Look carefully at one of Javier de Cea’s Works and you will not be indifferent. In his canvas, sculptures and installations there are hidden reflections of private and intimate stories taken from the streets of contemporary metropolis that, like Barcelona, have become an explosion of creativity of artists from all over the world.

Javier de Cea recreates these urban tracing mixing tags, stickers, posters, stencils and other marks that leave their personal witness on the street walls and finally find in the works of this artist a new harmonic rhythm absolutely astonishing. The point is not what they say or whether they are copied, real, or repeat each other. They are interesting because they reflect urban art, a reality created for and from the city.

The incredible power of De Cea’s canvases is not only in their images but rather in his creation process. The artist intervenes and alters his works as if he was reproducing in them the process of creation of ephemeral art that takes places in the cities. Thick brushes, spray, stickers, adhesive tape, layers of oil paint, acrylic paint and markers succeed each other, cancel and erase each other until they get to the perfect point of harmony between visual impact, dynamism, spontaneity, and urban witnessing.

"Painting isn’t just a living for me; it’s also the way in which I am able to express some hidden, nasty feelings about being hit by an airplane when I was eight years old in Nebraska. Yup, I got tackled by a landing propelled airplane whilst playing on a grassy runway one beautiful summer evening. It/the plane severed my left arm, my dominant hand. It sucked, but my experiences with “it” has turned me into the fired-up prolific painter that I am today.

I live and paint amongst the epicenter of political nausea that is Washington, D.C. My place is a 600 sq. ft. functional playground of eat/sleep/shit/paint. Each day I get, commute 3 feet to an unfinished canvas, and wallow the day away- pushing bright colors around until they tell a compelling story. Guim Tió is a young artist from Barcelona. His research interest in pictorial part of the human condition, treated with humor, irony and a strong degree of provocation, and reflects on a society full of taboos and subjected to a very visual tyranny of television, advertising and, of course, of fashion magazines. With the model representations and contemporary references in behavior and appearance, beauty and glamor, extracted from the coated paper for magazines, Guim makes a pictorial oper”a(c)tion” through brilliantly combined with the photographic medium - to "eye surgery": a metaphor for the physical manipulation of plastic surgery, genetics and cybernetics, revealing that dark part of the human soul hided behind the pretense of perfection. The artist stages a controversial issue for contemporary society and his work becomes an exploration of the collective unconscious, which governs the aesthetic valences on all types of human monstrosities in the sign of narcissistic beauty emulation as the key to success; a parody of stereotypes that today govern the new conceptions of the meaning "human being". AN INTERVIEW WITH THE ARTIST | GUIM TIO ZARRALUKI (original text in TTT-Time of The Thieves).

TTT. What’s your name?

G.T.Z. Guim Tió Zarraluki

TTT. Where were you born and where do you live?

G.T.Z. I was born in Barcelona and live there.

TTT. What is your profession?

G.T.Z. I’m a teacher and a painter.

TTT. When did you start working with illustration and why?

G.T.Z. I guess it has been little by little because I like it so I dedicate time to it, I‘ve always been doing some drawing.

TTT. What are your favorite artists or which artists have influenced your work?

G.T.Z. I like Basquiat a lot, but I see myself mostly influenced by contemporary artists with the same or similar concerns than mine; like Conrad Roset, Bel Fullana, Irene Bou, Cristian Blanxer or illustrations of Maria Diamantes, Amaia Arrazola or Chamo San.

TTT. What are the elements that inspire you in your work?

G.T.Z. For my current project I’m working with the fashion world and the concept of beauty, so the main elements of my works are fashion magazines.

TTT. Can you tell us what you’re looking to convey with your work?

G.T.Z. In this project, Magazine, I review the concept of beauty and the visual manipulation that’s made of it.

TTT. Have you ever exhibited and if you have, where has it been?

G.T.Z. I held an exhibition at the Sala Parés in Barcelona and I’m currently working with the GaleriaArtevistas also in Barcelona.

TTT. What are you reading now?

G.T.Z. Matadero cinco by Kurt Vonnegut.

TTT. What is your favorite place?

G.T.Z. The bed?

TTT. Can you tell us in what circumstances you made this paint?

G.T.Z. I started in my studio and I remember at the very end, when I was in home and thought I had finished it, I did the dark part of the hair and improved greatly.

TTT. If you could associate this image with a song, which would it be?

