The Hostess
(A Work In Progress Excerpt)

A bewildered grin flickered across her face as she moved swiftly into the dining room to join the main party of guests, who were now attacking the buffet table with fervour. As the hostess of this New Year’s Eve soiree, her absence had been hardly inconspicuous; she noted a few raised eye-brows and halted conversations as she entered the room. She managed to force a smile while endeavouring to make light of the conflicting emotions battling for supremacy in her head. In one sense she felt smug, enjoying the obvious effect ‘their moment’ had inflicted upon him. This wasn't unusual; she possessed a naturally flirtatious personality, and revelled in the way a few well-chosen words or a sensual gaze could leave a man hungry for more. But this was different. She had experienced a chemistry so real, so unexpected, that she was now the one hungry. This stranger, walking a few steps behind her, had stirred previously untapped emotions, and as a consequence she found herself in a state of confusion and frustration.

Scolding herself for allowing these feelings to dominate her thoughts, she sauntered over to her husband and felt his arm protectively fall about her shoulders. She slipped one arm around his waist and held him tight, deliberately catching the eye of her protagonist. How dare this stranger make her feel this way? A stranger who commanded her body and captivated her mind; a stranger who both baffled and inspired her, not through conversation alone, but through his eyes, his movement, and his simple touch too. A man who made her tingle with excitement, had penetrated her tough exterior, destroying the protective walls as though they were made of paper. A man who had reached out and touched her naked soul.

The evening continued in a whirl of canapés and background music. Guests mingled freely, and as the alcohol flowed, the atmosphere became more raucous. She chatted with friends, but would intermittently steal a glance in his direction, and their eyes would lock once again. They studied each other intently as though trying to determine their next move. Midnight duly arrived to the jubilant cries of ‘Happy New Year!’ The annual ritual of hugging and kissing friends, as well as complete strangers, began in earnest as every permutation in the room wished each other all the best for the coming year. She looked on as he prised Jonathan from his latest girlfriend and gave him an almighty bear hug. How long had they been friends, she pondered? In all the years she’d known Jonathan, he’d never spoken of this man.

The room was alive to the sound of celebration; party poppers and streamers, the popping of champagne corks, and drunken choruses of Auld Lang Syne, many of which sadly out of tune. Fireworks exploded from the gardens of neighbouring houses, and several guests made their way onto the terrace to watch the night time spectacle. She sipped her champagne and congratulated herself on a successful evening, while half-listening to friends discuss their New Year’s resolutions. It was then that she noticed him, tentatively shuffling towards her; with each step the music and guests disappeared in a haze, until he stood before her. He raised his glass, and she reciprocated; a faint chink of crystal that only they heard.

“Happy New Year,” he whispered. His voice was warm and inviting, and drew her closer.

“May all our dreams come true,” she replied, realising she had spoken before considering her words. She was once more lost in another world, where time stood still and events were of no consequence.

A thunderous explosion suddenly lit up the night sky through the French windows, bringing her to her senses. The last of the guests in the room made their way hurriedly out onto the terrace. He smiled at her. They both knew there was little more to be said. Instinctively, they turned to join the others.

The party continued long after the neighbouring pyrotechnics had fizzled out. Drinks continued to flow, and lively dance music now pulsed loudly throughout the house, providing it with a heartbeat. She cavorted with friends, doing her best to avoid him, conscious that her large intake of alcohol could easily lead her into trouble. He seemed equally occupied with Jonathan, who was beginning to look worse for wear. She pitied his new girlfriend; she doubted she’d be seeing any more fireworks tonight.

Once the New Year had been officially seen in, revellers began slowly departing, and by three in the morning, festivities were on the wane. The last remaining guests were assembled in the large hallway, gathering their coats.

“It was a pleasure to make your acquaintance.” His words were deliberately brief and somewhat hesitant, while awaiting her response.

