tens of millions of Iranians who despise the regime that rules them. No one has sacrificed more to challenge the Islamic Republic.

Despite enduring killings, incarceration, torture, corruption, and economic ruin, they continue to resist.

The truly decisive question is not how long the United States can pressure this regime.

It is whether America is finally prepared to help Iranians finish the job themselves.

President Trump should immediately instruct his intelligence services to build a plan. Call it Operation People’s Fury. And have it ready for when Iranians courageously return to the streets, as they have done repeatedly for decades.

Hamas held 'top secret' meeting with French officials, discussed return to '1967 borders'

Senior leaders of Hamas' political bureau held a highly confidential meeting with a French delegation, according to a Monday report from Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat.

It reported that the meeting took place "recently" in an unspecified country in the Middle East.

Two Palestinian sources spoke to Asharq Al-Awsat, one from Palestinian civil society elements who maintain working relations with France and other European countries, and the other from a Palestinian organization close to Hamas. They described the meeting as "top secret," adding that some Palestinian factions were only informed shortly before or after it was held.

This marks the first reported meeting of Hamas leaders with European officials since the October 7 massacre.

According to the report, the French delegation included current and former diplomats, as well as members of parliament from the ruling coalition and opposition parties.

Focus on Palestinian Internal affairs
A source from Palestinian civil society said the talks were largely focused on Palestinian internal affairs, improving national reconciliation, and advancing a political process aimed at ending the conflict with Israel.

The source also told Asharq Al-Awsat that discussions also touched on supporting establishing a Palestinian state within "the 1967 borders," meaning the pre-Six-Day War armistice lines.

Since October 7, France has been a leading advocate for a two-state solution that would allow for the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside the State of Israel.

'Everybody loved him': Michael Mizrahi identified as civilian victim in Côte-des-Neiges shootings

The civilian victim of a shooting in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood on Monday was Michael Mizrahi, 68.

Rabbi Mendel Raskin, who confirmed the news to The Gazette, said he had been Mizrahi’s rabbi for more than 30 years at Beth Chabad in Côte-St-Luc.

“Everybody loved him,” Raskin said, describing Mizrahi as a generous Jewish man who sold suits for a living.

Mizrahi was killed during a sequence of events that also resulted in the death of an officer, Const. Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, as well as the suspected shooter. A second officer was also injured.

Police have so far declined to comment on the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Raskin said Mizrahi had originally come from Lebanon before moving to Israel and later settling in Montreal.

Confusion over Mizrahi’s whereabouts

In the aftermath of the shootings, there was some confusion over what had happened to Mizrahi, according to Rabbi Barak Hetsroni of the Jewish General Hospital, who knows the Mizrahi family.

It was rumoured he had been taken to a hospital and was still alive, but this turned out to be untrue.

Amid this chaos, Hetsroni said he was contacted by Mizrahi’s son in an effort to find his father. The hope was that Hetsroni’s connections to the Jewish General Hospital could lead to answers.

He accompanied Mizrahi’s son to the scene, where they ultimately confirmed Mizrahi’s identity.

Hetsroni described him as a “gentleman” and a “good man.”

Jewish man killed in Montreal shooting that also left a police officer dead

A shooting on Monday in a heavily Jewish neighborhood of Montreal left three people dead, including a civilian member of the Jewish community, a police officer and the alleged assailant, police in the Canadian city said.

But police indicated that the shooter had not been intentionally targeting the Jewish community, and some initial reports suggested that the civilian may have been killed by errant gunfire.

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), a prominent Canadian civil society group, named the slain civilian as Michael Moshe Mizrahi, describing him as “a beloved member of Montreal’s Jewish community.”

According to the Chabad movement, Mizrahi was a regular at the organization’s MADA community center in Montreal.

“He loves to celebrate together with everyone,” MADA community member David Kakon said, according to Chabad. “Someone who is always smiling, always has a kind word for someone else. Loves his family, loves Israel, and loves being a Jew.”

While the bloodshed occurred in a partly Jewish neighborhood that includes kosher markets and restaurants, police declined comment on the shooter’s motive. French language public broadcaster Radio Canada said the gunman was connected to “incel” ideology — a misogynistic worldview that fueled the man responsible for one of Canada’s most deadly mass killings, a 2018 vehicle-ramming in Toronto that killed 10.

