Will Subarus qualify? Yes Subarus will qualify. More information will be coming soon but it seems at least the 4 cylinder models will qualify for the required 22mpg minimum combined city-hghway EPA rating.

What's a Clunker? To qualify, it must be 1. driveable 2. insured and registered for the previous year 3. get a combined MPG of 18 or less

How much will I get? If the new car is at least 4mpg improvement in the combined EPA rating, you get $3,500. 10mpg+ improvement gets $4,500 voucher.

How do I find the EPA ratings? Get the MPG on the new car you want to purchase and on your Clunker Vehicle MPG

When will it start 'That is unclear. The legislation takes affect as of July 1, 2009. However, it will take time for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to work out details of the program and set up a procedure for dealerships to get registered with the program. So, it may be a few weeks, or as long as a month, before buyers will be able to participate.'

2010 models - All models announced so far have 'Option Package' upgrades. So for examples- the All Weather Pkg that was standard on most 09 Premium/SE models is now a $400 'option package', and Navigation is an 'Option Package' on any model it's available on.

2010 Outback All new and redesigned, slightly larger interior space but overall length is 1" shorter, more rear seat room, 3.6L 6 cylinder (used in the Tribeca) replaces 3.0L. 2 new transmissions for the 2.5L models - 6 speed manual and CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatic. No XT turbo model, it's gone. Premium name replaces SE. Premium models are available with a number of 'Option Packages'.

2010 Legacy All new and redesigned, slightly larger, more rear seat room, 3.6L 6 cylinder (used in the Tribeca) replaces 3.0L. 2 new transmissions for the 2.5L models- 6 speed manual and CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatic. 2010 Foresters Minor changes as far as I can tell - Premium gets a power driver seat, Navigation gets bluetooth, Paprika Red available (see 09 Impreza). Models now are equipped with 'Option Package' upgrades- so for example the All Weather Pkg that was standard on most 09 Premium (except for early production) is now a $400 'option package' and not all Premiums will have it.

Who says you have to be big or global or green to survive?
But how is Subaru doing it? It has no hybrid or electric car. Its fuel efficiency is nothing special, and Subarus are definitely not the darlings of Hollywood stars. The company sells only 600,000 vehicles a year worldwide, making it maybe the 20th largest automaker...
Its major markets are Japan and then the U.S., with 187,699 sales here last year, outselling only Mitsubishi, Suzuki , and Porsche. But those 2008 sales were a notch above the year before, and first-quarter 2009 sales are a notch above, too. Subaru is proof that you don't have to be huge to hold your own...
All Subarus sold in the U.S. are all-wheel-drive, but as for looks, they're plain -even dull- family type wagons and sedans. The exceptions are the WRX and STI models. They look plain, too - all the better not to provoke the police - but these models are for the "fast and furious" crowd who like 'em hot.
So why the success? Well, Subarus have good quality; they are always recommended by Consumer Reports. They were early into the all-wheel-drive market. Also, the Subaru engine, called a "boxer" design, is unusual--imagine a V engine turned on its side.
But there's more to the company's success, especially now. "We're fortunate. Our customer is a financially secure customer," says Executive Vice President Tom Doll. But, then, Subarus aren't expensive. They run between $20,000 to $30,000 for the most part, maybe closer to $40,000 for a just few models. Personally, I think there are people who want all-wheel-drive, but don't like the size, the gas-guzzler label, the macho looks of the other SUVs and crossovers. The Subaru crowd is terribly loyal, too, and you hardly ever hear a bad word about them...
I must admit I have a soft spot for Subaru. I once was in an accident with a Subaru wagon. Entirely my fault, a one-car accident. The Subaru was totaled, but my only injury was a tiny scratch on the palm of one hand. I figure I owe my life to Subaru.
While Japanese cars are particularly popular in California, Subaru's big regional markets are the Northeast, New England and the Pacific Northwest.
Why? Traction. The all-wheel drive is good for snow-covered roads, especially hilly snow-covered roads. That's where Subaru made its mark. Even the American headquarters is in New Jersey, not the West Coast with the other Japanese automakers.
Subaru's sales hang around that 180,000 mark, but if they don't go down, they don't go up much, either...
Subaru is the car-making arm of Fuji Heavy Industries in Japan. At one time, Nissan owned a 20% share; then General Motors owned it but nothing came of that, either. Now Toyota owns one-sixth of Fuji. The Subaru plant in Indiana is shared with Toyota, which stepped in after Subaru's first partner, Isuzu, gave up and quit the U.S. market.
Alas, Subaru's design efforts to break out into new sales territory have been, well, strange. There was a sports car, the SVX--seriously weird looking. There was the Baja, a wagon with a pickup back-end. And last, the Tribeca, the top-of the-line model, named after a Manhattan neighborhood, with an odd-looking front end and interior. It's been redone to look almost "normal" now, and is still on the market. Now Subaru has just shown bigger versions of its Legacy sedan and new Outback wagon, just as everyone else seems to be interested in talking about smaller vehicles.
There's no guarantee Subaru's sales will stay ahead in the maelstrom. And despite strong sales, profits are waning because of the strength of the Japanese yen and other spending. Still, Subaru seem better-off than many of its peers. Even the U.S. inventories are low, a 58-day supply of Subarus at dealers as of April 1, according to Automotive News, compared with 65 days for Toyota, 92 days for Honda and 122 days for GM.