“Thank you for coming,” was all she could muster, desperately trying to conjure a witty remark, berating herself when her confused mind refused to co-operate.

He took her hand, lifted it slowly towards his mouth and planted a soft kiss upon it, unaware of the effect such an action stirred within her. She felt light-headed, the combination of chemistry and alcohol mixing well. She found herself wishing the moment would last forever. He read her mind while gazing into her eyes, then reluctantly let her hand fall to her side as he nodded in the direction of her husband, who was making his way towards them.

She watched as he took her husband’s hand and shook it firmly, made his farewell and headed for the front door, supporting a rather inebriated Jonathan, much to the relief of his girlfriend. Within seconds he was gone, along with the remainder of the guests, who had now spilled out into the early New Year’s Day morning to the sound of a mixture of stifled giggles and hushed conversations.

A Few Facts About A S Wilkins (aka Charming Man)

Music is my passion, I love to play drums, in several bands and I love The Smiths, Morrissey, The Cure and Echobelly, to name a few. I can often be heard drumming at my desk when I’m supposed to be hard at it, working on my latest project; I also tap away incessantly to music on the steering wheel of my car too!

I love comedy and wish it was something I could’ve broken into in a professional capacity when I was younger. I’m inspired by the likes of Woody Allen and the Monty Python team. I often make my kids laugh with my silly sense of humour. I have a habit of creating my own characters and voices, and act them out while I’m in the kitchen; my children fall about with laughter, although I often question if they’re laughing with me or at me.

I have a passion for red wine, cheese and Danish television dramas. I love to combine all three of an evening after a hard day at my desk, although my children often place bets as to how long I’ll stay awake once I’ve sat down; it’s tiring work being creative all day!

I’m a die-hard West Ham United supporter.

From a purely physical perspective, Keira Knightley is my ideal woman, and I hope one day to bump into her at a West Ham game.

I’ve lived in many different places around the world including Denmark, France, Italy and Belgium to name a few. I still have a house in rural France, and I hope to one day retire there and see out my days writing in the tranquillity of the scenic French countryside.

It was often said I bear a resemblance to the actor Christopher Lambert. I may have done once, but I think we’ve both moved on in recent years.

I’m not a huge fan of cooking, but I’ve been told I possess exemplary baking skills. Apparently banana cake and Baileys (Irish cream) cheesecake are my forte!

As a young boy, I had a huge crush on Hayley Mills, but who didn’t?

Excerpt from “Dark Visions”

Excerpt: Mark was gone from Carrie’s bed when she awoke. In his place lay a

hand-written love note decorated with flowers and hearts. “Mark, you’re quite the artist,” she said to the note with a deep satisfied smile. Checking the clock she found she had less than thirty minutes to shower, dress and get to church…and be there on time. Anyone arriving late had to sit in back of the church, and Carrie was expected to sit with her mother.

She made it to the church with one minute to spare and dutifully kissing

her mother’s cheek, sat with her in the fourth row. “I didn’t think you’d make

it,” whispered Myra, noticing her daughter’s glowing appearance as did others, as evidenced by smiles and wiggling eyebrows. “So, when’s the wedding?”

Carrie stopped her last minute primping and whispered. “Does it show?”

“You got ‘I had sex last night’ written all over your pretty face.”

“He’s the one, Mother. I know it.”

“That’s what I said when I met your daddy…and we know how that

ended.”

“Father was morally and emotionally weak. Mark is not.”

“I may not know everything about men, but one thing I do know is this, ‘If

a man can get the milk for free, why buy the cow?’”

“That’s a horrible presumption to make about Mark.”

“So…when’s the wedding?”

Carrie started to answer, but the organist’s Prelude interrupted. Angry with

her mom and her attitude toward men in general and Mark in particular, she

made a quick exit. Once outside the church, she raced sobbing to her car and

peeled out of the parking lot. She immediately called Mark.