Local Canadian news outlets published portions of the shooter’s manifesto which suggested he may have been targeting the offices of Aylo, the parent company of PornHub — the world’s largest pornography website — and its subsidiaries.

Montreal Police identified the deceased officer as Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouan, 34. He had been with the force since 2021.

“It is with immense sadness that we confirm the death of one of our police officers in the line of duty,” Montreal police said in a statement posted on X.

Montreal police chief Fady Dagher said the incident was “more than terrible,” adding: “It’s a tragedy, a nightmare.”

Canadian human rights museum’s lone Jewish trustee resigns over ‘one-sided’ exhibit on ‘nakba’

Mark Berlin, the only Jewish trustee of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, a federal institution in Winnipeg, resigned on Monday over what he called a “one-sided” exhibit scheduled to address the “nakba,” the term some use for the “catastrophe” of the founding of the modern Israeli state.

“The controversy surrounding this exhibit, and my unsuccessful efforts to fight against what I believe to be institutional anti-Zionism and to bring a more balanced perspective to the exhibit’s development, has undermined my confidence in the museum as a place the Canadian public can trust to present an accurate historical exhibit, replacing trust with ideology,” the board member of more than eight years wrote in his resignation letter.

A legal scholar and human rights expert, Berlin submitted the letter to Marc Miller, Canadian minister of identity and culture.

He wrote that he stayed on the board after Oct. 7 due to his “false hope” that he “could assist management and some of my board trustees in developing their wider understanding of the complexities of the Middle East and this particular historical episode.”

That hope is now lost, he wrote in the resignation letter.

“Presenting the Palestinian displacement of 1948 without its proper historical and political context offers a narrow, one-sided argument of history that can only deepen the distrust and animosity that currently exists between Jews and Muslims in this country,” he stated.

“The museum loses its legitimacy when it presents as historical truth a narrative that erases a crucial part of the history,” Berlin added. “A museum that purports to tell stories about history does not get to change history.”

The exhibit, slated to open on June 27, “explores the human rights violations related to the ongoing forced displacement and dispossession of Palestinians,” per the museum website.

It features personal testimonies from Palestinian Canadians “reflecting on their ongoing struggle for justice and human rights” and revealing “enduring patterns of loss and resistance,” the museum states.

Berlin wrote that in the two years since the museum began developing the exhibit, it repeatedly rebuffed requests from the Jewish community to be consulted in a meaningful way, despite consultations occurring ahead of prior exhibits.

UN Watch chief seeks indictment of UNRWA head

The executive director of U.N. Watch on Monday called for the indictment of Philippe Lazzarini, the outgoing commissioner-general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East ( UNRWA), accusing him of crimes against humanity over the agency’s alleged role in enabling and perpetuating Hamas terrorism.

Speaking at the second JNS International Policy Summit in Jerusalem, Hillel Neuer, executive director of the Geneva-based watchdog organization, argued that UNRWA had become deeply intertwined with Hamas and should be held accountable for its actions and failures.

“For years, UNRWA has been funded by Western governments—the European Union, Canada, Australia and others—with millions of dollars,” he said. “Yet it has not resettled a single Palestinian refugee. Its structure perpetuates the conflict rather than resolves it.”

He challenged UNRWA’s repeated claims that it teaches U.N. values and human rights, citing senior figures in the agency’s teachers’ unions who he said had ties to Hamas.

Among them is Suhail al-Hindi, the longtime head of UNRWA’s teachers’ union in Gaza, whom Neuer described as a member of Hamas’s political bureau who was photographed with the late Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who Israeli troops killed in 2024.

He also cited Fathi al-Sharif, head of UNRWA’s teachers’ union in Lebanon, who was killed in an Israeli strike. Hamas later identified al-Sharif as one of its leaders.

“I’m not telling you he was Hamas,” said Neuer. “Hamas told you he was Hamas.”

He dismissed repeated claims by U.N. officials that Hamas’s clandestine nature made such affiliations difficult to detect. “It wasn’t underground,” he said. “It was public. It was on social media. Hamas announced it openly.”

With Lazzarini preparing to leave office some six years after his appointment to head UNRWA, Neuer said the time had come for legal accountability.

“We are demanding the indictment of Philippe Lazzarini for crimes against humanity,” he said.

United Nations Special Rapporteur on counterterrorism has been accused of ideological bias and conflicts of interest in a new report from the Geneva-based group UN Watch.

