The Day I Tortured Myself

A.K.A. the day I wore super high wedges to office.

I don't usually wear high heeled shoes. Because, 1 - I'm already tall. And people in the office are ... well, not so tall. So there's no need for me to emphasize that, yes?

But I saw these really nice Paprika polka dot wedges and I immediately fell in love... because I got it on sale for AED 35. That's like $10!!

Never mind that its 2 inches higher than my normal high heeled shoes. It's just too good to miss.

They're pretty much comfortable. But I had a hard time driving in them. Also, I'm not used to this kind of "high" that I kept wobbling.

As they say, practice makes perfect! Wearing these made me confident and instantly gorgeous. So confident that I submitted my application for cabin crew! HAHA!! Talk about being high.
On another note, the floor needs a good scrubbing. ack!!

The Sea and I

The sea and I? Lame title, huh? Sorry, my brain is not functioning properly.

Anyway, we had a very nice day out from office last week. We rented out a small yacht, sailed out to the sea and did a little bit of fishing.

The yacht is from Xclusive Yachts. (Click the link, they have nice photos of the yacht)

Overview:
Xclusive 4 is our entry level fly bridge yacht. Set over three levels, she is spacious and elegant with a stylish lounge, two comfortable en suite bedrooms and a large sunbathing deck. The saloon features a fully equipped galley with microwave, oven and fridge, cleverly blended into the same comfortable area, making a superb entertainment room with all round views to enjoy. The upper deck has a comfortable seating area and viewing platform.

I do not have claustrophobia but when I went below deck, I immediately felt dizzy. I was sweating profusely and I needed air ... badly! So I just went back up and enjoyed the breeze.

The cabins were really tight. I don't even remember how I managed to use the toilet. I never knew I could be so ...bendy. We stopped somewhere to do our fishing business. Everyone got their rods and waited.

Fish. They caught one. I didn't. :(

Then we saw this island. The captain, whom we fondly called Captain Jack (mainly because I can't remember his name ... he's got this really nice exotic Kenyan name), told me that this is an island owned by the Sheikh.

A private island! With your own ship!!

Ahhhhh... the good life.
We ended the trip with a short swim and a very hearty lunch. I wish we had done this when the weather was still good.

I wanted to be a Mermaid

If you know me personally, you would have already known that when I was a kid, I wanted to be a mermaid. Yes, a mermaid. The movie Splash is my favorite thing to watch and I would eat a lot of fish (especially the tails) in the hopes of me growing a very nice mermaid tail. Funny ... I still sometimes wish I'm a mermaid. LOL!
A few weeks ago, I was invited to an after party hosted by Millennium Airport Hotel for the Arab Travel Market 2013. Who would decline food, music and friends?

Something Different on the Blog

Hey there friends!
Have you noticed something different? No? Oh well. I did make some changes over the weekend.
First, the header is now : "shoutingwind's corner"
What's different? It used to be just "shoutingwind". I find it too ... short? I felt it needed something else, just to make a point. So there. Changed.

I also removed a couple of ads. (Mostly adsense and text links). This is to make sure that my proper ads get the right attention and focus! (Interested in placing an ad? Shoot me an email!)
Just a couple of updates on the blog. I'm still stingy and decided to make use of the free template. Hehehe

Color Comb

You won't believe the amount of white hair I have acquired in the past years. I still remember that day, not so long ago, when I was about to turn 30. I was inspecting my face closely in the mirror (I am vain, yes I admit) Very little lines on my face, no significant discoloration, a little dry but nothing a good moisturizer can fix.
Then I made the mistake of running my fingers through my hair. Oh the HORROR!! On the right side of my head, behind my right ear... there it was -- a streak of silver (not white!!). I was mortified. My legs suddenly felt weak but I had to check thoroughly! I realized that tears were in my eyes as I lift section per section of hair ... checking every strand (well, not every strand coz that would be stupid and impossible!)
Apparently the whites are hidden, if that's any consolation. Since then I have been coloring my hair. DIY of course. Because as much as I am vain, I am very stingy! LOL!
Over the years, the silver/grey strands has been getting bolder and bolder. They started out hiding underneath but now... they are proudly showing off! Even the baby hair on my hairline is white! I even have white hair on my eyebrows!! (gasp!!)
Because there's a curious toddler who's following me everywhere, I can't do my regular hair color. It has been way overdue and the whites are showing. While buying groceries I spotted this:

Actually I've seen this before but I did not need it then and I was not sure it's effective.