Hello and welcome to JoAnne's Blog and this weeks Paranormal Love Wednesday Blog Hop. Today I'm sharing an excerpt from a short story, “The Truth Behind the Lies", one tale from my paranormal anthology, “Wicked Intentions”.

Blurb: Solving the brutal murder of American born Ruthie Geil becomes a gauntlet of attacks and more murders for Federal Police Inspector Ian Christian. Between the victims family, ex-lovers, and ghostly occurrences on Norfolk Island, the killer is closer than anyone realizes.

Excerpt: As I approached my car, the light of the moon warned me of an approaching shadow. Just before getting clobbered from behind, I ducked the tree branch that swung at me and came up with a right cross. My foe fell backwards onto a section of landscaping, ripping up a galley of tropical flowers. At that moment, I got a whiff of familiar aftershave and immediately recognized the scent belonging to Bobby Fee. I approached the jerk that now lay on the ground and said, “You’re no match for me.”

He humbly nodded in agreement. Believing him remorseful for the attempted throw down, I offered him a hand up. He graciously accepted, only to con me again by blinding me with a scoop of sand hidden in his free hand. He then grabbed me around my waist and slammed me to the ground, knocking the wind out of me momentarily. He got in a few good punches before I rebounded with savage fury. I got him into a headlock and with my free hand pounded bumps into his skull until he begged for mercy.

“I give up! I give up!” he wailed. I released his limp sweaty body, and he slumped to the ground.

“I’m not one of your defenseless female victims,” I shouted. “I should wipe up the ground with you.”

Suddenly a chilly wind brushed over us. “Kill him!” whispered a feminine voice from behind. “Kill him!”

I whirled around to investigate, but there was no one in sight. Was my imagination or the terrestrial night playing tricks on me? Did I really hear a voice, or was it just the mystical wind of the South Seas?

THE PROPOSITION

Excerpt: The men left me staring at my proposition like a kid at Christmas. What was it about this scarlet-haired wench that provoked such infatuation in young men, but anger and frustration in the elders? I had exactly ten months to discover the secret. I had never felt this way about any woman before. Yes, I had girlfriends in Texas, but they were friends. This feeling I felt was new, strange, and exhilarating. I wished to taste her fire and brushed back sweat beads.

Continuing to watch carefully, I now studied each and every person. All the other women were dressed the same, in light blue dresses, their long hair hidden under white bonnets. The single men were clean-shaven like Henry, while the married men sported full beards like Thaddeus and Joshua.

Living in Texas I was used to cowboys, farmers and Indians, but had never met a Quaker. These peculiar people living in such a passive community were above my present understanding, but I hoped it would be revealed soon.

The ad was adamant in that the position would last only twelve months from acceptance, and I answered the ad two months ago. My time was clearly running out.

The residents of Rolling Hills, a hamlet in southeastern Ohio, were horrified when the dismembered bodies of two missing teens were pulled from the local river. Multiply suspects surfaced, but only one was railroaded, Richard Allan Lloyd, a known nudist and hothead.

What began as an evening stroll turned into what found only in horror films, and dubbed ‘the crime of the century’. 18 year old Babette, a voluptuous beauty contestant and horsewoman, and her 19 year old boyfriend Shane Shoemaker, a jealous and possessive unemployed printer, were last seen crossing a trestle bridge. Within fourteen days, their mutilated torsos and severed heads and limbs were unearthed, suggesting satanic cult activity.

With an investigation smeared with contradicting statements, and a botched crime scene, investigators built a flimsy case against Richard Lloyd. The three-week trial was based on police corruption and ineptitude, fairytale theories, and forensic mishandling.

This heinous crime shattered the sense of security for Rolling Hills, destroyed two families, and forever scarred the town. This story is a detailed account of finding justice for Babette and Shane, and of one man’s perseverance to gain his freedom from death row.

Excerpt: The next morning, Sandra woke with the belief her son was dead. She was now in a great panic. After checking in with Sandra, and realizing the kids had not returned or contacted her, Lt. Mowery took her written statement.