A United Nations expert on violence against women has defended her acceptance of $170,000 in funding from Saudi Arabia and a Gulf Arab bloc after a watchdog group questioned whether the donations undermine the independence of her mandate.

The controversy arose after UN Watch published a report showing that the office of UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women Reem Alsalem received $70,000 from Saudi Arabia in 2024, and the next year $100,000 from the Gulf Cooperation Council, which comprises Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates.

Under mounting pressure for taking funding from regimes like Saudi Arabia that violate women’s rights, Alsalem responded to the UN Watch report today by releasing her first-ever statement about her sources of funding, arguing that the contributions were disclosed under UN transparency rules, administered by the UN human rights office, and did not influence her work.

Officials from the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Kuwait reportedly resent being sidelined during the negotiations and complain that they were largely excluded from discussions that directly affect their security.

JD Vance Is Wrong: Israel Is Not Just Another Ally

[US Vice President JD Vance] is wrong to treat the fears of America's most reliable Middle Eastern partner as a political inconvenience. And he is wrong if he believes that America First requires public impatience with Israel and the Gulf while granting diplomatic patience to Iran.

This is not how a great power reassures its friends. This is not how America preserves deterrence. And this is not how the Vice President of the United States should speak when the security of Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Kuwait is at stake.

America First cannot mean allies last.

America must lead without losing the trust of its allies.

Israel, for generations, has stood as a democratic ally in a region where democracy is rare, danger is permanent, and the cost of miscalculation can be existential. To speak of Israel as merely "an ally like any other" may please a certain political audience, but it does not reflect the depth of history, sacrifice, intelligence cooperation, shared values, and strategic interdependence that define this relationship.

Nor is Israel alone in facing the consequences of Iranian power.... Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Kuwait do not experience Iran as an abstraction. They experience it through missiles, drones, proxy networks, air-defense alerts, threats to shipping lanes, and the permanent pressure of a regime that has made destabilization a method of statecraft.

These countries have the right to be heard. They have the right to ask questions. They have the right to demand clarity before being asked to live with the consequences of an agreement negotiated above their heads.

The Abraham Accords were....were an act of strategic courage. Countries chose peace, modernization, coexistence, and openness because they believed that American leadership could help build a new regional order. They trusted President Trump's vision and the promise that peace would bring security and prosperity, not uncertainty and abandonment.

If the United States wants regional partners to choose moderation over extremism, normalization over rejection, and modernization over ideological darkness, then Washington must show that such choices are rewarded with respect, consultation, and protection. No country will take risks for peace if it believes that, when danger arrives, America will speak more harshly to its friends than to its enemies.

First round of US-Iran talks concludes, with an agreement on ‘de-confliction cell’ for Lebanon

The first round of talks in Switzerland between Washington and Tehran concluded early on Monday morning, with mediators Qatar and Pakistan saying that “encouraging progress has been made.”

In a joint statement, the mediating parties said that it was agreed to establish a High Level Committee to lead focused discussions on nuclear, sanctions and a monitoring and dispute resolution group to ensure the execution of the Memorandum of Understanding signed last week.

“The High Level Committee has agreed upon a road map toward reaching a final deal within 60 days, laying the foundation for the immediate commencement of further technical talks,” said Qatar and Pakistan.

In addition, negotiations yielded the creation of a “de-confliction cell,” which will include delegations from the United States, Iran and the Lebanese government, but not Israel, aimed at ending the conflict in Lebanon, the statement continued.

Technical talks are scheduled to continue throughout the week at the Bürgenstock Resort near Lucerne in Switzerland.

Esmaeil Baghaei, a spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, announced on Monday that Tehran’s delegation was “en route to the homeland” following “intensive discussions on the implementation of the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding to end the war.”

The talks “began on the morning of Sunday ... in Switzerland (Lake Lucerne), and continued until the early hours of Monday morning,” Baghaei wrote on X.

He stressed that Tehran’s implementation of the MoU was contingent on Israel ending military operations against Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon and Washington lifting sanctions, including on oil exports.

“The guiding principle is ‘commitment for commitment.’ The Islamic Republic of Iran, while closely monitoring the fulfillment of the other side’s’ obligations, will employ all available means at its disposal to ensure that those obligations are fulfilled,” he said.

Iran’s lead negotiator insists Strait of Hormuz will be managed by Iran

The lead negotiator of the Iranian delegation, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, insists the Strait of Hormuz will be managed by Iran and will follow international laws.

