A Dream Within a Dream

2012-04-10T20:11:00.000-07:00

I am now selling paintings! The paintings are on paper (22"*35") and are affordably priced. I will post pictures of them as soon as I finish each piece. I hope you like this series. I changed the style on this particular piece; it is a pencil sketch that has been washed by acrylic paints. It was inspired by line from one of my favorite poems, 'A Dream Within A Dream."

All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream. -Edgar Allen Poe

Magic Balloon!!

2012-04-09T20:18:00.000-07:00

Life has been a tad bit hectic, but who's complaining? Life really could not have gotten any better. The book that I illustrated a while back is finally out, and for some reason it feels like things are only going to get better. I am going to keep this post nice and short... So here it is, as promised, pictures of my latest book.

Love, Sunshine, Oranges and Doodles!!!

2012-03-18T08:20:00.001-07:00

I know, I have not posted in a very long time and I apologise for not doing so. Life has been awfully busy. I have been working on way too many things at the same time. I am happy to say that I am enjoying every moment of my life. I realized that the last few blog posts I put up were very distant and not very personal. I suppose I needed to back away for a bit before expressing myself. There were ups and downs but I think I have finally found stability within all the chaos. I am lucky to have my family support me through everything and I am fortunate to have friends who inspire me and make me stronger.
The world is small and sometimes you are scared of how people perceive you. I lived in absolute fear of what people thought of me. It is difficult to go through every single day worrying about what people say about you or what they think of your situation. Sometimes it bogs you down so much that you can hardly function. It is funny how it is so easy to make a judgement and how simple it is to believe that the judgement is the truth. I went through days when I did not want to wake up, everything felt quite meaningless. There was no real reason to be happy but the only thing that kept me going was my love for baking, blogging and more than anything there was the hope that you would be reading my blog. Thank you for being with me every step of the way. My blog posts were usually oozing with happiness even on the darkest of days. I think it was because I was honestly scared to tell anyone that I was unhappy. Isn't it ironic, when I was sad, I used to push myself to prove that I was happy and now when I am actually happy, I am scared of what people will think of my new found love for life. I suppose it is hard to really enjoy life if you constantly worry about what people think of you. The thing is that, to each person their problems are the heaviest. No matter how small or big the issue is, when it is your issue, it just feels like it weighs heavier upon your shoulders and no one will ever really understand. When you feel like your world is falling apart the best thing you can ever do for yourself is stay strong, stay calm, love yourself and live like there is no tomorrow. After spending every single day worrying, I came to realize that I honestly needed to love myself first. There will be a million, gazillion things that people say, that may hurt you and make you doubt yourself. The only thing one can really do is to be true to oneself. Trust! At the end of the day, half of the people who make you feel bad about yourself don't really matter. Surround yourself with family and friends who really love you for who you are, people who believe in you. People who make you want to wake up every morning and make them proud. I am lucky to have my loved ones help me through this journey. If you feel like you don't have anyone to listen to you or if you feel low, you know you have me, give me a call, if you need to talk or if you just need a cake to make your day better. Life is too short to stay unhappy. Do whatever it takes to keep your mind from worrying. I worry all the time and I do my best to keep myself occupied so that my brain doesn't wander. That is why I bake, draw, work and head out with my family and friends. Trust me, there is no problem too big, even when the world crumbles down to your feet, there will be at least one surviving slice of cake somewhere to keep you happy as a bunny. Wait are bunnies really that happy?

Doodle!!

I thought I'd do a recipe entry since I haven't done that in AGES!
I made orange sunshine cake today with a strawberry honey glaze. Yummy! It is a soft dense cake with this bright, fresh taste of oranges. My Acha fell in love with it and I hope you do too. It's one of those cakes that come out perfect every time! If you try it let me know if it came out well... :)

Ingredients:
For the cake:
Rind of one orange
Juice of one orange
160gms Butter
160gms Flour
160gms Sugar
2 eggs
2tsps Vanilla essence
2 tbs honey
For the glaze:
4tbs honey
10 small strawberries halved
(1-2tsps lemon juice optional)

Directions:

Melt the butter

Add the powdered sugar

Cream the sugar and the butter

Add the eggs and Vanilla essence

Add the flour and mix well

Add the honey

Then combine the orange rind

Add the orange juice. Mix the batter well and spoon the thick batter into a small loaf tin and bake at 160 degrees Celsius. It took about 45 mins to bake but always do the fork test to see if the cake is done before pulling the cake out of the oven.