Directions for use below:

My verdict:
I bought the dark brown version since I have fiery red hair from my last DIY dye. (Black streaks would probably look weird on red?) I followed the instructions and yes, it did cover the whites (gray) but not as dark. It looks like blonde/light brown streaks. Better than nothing, right?
However, I do not like that it makes my hair sticky. Coz literally it looks like clay on a comb. And try putting clay on your hair... sticky, yes? So don't expect you'd have the same soft, flowing hair like on the package.

Accident

Saturday started just like any other day. "A" (aka the hubs) decided to drop me to work and get the car a/c fixed after.

On our way down the Al Khan bridge in Sharjah, we were hit by this ~~idiot~~ truck. We were on the right most lane while the stupid truck was on the left. He suddenly decided that he needed to exit the road going to Dubai - Sharjah road. This means he needs to cut in front of us or else he'll miss his exit.

And that's exactly what the ~~moron~~ other driver did. Turned right so quick that he would have hit the midsection of our car if A did not move fast enough. Luckily, A is very sharp when driving. He accelerated and then BAM!

"A" inspected the damage and asked the driver: "you did not see me??". ~~Idiot~~ Driver : No.

The impact is not that hard. Actually the damage is just paint transfer for us. The truck's headlight is damaged though. We parked the car, called the police and filed the report. Next, we'll have to go to the insurance company, have the damage estimated and then have the car fixed. So much hassle just because this guy decided that he will make the turn last minute.

Ok, maybe he genuinely did not see us and that he did a desperate move. What's annoying is that when the police came, he insisted that it was OUR fault for not letting him through! He made a signal already and yet we did not let him through. WHAT?!

Take note that this guy was happy to settle and give us 200 bucks for the damages, just don't call the police. Well, I'm not comfortable that he can get away with his stupid move. I insisted that we call the police. Never mind that we have to go through the hassle. It's his fault so he should be penalized for that.

Right?

I'm just glad that Blakey was not with us that time otherwise I'll be biting his head off!

Mysterious Case of Unsleep

I can now say that I have solved the mysterious case of unsleep. (yeah, technically, that's a word...) For the past 3 days, I have been waking up at different times, ungodly hours! Between 2 am to 6 am. Even during the weekend!

The culprit:

I'm guessing the medications I've been taking. For my bones, arms, cartilage.... whatever is wrong with my body. They're mostly supplements but taking 5 pills seems a bit too much. And then the waking up in the middle of the night... not cool!

I experimented and took 1 out of the game. Voila! I was able to sleep through the night (well, not really. I still have to breast feed the toddler. But I can do that half sleeping, never mind that I've been poking her nose or ears. She has to adjust ... no pain, no gain, right?!)

Today, I fell off the wagon

Not literally, of course.

But I did fall off my grandpa's wagon in the Philippines when I was little. You know, those things that Carabaos pull. We were on vacation then ... but that's not what I wanted to share today.

I'm rambling!

As you know, "Be Healthy" is one of my goals this year. (It has been my goal for a long time!!)

Since January, I gained 2 kgs. GAINED! The goal is to lose, idiot.

Lately I have been feeling depressed. Heavy, ugly and depressed. I'm always tired and having frequent headaches. Not good. Not good at all!

Then last month, I decided to see an orthopedic doctor to get my arms checked. Been feeling pain on both my shoulders (on top of the constant dull back pain which I have been tolerating). I was told that there's inflammation on my joints and that I have to quit lifting heavy things. [This made me really sad because it means I will have to quit carrying the little one. =( ]

I was advised to go 10 sessions of physiotherapy/chiropractic adjustments which I happily obliged. I love spine adjustments and massages! he he he. I was cleared to do some light exercise last week.