Sandra told the officer she rose at 7 a.m., on October 4, and noticed Annette waking up from the bedroom she shared with her daughter. She said Annette was preparing for classes at Tri-County Vocational School. Todd, she recalled, woke from his room and stayed home for the remainder of the morning after Annette left.

Chief Barron stayed within the city limits, checking area “hang outs” that Don had suggested. The officer reported finding no signs of the teens.

Lt. Mowery, armed with a new lead, drove to the nearby village of Nelsonville. First settled in 1814 by the Daniel Nelson family, the town was born from the coal industry and known as the “Little City of Black Diamonds.”

Once Lt. Mowery arrived at Tri-County, he discovered Annette had not attended any of her classes, after being reported missing.

What Instructor Dorothy Connors told the officer turned the investigation upside down and shed a new light on a seemingly non-alarming incident?

A petite redhead with green eyes, Dorothy was divorced with one grown daughter. She volunteered her free time at the local Pet Orphanage, a non-profit organization that placed abandoned or neglected dogs and cats within new homes.

She described Annette “a good student,” who at times had difficulties concentrating on her studies. Annette was determined to receive high grades, said Dorothy. She knew her smarts and her natural ability at mastering computer programming was her ticket out of Logan.

Todd on the other hand, seemed content in staying the “small-town” boy. His choir-boy manners was a hit with the ladies and especially with Sarah Johnson…in the beginning. Sarah would come to dislike Todd, as much as she disliked every boy Annette dated.

“I felt sorry for Annette and befriended her,” Dorothy told the officer.

Dorothy described three letters Annette sent her depicting sexual and mental abuse instigated by Dale Johnston. The letters talked of Annette wanting to run away, but she was afraid her stepfather would find her and punish her. Dale Johnston threatened each boyfriend Annette had, and forced Annette to accompany him, alone, on camping trips, where he regularly seduced her, then “rewarded her with money or new clothes.”

Annette wrote of Sarah being aware of the attacks, but refused to acknowledge them, or stop them, claiming Sarah cared only about her marriage. The allegations of sexual abuse would be debated at length. Some found the rumors empty, since Dale and Sarah had the reputation of being “energizer bunnies,” when it came to sex. Some felt why would Dale want other women, when Sarah was “ready and willing”? Others felt the rumors were true, automatically believing the young voluptuous Annette, due to her age, and being raised by the likes of Sarah and Dale.

According to Dorothy, she advised Annette to move out of her stepfather’s trailer, or report the attacks, but unfortunately, “My advice came too late,” she said.

Excerpt from “Is It Only A Myth?”

Quietly, Jim led the way into the large, damp, dark opening with Page watching their rear. The smell of ammonia issued strongly from the tunnel.

Using his night vision goggles, Jim saw a huge, black Mothman silhouetted against the far back wall. “It’s completely wrapped inside its wings,” Jim whispered.

“If it’s asleep, we better hit it now.”

Slowly they advanced toward the creature, hugging the side walls. “Ah! It’s sitting on its eggs. This may be our sole chance to prove the Mothman exists,” Page said. “Please let me keep one of the eggs.”

“We’ve been through this already, Page, and the answer is still no!”

“Listen, Jim,” she whispered. “I know a man who will pay a mighty high price for a live specimen. We can share the money since my team’s dead.”

Jim stopped and stared at the woman he had already fallen in love with, then asked, “You’re not really a scientist, are you?”

“Yes, I am, but I am not the type I once was.”

“So you lied about your credentials?” Jim began fuming.

“I . . .”

“Who the hell are you, really?”

“The others and I were more fortune hunters than true cryptozoologists.”

“You bitch! You never meant any of this avowed dedication, did you?”

“Shut up, Jim, you’ll wake-up the Mothman,” she said, aiming her dart gun at his face. “Now drop your weapons.”