G.T.Z. Let everyone imagine one, for me Radiohead’s Creep fits.

"An interview with the artist"
Can you tell the readers a little bit about yourself, name, what country you live in, age etc?Hello, my name Guim, I am 23 years and I'm from Barcelona. I love ice cream.

-What inspired you to start being creative?I think we are all creative, in fact human beings are by nature creative.

I guess my inspiration to start painting were my grandparents, two painters and very good! They have a strong influence on my work ..

-Is making art your fulltime job, and if not, what else do you do? Right now I am a high school teacher in an institute of Barcelona, is a bit difficult to live of the art you do, but I try ... The truth is that with the Internet, the world will open,for example I just created my humble shop; take the opportunity to do some publicity ..

-Have you gone to art school, if yes where did you go and what did you study?I studied at the University of Arts in Barcelona, I majored in painting. Now I would like to study in another country, I think travel and seeing the world is essential for learning.

-Where do you find inspiration?In this latest project entitled Magazine, there is a clear influence of fashion and the concept of beauty. In my studio I have lots of fashion magazines that I work with to do my work, the beauty that deforms sold there and so I think ..

-Do you have a favorite artist and if so who and why?I like many artists, including Basquiat classic, Kupka, Bacon .. But the truth is I feel much more identified with the artists of today, are much closer to my concerns aboutits historical context and have similar concerns to mine in how contemporary they are ..Some of them are Conrad Roset, Irene Bou, Andrew Hem, Jennifer Davis, EdwardKinsella, ... the list could be endless nowadays there are very talented.

Where can my readers see you`re work?

An interview with the artists by Scott de Buitleir.

Individually, did you have a background in art in the family? Or maybe at school/college?

Adrian: According to my mother, my granddad used to sketch a lot. I think that’s where I get it from. Unfortunately, none of his work was kept after he died. I never did my homework in primary school, so I wasn’t allowed to do art. On Fridays, when all the other kids got to do art, I had to sit in the corner and do the homework I hadn’t done during the week.

Shane: My Dad was always sketching and made some sculptures from wood and making furniture. So it had an influence, I’m sure, on my sister who works in film as a production designer, and me in art and design; I also went to the Glasgow School of Art to study architecture.

When did you first meet?

A: We grew up in the same town and went to the same schools. We knew each other’s faces, but never properly met until we were introduced by mutual friends on a dance floor at Christmas 1997.

What are the differences in style between the two of you, and how do you compromise?

A: We’ve had over twelve years to learn how to compromise. It’s not really a problem.

S: We have the same taste in art and graphics but different ways in expressing ourselves, I’m more graphic and Adrian can be more about a subject or images but its that combination that makes an Adrian + Shane piece.

What was the first exhibition you put on?

A: Our first exhibition was titled ‘Sensation By Deprivation’. It ran for a month during the summer of 1999 at the Droichead Arts Centre, Drogheda, County Louth.

S: … The art had nothing to do with the title! We had so much in the show; maybe about 50 pieces from sculpture and paintings and projection, and we still didn’t think we had enough! We actually had enough for two shows.

How has your style of art changed or evolved since you first started working together?

A: Our style changes constantly, because we like to work with different mediums. Our early work was very rough, mostly made up of collage and acrylics on paper. In recent years, however, we’ve become more known for our brightly coloured stencil work on canvas. We have also used photography and video in our more recent work.

S: We have experimented with different mediums, different techniques, ranging from projections, stencil art, painting, photography to prints on cushions that were exhibited in shop windows, anything that interests us.

Have you gained international attention at all?

A: Yes – our work has been bought by art collectors in New York, London, Tokyo, Sydney to name a few. And we recently heard that one of our artworks is hanging in a posh bar in Ibiza! We also just did an interview with a fashion/art magazine from South Korea.

As a couple, is it hard to work together as well as doing everything else by each other’s side?

A: No. We love each other. Enjoy each other’s company. And we know when to give each other space.

S: No, I like it…

Do you think there’s a particular style of Irish modern art, or are Irish artists just part of a British/European/World movement?

A: No. Not that I’m aware of. I don’t think there is. I don’t think our art has much to do with Ireland. We’re inspired by films, music and other artists.

S: I think Irish art can be very serious and issue based, which isn’t a bad thing… We are very serious about the art that we make, although our pieces aren’t always serious.