Ghalibaf, who is also the speaker of the parliament, speaks with Iran state media on a plane on his way back from Switzerland.

“Hopefully we can activate the strait again, in terms of passage, and bring prosperity back to regional and global economy,” he says.

Ghalibaf confirms that the issue of releasing the frozen assets as well as the sale of Iranian oil were discussed in the talks with the US today.

Shin Bet chief said to fear Oct 7-style attack on Eilat, despite no intel on threat

Shin Bet chief David Zini warned in closed forums recently about a potential mass attack on the southern city of Eilat resembling the Hamas invasion of October 7, 2023, the Haaretz daily reported on Monday, citing several unnamed security sources.

According to the report, Zini ordered several senior officials in the security agency to give top priority to preparations for a scenario of a large-scale attack on the city, either from Jordanian territory or by sea, deeming the area a security weak spot due to its relative geographic remoteness.

Citing unnamed security sources, the report said Zini is anticipating a coordinated land invasion and attack by several terror groups, with the participation of Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who are located more than 2,000 kilometers from Israel but have fired missiles and drones at Eilat in the past.

The security sources cast doubt on the likelihood of such an attack, with one telling the outlet that “no one in the security establishment knows what intelligence [Zini] is relying on” to assert that Israel’s southernmost city is so vulnerable.

Still, several weeks ago, there was an attempted infiltration into Eilat from Jordan via the sea.

According to the IDF, Navy sailors of the 916th Squadron aboard a Dvora-class patrol boat spotted a suspect on a jet ski who crossed into Israeli waters in the Eilat Bay area on May 29.

“The forces fired warning shots into the air to drive the suspect away, and after he did not stop, the forces fired at the vessel in accordance with the rules of engagement,” the military said at the time.

The IDF said the suspect turned back to Jordan. A military source added that the suspect was injured, possibly by the gunfire, and was being interrogated by Jordanian security officials.

Netanyahu: Israel won’t leave Lebanon security zone

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated on Monday that Israel will “insist” on remaining in the security zone in Southern Lebanon “for as long as necessary.”

“I firmly insist that we remain in the security zone in Southern Lebanon for as long as necessary in order to protect the residents of the north and every citizen of the state,” Netanyahu said in Hebrew remarks shared by the Prime Minister’s Office.

“My directive, together with that of the defense minister, to the IDF is clear and has not changed: Our fighters in Southern Lebanon have complete freedom of action to thwart any direct or emerging threat against them or against the residents of the north,” he said.

“The IDF has no restrictions in this regard,” Netanyahu added. “I stand behind them, and the entire nation stands behind them.”

Earlier on Monday, Defense Minister Israel Katz said the Jewish state will not withdraw from its positions in the security zone, including the Beaufort Ridge, which he said is vital to defending northern communities and Israeli forces.

“Israel has no intention of withdrawing from the Beaufort, which is an integral part of the security zone in Lebanon and essential for the defense of the Galilee communities and IDF forces,” Katz wrote on X. “As Prime Minister Netanyahu and I have made clear—Israel will not withdraw from the security zone in Lebanon,” the post continued.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar told his New Zealand counterpart, Winston Peters, over the phone on Monday that Jerusalem will respect the ceasefire in Lebanon as long as Hezbollah does not breach it.

“We don’t have territorial ambitions in Lebanon, but we will not withdraw from the security zone and expose our citizens to Hezbollah’s attacks and possible invasion,” Sa’ar wrote on X.

Hamas Sniper Who Worked for Al Jazeera Dies in Israeli Airstrike, Joins Long List of Terrorists Disguised As Journalists: AJ Praises ‘Kind, Principled’ Worker

A Hamas military operative masquerading as an Al Jazeera photojournalist died in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza this weekend, according to the Israel Defense Forces. It’s the latest example of a jihadist militant operating under the guise of a journalist in Gaza.

The IDF announced the death of Ahmed Samir Muhammad Washah on Saturday, saying he was "a Hamas terrorist who posed a threat and served as an Al Jazeera Photojournalist."