So here is the actual update:

I have been exercising and watching what I eat for the past week. I have been sore for the past few days! And today... I fell of the wagon. Instead of the usual oats with soy milk, I added peanut butter and jelly for break fast! And no exercise!!

What made me over eat? Lack of sleep. I tried to sleep early last night and yet I woke up at 3 am. I couldn't go back to sleep till 6! I know I shouldn't have eaten extra and I should have powered through the exercise. No buts. It was my mistake. Something that I will have to make up for tomorrow.

Realization:

It's so much better to start the day with exercise! I felt more energized yesterday when I did my "routine". But today? I felt cold after the shower and I want to close my eyes and go back to bed. Like, right now!

I wonder what made me "un-sleep" last night? hmmm

Tomorrow is another day.

Desert Rain

It does rain in the desert. And honestly speaking, I have mixed feelings about rain in Dubai. I've been here for almost 11 years now and I can say that I've experienced ~~weird~~ sudden change of climate. One moment you're enjoying the cold, then extreme heat the next day.

Yesterday was no different. It rained yesterday (and it has been forecasted that weather will be unstable for a couple of days).

Normally, I enjoy the rain. It makes me feel "like" home. I like the "smell" of rain. It also brings back memories of me having a nice hot bowl of lugaw (congee) or chicken sopas at home.

Who doesn't like hiding under the warm covers and just spend the day in bed?

And because there's only two types of weather in Dubai -- Hot and Hotter!, we try to enjoy the rain as much as we can. But then, when there's rain, usually there's traffic jams and flooding. After all these years, nothing much has changed in terms of drainage and sewage systems.
Also, rains usually means that we are transitioning to the hotter months. I'm so not looking forward. :/

Beauty Sketches

I could be a little late in posting this because this video has been showing up on my facebook timeline for a while now. I really didn't pay any attention to it. I mean it's Dove. I get that they empower women and that its a great product. Heck, I use Dove. (I just discovered Dove Beauty soap in cocoa butter ... uh huh!)

On to the video. Out of ~~boredom~~ curiosity, I clicked on the link and watched. What I didn't expect is that I'd be moved by the whole thing! *tears*

It's amazing how we see ourselves, eh? We put so much attention to things that don't really matter. I kept saying that this is so true!

Checking out the comments and interactions about this commercial (is this a commercial? an ad for Dove?), some people have other things to say. They were even arguing! For me, this made me realize that I should not focus on trivial things like my freckles or that fine lines are showing already... this is normal!

But while women are overly critical of themselves, look at how men see themselves!

Honestly, I wasn't interested to go but getting free tickets? Then the "bitter half" said he wants to watch... hey, I would not pass that up!

I'm glad I went. The concert was ~~epic~~ pure concentrated awesomness!
We arrived around quarter to eight. The concert grounds was already packed so we picked out our spot and rooted ourselves there till Bruno Mars went up the stage and showered everyone with a whole lot of awesome. I was live tweeting while everything was happening (but I couldn't keep up, my service provider kept crashing on me! booo!!) But I swear, I have never been so excited seeing a guy sway and bump his hips the way Bruno Mars did. He was such a tease!! Anyway, we were far from the stage and the lights were blinding so I couldn't take proper photos. But that's ok. I was able to enjoy the music this way.

My Day at MEFCC

Like I mentioned in my previous post, we went to MEFCC (Middle East Film and Comic Con or just Comic Con to make thing easier! hehehe) This was not planned at all. Underarms and Lemon

You remember when people tell you that lemon (or kalamansi) can make your underarms whiter? yeah, they said that its very effective. And to be honest I've done that so many times (but the result? I dunno. looks the same to me.)

Yesterday was different though. I was already in the middle of my shower when I remembered that I got half a lemon sitting in my fridge. So I thought, why not?! It's only half a lemon. Better put it to good use than let it spoil.