For the strawberry glaze, I mixed the strawberries with the honey and orange juice, in a pan over a low flame. Once the the mixture begins to bubble and thicken take it off the flame and let the mixture cool. Don't let it thicken too much as it might become more like toffee than a glaze.

Done!!!

Dazzle, Gingerbread, Chocolate and Strawberries

2011-12-16T02:48:00.000-08:00

Here is the latest cake from Hungry. Its a strawberry and cream layered chocolate cake, covered in white fondant, with gingerbread cookies, white self design, with the glam of champaign and dark violet crystals. Oh and lets not forget the chocolate coated strawberries at the bottom! I am totally in love with this new one. More over, the smell of cinnamon and spice from the cookies just makes this cake super festive. A cake full of love! Hope you like it :)

2011-11-28T21:02:00.001-08:00

Hey! So yesterday I made this set of cupcakes that had a Transformers' theme. The girl who the cupcakes were for is a huge transformers fan and this is what we came up with. The cupcakes were vanilla butter sponge with a vanilla cream center and a lemon cream cheese frosting, (as suggested by the client). The little Chibi style bumble bee was made out of sugar paste. Hope you like it :)

Love for all things pretty

2011-11-14T07:41:00.001-08:00

Sorry! Its been ages since I posted. I have been busy with "Hungry?" and in all the rush I have been awful about taking pictures of all our creations. Sadly we missed taking pictures of some really amazing ones. Sigh! But I finally managed to remember to bolt upstairs for my camera to take pictures of these yummy treats. So, this is Hungry?'s super chunky chocolate chip cookies. We use chocolate chunks rather than those small chocolate chips that are hardly satisfying. Oh so yummy! The next set of pictures is from our line of fudge centered cakes. The cake is decorated with cream frosting and sugar roses. So when are you ordering your yummy treat? Oh.My.God! Time for cupcakes!!

2011-10-24T10:46:00.000-07:00

I had such an amazing day today! I got the new boxes for our cupcakes and cookies! I baked a batch of cupcake sampler boxes today. It had all our new flavors, including chocolate ganche, mocha with a cream center, coconut and honey, strawberry, mexican chocolate, and apple cinnamon with cinnamon cream cheese (to order you cupcakes call on us at +91-9945794281 or visit our Facebook Page).
This evening I got to walk around brigade road. I haven't done that in a while and I had the most amazing people by my side and that's what made the walk super special. It could not have got any better, really. I was like a happy little kid, walking around, hugging and holding onto my boxes of cupcakes real tight. It was that perfect Bangalore weather. I ate momo's and hopped around puddles. I love that feeling when you walk down brigade road and walk past hundreds of people. You walk past so many strangers, so many faces; but in a strange way I always found that comforting. It's like walking by other stories, walking by other lives, and getting a glimpse of it, from that moment of eye contact, from that bit of conversation you hear as they pass by.
This time around my walk on Brigade road was slightly different for me though, I was not lost in thoughts of 'what if?' I was living the life I was born to live. I am alive and loving each moment of it. I am living my dream and nothing as looked this beautiful. So, this time as I walked by other's lives, I did not pause and wish I could walk in someone else's shoes. I will never swap this for anything. Yummy!

Starry Mocha Cake

2011-10-21T07:48:00.000-07:00

Mocha Cake: (This cake is for my dear Grandmother, I miss her a lot. I wish she was here to taste this cake. I know she would have loved it; she loved coffee)....So this is a rich, moist chocolate cake with a coffee cream center, frosted with a mocha cream and topped with a generous amount of chocolate curls. To add some dazzle there are little stars sprinkled on top. Fun! Hope you like it :)

Lots of love and Happiness...

Hungry?'s new packaging and the new cake! :)

2011-10-19T09:31:00.000-07:00

Chocolate Chocolate Cake (Sabu Cake): Moist dark chocolate cake with a thick layer of fudge and chocolate ganache on the top :). This cake is named after my best friend Sabina, for all those nights I got her on a sugar rush after eating chocolate cake; For all our 'scrub away' parties and for all the love we share. She is one of the most amazing people to walk this earth and I would be so lost without her because no one can really tolerate a girl singing 'like a rolling stone,' out loud, while trying to cross a busy road. Love you Macheee Kuttiee :)

Butter Cookies

2011-10-17T05:29:00.000-07:00

So, these are the super yummy, melt in mouth butter cookies I baked up for this Diwali's treats. These cookies are super light, crisp and flaky. They are perfect for Diwali, they look like little sugar duster marigolds. These bags contain about 20 cookies each and will go into a pretty box custom made for "Hungry?". I am still waiting for my boxes to get ready but I will be putting pictures of them up as soon as they are delivered. Exciting!! :)

Also, Hungry? has old school clown and animal cake toppers! Just like Amma used to make them :) How fun! :D

So, this is my Diwali gift for our little company. Every penny counts and I think this is a super yummy investment. Its one of those plastic baggie sealers. I kinda went a little crazy with it this morning, sealing everything I possibly can. It's the most exciting thing ever! haha That says a lot about myself. Sigh!