He reluctantly obeyed. “You played me, just so I’d bring ya along, didn’t you?”

EXCERPT: The Arrest

On September 29, 1983, months of investigative work, combined with the public’s doubts, fears, and beliefs that Richard Lloyd was a killer, paid off. What most in the county hoped for, finally came true.

Jethro said Richard was unaware of the conversations between him and the authorities. Through conversations, he believed Richard would “pin” the murders on him, to escape arrest. He wanted the killer caught and “put out” of society, even if that person were a loved one. Still he was not totally convinced of Richard’s guilt, but that “gut feeling,” was still there.

Police said what came next as no surprise. It happened on a cool autumn afternoon, as citizens busied themselves with the upcoming fall and winter festivities. While leaf-covered streets overflowed with gleeful residents and out-of-towners, two silent cruisers, lights out, descended upon the Lloyd farm.

The Newsome County Grand Jury, after two days of testimony, and 56 witnesses, handed down an indictment against Richard Allen Lloyd. The stepfather was now a murder suspect, for two counts of aggravated murder with mitigating circumstances.

What the grand jury heard was all the evidence that pointed to Richard Lloyd being the killer. They did not hear the information that conflicted with the investigators theory of accounts. According to some witnesses, the state went to great lengths to ensure only the evidence against the accused was heard.

Detective Eli, with the eager assistance of Sheriff Reynolds, finally arrested Richard for the murder of the teenagers. However, that would prove not to be the end of the story . . . only the beginning.

Lash came down later, and paused in the doorway, studying me. After so much time apart from him, it was odd to feel him watching me again.

“What is it?” I asked, looking up at him from my sewing. “Were the fish okay? I wasn’t sure what kind you liked best, so I got trout⎯”

“They were good, Sar,” Lash said in a raspy voice. “Thanks for getting them for me. I had to change badly. It was a relief to be snake again.”

“How often do you need to change?” It was hard for me to believe I’d known him so long, and never asked him that. But how much did I know about him really? For all we’d talked, he’d rarely talked about himself. I knew a lot about his tastes in movies and books, but not too much else. Killer, assassin, weresnake, part Spanish, had once eaten people, was born back around 1900-something in Florida, had once — well, now twice — been in jail, worked construction in his youth, loved sex/good in bed, and liked to hide his emotions. That about summed it up. Oh, and seemed to still want to get in my pants, maybe.

“I like to do it every week or so,” Lash said, looking at me with interest. “I can’t do it too much more than that, because I can’t guard Dev as well as a snake as I can as human.”

I got up and went over to him, touching his arm gently. “Would you like me to make you something to eat? Eggs? Bacon? Pasta?”

Lash reached out for me in a deft movement, pulling me close and embracing me tightly.

“Lash⎯” I began hesitantly.

            “Shh,” he hissed. “Don’t talk. Let me hold you, and breathe in the scent of you, Sar.”

             I hugged him to me, going silent. He held me for about ten minutes, breathing deeply, his arms tight around me. But it wasn’t a sexual hug. It was a hug of recovering something that he’d been apart from for a long time that he cared for, something that had been lost but was now found.

Tara Fox Hall is an OSHA-certified safety and health inspector at a metal fabrication shop in upstate New York. She received her bachelor's degree in mathematics with a double minor in chemistry and biology from Binghamton University. Her writing credits include over twenty short stories published in the nature magazines Catnip Blossoms, Meanwhile, and On The River. Her short horror stories have appeared in Deadman's Tome, Flashes in the Dark, Halloween Alliance, and Ghastly Door. She also coauthored the essay "The Allure of the Serial Killer," published in Serial Killers - Philosophy for Everyone: Being and Killing (Wiley-Blackwell, 2010). She divides her free time unequally between writing novels and short stories, chainsawing firewood, caring for stray animals of all species, sewing cat and dog beds for donation to animal shelters, and target practice.