So, dripping and soap suds all over, I ran to the kitchen. Opened the fridge. Took the lemon. Went back to the bath. Turned on the shower. and then quickly rubbed the lemon on my armpits.

What I didn't know was that the half lemon was covered with spilled achuete powder....

Eraserheads in Dubai

Last weekend was so epic that I had to delay blogging because I needed to sleep. HA! First we went to watch a very successful concert by one of the BEST Filipino bands, Eraserheads. Then the next day, we went to ComicCon! But let's talk about the concert first. I have to disclose that the previous concerts I attended were complimentary tickets. (I am lucky to be in a company that gets invited to concerts... heheh) But when I found out that Eraserheads will be in Dubai and that I won't be getting complimentary tickets, I said F' it. I'm buying! (that says a lot because I do not like spending for "non important" stuff) So with tickets in hand, we lined up outside the Dubai Media City Ampitheater and waited for the band.

You see, their music was the anthem of my youth. It brings back tons of memories... fun times!

We waited. and waited.

... and waited some more. Then on the big screen, the countdown begins. 15:00 minutes. Woohoo!! crowd goes wild. Then after 15 minutes, the counter resets! Boo!! Another 15 minutes. :/

But this time they did come on stage after the countdown. Crowd was WILD!!

After a few songs, people from the gold standing area (where we were) were let in the platinum area which was just a few feet away from the stage. Hey, they let us in. (Hope those who paid for the expensive area didn't mind.)

If you were there, I was the big, crazy, fist pumping, water bottle shaking, jiggling and bouncing person near the front.

Another great thing about this concert is that we were able to hang out with our cousins. YAY!!

In between songs, we would take photos. You do realize that we're posers... we don't even know the proper "rock on" hand gesture, yes?

When the band started singing Huling El Bimbo, I was having goosebumps. I love that song. (I even use that to put my baby to sleep.. haha!) Then lights out. They left. But the crowd didn't. We kept shouting for "more more!!" And they came back with 3 more songs! Pare Ko,Toyang, and Alapaap. Then they took a bow ... we were so near that I could almost touch them. (but not quite... that's ok though.) Seeing them perform live is more than enough. (yes, I have not seen them perform .. ever. But I'm a fan, I swear!!) I can't believe I missed my blogversary date ... AGAIN! Time really flies. My blog is now 3 years old. Wooo hooo!! On this day, 3 years ago, I blogged about one of my first OPI polishes - Curry Up, Don't be Late!
A year after that, exactly one year after I created this blog, I wore You Don't Know Jacques - Matte to celebrate my blogversary. This is the only year that I remembered my blog birthday!!

And then last year, I shared my stats at two years old.
Now here we are, three years. 337 posts and counting (338 if you include this one!)

Dubai Women's Run 2013

Registration is now open for the 4th Annual Dubai Women's Run - 2013. Race will be on 8 November 2013 at 7 am - Meydan Hotel.

Of course I'll be there. ~~Even if I have to walk most of the way.~~ I have enough time to train and hopefully I would be fit enough to run by then. Time to get physical!

This time last year, I took a break from work and splurged on myself. I had my nails done, my eyebrows trimmed and my legs waxed. Then I cooked for the family. Can't remember if I had people over... hmmm. Anyway, that was last year. This year, I decided to have a really nice brunch with the family and relax by the pool.

Vacation International

A.K.A. the night I almost got scammed.
Or "I-can't-believe-I-almost-fell-for-this!"
What started out as a nice family dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe in DFC, ended up in giving my contact details to a scammer. We were on our way to Hyper Panda when this guy at a kiosk started waving to the Little One then engaged us in a little game.
He dared us to name 5 arab countries ending in the letter "n". For some reason I started answering! HA! (I only got 3 though and with a little help too!) Then this guy said because we were good sports, he will give us a nice gift.
"How about a free trip to Maldives? Or Malaysia?"
Then he started explaining that they are a tourism company called Vacation International and he's from (somewhere. I can't remember coz my brain was stuck at "free trip" and "Maldives".) He showed us valid identification and he seems legit...he's got a kiosk in the mall, right?
"So what's the catch? Why are you giving away free vacation?"
"No catch. This is a promotion. I only have 10 invites and these are the last two. You seem to be a nice family so I chose you. But you have to promise me to come to my office to claim your prize."
Then he gave us his office address and mobile number. We'll just have to watch their presentation for about 90 mins, with free food and drinks. It's going to be a big event, he says.
"No raffles, no draw. I will give you your prize after the presentation."