Mana Cupcakes!

2011-10-12T01:59:00.000-07:00

So hey New flavor of cupcakes are out! My friend Mana once told me about Lindt Chili Chocolates and I have been addicted ever since! She suggested that I try making chili chocolate cupcakes one day and they became a massive hit. This is my chili chocolate with a twist and I am naming it after my lovely friend Mana.. (her name also happens to mean 'food from heaven.' Perfect!) Mana is not a very "frosting" person but she tried the cupcake and said that she loved it nonetheless... I hope you like it too.

Butterflies and Stars

2011-10-04T11:35:00.000-07:00

Made white chocolate butterflies today and then I hand painted each one. I am tired and I really need to sleep. Thanks for keeping the 'Likes' coming on the Hungry? page on Facebook. I am loving the love.

Love Daisy Cakes

2011-10-02T12:09:00.000-07:00

I have no idea why I call them that. They are basically vanilla sponge with homemade strawberry preserve, custard and fruits. They are super light and fresh, perfect for your next tea party. Or any party for that matter. I am up baking at 12am, something is seriously wrong with me.... Sigh! OOoooh so 57 likes on the "Hungry?" page on Facebook! Thanks for your love and support! Could do this without you! Hope the 'likes' keep coming :)

So this was the inspiration for the cakes... Its a song called

Big Jet Plane by Angus and Julia Stone.

She said "hello mister, please to meet ya"
I wanna hold her, I wanna kiss her
She smelled of daisies, smelled of daisies
She drive me crazy, drive me crazy

Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Hey hey
Hey hey

Happy packages!!

Amma is back! I missed her so much. When people come back after a trip, I usually get really excited because that means that I get to watch them unpack and wait for gifts! I love getting gifts! Who doesn't? I love waiting on the side of a large suitcase as all the lovely things come out; perfumes, chocolates and creams. So yummy! So my brother and sister sent me this amazing cake stand! I can't wait to use it to display my cupcakes! How fun! They also sent this amazing pack of chocolate and pepper cookies from The Lime Tree Cafe. Yes, Chocolate and pepper. It's absolutely amazing and the packaging is so pretty and simple. Amma got me some fun creams, lotions and this amazing hibiscus soap that smells so yummy! She also gave me heaps of Patchi chocolates that simply melt in the mouth. Yay! So happy!

Butterflies :)

2011-10-01T00:37:00.000-07:00

So I have an order for the cutest little thing. My friend Hari's niece is turning one next weekend and his sister wanted something different. So I was thinking of three tier cake with cupcakes all around. Here is the sample of the butterfly cupcakes. The cupcakes are not the same flavor as the ones I'll be using for the birthday, instead I tried creating my new flavor of cupcakes. It was inspired by my friend Shilo. Once when we were in Rajasthan, Shilo jumped excitedly out of our auto to buy a glass of rose milk. I loved the rose milk so much that I finished drinking the entire glass all by myself. Shilo always makes me look at the world through pretty rose tinted glasses hehe :) These cakes are super light and have a hint of rose and cream. I hope you like it! :) OOOOOOOoooh and I got my visiting cards from the printers. They messed it up. But well it happens, right? I am still excited about them.

Another thing that made me super happy... I got this lovely box of homemade liquor chocolates yesterday! They were made by my friend, Priyanka Daga's childhood friend's mother...They are absolutely delicious! Thanks Saket!

Hungry? For cakes and all things pretty?

2011-09-30T04:26:00.000-07:00

When I was a kid, I loved opening presents. Okay, so I still love opening gifts. Who doesn't? I often find that cakes are packed in horribly drab boxes. Well, I think cakes and bakes deserve the same excitement, when you open them up. Pretty little packages makes me super happy. So here is my cake box. What do you think?

Happy Birthday Amma!!