All I can think is that virtue--building a good, unpretentious car with a reasonable price tag and high quality--is still rewarded in the auto world. And that can't be bad. The article

Subaru slightly down......

Subaru March sales down 3% over March 2008, a small drop compared to other car companies, and the first negative month in some time but SoA is till 2% ahead for the year so far.

While SoA was down 3% for March 09 vs March 08, for comparison Toyota was down 36.8%, GM 35%, Hummer 75% (GM is trying to sell Hummer), Honda down 33%, VW 17%.

Redesigned 2010 Legacy sedan is larger with more interior and rear seat legroom, new standard 6 speed manual and Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission) transmissions. The 3.6L 6 cylinder from the Tribeca replaces the 3.0L, and the GT turbo has a larger turbo with more horsepower and torque and est 0-60 under 6 seconds.

Four SUVs earn top rollover safety mark in U.S. test

The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety said on Tuesday that four of 12 small SUVs it tested received its top rating for their ability to withstand roof damage in rollover accidents that often prove deadly.
It was the first time that the safety watchdog group, which is funded by the insurance industry, has released vehicle ratings based on a new roof strength rating system.
Four small SUVs received the top rating of "good" from the institute -- the Volkswagen Tiguan, Subaru Forester, Honda Element and Jeep Patriot.

The new 09 Forester 2.5X has been designated "Best New Crossover" in the Small Crossover category and the 09 Impreza 2.5i has been named "Best in Class" in the "Wagons and Minivans" category. "Best in Class" and "Best New" winners are chosen on a basis of performance, value, safety, power, fuel efficiency, exterior design, interior room and cargo space... the buyer's guide cited the Impreza's standard All-Wheel Drive and safety features, as well as strong resale value and "impressive" cargo room. How do you fit two camels into a Subaru? This is not the beginning of a joke, although a Bedouin resident of the Negev managed to complete the inconceivable feat when he stuffed two camels into his car in order to transport them to the West Bank.

The camels' reality is a lot less funny than the punch line of a joke starting with that same question is meant to be. They are being brought to the West Bank for slaughter, after which their meat will be sold for consumption.

Subaru is a bit of an anomaly in the automotive industry. For one thing, Fuji Heavy Industries also manufactures aircraft, wind turbines, weed whackers, industrial engines among other things. Snowmobile and ATV giant Polaris uses Fuji engines, and Boeing is supplied by Fuji with 777 and 787 jumbo jet wing and fuselage bits and pieces...
As for Subaru products, no one else - other than Porsche - uses a horizontally opposed (boxer) engine and, with the exception of Audi, Subaru is the only company that fits all-wheel drive to each of its models.
Subaru also has a habit of quietly utilizing engineering that is both unconventional and useful...
How about Subaru's “hill-holder”, now called 'incline assist' in the manual transmission Forester and Impreza? This is an excellent for drivers who have trouble getting under way while stopped on a hill. True, the hill-holder idea was patented by Studebaker way back in the 1930s...
The latest engineering goody by Subaru is its Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle system. Found in Legacy and Outbacks (also Forester), PZEV reduces tailpipe emissions through the use of a super efficient charcoal air filtration system, redesigned fuel injectors, a reprogrammed Electronic Control Model, and a beefed-up catalytic converter. Slightly advanced ignition also promptly heats up the catalytic converter, further reducing the amount of unburned gases escaping through the system during cold starts.
You could probably argue all this is as much fine-tuning as it is new technology. But either way, the results, says Subaru, give PZEV models almost a 90% cleaner exhaust than most new gasoline-fuelled vehicles and are just a whisker away from a zero-emissions rating.