So his name is Amr. His number is 052 9246023. The office is at 21st Century Tower, Office 501. (seems legit right?!)

He made us fill up a small form (name, number .. etc) then congratulated us once again, shook our hands and made us promise to arrive on time. He really was a good talker!

As we were going home, I have this nagging feeling that I just couldn't shake off. I tweeted the experience and luckily I got some info! I started consulting my good friend, Mr. Google, and found out that this company is a sham. They pretend to be a tourism establishment and entice you with gifts/prizes.

Then once in their offices, they make you watch a presentation and compel you to join their time share scheme!

I still have no clue how it works or what time shares are but after reading this article from Gulfnews... I don't ever want to be near this guy or hear from him ever again.

Time-share scam targets gullible customers

I really can't believe I almost fell for this! Imagine people swiping their cards and giving away AED 16,000 to AED 22,000. I knew it was too good to be true ... I knew that there must be something more than what he's saying. I just can't believe that I ignored the signs!

Why do I say that this is a scam? Well, he said that he will give us free trip right? But reading the article, its clear that there are no free trips...no gifts. Nothing. Instead, you will have to pay and join the scheme. That, to me, is already a big FAT lie!

Be careful, folks! There are lots of scammers around!

The IHop Experience

I had an appointment with my chiropractor last Thursday. From the office, I went straight to the clinic. No Lunch, no snacks. The appointment was at 430. So imagine what's going on my tummy by the time I got out of the session.

After the wonderful back breaking and bone cracking, I went to Mall of Emirates to meet the "Bitter Half" and the Little One. And because I was starving, I decided to have breakfast for dinner!

I'm eating pancakes for Dinner! Boo yah!

The Verdict:

I find it expensive for "breakfast menu". A pancake is a pancake! It was a good pancake but I can do that at home, right!? As for the steak tips, it lacks flavor. The corn was dehydrated and mashed potato is.. well, mashed. There's nothing fancy about it.

Will I go back? Yeah, sure. If you're paying! :)

Lasting Finish Matte by Kate Moss - 105

I have been using this for 3 months and I'm happy. I actually want to buy more from this collection.

Matte is more my type. I don't go for shiny, sticky lippies. I do not have lip gloss.

I also love neutral shades. I'm boring like that. Kate Moss Lasting Finish Matte in 105 is a mid-tone neutral bronze.

I love that it just gives enough tint but not thick to give that heavy feeling. I guess the only thing I don't like about is the after taste. It smells nice but I can taste it. Also, it is advertised as matte but it really doesn't dry matte.

Overall, it is a good product and I will buy more when I have the time. HAH!

I would have to hide it from the Bitter Half, he has been asking me why I buy lip products when I still have tons to use. Men!

Pampering Time at Simply Beauty

I always go to Simply Beauty salon in Sharjah. I liked the ambiance and the service. (Although there are times that I find the girls too talky. I like my spa time to be relaxing. After all, this is my "me" time. I want to be pampered.

I realized it has been a year since my last visit. Things have changed. I don't recognize most of the girls there anymore.

Anyhoooo, I got the foot spa with pedicure package and a manicure. I really really needed one badly! You have no idea how bad!

Sally Hansen's Racey Rouge on my hands. I always bring my own nail polish coz I didn't like their selection. But since it has been a year, I found out that they got rid of their local nail polish brands and replaced them with Orly and OPI (for some reason, you have to pay extra if you want OPI... hmmm, fishy)

After the leg massage, she proceeded to do my nails. I currently have OPI - You Don't Know Jacques on my toes.