Washah, a 25-year old Gaza resident, was killed during a "precise strike in the central Gaza Strip" that also killed two other Hamas operatives. Washah’s brother, fellow Al Jazeera journalist Muhammad Samir Muhammad Washah, was killed several weeks ago in a similar IDF attack targeting Hamas operatives inside Gaza. Washah’s late brother acted as "a key terrorist in Hamas' rocket and weapons production headquarters," the IDF said. The Washah brothers join around a dozen or so Al Jazeera reporters and photojournalists who have been killed by the IDF for working alongside terror groups like Hamas and its Palestinian Islamic Jihad counterpart. Israel has provided extensive evidence since Hamas’s Oct. 7 terror attack that scores of supposed journalists in Gaza are actually terrorist operatives, including at least half a dozen Al Jazeera employees and more than 150 others.

Al Jazeera, which is controlled by the rulers of Qatar, has long been cozy with terrorists, serving as a repository for al Qaeda hostage and beheading videos during the second Gulf war and using its unrivaled platform to fan anti-Israel sentiment across the Arab world for 30 years. Despite Israel repeatedly offering documentary proof that Al Jazeera employees are moonlighting as militants, or vice versa, Al Jazeera has persistently denied harboring terrorists and condemned Israel for targeting journalists whose reporting disagrees with it.

The Washington Free Beacon first reported in late May that the Committee to Protect Journalists, a New York-based advocacy group that accuses Israel of intentionally targeting reporters, quietly removed multiple terrorists’ names from its widely cited list of journalists killed in Gaza. At least six names that the CPJ deleted without mention include a member of "Hamas’ Jabalia Battalion," "a terror combatant for Islamic Jihad," "a commander in the Nasser Salah Al-Din Brigades," and three other known jihadist militants.

Finally naming their war dead, Gazan terror groups admit some slain journalists were fighters

On July 10, 2025, an Israeli drone fired a missile at a home in central Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp, killing a man identified as Ahmed Abu Eisha. According to reports, Abu Eisha had been a journalist for Palestine Today, a television channel affiliated with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, citing a colleague, Abu Eisha was killed shortly after returning home from “covering events” at a hospital in Deir al-Balah.

Abu Eisha was “polite, calm, and kind; someone who avoided conflict,” wrote CPJ, quoting the colleague. It noted his hard work pursuing stories and his recent completion of a PhD in Arabic, including him in its tally of hundreds of journalists it alleges Israel has killed since October 7, 2023.

But there was more to the Gazan as well.

On June 1, the PIJ’s military wing announced that Abu Eisha had been a unit commander and operative in the organization’s “Central Information Unit” within its Central Brigade when he was killed. While no official description of the unit’s role was provided, it appears to have been involved in intelligence gathering and analysis.

The disclosure was one of dozens made by PIJ and Hamas in recent weeks announcing the deaths of its fighters during the war, after years in which the groups declined to identify nearly any of its combatants killed in the fighting.

A review by The Times of Israel of many of the hundreds of names of operatives published on official Hamas and PIJ military-wing Telegram channels and affiliated accounts found several people who had previously been identified as journalists, or other civilians.

The releases, which continue to be published at a rate of seven or eight a day, seemingly cast new light on persistent accusations that the Israel Defense Forces targeted journalists during the war, lending credence, in at least some cases, to Israeli assertions that they were actually legitimate military targets contributing to the fighting.

White House defends Vance by citing Al Jazeera coverage

The White House’s rapid response social media account on Monday criticized media coverage of Vice President JD Vance’s participation in U.S. peace talks with Iran in Switzerland — and pointed to Al Jazeera’s reporting as evidence.

The rapid response team, a part of the White House’s communications office that defends the Trump administration’s record through social media, criticized media outlets on X that reported on Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declining to participate in a photo op with Vance, and Qatari officials not shaking Vance’s hand when photos were taken, as intentional digs at the United States.

“A lot of biased media outlets and Democrats were pushing a fake narrative yesterday about the talks in Switzerland,” the rapid response team wrote. “Here’s the real story from people actually in the room,” it said, referring to a tweet from Al Jazeera that included video of Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani rejecting such reports. Al Thani told Al Jazeera, according to the outlet’s social media post that the White House team shared, “that reports of him snubbing the US vice president were unfounded, saying they had spent hours together during negotiations and maintained a strong partnership throughout the process.”

Al Jazeera is a Qatari state-controlled news organization long criticized for its sympathetic coverage of Hamas and hostility to Israel. The outlet, which is financed by the Qatari government and ruling Al Thani family, has faced accusations that it spreads misinformation to promote Qatar’s preferred narrative on a range of sensitive topics, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment on the rapid response team’s post complimenting Al Jazeera’s coverage.