PZEV emissions and the return of science over politics - President Obama starts the process to overturn the Bush December 2007 EPA decision preventing states from having regulations stricter than Federal. There are 17 states using the cleaner burning PZEV (aka California spec) standards. The states are California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Florida, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massacusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania. Subaru has been shipping PZEV cars to states requiring them.

Says the President .. " The federal government must work with, not against, states to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.. the days of Washington dragging its heels are over. My administration will not deny facts; we will be guided by them."

I love chatting with customers when they visit and thanks to everyone who takes the time to say hi! Roxanne stopped by today and I commented on a necklace which it turns out she purchased after summiting Mt Kilimanjaro this spring! I had no idea she was so into mountaineering. She has a goal of summiting 5 of the 7 summits in her lifetime. she's off to Russia later this year to do Mt Elbrus.

Can't wait to hear about that adventure!

At the end of an eight-day climb, Roxanne Lashley felt on top of the world – and she was at nearly 20,000 feet high.
“Beautiful, oh, beautiful,” said Lashley of Holbrook, about her view from the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. “It was everything I hoped for and more.”
A few weeks ago, Lashley realized a dream that began in 2002 while she was setting up lighting for a Museum of Science exhibit that accompanied an IMAX film about climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Looking at all the photographs, Lashley decided she wanted to go to the continent of her ancestors and stand at its highest point. Last summer, the urge intensified.
“I was about to turn 51 and I knew I had to do this before my body quit on me,” said Lashley, who came to the United States at age 27 in 1983 from Guyana, South America, and is an exhibit maintenance specialist at the Museum of Science.
Trim and fit, Lashley seems to have boundless energy. A cyclist and former soccer player and referee, she works a second job in security at the Renaissance Marriott in Boston. To train for the trip, she would run up five flights of stairs and climb another 17 flights during her break. She also worked with a personal trainer once a week.
The build-up to the 55-mile trek was emotional. As she described her plan to carry the Holbrook town seal to the mountaintop, she unexpectedly became teary, held her face in her hands and wiped her eyes.
“Oh, boy, this is kind of hard,” said Lashley, who moved to Holbrook 17 years ago and lives with her mother and children, ages 21 and 20. “I can’t believe I got so emotional. Holbrook has been so good to us. When there are so many hard things in the world and people embrace you like they have, you get all choked up.” Describing her climb on her return home, Lashley recalled her excitement and relief the night before the final ascent, when she was just hours away from her goal after trekking through six climate zones.
“Deep inside, I knew I was going to make it. I had told my daughter that the spirit of my African ancestors would take me up, and I believed it,” Lashley said. “And I knew that my family and friends were depending on me. There are so many African-Americans who would love to go to the roof of Africa, but can’t make it. I said to myself, ‘You have to do this.’”
During the first three days, her muscles ached terribly; on another occasion she had breathing difficulties at night. But she was spared the altitude sickness, headaches and diarrhea suffered by some of the other 10 trekkers, who ranged from 23 to 61 years old and lived in California, Texas, Florida, New Jersey and Canada.
“I think all of us had some kind of pain, but it wasn’t too bad,” said Lashley, whose trip was organized by Thomson Safaris of Watertown.
The hikers gave each other lots of support at meals, eaten at a long table inside a tent and prepared by a team of porters, who also carried their gear.
“We came to know intimate details about everyone,” Lashley said. “If you were to grab each individual and say, ‘Tell me 10 things about Roxanne, they could rattle them off.” The toughest parts were climbing up an extremely steep section called Barranco Wall and coping with severe cold.
“It was straight up and I was so glad no one told me about it before, because I would have worried,” she said. “And the morning we started for the summit, I couldn’t feel my toes for the first hour.” Directly behind the guide, Lashley was the first in the group to reach the top. As she intended, she displayed the Holbrook town seal, as well as a flag of Guyana and the logo of the Museum of Science.
After a difficult, icy descent to the bottom, she received a completion certificate and learned she apparently was the first person from Guyana to summit.
“That was so exciting. I said, ‘You guys have been hanging out with someone who made history for her country,” Lashley said. “We were the kind of friends where you could say that. There was a lot of hugging and kissing.”