Also, I had my brows threaded. They are now neat and trimmed. I just love spa time!

iFly Dubai

This post is related to my Bucket List - Sky Dive

My original list was more daring ... more adventurous. Then I got pregnant, I had to tweak it to "pregnant-lady-friendly" things. Then I had to tweak it some more to suit my current lifestyle. Then one day, I realized... Why am I limiting myself? The heck, let's do this!

Sky Diving is part of my original list which I had to remove. Somehow knowing that a little human being is going to depend on me, for at least half of her life, changed my mind. But if you look at my list now, sky diving is there. I put it just now (sshhh!). Well, I did sky dive two weekends ago. It's the same thing, only indoors.

I'm talking about iFly Dubai in Mirdif City Center. I have seen people do it. I wanted to try but none of my friends seems to be interested. Then my cousin Genny, whom I have not seen in 25 years, flew out here from Germany to visit.

We looked at each other and something like this followed:

Me: Do you want to do it?
G: uhmm, ok. Do you want to do it?
Me: ahhh.. sure. So, are we doing it?
G: If you want to do it, its ok. Do you?

And this conversation dragged on for some time. Haha!! Of course we decided to do it.

Before everything else, you have to sign a waiver. Something that says you have no previous or current injuries/illnesses and that by agreeing to the terms, you are not allowed to sue iFly if something happens to you.

We gave up all our rights, signed the waiver, paid the fee and waited for the instructor. There's a short introduction to iFly followed by a video instruction on how to read the hand signals. Then the instructor repeats the instructions and signs and just asked if we have any more "cautions" (we're guessing he meant "questions").

Then off we go to change. We were provided shoes, socks, overalls, goggles, helmet and earplugs. We went inside the waiting area where we were called one by one to enter the "tube".

Here I am (above) just hovering. It's not as easy as it looks! I started out really low (below)

I swear, if you decide to do this, please keep your mouth closed! Not just for having nice photos... but I'll tell you in a bit... meanwhile, I was able to float higher, see?

I had no idea my face looked like this!

But it was fun

After 2 minutes of floating and trying to not bang my head on the walls, I was pushed out of the tube. That's when I realized that my face was full of my saliva! YUCK!! And that is why you don't open your mouth!!

After the session was done, we were asked to return the outfit. Some people are just crazy to return the earplugs. haha!!

It was quite an experience. We were sore for about two days, like we had major gym-time but its definitely something to remember. And will I do it again? Sure.... do you want to do it? Coz I would do it if you want to... are you sure? ; )

New Direction

THREE YEARS AGO

This blog was initially all about nail polish. About three years ago, I rekindled my love affair with nail polish. With little prodding from my friends, I started collecting polishes. I began posting swatches of nail polish, joining giveaways and having giveaways of my own. I stalked other nail polish blogs and drooled over their collections. But that was three years ago.

DEATH OF AN ADDICTION

In 2011, I found out I was pregnant. And as a first time mom, I was all about pregnancy sites, mommy blogs and parenting. My nail polish addiction suddenly stopped. I didn't have any dizzy spells or any allergic reaction to the fumes but I decided to just concentrate on the little person growing inside me. Once in a while I would have this itch to paint my nails because I ~~look~~ feel so ugly. But I guess the main reason why I stopped is because I was so darn lazy.

What happened to this blog, you ask. Nothing. Nothing happened and I felt guilty. So I continued to write about stuff.

THE DETOUR

At this point, I was writing about anything. Movies, Make up, Recent Purchases, Reviews, etc ... I feel guilty calling myself a "nail polish blogger". I feel like a poser. I need to be comfortable again. To be able to write without stressing myself out because I'm so behind in the nail polish scene.

What started out as a nail polish blog is now a mash up of everything I love. I will be posting anything that comes to mind. (nail polish still included =P) I will still do product reviews, PR and sponsored posts.

I guess you already knew this was coming. I hope you guys will continue to be a part of my ever changing "blogging" journey.