2011-09-25T09:13:00.000-07:00

It's my mother's birthday. She is away spending her first birthday with her granddaughter. My mother is the most beautiful person on earth and I am absolutely in love with her. Coincidentally she was the first person who taught me to bake.
Once, in Lagos, my second grade teacher was organizing a Christmas party. She was allotting who had to get what for the party. The smarter children in my class put their hands up for potato chips and cucumber sandwiches (their mothers would have been so proud about their children picking up reasonable, hassle free party foods). But Sandhya Sethumadhavan loved her mother's cakes. Those days there weren't many nice bakeries in Lagos and Amma usually made our birthday cakes. I loved looking at the pictures Amma had taken of all the cakes she had baked. She made my brother a Batman cake for one of his birthdays. You really can't get cooler than that. So yes, when my teacher asked who would get cake, I immediately bounced up and down. During lunch time, the kids in my class ran up to me, they wanted to know if the stories they heard were true, did my mother actually once make a Batman cake for my brother? I nodded and grinned. They were so excited. I felt like I was the daughter of a celebrity. They all asked what kind of cake I'd get for the party. I thought a bit and said that it would be a snowman cake. When I got back home, I threw my bag down ran to my Amma and after a long hug I began to explain what happened in school. Amma was not too pleased with my choice of party food. She could not understand why I could not have put my hand up for something a little more realistic. But my Amma being my Amma, had to make her silly daughter happy and so she got busy in the kitchen. After the cakes were baked she popped them over with ease, made the frosting, and propped me up on the kitchen counter. I watched her as she iced my snowman cake. I remember thinking about the surprise on everyone's face when they see the cake the next day! How happy I was! We took a picture of the cake. Sadly I can't seem to find it now. But it was the prettiest snowman cake in the whole world.
I love my mother. She made everything so much easier to handle. She never let me down, even when I went to her with my silly whims and fancies (and ideas of a snowman cake). I know all of us, my Acha, Etta, Chechi, Nonu and I are super proud to have her in our lives. We love you Amma!
Baked a cake for her today. Acha and I even sang out loud as we cut the cake. It's a mile high eggless moist chocolate cake with homemade strawberry preserve and whipped cream.

Let me know when you want yours! Open for orders :)

Cream and Cake

2011-09-23T08:09:00.000-07:00

Some people love cakes with frosting and some don't. I personally think frosting makes cakes pretty. When you can have icing then why do without? How lovely it is to smooth snow white cream over dark moist chocolate. The contrast is startlingly delicious. How I love thick decadent chocolate ribbons scattered over the top of a cake. For all those things pretty and delicious. For those who love frosting.
I was really stressed out and tired today. But then again there are prettier things to focus on. Life is gorgeous and I am happy.
I was missing my niece, my mother, my brother and my sister a lot today. I remembered the day my family and I drove around with our little angel fast asleep in her mother's arms. As my brother drove, the song "While you were sleeping," by Elvis Perkins played in the background. We all knew the song was meant for Nonu. We all were happy. Life could not get any better.

While you were sleeping

the babies grew

the stars shined and the shadows moved

time flew, the phone rang

there was a silence when the kitchen sang

its songs competed like kids for space

we stared for hours in our maker's face

they gave us picks

said go mine the sun

and gold and come back when you're done

while you were sleeping

you tossed, you turned

you rolled your eyes as the world burned

the heavens fell, the earth quaked

i thought you must be, but you weren't awake

no, you were sleeping

you ignored the sun

you grew your power garden

for your little ones

and you found brides for them on christmas eve

they hung young cain from the adam trees

and danced

while you were sleeping

I tossed and I turned

till I closed my eyes

but the future burned

through the planet turned a hair gray

as i relived the day

while you were sleeping

the money died

machines were harmless and the earth sighed

through the wind you slept sound

and gravity caught my love around

the ocean rose, sang about decay

while witches flew

and the mermaids stayed

full of dreams, you overslept

and keeping with quiet, through the walls i crept

i walked on tiptoe, sent darkness swirling over all the kitchen in the early morning

i'll never catch up to you

who sleeps so sound

my arms are useless

my heart beats too loud to go to sleep

my mind's too crowded

while you were sleeping

the time changed

all your things were rearranged

your vampire mirrors face to face

they saw forever out into space

and found you dreaming in black and white

while it rained in all the colors of the night

I watched the tv

memories

championships

vanished to sea

could it be, my honey between you and me

so I waited for the riddled sky

to dissolve again by sunrise

and i've made a death suit for life

for my father's ill widowed wife

did you have that strangest dream before you woke

cos in your gown you had the butterfly stroke

did it escape you like some half told joke?

when you reached for your plume of smoke
